HOUSEHOLDERS ALERTED ABOUT FRAUDULENT CALLS Local TD Seán Crowe has called a spike in fraudulent calls to local residents as a “worrying development”. The TD warned householders to be alert against unsolicited phone calls from individuals claiming they are from broadband suppliers and looking for personal information and access to their personal phone and laptop. Deputy Seán Crowe said: “I want to alert constituents of a fraud that is currently doing the rounds locally

and seems to be on the increase. It is a worrying development and involves a phone call on a landline or a mobile phone where the owner is convinced that there is an upgrade of the broadband available and that they need to take certain steps or wait months for an alleged update.

“The call in some cases sounds like its coming from a computer but it is usually followed up by the fraudster claiming that they are updating the

broadband software and they need you to turn on your laptop or desktop computer.

They then talk the householder into a series of moves while all the time they are hacking and skimming the phone or computer for personal details including passwords and bank details. “Unfortunately, when accessing the phone or computer they can get other names of individuals on your database and the cycle of fraud then continues

on to someone else and new victims are targeted. “One Tallaght resident I spoke to recently said he was surprised at how gullible he was, and even more frightening, how convincing the fraudster was. It was only after a whole series of unusual personal questions that he became wary and hung up on the unsolicited call. They said they wanted to check the speed of his broadband, and could do this through his phone, then asked for his mobile number.

They then managed to install an app, instructing him to press the arrow which appeared on his home screen, allowing them to have total control of his phone and everything on it. “He then had to go through the procedure of ringing his bank, cancelling his cards and going to a provider to get his phone cleared. His next stop was to call to the Garda Authorities in Tallaght

FLAVOURS OF SOUTH DUBLIN 2019

South Dublin County Council’s annual food festival will take place in Rathfarnham Castle on Sunday 23rd of June from 11am - 6pm. This is a unique family friendly food festival highlighting the diversity and vibrancy of the food culture in the County. This year Flavours of South Dublin is bringing together wonderful restaurants and eateries, cultural craft displays, a demo kitchen, Agri Aware’s Mobile Farm; free tours of Rathfarnham Castle and lots of children and family entertainment on 2 stages.

Never ever give personal information to callers no matter how convincing they appear and if in doubt always contact legitimate providers whose phone number is always on your bill. “Internet providers also have a responsibility to their customers and they should be making them fully aware of this practice and offering some useful advice. “Lastly, I would appeal to the Garda Authorities to ramp up their fraud squad operation and to use their ample resources to alert the general public about this latest scam from these criminals.”

FIANNA FAIL PUBLISHES SCOOTER SAFETY BILL

John Curran T.D. has said his party has published legislation to set legal

parameters for the safe use of e-scooters. The Bill removes the

requirement for e-scooters and e-bikes to be taxed and insured by altering the

definition of mechanically propelled vehicles. Deputy Curran said,

BEALTAINE FESTIVAL 2019 CLOSES

On the 30th of May in the Red Cow Inn, South Dublin County Council’s (SDCC) Cllr Charlie O’ Connor closed the Bealtaine Festival, the festival celebrating Art and Creativity in Older Age. The name “Bealtaine” comes from the ancient Celtic festival of that name celebrating springtime, freshness and renewal. SDCC’s Community Department and Libraries organised over 150 events across the county over the course of the month of May. There was a high level of attendance and participation at each of the events. This year’s Bealtaine Competition, organised by the Council’s Social Inclusion

Unit, was entitled “Use your imagination to submit an entry to show how creative you are”. The competition looked for older people to submit their entries to showcase their talents and skills from poetry to baking and painting. There were a large number of entries which were displayed in the Council’s offices in Tallaght. The awards were presented by the Councillor Charlie O’ Connor at the closing Ceremony. Bealtaine is co-ordinated by Age and Opportunity, the national organisation working to promote greater participation by older people in society.

COUNCILLOR CHARLIE O’CONNOR AND MEMBERS OF THE PALMERSTOWN ACTIVE RETIREMENT GROUP

“Whereas some politicians have done photo ops and have talked about the need for regulations, they have yet to table any legislation which would clear up the uncertainty surrounding the use of e-scooters. “The Fianna Fáil Bill permits the use of e-scooters on Irish roads, but it also lays down a number of safety requirements. We want to see less cars on the roads, less congestion and less emissions but we want people to be responsible and safe and to minimise the potential for any accidents and injuries. “Similar to other EU countries the Bill sets a maximum speed of 25 km/h for e-scooters and requires all e-scooters to be fitted with a speed limitation

device designed to prevent the vehicle from exceeding this speed. The Bill also makes it an offence to ride an e-scooter without due consideration for the safety of others, which is already an offence for bike users. “Ultimately this Bill will expand the remit of the Road Safety Authority to make recommendations regarding the safe use of e-scooters. Furthermore, it empowers the Minister for Transport to make any necessary regulations. Thus far the Minister has failed in his duty to all road users, leaving scooter users in a legal limbo, Gardaí with unenforceable obligations and pedestrians at risk”, concluded Deputy Curran.

