Lynn Says

Doesn’t this describe the universal progression of class reunions? (By Lynn L. Martin, sent to by someone he doesn’t recall) Every five years, as summertime nears, An announcement arrives in the mail. A class reunion is planned; it’ll be really grand; Make plans to attend without fail. I’ll never forget the first time we met; We tried so hard to impress. We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars, And wore our most elegant dress. It was quite an affair; the whole class was there. It was held at a fancy hotel. We wined, and we dined, and we acted refined, And everyone thought it was swell. The men all conversed about who had been first To achieve great fortune and fame. Meanwhile, their spouses described their fine houses And how beautiful their children became. The homecoming queen, who once had been lean, Now weighed in at one-ninety-six. The jocks who were there had all lost their hair, And the cheerleaders could no longer do kicks. No one had heard about the class nerd Who’d guided a spacecraft to the moon; Or poor little Jane, who’s always been plain; She married a shipping tycoon. The boy we’d decreed “most apt to succeed” Was serving ten years in the pen, While the one voted “least” now was a priest; Just shows you can be wrong now and then. They awarded a prize to one of the guys Who seemed to have aged the least. Another was given to the grad who had driven The farthest to attend the feast.

They took a class picture, a curious mixture Of beehives, crew cuts and wide ties. Tall, short or skinny, the style was the mini; You never saw so many thighs. At our next get-together, no one cared whether They impressed their classmates or not. The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal; By this time we’d all gone to pot. It was held out-of-doors, at the lake shores; We ate hamburgers, coleslaw and beans. Then most of us lay around in the shade, In our comfortable T-shirts and jeans. By the fiftieth year, it was abundantly clear, We were definitely over the hill. Those who weren’t dead had to crawl out of bed, And be home in time for their pill. And now I can’t wait; they’ve set the date; Our sixtieth is coming, I’m told. It should be a ball, they’ve rented a hall At the Shady Rest Home for the old. Repairs have been made on my hearing aid; My pacemaker’s been turned up on high. My wheelchair is oiled, and my teeth have been boiled; And I’ve bought a new wig and glass eye. I’m feeling quite hearty, and I’m ready to party I’m gonna dance ‘til dawn’s early light. It’ll be lots of fun; but I just hope that there’s one Other person who can make it that night.

By Yvonne Miller The Burlington Board of Education met for their September meeting at 8 p.m. Sept. 21. Board President Terry Graham called the meeting to order with all members present, including Allison Armbruster, Aaron Smith, T.J. Rockenbach and Roger Allen (who arrived late.) Others present were Superintendent Glen Elliott, Principal Shane Feely and Minutes Clerk Tamre Bohn. Misty McCullough, school counselor, presented the 2014/2015 ACT scores, the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test (OCCT) and end of instruction (EOI) test results and college remediation report. The board discussed the results and the way they may affect the upcoming school report card. McCullough said Burlington High School (BHS) students were “down slightly” on ACT scores from last year. She said the state takes the last score of their seniors and averages them. Last year, in 2014, she said there were only four seniors and they all did very well and averaged 22.5 on the ACT. Last year, 2015, had 10 senior students who averaged 20.1 on the ACT. She said the state avg was 20.7. On the OCCT McCullough said BHS students “did very well, above average.” She said they hardly ever have a retake on

the EOI test. Items approved by the board included selling season tickets to Elks basketball games including issuance of senior citizen passes and setting gate prices for the 2015/2016 season, the soccer co-op with Alva Public Schools, the request for a deregulation for Burlington’s Alternative Education Plan and Abbreviated School Day, the 2015/2016 Federal Assurances and 2015/2016 Federal Assurances and LEA Agreement, and the August activity report. The board approved the internal activities committee for 2015/2016 with committee members Shane Feely, Travis Bradshaw, Randy Turney, Kristen Pruett, Ken Jones and Kiley Feely. Also approved was the Safe School Committee and Healthy and Fit School Advisory Committee with Shane Feely as chair and members Misty Mccullough, Kelsey Yarbrough, Jennifer Newlin, Kirsten Pruett, Ginger Cass, Randy Turney, Lindsey Morgan and Allison Armbruster. The board reviewed the Burlington school accreditation status for 2015/2016. Board members approved the encumbrances, change orders and warrants for 2016: • General Fund encumbrances: $82,311.58, change orders: $297.78, warrants: $221,071.03

• Reserves warrants: $19,226.10 • Building Fund warrants: $268.58 • Child Nutrition Fund encumbrances: $202.96, warrants: $4,360.05. The board reviewed the schedule of school administrators’ salary and fringe benefits with no action needed. Superintendent Elliott was approved as designee to review results of national criminal history record search. The board reviewed the FR3 expenditure/revenue as of June 30, 2015. The board spent about 45 minutes in executive session for the purpose of discussing the acquisition of real estate with possible vote to be taken upon return to open session. Then board members authorized Elliott to continue pursuing acquisition of real property and updating current property. Board members discussed whether to change to an e-meeting format for the board meetings. They decided to have the superintendent and principal continue researching this new format including checking with other school boards that use it and to have a company representative come to a future meeting. After a short discussion on some minor changes to the real property contract the matter was tabled until the next meeting with no further action taken. The board authorized Elliott to pursue the purchase of appliances for the new house and also continue looking into the building of a garage at the new house. The board asked Elliott to look into seeing what updates need to be done to the house at 404 Main and take demolition bids for the property at 401 Poplar. Regarding the state of the school marquee, the board asked Elliott and Feely to continue looking into possible solutions with no further action taken at this time. In Elliott’s report to the board, he said the school’s total enrollment is 173 students – 41 at the high school and 132 at the grade school. Of those, 141 students qualify for bus routes. He gave a short

