DELAY ON ADDITIONAL HOSPITAL BEDS IS INEXCUSABLE Dublin South West TD, Seán Crowe, has said it is inexcusable and unacceptable that it has taken the Minister for Health over two years to ask the HSE to examine if there is any additional capacity in hospitals that can be utilised.

Deputy Seán Crowe said: “For over two years now, Sinn Féin representatives and other stakeholders, including the Irish Nurses and Midwives

Organisation (INMO), have been asking the Minister for Health to examine what beds had been closed in hospitals during the austerity years and to commit funding to reopen them. “On countless occasions, we were told to wait on the publication of the bed capacity review. However, when the long awaited review was eventually published, it did not even try to fully

examine what beds were closed, where they were closed, and how many are actually closed.

“While welcoming the Minister’s announcement this week that he will now ask the HSE to examine if there is any additional capacity in hospitals that can be utilised, the question many of us who are concerned about this issue are asking is why it has taken him over

two years to do this.

“The fact it has taken over two years for this action to be taken by Minister Harris speaks volumes about this Government’s utter lack of urgency in resolving the waiting list and Emergency Department trolley crises. Staff and patients continue to suffer while lame excuses are trotted out by Government spokespersons. This lengthy delay, in what is clearly a crisis, is inexcusable. “The HSE, under the direction of the Minister are not prepared for the challenges that this coming winter will bring. The current service is overstretched and we are only in the month of August. “There is clear evidence that Tallaght University Hospital will have to increase the capacity of its adult emergency services in order to cope with a growing and ageing catchment population. It will have to expand its

ACTION NEEDED TO IMPROVE UNSAFE CYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE IN DUBLIN

John Lahart TD said more needs to be done to ensure the safety of cyclists using roads in and around the Capital. Recently, Fianna Fail launched its policy aimed at greatly increasing participation in cycling in Ireland.

“As cycling has become more and more popular in the city, the situation for cyclists in Dublin continues

to worsen. The Government’s has offered little or no support to cycling in the Capital, especially in recent years when State spending on cycling infrastructure has hit a new low,” Lahart said. “As a result, Dublin’s cycling infrastructure remains dangerously weak. It’s little wonder why accidents and fatalities involving cyclists continue to occur on our streets so

often. “We have come forward and proposed a number of measures to improve our existing cycling network to make it safer and more appealing to cycle on our cities roads. “These include; the availability of physically segregated cycle lanes, the establishment of a Specialist Cycling Division within the National Transport Authority, rollout of ample bike storage facilities on public transport and near public transport hubs and the expansion of bike sharing schemes into Dublin suburbs. He added, “Cyclists are forced to share bus lanes

and cross dangerous intersections with insufficient distance from larger vehicles when commuting around the city. “Increasing the safety of cycling is critical in order to allow more people to commute by bike safe in the knowledge that they are better protected. “Strengthening the city’s cycling infrastructure needs to be pushed higher up this Government’s agenda. Fianna Fáil recognises that more attention and more resources are urgently required to ensure that there is sufficient infrastructure in place to protect cyclists; it’s about time this Government acknowledged the same.”

RATHCOOLE WILL HOST SOUTH DUBLIN’S FIRST EVER TEENFEST

“Rachel Boggans and her committee have turned her daughter’s idea of a teen day into nothing short of a festival. With everything from a DJ to a Quiet Room, inflatable obstacle courses to art workshops and make up classes, the event for over 12s promises to offer something for everyone,” said Cllr. Emer Higgins who is helping to organise the day.

“Teenfest will hear from guest speakers Nikki Bradley on positive mental attitude, Kickstart on fitness and my colleague and Olympic champion Councillor Kenneth Egan on takling addition challenges. Ireland’s Got Talent finalist Affia will be making a

special appearance along with some of the Shamrock Rovers team. KPH and Equita are sponsoring the event and we’re so grateful for their support. The underlying theme is mental wellness and we’ll have charities working in this area there. We are especially delighted to be planting a Tree if Hope on the day thank to Anne O’Riordans efforts. If you have teenage kids, neices or newphews please encourage them to check us out on social media. It promises to be a great day hosted by Tricia and her team in the Rathcoole Community Centre,” concluded Cllr. Emer Higgins.

VACANT CONSULTANT POSTS PUTTING LIVES IN DANGER

Seán Crowe T.D., has expressed his serious concern at the number of vacancies for consultant posts in Tallaght University Hospital and said it is causing lengthy delays that are putting lives at risk. The Sinn Féin TD’s concerns follow the publication of figures released through a Dáil question which revealed that there are 349 vacant consultant posts in hospitals across the State, and 9 of them are in Tallaght. Deputy Seán Crowe said:

“Sinn Féin, hospital consultants and their representatives, and other interest groups have been stating for some time that there is a recruitment and retention crisis within the health service.

“The figures released following a parliamentary question confirm that this is a real live issue that affects every hospital right across the State. “According to the figures there are at least 349 vacant consultant posts in

hospitals. In some areas the number involved is at crisis level. It is impacting negatively on patient waiting lists, on patients’ health, and on other staff within the hospital system. It is also causing delays in accessing treatment which in turn is putting patients’ lives at risk “Tallaght University Hospital is among the better resourced but nonetheless waiting lists for some specialties are breaking records, while 9 vacant consultant posts remain vacant. “All of these impact on essential health services provided in Tallaght. There is 1 consultant less than the number required covering each of the speciality services of Dermatology, Anaesthesia, Immunology, and Psychiatry.

