FIVE-FOLD INCREASE IN PARENT’S BENEFIT Parent’s Benefit payments of €14 million were issued to families during April to July 2021, with the number of parents availing of the payment increasing almost fivefold compared to the same period in 2020, a local TD has said.

TD for Dublin Mid-West, Emer Higgins said, ‘Parent’s Leave and Benefit was extended to five weeks from two weeks last April

and it’s brilliant to see a huge increase in families availing of the payment since then, as I know it’s a significant financial support for young families across Dublin Mid-West.

“I’m delighted to see this news from Minister Heather Humphreys that in July of this year alone, €4.4 million was issued to parents in receipt of Parent’s Benefit. This is compared to payments

of €572,000 issued in July 2020. “Over 20,400 parents have been awarded Parent’s Benefit between April and July this year nationwide compared with just over 4,000 in the same period in 2020. This represents a five-fold increase in the numbers availing of Parent’s Benefit which is remarkable. “From speaking with local constituents in the community, I know

that these payments allow parents the freedom and flexibility to spend time with their young babies during the first few months and years that they might otherwise not be able to. “I also want to remind parents across Dublin Mid-West that the extension of Parent’s Benefit from two weeks to five weeks applies retrospectively and any parents of children born on or adopted since 1 November 2019 are entitled to an additional three weeks, even if they’ve already claimed the original two weeks leave,” concluded Deputy Higgins.

COUNCILLOR WELCOMES CONFIRMATION FOR QUARRYVALE PARK ENHANCEMENT WORKS Councillor for PalmerstownFonthill-North Clondalkin, Derren Ó Brádaigh, has warmly welcomed the recent confirmation that he received for park enhancements work for Quarryvale Park in Clondalkin. Cllr Ó Brádaigh said; “I am delighted that finally

some improvement works will be scheduled in the improvements works for 2022, that will help address the total absence of any basic amenities in Quarryvale Park. This was confirmed to me this week by the relevant manager of Capital Projects, having pursued the matter

with the Council since. It has always struck me how this one park, above all others in the wider locality is totally void of basic amenities – by this I mean no public seating, shrubs and planting, trees, public bins, play spaces etc. It has essentially become a field filled with litter, remains of fires and glass covered

pathways.

“Back in May of this year, I had a motion passed at Area Committee requesting that Quarryvale Park be included in the Parks and Open Strategy for consideration for improvement works, bringing the park in line with other nearby parks such as Collinstown in North

Clondalkin and Willsbrook and Hermitage Parks in East Lucan – all of these spaces benefit from play areas, seating and have public bins located at every entrance.

begin to benefit from a valuable open piece of parkland for everyone to own and enjoy. The park has one soccer pitch but this is not currently allocated.

“The only part of Quarryvale Park that is maintained with any real diligence or care is the high hedgerow that is neatly maintained from the Fonthill road and separating the main roadway between the Liffey Valley multimillion euro corporate entrance end and the unkempt park itself.

Quarryvale Community Centre occupy the South West corner of the park with staff and volunteers helping to keep an eye to the park, but along with local residents, they are falling foul of the antisocial behavioural problems experienced in areas that are to some degree neglected. I now look forward to the improvement recommendations that will be forthcoming from the Public Realm operations and maintenance section in the Council.

“Quarryvale Park is 6 hectares in size and as such is underutilised. I belief that with some thought and investment, the local community could greatly

€35,000 IN SPORTS EQUIPMENT FUNDING FOR LOCAL CLUBS Funding of over €35,000 for new sports equipment will be a welcome boost to local clubs, Dublin Mid-West TD has said. Speaking about the Funding, Deputy Emer Higgins said: “I am delighted to announce that Dublin MidWest has been allocated over €35,000 in funding under the sports equipment grant. “This funding will be a really welcome boost to the four brilliant local clubs who will receive the funding,” said

Emer Higgins TD pictured with Sanjeeb Barik from Adamstown Cricket Club

Deputy Higgins.

