PLAYING SMOKE AND MIRRORS WITH MENTAL HEALTH Mark Ward TD and Sinn Féin spokesperson for mental health has accused the Government of using smoke and mirrors with mental health funding in the recent 2022 Budget announcement.

Of the €37 million announced by Mary Butler in additional funding for mental health, only €24 million represents real additional funding in comparison to the additional €113 million that Sinn Féin proposed to spend. Ward, the Dublin Mid West TD said: “The Government has

only provided €24m additional for mental health, a decrease from €50 million last year. “This is woefully inadequate and shows that they are out of touch with reality and the mental health challenges ordinary people are facing.

“Sinn Féin proposed €113m for urgently needed investment in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Primary Mental Health Care Services, expanding counselling to universal coverage, and investing in dual diagnosis supports. “In

the

budget

the Government announced €37 million in additional funding for mental health. €24 million of this is for new development funding for mental health.

Teachta Ward welcomed the funding allocation but expressed that it will not stretch far enough, he said “This is welcome but does not go nearly far enough. “€13 million is for existing levels of service. This is funding that was already pre-committed and does not represent actual real additional funding. More smoke and mirrors tactics

by the Government. “The Government are banging their drum that €1.1 billion is allocated for mental health this year. To put that in context this is almost the exact same amount of funding that was allocated in 2008.

Mark Ward TD, the spokesperson in his party for mental health added “This budget means that only 5.1% of the health budget is for mental health, when Sláintecare recommends 10% of the health budget should go to mental health services while international best practice recommends up to 16%.

The Local Dublin Mid West TD concluded “The State is in the grips of a mental health crisis. This crisis demands an emergency response and substantial, ongoing funding commitments. “This failed opportunity to significantly increase funding for mental health services shows yet again the lack of understanding by the Government of the inadequacy of our current services or the extent of the growing demands for mental health services.

RATHCOOLE WOODLANDS SURVEY CONFIRMS RARE EU PROTECTED HABITATS An ecological survey of the Rathcoole Woodlands area has confirmed the presence of rare habitats listed under EU environmental protective legislation, the Habitats Directive.

The survey was commissioned by the Four Districts Woodlands Habitat Group who are campaigning to save the woodlands from a Council plan to develop the area. The Council’s original master plan from 2019 was to build 250 houses, a school, GAA pitches, and a library on the woodlands

and adjacent area to the south of Rathcoole Park.

The group believes the survey supports their call for the woodlands to be given full protection as a natural amenity for wildlife and the community. The survey found that the rare EU protected habitat, Alluvial (Wet) Woodlands, covers an area of nearly 13 hectares. It identified a rich mosaic of natural habitats that included two other rare habitats, Lowland hay meadow and Petrifying springs. In the

report Dr Rory Hodd, an independent botanist, says “taken as a whole, this site is of very high ecological and biodiversity value and it is imperative that it is protected and managed correctly into the future, as a key local biodiversity area, of great benefit to both local wildlife and to the local community.”

Since reports of the rare habitats emerged the Council has put their draft plan on hold, but the group are concerned that the Council is still determined to find a way to push through with some part of the Master Plan. They believe that such sensitive ecological areas can’t be chipped away at to try and squeeze in parts of the master plan.

Deirdre Tierney from the group said “It’s important that these lands are given the protection they need. You cannot start removing

parts of what is a continuous and whole ecological system as this will detrimentally affect the other parts. The report says that all of the habitats covered by the Council’s plan are essential in retaining the integrity and functioning of the Annex I habitats”. The Group acknowledges

the awareness and support of the wider 4 Districts Community and South Dublin County Councillors for the Woodlands Habitats many of whom have visited the Woodlands. This support was very obvious recently with the very large number of related Habitat preservation

submissions to the SDCC Draft Development Plan 2022-2028 consultation. The Habitats need to be protected as required by the EU Habitat Directive legislation and we are confident that this can happen with a combination of Community, Councillor and Council commitment.

TRAFFIC CALMING MEASURES REQUIRED AT ST BERNADETTE’S SCHOOL TD for Dublin Mid-West, Mark Ward has called on

South Dublin County Council to place traffic calming

measures in the vicinity of St Bernadette’s School in Quarryvale. Residents have contacted Deputy Ward with concerns after at least two accidents and several near misses were reported at the school. Teachta Ward said “I have called on South Dublin County Council to urgently place traffic calming measures on the roads leading to St Bernadette’s National School in Quarryvale. “There is no traffic calming measures from the Cold Cut Road roundabout to the school. There is a long stretch of road on Greenfort Crescent and Greenfort Avenue that have no traffic calming measures. Several residents have already submitted forms to the Council as requested last year. “There have been a number near misses and two accidents that I am aware of recently. Also, the criteria for suitable ramps locations are from curb to curb and near public lighting. There is a location on Greenfort Avenue suitable, but the

public lighting is obstructed by a tree . “I have asked

that the Council look at traffic calming measures

leading to this busy school as a matter of urgency”.

LOCAL COUNCILLOR COMMENTS ON RECENT COUNCIL MEETING Local Councillor Alan Edge commented on two topics at the October meeting of South Dublin County Council.

