by the Minister for Business, Enterprise, and Innovation, Heather Humphreys, representatives from the data centre industry and global technology companies and Cllr. Emer Higgins. Cllr. Higgins said, “This €1bn investment is fantastic news and
in particular for Clondalkin. We will benefit from jobs during construction and another 100 long term jobs. Permission has already been granted so we will see the sod turned here quickly.” The Minister noted it was especially encouraging to learn that Echelon will use a number of Irish suppliers and domestic expertise in its delivery. “It’s particularly encouraging to see an indigenous company making this type of commitment to a sector that we think of as being dominated by Silicon Valley giants.” Niall Molloy, CEO of Echelon, said that the provision of customisable, scalable data centre facilities is key to the continuing growth of the digital economy, driven by social media, ecommerce, digital broadcasting and the internet. “We’re thrilled that work to build Echelon’s first data centres has commenced. Between our two sites and other sites that we are in the process of identifying and acquiring in Ireland, the UK and Europe, Echelon will become one ofEurope’s biggest data centre providers,” Niall said.

Carly Bailey, the Social Democrats general election candidate for Dublin South West has recently slammed the Minister for Health for his failure to deal with the ongoing crisis in older person’s services. Figures obtained by party co-leader Deputy Róisín Shortall from the HSE show that in spite of the promises for increased funding, the number of older people on waiting lists in the CHO 7 area, which includes DublinSouth West, has increased from 973 people in May 2018 to 1,090 people waiting in October 2018. Over 6,300 people are waiting nationally. Bailey said “Many older people want to continue to live independently in their own homes but require a little assistance during the day to make this possible. As it stands, many people are being sanctioned just five hours a week help, which is just an hour a day, even if they require more support. Despite this, the government refuses to fund this vital service and the
waiting list to access the service in the first place is continuing to rise”.
bed costs approximately €6000. There is no joined up thinking around this,
something that has to change if we ever want to reform our health system.”
Deputy Shortall said “The Minister announced that there would be funding for an additional 550 Home Care Packages as part of the HSE’s Winter Plan. When seen in the context of these figures, 550 does not even represent a tenth of existing demand. This paltry figure is an insult to older people when so many are waiting for services.” Carly Bailey said “Allowing older people to have a choice and to retain their independence and autonomy is hugely important. Home packages are also much more costeffective. The average weekly cost for this service stands at €160, where as the cost of a week’s stay in a nursing home is around €1000.
Frances Fitzgerald T.D., has welcomed the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport’s decision to award Sports Capital Funding to two local sports clubs. For the first time ever, unsuccessful applicants of last year’s fundingprogramme were allowed to correct or amend their application instead of having to wait for the next round of Sports Capital Funding. Following a review of last year’s applications, Lucan Sarsfields GAA and Boshido Martial Arts Clondalkin are to receive €150,000 and €11,000 respectively.
representations to my colleague, Minister Brendan Griffin. “I am delighted for the members, athletes and supporters of Lucan Sarsfields and BMA Clondalkin - their success is testament to their hard work and dedication in delivering for their local communities. I have spoken directly with representatives of both clubs to congratulate them and pledged to continue my assistance to them over the coming year.
To compound the issue, some older people may end up staying in hospital for longer than is medically required simply because the home support budget is so depleted. Yet a hospital

I know that this funding will make a big difference to the players and coaching staff. “Minister Griffin has also informed me that this year’s Sports Capital Grants will be announced in two lots in 2019. LOCAL CLLR. ACCEPTS IVAN YATES’ NEWSTALK DARE
Local Fine Gael candidate, Cllr. Emer Higgins, responding to a dare by Ivan Yates, Newstalk, went head-to-head with the journalist in-studio on the topic of Clonburris. On his show The Hard Shoulder, Ivan had criticised the eight South Dublin Councillors who appealed the Clonburris plan, daring them to explain their position on the show. Cllr. Higgins tweeted in saying she accepted his dare. Clonburris, a town of 8,000 new houses with a population of 21,000 people, is planned for the undeveloped fields between Lucan and Clondalkin. Higgins says she’s in favour of developing the lands, but wants to see it done right.
“We’re talking about developing a town the size of Wexford, wedged between the highly populated areas of Lucan and Clondalkin. A plan of this scale can only work if we have the appropriate transport infrastructure in place. I want to see Kishogue Train Station opened earlier than planned, construction of the Link Road between the N4, N7 and N81 begun and sites clearly identified for a Garda and Fire Station,” explained Cllr.

