EARLY PILOT DATA CONFIRMS COUNTY-WIDE MISUSE OF NITROUS ‘BULLETS’ South Dublin County Council Councillor Derren Ó Brádaigh has expressed both welcome and concern at the initial results from data collated from a pilot mapping project being carried out by South Dublin County Council, into the misuse of nitrous oxide as an inhalant across the county.

Ó Brádaigh was speaking after he received a detailed response to an official question that he raised

this month. The LucanPa l m e r s t o w n - N o r t h Clondalkin councillor said; “Worrying, but not surprising details have this week been confirmed to me, regarding the gathering of data since my motion in July, as to the locations where discarded nitrous oxide canisters have been reported and or removed by council work crews. My understanding is that this mapping exercise was to take place for a

period of three to four months, however I am encouraged to learn that the intention is to continue the pilot for 12 months up until next summer in order to garner a fuller picture. “In July I had this motion agreed at a sitting of the full Council meeting. I believe that more needs to be done, and for that reason I asked that the Council agree to write to the Minister for Public Health, WellBeing and National

Drugs Strategy, Frank Feighan, with a view to rolling out a national awareness campaign. I welcome the recent new colour advertisements on the HSE website warning of the dangers in this regard, but we need to take greater action.

“The exercise to record this data has been undertaken by the Public Realm Department since August with information collected pertaining to 18 major locations, that cover just about every major park and many vicinities in every constituency in the county. Together with more general anti-social related incidences occurring in our public parks, this really does raise questions about how we monitor our own park spaces and what can we do to take them back. “It is also intended that other departments such as Housing will be asked to provide any relevant information that they have on the matter and this will

County Council parks to achieve this award. Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Councillor Peter Kavanagh raised the flag on Friday the 19th November 2021 and said “ The raising of the green flag recognises and rewards the provision of high-quality parks and green spaces. It is a great achievement for SDCC Public Realm to have won such a prestigious award for Tymon Park. This award demonstrates the hard work of staff in the park in implementing the Council’s parks management plan. The park is a haven for local residents especially in this time of Covid restrictions. Without our public parks and gardens our lives would have been much further reduced and confined. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the hard work put in by park staff, and community volunteers and residents’ groups.” The Green Flag is awarded by an Taisce and rates the management of parks by local authorities across

criteria including safety, cleanliness, conservation, sustainability, and community involvement. Tymon Park is one of 84 public parks from across the

country to achieve a Green Flag award in 2021. The Green Flag Award is a highly regarded international benchmark

that recognises and rewards the provision of high-quality parks and green spaces, the award scheme is managed here in the Republic of Ireland by An Taisce.

NEW LEGISLATION TO TACKLE UNSAFE DRIVING OF QUADS AND SCRAMBLERS WELCOMED

TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has welcomed new legislation to tackle the unsafe use of quad and scrambler bikes in community spaces, but asked that local gardaí are given assurances as to how this new law will work in practice. Teachta Crowe also asked parents to consider how suitable quads or scramblers are as a Christmas present and where it is their child will ride these vehicles.

Speaking in the Dáil recently, Teachta Crowe said: “If the Minister were to travel to parts of my constituency - and he can go out there now if he wants - he would hear the buzzing noise of scrambler and quad bikes. This goes on from early in the morning to late at night. These bikes are used on main roads and green spaces, without the least bit of regard for pedestrians or other road users. Users do not wear helmets or high-visibility

clothing. They tear up and down the streets on dark evenings. There are near misses everyday involving children or elderly people out with prams.

“In recent weeks, the Tallaght Drug and Alcohol Task Force published a comprehensive report on the effects of crack cocaine in the area. The Minister probably saw it reported in the media. Even in that report, the bikes feature. According to the report, there is clear evidence that the bikes are being used to transport drugs and dealers are patrolling neighbourhoods on scrambler bikes as a way of staking out their territory and intimidating the entire community through their visibility and engine noise. “I would like to think that the new Garda powers to stop and seize vehicles will enable them to be much more proactive in tackling these issues. It is a welcome

move that will give them more powers to safeguard our streets, parks, and green spaces. However, my worry is that the reluctance previously displayed by the Garda will continue. Members of the Garda are worried that they will end

up in front of GSOC or in court. Therefore, there needs to be balance in this issue. We need assurances from the Minister that whatever legislation is passed in this House, there will be follow-up on it. We must ensure that we are

not just going through the motions.