In regards the Pearse Bros Part 8, the Firhouse - Bohernabreena representative voted against the Part 8 for age friendly accommodation in Pearse Bros Park because of concerns expressed recently by the Planning Regulator that this policy has the potential to ‘prejudice’, ‘dilute’ or ‘undermine’ our aim to preserve and protect open space and recreational amenity. Cllr Edge said “This issue is an important one for councillors, no matter which area we happen to represent. The observation of the regulator, which is not binding in this case, nevertheless casts doubt on our policy and led me to call on councillors to consider whether we should follow through on a policy when we are told we may need either a change policy on older person’s accommodation or to abandon the objective to provide for open space and

recreational amenity for people. I can’t and won’t support removing the objective to provide and protect open space. To take green space from a community should be a measure of last resort and not standard practice. I remarked that it’s unfortunate for residents of St Aongus that the observation wasn’t available last month and that the deferral sought wasn’t granted.” In relation to the Arts Strategy, Cllr Edge commented on the amazing work done by the Council’s Arts Team and also by Tallaght Community Arts during the pandemic, in particular as regards reaching out to communities and young people who might otherwise be overlooked. He also welcome the commitment of the Council’s Director of Planning to ‘a coherent aesthetic between the new development of Chamber Square and this piece of Public Realm improvement between the Luas and Rua Red’.

QUINTAIN TO INVEST €500M TO CREATE THE HEART OF ADAMSTOWN

Quintain has commenced construction of the first phase of its new €500m urban village development in Adamstown. The first phase includes 279 apartments and over 91,000 sq ft/8,500sqm of space to house two major supermarkets, 20 retail units and five restaurant outlets, along with a multi storey car park. The development, which will be called The Crossings, will greatly enhance the range of amenities available to current and future residents of Adamstown. With 3,000 homes already completed in Adamstown, and over 5,000 new homes expected over the next five years, this development delivers a focal point for the community to live, work and play. Tesco has signed a lease for a 40,000 sq ft/3,700sqm store, which is set to open in January 2023, with a second leading supermarket anchor store set to open at the same time. Bannon have been retained as agents for the leasing of the retail units, which will serve an estimated potential shopping population of over 100,000 people drawn from residents in Adamstown, and the neighbouring suburbs of Lucan, Celbridge and Leixlip. Construction has commenced on the 279-unit apartment complex adjacent to the retail facilities, which will be completed by mid-2023. Planning permission for a second phase of 185 apartments has been granted and further phases are planned for submission in late 2021 and early 2022. A 2-acre village green will provide a centre piece for the area as place to unwind and dine, with areas designed to bring people together at community event, artisan markets and family fun days. This phase of development marks the latest stage of progress in Quintain’s plans to create a vibrant community in Adamstown, where to date Quintain and its affiliates have built 1,000 homes, with over 85% occupied by first time buyers. In addition to the apartments at The Crossings, Quintain has a further 800 homes under construction or due to commence this year.

Adamstown has benefited from significant infrastructural investment in recent years including a strategic road network and public amenities. In June, Quintain completed and transferred ownership to South Dublin County Council of Tandy’s Lane Park, providing local residents with easy access to green open space. Another 27-acre green open space - Airlie Park is set to open by the end of the year and will include a cricket pitch and Astroturf pitches. Michael Hynes, Joint Managing Partner, Quintain Ireland, said:“We look forward to welcoming Tesco as one of the anchor tenants at The Crossings, which will bring new homes and retail development just a minute’s walk from Adamstown station. This investment will contribute to the social fabric of the area, and is supported by the handover of Tandy’s Lane Park to South Dublin County Council. We are very confident in the strong level of demand there is to live in the area, which will be boosted by the new amenities we are delivering.” Eddie Byrne, Joint Managing Partner, Quintain Ireland, said: “We are investing half a billion euros in the very heart of Adamstown over the next 5 years. With this first phase we will deliver a major boost to local residents where they can shop and socialise just minutes from their front door. It will provide Adamstown with a beating heart for social activity, and a focal point for community engagement. With this progress, and the wider development of more homes, schools and green open spaces for Adamstown, the area will become one of the most desirables destinations in west Dublin.

WE SEE YOU DADS MATTER TOO Collaboration between Archways, Blue Skies Initiative & From Lads to Dads, supported by The Síol Foundation and The Community Foundation for Ireland, created a practical but highly effective

initiative to give a clear message to these Dads We See You! You Matter Too! A carefully developed pack was created with information about free parental support programs offered by Blue Skies

Initiative and other Area Based Childhood programs.

In addition, programs run specifically for dads at all stages of their parenting journey by From Lads to Dads. These packs also

contain two beautiful books, “When You Were Born” and “Before you Sleep” by Benji Bennet (Adam’s Cloud series) an Irish dad who lost his son, and these books are a tribute to him. Reading books with their children offers dads an opportunity to develop a beautiful bond and express their love.

out on the milestones of pregnancy, unable to support the mother of their child through labour, waiting for a phone call to be told to come into the hospital your child is about to be born, only to be ushered back out just after the birth. These restrictions tell Dads that they do not matter.

