ACTION NOT WORDS

As news breaks of a third homeless person to lose their life in a week Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has said that ‘the housing crisis needs action not words’. His comments were made as Minister Eoghan Murphy announced yet another high-level summit to discuss the homelessness crisis. Deputy Ó Broin said: “Last week, three people who were homeless have lost their lives. These tragedies should not

have happened. They are the direct result of a broken housing system that does not meet the needs of some of societies most vulnerable people. “Last week also saw the publication of deeply disturbing family homeless figures for Dublin showing yet another rise in the number of families and children living in emergency accommodation. “In response, Minister Eoghan Murphy has

called a high-level summit of officials from central and local government to discuss the deepening crisis. This will be the third homeless summit in four years. “The Housing and homeless crisis needs action, not words. More importantly, there is a need for a radical change of policy direction. Government is not doing enough to stem the flow of people into homelessness, nor are they doing enough to source the

permanent homes that people in emergency accommodation so desperately need. “People will be forgiven for thinking that this high-level summit is about optics and not substance. “When will the Government restrict the grounds on which landlords can serve vacant possession notices to quit when selling their properties? When will the Government give rental tenants greater rent certainty and security of tenure? When will government adopt an aggressive strategy for buying turn key properties available to purchase? When will the government start to unlock the potential of 180,000 vacant units across the state? “These are the actions that will start to turn the tide of chronic housing need and homelessness. Minister Murphy doesn’t need a high-level summit to do any of this. We just need to have the political courage and will to admit that his predecessors’ plans have failed and that he is going to do things differently.”

MINISTER CONTINUING TO IGNORE SCOURGE IN SCRAMBLERS AND QUAD BIKES Published by: Newsgroup, Unit 3 Floor 2 St. Dominics Shopping Centre, St. Dominics Road, Tallaght, Dublin, D24 HK49. Local Fianna Fáil TD, John Curran has said successive Minister’s for Transport have choosen to ignore the very serious escalating problem with the improper ownership and use of scrambler and quad bikes. Earlier this year, Deputy Curran received a commitment through parliamentary question that Transport Minister, Shane Ross would be holding a meeting with the Minister for Justice to discuss the need for legislation to deal with the dangerous use of scrambler bikes. This meeting has yet to take place despite a renewed promise as recent as July. “Quad Bikes and Scramblers are causing havoc in local communities across Dublin. In my own area of Dublin Mid-West it has become a serious problem that is now reaching a crisis point for some residents,” explained Deputy Curran. “Many young unlicensed and uninsured young people are driving quads and

scrambler bikes in housing estates and public spaces. This is posing a serious risk to the health and safety of the general public, while causing significant damage to the environment. “Many local residents have made me aware of their public safety concerns and of the degree of anti-social behaviour linked to the use of scramblers and other mechanically propelled vehicles in public spaces. “Minister Ross confirmed to me through our correspondence in late 2016 that he was in the process of arranging to meet with the then Justice Minister on the issue. “Ten months on and still no meeting between both relevant Ministers to coordinate a response,” he added. “There are bye-laws in place regarding how scramblers and quads can be used but can be difficult to enforce. It is crucial that we see greater enforcement and compliance with these laws to ensure young

people and their parents are encouraged to heed the dangers of improper use. “As the number of accidents and incidents of antisocial behaviour rise, a coordinated approach needs to be adopted by the Gardaí, the local authority and the wider community to clamp down on the improper use of scramblers and quads in our community,” concluded Deputy Curran.

O’CONNOR RENEWS APPEAL REGARDING TALLAGHT WEST BUS SERVICE Local Councillor Charlie O’Connor has renewed his calls for a community response to the ongoing threat to the bus service in Tallaght West. The matter has been raised at all recent meetings of the monthly Dublin Bus/Luas Community Forum which is held in Killinarden Enterprise Centre and attended by Tallaght Gardai, Dublin Bus Management and Union, Luas Management and Community representatives. He said that the meetings have heard reports of stone and missiles throwing, windows being broken, incidents on the buses and youths scutting on the back of the buses. According to Charlie O’Connor, everything possible must be done to preserve and protect the bus service to the community. He added that a partnership approach was required involving the Gardai, Dublin Bus, the Council and the local community. In that regard, he had brought his concerns in the matter to the direct attention of senior Gardai and Dublin Bus management and had appealed to them to ensure that everything possible was done to guarantee the full bus service. He added that the local community had a clear role to play in respect of this crisis and he particularly appealed to parents of young people involved in this anti social behavior to take action to illuminate the problem. He said that Councillor Brian Leech and himself, who attend the meetings of the Dublin Bus/Luas Community Forum, will continue to give this matter their particular attention and support efforts to deal with the crisis.