“Half the accidents involving quad bikes or scramblers involve children under the age of 18. Christmas is approaching, and we should all appeal to parents not to

buy these vehicles. They are not toys. I ask parents not to buy them. If the only space available to drive a scrambler on is the local GAA pitch or a green space, then it is not safe or appropriate, and people should not do so.”

HOT SCHOOL MEALS PROGRAMME FURTHER EXTENDED TO FOUR LOCAL SCHOOLS The extension of the hot school meals programme will support a further four local schools in Dublin Mid-West, a local TD has said. Deputy Emer Higgins has welcomed the announcement that four schools across Lucan and Clondalkin are among the 81 additional primary schools who will benefit from an extension of the Hot School Meals Programme run by the Department of Social Protection. Deputy Higgins said, “This €3 million investment will see 81 additional DEIS schools invited to join the Hot School Meals Programme from

January 2022 and I am delighted that four of those schools are in Dublin Mid-West. “The Schools include Lucan East Educate Together NS, St Bernadette’s Junior and Senior National Schools in Quarryvale and St Peter Apostle Senior National School in Neilstown,” said Deputy Higgins. “The Hot School Meals Programme is a vital resource for so many children and their families in Dublin Mid-West and ensures that these children are well-nourished during the school day, a factor which we know is so important for concentration, cognitive behaviour and school performance but can be a struggle for

many families” said Deputy Higgins. “We now have 55,000 pupils receiving hot schools meals nationally and I am delighted to see this programme now benefitting so many children in our local community. “The programme began in 2019 and the Minister has been gradually increasing its rollout,” added Deputy Higgins “I know that a number of schools in Dublin Mid-West would still like to avail of this programme and I hope to see it further rolled out in the area to ensure that more pupils can have the benefit of a hot meal in the school day,” concluded Deputy Higgins.

NEW BUS SERVICE A CAUSE OF UNEASE FOR LUCAN WEST COMMUTERS Cllr Ó Brádaigh said: “Dodsborough is one of the older residential parts of Lucan and currently transitioning to embrace surrounding newer community developments. This is a core established community in Lucan, comprising of a population dependent on essential local service access and drastically in need of an improved transport service. The much larger nearby developments, such as Shackleton, Hallwell, Gandon and St Helen’s, comprise mostly of younger working families lumbered with new hefty mortgages and crucially dependent on a good network to get to work. “Despite the goodwill and presence of ‘TFI/Dublin Bus Ambassadors’ on the ground over the weekend

at key stops to address questions regarding bus numbers, changes and route connections, this simply doesn’t address the absence of a bus to service Shackleton or Hallwell. The new local feeder L51 and L52 buses are really welcome routes, however they are limited and only once hourly. This too presents a shortcoming for folks needing to connect with the C-Spines. “There is a very palpable sense of frustration from folks that their earlier concerns were totally lost or ignored, amongst the 72,000 submissions as part of the public consultation. “I walked these areas on the first day of the launch of the new service on Sunday and again spoke with residents, passengers, inspectors and drivers on Monday morning

to hear their concerns. The need for the opening of Adamstown Boulevard and a suitable location for a turning circle must be urgently addressed in order to bring a bus service right into Shackleton, voiced loudest amongst concerns. This is a ‘here and now’ issue that needs immediate thinking caps on by South Dublin County Council, Dublin Bus and importantly the developer in question. The lack of sheltered buses stops was also brought to my attention. “Despite a sense of folks wishing to be optimistic and welcome an improvement of services generally, there is a sense of concern for those dependent on a bus service in this part of West Lucan. This comes following the weekend for delivery of the new service with BusConnects Phase

