MAJOR CONCERNS OVER FORMER Tallaght Stone Centre headstones crafted for all cemeteries COUNCIL HOUSES LEASED FROM Tel: (01) 462 6200 Fax: (01) 462 6209 INVESTMENT FUNDS email: info@tallaghtstonecentre.ie web: tallaghtstonecentre.ie

Local representatives have raised concern over the practice of South Dublin County Council leasing homes from private companies for social housing. In the last number of weeks a lot of former council homes have been advertised for social housing through 25 year leases. Three of these properties are owned by the Davy Platform ICAV, part of the Davy Group. The homes would have been bought by tenants at discounted prices only to now be leased back to the council

at market rent costs. There is currently no option for the council to buy these properties at the end of the 25 year lease. The families who will be housed in the properties will be guaranteed to be re-housed by the council if the lease is not extended after 25 years.

Gino Kenny, People Before Profit TD for Dublin Mid West, commented: “This is a completely absurd situation where the council is leasing back homes that it built decades ago at

a ridiculous cost. This is yet another aspect of the housing crisis and caused by the failure of successive governments to build public housing. “I know many families who are desperate for housing and will of course be happy to get a home. But in the long run this practice will be extremely costly to the taxpayer and when the 25 year lease is up the family might not be able to stay in their home.” Cllr Johansson

Madeleine added:

“Most of these homes will be owned by major investment companies who will be making huge profits from these leases. This is yet another hand-out to private investment firms from the state. If this (and previous) government/s had built adequate numbers of council houses in the past we wouldn’t have found ourselves in this situation. It makes no sense that the government claims that we “can’t afford” to build council houses on a large scale when they are more than happy to pay extraordinary amounts to private investment firms and landlords.

CLONDALKIN EMBRACES NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK Clondalkin Heritage Week events recently took place with a most interesting Walk & Talk on the river Camac hosted by Friends of the Camac. Earlier in the week the Viking Experience paid

a visit to the Heritage Centre, several other local tours were held, a village Education tour, a tour of St Johns Church, and a Tour of the SIAC quarry at Monastery Road which was a huge attraction. Online events for both young and

DUST FROM VINCENT BYRNE SITE AN ISSUE FOR RESIDENTS Dust coming from the Vincent Byrne site in Palmerstown Village is a daily problem faced by local residents, according to David Gardiner, Workers’ Party representative for Palmerstown-Fonthill. “The Workers’ Party has had complaints from residents about the issue, and I’ve been in touch with both South Dublin County Council and the HSE over it, and yet it still persists.” “The methods that they’re using to stop the dust from spreading clearly aren’t working. A number of community volunteers were out sweeping dust up from some of the roads this morning, in fact. Others have been doing the same in their own gardens. It isn’t fair on them or Palmerstown residents in general.” “Once again, those behind this development continue to show absolutely no concern for the wellbeing of the people of Palmerstown.” “That’s the nature of this development, it isn’t there to build the community, it’s a cash-grab for developers and landlords at the expense of the community and renters.”

Undoubtedly however the highlight of the week was the midweek launch of a short film called “ C l o n d a l k i n Ta n g i b l e Threads” produced in partnership between South Dublin County and Irish Crochet Lace Revival which narrated the story of the many Clondalkin ladies who made Irish Crochet in their homes exclusively for Sybil Connolly in the 1950s and 1960s. Several Clondalkin women adapted their creative skills to suit international haute couture which was sold to many famous and rich people, including Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of John F Kennedy. Several Hollywood stars notably Julie Andrews and Elizabeth Taylor were also among her clients. LIZA SALES FROM CURVES KNOCKLYON SHARES HER JOURNEY TO HEALTH My Curves story began way back in 2006, when I joined up as Curves member myself in my local club. I have heard lots of fantastic things about Curves Workout program. What sold it for me was the fast, safe and effective strength training 30-minute workout with long-lasting results just three times a week. I tried many different programs over the years, I loved to exercise. Keeping fit and active has always been a big part of my lifestyle growing up. Looking and feeling good was vital. I had moved to Dublin a few years prior, and I was starting to pile on the weight over the last few years. I went from being this super-fit active person

to a lazy couch potato. My job kept me busy some days working through my lunch break to get deadlines done in work or at the end of the workday grabbing a takeaway on the way home. I wasn’t fitting in any time to exercise to keep fit, stay active or healthy in general. I had been a member at Curves for the past few years now. The program worked really well for me; I had gotten fantastic results. I had lost a lot of weight. I could see the results, but it was even better when my family and friends could see it too. It felt good to reach a healthy weight again to have more energy and to feel happy in my appearance and in my clothes. What

women doesn’t like to get a compliment. You work for it you earn it. Let that smile, sparkle girl.

these women achieve their fitness, health and weight loss and wellness goals over the years and beyond.