OVER 5,000 FAMILIES SOUGHT BACK-TO-SCHOOL ASSISTANCE FROM SVP LAST MONTH

The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) received a record number of calls in August, which included calls from over 5,000 families seeking back-to-school help. That is about 40% of the requests for practical assistance received by the Society last month from households in need. This figure may even be understated according to the Society as SVP members often see families cut back on essentials like food and heating due to school costs. “Particularly at this time of the year, families approach SVP for help with utility bills or food shopping because of the pressure of buying uniforms, books and other materials and paying for the so-called ‘voluntary’ contribution.” said SVP spokesperson Tricia Keilthy. “Back-to-school this week has been a really exciting time for lots of children and their parents. But for many low income and struggling households, the preparation for the new school year has been a huge source of stress and anxiety, with the

prospect of further requests throughout the year for contributions for education, exam and extra- curricular expenses. “As well as the ordinary costs of school, some of the emerging issues that we see include the huge costs of Transition Year registration and trips and an increasing requirement for expensive digital devices. “Achieving in school can break the cycle of poverty, but if children don’t have the materials they need to learn, if they feel different because their uniform is too small, or they can’t take part in activities like their friends, that really influences their experience of school and educational progress. If we really want all to children to have good opportunities, we have to stop making cost a barrier to participation.” she said SVP is calling on the Minister for Education to start to make free education a reality with proper funding for schools and additional supports for parents.

While the increase in the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance this year was welcome, says SVP, it remains significantly below 2011 levels.

SVP members visit many families with parents in low

income work who are a few euros above the threshold and receive no state assistance. Capitation grants have also been reduced since 2010 meaning schools are seeking contributions from families to subsidise running costs.

CLONDALKIN NEEDS YOUR BRAS INITIATIVE A GREAT SUCCESS

“Ann McDonnell and Lynn Lee are a breath of fresh air. They are so creative and so committed to volunteering and I’m delighted that their day in Corkagh Park was another success. The two sisters have raised around €50,000 for charity over the past seven years. This years event was held to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Research and it succeeded on both fronts. It was fantastic to be part of the event and amazing to see Corkagh’s main path lined with bras of all colours and sizes. There were some puzzled onlookers in the park but everyone was hugely supportive of the initiative and it was fantastic to see so many local women support this initiative. Well done to everyone who donated and congratulations to Ann and Lynn on their innovative fundraiser,” said Cllr. Emer Higgins.

NEW ROAD MARKINGS ON MAYBERRY ROAD A HAZARD

Dublin South West TD, Seán Crowe, claims the new road markings on the Mayberry Road in the Kilnamanagh area of Tallaght are creating confusion and are not fit for purpose. The Sinn Féin TD said the signage has been a talking point in the area with motorists claiming the new markings for cars and busses are too narrow and has called on South Dublin County Council to review and remove the controversial markings. The local TD said he believes the markings are substandard, creating a traffic hazard to road users, and need to be removed. Deputy Seán Crowe said: “The ultimate nightmare for any road user is uncertainty, confusion, and a road signage layout that doesn’t make sense, but that is what is facing drivers on the

Mayberry Road in the Kilnamanagh area of Tallaght. “The new road markings for cars and cyclists have become a talking point with many expressing a real and genuine fear over the possible implications of the new road markings. It’s clear that the width of the road markings for cars and buses is way off and this is distracting to drivers. It is impossible for a large vehicle to stay within the current markings. I fear it will create a number of insurance problems if an accident should occur on that stretch of road. “As someone who regularly travels along the Mayberry Road, passing the Kilnamanagh Shopping Centre and towards the Greenhills Road, the challenge on the road is obvious. I am amazed and somewhat surprised that

someone from South Dublin County Council authorised and actually signed off on this particular road signage job. “The current road markings are confusing for motorists and cyclists because of the narrow gauge markings and must be a worry for the many bus drivers using this route. The road markings are so

narrow that a bus or even the smallest of motor vehicles would have difficulty staying within the current markings. “I am calling on South Dublin County Council to carry out a review and remove these markings that are clearly substandard, not fit for purpose, and creating a traffic hazard for road users.”