2, seeking to promote and build upon a positive message of efficient userfriendly public transport, and encouraging the move toward greater public transport use. “Lucan Sinn Féin conducted extensive and exhaustive survey work prior to the

recent onset of the Covid19 pandemic this was conducted door to door, moving to a postal survey engagement as soon as restrictions kicked in. The outcome of these findings were clearly illustrated in the report delivered by local activists to the survey area, amounting to

almost 4,000 homes in West Dublin. These included both Dodsborough and the newer larger developments. A full detailed booklet of the Sinn Féin 2020 Lucan Transport Survey can be obtained by contacting dobradaigh@cllrs. sdublincoco.ie.

Deputy Higgins said: “This grant is available from South Dublin County Council to support the elderly or those with a physical, sensory or intellectual disability or mental health difficulty, to make the necessary adaptions to their home to make it more suitable for their needs. “The grant has been extended to include sensory rooms. Sensory rooms can be hugely beneficial and have a really positive impact on both adults and children with a disability.

“Many people who have a disability will be used to accessing sensory rooms in school, hospitals or day-centres and I am very pleased that the Housing adaption grant will support families to create the same

environment at home,” continued Deputy Higgins “The grant is means tested and the maximum grant available is €30,000 with an Occupational Therapist’s report required to outline the need for the proposed

works. “The application and any further information are available on the South Dublin County Council website www.sdcc.ie/en/ services/housing/housinggrants,” concluded Deputy Higgins.

NATIONAL LOTTERY REVEAL LOCAL STORE IN TALLAGHT AS SELLING A €1 MILLION TOP PRIZE Two National Lottery players on opposite sides of the country had plenty of reason to celebrate recently after becoming Ireland’s newest millionaires. Both players won top prize amounts of €1 million in two different draws. One of which was the Daily Million draw with the top prize amount of €1 million being won. A Dublin player scooped the top prize amount after purchasing their winning ticket on the 21st November at the Mace store in Tallaght Business Park in Killinarden.

These rooms are specifically designed to create a relaxing environment by stimulating all five of the senses but also act as a space for combatting over-stimulation which I know can be particularly beneficial to children and adults who have Autism,” explained Emer Higgins T.D.

NOT JUST A PRINCESS NARROWLY MISSES OUT ON €100,000 FUNDING PRIZE FOR ANIMATED TV SERIES

Despite the initial disappointment,Tallaght man Gavin Leonard said he was “proud” to win the Dublin Regional category at the 2021 InterTradeIreland Seedcorn Investor Readiness Competition, netting €20,000 for his project aimed at inspiring the younger generation.

Gavin started Not Just a Princess in 2017 with his wife, Shannon, and has sold over 20,000 books worldwide in the last four years. He created the series to help introduce his young daughter, Jade, to different occupations, cultures, and opportunities – while having a lot of fun along the way. His win in the Dublin Region of the prestigious Seedcorn competition will allow Gavin and his team, which includes industry veteran Richard Keane, to begin to develop a 52-episode animated series that will see Not Just a Princess come to life on screen. The planned television series will focus

on encouraging children, and girls in particular, to look at the STEAM [Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Maths] subjects in a different light.

Gavin said: “We still can’t believe that this incredible project, which started in our living room, has grown into such a huge force. We created Not Just a Princess to help empower young children, including my own daughter, but the whole project has done so much more than that. We have sold thousands of books, raised money for charities that are close to my heart and this €20,000 funding investment will allow us to begin the process of taking these amazing characters off the pages and onto the screen. We want to say a huge thanks to InterTradeIreland & all of the other regional winners and competitors.” The funding investment of €20,000 will be used

Gavin said: “You don’t often see families like us represented on-screen – a mixed family unit, half Asian, half Caucasian, so I am excited to bring that dynamic to the series. In Not Just a Princess we have the King who is a stay-athome dad who encourages his daughter to try lots of things like practising Chinese and learning Kung Fu, there are also extended family members who live at the castle with the family. We hope to expand more on that in the animated series.” Not Just a Princess Creative Director, Richard, added: “We were absolutely delighted to win the ‘Best