Otolaryngology is short 2 consultants, while 3 posts remain vacant in Paediatrics. “The HSE has tried to paper over some of the cracks by employing doctors not on the specialist register as consultants and employing locum/agency consultants, but short term solutions are clearly not delivering for patients as lists are getting longer and many having to travel abroad for care. “The Minister for Health, Simon Harris, needs to urgently address the recruitment and retention crisis regarding consultants and other key staff. I am calling on the Minister and the HSE to urgently engage with representatives of the consultants and draw up a fully resourced and worked out plan to fill these empty posts.”

CRIPPLING BACK TO SCHOOL COSTS PUTTING FAMILIES INTO DEBT

Seán Crowe T.D. has called on the Minister for Education, Richard Bruton, to do more to tackle the rising back to school costs for families. The Sinn Féin TD’s comments come after the release of the annual Irish League of Credit Union (ILCU) school survey which revealed that one-third of those surveyed were getting into debt to meet rising back to school costs.

Teachta Seán Crowe said: “This year the ILCU’s ‘School Costs Survey’

revealed that a whopping one-third of parents surveyed are getting into debt to meet back to school costs. This is a significant and alarming rise in the number of parents facing this challenge. “Worryingly the report also shows increasing numbers of families are turning to legal and illegal moneylenders in an effort to cope with unmanageable back to school costs.

“Updated and new curriculum books, school uniforms, shoes, writing materials, journals and voluntary contributions all add up.

“The survey suggests that the average back to school cost for a single primary school child is now €999 and €1379 for a child in secondary school. “Families can often find these costs further compounded by other rises in the costs of living. “Increasingly for many parents this time of year is one of worry and stress, as they face the prospect of the challenging costs associated with children returning to school in September. “In addition many families on lower incomes are still waiting on confirmation or receipt of the Back to School Allowance.” Crowe continued: “Back to school costs have unfortunately become an annual conversation in many Irish homes and this is set to continue until the Government implements positive

and proactive supports for struggling families. The conversation shouldn’t end in September when the students return to school. “Budget 2019 affords the opportunity to do this and I am calling on Minister Bruton to increase the Back to School Clothing and Footwear allowance for both primary and secondary School children in the budget. “It is unacceptable that families have to go into debt solely to meet the costs of sending their children to school. This can and does involve legal and illegal moneylenders who charge huge exorbitant rates on return. “The annual ILCU survey reinforces the hidden picture of Ireland in which people are increasingly going into debt, back to school costs are rising and the financial burden from the recession and Government imposed austerity is still impacting on many our citizens.”

APPEAL OF CLONBURRIS SDZ LODGED

All four of our Dublin Mid West Fine Gael Councillors, Kenneth Egan, Vicki Casserly, William Lavelle and General Election Candidate Emer Higgins, have appealed the Clonburris Strategic Development Zone Plan. “Topics of concern for many of us locally include housing and phasing, integration, transport and traffic, and amenities. We have appealed the planning scheme in the hope that these concerns can be addressed in the next version of the Plan which will deliver muchneeded homes in Dublin,” said Cllr. Emer Higgins, leader of Fine Gael on South Dublin County Council.

BUS CONNECTS REPRESENTS CHANGE BUT VIEWS OF TALLAGHT RESIDENTS MUST BE HEARD

Local Councillor urges locals to make submissions to NTA Cllr. Charlie O’Connor has said that while changes are needed in the provision of Dublin Bus services across the city and county, any new plan must feature input from those that use the public transport service. He was commenting after attending the recent public information session which was held in the Square, Tallaght. “It is hugely important that the people of Tallaght and surrounding areas such as Firhouse and Citywest are given an opportunity to air their concerns about the proposed changes to bus routes,” said local Councillor, Charlie O’Connor. “There debate

has been much and discussion

about the recent proposals to change and augment the Dublin Bus network, particularly in Dublin South West. “Public bus services in Dublin are in dire need of improvement but it’s essential that local commuters, who are directly affected, have their say on these proposed changes. “Thousands of people living in our locality rely on a quality bus service to get to work, school, local shops, to the hospital or to go about their daily lives. I urge these residents to examine the proposed plans and make formal submissions to the Bus Connects consultation by email to: c o n s u l t a t i o n s @ nationaltransport.ie,” he concluded.

CHILDCARE NEEDS REFORM, NOT HALF-BAKED ‘GRANNY GRANT’ PROPOSAL

Seán Crowe T.D. has described a proposal by Minister Shane Ross for a grant for grandparents who take care for their grandchildren, as a halfbaked election gimmick

“Instead they appear to be looking at half-baked election gimmicks that may be popular with some grandparents but will do nothing to resolve the crisis in childcare.

The Sinn Féin TD said he would be better spending his time coming up with workable proposals that would relieve the burden on families’ childcare costs.