Emer Higgins. Cllr. Higgins told us that she, along with four Independent Councillors and many Residents Associations, gave evidence at the Oral Hearing on Clonburris held by An Bord Pleanala. “We appealed the latest version of the plan as we don’t believe it’s the best version possible. As a public representative, I felt obligated to oppose the latest draft of this Plan which will short-change existing and future residents. I don’t want to look back at this decision, regretting having signed up to a Plan that I simply wasn’t happy with. This would be repeating the planning mistakes of the past and I’m not prepared to do that.” “As articulated by people like John Coleman, residents of Lucan and Clondalkin are already wasting too much time stuck in traffic jams, and we need to address these existing problems as we seek to build out the area further. This means having local road networks and traffic management plans that can handle increased traffic volumes. It also

means having public transport and other public services for our existing and new communities, all of which must come on stream as new housing is built,” continued Cllr. Higgins. “We see similar issues in areas like Rathcoole and Newcastle where the same
concerns around road capacity arise. I think we need to start looking at conditioning developers to construct sections of new road, already in our Development Plan, to ensure that we deliver housing in tandem with infrastructure,” concluded Emer Higgins.
BUSCONNECTS LIFFEY VALLEY BUS CORRIDOR PLANS PUBLISHED
The NTA announced a second phase of public consultation for a number of new bus corridors in recent weeks. The second phase includes a bus corridor with upgraded sections from Liffey Valley to Dublin City Centre. This route goes through the upper end of Palmerstown through Ballyfermot and Inchicore to the City Centre. The upgrade may effect up to 60 properties. The public consultation is open until 29th March.
Cllr Madeleine Johansson of People Before Profit commented: “The new bus corridors will significantly improve journey times for public transport users. In most areas there will be little impact on people’s
property, however there may be a number of houses effected in Whitethorn in Palmerstown as well as a reduction of green spaces along the Coldcut Rd.”
“I would encourage everyone interested in the project to make a submission. It’s important that both public transport users and residents express their views on this issue. In the interest of the
environment we need increased funding and infrastructure for public transport. The service is currently inadequate for the population in the Dublin Mid West area forcing many to use cars instead of public transport. Many cities in Europe are moving towards free public transport, this is something the Irish Government should consider.”

Speaking on the submission, Deputy Fitzgerald said: “I
have been a loyal supporter of our sports clubs in Dublin Mid-West and have worked closely with many club members and committees in their fundraising efforts. I welcome the proposal for Airlie Park – and in particular, the initial indication that a number of sports will be catered for.
“I am particularly delighted to see plans for a full sized cricket pitch and training facility. I have long-argued that there is a growing demand for cricket infrastructure in the Adamstown area – and have made a number of representations to South
Dublin County Council on behalf of the Adamstown Cricket Club (ACC). Sanjeeb, Olag and the rest of the ACC members have already been recognised with the “Emerging Club of the Year” award at last year’s Leinster Cricket Awards. I am pleased to see that there is a clear effort to recognise their success in this latest development proposal. I have worked closely with the ACC for a number of years will continue to work closely with the club and local councillors to ensure that the proposal is followed through until the first bowl!”

Minister Katherine Zappone and Minister of State Catherine Byrne at the launch in the Plaza Hotel, Tallaght of a new training guide for over 2,000 social and care workers from Tusla the child and family agency and the HSE to help them spot children suffering from Hidden Harm. It is thought up to 600,000 children nationally are being harmed by the actions of addicted parents. Minister Zappone said “Care and social workers are in the front-line in supporting and protecting our children in local communities. It is important that they have access to proper training. This first ever collaboration between Tusla and the HSE is to be welcomed. It will not only ensure our committed care and social workers have access to top class resources, it will also keep children from danger.”
Following on from a public consultation between 13th December 2018 to 14th January 2019, South Dublin County Council (SDCC) has removed a significant number of ramps in Clondalkin estates due to objections from residents. Clondalkin removed locations include Riversdale Road, Cappaghmore and St. Brigid Road. And some of the locations which will go ahead are R120 Main Street, Newcastle Village Bus Cushions, PL Column Broadfield Park
Rathcoole and Ashwood Road Clondalkin. According to Cllr Trevor Gilligan “Proposed locations are subject to funding, please contact me if you would like a full list of areas.” Cllr Gilligan concluded “I welcome the public consultation as a lot of residents were up in arms about the proposals, thinking they were a done deal. SDCC must know allocate funds & resources to this project. Residents in certain areas have been waiting years for these proposals.”