DECISION BY IRISH WATER NOT TO PROCEED WITH BIOSOLIDS STORAGE FACILITY AT GREENOGUE WELCOMED

Local Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Mid-West John Curran has welcomed the decision by Irish Water not to proceed with a proposed Regional Biosolids Storage Facility at Greenogue. Commenting on the issue Deputy Curran said: “Irish Water was looking at a proposed site at Greenogue, Newcastle, for a Biosolids Storage Facility which I strongly objected to. The proposed site at Greenogue was situated very close to a childcare facility and to the residential

communities of Rathcoole and Newcastle. This area of Greenogue Newcastle/Rathcoole is zoned for Enterprise and Employment and to develop a Regional Biosolids Storage Facility at this location would be a waste of a well located scarce land resource and would be unproductive for employment in the area. For these reasons I am satisfied to hear that Irish Water has not identified Greenogue as the preferred site.”

WE SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID OF PUBLIC SERVICE CARDS FOR ACCESSING STATE SERVICES

25 EU MEMBER STATES HAVE NATIONAL ID CARDS

Dublin MEP Brian Hayes said that the Government is right to continue the role out of the Public Services Card. The Fine Gael MEP has previously called for the introduction of a national ID card system, which the majority of EU Member States already have in order to improve public services. “I think it is right that a Public Service Card is required to access public

services. Our methods of documenting citizens has become outdated and needs to be modernised. It makes public services more efficient and user friendly for everyone.” “All 28 EU Member States except for Ireland, UK and Denmark issue their citizens with national identity cards with the majority of Member States making it compulsory to hold one. “The Public Service Card is

not compulsory but if you require a State service it is only right that you should be required to have it. A passport is not compulsory but if you want to travel to another country it is mandatory. A driving license is not compulsory but if you want to drive its mandatory. The Public Service Card is no different.” “There has been a considerable amount of scaremongering recently

MAYNOOTH, CO.KILDARE

which is unjustified. The Public Service Card has existed for 5 years and has been successful in reducing social welfare fraud as well as speeding up welfare applications. The bureaucracy associated with accessing public services is often criticised. Expanding the use of Public Service Cards will streamline state services making them more efficient for everybody” concluded MEP Hayes

DESPICABLE VIOLENT ATTACKS ON LOCAL DELIVERY DRIVERS MUST BE STOPPED Local Fianna Fáil TD, John Lahart has said that acts of violence on takeaway delivery drivers in the Dublin South-West must be condemned by all. Reacting to reports of the cruel assault on delivery driver, Satheesan Narayanan, Deputy Lahart said, “It is deeply upsetting that incidents of this nature are occurring in our community. Mr Narayanan was going about his work, earning a livelihood when he suffered this distressing assault. I know that so many in our area will share my outrage and condemn this violence. “The Garda division serving our area has suffered significant cutbacks in recent years but the fact is that we need a serious increase in Garda numbers patrolling and policing the Tallaght area to tackle anti-social behaviour including these despicable violent attacks. “Residents want to be assured that their streets and neighbourhoods are safe, but the Minister’s measures have created nothing but fear and anxiety among ordinary people living here. “Young people in particular must be aware that antisocial behaviour, especially unprovoked assaults will not be tolerated. A collaborative effort between community groups, youth services and parents would also help significantly to tackle challenging behaviour by some young people. “We require a strengthened police force that is active, visible and effective to deter young people from engaging in crime and violent behaviour. The Government must do more to ensure that the use of Garda resources is maximised to support our community.”

GREATER USE OF THE PERSONAL ALERT SCHEME URGED Dublin South West Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe has urged senior citizens to make better use of the Personal Alert Scheme.