Moving fast forward few years now I loved Curves so much, that I had applied for position at the club that I was a member at. I had successfully grown and managed the club for over 7-year period. I decided to purchase a resale club back in 2015 when I was 7 months pregnant, and I have been running my club ever since. My dream was to always have my own business and to inspire women in my community. I am grateful to wake up to still be one of the lucky ones to still do the job that I love every day with passion and commitment to every woman that walk in my door.

Curves is more than just a gym; we are a support we are a network for women of all ages, shapes and sizes and my vision is to make our community a healthier more vibrant place one woman at a time. If we can teach women how to take care of themselves in terms of creating a healthier balance with exercise, food, and lifestyle then I truly believe this will echo across our community to our husbands/partners/ children/families this will really make a huge impact on the overall physical and mental health in our town.

My A-Team as we jokingly call each other love to teach and educate, support our Curves Members Purple Squad in our Community every day. My absolute passion lies in helping women realise their true potential, I love to see women become more confident and to start to really love who they really are. Over the years I have helped and supported thousands of women in Curves Knocklyon and to bring this support across my local community to help

A huge amount of women do not feel confident or comfortable in a traditional gym environment. This is where Curves comes in our unique women only fitness club with our welcoming safe environment. We are still the missing link in the Fitness Industry even after all these years. Curves provide one to one support for women on every single visit, we ensure each woman has a goal and is working towards it with her Curves Coach at every workout. We make exercising fun, safe and effective at every

workout which for a lot of women they never believed could be a reality. Working as Circuit Coach in Curves, I have felt empowered coaching and helping women reach their fitness goals and how they would share their personal stories on their unique journey to our Curves world. I still love my job today just like the very first day I step my foot in the door on my first shift. When I started my fitness and weight loss journey. I was a size 16 not only was

I not feeling healthy. I have lost over 5.50 stone with Curves isn’t that amazing and maintain it. I did get to my healthy weight with the help and constant support of my qualified Curves Coaches with the proven that Curves workout really worked for me. I am now at my optimal weight for my height and age. Curves have really changed my life just look at my photos for proof! Real people getting real results at every session.

JOIN IN DUBLIN’S BIGGEST CLEAN-UP EVENT Residents, volunteers and communities of South Dublin are invited to join Dublin’s anti-litter movement and make a positive impact this September during Dublin Climate Action Week. The 2021 Dublin Community Clean-up builds on the success of the 2019 event, when over 180 cleanups took place across the county. This year’s event will take place from the 11 to 19 of September as part of the inaugural Dublin Climate Action week.

Dublin’s largest clean-up event is a county-wide collaboration initiative from South Dublin County Council, An Taisce, local volunteers, residents, community groups, Fingal County Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Dublin City Council, Local Authority Waters Programme, Dublin City Canals and Dodder Action. This event encourages volunteers, agencies and communities to work together to make a concerted effort to address litter and environmental degradation. Through

collaboration, we can tackle the issue of litter in local areas and continue to #dublincommunitycleanup. You can either organise your own clean-up or join an existing one in your community. Register your event at www. dublincommunitycleanup. ie. All litter pick kits will be provided by South Dublin County Council. The Council can also collect the litter bags after the event. The Mayor of South Dublin County Council Peter Kavanagh commented “I’m delighted to launch the Dublin Community Clean Up in conjunction with An Taisce and the three other Local Authorities in Dublin. As a proud member of Clondalkin Tidy Towns, I’ve seen the pride of place our citizens have, and how hard they work to keep our communities clean. I encourage everyone to start the habit of a lifetime and get out to help spruce up our towns and villages as part of Dublin’s Climate Action Week” “South Dublin County Council is delighted to see the return of the

Dublin Community Clean Up. Extending it to a weeklong event and aligning it with Dublin Climate Action Week shows the link between what we consume, how we dispose of it and our changing climate, “Explained Fionnghuala Ryan, Climate Change and Environmental Awareness Officer.