SURVEY EXPOSES SHOCKING EXTENT OF COST OF LIVING CRISIS

TD for Dublin Mid West, Mark Ward has demanded that the Government act now to tackle the cost of living crisis. Teachta Ward’s comments came as Sinn Féin published the results of the party’s cost of living, which exposes the major financial pressures workers and families are under due to rising costs. More than 14,000 people took part in the survey. Speaking recently, Teachta Ward said: “The Government must act now to tackle the cost of living crisis. The cost of living is out of control. This is a

real crisis and there needs to be clear action from government now. “More than 14,000 people took part in Sinn Féin’s survey about the cost of living crisis. The results are shocking and expose the stark reality of how urgent this crisis is and the pressure that workers and families are under due to spiralling costs. “People’s incomes are staying the same, while costs are continuing to increase across fuel, rents, childcare, groceries, healthcare and energy bills; to name just a few. “This

is

putting

huge

financial pressure on people, as they struggle to keep on top of their bills every month. The stories are shocking and expose the reality and extent of this crisis here in Dublin Mid West and across the state. “76% of people said they are very concerned about the cost of living. A further 19% said they are quite concerned by it. “77% said that the cost of living crisis has had a negative impact on their mental health.

“98.5% of people said that they believe the government is not doing enough to tackle the cost of living crisis. “Pensioners spoke of being afraid to open their energy bills, as they knew they wouldn’t be able to pay them. Workers spoke of being forced to choose between buying food or filling up a tank of petrol. “Young families spoke of the crippling anxiety of paying childcare fees, which often cost as much as a second mortgage or rent each and every month. One young woman spoke about her desire to start a family and how she fears she simply won’t be able to afford to have a child. “Sinn Féin has led the way in challenging sky-high insurance costs, energy and fuel prices, mortgage costs and rents. But we need action from the government now. “Sinn Féin are publishing proposals to tackle the cost of living crisis. The government must act. “One key step to ease these financial pressures this winter is for the government to remove VAT from domestic energy bills. “Energy prices have risen by 25 percent, while the cost of home heating oil has

soared by a staggering 71 percent. The government increase in Carbon tax is pushing bills up further, putting more families under real pressure. This government is ignoring how much pressure households are under this winter.

“The first step they can take is to remove VAT from domestic energy bills for low and middle income households this winter. “Secondly, the Government must cut rents and then

freeze them. Thirdly, they must scrap carbon tax hikes. “Sinn Féin will stand up for ordinary workers and families in [constituency] to

end this cost of living crisis and ensure they get a break. Sinn Féin has the solutions to deliver this much-needed change.”

The Council are now proposing a series of project works that seek to make Lucan Village a more inviting place to both visit and enjoy for everyone. Entegro’s open roles range from Field-Based personnel, and Design Engineers to Project Managers, Coordinators and Administrators, but the company is particularly interested in onboarding individuals to fill its Field Technician positions throughout Dublin city and surrounding areas. The roles available, which include but are are not limited to; Surveyors, Fibre Cablers, and Splicing Specialists

for both underground and overhead works on several ongoing projects that are located throughout the Dublin area. Desirable candidates will have experience in working with FttH architecture, with the company also hiring for entry-level positions. Competitive salaries for successful candidates as well as a host of benefit packages for employees to choose from. Candidates that are selected will be working as part of the Field Works Team and will be based initially in Dublin reporting to the Project Manager. This particular project will see individuals become responsible for several surveying and build tasks required to enable the provision of Fibre services to residential,

business and MDU customers. The creation of these Field-Based career opportunities is in addition to Entegro’s recently launched Graduate Program initiative, which will see the company working with various third-level Universities and Technical Institutes across Ireland regarding the placement of graduate students entering the t e le c om m u n i c a t i on s industry.