“The four successful clubs are Lucan BMX Club, Lucan Cricket Club, Adamstown Cricket Club and Clondalkin Equine Club, who have each been granted funding under the equipment grant scheme. “Our clubs and sports teams are a huge part of our community and this year the sports equipment programme received a record number of applications with only the top scoring applicants from each country receiving funding so I am delighted that we have four of the successful clubs here in the constituency. “Covid has been a tough time for local clubs so I hope this funding will give them a welcome boost and allow them to upgrade their equipment to continue offering such brilliant outlets for physical and social activity in the community,” concluded Deputy Higgins. Applications for the Sports Capital Grant are still being processed and will be announced soon.

SHERRY FITZGERALD CELEBRATES WITH THE OPENING OF THEIR 99TH BRANCH IN TALLAGHT Ireland’s largest estate agents Sherry FitzGerald announced on the 16th August that they opened their 99th branch in Tallaght. community-based business offering excellent customer service. From our base in Tallaght, we will look after an extensive geography stretching from Tallaght itself out to Blessington and over to Clondalkin, which incidentally is where I grew up. This area has a combined population of over 100,00 people. Our location right in the heart of old Tallaght puts us at the centre of the

community. Tallaght itself is the size of Galway City, and in my opinion is a very significant location, which contributes so much to the City of Dublin.”

Will Moore, Regional Director, Sherry FitzGerald said “The Covid crisis has impacted us all in so many ways, but as we gradually emerge, and our economy reopens, there is clear evidence that people are very focused

on their living space with strong demand for all types of accommodation from apartments to houses alike. If we are to meet this demand, we do need to be more innovative in terms of the type of development we undertake. I believe it is possible to cleverly develop more middensity housing that give people more space and gardens, while still using land effectively.”

Commenting on the opening, Ronan Healy said; “The opening of our new Tallaght office is an acknowledgement of our confidence both in the market and the location. I joined Sherry FitzGerald in 2019, because I liked the fact that it was a

University School in Dublin 2, he said the Summer School gave him an opportunity to understand the fundamentals of how law works and provided an insight into the potential career options law offers. “I have always had an interest in law,” explained Seán. “I read crime novels and have watched many documentaries on criminal and corporate law with my Dad since I was very young. The Legal Ambitions Summer School gave me an opportunity to research the subject, listen to industry professionals who have chosen this career and learn what it takes to get there.”

“My favourite part was learning about the lives of solicitors that contributed to the course. In particular, Waheed Mudah, who was previously a qualified solicitor in Nigeria and had to requalify through the FE-1s (final examinations) and two additional exams to become a solicitor here in Ireland,” he said. “The course also provided me with a better understanding of the Courts System, the legal system in Ireland and how the law is a part of everyday life, including in society, humanity, business and various careers,” said Seán. Seán’s father, Eoghan O’Carroll, said, “The Legal Ambitions Summer School is an excellent resource for secondary school students considering a career in law. I would highly recommend this course. Seán is very excited about a future career in law and this course has given him great insight into the legal profession in Ireland.” Chairperson of the Law Society’s Education Committee, Richard Hammond SC, said, “At such a challenging time for students and parents, the Legal Ambitions Summer School provides four weeks of free and highly-engaging online legal education. The Law Society is delighted to provide this innovative, collaborative and ageappropriate resource for so many students across Ireland to learn about the law.” “Experienced solicitors, judges and professors delivered lessons on human

rights, employment law, criminal law and climate justice through workshops, video presentations and interviews. It is even possible that some of our course participants, like Seán, may be future legal leaders,” he said. The Summer School is part of the Law Society’s Public Legal Education Initiative, which aims to increase awareness of the law by teaching people about our legal system and how law impacts on society, so they can better exercise their legal rights and responsibilities. “Improving early access to legal education has positive benefits for everyone in our society. It creates a greater understanding of our own civil legal obligations but also opens

the door to careers in the legal profession,” said Mr Hammond. “Through the Summer School, we can also reach students who may not have considered a future in the legal profession and

we can encourage more young people from diverse backgrounds to nurture their legal ambitions and pursue a career as a solicitor,” explained Mr Hammond.