As these Dads and soon to be Dads are waiting in car parks and outside the maternity hospitals, the pack also contains pens, water, and snacks to pass the time. They can also use the opportunity to chat about their worries with the From Lads to Dad, Archways and Blue Skies Initiative distributors.

This campaign, in conjunction with Blueskies Initiative, is crucial. We need to tell Dads they matter, and their role as a parent is essential. We see you; we are here to support you, to listen to your stories, and to give you a voice. You are not a visitor or a guest - you are a Dad, a partner, and a role model for the next generation, #dadsmattertoo

Christina Riordan, Project Coordinator, Blue Skies Initiative, said, “Too often dads are simply not thought of when it comes to the antenatal and postnatal period. We do not provide a space for them to feel included and empowered. This was even more clear during the last 18 months.

Sixty-five of these packs have already been distributed to Dads outside the Rotunda Hospital and the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital. The response was overwhelming; many Dads and Dads-to-be were surprised to realize that they were being recognized in this way. Thanks to The Síol Foundation, The Community Foundation for Ireland, Archways, Blue Skies Initiative, and From Lads to Dads, over 200 more packs are being prepared and distributed to Dads and Dads-to-be outside Holles Street, The Coombe, and Rotunda Maternity hospitals over the coming weeks. Dads: We see you! You matter too!

We have labelled them as “visitors” and “companions” but have ignored that their most important title is “Father”. The sole purpose of this project is to make fathers feel seen and acknowledged. They matter! They matter to their partner, and most importantly, they matter to their child.” Dave Saunders, CEO of From Lads to Dads, also commented: From Lads to Dads are privileged to work with many Dads supporting them through pregnancy and the perinatal period. However, we are learning that, due to Covid 19 restrictions within the maternity hospitals, fathers have felt excluded, unseen, and “in the way”. At From Lads to Dads, we are working hard to change that narrative and support dads, helping them feel included by emphasizing the importance of their role. We hear first-hand the many heart-breaking stories from dads - the detrimental effect these restrictions have on them as parents and partners. They are excluded from hospital appointments, missing

COUNCILLOR WELCOMES CONFIRMATION OF NEW MODELS AND LIGHTING WORKSHOP WITH PALMERSTOWN PUBLIC PATH LIGHTING AT CASTLEGATE Councillor for LucanPalmerstown-North Clondalkin, Derren Ó Bradaigh, has expressed his delight for residents of Castlegate and Adamstown in welcoming the recent confirmation that he received for a section of new public lighting. Cllr Ó Brádaigh said; “I

am very happy indeed to have had such a positive response from South Dublin County Council public realm recently confirming a new public lighting scheme for the 100 metre pedestrian path connection between Castegate Crescent and the main Newcastle Road. This follows an earlier representation that I

submitted on behalf Adamstown residents.

of

“This section of important path leading to the main road bus stop has remained void of any lighting whatsoever since the construction of Castlegate/Adamstown for long over a decade and is in complete darkness after nightfall. Resident’s report feeling nervous walking this important route with some people stating that they no longer take the route, opting instead to walk the longer and safer main road via Castlegate Way. “The announcement has confirmed that this new scheme will be commissioned by early 2022 and I will be paying particularly close attention to ensure that it does in fact arrive as promised. The residents of Adamstown have knitted together over recent years with some fantastic efforts and initiatives to take ownership of this growing and diverse

community through the setting up of Neighbourhood Watch and community clean up groups all playing their part. “The installation of new lighting along this pathway will also help to eliminate any loitering or antisocial behaviour from occurring at this location, thereby making it safer for commuters using the nearby main road bus stop. I commend the Gardaí for their notable presence on the ground recently, despite a lack of adequate resources and I would also like to also take this opportunity to commend the Council and their work crews for all of their ongoing improvement and maintenance works in Lucan, Clondalkin and Palmerstown and throughout the county.”

100 DUBLIN SCHOOLS AWARDED GREEN FLAG Local schools were awarded the Green Flag recently for their dedication to sustainability and protecting their environment. Despite two school years with closures and challenges posed by COVID-19, 526 schools across Ireland were awarded Green Flags. Green-Schools is an environmental management programme for schools which focuses on themes including Litter and Waste; Energy; Water; Travel; Biodiversity; Global Citizenship and Marine Environment.

Speaking at each ceremony, Green-Schools Manager Cathy Baxter congratulated the 526 schools receiving their Green Flag: “We know that you have all been working incredibly hard in your schools over the last year and you continued to find innovative ways to keep the programme going during school closures and social distancing. You managed to have outdoor Committee meetings, online workshops and attending online webinars to keep up to date, so thank you.”

Schools were invited to six online award ceremonies which took place recently with the final ceremony for the Water theme which took place on October 14th. At the ceremonies schools enjoyed activities like Sea Shanties and online quizzes, with messages of support played from “Captain Climate”, actor Nicola Coughlan, champion cyclist Lara Gillespie and local authority Environmental Awareness Officers, who support schools during their participation in GreenSchools.