Anita Walsh, Head of People and Talent at Entegro said of the news “We’re very proud of the success Entegro has seen over the past two years. The decision to add these open roles to our recruitment efforts as well as the addition of our Graduate Program, form part of Entegro’s HR Strategy, which is

aligned with our wider Company Strategy. We are invested in developing our talent internally, both to meet the demands of our growing client list and to also effectuate our People Empowerment company values and we are very excited for what is to come for Entegro.” The news of further expansion is a familiar narrative for Entegro as the wholly-Irishowned firm has more than doubled in size in

VIRTUAL CONSULTATION ROOM FOR CASTLETYMON ENHANCEMENT PROJECT OPENS

South Dublin County Council has opened a virtual consultation room for the Castletymon Enhancement Project. The virtual consultation room and public consultation for the scheme will remain open until Tuesday 4th January 2022 and can be found at www.DCEPconsultation. com.

The proposed scheme will involve the upgrading and modernisation of Castletymon Shopping Centre and the surrounding area. This will involve improvements such as wider footways and the creation of a plaza space within and around the shopping centre. The proposed scheme will also provide cycleways and landscaping along the roadway from the new Castletymon Library / Bancroft Park and Tymon Park / National Basketball Arena. South Dublin County Council, in conjunction with the National Transport Authority, are actively trying to develop an improved cycle network throughout the County. This new network is intended to provide more sustainable transport options for

commuters as well as active travel benefits for local communities.

South Dublin County Council’s mission is for cycling to become a credible alternative to a private vehicle. The Council launched an ambitious programme of work earlier in the year known as Cycle South Dublin. Its objectives are to; Provide a comprehensive and connected cycle network across South Dublin County, Increase participation and make cycling a more achievable mode of transport for all adults and children, and Improve the cycling identity of South Dublin County. Speaking on the launch of the consultation, Mick Mulhern, Director of Land Use, Planning and Transportation in South Dublin County Council, said, “Our County villages and centres are really important places for our local communities and the different businesses there. We have over 60 centres across South Dublin, some of which are fantastic and successful places, but others that need more attention to improve them

in a way that encourages people to spend more time in them and to use them as public meeting spaces, which will in turn help to support local businesses. To

this end, the Council agreed a programme of district centre improvement projects in Sept 2020. This

at

Castletymon is the first project to progress to the planning stage and we have now launched a virtual consultation room, which can be accessed at home at

any point up to the 4th of January 2022. We want to hear your thoughts on the scheme and any suggestions you may have to improve on it.”

Over 1,000 students will represent their schools and communities at the virtual exhibition which runs from Wednesday 12th to Friday 14th January 2022. Entries were received from over 2,700 students, with 1,440 brilliant project ideas. The shortlisted entries span 219 schools from 29 counties. Following the success of the first ever virtual BTYSTE in January, which reached more than 77 countries around the world; this year’s finalists will once again compete on a virtual stage to both a national and international audience. This year, new and adapted technologies featured in a fifth (110) of all project entries across the four project categories – Social and Behavioural Science, Technology; Chemical, Physical and Mathematics Science; and Ecological Science. In an everincreasing digital world, students demonstrated their curiosity and imagination for new technologies and how they can assist in our

daily lives, with projects ranging from assisted living devices to apps that help us live more sustainably.

Climate change and the environment were featured in over 150 projects, indicating how our young students have their finger on the pulse of one of the most critical issues dominating our planet today. Students continue to ask questions and investigate the impact, causes and solutions to this global crisis. Other areas with a strong focus in finalist projects this year include health, where students investigate the longer-term impact of Covid on our lives, along with the ways we look after our mental and physical health. Over 140 projects examined either Covid-19 or other health-related issues. Visitors to the virtual exhibition will have the chance to learn about projects covering a range of topics from diversity, sports performance, agriculture and farming, road safety, to the impact of gaming on brain function. They will also be transported into the wonderful world of science and technology, with mind blowing shows, critical conversations,