“Everyone recognizes the increasing and important role that many grandparents play in caring for grandchildren, but this crude giveaway proposal will not resolve the childcare crisis or make it more manageable for their children.”

Deputy Seán Crowe said: “Childcare costs are at an all-time high, with many hard pressed parents paying the equivalent of a second mortgage in crèche fees.

“Minister Ross and his Independent Alliance have suggested giving a grant to grandparents which would cost taxpayers a whopping €70 million. “Surely their time would be better spent on bringing forward workable proposals that will effectively bring costs down so that every parent who wishes to avail of childcare can do so.

Crowe continued: “ U n f o r t u n a t e l y decades of Government underinvestment in early year’s services have led us as a society to where we are now paying astronomical figures for childcare. “Sinn Féin’s alternative Budget for last year was fully-costed and set out proposals that would half the cost of childcare for families. A key component of that was through significant increases in the

Universal Childcare Subsidy. “According to Shane Ross, his so-called ‘Granny Grant’ would cost €70 million. In comparison, based on last year’s figures from the Department of Finance, it would cost €116 million to cut the cost of childcare by half, through an increase of the Universal Childcare Subsidy of €2 per hour.

“The proposal by the Independent Alliance seems to be more about the next election than about any real attempt to reform our childcare system and bring about a system that is affordable to parents. “Surely the way forward is to adopt the Sinn Féin model and cut the costs for parents by half.”

NO LIMITS CREATORS WIN SAGE WORLD CUP 2018 Three teenagers from St Joseph’s College, Lucan, Co. Dublin have taken the Gold Award at the SAGE World Cup 2018 (Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship), taking place in Durban, South Africa in the Socially Responsible Business category for their enterprise creating and publishing children’s books that feature a hero/heroine with a disability. Delegations from 15 countries, including two from Ireland, travelled to South Africa to compete in the prestigious competition. The innovative all-girl team has already produced three original illustrated story books which promote their important message of inclusion. Through these stories, they are challenging what they see as the lack of representation of those with disabilities in children’s literature. This is a meaningful issue for the team who have personal experience of loved ones one with a disability who have faced discrimination.

When developing their enterprising idea, the team liaised with organisations including Barretstown, Enable Ireland, Blossom Ireland, The Irish Wheelchair Association, Epilepsy Ireland and Down Syndrome Ireland. A percentage of the income generated from the sales of the books is donated to the particular charity that represents those with the highlighted disability. The teenagers, who developed their enterprise through Young Social Innovators (YSI), have won a number of previous YSI Awards including the overall Silver Award at the Young Social Innovators of the Year Ireland Awards in 2017. They have also accessed financial support through YSI’s Social Innovation Fund which was created to support young people sustain and develop socially innovative ideas. As the national Coordinating Host for the SAGE World Cup, YSI chose this team to represent Ireland at this year’s competition.

It is the second time that Ireland has taken the Gold Award in this category. Speaking after the award announcement Aoife Dardis, a member of the winning team said, “We are so proud to represent Ireland at the SAGE World Cup and are delighted to be bringing home the Gold Award. We believe we are making a real difference and are looking forward to developing our project throughout Ireland and beyond. We’d like to thank everyone in YSI for their continued support and our fantastic teachers and YSI Guides Wendy Bould and Keith Walsh who have helped us every step of the way.” Ireland was also represented at this year’s World Cup by a team from Largy College, Clones, Co. Monaghan. The YSI All-Ireland Gold Winners 2017 competed with their initiative project aiming to remove the stigma around mental health. Their viral videos have already reached over 2 million people. Rachel Collier, CEO and co-founder, YSI, said,

“Competitions like these demonstrate the immense power that teenagers have to be innovative. These young people have a real grasp on human, societal and environmental issues, as seen here in South Africa and indeed through our

own work with thousands of young people each year in Ireland. Nurturing this creativity through our education system is vital to creating resilient and entrepreneurial young people equipped with the skills to meet the many

challenges facing us in a rapidly changing world. Watching these YSI students excel on a global stage makes me extremely proud and I congratulate them, their teachers and their Principal on their wonderful achievement.”

MCHALE HOSTS APPRENTICESHIP SEMINAR A day-long seminar for those considering an apprenticeship in the construction plant and machinery sector is being organised by Komatsu distributor, McHale Plant Sales at its offices on Greenogue Industrial Estate, Rathcoole on a date yet to be finalised in lateSeptember/early October. Free to participants, the programme will comprise a mixture of conference-room presentations covering all key areas of the industry, and an opportunity to view machines close-up and see the technology now being employed in their design and construction demonstrated. An introduction to the training programmes, career opportunities and salary structures that apprentices might reasonably expect will be given. Described by company director, Michael McHale as: “a logical follow-on to our ‘Career Choices in the Construction Plant and Equipment Industry’ guide, published on the company’s website”, the proposed

seminar is intended as a direct response to what he says is: “a situation now developing in the heavy plant sector”. “This will see recruitment opportunities arising for those with the skills required to service the increasing use of ‘intelligent technology’ in the operation, security and work-management functions of heavy construction machinery such as excavators, dozers, graders and loaders,” he said.