For more information on how to organise a clean-up or join an existing one in your locality, visit www. dublincommunitycleanup. ie. Don’t forget to join the conversation on social media at #dublincommunitycleanup.

TD SUPPORTS SDCC LOCAL AUTHORITY WORKERS IN DISPUTE TD for Dublin Mid-West Eoin O’Broin is standing with the workers of South Dublin County Council (SDCC) as they protest to seek clarity on the future of their employment conditions. The protest is a result of management’s refusal to commit to honouring the agreed Workforce Plan and fears of the privatisation of essential public services. Speaking ahead of a recent

demonstration in Jobstown, Teachta O’Broin said: “I am standing with the local authority workers and supporting their call for direct labour and an end to the direct use agency staff. “The workers are calling for South Dublin County Council to honour the workforce plan and clarify their position on it, immediately. “These essential workers have played a vital

role in ensuring essential services such as Water, Roads, Parks, Housing, Litter, Cemeteries and others, have been maintained to the highest standards throughout the Covid-19 crisis. “I stand with them and echo their calls to SDCC. We need to ensure public services remain public and that the rights of these workers are respected.”

DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR DUBLIN ARTISTS TO APPLY FOR ESB BRIGHTER FUTURE ARTS FUND

CONCERN EXPRESSED AT PASSPORT BACKLOG

TD for Dublin Mid West, Mark Ward has expressed deep concern at the failure of the government to put in place provisions to address the backlog of approx. 112,000 passport applications which are currently outstanding. The Dublin Mid West TD said: “The backlog in processing passport applications is down to the failure of the government to put in place sufficient supports for the passport service during this the busiest time of the year. There can be no doubt as to the effort that the staff and management in the passport service are putting in to deal with both the backlog accrued over Covid, and the deluge of applications coming forward at this point, which is the peak period for passport applications.

Artists in Dublin planning to apply for project funding from the new ESB Brighter Future Arts Fund, in partnership with Business to Arts, have until 5pm on Wednesday, September 8th to submit their application online. The €250,000 fund is open to artists working with organisations on creative ideas that will engage the public in a positive way around the energy transition. These artworks and arts projects can be in any art form that takes place on the island of Ireland including visual arts, spoken word, music, theatre and much more. Potential project themes include environmental sustainability, engaging communities around climate change, sustainable development goals and imagining what a brighter future might look like. For more information on the fund and for details on how to apply, visit: www.businesstoarts.ie/artsfund/esb/. Pic Credit: Conor McCabe Photography.

So far to date in 2021 alone, the Passport Service has received almost 4000,000 passport applications. According to figures revealed to the Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs John Brady, there are currently approx. 112,000 applications with the Passport Service. Some 50,000

of these applications require additional documentation, while a further 62,000 applications are sitting with the Passport Service. In Dublin alone there are 15,250 applications waiting to be processed. This despite passport service staff working long hours, and in some cases, on Saturdays and Sundays to attempt to deal with a growing workload. But the reality is that, during normal times there is a core staff of approx. 450 in the passport section, which is increased during the peak period by a total of approx. 200 to a total of 650. But at present staff numbers are significantly reduced, with only about 500 personnel in total being left to deal with demands. I am calling upon the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, as the individual who bears the ultimate responsibility for his department, to ensure that there are sufficient staff on hand to deal with demand at this time. The responsibility lies with Minister Coveney, and he must act accordingly

EDUCATION FEATURE DIGITAL SAFETY SHOULD BE Post Primary Schools Tackle Your Feelings Schools Mental Wellbeing Programme INCORPORATED INTO OUR SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Digital safety should be incorporated into the school curriculum, the Dublin Mid-West Fine Gael TD has said. Deputy Emer Higgins, believes that young people could be better equipped for the world online, and the skills for how to deal with the pressures and risks it brings should be taught in schools.