NOW IS THE TIME TO TACKLE LARGE CLASS SIZES TDs for Dublin Mid-West, Eoin Ó Broin and Mark Ward have called on the Minister for Education to urgently tackle large class sizes. The call comes as figures released show there are over 2,500 classes across the country with over 30 kids. O’Broin said: “The pandemic has shone a light on the fact that our education system is underfunded, understaffed and overcrowded. It is clear that overcrowding in classrooms is a huge problem. “Figures provided via a recent Parliamentary Question show that there were over 2,500 classes across the country with over 30 kids last year, with 169 of those classes in South Dublin. This is the second-highest in the country. The average class size in the area in 2020 was 24.1 , well above the EU average of 20.

FUNDRAISING HERO JACK GOES FOR GOLD IN THRILLING TRIATHLON An inspirational teenager from Dublin has completed his own version of an

Olympic triathlon to give back to two charities that have helped him and his

family throughout Covid-19 pandemic.

the

Jack O’Donovan (18) has cerebral palsy, epilepsy, is confined to a wheelchair, PEG-fed and non-verbal but none of that has stopped him from raising vital funds for Family Carers Ireland and the Central Remedial Clinic. Over the past two weeks, Jack has completed his version of a 10k triathlon by taking to the roads and the waterways with the help of his devoted parents Lynsey and Cathal and his three sisters, young carers Sophie, Robyn and Katie. Watched by family, friends and neighbours outside his home, the crowd chanted Jack’s name as he crossed the finish line. His mum Lynsey said she was proud of Jack’s achievement: “Jack is the most amazing, determined and happy young man. We are so proud of him. No matter what challenges he faces every day, he always comes out on top, he’s so strong and resolute and we couldn’t ask for more.” Jack requires 24hour care, so when his home support was stopped during the lockdown, his parents and younger sisters all took on extra responsibilities alongside the usual tasks

of washing, dressing, feeding, administering his medication and even turning him regularly overnight. When schools were forced to close, life became even tougher for the family. While his parents and sisters provided Jack with the best of care, Family Carers Ireland and the Central Remedial Clinic were on hand to help whenever they needed it. Reflecting on an extremely difficult year, Lynsey explained: “Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we had our nine hours of home support a week stopped, school stopped, everything stopped. Jack had nothing then. But what helped us through were the regular calls from Jack’s school and therapists in the CRC, and calls from Family Carers Ireland. It means a lot when you’re here on your own and trying to get by. That’s why we wanted to complete this challenge and give something back.” Funds raised for Family Carers Ireland will be directed to their hardship fund, which was set up as a result of the pandemic last year. The fund supports family carers who are in emotional, physical, and

financial crisis and has put food on tables, oil in tanks, paid for sensory equipment, behavioural assessments, hydrotherapy baths, specialised wheelchairs, respite and so much more. Monies raised for the CRC will go towards the refurbishment of the national feeding clinic based in Clontarf’s speech and language department. The clinic is often the first port of call for parents with new-born babies diagnosed with disabilities. Jack was three months old when he started attending the CRC and it was when he was seven years old that his mum and dad started to receive regular services from the feeding clinic as Jack developed difficulties with swallowing and eating. John Dunne, CEO of Family Carers Ireland, congratulated Jack on his incredible achievement: “A triathlon can be a gruelling event for any adult, so it’s no wonder Jack has become an inspiration to so many

people. His commitment and perseverance to complete this mammoth task is quite incredible. It shows us all the true meaning of sport and giving back. The money that Jack has raised will support family carers who are in crisis due to Covid-19.” Živa Newman, Head of Fundraising in the CRC, commended Jack on his dedication and perseverance in completing the 10k triathlon: “He is our Olympic gold champion never giving up and making his mam and dad and his three sisters, family and friends proud of him and his generosity by giving back. The monies that Jack raised will go towards refurbishing the national feeding clinic in CRC Clontarf which supports babies, children, teenagers and adults having problems with feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing.” To donate visit www. idonate.ie/LynseyOdonovan