COMMENCEMENT OF LIBRARY DOGS TRUST DELIVERS OVER 28,000 SIGNATURES BUILDING PROGRAMME WELCOMED
In November last year, Dogs Trust launched a poignant campaign entitled “How is that Doggie in the Window?” which highlighted the upsetting reality behind irresponsible dog breeding in Ireland and helped educate the public on how they could affect change. As part of this campaign, the public could take action by signing a petition which asked the Irish government to change the laws, to stop the cruelty that goes on behind closed doors on puppy farms in Ireland. Recently, Dogs Trust sent this petition containing over 28,000 signatures, and counting, to Minister of State Sean Canney, with responsibility for Natural Resources, Community Affairs and Digital Development, calling for him to review and strengthen the Dog Breeding
Establishment (DBE) Act 2010 as a matter of urgency. Executive Director of Dogs Trust, Suzie Carley, handed over the signatures to Fianna Fáil Seanad Group Leader, Senator Catherine Ardagh and Independent TD, Maureen O’Sullivan recently. The amended Act should introduce a number of robust measures to clamp down on unscrupulous breeders that put profits before the welfare of the dogs in their care, including tougher enforcement and prosecution where breeders fail to comply. See Facebook or follow the conversation on twitter @DogsTrust_IE using the hashtag #DoggieInTheWindow or log on to www. dogstrust.ie/doggieinthewindow.
Cllr Charlie O’Connor, has welcomed the commencement of the Building Programme on the new Castletymon Library which is to cost €2.8M. The original Library at Castletymon closed in Dec ‘17 after the Council’s lease on the premises ended. O’Connor has continued to press Council Management for an early start to the Building Programme and he believes that there is strong support in the community for this development. He last raised the matter with Management at the meeting of the Tallaght Area Committee in Dec ‘18 when he also asked for assurances that “everything possible is still being done to provide temporary Library services to the community”. He was told on that occasion that “the contractor
McDermott & Trearty Construction Ltd will commence works on site in early ‘19 and it is anticipated that the building works will take approx. 12 months to complete”. The report added that “library services continue to provide from the mobile library each Thursday outside St Aengus Community Centre from 2pm – 4pm along with other stops in the area outlined on the mobile route. The public continue to request books and other items from other branch libraries, which are distributed locally through the mobile service. Schools and crèches are provided with bulk loans and invited to partake in organized events and activities. Where possible staff visits local schools and crèches, organising storytime and this work will continue for 2019”.
Senator Fintan Warfield has criticised the Government for failing to honour their commitment to hold a referendum on reducing the voting age to 16. Warfield said: “It has been 6 years since the Constitutional Convention recommended that the State should consider reducing the voting age to 16. The previous Government, accepted this recommendation and announced plans to hold a referendum. “In Sept ‘17, the Government reiterated this commitment when it announced an indicative timetable of referenda to be held, including lowering the voting age to 16. “The current Programme for
Government also commits to the holding of a referendum. “The latest announcement by Government that the referendum will not be held in 2019 means that there is no chance of this referendum taking place this term, given that they plan to drag out the self-serving confidence and supply agreement until early next year. “I am extremely disappointed by this. Fine Gael oppose Sinn Féin legislation that would lower the voting age for Local and European Parliament elections, instead promising a referendum to address the voting age in all elections, yet they continually fail to facilitate this referendum.

FORMER O.T LEADER ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO GET FIT IN 2019 Former ‘Operation Transformation’ participant encourages people to get fit in 2019 Sean Daly, Specsavers Clondalkin store manager, has shed more than 6st since his stint on the RTE show in 2017 & he is still inspiring others to follow in his footsteps Clondalkin native Sean explained that taking part in the show not only helped him to lose weight but also to become more confident and comfortable in his own skin. The 27-year-old has worked with Specsavers for five years and said his co-workers have played a huge part in helping him to
stay healthy. Sean said: “It hasn’t all been plain sailing, and it is hard at this time of year to motivate yourself to get into shape and eat well, but that hard work pays off. I wanted to change – I needed to change for my health – and although it is hard, it is definitely worth it, I don’t regret a thing.” Despite his hectic work schedule Sean got right back into a healthier lifestyle from the start of January – after a packed social calendar in December. He said: “I said yes to everything over Christmas, so I started fresh from January. I would encourage anyone who wants to make
that change in their life to start today – don’t wait.” Although he is surrounded by lots of fast food options, picking the healthier choice has become easier over time. Sean said: “My colleagues at Specsavers are very good, they are always asking me have I been to the gym and how my journey is going. Today one of my friends brought in dinner for me because she knew I’d be working late, it really helps to have supportive people around you!” According to the former Operation Transformation leader the key to a healthier lifestyle is preparation and staying
active – Sean makes healthy meals ahead of time so as he is not tempted to splurge. He recommends turkey burgers as a healthy and tasty meal for people trying to improve their eating habits and maintain a balanced lifestyle. He also explained that his newfound confidence has helped in all aspects of his life. He said: “It is a different kind of confidence; I was always the life and soul of the party but underneath that I was very self-conscious, I had no self-esteem at all so Operation Transformation helped a lot with that. It has also helped me be more confident about
dating and sitting down and talking with customers at work. The managerial role at Specsavers has been