Deputy Higgins said: “Too many of our children and young people are struggling to deal with the pressures of the digital world and I know from speaking to parents in the community that this is a huge concern. We must educate children early about the challenges of social media and give them the tools and skills to deal with those challenges. I strongly believe that digital literacy and internet safety should be incorporated formally into our school curriculum via either CSPE or SPHE. “This would be important not just for our senior cycle students, but also at junior cycle. Research by ‘Cyber Safe Kids’ earlier this year showed that four in five primaryaged children have profiles on social media and messaging apps that should not be

accessible to children under 13. “It seems that parents would support such a move. A survey conducted by Barnardos found that 97% of parents think online safety should be a compulsory part of the school curriculum, with over half of respondents saying that this learning should start as early as Junior Infants. “Many of our schools in Dublin Mid-West do a great job of educating their pupils on these issues already. Resources like the ‘Be Safe Online’ campaign from the Department of Education can be valuable to teachers in this effort, and Safer Internet Day each February is a great opportunity to highlight the issues for young people. “However, the approach from schools is not streamlined across the country and I really feel that this must be done in a more structured way, with digital literacy and internet safety becoming an important part of the core curriculum. I am writing to the Minister for Education on this matter and would hope that we can discuss it at Oireachtas Committee level when the new Dáil term commences,” concluded Deputy Higgins.

Pictured are Ireland Rugby captain Ciara Griffin and Ireland and Leinster winger James Lowe who have both teamed up with Rugby Players Ireland, Zurich and the Z Zurich Foundation to invite Post primary schools to take part in the 2021/2022 Tackle Your Feelings Schools mental wellbeing programme as part of the #ImTakingControl campaign. WHY SHOULD I SERIOUSLY CONSIDER STUDYING IN A FURTHER EDUCATION COLLEGE? This September more than 70,000 students will commence their studies in Further Education (FE) colleges all over Ireland. But what exactly is a Further Education college and how can FE colleges advance your career and education prospects? Further Education covers education and training which occurs after second level schooling but which is not part of the third level system. FE colleges act as a bridge to access courses at third level (Universities and Institutes of Technology). For example, if you do not have enough points to study Science or Engineering at University, you can complete a one year FE course and then re-apply through the Higher Education links scheme. This scheme links FE awards with a huge number of courses at third level, so completing a FE course may be another route into third level. FE courses are also aimed at upskilling and reskilling so that students can progress into excellent employment opportunities. If you want to work as a Healthcare Assistant in a hospital for example, obtaining the QQI Level 5 award in Healthcare ensures that you are qualified to do so. All Further Education courses lead to a QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland) award, which is a nationally and internationally recognised qualification. FE courses can be offered on a full- or part-time basis and are available in a diverse range of areas including Art, Business, Computing, Childcare, Engineering, Healthcare, Nursing, Science and Social Care. The majority of Further Education courses are placed at Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). The NFQ is a ten point scale on which all Irish qualifications are based. By successfully completing a Further Education course at Level 5, you can then progress easily onto third level (Level 6 upwards). Further Education courses are typically one year in duration. They differ to third level in that they have smaller class sizes, individualised support from tutors and a more hands on approach to learning. Further Education courses are available to school-leavers and adults at any stage of their life who wish to upskill, reskill or gain a new qualification. Throughout the duration of a FE course, students will gain essential skills which will give them a massive advantage ahead of their peers when they start at third level or in the world of work. For instance, Nursing students will be adept at taking blood pressure readings and client care. Software students will have experience in web design and programming. Engineering students will have spent the year studying specific core modules such as Electronics and Mechanics in a specialised workshop. From Medical Secretary to Community Care to Business, there is more than likely a Further Education course that is perfect for you. Generally speaking FE college fees tend to be very affordable when compared with Third Level. FE students typically pay no tuition fees for their course, with the only charge being a small registration/materials fee. VTOS-eligible students pay no fees or course costs at all. While PLC students are eligible for the SUSI Grant, and this will not affect any subsequent grant applications when they enter Higher Education. If you are interested in pursuing a Further Education course, you can find out information at www.qualifax.ie or by going directly to the website of the FE college you are interested in. However please be advised that most courses start in September and if you wish to be considered for a place at your local FE College, you need to apply as soon as possible.