and an in-depth insight into the future of STEM. Mari Cahalane, Head of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition said, “Following an incredibly challenging 18 months for schools, teachers and wider communities, I am delighted to see the volume and the quality of entries coming through for this year’s exhibition. The ideas are excellent and the ambition is strong, a testament to the dedication and resilience of schools and students across Ireland. “The BTYSTE is a hallmark of the school calendar year and alongside the projects, we will have an exciting lineup of events for everyone including teachers, schools, businesses and wider global and local communities to enjoy.” Minister for Education Norma Foley TD said: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students that entered the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2022. The exhibition continues to provide a real opportunity to our young people to engage in so many diverse aspects of science and technology. I look forward to learning more about the findings and exciting creative

PRODUCERS SECURE LISTINGS WITH SPECIALTY RETAILER MORTON’S Following on from an online ‘Meet the Buyer Event’, where 15 Dublin producers met with Claire Morton, from the iconic specialty retailer based in Ranelagh and Hatch Street, six Dublin producers have secured a listing. The event was organised by Dublin Food Chain which is the largest food network in Europe and facilitates commercial activity between Dublin’s growing food producer community and it’s food service and retail operators. The Dublin Food Chain is an initiative of the Local Enterprise Offices in the Dublin area and supported by Bord Bia. The Dublin Food Chain is part of an ongoing effort to harness the power of the ‘collective’, in order to ensure that Co. Dublin’s unique food heritage benefits from the attention it deserves. Retailer Claire Morton commented on the

initiative “The focus here in Morton’s is on bringing the best local food to customers and we were delighted with the opportunity to collaborate with the Dublin Food Chain, which has resulted in six new food producers’ products being available to our customers.” Asian sauce producer Mindi Keane from Mama Nagis, and Tea Blender, Nicola Kearns from Niks Tea, both based in South Dublin were delighted to receive news of the listing. Tom Rooney, Head of Enterprise, Local Enterprise Office, South Dublin described the initiative as representative of the ethos of Dublin Food Chain “Food is an important priority for the four Local Enterprise Offices in the Dublin area and we are delighted to support the Dublin Food Chain in initiatives like this, which result in commercial outputs for its members.”

solutions that have been uncovered in our students’ work. Supporting the exhibition as a key partner is an important part of the Department’s strategy for STEM education. “Also, in recognition of the Department’s priority to contribute to the achievement of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) I am delighted to provide, for the first time, a special award for the best Education for Sustainable Development project at the BTYSTE

exhibition. I would like to also extend my thanks to BT Ireland and all those involved in the exhibition for the huge effort that is put in each year to organise this event.” The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition will be delivered across a virtual platform from January 12th – 14th 2022. The finalists will be interviewed by an eminent panel of over 90 judges. This national celebration of science and technology is one of the

country’s best attended events every year. For participants, the Exhibition offers a chance to win one of the most coveted awards with a substantial prize fund and the BTYSTE perpetual trophy, as well as over 200 prizes for individuals, groups, and teachers. YMCA DUBLIN CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY

Young people from YMCA Dublin celebrated International Volunteers Day on 5th December as they give thanks to all the YMCA Volunteers who

support them. International Volunteers Day is mandated by the UN General Assembly to encourage and foster volunteerism worldwide for the social and

economic development of communities.

As a registered charity and social enterprise, YMCA Dublin relies on the support

of volunteers and funders to provide instrumental services to the community such as Child Care, the after school Homework Club and the PlusOne mentoring programme, which provides a support network to young people aged 10-17 years old from inner-city Dublin who are in need of guidance and support. Kathryn O’Mahony, CEO of YMCA Dublin said “On behalf of the children, youths and everyone here at YMCA, we’d like to thank all of our volunteers that contribute to our centres and youth programmes. Without their dedication and efforts, we would not be able to provide the safe space and support that we give to the young people in our community. They are truly making a positive impact on these young lives.”

