Stone Centre CALLS ON COUNCIL TO AMEND Tallaght headstones crafted for all cemeteries ITS HOUSING ALLOCATIONS Tel: (01) 462 6200 Fax: (01) 462 6209 SYSTEM email: info@tallaghtstonecentre.ie web: tallaghtstonecentre.ie
Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe has called on South Dublin County Council to amend its Allocation System after it emerged that a homeless applicant who was told in February that she would be shortly housed has still not been able to move into the house. Teachta Crowe said that the homeless woman and her children have lost out on the possibility of alternative accommodation as she was removed from the system on
being told she had accommodation and it is unlikely she will be housed until next year, over 12 months after being told that she was being housed.
Teachta Crowe said: “South Dublin County Council needs to tighten up its allocation model as the experience of this young homeless woman and her family cannot be allowed to occur again. The family who are currently in a homeless hub were informed back in February that they would be housed in
Dodderbrook off the Oldcourt Road in Tallaght, but, because of building delays, will not be housed till early next year, over twelve months after being told that she was being housed. This unacceptable and means that this family will spend another Christmas in homeless accommodation. It also means that this family has missed out on other chances of accommodation in the Council area as they were supposedly allocated housing and
removed from the list.
“I am very much in favour in favour of giving a housing applicant plenty of notice to prepare to move into their new home as it is a huge task for anyone to get beds, furniture, and all the everyday essentials for a new accommodation. It is particularly hard for anyone homeless as, in many cases, they just have a change of clothes.

Belgard Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24.
I have contacted South Dublin and CLUID Housing agency today about this sad and difficult case. They are, I believe, genuinely apologetic to this family, but I am hoping changes will be made immediately so no other family has to experience the high of being allocated new accommodation only to find that they won’t be housed until a long twelve months later.”

CONCERN OVER FLOODING IN CORKAGH PARK
Cllr William Carey has expressed concern regarding the recent flooding that occurred at the duck pond in Corkagh Park. The Clondalkin Councillor said that the recent wet weather had made the top surface fairly soft and that South Dublin County Council (SDCC) need to monitor the flow into the Camac river and ensure that no blockages occur in the system that may cause overflows such as that which occurred recently.
Despite assurances from SDCC management that the flooding was caused by a blocked drain that was subsequently cleared by council staff, local
residents in Cherrywood Crescent expressed concern about the delay in by SDCC to react to the flooding. One resident stated that it took the council 5 days to react to the flooding that occurred and to clear the problem.
In a reply given at the area committee to a question posed by Cllr Carey, SDCC stated, “The lakes in question were completed in 2000 as part of a flood alleviation scheme to protect the downstream Clondalkin households from flooding. As such they were designed to retain water in periods of heavy rainfall and if necessary, overspill on the neighbouring park

lands without damage to property. On receipt of the recent complaint of footpath flooding, the Drainage Operations Section removed the silted up non-return valve on the pond outlet and constructed a temporary weir downstream to prevent the lake emptying completely. There appears to be a change in the flow regime to the lakes and this present arrangement appears to be successfully dealing with this” According to Cllr Carey, this explanation does not adequately explain the flooding problem and in fact raises more questions about the “change in flow to the lakes”. Residents of near-by Cherrywood Crescent are concerned that the recent build at Corkagh grange may be affecting the level of flow of rainwater into the system. Following further questions at the local area committee meeting from Cllr Carey, SDCC responded by stating that “The drainage design for the Corkagh Grange
development has been developed in accordance with Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) design principles, which is mandatory and applies to all new developments.
Compliance with these design principles ensures that surface water run-off from a new development
will mimic the run-off that exists in the greenfield state, the run off has been designed to remain within our boundary therefore there is no risk of flooding into adjacent developments. The surface water drainage system disperses rainwater from the pavement via appropriately designed
carrier drains through an attenuation system before discharge into the final drainage connection. John Sisk & Son, the Works Contractor, has confirmed that the surface water drainage system has been designed and installed in accordance with the planning and construction requirements.

LOCAL COUNCILLORS DISAPPOINTED WITH SDCC DISCRETIONARY FUND DECISION
FF-FG-GP vote for a discretionary fund over a proposal for a new participatory teen budget.