CLONDALKIN PANTO SUCCESS
Clondalkin Drama Group have recently wrapped another show, their panto Happily Ever After was a huge success. The group would like to thank their supporters and the community of Clondalkin. A special thanks to Moyle Park and their staff for being a huge help. In May, Clondalkin Drama Group will present their production of Sive by John B. Keane. Set against the harsh poverty and difficult times of 1950s Ireland, Sive caused considerable controversy on its debut in February 1959. Since then it has become an established part of Ireland’s theatrical canon. In a remote area of North Kerry, the play tells the story of the promise in marriage, of the young and beautiful Sive to an old man. late last year but the loss of the centre has still been devastating. “Repairing the extensive damage caused to the premises used by the St Aengus Community Drug Treatment Project is essential not just for those that avail of services at the centre but for the greater Tallaght area as a whole. A lot of people and their families have benefited from the centre and see it as a safe place free from judgement or harm over the years. “As a member of the executive of the Tallaght Drugs and Alcohol Taskforce I’m aware it has extended some much needed support to those working with the St Aengus project. They have worked tremendously hard in difficult circumstances to ensure that at least some of its drug treatment and rehabilitation services could be facilitated in the nearby community centre as a short term measure. “The Chief executive has informed me that insurance assessors have been to the site and the local authority Architects Dept have been
approached to best advise how to approach repairing and/or rebuilding the premises. The centre is a valuable asset and must be quickly
restored to the area. He concluded, “I intend on monitoring this situation very closely and to do all I can to urge the Council to get the centre fully back up and running without delay.

Lottery HQ was a Dublin man who got his weekend off to a flying start by claiming a €500,000 EuroMillions Plus top prize won from the draw on Tuesday 22nd January. The lucky Dub, who bought his winning ticket at the new Circle K service station in Kill, Kildare was oblivious to his massive win until he checked his ticket during his lunch break on Friday afternoon. “I had absolutely no idea,” he smiled. “I was killing a little bit of time during a break from work and I spotted my EuroMillions ticket in my wallet. My heart absolutely stopped when I scanned the ticket on my phone, I hadn’t a clue how much I had won until I called the National Lottery, It’s just an unbelievable start to the weekend. I’ve had to keep it to myself in work but I quietly called my wife who still doesn’t believe. She’ll get some shock when I arrive home with a cheque for a half million euro,” he laughed.
NO SUPPORT FOR LOST PASSPORTS WHEN TRAVELING OUTSIDE THE EU New rules adopted by the European Parliament will make it easier and safer for those who lose their passports, have them stolen or damaged when traveling outside the EU to get temporary documents from any EU Member State’s consulate in a shorter period. These documents will be much safer and will offer protection against fraud and counterfeit. Cllr Emer
Higgins explained, ”Thanks to collaboration between EU Member States’ diplomatic services, a new Directive guarantees that no EU citizen will be refused when in need of a temporary travel document to get to their final destination. This kind of cooperation is crucial for when tourists don’t have a national embassy in the country they’re visiting or
traveling through.” The new temporary traveling document would be valid for a maximum of 15 days and can be used for those who lose their passports in order to travel home. The procedure of verifying applicants’ identity and issuing an emergency travel document for them should take a maximum of 4 days. “Another reason to value our EU membership,” concluded Cllr. Higgins.

BILL TO TACKLE ADVERTS OF UNFIT RENTAL PROPERTIES
Sinn Féin Seanad spokesperson for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Senator Fintan Warfield has launched the Property Services (Advertisement of Unfit Lettings) (Amendment) Bill 2019. The bill seeks to curb the online advertising of unfit rental properties that do not meet legal rental standards, including overcrowding or fire safety regulations. The Bill allows people to report advertisements of unfit rental properties to the Property Services Regulatory Authority.
“It also gives the Authority the power to instruct letting agents and online platforms to remove advertisements of rental properties, that they consider in breach of regulation. Senator Warfield said: “It has become a constant story in traditional and social media outlets when rental properties, posted online in no way meet regulations already in place that ensure
rental properties are fit for purpose. “These rental advertisements range from overcrowded dorm rooms, to apartments that are no more than converted hallways or sheds. “It is astonishing that even after media attention has been brought to these lettings, the advertisement remains online - despite being in clear breach of regulations. “These advertisements only remain due to the rental crisis ongoing in our cities and towns. Despite media attention, advertisers are aware that such lettings may still be rented due to people’s desperation and the extent of the housing crisis. “Letting agents and online platforms have a role to play in ensuring that our rental market is not undermined; that standards are upheld; and that renters can interact with the rental market with dignity and respect. “Websites should not be providing space for the advertisement of rental properties that are in clear breach of regulations.”