Deputy Crowe made his call after two separate savage attacks on senior citizens were highlighted in the courts and believes that

the original scheme and the criteria for its access needs to be reviewed in light of its poor take up. Crowe said; “Like most

people I was horrified and extremely angry watching and reading the reports this week of vicious assaults on senior citizens in their homes by sick and depraved cowards and thugs. “Unfortunately these cases highlight in a scary and graphic way, the vulnerability of senior citizens, many of whom live in isolated areas. “The last thing I or anyone else wants to do is needlessly frighten or undermine the confidence of senior citizens, but I would urge more of them and their families, to consider taking up the Government’s Personal Alert Scheme that is currently undersubscribed. “Under a third of the €800,000 allocated last year was spent on the

scheme which provides personal alarms for those over 65 living alone and who meet the criteria. Lack of knowledge of the scheme or information on the organisations registered for the alert scheme may also be a factor in its low take up. “Considering the obvious need for this type of support service it is shameful particularly when you consider the amount of older people who could possibly benefit from the scheme. The low take up would suggest it needs to be reviewed and I will be urging the Minister Catherine Byrne who is responsible to do just that. “The Senior Alert Scheme enables many elderly to continue living securely in their own home. The alarms

are monitored on a 24/7 basis and allow older people who get into difficulty to receive instant support from family and friends or the Emergency Services. “Any starting point for building an inclusive society should be that no senior citizens should feel isolated or frightened in their own home and those who target them need to face the maximum sentencing available. “The Personal Alert Scheme can help. It breaks down isolation giving greater confidence to someone knowing that help is just a phone call away. Following this week’s awful stories I am personally appealing and urging greater take up of this scheme by senior citizens and their loved ones.”

CHILLY MONKEYS DONATE 800 DINERS CARDS The Temple Street Children’s Hospital is very close to the hearts to the owners of Chilly Monkeys and they decided to give something back to the hospital staff in recognition of the fantastic and vital work that they do.

the 17th of August 2017 we visited the Temple Street Foundation and donated 800 Chilly Monkeys Diners Cards to the staff which have a value of €16,000.00, which will provide 30% off meals in participating restaurants for a year.

James Hall said “Instead of a money donation we wanted to give the staff something that they can really use themselves, so on

For a lot of us September means the summer break is coming to an end and it is time to get the kids ready to go back to school.

Unfortunately for so many families here in Ireland this is sadly not the case and this is where the fantastic work of The Temple Street Children’s Hospital steps in”.

APPLY NOW FOR THE WINTER FUEL ALLOWANCE

Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Mid-West and Chair of the Social Protection Committee John Curran is urging older people to ensure that they get their applications for the Winter Fuel Allowance in to the Department of Social Protection on time if they want to avail of new lump sum payments. The deadline for this year is the 15th September. People now have the option of applying for a lump

sum instead of the regular weekly payment. “As part of changes to the scheme, following lobbying by a variety of older people’s organisations, the Department of Social Protection has agreed to the option of paying the Winter Fuel Allowance in two lump sums – €292.50 in October and the remaining €292.50 in January – or to continue to receive the weekly payments of €22.50”, explained Deputy

Curran. “This is a very positive development as it will allow people to buy larger quantities of fuel and avail of the discounts associated with bulk buying. Equally, it will allow people with oil heating to fill their tanks ahead of the winter cold spell, without having to worrying about paying such a large bill. “We need to remember that pensioners have fixed incomes and it can be very

difficult to pull together two or three hundred euros to pay for a delivery of oil. “I am calling on people in Clondalkin, Lucan and Palmerstown to ensure that if they want to receive the lump sum payments they ensure that they have their applications filled out and sent to the Department of Social Protection by the 15th September so that their payments can be logged and paid on time”.

BOXING GREATS LIGHT UP NEW STORE AND HELP NEW GENERATION Some of the greats of Irish boxing left the bright lights of the ring to unveil Dublin’s new lighting destination in Churchtown, and help the sport’s next generation in the process. Former Olympic bronze medallist Michael Conlon and Irish High-Performance Director Bernard Dunne opened the new Fantasy Lights destination showroom on Braemor Road. And they presented sponsored kit to youngsters Emma Harding, Shane Grant and Conor Dargan from Whitechurch Boxing Club who have excelled at the sport this year. Emma is the Monkstown BC International champion, Shane is the Dublin League Champion and Conor took honours in both the Dublin League and the Monkstown BC international tournament. Former World amateur champion Michael wore the Fantasy Lights branding in his recent super bantamweight bout in the US. He and Bernard joined the

design agency behind some of the world’s biggest retail and leisure luxury brands in unveiling the latest creation in the leafy destination of Dublin’s Churchtown The new Fantasy Lights destination showroom on Braemor Road has been designed by Chris DewarDixon and his company Four IV who create interiors for Harvey Nichols stores worldwide in locations as diverse at Doha, Baku, Hong Kong and Istanbul. They design for the world’s top luxury brands such as Burberry, Armani and the East India Company, a host of iconic hotels such as Raffles and the Mandarin Group and were also responsible for the design of the ground floor at Brown Thomas in Grafton Street. And according to the awardwinning creator, his work in designing Fantasy Lights’ new lighting destination showroom has produced a result to compare with any of his previous projects. “This store is purely about lights, and visitors will see products against specific

materials – so you will have garden lighting against green and deckingcolours for example, but presented in an imaginative way,” said Chris. “I got involved in the project when I met Fantasy Lights founder Gabriel Byrne through a mutual friend in the lighting industry and I was hooked by his vision of a lighting destination where a customer can go from advice all the way through to installation.”