Dacoma has become a dead zone Submitted by Newton Baker, Dacoma resident The closing of Whittet’s Grocery and Cowboy Grill in 2004 resulted in Dacoma becoming a dead zone. You could fire a cannon down Main Street and hit nothing. Then about 2006 the city building at the Dacoma Park was opened as the Wolves Den followed later by Carol’s Corner in 2009. In 2012, the facility became the Dacoma Diner as we know it today. The Diner has catered to local and regional families as well as agricultural customers year around and seasonal. More recently, it has served oil and gas industry personnel to include management, drilling rig workers and oil field support services. The diner closed its doors on Saturday, Sept. 26. Small towns across Oklahoma need eateries like the Dacoma Diner to be a focal point in the community. A place

where people meet to converse, eat and in general keep the area alive. I’m sure this is true across the state. However, businesses like the diner can’t always meet every state regulation or code. That doesn’t mean they are unclean or deficient in any way. I would guess there are numerous instances in which this is the case – be it Dacoma, Alva or Bricktown. Extenuating circumstances should be considered when community cohesion is factored in. Deb Berry has agreed to continue her employment at the Dacoma Diner but we are in need of a manager to take over the paperwork involved, ie, payroll, taxes, ordering of supplies and other materials. All of this needs to be coordinated and worked out with the City of Dacoma, which owns the building. We along with every other small restaurant in Oklahoma need the cooperation of the Oklahoma State Department of Health to work with us on

meeting state regulations within reason. An example is the recent requirement for a suspended ceiling in a building that was originally constructed as a storage and maintenance facility. The Dacoma Diner has never been anything but neat, tidy and clean. The bottom line is that we need to keep the Dacoma Diner (and other such facilities) open to serve their respective communities and to request a modicum of leniency from local and state government entities that control the permitting process. Having said all this, the restaurant in Dacoma is badly in need of a manager to run the facility given that support staff will be available to assist with everyday operations. Please help support us in our quest to find a manager/operator for the diner in Dacoma. Interested parties should contact the City of Dacoma at 580-4847316.

Communities and schools are able to determine how the incentive funds will be used to promote health in their communities. Grant funds are frequently used to leverage other funds to projects that advance health. “We are pleased to partner to help create healthy opportunities for communities and schools. These efforts benefit Oklahomans in many ways including improved health and increased academic performance at schools,” said TSET Executive Director Tracey Strader. “We want to recognize communities and schools that are making the healthy choice the easy choice.” Timberlake Public School District will receive $3,000 for indoor recess equipment, automated external defibrillation, and health education curriculum as Healthy Districts Incentive Grant Award.

Two recently retired veterans honored at Peace Treaty Parade By Yvonne Miller Although the Saturday parade at the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty was full of cowboys and Indians, covered wagons and other colorful characters to commemorate the historic Peace Treaty of 1867 between the U.S. Government and five tribes of the Plains Indians, the common theme of American patriotism abounded. Two hometown boys who recently retired from their military service were recognized and honored at the parade. They are Jared Bowman and Rodney VanRanken. Both were 1993 graduates of Medicine Lodge High School and reportedly just retired from their military service Aug. 31. Bowman spent 10 years in the Marine Corps and then retired after 12 years in the U.S. Navy. VanRanken retired as a Marine sargent. Ron James, commander of the American Legion Riders from Post No. 69 in Medicine Lodge, made the presentation near the beginning of the parade after the flag-bearing motorcycles roared down the street. He gave Bowman and VanRanken a special flag to welcome them home. “This is just a small token of our appreciation,” James told the veterans. The flag was signed by local veterans and American Legion members. At the Saturday parade Main Street in Medicine Lodge overflowed with people. Parade spectators were stacked from the walls of store fronts to nearly out in the street. No one could yet provide accurate estimates of how many people took in the action-packed weekend of Peace Treaty festivities, but most are certain it was at least several thousand – just how many thousand is the question.

A float that received many cheers at the Peace Treaty parade at Medicine Lodge was this one holding local veterans: (facing the camera, left to right) Kenny Dohm, Bill Keller, Paul Marshall, Harold Kline and Steven Allen. Photo by Yvonne Miller

In the Peace Treaty Pageant reenactment of the signing of the Medicine Lodge Treaty in 1867 between the U.S. Government and the five tribes of the Plains Indians, early day explorers are portrayed. Dressed in colorful, ornate outfits is the entourage representing 16th century explorer Francisco Vazquez de Coronado. Leading the Coronado group is Brooke Boyce, daughter of Chad and Alisa Boyce, who portrays the child companion to Coronado's bride. The boys are Alexavier Nittler, son of Chad and Joscelyn Nittler, and Carter Cunningham, son of Landon and Andrea Cunningham. Both boys are portraying the escorts for the child companion. They are in the prelude to the Coronado scene in the pageant reenactment and are in the parade. Photo by Yvonne Miller