2019 THE YEAR TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE
Public consultation on the Local Authority’s plan will get underway shortly Cllr. Charlie O’Connor has said making the South Dublin County region climate resilient must be achieved this year by reducing the impacts of future climate change related events. The local Councillor quizzed the Chief Executive recently on the county’s proposals to deal with the challenge of Climate Change. It has been confirmed to Cllr O’Connor that Public consultation on the council’s Draft Climate Change
Action Plan 2019 - 2024 will take place from Monday, February 11th to Monday, March 25th. He said, “From the very get-go we need to monitor the progress of each of initiatives set out as part of the SDCC Draft Climate Change Action Plan 2019 – 2024. If we have any chance of fulfilling any of the 115 actions included in the plan or meeting the ambitious targets, the general public need to be made fully aware of the significance and importance of being more environmentally
conscious in our day-today lives. “In that respect I am pleased that the Chief Executive has confirmed to me that there will be public information sessions held during February and March.
There are some brilliant efforts already being made in our area to reduce carbon emissions and to introduce better practices for disposing of waste but we need to kick it up a gear once this plan is fully in place. “Decarbonising the council’s fleet of vehicles, increasing the programme for tree planting, delivering
flood alleviation schemes on our main rivers and upgrading the lighting in council owned buildings in a bid to dramatically reduce energy consumption are just three examples of what can do. “If we are to achieve an over 30% reduction in energy efficiency over the next two years and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, we all need to get behind the council and give it our best shot to secure a healthy, prosperous future for the generations after us,” he concluded.

RATHCOOLE COMPANY PREDICTS CONTINUED GROWTH AND JOB CREATION
Rathcoole-based machinery distributor, McHale Plant Sales has predicted a future of sustained growth and continued job creation in the forestry and timber processing sectors. Praising the work being
done by Coillte, Teagasc, the Co-op sector and others to encourage forest development, the company’s director, Michael McHale points to demand for new timber harvesting machinery as proof of the
confidence, investment climate and growth now evident within the industry. In its first full year since being appointed distributor in Ireland for the Komatsu Forest range of timber harvesters and forwarders,
McHale last year recorded double-digit unit sales with forward orders on hand to help ensure even higher levels are achieved this year. Knowing how favourable growing conditions
are in Ireland for the production of timber, McHale recommends that land owners would study the economics of forest planting as an alternative and reliable source of income, especially those with marginal land not wholly suitable for farming, food or dairy production.
With more land going to forestry each year, and increasing evidence of growth and productivity in planting, harvesting and downstream processing through sawmills and enduser product manufacturing, the outlook for forestry and timber production is positive, he said.

TALLAGHT INNOVATION CENTRE CAN BE A GATEWAY Cllr. Charlie O’Connor has Speaking afterwards he said the development of an Enterprise Innovation and Technology Centre to support local SME owners in South Dublin cannot be understated. The Tallaght Innovation Centre could be a gateway for small local businesses. Cllr O’Connor raised the matter with the Local Authority’s Chief Executive recently and received confirmation that the tender for the new Innovation Centre was issued on January 14th and will be open for 3 weeks. It is expected that an appointment for the design of the centre will be made before this Summer with construction potentially commencing by 2020.
said, “Providing locally based SMEs the capabilities and facilities to achieve both growth and profit is essential and should be driven by the Local Authority. By developing a haven where innovation and entrepreneurial spirit are nurtured, we are enabling a brighter future in Tallaght and maybe even beyond. “I am pleased that our Local Authority has recognised the importance of constructing a new Innovation Centre. As we face into uncertain territory post Brexit, promoting indigenous business is crucial. We need to be proactive and push for this project to be completed as soon as is possible,” he concluded.

BUSCONNECTS SEEK ENGAGEMENT OVER IMPACTED PROPERTIES Cllr Sarah Holland has called on residents along the Rathfarnham to city centre bus routes to read the proposals for the Bus Connects routes and engage with the NTA on them. The Cllr. said “The NTA have released information for phase 2 of the project, and it says that 255 houses will be impacted along the route. This could mean a partial front
garden or parking space removal, possibly along the Rathfarnham Road. Public transport solutions are much-needed given the increasing congestion on our roads, but residents need to make sure they are informed and up-to-date on proposals, and to be ready to engage with the NTA.” The NTA have said they have issued letters to all affected homeowners this week, and
they will also be holding a series of public meetings. They also hope to set up a community forum for residents associations and other interested parties.

