Two unique colleges. one school of thought. Moreton Bay College and Moreton Bay Boys’ College run separate, single-sex, school campuses as we believe that boys and girls learn differently. However, we share the same philosophy on delivering a quality education by recognising each student’s individual learning needs. To learn more contact our Registrar on 07 3249 9322. You’ll see how two colleges work together to give our students the best of both worlds. mbc.qld.edu.au | mbbc.qld.edu.au

NEW NAPLAN THE NATIONAL TESTING PROGRAM WILL NOW MOVE TO AN ONLINE ASSESSMENT PROCESS Four times in every Australian child’s school-life, they have to sit four tests of about an hour each over three days testing their literacy and numeracy skills. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) started in 2008 for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It provides a “snapshot” of student abilities in literacy and numeracy across the nation, according to Dr Stanley Rabinowitz, of the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) which runs the program. “NAPLAN tests what students should already know from their everyday learning [and] there is no need for excessive preparation,” he said. “Overall, NAPLAN is about driving improvement in our schools. The valuable data gained is used for forward-planning, allocating support and resources, and tracking progress and achievements of individual students, as well as entire groups of students, over the course of their educational journey.” Over the next three years, NAPLAN tests will
move to an online assessment process, which has been criticised by some as disadvantaging rural and remote schools. But Dr Rabinowitz said online testing would provide more precise results and a quicker turnaround of information. Education expert, Professor Patrick Griffin, of Melbourne University, said NAPLAN could have a significant impact on learning if principals
acted on their school’s scores. He said the results, posted on the Federal Government’s My School website, tracked student performance at different schools. In one case Prof Griffin studied, two neighbouring primary schools with the same socio-economic profile had similar early results, until one principal acted. “Results for one drifted along with no change
for years, the other drifted along and suddenly its score lifted significantly,” he said. Prof Griffin rang the school with the marked improvement and found the principal had seen weaknesses in the school’s NAPLAN scores and adopted a “whole school policy” to improve reading and maths. He said there were similar results in several primary and secondary schools where principals acted on the scores.

2018 Marco Polo Changzhou Student Exchange
Our school mission statement reads “We Care, We Are Responsible, We Achieve”, and is at the core of our proud record of achievement within the Beenleigh community. Our school boasts excellent facilities and resources and has a very supportive and active Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unit called Mibunn Jinndi and also a strong culture group who both participate in performances throughout the year. Music and sport are also key components of our extra-curricular program. In the agriculture field, the school produces beef, pork and lamb at an incredible level. Combine this with our Hospitality and Catering team and you have the famous Beenleigh High P and C Paddock to Plate Luncheon run on the last Friday of August each year. The P2P with our Celebrity Chef Matt Golinski showcases the school to the broader Beenleigh community. Many corporate sponsors support this event which includes music and dance group performances. In 2018 we again sent students to the Marco Polo International Hotels to do work experience. 1976 School Captain and President of The WHARF Group Hotels who own Marco Polo – Dr. Jennifer Cronin took the time this year to visit our students in Changzhou. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! Later this year the school will have a new block built to cater for our increased enrolments. As a result the school now is enrolment managed. Beenleigh High is also a member of the ENABLE coalition. Enrolment inquiries are encouraged and open now.

SCREEN TIME SHOCK RECORD NUMBERS OF CHILDREN ARE DEVELOPING CHILDHOOD MYOPIA There is a new push to replace screen time with green time as a record number of Australian children develop short-sightedness. Experts are reporting a boom in eye problems in children, particularly those who spend too long on screens and not enough time outdoors, which is crucial for good eye health. New data indicates one in five children suffers from an undetected vision problem. According to research by SpecSavers, the time children spend on electronic devices has increased by five hours year-on-year,