INNOVATION ZED LIMITED AND SOCIALDIABETES ANNOUNCE GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP Innovation Zed Ltd, the developer of novel Insulin Pen ‘InsulCheck CONNECT’ add-on device, and SocialDiabetes, a leading diabetes management company, recently announced the signing of a global partnership and data integration agreement. As a result of this new partnership, the companies will pursue joint efforts to promote and sell their products as a single integrated system to improve health outcomes for people with diabetes. Innovation Zed is headquartered at NovaUCD, the Centre for New Ventures and Entrepreneurs at University College Dublin. SocialDiabetes is one of the most established Diabetes management software providers who are headquartered in Barcelona, Spain. Innovation Zed, launched InsulCheck CONNECT, an insulin pen addon technology which automatically collects essential usage data that informs insulin pen users of their injection history. When paired with the SocialDiabetes management platform via Bluetooth®, both the end-user and physician can record and view behavioural data to improve diabetes management. Currently, adherence to insulin therapy is one of the most difficult aspects of diabetes treatment. A simple focus on motivating users to increase adherence to their daily injection schedule can potentially improve their long-term glucose control (HbA1c). Such improvements can assist in reducing the likelihood of developing diabetes related complications. “Now that our InsulCheck CONNECT technology is integrated with the SocialDiabetes Platform, we can empower existing platform users, and entice new users to adopt this closed data system

ecosystem with aims to improve adherence and their diabetes treatment,” said Dr Dean Minnock, CEO, Innovation Zed.

María Jesús Salido, CEO, Social Diabetes, said, “This global partnership is yet another cornerstone in our strategy to bring quality diabetes management to a wider audience. Therapy adherence is a serious issue and we are dedicated to making a cumbersome task as easy as it could be. The unique features for insulin pen users in SocialDiabetes are designed to both save time and allow them to do things, otherwise only available to pump users.” “We believe the option to

calculate and set reminders for split extended bolus and the automated processes that a Bluetooth®connected

pen allows will be of great benefit to owners of Innovation Zed’s InsulCheck Connect.”

LEAVING CERT RESULTS 2021 ISSU wishes to congratulate all students who have received their recent leaving cert grades on their achievement. ISSU Uachtarán Emer Neville says:“This is a time to celebrate your hard work over the past year, and all that you have achieved despite the circumstances. You made it through the leaving cert in the midst of a pandemic and you should be incredibly proud.” ISSU Education Officer Jack McGinn says: “The Leaving Cert Helpline, run by the NPCPP, is available to call on 1800 265 165. RCSI LAUNCHES NEW FREE COURSE ON HEALTH AND HAPPINESS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE A new course aimed at giving young people the skills to optimise their health and well-being has been launched by the Centre for Positive Psychology and Health at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. Beginning on 4 October, this free tenweek online course on ‘The Science of Health and Happiness for Young People’ will explore the principles of positive psychology and lifestyle medicine and cover a range of topics tailored to young people between 13

and 18 years old.

Sessions will include growth mindsets, whole person health, positive emotions and positive practices of motivation, exam management, regulating anxiety and time-management. It will also examine happiness throughout the life-cycle and share strategies aimed at fostering health and character strength in adolescence. Established in 2019, the

RCSI Centre for Positive Health and Psychology is a unique academic centre that combines the scientific principles of positive psychology and lifestyle medicine to enhance health and well-being. Professor Ciaran O’Boyle, Centre Director, said: “We are delighted to bring this course to teachers, educators and parents. We want our young people to thrive and flourish. The programme will help them to explore and understand

the science behind their health and happiness so that they develop the capacity to effectively manage their well-being. It will help young people to understand their emotions, know how to use and develop their unique strengths, and grow as well-rounded humans ready to handle life’s challenges.” Dr Trudy Meehan, Senior Clinical Psychologist specialising in child and adolescent mental health, said: “Young people all

over the world continue to face a unique set of mental health challenges but they have also shown incredible resilience, creativity and innovation in the face of uncertainty. This course offers participants an evidence-based programme designed to bolster selfesteem and nurture optimism.” “Research has demonstrated that when young people practice positive psychology strategies, they experience real benefits, including reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression, and greater satisfaction with their lives. We look forward to connecting with educators, coaches and parents to help young people build healthy habits and understand the science behind their health and well-being.”

Positive Psychology and Health. In 2020, a pilot programme initiated by Dr Pádraic Dunne from the Centre, was conducted with transition year students from two Irish secondary schools: Athy College and Ard Scoil Na Trionaide, Athy, Kildare. Feedback from Joanne Parry, Guidance Counsellor and Assistant Principal at Athy College, and the students was used to develop this course.