REBUILDING IRELAND HOME LOANS NOT DELIVERING FOR PURCHASERS
Seán Crowe T.D. has called on the Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy, to reform the Rebuilding Ireland Home Loans scheme after it was revealed that of the 1,317 loans approved in the third quarter of 2018, only 155 have been drawn down, or just 11.8% of those approved. The TD believes the current scheme is not delivering for applicants and highlights a worrying gap in the number of people
a loan product like this is supposedly targeted to help in terms of accessing affordable housing. Deputy Seán Crowe said: “Of the 1,317 Rebuilding Ireland Home Loans approved by the 31 local authorities across the State by the end of Q3 of 2018, only 155 have actually been drawn down, a dismal 11.8%. “If you look at the high demand areas across the four Dublin local
authorities, the ratio of approvals to draw downs is extremely worrying. “In Dublin City Council, 189 loans were approved but only 28 had been drawn down by the end of Q3 of 2018. In Fingal, 185 have been approved, but only 28 have been drawn down during the same timeframe. “In South Dublin, 92 loans have been approved with only nine drawn down and in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown,
LOCAL SPORT CLUBS SCORES WITH BIG FUNDING
Local sports clubs and facilities have scored big in a new round of capital sports funding from Government, according to Dublin South West Independent Minister, Katherine Zappone. Over €167,000 in grants is being provided in Templeogue, Kilnamanagh and Firhouse. Minister Zappone says sport is the lifeblood of our local communities – it improves the quality of life for people of all ages – and needs continued Government support. Welcoming the latest funding Minister Zappone added: “Throughout Dublin South West volunteers, youth leaders and community workers are delivering a wide range of sports and activities which boost health and well-being. This invaluable work needs support and funding. The Government is now backing three important projects. Grasp Martial Arts in Firhouse are receiving a safe sport grant of €4,300. Templeogue
College Swimming Pool is getting €49,500 for new equipment and improvements. While Kilnamanagh AFC gets €114,000 for an all-weather pitch extension. Local people have campaigned hard to secure these grants and I want to congratulate all now that their efforts have successful. There is of course a continued need for further investment. As an Independent Minister I continue to highlight this need and encourage Government to provide more in terms of grants. In Templeogue, Tallaght and Citywest we have access to a wide range of sports facilities and green areas where people can exercise. However this most never be taken for granted and support must continue not just for new infrastructure but also for upgrades and improvements of those which already exist.”
the figures are 38 approved with one drawn down. “In fact, in many local authority areas, zero loans have been drawn down despite approvals for loans being granted in every one of them. Out of the 155 loans drawn down, the average amount is €186,591 with a total of €28.9m drawn down in the 3rd quarter of 2018.” Crowe continued: “The Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan clearly is not working as intended. In high demand areas where the loan amount available
to borrow is higher, the average amount is €207,000. “This is all very well but according to figures from the Daft.ie quarterly house price report, the average house price in these Dublin areas is €379,922. “There is clearly no point in offering a loan product to tackle affordability if the loan on offer comes nowhere near to covering the actual cost of purchasing a home. Where is the borrower to access the €177,000 shortfall? “At
this
stage,
the
Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan is a tokenistic gesture that has done very little to provide affordable homes for people. This is what my party, Sinn Féin, cautioned against when this scheme was initially launched with so much fanfare. “The Government and Minister Murphy need to do more to bring down the cost of homes, making them truly affordable, instead of expecting struggling low to middle income earners to compete in a heated and totally inflated housing market.”

AMYA visits Nursing Homes and SDCC Shop Front Grant Scheme 2019 Gardaí Stations Curran calls on local retailers to apply for Council’s Shop Front Grant Scheme 2019 with grants up to a maximum of €8,500 available. South Dublin County Council this month will launch the Shopfront Grant Scheme for 2019. The scheme is intended to improve the appearance of independently owned shops fronting public streets. Speaking about the launch of the scheme, John Curran T.D.has called on local retailers in the villages of Clondalkin, Lucan, Palmerstown, Rathcoole and Saggart to apply for this
grant. He said: “Grants up to a maximum of €8,500 are available. The Council are committed to paying 50% of the overall cost. Example Grant with overall approved costs of €1,200: SDCC pay €600 - you pay €600. Grants are available for something as simple as painting your shop, replacing signage or even replacing your entire shopfront so it is a very worthwhile grant scheme for local retailers and their business and for our local village’s appearance and the community. Last year Freyne’s Pharmacy in Clondalkin Village won the