Local schools in Tallaght, Lucan and Clondalkin received their award and they are Martin De Porres N.S, Firhouse Educate Together, Scoil Mhuire G.N.S, Thomas S.N.S, The King’s Hospital, Edmondstown N.S, Glenasmole N.S, Colaiste Bride, Solas Chríost, Scoil Cnoc Mhuire Shoisir, Adamstown Community College, Gaelscoil na Giúise, Kishoge Community College, Scoil Aonghusa Snr and St Kevin’s Boys’ School.

Registration for the Competition, which runs from November until April, can now be made online at www.fyffesfitsquad.ie, with the overall winner to be announced in May. Building on its campaign to promote fitness and healthy eating amongst young people,

the proven Fyffes Fit Squad programme has been introduced to 20,000 plus pupils in a countrywide series of live school visits since its launch just three years ago. Last year, Fit Squad went online when schools were forced to close. With hundreds now awaiting visits, Fyffes says it is looking forward to resuming live sessions in schools ‘when conditions permit’.

NEW COMPUTER SCIENCE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR SECOND LEVEL STUDENTS Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) has launched a new virtual learning environment designed to provide second-level students from socio-economically disadvantaged areas equal access to Computer Science education.

Computing lecturers and students based on the University’s Tallaght Campus developed Computer Science Inclusive Learning Environment (CSLINC) with academic and industry collaborators in Microsoft, CodeClub Ireland, Maynooth University, ESERO European Space Education Research Office (ESERO), UCD ML Labs and Huawei. Following on from the University’s hugely successful mobile Computer Science camp programme for primary and secondary schools, CSINC, Dr Barry Feeney, Head of the Department of Computing at TU Dublin, reveals the

impetus to develop CSLINC. “As part of the Leaving Certificate Computer Science (LCCS) framework, the Department of Education and Skills identified that building of capacity for Computer Science amongst teachers and students was a significant barrier to the future success of the subject. Using a suite of free targeted supports, CSLINC is building student and teacher capacity for progression into LCCS and for Youth Reach into PLC.” The CSLINC project provides second-level schools with formal Computer Science curricula in an effort to widen the participation in the pursuit of Computer Science at Leaving Certificate Level for students from areas of educational disadvantage. The online learning environment consists of modules designed using international best practices and tailored to the needs of second-level students

in Ireland. Dr Keith Quille, a lecturer in Computing at TU Dublin, explains that the platform was developed using Universal Design principles.

“CSLINC is free to use and mobile-friendly, so schools don’t need a fully equipped computer lab to use the platform. Each module consists of lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, videos, homework and solutions for teachers, providing a full suite of online tools to deliver successful introductory Transition Year, Junior Cycle and Youth Reach Computer Science courses. There is also an automated assessment where students take a pre-created quiz that is graded automatically, and successful students will receive a certificate of completion from TU Dublin for each module they pass.” Continuing, Dr Quille said, “From March to June of 2021, TU Dublin conducted

a pilot of three modules with 50 schools and 3000 students participating. The feedback was hugely positive, and uptake for

the first full year of the programme exceeded expectations, with 9,100 students registered for modules and 230 teachers

teaching our content in 101 schools across the country. In addition, 22% of the schools signed up so far are DEIS schools”.

Gaelscoil Lir is a multidenominational, democratically run Irish medium primary school that opened for the first time this September. The school is currently accepting enrolments for 2022 and is open to all pupils, regardless of their ability, religion or home language. Gaelscoil Lir will also open a special class for children with autism in the coming weeks and is now accepting applications from families in Citywest, Saggart, Newcastle and beyond. The co-educational primary school, which is under the Patronage of An Foras Pátrúnachta, is located on the same campus as Coláiste Pobail Fóla, facing the Saggart LUAS stop on Fortunestown Lane.

Planning permission for a state-of-the-art building, which will permanently house Gaelscoil Lir has been granted and will soon go to tender. Príomhoide, Sinéad Bheilbigh said; “We are off to a great start at Gaelscoil Lir and I feel very lucky to

work with such a dedicated and talented staff. Our wonderful pupils bring joy to our school each day. I look forward to welcoming our new pupils in the weeks, months and years ahead.” For more information, visit www.gslir.ie.

SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL OPEN DODDER GREENWAY BRIDGES

Pic Credit: Ben Ryan The Minister for Transport and the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, joined the Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr Peter Kavanagh, Anne Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport Authority, Dave Hennessy Assistant Director Southern Regional Assembly and South Dublin County Council Chief Executive Daniel McLoughlin, to open the Dodder Greenway Bridge. The Dodder Greenway, being developed to be a Greenway of International renown, is expected to be on par with the best greenways in the world. Once complete, it is envisaged to be over 17km long, linking Sir Rogerson’s Quay in the City Centre to the entrance of the Bohernabreena Reservoirs at Glenasmole, South Dublin. Although developed as a combination of off-road and onroad, it utilises existing facilities with the Dodder Valley as much as possible to connect the linear parklands along the route. As part of the bridges phase of the