On behalf of Independent councillors Mick Duff, Alan Edge, Liona O’Toole, Eoin O’Broin, Guss O’Connell and Francis Timmons, Labour councillors Pamela Kearns and Joanna Tuffy and Social Democrat Carly Bailey, they wish to make the following statement. The ruling group in South
County Council of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Green Party, supported by two independents, have voted to include a €60,000 ‘discretionary fund’ for use by the chairs of the Local Area Committees, themselves appointed by the ruling group. The move met with opposition from independent councillors Mick Duff, Alan Edge, Liona O’Toole, Eoin O’Broin,
Guss O’Connell and Francis Timmons, Labour councillors Pamela Kearns and Joanna Tuffy and Social Democrat Carly Bailey who together proposed instead that the money go to fund a participatory budget for young people to be administered by the Council and Comhairle na nÓg. With 30 secondary schools in the county, the funds could have been used to great effect for the benefit
of young people who have been among the groups who’ve suffered greatly as a result of the impacts of covid. They were supported in this by PBP, Solidarity and Sinn Féin.
of overseas junkets, that money should be used to pay for a feasibility study for the County Museum proposed by Tallaght Community Council as agreed in the Tallaght Local Area Plan.
The councillors also sought to stop Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, the Greens and their two independent colleagues from voting for €20,000 for councillors overseas expenses. The group proposed that instead
Fianna Fáil Mayor Ed O’Brien controversially ruled this out of order. At a time of unprecedented financial uncertainty, the group said, it’s appallingly tone deaf that Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party should vote for junkets over a variety of alternatives put forth, including a special social distance-transport fund to benefit community groups such as Active Agers
in the era of covid. The discretionary fund has been described by the opposing group as ‘little more than a slush fund’, the very worst kind of Tammany hall style local politics, tone-deaf and ripe for abuse, a return to the political dark ages of using largesse to buy votes. “That Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Greens can’t find the money to pay student nurses and midwives for their work but do see fit to allocate €20,000 for overseas junkets for themselves during a pandemic is utterly deplorable and reprehensible” concluded the group of Councillors.
LOCAL COUNCILLOR CONGRATULATES SHAMROCK ROVERS FC Local Tallaght Councilor Charlie O’Connor recently put a motion to the South Dublin County Council (SDCC) Tallaght area committee. The motion read “That this Tallaght Area Committee warmly congratulates Shamrock Rovers Football Club on winning the 2020 Airtricity League; applauds Stephen Bradley and his squad and all involved at the Club and Tallaght Stadium; and also calls on the Chief Executive to arrange to honor the achievement in an appropriate manner when it is possible to do so.” The SDCC reply included “If the motion is passed, a letter of congratulations will issue on behalf of the Committee to Shamrock Rovers Football Club. The matter of an event or occasion to honor the achievement when possible to do so will be discussed with Corporate Services”.

OAKFIELD TRUST SEEKING NEW BOARD MEMBERS The property-based social enterprise, which is located in Clondalkin, is aiming to fill a number of vacant spaces for board members in 2021. Oakfield Trust has been operating in the Clondalkin area for more than 20 years and provides a range of property based services and related supports to local communities and projects. There are currently four
active board members, but Oakfield Trust is seeking three additional candidates to oversee the running of the organisation. The Board of Oakfield Trust is a voluntary, collective decision-making and oversight body acting in the best interests of the organisation. It is now recruiting additional members as the organisation continues
to develop and innovate in response to new and emerging needs. Oakfield Trust is seeking people with experience in any of the following sectors; Finance, Property Development and Management, Planning and Legal, Business Management/ HR; Communications/ Marketing/Social Media to join the board which meets approximately 10 times a year for two hours, usually mornings on Tuesdays/Thursdays where applicable.
Former CEO of the Clondalkin Partnership, Aileen O’Donoghue, set up the board in 1996. Aileen had the idea for the organisation after reading about similar ‘Community Corporations’ in the USA which helped disadvantaged communities to acquire funding and premises for local projects.
of the Oakfield Trust Board of Directors. Aileen said: “It is about community investing in itself – spending money to generate money within the area. There was not much property available for local groups at the time and I thought there was an opportunity for community groups to benefit. The [Clondalkin] partnership needed property and, as the CEO, part of my job was to look for space - but there was nothing suitable available. Eventually we found a property and refurbished it and I thought it was a good opportunity for an organisation to do that on behalf of other community groups.” Oakfield
Trust
currently
acquires and manages properties which are then leased to organisations that work with marginalised groups and socially excluded communities in South Dublin. The organisation seeks to act as a catalyst for social gain by providing a range of property solutions for community, public and private endeavours, and using surplus profits to assist community-based initiatives.