The course will feature modules with clinicians, researchers and academics at the RCSI Centre for

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCHOOLS CRIPPLING FAMILIES TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has expressed his concern at schools needing to rely on voluntary contributions from families to fund the basic necessities, and the considerable financial hardship and financial strain this can cause on many families. Sinn Féin has asked families to get in touch and share their personal experiences about how these costs are affecting them. Teachta Crowe said: “In recent weeks, thousands of families have been getting ready for the return to school. With this comes the annual requests for voluntary contributions. “Year on year, many families are being crippled by requests for contributions of very often well over €100 or €200 per child and even as much as €300-400 in some cases. “These are huge sums for families to be expected to pull together in a matter of weeks and every year puts serious strain on families’ finances. “We know that in reality these contributions are voluntary in name only. In some instances, students and families can be denied certain services and extra-curricular activities and face stigma and extreme embarrassment. “When added to the costs of uniforms, school books, and school transport, this represents a very significant and unfair financial burden is placed on families. “Saint Vincent De Paul has warned that they are receiving hundreds of phone calls from parents every day who are anxious about these expensive costs. This is unacceptable and must change. “This is happening because the Government doesn’t fund our schools properly and they are forced to seek these contributions elsewhere. “It doesn’t have to be this way. Schools shouldn’t be so underfunded that they have to seek contributions and fundraise for basic things like keeping the lights and heating on. Sinn Féin wants to bring an end to the need for so called voluntary contributions. “Sinn Féin will stand up for families to ensure these unfair costs stop and that schools finally get the proper government funding.”

MOTORING LIFE

WITH

Ford Puma ST – A Sporty Cougar By Breda Corrigan

Ford launched its impressive Puma SUV in 2020, and have now added some performance flavour in the form of the new Ford Puma ST. With a starting price of €41,813 (ex works), the Puma ST is aimed at buyers who want to mix performance-car pace with usable SUV space. Fiesta ST Underpinnings; The Puma ST is based on the same underpinnings as the mighty Ford Fiesta ST. Under the bonnet lies the same 1.5-litre Ford Ecoboost 200PS petrol engine but with torque boosted to 320Nm, and this helps the Puma ST match the Fiesta’s 0-100km/h time of just 6.7 seconds. Also like the Fiesta, power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. However, the Puma’s exhaust note is tuned to be slightly less noticeable than the Fiesta ST and this is done to make the Puma ST a more practical family car. To ensure that the 3cm taller

Puma ST feels as agile as its smaller sibling, the car benefits from a fasteracting steering, stiffer suspension and Michelin Pilot Sports tyres developed especially for Ford. The ST adds some very comfortable Recaro sports seats, a flatbottomed steering wheel with ST badging, some new pedals and a sporty gear knob. Wireless charging for smartphone devices, parking sensors front and rear, and a 12.3 inch digital drivers display are all standard features. Designed To Stand Out; With the Puma’s distinctive frontal design and smart looks from the rear, the ST has similar bumper designs to the existing ST-Line trim, but with selective use of black paint and different mesh patterns for the grille. A contrasting black finish is applied to the roof, the rear spoiler, the door mirrors and the window trim, while the standard 19-inch alloy wheels are offered in two different finishes. The

“Mean Green” paint finish of my test car is in keeping with Ford’s performance cars of the past, but it can be ordered in subtle colours as well. Impressive Tech & Spec; The new Puma is available in a choice of five specifications - Titanium, ST-Line, ST-Line X, range-topping ST Line X Vignale and now with the newly introduced ST, for performance car buyers. Exclusive ST features include 19” Magnetite machined alloy wheels, unique ST elements to front and rear body styling kit including Ford Performance embossed splitter, fixed LED signature headlamps, Black painted contrast roof, dual chrome exhaust, red brake calipers, ST logo projection (from door mirrors), ST suspension, selectable drive modes – normal/ eco/sport/track, engine sound enhancer, front and rear parking sensors, Ford KeyFree system (keyless entry), ST flat-bottomed steering wheel with metal

grey stitching, Recaro sports seats with ST logo finished in partial leather and Miko Dinamica, heated steering wheel, front heated seats, unique ST gear shift knob, ST scuff plates, ST front & rear mats and alloy sports pedals. Optional extras fitted to my test car include an ST Performance Pack (Mechanical Limited Slip Differential (LSD), Launch Control, Performance Shift Light and Shift Indicator – priced at €1,172) and a Driver Assistance Pack (AEB by Radar/Camera, BLIS with CTA and Active Braking, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Evasive Steering, Active Park Assist, and a rear view camera – priced at €1,456). Dynamic Performance; The Puma ST’s seats and driving position are fantastic, it’s precise and sporty gearshift, responsive clutch pedal and progressive brakes make it a really easy car to drive. It has a stiffer sports suspension