Dodder Greenway initiative, South Dublin County Council has built three new pedestrian and cycle bridges, 750m of new pathway and 2.6km of upgraded paths. This phase of the project cost approximately €5.8M and is being delivered by South Dublin County Council with funding provided by the National Transport Authority (€4.3M) and the European Regional Development Fund’s S&E Regional Programme (€1.5M). The opening of the bridges is a key milestone in the overall Dodder Greenway vision to link Dublin City Centre to the Dublin Mountains via Ballsbridge, Milltown, Rathfarnham, Firhouse and Tallaght. The South Dublin County section of the Greenway stretches from the Bohernabreena Reservoir in Tallaght to Orwell Park in Rathfarnham. The Dodder Greenway represents a major new transport and recreational facility for Dublin, catering for both commuter and social cyclists. The route takes specific account of the rich ecology of the area and is a combination of off-road and on-road cycleways utilising existing facilities within

the Dodder Valley as much as possible and connecting the linear parkland along the route. Mick Mulhern Director of Services for LUPT has said about the Dodder Greenway ‘The Dodder Greenway is a fantastic new walking and cycling route for South Dublin. We have already seen a huge increase in the numbers of people using it for leisure, recreation and commuting and we have even small café businesses opening up along it. Once the whole route is completed it will be great for the whole of Dublin. The Dodder Greenway is a major part of South Dublin County Council’s Cycle South Dublin strategy. Approved by the Council’s elected members in April 2021, the ambitious Cycle South Dublin programme of work seeks to progress works on 260km of new and improved cycle lanes across the County. Cycle South Dublin reflects the increasing importance of making cycling a realistic and integral part of how people move around the County and includes 63 projects. Speaking at the launch, Minister

for Transport Eamon Ryan TD said: “We celebrate the opening of the Dodder Bridges because they are vital pieces of a planned network of safe infrastructure. The Cycle South Dublin strategy is one of the most ambitious programmes for cycling in the country and will deliver a 260km network of cycle lanes connecting homes with the places people need to go on a daily basis. By improving and expanding these facilities, we can ensure our cities, towns and villages are more connected and accessible while making sustainable travel a real alternative to private car use. That’s why we are investing €360 million per annum over the ten years to 2030, with a view to providing active and safe ways of travelling right across the country.” Anne Graham, Chief Executive Officer, National Transport Authority, said, “NTA is delighted to have co-funded this phase of work on the Dodder Greenway. We worked closely with South Dublin County Council to deliver this scheme, which will make walking and cycling safer and more

attractive for more people in this part of Dublin and beyond. “The Dodder Greenway is precisely the kind of projects that we need to focus on as part of the effort to tackle climate change and provide an alternative to the private car.” Dave Hennessy Assistant Director Southern Regional Assembly said ‘’ “Congratulations to South Dublin County Council on the successful delivery of the Dodder Valley Bridges and how they used EU funding from the ERDF S&E Regional Programme. Projects such as this are a great example of how our EU membership directly benefits our regions and local communities.” Cllr Peter Kavanagh, Mayor of South Dublin County, said, “The Dodder Greenway is a fantastic piece of infrastructure that is going to link the Southern half of South Dublin all the way to Sir John Rogerson’s Quay when completed. It represents the future for many thousands of commuters here in South Dublin as we try and create a motile shift away from the private car leading to increased quality of life, better air quality and safer streets for everyone”

FITZGERALD RE-ELECTED VICE-PRESIDENT OF EPP GROUP Frances Fitzgerald, Fine Gael MEP for Dublin, has recently been re-elected as Vice-President of the EPP Group by a majority vote. Speaking after the vote in the European Parliament, MEP Fitzgerald said, “I am honoured to have been re-elected as Vice-President of the EPP Group in the European Parliament as we are approaching the halfway point of this parliamentary mandate. “As Ireland continues to face the challenges of COVID-19 and increasing Brexit tensions, it is important that we have representation at key leadership levels in Europe. “I welcome the opportunity to shape the future of the EU as we work towards a COVID recovery which is all about building a better, green, digital and inclusive future. “Fine Gael is the party of Europe in Ireland; we were one of the founding members of the EPP in 1976. I want to build on this strong pro-European track record and strengthen links between Ireland and Europe particularly given the ongoing Brexit tensions surrounding the Northern Ireland Protocol. “As we move through this defining moment for Europe, we must continue to strongly uphold values of respect for rule of law, respect for human dignity, freedom of the press, pro-business and free trade. My entire political life has reflected these values. “I will continue to be a strong voice for my constituency of Dublin and for Ireland at this crucial time,” MEP Fitzgerald concluded.

NEW LOCAL AREA REPRESENTATIVE FOR CLONDALKIN On Saturday the 9th October People Before Profit launched their new local area rep Darragh Adelaide at the Bawnogue Shopping Centre. Darragh, a native of Clondalkin, was joined by Gino Kenny TD, Cllr Madeleine Johansson and family and friends at the small outdoor event. Darragh was selected by the People Before Profit branch to represent the party in the Clondalkin area at the next local election. He is currently studying at DCU and wants to be a voice for workers and students in the area. Darragh wants to fight for: An end to the housing crisis by building public housing on public land, rent controls, and banning vulture funds. Free and frequent public transport to cut down on traffic and carbon emissions. Better funding and easier access to mental health services. Increased college and apprenticeship places and abolishing fees. And making the minimum wage a living wage. Darragh commented: “I am honoured to have

been selected to represent the Clondalkin area for People Before Profit. For years I have watched our community be neglected by consecutive Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael Governments. I have seen the crippling effects of austerity and cuts on my community. We have lost funding for mental health services, seen skyrocketing rents and house prices, and have

watched as hospital waiting lists have gotten longer and longer. We deserve better.” “As a socialist, I believe that real change has to come from regular people standing up for their communities. Over the last decade, we have seen fundamental changes in Irish society come from mass movements and people power, from scrapping water charges, to marriage

equality, to repealing the 8th.” Gino Kenny TD added: “I’m delighted to have Darragh Adelaide working alongside myself, Cllr Madeleine Johansson and People Before Profit members in Clondalkin. Darragh is a committed activist and socialist who will stand up for ordinary people in the community.”