Oakfield Trust also offers loans and grants, property management services and development advice to local projects and groups. Aileen said: “Board members look at the governance of the organisation, to ensure Oakfield Trust is meeting legal requirements,
financial oversight, strategic planning and that is where we are now. Ideally, we would like three or four new people who are interested, able and motivated. People who are skilled in finance, marketing or those with property expertise would be a fantastic fit. We would love to have some people from the local area on the board too.” If you are interested in joining the Oakfield Trust Board of Directors please contact Chairperson Brendan Bartley at Brendan. bartley@gmail.com or Manager Marie Duffin at MDuffin@OakfieldTrust.ie. SDCC’S BUSINESS SUPPORT FUND HELPS REGENERATE THE COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENT The Business Support Funds is an initiative of South Dublin Council that came out of the Business Sustainability Programme which was established a number of years ago to provide real support to the businesses of South Dublin, in particular the SME sector. The Business Support Fund which comprises of 4 different funds is open to Micro and Small businesses to help regenerate the commercial environment in the county, and to invigorate employment and inward investment. The funds are available to individual existing businesses who want to enhance the profile of the building they occupy, to redevelop their premises to further grow their business or support a new entrepreneur or promotor to start up a new microenterprise. An Industrial Area fund is also available to occupiers and landlords who come together to enhance and improve the attractiveness of their local business areas. The funds are designed to: • Support physical improvement works. • Encourage occupiers to improve the investment potential of industrial estates / units. • Improve those industrial estates experiencing high levels of obsolescence, dereliction, vacancy and
abandonment.
• Help existing small-scale businesses and start-up businesses who are utilising previously vacant units. And are offered as part of the suite of business supports that are available through the Local Enterprise Office South Dublin. ‘We have provided funding for local area improvements across the county including for example Cookstown and Greenhills Road says Peter Connolly, Business Advisor LEO and added ‘ we are seeing an increasing demand for the upgrade of individual units and establishment of new businesses across a wide range of sectors including food, tech and Gyms such as Cifit who benefited from a grant to convert a vacant unit into a fitness studio’ he added. CiFit worked with LEO South Dublin to set up her own fitness studio in Clondalkin with the support of a grant under the Business Support Micro Enterprise Fund Ciara Murray is the owner/ operator of a Women’s Fitness Studio, Ci-Fit Studio in Clondalkin. As with all new businesses Ciara was wary of taking the first steps “Financially, I knew this was going to be a huge burden and with not enough savings, I didn’t think it would be achievable. I searched online to check if
there any grants to help a new business. Straightaway South Dublin Local Enterprise Office popped up and I was put in touch with a Business Advisor. From the get-go, LEO were nothing but helpful and my dreams of becoming a business owner seemed less distant. I applied, did all the paperwork I needed to do, and I began my next journey, I was terrified!
“Opening your own business is so daunting but the Local Enterprise Office have made this experience so much easier for me. Any move I made, any question I had, they there within a few hours to reassure me that they would help me wherever they could and they DID. “ With assistance through the Local Enterprise Office’s Business Support Fund Ciara was able to receive financial assistance to renovate a vacant industrial unit“ The process was so much easier than I thought it would be. After investing so much into something, there was no better feeling than knowing that you were going to receive help financially. STUDENT NURSE VOTE SHOWS HOW LITTLE GOVERNMENT VALUES WORKERS AND STUDENT Eoghan Gardiner, Secretary of Workers’ Party Youth, has reacted to the decision taken by the government to vote against paying student nurses. Gardiner said: “The fact that the government has voted against paying student nurses, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, shows how little they value workers, students and our families.” “They’ll happily sing the praises of student nurses for a bit of good publicity, only then to vote against their interests when it matters. Do they take frontline workers for fools?” he continued. Concluding, Gardiner said: “Society at large has shown a deep respect for frontline workers throughout the pandemic, but it’s clearly just been lip service from the government all along.”