for an even firmer ride particularly when driving on bendy roads – and the ST’s overall road holding ability is inspirational. The steering gives a good sense of connection to the front wheels which adds to the overall driving enjoyment, while a myriad of standard safety systems provide added driver confidence behind the wheel. The Ford Puma was awarded a full five stars when tested by Euro NCAP - like the Fiesta upon which it is based and there is also a lot of autonomous technology available. MegaBox Boot Storage As Standard; The boot space in the Puma measures in at 456-litres, while extra practicality comes courtesy of an 80-litre waterproof storage box (which Ford calls MegaBox). Ingeniously, this MegaBox is essentially a storage space lined with waterproof and hard-wearing plastic, and has a drain plug at the bottom to release any liquid

residue. Even without the MegaBox the Puma’s boot is a practical space, with an uninterrupted one-metre width and a moveable floor that offers either maximum space, or a large flat load space with the seats folded. The parcel shelf is flexible and attached to the tailgate, so it doesn’t get in the way or require any hinges in the loadspace that would eat into storage and can carry up to 565kg. Pricing & Verdict; While pricing for the new Ford Puma starts at just €26,069 (ex-works), the full-fat ST model is priced at €41,813 (ex-works). The Puma ST is a welcome performance-car addition to the smaller end of Ford’s SUV line-up, and is a very appealing proposition in every respect. It is fun to drive, practical and sporty, and is a very dynamic car with strong cornering ability, and a dignified ride quality, which is hard to match in the performance class.

ESKER CELTIC FC U12 INTERMEDIATE CORKAGH PARK CLONDALKIN HOSTS A NEW URBAN OUTDOOR MARKET TEAM IN ACTION By Aron Hegarty Recently Esker Celtic FC U12 Intermediate Team took on Shamrock Rovers FC at Hermitage Park in Lucan. The fixture itself attracted plenty of interest as the game was watched by a sizeable gathering from the sidelines. Onlookers were treated to an exhibition of slick passing football, superb defending, vital blocks, crucial saves, swift counter-attacking and well-taken goals. Esker, coached by Kevin Doyle, held their own and restricted a highly-talented Rovers side for much of the match. Trailing at halftime, the hosts broke to equalise straight after the restart through the impressive Josh Kenny and had goalkeeper Finn Heffernan to thank for producing several fine stops to keep Esker within touching distance of Rovers until a late flurry won it for the visitors. Thank you to Rovers, the referee, coaches and parents for the game, to our jersey sponsors Crescent and our club sponsors TradeHire Recruitment.

Corkagh Park, Clondalkin hosts a new urban outdoor market called the Urban Picnic which opened on the 4th of September. The market takes place each Saturday from 11am to 5pm, and promises to have something for everyone to enjoy. Urban Picnic has street food, crafts, and artisan produce with family entertainment planned as the weeks progress. These type of outdoor markets help promote the local community while enhancing the attraction of parks and tourism in the County.

Mayor Cllr Peter Kavanagh said “This is great news for Corkagh Park, for Clondalkin, and is something the community has wanted for many years. I want to pay tribute to the councillors past and present who pushed for this market, and to the council officials who made it happen. The outdoor market promises to have hot food, coffee, sweets and treats, ice cream, artisan produce, crafts and more, as well as showcasing some up-and-coming food producers supported by the Local Enterprise Office South Dublin. The Council is trialing this new outdoor market during September and October and I’d call on the local community to

come out and support this worthwhile initiative.”The market will operate in the designated area in the vicinity of the St. John’s Road area. The outdoor market in Corkagh Park will promote local enterprise and develop a sense of community around the market by utilising where possible local producers, crafts people, and startups. This will include Local Enterprise Office South Dublin (LEO) start-up clients. “LEO South Dublin is delighted with the opportunity to collaborate

on this wonderful initiative by SDCC and the County Promotion Unit. Urban Picnic Market is a fantastic opportunity for our exciting new local food producers to showcase their new foods and who will furthermore benefit from the feedback from their local consumers attending the market. The LEO is a proud supporter of the growing number of highly innovative and diverse local food businesses and initiatives like Urban Picnic is a really exciting event for Clondalkin and wider local community”, said Tom Rooney, Head of Enterprise, LEO South Dublin.