VOICE OF LOCAL INDEPENDENTS STRONGER AFTER ELECTIONS

The election of Councillor Alan Edge in the Firhouse Bohernabreena local electoral area will ensure an even stronger independent voice for our communities, according to Dublin South West Independent Minister, Katherine Zappone. Welcoming the election of Cllr Edge, Minister Zappone added: “Alan has worked with my local team on a voluntary basis for the past three-years. He is passionate about the issues which impact on our communities and will work to ensure fairness and equality across all areas of

policy in the County Council. With a legal background and as a barrister he will be a strong addition to the Council Chamber. His election, together with a 22% share of the national vote for other independent candidates, has shown that politics has changed. People want alternatives and politicians who are not tied or bound by party politics. I look forward to continuing my work with Alan so together we can deliver for the people of Dublin South West at both a national and local level.”

REDUCED NUMBER OF GARDA RESOURCES IN RATHCOOLE RAISED IN DÁIL

John Curran T.D. has called the Garda resources in Rathcoole miniscule and ineffective for policing the growing population in the greater Rathcoole area. Deputy Curran was speaking in the Dáil recently, after securing a special debate on

the matter, with the Minister for Justice, Charlie Flanagan TD, he said; “A number of weeks ago, I attended a public meeting in City West Hotel on this issue regarding Garda resources in the greater Rathcoole area. It was a very well attended meeting.

HIGHLIGHTING THE SHORTAGE OF HOME CARE PACKAGES

People spoke of their own particular incidents and the response from An Garda Síochána. Since that meeting my office has received petition letters from residents in Rathcoole, Saggart and Newcastle on the issue.

“There is evidence of an increase in crime, as reported at the Joint Policing Committees, Burglary, for the first four months, in comparison to the previous ones, was up almost 50% in the area. Criminal damage was up 47%. Theft from motor vehicles was up 67%. Public order incidents were up 57%. “The people in Rathcoole, Saggart and Newcastle feel that they are being ignored. During the debate the Minister spoke of additional resources being allocated to DMR West Division. “However, there is no evidence to suggest that any of the additional deployment of Garda resources, that has occurred to date

has materialised in the Rathcoole area. Therein lies the problem. According to the Minister DMR West is increasing in Garda resources , but the number of Gardaí in Rathcoole remains at 14. This is the lowest ever recorded. People in Rathcoole deserve the level of service the Minister talked about in terms of a physical presence. It is not happening. “The Minister must bring this point directly to the Commissioner; that the area around Rathcoole, Newcastle and Saggart has a minuscule number of Gardaí, an ineffective and inefficient number to police the greater area that it is supposed to cover. I have appealed to the Minister to make that plea to the Garda Commissioner. I acknowledge that the numbers are being deployed in DMR west. I am specifically saying we need to increase them in Rathcoole,” concluded the Deputy.

APRIL HOMELESSNESS FIGURES INCREASE

Seán Crowe T.D. supporting the protest outside Leinster House to highlight the shortage of home care packages, accessible respite care, step down beds and inadequate supports to enable citizens who have an impairment to live an independent life. Clients from Firhouse CRC protesting outside Leinster House on the 8th of May, looking for Better Home Care Packages – more hours, consistency of staff and flexibility with hours to suit their needs and Accessible Respite Facilities – purpose built fully accessible with ceiling hoists within one hour’s drive from Dublin, adequately staffed with hospital beds and call bells and with its own accessible transport and catering facilities and 20 nights respite per year so that family / carers can get a much-deserved break and recharge their batteries.

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has said that this government is failing those who desperately need a roof over the heads as new Department of Housing figures for April 2019 show an increase in those experiencing homelessness. Deputy Ó Broin said: “The April homeless figures released by the Department of Housing show that

homelessness is up again since March. “There are now 10,378 people officially classified as homeless by the Department of Housing, including 3,794 children. “While there is a slight decrease in the number of homeless children and homeless families, the figures overall are not going in the right direction. “The Minister has called tackling

family homelessness ‘challenging’. It is a shame that he opposed positive solutions brought forward by the opposition which would have helped families being evicted by Buy to Let landlords. “We need to see radical change in policy direction. Unfortunately, I do not believe that this Minister or this government has any real interest in changing course.”