As an initial measure, McHale Plant Sales is now inviting expressions of interest via the Contact Page on its website www. mchaleplantsales.com to be received by 31st August next under the subject line ‘Apprenticeship Seminar’. Replies will be sent to each applicant individually, including details of the programme and the advice that numbers will be limited due to conference room space and other restrictions.

EDUCATION FROM A DISTANCE WITH ‘REAL ALTERNATIVES’ FOR STUDENTS

Speaking about the alternatives for learners in Ireland, Joe Walsh, CEO of The Open College, assures students that there is a “real alternative to the big universities and courses available in Ireland that translate into real jobs both here and Internationally”. “Results are dominated by stories about who got the most H1s and the inevitable preoccupation with the CAO. This is extremely frustrating for students who have not gained enough points or who are looking to pursue a different path, and in many cases wish to combine Further Education and entering the workforce” said Mr. Walsh. The Open College offers more flexibility and choice to its prospective students than any other private college in Ireland. This independent private college offers over 90 QQI (formally FETAC) approved level 5 and 6 courses to thousands of students in a variety of formats. Modern living is a delicate balancing act between work, family and social time off. At the same time we are encouraged to develop a positive attitude towards the concept of lifelong learning, without any real advice being given on how we are supposed to add

another juggling ball into our lives. So, if you’re looking to tailor a training programme around your life - rather than the other way around - The Open College is for you.

Traditional taught programmes where attendance is required, blended learning and their renowned distance learning and e-learning programmes, are all available. In this way the student is empowered with options for independent study, informal learning and varied communication channels including one to one tutor support. While QQI do offer some general interest courses, most of The Open College’s programmes are designed with up skilling and practical training in mind. Business, Healthcare, Childcare, Digital Marketing, Management, Law, Journalism, Sports and Special Needs are just some of the areas covered, plus all courses are designed and constantly maintained by leading educational experts to ensure they are up to date technically, culturally and from a legislative perspective. “Also not gaining the correct points in the CAO application process is not the end for students who wish to gain a third level qualifications either. QQI

Level 5 & 6 Major awards can be also used to progress to Third Level Degree courses under the QQI Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS), so there are still plenty of alternatives available.” For more information on courses and programme advice you can contact The Open College at:

The Learning Centre, Leopardstown Business Centre, Ballyogan Road, Dublin 18. Tel: + 353 (1) 206 1828 or 01 206 1829 – Our advice lines are open Monday to Friday from 8.30am - 5.30pm. email: info@theopencollege.com web: www.theopencollege.com

College Choice – A Different Pathway with BIFE?

For people seeking to pursue their dream career, the comprehensive range

of courses available at Bray Institute of Further Education provides an

excellent opportunity to advance one’s qualifications and employment potential.

“Further Education offers a learner who may not have achieved the CAO

points that they required, the opportunity to gain advanced entry onto honours degree programmes, both in Ireland and abroad. It is also a very supportive route for the mature student,” said Gabriel Allen, deputy principal at Bray Institute of Further Education (BIFE). “Many of our students” he said “who complete a oneyear level 6 programme have been successful in gaining advanced entry to year 2 of a relevant degree programme in The Institutes of Technology. For example, if a student wanted to study Business Management in DIT (DT324) but did not get enough points in the Leaving Certificate (350 in 2016), they could do a one-year post-Leaving Cert (PLC) level 6 course in Management (6M4587) in Bray Institute of Further Education and gain direct entry into the second year of that same degree in DIT. “Over recent years our graduates have achieved honours degrees in graphic design, fashion design, film & tv (moving image), acting for film & tv, dance performance & Choreography, fine arts, psychology, social science, health and social care and music production. This year BIFE will offer higher national diplomas (HND) in Fine Art, Acting for Theatre & Film, Dance, TV & Film (Moving Image), Music Production, Music Performance, Graphic Design, Fashion Design and Applied Social Studies.

The HND is equivalent to a foundation degree and on completion students may proceed to one of our link universities for a further single year of study in order to gain their Honours Degree. Many of last year’s graduating students proceeded to the final year of an honours Degree Programme in Ireland or Britain,” said Allen. “With the upturn in the economy our morning

Accounting Technician course is proving to be very popular. “This two-year course allows BIFE students to proceed to the 3rd year of the Bachelor of Business in Accounting Course (TA111) in IT Tallaght.” Other morning courses include Nail Technology & Salon Management, Holistic & Wellbeing Studies and Medical Administration.” “There are many opportunities for mature students such as the ‘IT Skills with Digital Marketing’ course, and other IT courses for those who want to break into the world of paid employment,” said Allen. BIFE constantly updates and introduces new programmes in response to student demand and workplace opportunities. Bray Institute will offer a number of new courses in September: • Hairdressing Junior Stylist Level 5

-

• Hairdressing Senior Stylist Level 6

• Barbering Level 5 • Architectural Technology with Revit Level 6 • Tourism, Restaurant Level 5 • Occupational Assistant Level 5

Hotel & Operations Therapy

• Nutrition & Food Science Level 5 All of the above courses will offer progression routes to higher education. Yet you don’t need CAO points to study at Bray Institute. To discover more about the courses available at BIFE, prospective students are invited to attend an ‘Open Day’ on Friday 24th August from 10am to 4pm. For more information or to apply for courses, call the Institute during office hours on 01-2829668 or log on to www.bife.ie and apply online.