advise, design, supply and install service which takes care of the full lighting process. “Lighting is fast becoming the mood setter for interior design, and more householders than ever are looking for pieces to set off a room. “Our new showrooms carry a vast, and in many cases

unique, range of highquality light fittings, handpicked for the Irish market. “As well as our own collections, we feature the Schuller and Elstead lifestyle ranges of living area lighting and a specially-curated collection of Tipperary Crystal chandeliers. “We have created a

destination bathroom range and are exclusive Dublin stockists for the stunning Marquis by Waterford collection. “Our garden section spotlights high-spec anticorrosion lighting for the Irish outdoors from such top names as Konstsimide and Elipta.”

One of the unique design features of Fantasy Lights 2,400 sq ft lighting destination is its clever sectionalisation, creating a flow through the showroom, beginning with a return to a more classic curved storefront window. “The showroom opens with living area lighting at the front and seamlessly moves through bathroom, kitchen and garden lighting,” said Gabriel Byrne of Fantasy Lights. “In what is a one-stop destination, we also have a specialist energy advice centre and our unique

CALL ON BANK OF IRELAND TO RESCIND ITS ATM DECISION

Dublin South West TD, Seán Crowe, has expressed his surprise at Bank of Ireland’s decision to remove the Irish language option from its ATMs. Crowe described the decision as a surprising and retrograde step. Teachta Seán Crowe said: “The removal of the Irish language option from Bank of Ireland’s ATMs is a backward step and a denigration of Irish language rights. This uncalled for and retrograde step is out kilter with Irish values and Irish sentiment, and will come as a surprise to many Bank of Ireland customers. “The banking sector, which is already discredited in many people’s eyes,

has been extremely slow in facilitating Irish language speakers. It is currently impossible to get statements, online banking or any customer service in Irish anywhere. “Bank of Ireland as the largest bank in Ireland has been somewhat unique in making an effort to simply facilitate the Irish language with the provision of ATMs with an Irish option. “This cost, little if anything, met the needs of tens of thousands of its customers and allowed the bank to show that it values the Irish language, a key element of our identity. “However, in a very disappointing move it seems

“THERE IS A SERIOUS LACK OF CONSIDERATION REGARDING THE IRISH LANGUAGE AND IRISH LANGUAGE RIGHTS AMONGST THE PRIVATE SECTOR WHICH IS UNACCEPTABLE” that the Bank is rowing back on this small but valued option. There is a serious

lack of consideration regarding the Irish language and Irish language rights amongst the private sector which is unacceptable. “It is well known that the provision of Irish in branding, marketing and customer service is good for business. Even those without the language appreciate it when Irish is valued by private sector business. By this move Bank of Ireland is devaluing the Irish language. “Irish based banks and their loyal customers have been beset by many catastrophic financial and personal problems in the last decade. Irish citizens and hard pressed taxpayers have had

to dig deep and without ever being consulted, have been forced to come to their rescue. “Surely the very least that Bank of Ireland could do is include in their corporate responsibility the simple option of communicating with their customers in this cost free manner in

the national language of their choice. Shame on Bank of Ireland’s senior management for taking this uncalled for and unnecessary decision. “This proposal is a retrograde step, it is out of step with Irish values and Irish sentiment, and it should be rescinded.”