JOIN TUHF IN A ‘RACE AROUND THE WORLD’ THIS NOVEMBER Tallaght University Hospital Foundation (TUHF) is turning their annual Cycle into a virtual event this November. With frontline staff still working to try and keep Covid-19 at bay, for safety reasons, they have opted to take a virtual approach.

This year’s cycle will be a virtual race between four teams led by four sporting heroes, with people being encouraged to sign up online to their favourite team! People can join the Rugby Team, led by Linda Djougang, Ireland International rugby player and Tallaght Nurse; the Gaelic Football Team, led by multiple All-Ireland winner James McCarthy; the Hurling Team, led by Leitrim and Thomas Davis hurling hero Zak Moradi; and the Football Team, led by Shamrock Rovers’ star Neil Farrugia Speaking at the launch, Douglas Collins CEO said,

“We are so grateful to our ambassadors and delighted to continue with our annual cycle for Tallaght University Hospital, albeit virtually. With a target of €30K, all funds raised from this year’s Virtual Cycle will go towards building a new sensory room, to improve the experience for patients attending Tallaght University Hospital’s Emergency Department with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Sensory Processing Disorders.” “This sensory room will help to create a safe space for patients away from overstimulation, along with helping medical professionals provide the best treatment for our patients with these specific needs,” he continued. From 5th to 28th November, each team will battle it out in a race to reach as many milestones as possible over the month of November. Whether people are at home on their exercise bikes or out on the roads, it is easy

to get involved. Simply sign up at www.tuhf.ie/cycle, pick a team, get on your bike, and start clocking up those Kilometres for Tallaght University Hospital. The individual entry fee is €30, and entry for schools/ clubs is €15.

For those unable to take part, people can still support their chosen team by donating kilometres, to help them towards their next milestone and edge them ahead of the competition, all in aid of a worthy cause! The goal for each team is to reach as many milestones as possible by collectively travelling the most kilometres. The main aim will be to cycle the most kilometres, but there will be certain milestones for each team to reach throughout the weekend, to see who is doing best. For example, the first milestone for each camp to reach will be Dublin to Galway which is 200km,

and then Galway to the Reykjavik which is 1500km, followed by Reykjavik to Toronto which is 4000km, and so on. These milestones will be a great way to motivate each team. TUHF believe that the power of numbers will truly help each team reach

the milestones and win! There will be a top prize of European cycling holiday in 2022, for the individual who cycles the most kilometres, and a top prize of a hotel voucher for the most fundraised overall. There will also be fantastic smaller prizes for the most

fundraised in each camp. To encourage cashless fundraising in accordance with government and HSE recommendations, when signing up via the TUHF website www.tuhf.ie/cycle, iDonate will generate a fundraising page, allowing people to start fundraising immediately.

GAINS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN BUDGET 2022 TO HELP THEM WITH COST OF LIVING

Young people will benefit from a range of Budget measures which will help them with cost of living

pressures, a localTD has said. Emer Higgins, who represents Dublin Mid West, said: “We must recognise

the significant challenges facing young people and to help them meet their full potential in education, the jobs market and indeed all walks of life. “I am pleased Budget 2022 contains a range of measures to assist them, particularly after Covid -19 which saw them sacrifice so much in terms of their working, social and family lives.

We are indebted to how young people all over this country responded to and supported this country during the pandemic. “Funding of €25 million for the introduction of a Youth Travel Card in this budget is a major boost. This card will be available to people between the ages of 19 and 23 and will allow them to avail of a 50 per cent discount on fares across the country’s transport network. “We

all

know

how

substantially the cost of living can impact on young people and I’m glad travel costs for the likes of college students and young working people are being addressed in this budget. “Climate action has also featured heavily in this budget and I recently raised this point in the Dáil that a strong climate action plan requires climate conscious public transport.

“Therefore I really believe that halving the cost of public transport for this age group will mean less people in cars and more people taking the Bus, Dart or Luas or train which will save money but also reduce our carbon emissions and go a long way towards tackling the climate crisis. “The Government has also accepted the recommendation of the Low Pay Commission to increase the national minimum wage by 30 cent to €10.50

per hour, which is to be welcomed.