TONNES OF WASTE ELECTRICAL GOODS RECYCLED YEARLY IN SOUTH DUBLIN BY RECYCLE IT Throughout 2017 Recycle IT in conjunction with WEEE Ireland and South Dublin County Council organised free “door to door electrical recycling days across Dublin.

ROBUST AND AMBITIOUS INVESTMENT IN SPORT NEEDED

Seán Crowe T.D. has called on the Government to match its praise of Ireland’s sporting stars with robust and ambitious investment in sport at all levels. Deputy Seán Crowe:

“The last couple of weeks have seen some wonderful Irish sporting successes. The performance of the Irish hockey team and their silver medal success captured the hearts of everyone and they have become a really positive role model for young people, particularly girls and women. “We have also watched some heart stopping hurling and some fantastic football matches. In the World U20 Athletics Championships Sommer Lecky won silver in the high jump and another silver was secured in the 4x100m relay, and in the U18 European Athletics Championships Rhasidat Adeleke from Tallaght won gold in the 200m, Sarah

Healy won gold in both the 1500m and 3000m, and Sophie O’Sullivan claimed silver in the 800m.

“The European Athletic Championships are currently taking place in Berlin and a range of other championships are taking place in Glasgow. Shane Ryan has already won a bronze medal for Ireland in the 50m backstroke, the O’Donovan brothers won silver medals in the Lightweight Double Sculls rowing, and there are genuine hopes for some medals on the track. “These athletes are competing for their country abroad at such a high level, but unfortunately many of them are given too little financial support from the Government and many have to self-fund to attend training camps and events abroad. However Ministers always seem to be close by for the photos when

athletes return home with medals. “Minister Ross’ announcement in Dublin Castle at the homecoming for the hockey team of €1.5 million of extra funding for the forthcoming Olympics was welcome, but it didn’t impress many in the large crowd who were only too aware of his Department’s lack of generosity when it came to funding this hockey team’s considerable world cup costs. “What we now need is significant investment in sport and exercise in Ireland, from a grassroots level and a focus on wider participation, to funding of our elite athletes. “Clearly the lesson Minister Ross needs to take from the last is that sport in Ireland, and all our elite sportsmen and sportswomen, need year round support and commitment from the Government, not a one day appearance from the Minister for Sport.”

collected or dropped off for recycling in Clondalkin which is the equivalent of 300 truckloads of mixed electrical items or 660,000 electric kettles. For 2018 there are several options available from Recycle IT to recycle your old electrical and electronic equipment. These include; • Householders can bring their old or unused electrical or electronic items to Recycle IT in Clondalkin for free. • Community collections are offered free across Dublin through the year with householders notified in advance of the collection day for their area. • Residents Associations can arrange a free collection event for their estate or road. • Assisted collections are offered free to people requiring help with lifting or moving electrical items from their homes, gardens or shed.

• Schools, charities and community groups can recycle all dual-purpose home and small office electrical and electronic equipment using a free collection or drop off. • Organisations of all sizes can arrange a free “WEEE to Work” collection which allows staff to bring electrical items from home. All dual-purpose electrical items from the office can also be included! • Cost effective personal and business collections can be arranged for those with an immediate electrical recycling need. In this edition of the paper, Romaine Scally, Principal in the Firm of Romaine Scally and Co, Solicitors, deals with various legal matters. As always please send your queries to Romaine Scally, Solicitors, Main Street, Tallaght Village, Dublin 24. Telephone 4599506, Email – legal@scally.ie Question – We are one of a family of six. Our mother died many years ago and our father died six months ago now. In his last Will, he appointed our eldest brother as the only Executor and directed that the former family home was to be sold and his entire estate to be divided between all his children. Our bother has now announced that he intends to buy the property for himself. We are not happy about this as he has not obtained any valuation of the property. He says that once our father directed that the house was to be sold, as the Executor, he can have first refusal on buying the property. Is he correct? A – Without seeing the Will, it is difficult to be specific in relation to your queries. However, assuming that your father merely directed that the house was to be sold and everything divided equally between his children then, your brother was not given first refusal to buy the house out from his siblings. It does happen in certain cases where a parent gives one or more family members the option to buy out their siblings to be exercisable within a certain period of time of their death. However, assuming that your father had no such clause in his Will then, your brother is incorrect when he says that he is entitled to buy the house himself. It may be that you could all come to an agreement with your brother regarding the market value of the property and allow him to buy you out under certain conditions. However, if any of you disagree with your brother buying out his siblings then, you can make this clear and direct the Executor to carry out your late father’s wishes and sell the property on the open market. There is nothing to stop your brother buying the property on the open market once it is processed through a firm of auctioneers. We suggest that you try to talk to your brother and explain this to him and if he is resistant to such explanations, you will need to consult with a solicitor and arrange for him or her to write directly to your brother or any solicitors appointed on his behalf and make it clear that you will not tolerate him buying our his siblings against their wishes. We wish you the best of luck.