with the average child now spending the equivalent of a full time job (up to 35 hours) a week staring at screens. Specsavers optometrist Naomi Barber warned too much indoor screen time could cause serious, long-term damage to young eyes. “Staring at screens and being indoors for extended periods of time can increase the risk of becoming shortsighted,” she said. Optometry Australia’s Luke Arundel said childhood myopia (shortsightedness) was “growing at astonishing rates” yet only about eight per cent of children aged 0-14 had been tested. “The impact of not being able to see properly cannot be underestimated, particularly among school-aged

children, who may fall behind and start to lose confidence,” Mr Arundel said. Child psychologist Dr Michael CarrGregg said undiagnosed eye conditions could have a psychological impact on children. “Poor eyesight can cause learning and behavioural problems, especially for young children, who may find it harder to explain the difficulties they are having with their eyesight.” Dr Carr-Gregg suggests physical contact is better than virtual. “Increasing the interaction between kids physically, a hug, holding hands, reading together and playing sports together, not only helps children learn social awareness but develops their motor senses and general health too,” he said.

KINDER KIDS
HOW TO CHOOSE A KINDERGARTEN OR CHILDCARE FACILITY ■ What is the ratio of staff to children? ■ What skills, experience and qualifications do staff have? ■ Has your service been quality rated and what was the rating? ■ How will my child’s learning and development be encouraged? ■ What hours do you operate and when can I drop off and pick up my child? ■ Will I be charged fees for public holidays or when my child is not there?
CHILDCARE CENTRE PROGRAMS VS TRADITIONAL KINDERGARTENS – WHAT WORKS BEST? Parents should judge kindergartens on their individual merits rather than whether they were stand-alone facilities or in childcare centres, according to a Melbourne academic. Dr Linda Henderson, a senior Monash University lecturer in early years education, said parents should also not rely on a national rating system but instead visit kindergartens to see what “they feel like”. She said it was not a question of comparing council-run or stand-alone facilities to kindergartens in childcare centres, but which individual provider suited families, including the convenience of having a longer care facility. All kindergartens had to have qualified teachers but programs could vary widely in their “play rich” learning programs, Dr Henderson said. “Look at the educator; do they work to templates copied out of a book or do they base programs around the interests of the children,” she said.

Shane Lucas, the chief executive of the Early Learning Association Australia, said kindergartens came in many forms including not-for-profit models run by councils, community organisations, parent committees and others in stand-alone facilities and childcare centres, as well as through private operators. Mr Lucas said parents could use the
Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority’s website which rated kindergartens from moving toward national standards, meeting standards, exceeding standards and excelling standards. Goodstart, Australia’s largest early learning provider with 643 childcare centres nationwide, employed experienced, bachelor qualified early childhood teachers, according to
state manager Nicole Jones. She said kindergarten programs were off ered as part of the not-for-profit organisation’s childcare centres to meet the needs of parents needing children cared for beyond kindergarten hours. John Paul College Kindergarten
Kindergarten is a special place where all children have the opportunity to become confident, inquisitive and enthusiastic learners in preparation for their learning journey. In our Kindy community, children grow in confidence and their capabilities are acknowledged, respected and celebrated. With new state-of-the-art classrooms and beautiful playscapes, children are at the centre of our philosophy. We work to ensure that their voice, their culture, their identity and their experiences are represented and reflected in their Early Education. Our Kindergarten and Early Learning Centre have been rated as ‘Exceeding the National Quality Standard’ by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). Kindergarten intakes are available in September 2018 and January 2019.

Skills for life
The art of writing is an important life skill that Somerville House Prep students learn through creative and playful methods, according to Ms Amy Woodgate, Assistant Head of Junior School. “Writing is an important part of becoming literate and an essential school and life skill,” she says. Prep students learn to write in a variety of ways, with a variety of tools and about a variety of subjects. “We use a range of genres, including narrative, descriptive and information text, to encourage students to gain confidence and become enthusiastic and independent writers.” Prep students learn to write stories, poems, labels, captions and even lists. “They are also encouraged to use different tools, including pens, pencils, chalk, crayons and felt pens,” Ms Woodgate says.
