Teachers still make the difference “AS we move further into the second decade of the 21st century, we continue to see incredible changes in the educational sector,” says Sheldon College founder, principal and chief executive Lyn Bishop OAM. “We all know our students live in a world of fast-paced technological development. The most important technology in the classroom was, is and will be the classroom teacher. “Not just any classroom teacher but teachers who have a love of learning; who love children; who have an appreciation of aesthetics, the ethical, moral dimensions; who understand children’s different learning styles and how different children learn. “Good teachers know that they are constantly dealing with the emotional, social, cognitive, physical and metacognitive dimensions of learning – aspects of a child’s growth and development that no technological device can accommodate.” Dr Bishop said that more important than anything else, the teacher’s role remained one of focusing first and foremost on relationships and

keeping each child’s candle burning in this world of increasing personal disengagement. “Twenty-first century teaching and learning is not about technology, but simply how to apply it in a digital

world,” she said. “For that reason, technology will always come second when compared with those wonderful, inspiring, committed, dedicated, passionate teachers who daily embrace the philosophy of love,

laughter and learning in their classrooms. And don’t our 21st century learners crave it?” Tel: 3206 5555 sheldoncollege.com

Two unique colleges. One school of thought. Moreton Bay College and Moreton Bay Boys’ College run separate, single-sex, school campuses as we believe that boys and girls learn differently. However, we share the same philosophy on delivering a quality education by recognising each student’s individual learning needs. To learn more contact our Registrar on 07 3249 9322. You’ll see how two colleges work together to give our students the best of both worlds. mbc.qld.edu.au | mbbc.qld.edu.au

Great teachers show a child where to look. Not what to see.

A Catholic education ensures your child is engaged, challenged and provided with clear expectations. We know your child is unique and with individual attention, we uncover their hidden talents. All our teachers seek opportunities for every student’s progress and Brisbane Catholic Education sets ambitious targets for improving classroom performance.

TAMING TEENS CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST URGES PARENTS NOT TO OVER-INDULGE UNGRATEFUL ‘BOOFHEAD’ BOYS SOME parents are raising a generation of lazy, disrespectful, self-absorbed boys who will grow up to be unemployable and possibly violent, according to a leading Australian child psychologist. Dr Michael Carr-Gregg has dubbed the ungrateful lot “boof heads”, whose parents have never challenged them or made them suffer the consequences of bad behaviour. These boys expected the world on a platter but gave nothing in return except emotional and sometimes physical abuse to their overindulgent parents, he said. Dr Carr-Gregg’s latest book, The Prince Boofhead Syndrome, warned parents about raising boys “worshipping at the altar of ‘the self’ for too long”. “There is a sub-segment of self-

entitled boys and I’m worried they are growing in number,” he said. “Parents have to stop bubblewrapping these lords, stop trying to be their friend and stop being their 24/7 servant.” Dr Carr-Gregg said parents had to set boundaries, impose consequences for their son’s inappropriate actions and demand respect, otherwise they would raise arrogant teenagers unprepared for adulthood and work. “One boy used his father’s stolen credit card and when I asked what the consequences were, the father said ‘I told him not to do it again’ – a massive fail,” Dr Carr-Gregg said. He said that teenage boys were often physically mature, but mentally and emotionally

immature, and could be violent, hurting people or damaging property. “They can stand over their mothers, sometimes hit them — 70 per cent of mothers have felt physically threatened by their sons, and that’s not acceptable.” A boy’s bad treatment of his mother showed a lack of respect for women and was a precursor to violence against women, he said. Co-authored with researcher Elly Robinson, the book is a follow-up to The Princess Bitchface Syndrome, and covers tough topics like depression, drugs, sex, technology, alcohol, body image and online gambling. FROM POT-PLANT TO PASTA

Somerville House Prep students recently got hands-on with a ‘paddock-to-plate’ adventure on campus. With a focus on learning about how things grow, the students had been tending to the basil plant outside the classroom for many weeks, and the time had come to harvest the fruits of the labour. “After being harvested, the students delivered this fresh produce to the school tuckshop, where it was inspected, tasted, smelt and gratefully received by our staff members,” Head of Somerville House Junior School Ms Arna Bennett says. Under the students’ watch, the basil was then added to a pot of tomato sauce and cooked, before being dished up with pasta; no transportation, no refrigeration and no packaging required. Ms Bennett adds: “it was a tasty addition to the tuck shop, and a wonderful learning experience for the Prep students to be involved in a ‘paddock-to-plate’ journey.”

Pastoral Care and Wellbeing

As a Catholic school, the study of religion provides a vision of reality that is enriched by the interaction of both a religious and an educational perspective. At All Hallows’ School, we believe this contributes to the total development of the human person who understands and values authentic relationships, wisdom and spirituality. Our students are socially aware, taking action both within and beyond our community.

The life of an All Hallows’ girl is multi-dimensional and students join a community in which wellbeing, positive relationships and resilience are nurtured. With a diverse and vibrant student community, our School is committed to ensuring each girl feels individually known and supported, as they develop a sense of connectedness. An All Hallows’ girl is encouraged to be a self-leader and a supporter of every All Hallows’ girl.