SLIMMING WORLD ROWLAGH CELEBRATES WOMEN OF THE YEAR On August 7th, Paula Mc Loughlin celebrated Slimming World Rowlagh’s first birthday and made a presentation to the group’s women of the year. Woman of the Year at Slimming World is all about acknowledging the achievements of members. Each nominee speaks about their journeys and with the support of Paula and group, they learn how to make small changes that bring amazing results. Consultant Paula, who lost 5 stone herself added “Weight losses are fantastic rewards in themselves but when you decide to make lifestyle changes the rewards just keep coming including increased confidence levels, higher self esteem, as well as the many health benefits and this was clear to see in all of this years nominees”. Nominee Avril who lost 3 and a half stone in just 19

weeks commented that “I love the freedom of the plan and joining the gym”. The group thanked Avril for her ongoing support and constant encouragement on the groups Facebook page. The private page is for members and is a goldmine of food ideas and motivation. Another member Anita spoke of learning to believe in herself and losing weight while tackling her own health and added “everyday I fight my body, but I’m winning”. The night switched from tears to laughter and stories of happy shopping trips and the joy of asking for smaller sizes in shops. Another nominee for the title, a busy man to 6 children, Samantha is the perfect example of how the slimming world plan can fit into your everyday life. Meals are enjoyed by all the family and Sam has lost just

under 5 stone in 10 months. As amazing as all the nominees were and as much as each story gave such inspiration and motivation there could only be one winner in each group. The 5.30pm group crowned Anita their woman of the year. In 1 year, Anita attended every single session, celebrated fab weeks and worked hard through the tough weeks. Paula added “Anita is the perfect example of working hard to get what you want, always there with a welcoming chat and is the root of the groups walking group”. Mary was awarded the 7.30pm groups woman of the year, 3 lbs shy of her 6 stone award Mary told of her love of the eating plan and her latest hobby horse riding. Mary said “I’m doing things now that just weren’t possible before. I’m in the

photos now on days out and I just love shopping online, simple things I just couldn’t do. It’s a whole other world now”.

WHAT A MAN! STEPHEN LOSES 10ST TO WIN MAN OF THE YEAR 2018 CITYWEST

A super slimmer from Saggart has scooped the title of Citywest’s Man of the Year 2018 after losing an incredible 10st. Since, Stephen Fleming has gone from 24st 11 to 14st 8.5lb, proving that Slimming World works just as well for men. Like many men, Stephen thought that slimming clubs were aimed at women and assumed the focus would be on ‘diet’ food and talking about people’s emotions. However, he decided to give it a try after a tough year for lots of different reasons. After walking through the doors, Stephen was pleasantly surprised to find that the support provided by the group was practical and the camaraderie and sense of competition appealed to him. He also enjoyed following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which is based on the science of satiety and energy density, enabling him to enjoy generous portions of healthy food to satisfy his appetite, so he didn’t have to go hungry. Stephen says: “Deep down I’d been unhappy with my weight for some time but it

took me a long time to face up to it. And then when I did admit to myself that I wanted to lose weight I still didn’t want to ask for help. “I’ve realised now though that far from being weak, asking for help takes strength of character and getting support to make changes has given me a sense of confidence that is benefiting every aspect of my life. “It was nerve-wracking walking through those doors for the first time but I wasn’t the only man there and everyone was so supportive. Now I look forward to the sessions. There is lots of banter and laughter and I get some really good ideas too, from new recipe suggestions to ideas to boost my activity levels. “I didn’t know what my mates would think about me attending Slimming World but they’ve been right behind it. Once they realised I could still have a beer they started to take an interest and when they see me eating things like steak and homemade chips, chicken curry or a roast dinner they always ask how

it’s possible to eat like that and still lose weight. What really had them sitting up and paying attention though was how well I was losing weight.” As the weight came off, Stephen found he had more energy and so he was eager to use it: “As a man I always thought that physical activity would be the best way to lose weight, but when I was at my heaviest I just wasn’t fit enough to do it. “Slimming World helped me to break it down into chunks and by starting small I’ve managed to build up my activity gradually. Stephen and his brothers have found hiking a great activity to do together and especially now because of the weight loss it is enjoyable. I can honestly say I feel like a different man since losing weight my health is so much better my doctor is delighted with my results.

Sharon Daly, who runs the Citywest Slimming World group said “I am incredibly proud of Stephen. He has done brilliantly, we’re all amazed by his transformation and is a real inspiration to the group. At home he is truly supported

by his lovely wife Irina. Stephen has shown great willpower as he works in Burdocks Fish and Chip shop and his workmates are amazed. People who haven’t seen him in a while don’t recognise him. We know that many men assume slimming clubs won’t be right for them, but Stephen shows that once they come through the doors they do brilliantly. Like Stephen I would advise anyone who would like to lose weight to find the courage to take that first step.” Another member Paddy Griffin has had amazing results and was awarded Man of the year in Citywest 7.30pm session he lost an amazing 2st 9lb. Well Done Paddy!! The Citywest Slimming World group is held every Wednesday at Scoile Aoife across from Lidl on Fortunestown Lane. In the same location Sharon runs another group on Tuesday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Anyone interested in joining the group can pop along or for more information they can call Sharon on 0851402870.