ILLEGAL DUMPING IN DUBLIN COSTING THE TAXPAYER WHILE SPOILING COMMUNITIES

Fianna Fáil Dublin Spokesperson, John Lahart TD has raised concerns regarding the rise of illegal dumping across Dublin, and in particular the South Dublin region. According to the annual report published by South Dublin County Council, almost 5,000 tonnes of illegal waste was collected by council authorities last

year. This marks an increase of close to 1,000 tonnes in comparison to the year previous. He said, “Every week I receive reports from Dublin residents about illegal dumping in their community. In many cases, bags of household refuse are being dumped in widely used public spaces which raise major public health

concerns for families and the environment as a whole. “We know from figures provided in South Dublin County Council’s report that less and less people are facing fines or sanction for illegal littering as only 434 fines were issued out of close to 4,000 complaints. It appears to be proving difficult to obtain evidence to identify those carrying

out any illegal dumping. “There are just a handful of officers employed to enforce important by-laws which makes it virtually impossible for them to monitor what is the most densely populated urban area in Ireland. He added, “Dublin city residents are therefore forced to put up with litter, fly-tipping and dumping

far too regularly. I believe that increasing the level of resources that are currently available, including the number of officers, could help properly combat illegal dumping across Dublin. CCTV surveillance is also essential in clamping down on this issue in dumping black spots. “The cost of illegal dumping ultimately falls back on

the taxpayer and is only set to increase further as the problem worsens. If this issue is not adequately addressed soon, it will eventually begin to impact heavily on local authority budgets and negatively burden our economy as a whole,” concluded Deputy Lahart.

The National Transport Authority’s 10th annual walking challenge will take place from Monday 4th of September to Sunday 1st of October 2017 and newly elected Mayor of South Dublin County Council Cllr. Paul Gogarty has challenged staff in South Dublin County Council to get walking. Who can walk the furthest …Planners? Architects?

Engineers? Admin? Porters? Could it be Library or General Services staff…….. who knows!! The Step Challenge creates a bit of ‘healthy’ competition within organisations, and staff in South Dublin County Council have enrolled in the programme once again this year. Mayor Gogarty said “During my acceptance speech

at the Council’s Annual meeting in June this year, I set out a number of themes I wish to pursue during my term as Mayor. Highlighting health initiatives along with positive mental and physical wellbeing were just some of those themes. That’s why I’m delighted to promote this healthy workforce initiative for both Council staff and

staff in other organisations countywide, which also promotes sustainable transport options for workers. I look forward to taking the step challenge myself to see how many kilometres a busy

Mayor clocks up in a week.” The Step Challenge is a fun, free walking challenge where teams of 3-6 people aim to increase their daily step counts, to have fun and to win prizes! The initiative is run by

the National Transport Authority. Further information on the Step Challenge and the Smarter Travel Workplace public awareness programme is available here http://www. stepchallenge.ie/

NEW TECHNOLOGY PUTS CENSUS 2016 ON THE MAP Researchers at ADAPT Help OSi and CSO to Publish Ireland’s Census 2016 Information

The ADAPT Centre for Digital Content Technology in collaboration with Ordnance Survey Ireland and the Central Statistics Office have recently published the findings from Ireland’s Census 2016 online. This information has been made available at http:// census2016.geohive. ie/. On this website, the CSO statistical data from the 2016 Census and OSi geospatial boundary data have been fused together to provide almost 500 layers of geo-statistical information, visualised as colour coded thematic

maps or downloadable as Open Data. Visitors can access statistics in any of the 15 Census themes, including Education, Commuting, and Housing. The interactive website also provides instructional videos and tools to build your own StoryMap, enabling public users to interact with the latest Census data to the fullest. ADAPT have supported this project from conception, as Lorraine McNerney, General Manager for Geospatial Systems at OSi, explains: “This initiative from OSi and the CSO builds on

a collaborative project with the ADAPT Centre which developed boundary information as Linked Data on the Web. On this site, Census 2016 datasets have been combined OSi’s official boundary data to link geography and statistics. This project is a tangible application of the project results where end users and web developers will be able to interact with some of OSi’s key data sets and content in more intelligent, exciting and creative ways.” The ADAPT Centre, a world-leading research centre funded by Science Foundation Ireland, have

DUBLIN SEES SOLID TOURISM GROWTH

Fine Gael, Dublin South West TD Colm Brophy has welcomed the latest official data on overseas data from the CSO. “Dublin has seen an increase in annual overseas visitor numbers of nearly 2.3 million since 2010. “The first seven months of this year have seen over five and a half million visitors to our shores. Overall trips to Ireland were up 3.1% compared to the same period in 2016. “The tourism sector has played a crucial role in the Irish economic recovery. Measures such as the retention of the 9% VAT rate on tourism services have been significant in helping our tourism sector weather the recession. “The figures show that the number of North American and European visitors continues to surge ahead, despite a slight drop in numbers from the UK. “In Dublin, the numbers employed in tourism continue to grow with an increase of 27,300 since 2011. These jobs are vital to our economy and communities.