THE CAMOGIE ASSOCIATION LAUNCH SKILL EVOLUTION The Camogie Association recently launched Skill Evolution. Skill Evolution is a suite of videos which provides coaches, teachers, parents and players a modern look at the technical skills of the game of Camogie and their progression across the player’s phased development. This resource provides an easily accessible tool which endeavours to maximise skill practices within Camogie’s youngest players in their formative years, through to the adult player who continues to refine their skillset in preparation for competitive action at club level and beyond. “The Games Development team looked first at the changing and differing

learning needs of the modern coach and player. We wanted to create something which lent itself to the modern player and something that would stimulate a clear vision of where a player/ group of players are in their development, where they are going, and give direction in getting there through their practices”, said Liam Clancy of the Camogie Association at this morning’s launch at Croke Park Stadium. Skill Evolution exhibits fifteen of the technical skills of the game of Camogie. Under 8, Under 12, Under 16 and Adult players act as signposts within the development of each skill providing a visual representation of the skill in

action whilst also providing succinct and appropriate coaching cues through the voiceover of Ciara Doyle (Scariff-Ogonelloe Camogie Club). Louise Conlon (Technical Development and Participation Manager, The Camogie Association) said; “It is our great pleasure to publish such a modern resource for the use of our members going forward. Skill Evolution can be utilised by all our members in a variety of ways, be it volunteering at underage Go Games level, involvement in speed leagues at youth level, or incorporating it as part of our many existing programmes such as the MNA Hurl With Me Programme. Skill Evolution offers viewers a vibrant

insight into the modernday Camogie player, as they progress through the phases of the Gaelic Games Player Pathway”. Liam Clancy said; “As a team, we wanted to produce something which was easily accessible and provided the short, sharp information

and visual that’s required. Skill Evolution does that and provides an anchor of support to the viewer, be they a player themselves or someone involved in the development of players within the game of Camogie. We looked across various sporting contexts in the search for resources which

subtly blend the phases of player development and the coaching of such but had little success. Skill Evolution depicts the smooth transition from phase to phase in the one place, at the one time”. To view see camogie. ie/development/skillevolution.

UNDER 19 LFA CUP RESULT Booth Road Celtic 3-2 Greystones AFC. A great game for the under 19s lads recently. They went 2-0 up before Greystones came back and drew level before an injury time penalty by ever impressive Callum Browne to claim their 4th win in the cup competition. Well done all!

MOTORING LIFE

WITH

NEW MERCEDES-BENZ EQA – INTELLIGENT ELECTRIC SUV By Breda Corrigan Mercedes-Benz introduced its first all-electric SUV on to the market in 2019 in the shape of the EQC, which was based on its already successful GLC. Now they have added another, yet smaller SUV to their all-electric model range. Called the EQA, the newcomer aims to offer a cheaper way into the German premium brand’s quickly expanding EQ range. The EQA sits on the same chassis as the GLA, although it’s been given some revisions to allow it accommodate an electric powertrain. The EQA is powered by an electric motor which works in conjunction with a 66.5kWh battery, while easy charging options allow a full charge (10% to 100%) in as little as five hours and forty-five minutes from a domestic wall box charger, or just 30 minutes from a public rapid-charge facility (10% to 80%).

three trim levels, with the EQA 250 Progressive being the base model, while Electric Art and AMG Line trim options are also on offer. A choice of power outputs (190, 228 or 292bhp – badged EQA 250, 300 and 350 respectively) and drivetrain options (frontwheel-drive or 4MATIC all-wheel-drive) across the range enables EQA customers to choose the trim, power and drivetrain that suits their needs best. The entry-level EQA 250 comes with a single electric motor with 190bhp and 375Nm of torque for instant acceleration.

and

Positioned under the bonnet, and driving the front wheels, it will accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 8.9 seconds - which is about the same as a regular GLA 200 with a 163bhp petrol engine – while an official range of up to 423km’s from a fullycharged battery should be enough for a number of days driving between charges for many drivers.