SDCC ANTI-DOG FOULING POP-UP AWARENESS STAND INTRODUCED

Dog fouling is an issue that is high on the agenda for South Dublin County Council and as part of the ongoing anti-dog fouling campaign the Mayor of South Dublin County Council Cllr Mark Ward officially launched the Green Dog Walker pop-up awareness stand in County Hall on the 7th August 2018.

Mayor Ward stated that “this is a very pro-active and positive step forward in the continuing battle against dog fouling and I encourage all citizens of South Dublin County to

engage in this scheme. The South Dublin County Council Green Dog Walker scheme has been in place for a number of years and seeks to encourage people to sign up to be a responsible dog owner. These new Green Dog Walker pop-up stands have been developed to provide information on the scheme and also to provide dog fouling bags for people free of charge. It will also display the Green Dog Walker participants materials, which includes a dog bone that contains dog fouling bags and an arm

band in a bid to encouraging people to sign up to the scheme. There will be 7 stands in public buildings across the County and one that will be made available to groups for promotion at community events”. South Dublin County Council continues to look for new and innovative ways to help combat the issue of dog fouling, and over the last number of years has engaged in radio and cinema adverts to increase awareness around the issue of dog fouling. In addition there are 3 different types of dog fouling signs available, of which, over 200 were made available during 2017 alone. These signs are available on request and considered on a case by case basis as they are erected on demonstrated need. Dog fouling stickers are also currently being piloted to show that all bins in the County are suitable for such dog litter, and bespoke one off signs are being placed in SDCC parks which were designed by St Joseph’s Special School, Tallaght. Make sure to keep an eye on South Dublin County Council’s website, Twitter and Facebook page for further information on the Green Dog Walker Stand and how you can get involved.

IRISH DAD ANNOUNCES SERIES OF FAIRYTALE BOOKS DESIGNED TO EMPOWER YOUNG GIRLS

Not Just a Princess creator Gavin Leonard wants people to recognise the importance of strong, powerful female role models in literature for children. After starting a parenting blog in July 2017 Gavin Leonard began to realise that many people shared his frustration with the way women are represented in Fairytales and he decided to do something about it.

careers and the support and help they offer to each other. Each princess has a unique set of skills and, along with her animal sidekick, helps people to solve problems around the fictional Wonderville.

Making up short stories to tell his 2-yearold daughter, Jade, gave the Dublin man the idea to create a world of independent, capable princesses who are not afraid to follow their dreams – and who won’t wait around to be saved! Gavin explained: “When Jade was just 1-year-old we started trying out as many careers as we could. She loved our fun days out and the idea sort of developed from there.”

Gavin said: “From a very young age children develop specific ideas about gender roles – what toys, books or careers are for boys and which ones are for girls – we want to breakdown the barriers around gender roles and teach girls that they can be whatever they want to be; THEY have the choice. For this to happen we need to make sure that girls everywhere can see themselves represented in the strong female role models that we create at Not Just a Princess, which is why we have such a diverse range of princesses throughout our book series.”

As the following for Not Just a Princess grew Gavin began to further develop the concept and decided to write his own series of books about strong, innovative princesses, their

MOTORING LIFE WITH KIA’S STUNNING ‘STINGER’ GT-LINE 5-DOOR COUPE By Breda Corrigan Kia’s all-new 5-door coupe, the aptly named ‘Stinger’, is set to unleash some pain on its established rivals in its class. Never before has the Korean manufacturer posed such a threat to premium brands such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Direct rivals to the new Kia Stinger include the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe and Audi’s A5 Sportback. The Stinger is a thoroughly convincing package that offers excellent driving dynamics, a sumptuous interior, useful practicality and stunning good looks. This truly is a headturning car and is certain to bring a whole new band of customers to the brand. The new Stinger is available in two trim levels – GT-Line and GT, with the latter being available only in 3.3-litre V6 petrol-engine guise. The GT-Line model is available with a 2.2-litre turbo diesel (CRDi) engine and both trim levels are fitted with an eightspeed automatic gearbox as standard. Both models come with a standard rear-wheeldrive set-up for the ultimate in driving thrills and provides the Stinger with surefooted handling and agility. My test car was a Kia Stinger 2.2-litre Turbo Diesel GT-Line Automatic, finished in striking ‘Micro Blue’ metallic paint. With 197bhp and 441Nm of torque available, the 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in just 7.3-seconds, leading to a top speed of 230km/h (where permitted). Official fuel consumption is as low as 5.8l/100km on a combined driving cycle. GT-Line specification is truly astonishing and includes artificial leather seat covering, seven airbags, ABS, EBD, hill start assist, electronic parking brake with auto-hold, ISOFIX child seat anchorage points x 2, smart key with button start, cruise control with speed limiter, auto cruise with smart cruise function, drive mode control, lever-type paddle shifters located on a leather-bound and flat-bottom multi-function steering wheel, blind spot collision warning, lane keep assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, speed limit information display, around view