FOOTBALL FOR ALL STRATEGY LAUNCH WITH JAMES CASSERLY The Football Association of Ireland launched its Football For All Strategy 2017-2020 in front of a large crowd, which included An Tanaiste Frances Fitzgerald, in The Marker Hotel. Made up of five pillars (Participation, Organisational Development, Education, High Performance, Communications & Promotion), the Strategy aims to build on the fantastic work that has been done in all facets of the Football For All programme to promote inclusion in football on a far greater scale. Catering for anyone with a disability who wants to play football, the programme has made huge strides since its inception in 2002 with more players than ever before involved, over 35 clubs around the country, and notable progression made at international level. FAI CEO John Delaney said: “The Football For All programme has been a big success story for the FAI in recent years with excellent work being done all around the country. It was an honour to launch the new Strategy, which will help the programme grow even more and enable us to cater for more players in communities that deserve to have the opportunity to play football should they want to. “The programme includes a variety of disciplines including Cerebral Palsy, Blind, Deaf, Powerchair, Amputee, Frame Football and many more. And that shows just how inclusive

the programme is. We are thankful for the support of Government, our sponsors Tetrarch Hospitality, and all of the volunteers who help us to maintain this programme and we look forward to working with them in the future.” Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross said: “As Minister for Sport, I want to ensure that everybody, regardless of their ability or background, is provided with opportunities to participate in sport and to share in the benefits that physical activity can bring. “I want to acknowledge the great work the FAI is doing in making football available in so many communities around the country. It has developed excellent national programmes, including Football For All, that provides opportunities for so many people to participate in sport.” Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin said: “It is extremely important that people with disabilities have every opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity for all the same reasons as for those who do not have a disability. “The FAI has been using football as a way to effect social inclusion by developing football opportunities for all players with a disability and has had a hugely positive impact for all its participants and for society.”

“Whatever happens, it will be an entertaining fight”

The Tallaght boxer faces Bray’s Regan Buckley in a six round super bantamweight contest on the ‘Celtic Clash 3: Building Champions’ card at the National Stadium on Saturday September 9th. The card is headlined by former amateur star and RTÉ pundit Eric Donovan, who faces Welsh champion Dai Davies for the BUI Celtic featherweight title, but much of the attention has been focused on the McDonald-Buckley matchup which many feel may steal the show. All Irish pro boxing match-ups are rare enough – but at McDonald and Buckley’s stage of their careers they are almost unheard of. ‘The Cobra’ only debuted last year and currently has just two pro

fights, while his opponent only has one. A fight that has seen both commended for their refreshing bravery, there have also been some that view it as a silly and unnecessary risk. 28 year old McDonald though has a message for those of this view. “I say they are the ones that are mad, I’m not getting any younger and at least I will be in a fight this time,” said McDonald in reference to his two relatively facile victories over negative journeyman opponents. “I know I can’t just turn up and win. I’ll have to work for the win and when I will it will feel all the better as a result. They [Team Buckley] asked me to fight and I didn’t have to think

twice about it.” “It’s a no brainer, I can’t wait for it, training’s going great. we’re training here, preparing to do damage. I’ve noticed a lot of people are interested in this fight and I’m glad because these are the fights we need to be taking to be putting bums on seats.” McDonald has recently signed with Boxing Ireland Promotions, the outfit behind the card on September 9th, and Stephen Sharpe described how “In a division where there is very little domestic competition and a scarcity of opponents across Europe at that weight, both lads have taken the brave decision of facing each other at this time in their careers. This is a win-win for both lads who

GOVERNMENT MUST DO MORE TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR KIDS AS THEY HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL

Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Mid-West says the Government needs to put in place a national campaign to help promote fitness and wellbeing amongst children as a new school year is set to begin. Deputy John Curran made the comments after the initial findings of a national study of exercise levels among primary school children found that their motor skills are chronically under-developed due to a lack of physical exercise. The ‘Moving Well – Being Well’ study is being carried out by Dublin City University in collaboration with the GAA. “The initial findings of this study are shocking. The research team have found that many Irish children cannot perform basic tasks such as jumping, catching a

ball or throwing overhand. There are a number of factors which have led to this situation including overuse of electronic devices, overly cautious parents and a lack of structured sports activities in schools,” explained John Curran. “The Government needs to get serious about dealing with inactivity amongst children. A national campaign is needed to promote physical exercise and sporting activities. “We are already playing catch-up on this issue. We can’t afford to wait any longer before taking decisive action to promote fitness. The Government should be ready to implement a national campaign to coincide with the publication of this important research,” concluded Deputy John Curran.