The EQA is available in

Visual differences between the Mercedes-Benz GLA and

Trim, Power Drivetrain Options;

EQA include the installation of a shiny gloss plastic front panel on the EQA in lieu of the traditional front grille on the GLA, along with the addition of lights strips front and rear, which is similar to its larger sibling, the EQC. Well-Appointed Cabin; The cabin in the EQA feels like a proper MercedesBenz, with great interior space and enough room in the back for taller adults to sit behind the front seat occupants, while the tall doors make it easy to get in and out. The EQA’s battery pack is located under the cabin and this results in a boot capacity of 340-litres, but this cargo volume can be increased to 1,320-litres when the 40:20:40 splitfolding rear seat backs are folded flat. Overall build quality is impressive and no matter which model is chosen, standard equipment is generous, with dual 10.25-inch displays creating a widescreen look across the top of the dash. The intuitive infotainment

system is excellent, with sharp graphics and a touchscreen which responds quickly to all inputs. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both standard across the EQA range, along with a nine speaker audio system. Test Car; My test car was an EQA 250 ‘Progressive’ finished in non-metallic Night Black paint with optional beige macchiato and black ARTICO leather interior. Key standard equipment on my car included: 18” 5-twin spoke light alloy wheels, 4-way lumbar support, acoustic ambient protection, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, light and sight package, 10.25” media display, mirror package, parking package with reversing camera including PARKTRONIC, ambient lighting, charging cable for domestic socket, charging cable for wall box and public charging stations, comfort suspension, cruise control, EasyPack tailgate, extended MBUX functions, hard-disc

navigation, heated front seats, keyless-go, LED highperformance headlamps, MBUX Multimedia system, pedestrian protection, and automatic climate control. Instant Torque and Acceleration;

occupants. Anyone who has driven an all-electric car will probably appreciate the instant hit of torque and rapid acceleration from a standing start, and the EQA doesn’t disappoint in this regard either.

The EQA handles in a predictably safe and secure fashion, while decent levels of regenerative braking mean that you can drive mostly with one pedal, making trips around town a little easier. This standard system is intuitive to use and it allows the driver to adjust the rate of deceleration in order to coast along a level road, or maintain speed on a downhill stretch. The suspension in the EQA provides supreme comfort when driving over rutted road surfaces and enhances the serenity on offer for all

Pricing & Verdict; The new Mercedes-Benz EQA is a very desirable electric SUV in every respect. The interior is comfortable, it is relaxing to drive, spacious and practical, while the very latest on-board technology is impressive. With the new EQA, Mercedes-Benz has indeed created a compact SUV with ‘Electric Intelligence’. Pricing for the new Mercedes-Benz EQA starts at €51,120 – inclusive of an SEAI grant (T’s & C’s apply).

€170K IN FUNDING FOR PEAMOUNT HOSPITAL

The National Health Capital Plan for 2021 will see €170,000 designated for vital reconfiguration works at Peamount Hospital in Newcastle. Dublin Mid-West’s Fine Gael TD, Emer Higgins has welcomed the announcement and the allocated funding for the Hospital, which will benefit patients with intellectual disabilities. “I really welcome this funding for Peamount Hospital which will allow them to reconfigure their existing high dependency unit for older patients with intellectual disabilities. “The covid-19 pandemic has changed the operation of our hospitals and ensuring they can be run in an environment that is safe for staff and patients is paramount. “This

funding will allow Peamount Hospital to reconfigure their existing multi occupancy space for older patients with intellectual disabilities into a mixture of one-bed and two bed occupancy rooms to allow for the necessary social distancing while still caring for fifteen patients in this unit. “Our health care workers have made phenomenal sacrifices and worked incredibly hard throughout this pandemic and I’m delighted to see that we are continuing to invest in our health service and allocate funding where its needed. I hope that this funding for Peamount will further improve the provision of care for patients while allowing staff to do their job safely.

It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning that I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly recreate me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit.