monitoring system, auto lights & wipers, wireless phone charging point, electric seat adjustment (front passenger and driver) with driver’s seat memory function, heated seats front & rear, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, split-folding rear seats, LED headlights and daytime-runninglights, Harmon Kardon sound system, 8” infotainment touch-screen with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, supervision cluster with a 7” rheostat, powered tailgate, alloy wheels and many more comfort, convenience and safety features. Thanks to an emission figure of 154g/km, annual road tax is just €390. On the road, the new Stinger drives with the poise and elegance of its German rivals, with perfect weighting being allocated to all the controls and to the body movements. Acceleration is smooth and progressive thanks to a slick-shifting 8-speed automatic gearbox. The Stinger feels impressively consistent and composed on twisty roads and tackles motorway journeys with ease. All occupants of the new Stinger will benefit from excellent seat comfort and will appreciate the excellent shoulder and elbow room available. Climb aboard the Stinger in GT Line trim and you will definitely fell like you’re in a luxury car. The cabin is dominated by quality materials, which are both soft and tactile, with real metal touches and a very solid build quality. The Stinger’s non-active suspension proved itself to be terrific on the move and offers a perfect blend of comfort and engaging driving fun – resulting in a car that is rewarding to drive fast but won’t rattle your spine out of alignment on bumpy roads. The new Stinger is a surprising large vehicle (an impressive 4,830mm in length) and this, in turn, leads to excellent cabin and boot space. With the rear seats in place, a cargo area of 406-litres is available, with masses of extra space just waiting to be called

upon with the rear seats folded. The new Stinger was awarded the maximum 5-star rating by Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme), thereby indicating that the car has excellent crash protection and practical safety features to compliment it stylish good looks. The Stinger’s sweeping roofline, broad shouldered stance and striking design features transform the car into one of the most distinctive cars on the road today. Kia’s design chief, Peter Schreyer, has a wealth of car design experience behind him and is the man responsible for the stunning designs we have seen from Kia over the last number of years. With the new Stinger, Schreyer regarded the car as his own personal project in many ways – having initially displayed a sketch of the car that would become the Kia GT concept at the

2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and insisting that he was going the get the car from concept to production before the end of the decade. Overall, the new Stinger is a truly competent car and is a sign of great things to come from Kia. With the Stinger, Kia has produced a car that will appeal to the heart as well as the head and is one of the most refreshing cars that I have driven recently. When the open road beckons, the Stinger helps you focus on enjoying the drive thanks to sophisticated, convenient technology. The new Kia Stinger GT-Line is priced at €52,995 (ex-works), while the GT V6 is priced at €66,895 (ex-works). Kia’s 7-year (150,000km) warranty comes as standard, as does a 5-year paint defect and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty for outstanding peace-of-mind motoring.

CLONDALKIN PROJECT PREVENTING CHILD TRAFFICKING

750,000 predators sit online at any given time waiting for vulnerable children to come into their line of vision. They lie in wait to groom, exploit and traffick these children across countries, borders and continents. A project working out of the village in Clondalkin,

the first of its kind in the country, is working to prevent these abuses.

International trends demonstrate the use of hotel and private rental accommodation to facilitate child trafficking operations. MECPATHS (Mercy Efforts for Child Protection

Against Trafficking with The Hospitality Sector) was founded by The Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy in 2013 to ensure the international trends do not land on Irish shores. Hotels and private accommodation can guarantee the anonymity,

the privacy and the discretion which facilitates human trafficking, without the awareness or consent of hotel staff, management and owners.

MECPATHS works closely with the hospitality sector in Ireland; delivering awareness presentations to hotel staff and management and offering support to those who need it to raise consciousness that this is a phenomenon which occurs in every part of the world and Ireland is now amongst those most in need of supported intervention. Between 2009 and 2016, there were 512 cases of human trafficking reported in Ireland- 143 of these victims were children, this is just a fraction of the reality. “A common misinterpretation of the trends is that children at risk of being trafficked are from elsewhere, that children born into extreme poverty are more at risk of being trafficked and that these realities are so distant from our daily lives in

Ireland. This is not the case. Irish children are being exploited here by predators for sexual exploitation. It is a concern for everyone, in today’s digital age” MECPATHS Communications & Awareness Officer comments. The continuous exploration of media coverage confirms that Ireland is underprepared to respond to the growing trend of human trafficking here at home. The 2018 TIP Report [Trafficking in Persons] (US State Department) has confirmed that Ireland is not meeting the minimum standards required to be recognised as adequately meeting the needs of those trapped in worlds of Human Trafficking.

MECPATHS works to focus on the frontline staff of Irish hotels to offer their free education and advice service. In the past year, MECPATHS has worked closely with PREM Group to design a bespoke online training for their staff and it has been rolled out to over 500 staff to date in Ireland

alone, receiving a national CSR award earlier this year, recognising their efforts and impact. PREM Group is an International Hotel Management Company operating over 50 properties across 5 countries. Established in Dublin in 1996, PREM specialise in operating hotels and serviced apartments across Ireland, England, Belgium, France and The Netherlands. Sarah Marr, HR Manager of PREM Group, reflects “we knew we had to do something to help. MECPATHS were on board with us immediately. With no cost attached to the service, it is something every hotel needs to engage with. It offers protection for everyone and if we can save just one person from sexual exploitation by doing what we do, we will be proud.” To find out more about MECPATHS, to engage with the service they provide or to register your hotels’ interest, please visit Mecpaths.ie or contact info@mecpaths.ie