Lately, I’ve been avoiding my messages like the plague By Bronagh Lyons As an Empath I am very in-tune with energies. Since January there have been many intense strong energies in the world with so many different feels and agendas to them. I just can’t. I cannot. I’ve been panicky and anxious about my inboxes (how many messager apps does a person really need) as I have no previous knowledge or control over what is on the other side of the message notification until I open it. The only control I have is whether I open it or not - and that is my choice. So, I’ve realised that the reason I’ve been so reluctant to open messages is because in a world full of intense energy I’ve been grasping to protect my own. I’ve created my own energetic bubble. It’s interesting how we react and respond in different circumstances. I’ve found that instead I’ve been spending a lot of time offscreen reading and writing and making progress on projects and just BEING and it’s been great. We have these internal nudges pointing us in the best direction for us and my joy is in following those nudges. Those nudges are keeping me out of my inboxes. In this time of intense energy (and in time in general) it’s ok to say no and to protect your energy - actually its necessary. Fill your own cup first. Where are your internal nudges guiding you?

LOCAL SUPPORT AVAILABLE FOR THOSE WITH ALCOHOL ISSUES The European Awareness week on Alcohol related harm took place from
the 16th to the 20th of November 2020. The annual week is aimed to
raise awareness among EU policy holders of the harms caused by alcohol,
to increase awareness of the need to address alcohol related harm in Europe and highlight the need to address it through an integrated approach to alcohol policy. This year the theme was Alcohol and Cancer. The current public health pandemic COVID_19 is understandably causing many of us stress and upheaval. We are worrying about ourselves, our loved ones, and our very way of living. For many of us the current stresses are bringing to the fore earlier traumas and collectively we are also absorbing the multiple anxieties around us. During times like this, it might be difficult to stay on top of how much we are drinking, or indeed there might be an inclination to drink more heavily and more frequently as we reach out for something to numb the tension. Unfortunately, this leads to a corresponding rise in anxiety, depression and irritability and so to greater stresses. Relationships may also be coming under pressure as the drinking increases. Alcohol also has a damaging effect on your immune system and will not stimulate immunity and virus resistance. This leads me onto the theme for European Alcohol Awareness week, Alcohol and Cancer. Alcohol is a known cause of seven types of Cancer including mouth, throat, larynx, oesophagus, breast, liver and bowel. By reducing your intake of Alcohol you are not only improving your mental and physical wellbeing you are also reducing your risk of developing cancer.
Fiona Murphy works for TDATF (Tallaght Drug & Alcohol Taskforce) commented “In my role as Alcohol Development worker for the Taskforce I attend the Community Action on Alcohol Network (ICAAN). ICAAN is made up Local and Regional Drug Taskforces and their aim is to build the capacity of communities by identifying alcohol issues and developing local Alcohol Action Plans. During the first lockdown we commissioned a Red C Poll. The results found that those above 25 are having more
of a reliance on alcohol, and almost 1 in 3 were drinking more alcohol since Covid_19 restrictions were introduced. So, we are encouraging people to look at their own relationship with alcohol and if you or a loved one is in need of support, there are many supports available to you. We developed a Community Alcohol Programme and ran our first Alcohol Programme in January, however due to Covid restrictions our group work ceased. One to one phone support was continued with, and participants have managed to successfully maintain sobriety. The demand for this programme has been quite significant, the numbers presenting to services with alcohol issues has increased so we will
be commencing the 2nd round of the programme with new participants soon and if anyone would like more information they can contact me on 087 2742129. This will be held in a new project TASP (Tallaght Addiction Support Project) in Fettercairn. BUSINESSES SHOULD APPLY FOR NEW BREXIT LOAN SCHEME
Small businesses in Dublin should apply for a new loan to help them prepare for Britain’s exit from the single market and customs union at the end of this year, Senator Seery Kearney has said. Senator Mary Seery Kearney said, “I know that Brexit will be challenging for businesses and they want to be prepared, so I welcome the opening of this new scheme by the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar T.D.
“The new Microfinance Ireland (MFI) Brexit Business Loan, will provide up to €25,000 to businesses whose turnover already is or is likely to fall 15% or more or if the business has a short term cash flow need as a result of Brexit. Loans are available for between six months and three years. “Any business, including a Sole Trader, Partnership or Limited Company, with less than 10 employees and annual turnover of up to €2 million can apply, where they are unable to secure finance from a Bank
or commercial lending provider. Businesses can apply through their Local Enterprise Office Network or can apply directly to Microfinance Ireland (MFI). “There are less than 50 days until the end of the transition period on 31 December. It is urgent that all businesses large and small in Dublin now revisit their readiness plans. “From 1 January, the UK will no longer apply the rules of the EU’s Single Market and Customs Union. This means that any business that moves goods from, to or through Great Britain will be subject to a range of customs formalities, SPS checks and other regulatory requirements that do not apply to such trade today. “There is now an extensive range of training material and information available online on the Government’s new Brexit Information Hub to help businesses prepare for Brexit and the lasting change that it will bring. The hub can be accessed via Gov.ie/getbrexitready,”
Senator Seery Kearney said. Announcing details of the scheme, Minister Varadkar said: “I know it’s been a really hard year, especially for our small, local businesses and imminent Brexit feels like another
bodyblow on the way. This new loan is just one of the ways we are helping business to prepare. “It will provide low cost finance of up to €25,000 and business owners can apply
through MFI. 77% of MFI’s lending is to businesses outside of Dublin, which is important as businesses all over Ireland will feel the negative effects of Brexit. “If you are a business owner
and are wondering where to start, I’d recommend filling out our Brexit Readiness Checker first and having a look at what needs to be done in your business. Then please reach out and use the help that’s there.”