ALMOST 140,000 NITROUS OXIDE CANISTERS SEIZED TO DATE THIS YEAR The latest seizure of 59,000 nitrous oxide canisters worth €1.9m brings the total amount of cannisters seized this year to almost 140,000, a local TD has said. Deputy Emer Higgins said, “I was recently informed by PQ that over 80,000 nitrous oxide canisters had been seized this year up until September. This week’s latest seizure has almost doubled that figure. “This mammoth seizure is yet more evidence of the growing issue with nitrous oxide misuse that we have in Ireland. “Inhaling nitrous oxide, or laughing gas as it’s known, is not just a bit of fun. It has been linked to a number of deaths in the UK and we’re seeing increased hospitalisation rates in Ireland. “Easy access is a huge issue. It’s far too straightforward for anyone of any age with access to the internet to pop online and order nitrous oxide to their home in a couple of clicks. “I welcomed Amazon’s decision earlier this year to stop advertising nitrous oxide and I have called on Google to do the same. “In my view, it’s unacceptable that any company should profiteer from this growing problem by selling ads for nitrous oxide gas canisters. I recently wrote to Google to ask them to take action urgently. “Education and awareness are also factors and I think we must inform young people of the associated dangers of nitrous oxide. People who inhale the gas can experience dizziness, disorientation, impaired memory, as well as incidents tripping and falling. “I commend the Gardaí and Revenue officers on this seizure and for continuing to take nitrous oxide misuse very seriously,” concluded Deputy Higgins.

MOTORING LIFE

NEW FORD KUGA DIESEL RAISES THE BAR

By Breda Corrigan The original Ford Kuga SUV graced our shores in 2008 and went on to become a great sales success for the blue oval brand. Although it was regarded as being little more than a high-driving Ford Focus at the time, owners loved the way the Kuga served up hatchback-style handling, while benefiting from the extra space and practicality of the larger five-door family SUV. To help the Kuga stay fresh in the face of increasing competition from the likes of the Peugeot 3008, Renault Kadjar and Kia Sportage, Ford launched the secondgeneration Kuga in 2013 with a new design language, cleaner and more efficient engines, and improved infotainment technology. Highly-Acclaimed Platform. However, for the all-new third-generation Kuga, Ford has concentrated its attention in all the key areas, providing the Kuga with eye-catching good looks, excellent levels of standard equipment, an efficient range of engines, and solid safety credentials. In fact, the all-new Kuga has been awarded the highest-possible 5-star safety rating by the Euro NCAP independent crash test authority, scoring 92 per cent for adult protection and receiving full points in both the side barrier and the more severe side pole impact tests. The Kuga’s structure utilises high-strength steel throughout the skeleton and intelligent designs to improve impact protection, including

ultra-high-strength 3D-rolled steel tubes incorporated into each A-pillar and along the rooflines. The all-new Kuga is based on Ford’s highly-acclaimed C2 platform, so it shares its underpinnings with the latest Focus hatchback – leading to sharp driving dynamics and excellent body control through corners. Trim Variants. The new Ford Kuga Diesel is available in a choice of four variants – Titanium, ST-Line, ST-Line X and Vignale – with power supplied by a 1.5-litre EcoBlue Turbo-Diesel engine. For buyers looking for alternative engine options, the new Kuga is also available in plug-in hybrid (PHEV), mild hybrid and full hybrid versions. Test Car. My test car was a Kuga ST-Line X 1.5 EcoBlue Diesel 6 Speed Manual FWD, which attracts annual road tax of just €200. Standard features include 18” Rock metallic alloy wheels, full LED headlamps, front LED fog lights with front cornering, black roof rails, large rear spoiler, red brake calipers, auto high/low beam headlamp control, partial premium-touch Sensico sports seats with red stitching, B&O premium sound system, driver impairment monitor, alloy foot pedals, ST-Line front & rear floor mats and front scuff plates, along with an ST-Line full body kit comprising of unique front & rear fascia and bumper design, rear painted