regardless of the result can increase their profile while progressing to contend for domestic title in the near future.” It has been a feisty build up to the bout and it will only get more heated as fight night approaches. Both were winners at the 2015 National Intermediate Championships, with Buckley taking the light flyweight crown while McDonald, who was the last fighter to box out of the famous Golden Cobra club, won top honours at bantamweight. Now a natural flyweight, 20 year old Buckley is jumping up three weight divisions for the fight, and McDonald is predicting pain for the youngster. Whatever happens, it will be an entertaining fight. Buckley impressed massively on his debut in August, while McDonald

brings an all action style to the table. Headlined by the DonovanDavies title fight, the Celtic Clash 3 card also features Stephen McAfee, Martin Quinn, Regan Buckley, Colin O’Donovan, Chris Mullally, Michael Gallagher, Niall O’Connor, James Cahill, Gerard Whitehouse,

Bernard Roe, John Joyce, and Colin O’Donovan. There are a number of tickets types available, starting from €15 for under 15’s up to €100 (VIP Premium) and are available to buy by calling 085 723 6164 or online at www. ticketmaster.ie.

CREATIVE SEWING GET 2ND AND 3RD PLACE AT THE FESTIVAL OF QUILTS COMPETITION

AA RESCUE SEES INCREASE IN ELECTRIC CAR CALLOUTS

Many conventional vehicles no longer coming with a spare wheel as standard In a sign of what the future may hold for Irish motoring AA Rescue has seen an increase in the number of breakdowns reported that relate to an electric vehicle, with almost 20 such breakdowns reported already this year.

Creative Sewing, sewing classes for kids(and adults) in Rathangan, weekly and midterm workshops too. Creative Sewing recently entered two amazing quilts in the Festival of Quilts Competition at the NEC Birmingham and the great news is that they got 2nd and 3rd place in the primary section. They were delighted as you can well imagine, as entries were from all over Europe. Creative Sewing will be exhibiting these quilts as part of culture night this

Charging unit issues or vehicles running out of charge are among the key reasons for electric car breakdowns according to AA Rescue, which has invested heavily in recent months to train its roadside technicians in the latest motoring technology. “2-3 call-outs per month may not seem like much for us as we’ll attend well over 100,000 cars this year.” Says Commercial Director John Farrell “But it’s the start of a trend and we expect to see many more. While some of the electric car issues we’ve witnessed to date have been mechanical problems, such as a charging unit failing to attach properly, in other cases such as a car running out of charge the breakdown is very much self-inflicted.” “As part of our on-going efforts to address emerging motoring technology and the future of Irish motoring, our AA patrols receive regular training meaning they’re fully prepared to deal with a breakdown whether it’s a conventional car or a more modern electric vehicle. Unlike many other breakdown assistance providers who may not cover self-inflicted breakdowns, AA Rescue also covers you in the event of your electric vehicle running out of charge as

we have access to our own electric vehicle charge points.” However, in addition to charging issues which are specific to electric vehicles, the absence of a spare wheel in many electric or hybrid vehicles is the cause of almost half of such breakdowns reported to AA Rescue to date. The breakdown assistance provider is highlighting a growing trend which affects all car types, where a spare wheel is no longer provided as standard due to an effort to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. However, due to internal space being taken up by their batteries, electric cars already have reduced boot space and as a result are more likely to come without a spare wheel. “A spare wheel can weigh on average up to 20kg which may not seem like much but over the course of a year’s driving that weight adds up and could actually result in a car being placed into a different emission band and change how the car would be taxed. As a result, across the industry there’s a growing trend to omit the spare wheel and unfortunately many motorists don’t realise this until they find themselves with a flat tire,” Farrell added. “While electric cars are a part of Irish motoring today and will certainly play a much bigger role in the future, as the technology is still improving and being worked on they currently have less internal space due to the battery size of these vehicles. This may well change in the future, but for now it is an issue electric car owners need to be aware of.”