FUNDS ALLOCATED TO MEN’S SHED GROUPS
AMYA members pictured with local Gardaí from Clondalkin Garda Station. Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) made visits to Nursing Homes and Gardaí Stations all over Ireland as part of seasonal celebrations. The AMYA, an auxiliary of AMA, comprises of youths between the age of 15-40 years of age. In their efforts of integration and demonstration of their respect, loyalty, commitment and gratitude toward the community, the youths of AMYA present gifts, seasonal greetings and moral support to the staff and residence of Nursing Homes and Gardai Station on an annual basis.
Locally those visited were Clondalkin Garda Station, Lucan Garda Station and Griffeen Valley Nursing Home in Lucan. The residents and staff of each of these establishments were presented with chocolates, biscuits, flowers, seasonal greetings cards and an introduction to the AMA activities, goals, beliefs and history. AMYA hope to carry on the tradition of visiting Nursing Homes and Gardaí Station across the island of Ireland and broaden the range of people and establishments we visit.
Frances Fitzgerald T.D., has welcomed the Department for Rural and Community Development’s decision to allocate just under €18,000 in grants to Men’s Shed Groups in South Dublin.
Following the allocation of the funding to each Local Authority area last July, an application process was then overseen by Local Community Development Committees around the country. Commenting on the news, Deputy Fitzgerald said: “I am delighted to confirm that my colleague, Minister Ring, has allocated funding to nine Men’s Sheds across South Dublin. “I am particularly pleased to confirm
that Lucan Men’s Shed and Clondalkin Men’s Shed – both in my own constituency of Dublin Mid-West – were awarded €2,500 and €1,530 respectively. “Men’s Sheds are a valuable facility. In recent years they have become a fixture of life in towns and villages throughout Ireland. They offer a safe, comfortable and inclusive environment where men of all ages can share skills, work on meaningful projects and connect with their communities. “I welcome the Department’s decision and look forward to continuing my support of these important local amenities.”

In this edition of the paper, Romaine Scally Solicitor deals with Accidents in the Workplace. Q. I have worked with my present Employer for over 12 years. I work in a very noisy environment and now find that my hearing has been affected. I think that this could be directly related to my working environment. Is there anything I can do? A. The Noise at Work Regulations in Ireland state that Employers are obliged to provide Employees with the correct protective equipment to prevent injury or illness. Therefore, if you feel that you have been the victim of hearing problems due to Industrial Deafness, it is possible that your employer is at fault. There are a variety of working environments that can cause or contribute towards hearing loss with some of the most common including a) factories, b) building sites, c) nightclubs and bars, d) military service, e) transport workers i.e. planes and trains. Employees who work in noisy working environments, such as the ones described above, will be at risk of suffering from Industrial Deafness. Because this is a known risk, their Employers should do everything in their power to reduce the possibility of hearing damage. This should include providing ear protectors and minimising the level of exposure as far as possible. This is all part and parcel of an Employer’s duty of care which means that he or she must look after the Health & Safety of staff while they are at work. If your Employer does not meet this obligation, and you have been the victim of a hearing problem because of your workplace then, you will have been wrongfully injured. This means that you may be in a position to make a deafness claim against your Employer. You will however need to go to your doctor first and arrange for him or her to have you referred to a specialist in hearing problems. The Specialist should be briefed by you in relation to your working environment and should hopefully be able to make an assessment as to the cause of your deafness. With this information, you should be in a positon to properly brief a Solicitor in relation to a possible claim against your Employer. We wish you the best of luck in this regard. Q. I fell off scaffolding at work recently and spent a week in hospital. My Employer has been paying me while I am out of work and I hope to be able to go back to work within the next two months. I am wondering however whether I might have a claim. A. This was a most unfortunate accident and in many cases, unnecessary. Certainly the Building Industry can be a dangerous environment for both workers and the public. Scaffolding accidents have an impact on a variety of trades such as bricklayers, electricians, painters and miners. The Health & Safety Executive has found that 72% of employees who suffer from scaffolding accidents said that it was due to planking giving way, slipping or being struck by a falling object. Members of the public can also be harmed by falling object. However, Employers must ensure that their staff and members of the public are protected against the threat of the scaffolding accident. There is a legal duty to provide Employees with hard hats and other personal protective equipment, keeping walkways free from obstacles and ensuring that everyone on site has the necessary training. Unfortunately however, some Employers do not comply with the necessary regulations, putting their Employees at risk. If an accident subsequently occurs, and a member of staff sustained an injury as a result of those breaches then, the Employer will be held responsible. In those circumstances, you will be able to claim compensation for the injuries you have wrongfully experienced. Scaffolding accidents can often lead to serious damage as it is often the case that Employees have fallen from a height. There can be long-term financial problems for Employees in these situations and it is very important to take legal advice early. Very often, these scaffolding compensation claims occur due to insecure bracing, poor construction materials and lack of attention to safety procedures. However, this list is not exhaustive and it is important to arrange a consultation with a Solicitor as soon as you are well enough to describe your working environment and prepare a case for compensation. We wish you the best of luck in this regard.