diffuser, front painted skid plate and a dark mesh upper grille. Producing 118bhp (120PS) and 270Nm of torque, the refined 4-cylinder turbo-diesel Kuga can sprint from 0-100km/h in 12.7-seconds and can reach a top speed of 173km/h (where permitted). The Kuga’s slick manual transmission is a joy to use, and it feels well weighted at all times. With a delightful balance of comfort and handling, and the finest driving dynamics in its class, the new Kuga Diesel provides a grown-up driving experience on every journey, while a strong brake pedal feel ensures driver confidence behind the leather-clad, multi-function steering wheel. Rewarding Occupant Experience. Comfort, spaciousness, flexibility and connectivity are key to the more rewarding Kuga occupant experience. The new Kuga is 44mm wider and 89mm longer than the previous model, while the wheelbase has increased by 20mm. Inside the cabin, that translates to increases in shoulder room, hip room and headroom for front and rear seat passengers, despite an overall height that is 6mm lower than before. For rear seat passengers, heated outer seats are available for the first time, and the entire second row of seats can be moved backwards for best-in-class rear legroom (1,035mm) or forwards to increase boot space to best-in-class 645-litres. A remote release function enables the second row to be folded flat with ease. The boot also

has a reversable luggage compartment mat with a high-quality velour on one side for a premium look and feel, and a durable and robust rubber surface on the other side to prevent wet or muddy items from soiling the interior. FordPass Connect. For the first time, the new Kuga is offered with FordPass Connect modem technology that allows customers to remotely control a selection of vehicle features from any location with a mobile data signal. In addition to helping drivers plan faster, less stressful journeys with Live Traffic updates for the navigation system, FordPass Connect allows a range of features to be accessed for a more convenient ownership experience via the FordPass mobile app. Verdict & Pricing. By injecting some of the original Kuga’s dynamic appeal into the new Kuga, it is safe to say that Ford’s latest mid-size SUV is on target to reclaim its crown as one of the best SUV’s on the market. If you are looking for a practical family SUV that combines driving thrills with excellent fuel efficiency and brisk performance, then the new Ford Kuga Diesel is certainly worthy of serious consideration. The all-new Ford Kuga (Titanium model) is priced from €33,358 (ex-works), with the Kuga ST-Line X Diesel priced from €38,320 (ex-works).

FIRHOUSE TRANSITION YEAR STUDENTS RAISING FUNDS FOR PIETA HOUSE A Special Education Teacher and a group of Transition Year students from Firhouse Community College took on the task of first building a garden shed from scratch. It was a student led project where all measuring, cutting, hammering, and painting was completed almost entirely by the students. With great enthusiasm and hard work, the students have completed the building phase of the project. The shed will be raffield off with proceeds going to Pieta House.

The students chose Pieta House as the charity to get the proceeds from the raffling of the garden shed. The raffle was launched on the 3rd of December in Firhouse Community College. The project helps promote this very worthy cause and highlight the wonderful work of Pieta House. LOCAL TD CRITICISES DELAYS TO ROWLAGH PRIMARY CARE CENTRE People Before Profit TD for Dublin MidWest Gino Kenny has strongly criticised the continuing delays to the much needed primary care centre in Rowlagh, North Clondalkin. He made the statement following correspondence with the HSE which stated that the delay is caused by an issue with the transfer of land at Collinstown Community College from the Department of Education. Planning permission, fire certificates and disability access certificates have all been approved for the facility. The HSE stated in their reply that they had agreed to carry out works to the school in return for the site. The TD has also contacted the Department

of Education to clarify the reason for the delay and to urge both parties to urgently resolve any outstanding issues. Gino Kenny TD commented: “It is very disappointing to find yet another stumbling block when it comes to this much needed facility. People in the area have been waiting a long time and it seems that there is no timeframe for when the facility will be constructed. If commitments were given by the HSE in relation to works to the school then those commitments should be honoured so that the site can be transferred. “I have also written to the Minister of Education Norma Foley to request a report on where the discussions are currently at, and to provide a timeframe for the delivery of the centre.”