New Peugeot 2008 SUV – The Small SUV Redefined By Breda Corrigan
Sales of small SUVs have rocketed in the last few years, so it is little wonder that the Peugeot 2008 has become one of the French brand’s most important models. The original 2008 replaced the Peugeot 207SW (Station Wagon) in 2013, and went on to sell over 1-million units in the intervening years. Now, Peugeot has launched the second generation of their small SUV, and with it comes a huge leap forward in terms of style, safety, infotainment, engine technology, and overall build quality. A more daring exterior design than its predecessor really set’s the new 2008 apart from the small SUV crowd, while the striking cabin of the car puts most of its rivals to shame. Ultra-Modern Design; While the original 2008 possessed curvy, smooth lines, the latest model is far more angular, taking design cues from the larger Peugeot 3008 SUV – a former Irish & European Car of the Year winner. An imposing grille, protruding chin spoiler and fanglike LED daytime running lights give the new 2008 a distinctive look, while the car looks rugged and robust from every angle. Rivals to the new 2008 include the Renault Captur, Ford Puma, Hyundai Kona, Nissan Juke and the Skoda Kamiq, so buyers of small SUV’s have never had it so good. Space & Style In Abundance; Measuring in at 4,300mm, the new 2008 is longer than its predecessor, with this extra length resulting in more interior space, thereby improving room for rear-seat passengers in particular. Legroom throughout the cabin is impressive, and there is plenty of space for feet under the front seats, while head and elbow room is also excellent.
In keeping with other models in the revitalised Peugeot range, the 2008’s interior is stunningly designed and cleverly laid out, with flourishes like the piano keys in the middle of the dashboard and the latest version of Peugeot’s i-Cockpit taking centre stage. Build quality throughout the cabin is excellent, with ample use of soft materials on visible surfaces providing a premium feel. Petrol, Diesel & Electric Power; The new platform underpinning the new 2008 (along with its 208 supermini sibling) supports petrol, diesel and allelectric power, with a clever traction control system called Advanced Grip Control available for times when you need to keep going in slippery conditions. A 1.2-litre Puretech turbocharged petrol engine (with stop/start technology) is available with a choice of 100, 130 or 155bhp – with the latter option only available in range-topping GT trim with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while a 1.5-litre BlueHDi turbo-diesel engine with 100bhp is also offered. A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard with the Puretech 100 and 130bhp engines, along with the sole BlueHDi unit, while the Puretech 130bhp engine can also be specified in automatic guise. Trim Levels; In a similar fashion to the smaller 208, the 2008 is offered in Active, Allure, GT Line and GT trim levels. Equipment is very generous, with even the basic version getting 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, LED headlights and Peugeot’s amazing i-Cockpit™ including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.