MOTORING LIFE WITH NEW MAZDA6 SALOON – REDEFINING EXPECTATIONS. By Breda Corrigan Brilliant to drive, strikingly mature and stunningly beautiful to look at, the new Mazda6 Saloon makes a stylish statement in town, on business trips and on long drives. Built inside and out with fine craftsmanship, next generation technology and highly refined KODO – Soul of Motion Design, the new Mazda6 Saloon redefines the meaning of quality and refinement. Occupants can simply sit back and relax in the breathtaking new human-centric interior. With its dynamic new design and low profile, the car’s expression is pure elegance. Driving has never been more relaxed or enjoyable, thanks to Mazda’s latest i-ACTIVSENSE safety systems. Mazda’s aim with the new Mazda6 was to give the driver an exhilarating sensation of being in total control of the car in all conditions, adding a higher level of driving confidence. New advanced technologies have been introduced into the latest SKYACTIV engines that deliver a quicker, more accurate response to your true driving intentions as you press the accelerator. Having earned an enviable reputation as being one of the best saloons to drive outside of the Audi, BMW and MercedesBenz premium benchmarks, the new Mazda6 is worthy of serious consideration by motorists looking for sporty, spacious and stylish family transport. Rivals to the new Mazda6 include the Ford Mondeo, VW Passat, Opel Insignia Grand Sport, new Peugeot 508, Honda Civic Saloon, Kia Optima and Hyundai i40. Externally, the new Mazda6 gets a new front grille, which is deeper set and shinier than before with a new mesh, while updated headlights surrounded by a bit more chrome appear too. A few minor changes appear at the back in the form of a subtly redesigned rear bumper and boot lid, but the big news with the new Mazda6 is found in the cabin and under the bonnet – the interior has been tastefully refreshed, while the latest SKYACTIV-G 2.0 (petrol) and SKYACTIV-D 2.2 (diesel) engines deliver responsive power and a feeling of confidence that there is more in reserve if you need it. Press the accelerator and the new Mazda6 will pull
away smoothly, matched to the pressure you apply, giving you exactly the power you desire. The SKYACTIV-G petrol engine in the new Mazda6 is available in two states of tune – 145bhp and 165bhp, while the SKYACTIV-D diesel engine is available with either 150bhp or 184bhp. Gearbox choices consist of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic, while all models are front wheel drive. Although the model I am reviewing is a four-door saloon, the new Mazda6 is also available in a cavernous Tourer (estate) body style. Four trim levels are available – Executive SE, Executive SE with Leather Pack, Platinum and, range-topping, Platinum +. My test car was a new Mazda 6 ‘Platinum’ 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D (Diesel) 150bhp 6-speed manual, finished in stylish Machine Grey metallic paint. Standard specification across the entire Mazda6 range is impressive, with the Platinum model I drove equipped with features such as Bluetooth™ with Mazda MZD Connect, stone leather interior, electrically adjustable & heated front seats, dual zone climate control, adaptive front lighting system with high beam control, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Smart Brake Control, signature LED daytime running lights, keyless entry & start, rear camera, front & rear parking sensors, alarm, immobilizer, leather multifunction steering wheel, heated autofolding door mirrors, Dynamic Stability Control with Traction Control System, Lane Keep Assist, Emergency Brake Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, BOSE™ sound system with 11 speakers, 19” alloy wheels with a machined surface, hill hold assist, rear privacy glass, auto lights, auto wipers, tyre pressure monitoring system, integrated satellite navigation, WindscreenProjected Active Driving Display, traffic sign recognition and an electronic handbrake, along with many other comfort, safety and convenience features. Mazda has revised the steering and suspension on the 6 Saloon in a bid to keep it at the front of the pack for driving fun. Accomplished, sharp steering makes driving
the car around bends a joy, while there is a real fluency to the way the car travels down motorways and back roads too. Powerful brakes ensure that the new Mazda6 stops as effectively as it accelerates, while the cars overall driving dynamics are faultless. My test car returned fuel consumption as low as 5.6l/100km on a combined driving cycle, while annual road tax is just €200. The cabin of the new Mazda6 is a very pleasant place to be. A redesign of the centre console layout results in a decluttered atmosphere. The use of high quality materials make the new Mazda6 feel premium-like, while solid build quality is evident throughout. All occupants will appreciate the ample leg, shoulder and head room on offer, while 480 litres of
space in the boot is impressive. This space can be greatly, and easily, extended by dropping the split-folding rear seat rests. Thanks in no small part to an outstanding level of safety equipment, the new Mazda6 has achieved a maximum 5-star Euro NCAP rating for definitive peace of mind driving. Pricing for the new Mazda6 starts at just €31,945 (ex-works), while my Platinum test car specification is priced from €40,595 (ex-works). A 3-year/100,000km warranty comes as standard, as does a 3-year European roadside assistance package. Overall, the new Mazda6 really does redefine expectations, and offers the ultimate in refinement. When you drive a Mazda, you never drive alone, as the car and driver are always in perfect harmony.