MOTORING LIFE WITH SPORTY NEW ŠKODA KAROQ By Breda Corrigan ‘SPORTLINE’ Czech car manufacturing giant, Škoda, has just released a sporty addition to it compact SUV line-up. The new Karoq Sportline brings with it an impressive host of exterior styling revisions, which include gloss black front grille inserts, gloss black rear diffuser, Sportline-specific exterior bumper design, black roof rails & mirror covers, and 18” ‘Mytikas’ black alloy wheels. The sporty theme continues inside, by way of a flat-bottomed sports leather steering wheel, Sportline-specific front seats with fabric upholstery, darkened headliner cloth, and an aluminium sports pedal cluster. The Karoq name, and its spelling, originate from the language of the Alutiiq, an indigenous tribe who live on an island off the southern coast of Alaska. The name KAROQ is a combination of the terms ‘KAA’RAQ’ (car) and ‘RUQ’ (arrow). The Karoq is one of a family of vehicles sharing the VW Group’s latest MQB platform – it’s effectively a sister-model to the SEAT Ateca, and is one of its chief rivals. Other competitors include the Peugeot 3008, Ford Kuga, VW Tiguan, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Renault Kadjar and the Toyota RAV4. Engines & Trim Levels; With the new Karoq there is a choice of four engines and three trims levels – Ambition, Style and Sportline. Petrol power is supplied courtesy of a 1.0TSI with 115bhp or a 1.5TSI with 150bhp. Diesel engines consist of a 1.6TDI with 115bhp or a 2.0TDI with 150bhp. A seven-speed automatic (DSG) gearbox is available with all but the 2.0TDI engine, but four-wheel-drive is reserved only for the 2.0 TDI – in 6-speed manual guise. Depending on the engine and drivetrain chosen, annual road tax will only cost

between €200 and €280, due to the low carbon footprint on offer. Test Car; My test car was a Karoq ‘Sportline’, 2.0TDI 150bhp, 6-speed manual, finished in striking Quartz Grey metallic paint. While the standard equipment in the entry-level ‘Ambition’ model is impressive, my Sportline model came with a ‘Bolero’ 8.0” colour touchscreen radio system with Bluetooth™, parking distance control with rear view camera, dual-zone airconditioning, light & rain assist, KESSY (keyless entry, start and exit system) with push button start, Smartlink with voice activation, LED headlights with dynamic headlight control, customisable interior ambient lighting, hill-hold control, rear privacy glass, front fog lights, Front Assist, and a host of standard comfort, convenience and safety features. The only optional extra fitted to my test car was Škoda’s Virtual Cockpit, which is very reasonably priced at €594. Spacious Cabin & Boot; The new Karoq’s practicality is boosted by massive front door pockets, which can each accommodate a 1.5-litre bottle of refreshments, a removable bin and four handy shopping bag hooks in the boot. These hooks can be easily slid along a plastic bar for to accommodate larger shopping bags if the need arises. The new Karoq provides ‘best-in-class’ boot space, with between 521 and 1,630-litres available depending on the positioning of the rear seats. There is even an umbrella stored beneath the front passenger seat – such is the attention to detail that goes into every Škoda. The cabin of the new Karoq will please both the driver and passengers in equal measure, with masses

of leg and headroom, making it easy to get comfortable for the journey ahead. A raised driving position combined with thin windscreen pillars, and big side windows, means visibility out the front, or side, is good. Sporty Dynamics; On the road, the Karoq Sportline feels agile and sporty, while the steering has a natural-weighted feel to it allowing the driver to swoop from corner to corner with confidence-inspiring accuracy. My test car provided efficient and refined performance, while the excellent chassis produced a good mix of comfort and

driving pleasure. With power ranging from 115bhp to 150bhp across the Karoq engine range, none of the petrol or diesel engines will disappoint even the most demanding of compact SUV drivers. Across the Karoq range, you can expect to achieve fuel consumption figures from 4.3l/100km to 5.5l/100km on an extra-urban driving cycle. Pricing; With on-the-road (OTR) prices starting at just €29,100, it is easy to see why Škoda refer to the new Karoq compact SUV as ‘The Compact with Impact’. The Karoq Sportline is priced from €34,850 OTR.

WALKERS TAKE ON KERRY CHALLENGE FOR BUTTERFLY SKIN Michelle Dunne from Muckross Park, Perrystown and Laura Haverty from Elm Park, Ranelagh, were among those who took part in the recent Debra Ireland Kerry Challenge to help raise vital funds for butterfly skin charity Debra Ireland. Debra’s inspirational Kerry Challenge involved 3 days of trekking through the beautiful Dingle Peninsula.

The charity supports people living with EB (epidermolysis bullosa). This rare and incredibly painful genetic skin condition causes the skin layers and internal body linings to blister and wound at the slightest touch. Michelle and Laura were among over 120 participants from around the country supporting the charity. The Challenge

is open to everyone from seasoned runners to first time amblers. “The Kerry Challenge is a fantastic way to make a real difference in people’s lives while meeting new friends and exploring Dingle’s great outdoors,” said Debra Ireland’s Head of Marketing and Fundraising Judith Gilsenan. “Teams and individuals can walk or run between 10

and 25km a day over two or three days in the beautiful but rugged terrain of the Dingle Peninsula.” All profits raised from the event go directly to the charity Debra Ireland which supports the 300 people in Ireland living with EB (epidermolysis bullosa). The condition

can range from mild to severe. Severe forms can be fatal in infancy or lead to dramatically reduced life expectancy, due to a range of complications from the disease.

Patients need wound care and bandaging for up to

several hours a day and the condition tends to become increasingly debilitating and disfiguring over time. Adult patients with severe forms are also extremely susceptible to an aggressive form of skin cancer. There are currently no treatments or cure for EB.

Say this prayer for three days. Promise publication and favour will be granted no matter how impossible. Never known to fail. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning that I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly recreate me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged areas. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ Our Lord Amen. L.R