Fact Box; 1) Striking Modern Design 2) Class-Leading Interior 3) Petrol, Electric or Electric 4) Generous Equipment Levels 5) Priced From Just €23,900 (ex-works). Test Car; My test car was a new Peugeot 2008 Allure 1.5 BlueHDi 6-speed manual and was finished in stylish Nimbus Grey metallic paint for an upmarket visual impact. Producing 102bhp and 250Nm of torque, the 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in 10.2-seconds, while a top speed of 185km/h can be achieved (where permitted). Fuel economy is equally impressive, with as little as 4.6 litres of fuel being consumed for every 100km’s driven on a combined driving cycle, while annual road tax is just €180. On the road, the new 2008 handles neatly and securely with minimal body roll in corners, while the high set
driving position and large glass areas ensure excellent visibility. Refinement is strong overall, while the cars admirable suspension set-up does a great job of coping with humps and bumps in the road. The car’s slick manual gearbox is a joy to use, and contributes to making the new 2008 the supersmooth small SUV that it is, while parking sensors front & rear, and a 180-degree Visio Park rear view camera make light work of parking in a crowded supermarket car park. Standard Allure specification includes 17” ‘Salamanca’ alloy wheels, gloss balck B-pillar, gloss black roof bars, gloss black rear cluster connecting strip, automatic airconditioning, central front
arm-rest with integrated cup holders, heated electrically operated door mirrors with power fold functionality, parking sensors front & rear, 3D configurable i-Cockpit™, and rear privacy glass. The interior of the new 2008 sees the instruments sit above the dashboard, with a small and sporty steering wheel beneath them. With plenty of adjustment options for the driver’s seat and steering wheel, it is easy to find a perfect driving position. Build quality within the entire cabin is exceptional, with a sharp design and comfortable seats marking the new 2008 out a car that tends to make many of its rivals look dated in comparison. The ‘Traxx’ leather-effect and ‘Isabella’ cloth trim in
my test car looked and felt great, while an impressive 434-litres of boot space with the rear seats in place can be expanded to a huge 1,467mm when the rear seat backs are folded, thereby offering terrific practicality. Verdict & Pricing; Overall, I found the new Peugeot 2008 to be a genuinely handsome car, excellent to drive, frugal, refined and comfortable, with a class-leading interior. Pricing starts from just €23,900 (ex-works), with my test car costing €27,850 (ex-works). All Peugeot passenger cars are supplied with a comprehensive 5-Year/100,000km warranty for total peace of mind motoring.

All-New SEAT Leon wins Golden Steering Wheel Award
The all-new SEAT Leon has won the much-coveted Golden Steering Wheel Award in Germany. The SEAT Leon 1.5 eTSI model was crowned the winner in the “Best price / product ratio up to 35,000 euros” category by a jury of experts organised by AUTO BILD, Germany’s leading automobile magazine. When voting on the nominated vehicles, the team of experts considered multiple factors, including how each car drives, entry price and standard equipment.
The “Goldenes Lenkrad” or Golden Steering Wheel was launched by Axel Springer in 1976 and is considered as one of the most important awards in the automotive industry, combining both customer and expert votes. A total of twelve golden steering wheels were awarded in 2020 and AUTO BILD readers were able to choose their favourites amongst 63 models which were launched from October 2019 onwards. The three models with the most votes in each of the eight vehicle categories qualified for the finals at the DEKRA Lausitzring in early October 2020. On the test track, an expert jury including racing drivers
such as Sophia Flörsch, Daniel Abt, Mattias Ekström and Hans-Joachim Stuck, evaluated all 24 candidates according to criteria based on the AUTO BILD test scheme.
The all-new SEAT Leon, which launched into the Irish market in June, comes with innovative technologies and is SEAT’s first fully connected vehicle. It will also be the brand’s first plug-in hybrid model when it launches into Ireland next month. With its combination of impressive design, inspired by the light of Barcelona and technological advancements, the all-new SEAT Leon brings a breath of fresh air into the compact class. Speaking about the awards, Wayne Griffiths, President of SEAT and CUPRA said “We are proud that our new SEAT Leon received the “Goldenes Lenkrad” or Golden Steering Wheel and stood out to the experts among the models in its category. This award is so rewarding for the team involved in the launch of the All-New Leon, a car designed, developed and produced in Barcelona. At SEAT and CUPRA we are currently in the middle of the largest product
offensive in our history with models such as the SEAT and CUPRA Leon, the CUPRA Formentor and the future CUPRA el-Born. This award gives us renewed strength to look confidently into the future.”

THE DUBLIN DEVILS F.C. ANNOUNCE NEW PARTNERSHIP Dublin Devils F.C. (the “Dublin Devils”) is delighted to announce its new partnership with Irish Life and Canada Life, who will become the club’s new primary sponsors.
Since forming in 2005 as Ireland’s first LGBT+ football club, the Dublin Devils have grown to become an integral part of Dublin’s LGBT+ community. While one of the club’s main aims is to provide a space for the community to enjoy sport, the Dublin Devils have always maintained an inclusive policy, and welcome anyone who loves football.
see the Irish Life logo feature on the Dublin Devils’ domestic playing kits, with the Canada Life logo used for any international tournaments the team takes part in, such as the 2021 EuroGames in Copenhagen.