“In an extremely significant and progressive move, the Budget contains a dedicated women’s health package worth €31 million. The health package will include access to free contraception for women aged 17-25 from next August. “The provision of free contraception was a crucial element brought for consideration to the Women’s Health Taskforce established by then Minister for Health Simon Harris, arising out of the recommendations of the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment. “For students attending college from the next college year, the SUSI Maintenance Grant will increase by €200. The income threshold to qualify for student grants will increase by €1,000 – ensuring more students qualify and more families

can access support. “The distance for the higher non-adjacent student grant will be reduced from 45km to 30km. This means more students who are living away from home or travelling to college will qualify for the higher grant. “These three changes follow on from an increase in post-graduate grants in 2021 and are in addition to €22 million announced in financial and mental health supports for students. “From the next college year, the €200 levy to take part in a PLC Course will be abolished, which will apply to every PLC course in the ETBs across the country. “Budget 2022 has a total Skills Package of €52 million which includes targeted skills training in areas of need such as climate, developing apprenticeships and an adult literacy plan, which is an extremely welcome development,” Deputy Higgins concluded.

TEXACO SPORT CLUB FUNDING OLDER PERSONS TRY NEW ACTIVITIES AS PART OF EUROPEAN WEEK OF SPORT INITIATIVE

Renowned Irish rugby international Donncha O’Callaghan had the enthusiastic support of delighted young sports fans, Jack Whelan (6) from Tallaght and Grace Kelly (11) from Ballyfermot at the launch of the 2021 Texaco Support for Sport initiative. Now open to sports clubs across the 26-counties, a gross fund of €130,000 is being set aside for distribution to sports clubs on a twenty-six, county-by-county basis, with successful applicants receiving €5,000 in each case. Last year, the successful county winner to receive a €5,000 award was Cliffhangers Youth Climbing Club who applied under the scheme for funding to ‘purchase additional competition-grade wall climbing holds at its Finglas training base’. Launching the scheme this year, James Twohig, Director of Ireland Operations,

Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited said: “At a time when many sports clubs have had to weather difficulties and limitations of one kind or another, the Texaco Support for Sport initiative opens up an avenue to funding for those that need it most.” Information and rules governing the operation of the scheme can be viewed online at www.TexacoSupportforSport. com, the most important requirement being that applicant clubs be properly constituted and hold a valid Games & Sports Number (GS Number) issued by the Office of the Revenue Commissioners and featured on a recent list published by them on 30th June 2021. Open for applications from now until 31 December 2021, adjudication will take place in January 2022.

European Week of Sport took place from 23rd to 30th of September to promote sport and physical activity in countries across Europe. The week is for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level. As part of European Week of Sport, Age & Opportunity held a number of activities in line with Covid-19 restrictions, including horse-riding, archery, clay

pigeon shooting, salsa and walking football. This gave people an opportunity to try something they’ve never done before. Age & Opportunity is the national organisation working to enable the best possible quality of life for us all as we age. Two of their FitLine mentors, Brenda Doyle and Mairead McLoughlin, tried horse riding for the first

time with the Fettercairn Horse Riding Project in Tallaght. They both really enjoyed it and the weather even played it’s part. Kingswood and Kilnamanagh Men’s Club travelled to the wonderful Abbeyfield Farm in Clane, Co. Kildare to try their hand at Archery and Clay Pigeon Shooting. The lads certainly enjoyed testing their aim and even managed a few bullseye’s.

IRELAND SENIOR WOMEN TO COMPETE IN FIBA WOMEN’S EUROBASKET 2023 Ireland’s senior women’s team will compete in the qualifiers for the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2023. It’s the first time since 2009 that Ireland’s senior women will play in Europe’s top tier competition. The group draw for the EuroBasket qualifiers takes place in Munich on Friday, with Ireland’s first fixtures due to take place in November. A decision on the Irish senior men will be made next year, when the application process for FIBA EuroBasket 2024 qualifiers opens up.

Submissions to play in the competition must be made to FIBA by August 2022. The qualifying groups for the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2023 will have no more than four teams, and Ireland will play each team on a home and away basis in a round robin system. Ireland will be vying for one of 14 available tournament places on offer, with hosts Israel and Slovakia already automatically qualified. Basketball Ireland’s interim CEO, Paddy Boyd, said: “We

lodged our application with FIBA in July to play in the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2023 and this is a significant signal of intent for our sport. This gives our senior women the chance to compete against Europe’s best, having reached the final of the FIBA Women’s European Championship for Small Countries last month. Irish basketball will be dining at the top table of European basketball and we cannot wait for the qualifying draw on August 20th, where we could see

the likes of Spain or France playing here in Dublin. “Our Irish senior men did our country proud last week and have made a compelling case to play in the 2024 FIBA

EuroBasket, but we have to wait until next year to put forward our application to FIBA, when those qualifiers are due to start.” There are three international

windows for the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2023 qualifiers, with two games per window, taking place in Nov 2022 and with the third window in Feb 2023.

programmes of this kind we see quickly how creative people are when they have the right tools and when they work together. We believe that this resource will positively transform the way children learn. The programme will provide educational STEM resource to schools in the Tallaght/ Clondalkin community. It is exciting, ground breaking and inclusive and it promotes our Champions Cup theme of ‘Diversity, Equality, Community’”. Shamrock Rovers F.C.’s Community Officer Tony O’Neill added: “Community is at the heart of Shamrock Rovers Football Club and the club is continuously engaged in supporting and building relationships with the local community. Our schools programme has enabled hundreds of children from schools in the area to engage in physical wellbeing workshops, delivered by our community and academy coaches. I look forward to working alongside our team of volunteers implementing this engaging and inclusive project, providing coding classes for children in our partner schools. We are proud to work with Unite on this initiative.”