The club has a number of 11-a-side and 6-a-side teams, catering for both competitive and social players, and has enjoyed notable success in recent years - its 11-a-side team finished 4th at the 2018 Gay Games in Paris, while last year one of its social 6-a-side teams brought home Bronze medals from the EuroGames in Rome.
Speaking about the partnership, John McAree, Chairperson of the Dublin Devils, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Irish Life and Canada Life, brands which are synonymous with health and wellness. That coupled with their strong commitment to inclusiveness makes them the ideal partners for us. Above all, our club promotes playing sport, not just to improve physical fitness, but also to ensure the community can experience the mental health benefits which can come from being part of a club, and making life-long friends. The partnership will allow us to continue to pursue our goal of making Ireland’s football community a truly inclusive one.”
The partnership with Irish Life and Canada Life, which is being launched today in conjunction with Irish Life’s Pride in Diversity staff network, highlights Irish Life’s continued strong commitment to Ireland’s LGBT+ community. It will

us, particularly in these difficult times when the impacts of COVID-19 have threatened the existence of so many clubs like ours, it shows a deep and genuine commitment to Ireland’s LGBT+ community. For grassroots clubs like ours, having a partner like Irish Life and Canada Life allows us to focus and plan for a bright future as we come out of lockdown.” Colum Ward, chair of the Irish Life’s Pride in Diversity Network, said: “We are delighted to be coming on board as the Dublin Devils main sponsor. The club has given so much to the LGBT+ community over the past 15 years and we are proud to support them. It is particularly appropriate to launch this sponsorship on 1st December, World AIDS Day, where people worldwide unite in the fight against HIV. It is also happening in a year where our staff and customers demonstrated great resilience and support against another global virus.” Anyone who would be interested in getting involved in the Devils, either as a player, supporter or otherwise, is encouraged to reach out to the club, who would be delighted to hear from you.
Pic Credit: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile The Basketball Ireland Men’s National Competitions Committee (MNCC) has decided it has no alternative but to cancel the 2020/21 Super League and Division One league season. It follows a meeting to consider the most recent Covid-19 guidelines from the Irish government. No decision has been made over the 2020/21 Men’s National Cup. The MNCC is extremely disappointed that its case for commencement of play in the National Leagues on January 9th behind closed doors, with extra rigorous testing in place, has not been considered properly. It is felt that fair play and consultation has not happened and we can only conclude that we are not trusted to act in a safe and responsible manner. We note that many national basketball leagues are taking place throughout Europe with the agreement of the government and health authorities in those countries. As our clubs have commercial commitments as a semi-professional league and cannot be left in uncertainty any longer. We
will continue to make the case to the political decision-makers for the playing of elite basketball in 2021. We hope that a competition may be possible in February/ March, which will give our players and supporters something to look forward to. This is a difficult and disappointing decision to have made but we trust our community understands that we feel it is the only reasonable action to take. Basketball Ireland CEO and chair of the MNCC, Bernard O’Byrne, said: “Basketball Ireland has been lobbying the government, but still has been ignored. It shall not stop fighting for recognition and answers from the government. The MNCC feel that certainty is needed and we cannot keep our clubs, players, officials and volunteers waiting. We would have loved to start our season on January 9th, but we’ve been left with no choice. Basketball Ireland has been doing its utmost to help our clubs during these difficult times and it shall continue to do so.“
€40M SPORTS CAPITAL AND EQUIPMENT PROGRAMME
Minister Darragh O’Brien TD has encouraged sports clubs to apply for the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (SCEP) when it opens for applications on Friday the 11th of December.
applications open next Friday. We’ve seen clearly through the years that investment in communities through the programme has been hugely successful and of great benefit to the Dublin area.
€40 million has been announced for the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme and clubs can apply for grants online from 11th December to 12th February, 2021. Commenting Minister O’Brien said, “Sports clubs should register on the Department’s online system and then apply once
“We’ve also seen that this year in particular, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, sport has been an outlet which people of all ages have turned to. It’s critical for our physical and mental wellbeing. “This grant provides essential amenities for young people in particular
and at the end of the day if we want as many young people as possible to participate in sport, we need to have appropriate facilities and equipment available. “As Chair of the North Dublin Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force I know that there are huge knockon benefits in having young people participate in sport clubs and it’s grants like these which keep it all going. “Any club which needs assistance in their application can feel free to contact my office,” he concluded.