MOTORING LIFE

WITH

NEW OPEL MOKKA-E POWERS UP

By Breda Corrigan It will come as no surprise to hear that the all-electric vehicle (EV) market in Ireland is growing increasingly competitive, with more and more manufacturer’s jumping on the rapidlyaccelerating bandwagon, so to speak. One major player on the EV field is Opel, whose all-new Mokka-e has just been launched. Reinventing Opel. The future strategy for the Iconic German vehicle manufacturer can be summed up with the simple phrase “We’re Reinventing Opel”, and this is truly evident in recent offerings from Opel – namely the new Corsa supermini, new Crossland small SUV/Crossover, and now the new Mokka. Coming soon will be the launch of the new Opel Grandland, with a new Astra and Manta in the not too distant future. The new Opel Mokka-e features Opel’s new design language, with the ‘Vizor’ face the centrepiece. There is no need for a traditional grille in electric cars like the Mokka-e, so the ‘Vizor’ creates a seamless integration of future lighting and other technologies, all within a high-tech protective surface. The vizor of the new

Mokka extends in one single sweep across the front of the vehicle underneath the bonnet, visually stretching its width and organising the fascia with a reduced amount of elements. No superfluous decoration disturbs the focus on a pure, flush surface that perfectly integrates the headlights. The legendary Opel lightning-flash emblem proudly dominates the centre. It looks pure, precise and technical, a perfect match to the new Mokka that will only have high-quality LED lamps as well as the latest generation of IntelliLux LED® matrix headlights – a true highlight in this market segment. The Opel Vizor will become a hallmark of all Opel models in the course of the 2020s with the idea of further clustering top technologies. Head-Turning Design. Possessing a magical blend of elegant styling, a sumptuous cabin and advanced safety systems, the new Opel Mokka-e is a real headturning car in every respect. The Mokka-e uses a 100kW electric motor which produces 134bhp and 260Nm of torque, and is linked to a 50kWh battery, which you can charge at up to 100kW at a public rapid charger in as little as

30 minutes (15-80%). A standard domestic wall box charger will provide a full charge (0-100%) in little over seven and a half hours, with a range of up to 324km’s on offer from a fully charged battery. The powertrain in the Mokka-e offers a good balance between efficiency and performance, with a 0-100km/h sprint achievable in just 8.5-seconds. Two Trim Levels. The new Opel Mokka-e is offered in two trim levels – SRi and Elite, with both models attracting standard equipment such as a leather, flat-bottom steering wheel, sports mode switch, acoustic improvement pack, 10” capacitive touch multimedia system with navigation, enhanced 12” multi-colour driver display instrument panel, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, Bluetooth audio streaming, USB connectivity, DAB radio, Opel Connect, 17” alloy wheels, Eco-LED headlights, LED front fog lights, LED daytime running lights, rear LED lights, auto high beam assist, electric mirrors, 180-degree panoramic rear view camera pack, rear parking sensors, electronic climate control and a front centre armrest, along with a suite of

advanced safety systems for ultimate peace of mind on the go. Test Car. My Opel Mokka-e test car was a range-topping Elite model, which looked amazing in vibrant Matcha Green Metallic paintwork with a contrasting black roof, mirror casings, and body mouldings for a rugged SUV look. Exclusive standard features in Elite trim include a driver’s seat massage function, grey roof headliner, jet black leather upholstery, distinctive 17” bi-colour alloy wheels, solar absorbing windows, and side window mouldings with bright chrome roof line and a black belt line finisher. The single-speed automatic transmission in the front-wheel drive Mokka-e comes with a push-button regenerative braking function, which applies the brakes as soon as the right foot is taken off the accelerator, thereby increasing battery range in the process. The Mokka-e handles well and can absorb road imperfections and speed ramps with ease. Light steering provides good feedback to the driver ensuring that the car remains engaging through corners. The classic exterior look

of the new Mokka-e is replicated inside, with Opel’s ‘Pure Panel’ upmarket infotainment screen taking centre stage. While the new Opel Mokka is fractionally shorter than its predecessor, it has gained interior space due to an increased wheelbase, which was made possible by moving the wheels closer to both ends of the car. As a result, there is good leg, head and knee room throughout the cabin, while the 310-litre load space in the Mokka-e can be greatly expanded when the rear seat backs are folded flat. Verdict & Pricing. Overall, the all-new Opel Mokka-e is a joy to drive, very pleasing on the eye and is packed with the very latest in battery, infotainment and safety technology. Designed to stand out from the crowd, it is clear to see that Opel has succeeded in redefining the rules with the new Mokka-e, and I love the bold new direction that Opel is taking with their latest creations. The Opel Mokka-e SRi is priced at €33,038, with the Mokka-e Elite priced at €34,444 (both prices inclusive of a VRT rebate and SEAI grant presently available for private buyers).
