OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL CLUBS IN NEW €40 MILLION SPORTS CAPITAL PROGRAMME

The opening dates for the 2018 round of Sports Capital Programme funding has been confirmed by Frances Fitzgerald T.D. and local clubs are encouraged to consider their projects for the scheme. “I am pleased to confirm that a new €40 million Sports Capital Programme will be open to applications from 9am on Friday 7th September until 5pm on Friday 19th October, 2018,” said Fitzgerald. Deputy Fitzgerald detailed the application

process and important dates for clubs, saying; “Applications are welcomed from sports clubs, community organisations and schools who are looking to develop sports facilities in their area.

“To apply, groups must register through the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sports Online Sports Capital Register (OSCAR) system on line. Registration opens today and closes at 5pm on Friday the 5th of October. “Once registered, groups will be able to

make applications from 9am on Friday the 7th of September until 5pm on Friday the 19th of October. “In advance of the opening date, I would advise committees and interested parties to check out the resources available on this website to make sure that they meet all the relevant criteria and to get the ball rolling on the paperwork required.” She also outlined a number of changes to the scheme this year, stating; “The 2018

round of funding has a number of changes to the previous 2017 scheme such as; changes in assessment methods to reduce the amount of invalid applications, greater priority to applications from disadvantaged areas and projects that promote the sharing of sports facilities with other clubs and the wider community.

These changes will hopefully simplify the process as one of the most frustration aspects of these applications has been when they come back invalid due to technical or legal reasons. “I particularly welcome the new agreement reached with the Department of Education which means that all schools can apply for the Sports Capital Programme as long as they do so in conjunction with a sports club. By working together, communities can access funding that benefits the school during school hours and local clubs outside of school times. This is a great opportunity and I would encourage local schools and clubs to

SIMON COMMUNITY’S LATEST STUDY HIGHLIGHTS GROWING HOUSING CHALLENGES

Seán Crowe T.D. has said that the findings of the latest study by the Simon Community reflects the mounting challenges facing families and individuals seeking accommodation across the state, particularly in urban areas like Dublin.

The Sinn Féin TD was responding to the ‘Locked Out of the Market XI’ study which found that just 8% of rental properties surveyed across 11 areas are priced within the reach of households receiving Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) and Rent Supplement. Deputy Seán Crowe said: “The Simon Community’s ‘Locked Out of the Market XI’ study looked at the cost of renting in eleven locations across State. It highlights the mounting housing challenges facing families and individuals across the State, but particularly in urban areas like Dublin. “This latest report found

that out of 530 properties available to rent, 489 were above the HAP/ Rent Supplement limits. Therefore only 41 of these available properties were within the limits of the four categories of household within the study, which were singles, couples, couple/ one parent one child, and couple/one parent and two children.

“No properties were available in Galway city centre, Limerick city centre, or in Portlaoise across all four categories, and this is a growing area of concern. “Furthermore, just one property was available across all categories in Athlone, Dublin city centre, North Kildare, Sligo town, and Waterford city centre. “This is the lowest recorded point in a downward trend that has been declining since Rent Supplement and HAP limits were increased in July 2016.

“This report further highlights how private rented sector government subsidised accommodation is out of reach for a lot of citizens and it is pushing more and more people into homelessness.” Crowe continued: “Thousands of people remain trapped in emergency accommodation, they are locked out of the private rented market because rents are too high and supply is too low.

“The lack of social housing means people must turn to the private rental market for accommodation, but for those relying on State housing benefits, this solution is not working. “The gap between housing benefit payments and market rents is too wide for people who are struggling, and with more and more people homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. “In my opinion the only

sustainable and long-term solution to end the current crisis is to build more social and affordable housing.

“I am also, on the back of

this report from the Simon Community, reiterating my call for the current government to double the capital expenditure on social and affordable

housing in Budget 2019. This move must also be accompanied with the introduction of real rent certainty and security of tenure for tenants.”

WAITING LIST FOR VITAL HOME SUPPORT SERVICES CONTINUES TO LENGTHEN

6,117 elderly people have been assessed & approved but continue to be left waiting for home support services -*

John Curran T.D. has said failing to properly resource the provision of Home Support Services is adversely impacting on older people and their loved ones. The Deputy obtained figures from the Health Service

Executive this month which reveal that some 6,117 people are now waiting for essential home support services despite having been previously assessed and approved. “The figures themselves are damning but even more concerning is the fact that the HSE do not have the ability to determine the length of time these people have been waiting – it could be months and even years.”

he commented.

“Week in, week out I am meeting families who are desperate for home support services for their elderly loved one. It is often the case that these families are on leave from work to care for the person or are struggling to balance helping out with their own day to day lives. This can be hugely stressful on family relationships. “The HSE National Service Plan 2018 set out for the provision of 17.094m home support hours to be delivered to 50,500 people. But by the end of April this year that number had already been exceeded;

52,659 people were in receipt of Home Support Services while a further 6,117 languish on a waiting list.

“These people have already been assessed by the HSE and it has been determined that they need additional home supports. It makes little sense to delay giving home care supports to people that need them. In fact, it goes against the Government’s stated aim of ensuring people can continue living in their home if they so choose to do so. “The HSE do not have the funding needed to meet demand and it is therefore

NEW ONLINE COURSE TARGETS IRISH FOOD START-UPS

A new ‘Digital School of Food’ was launched in Dublin recently, aimed at attracting a new stream of food start-ups and helping them succeed. An initiative of the Dublin Food Chain and the Local Enterprise Offices in the Dublin region, the online programme is the first of its kind in Europe, giving food entrepreneurs access to expert advice from their own home or office. The new Digital School of Food is an e-learning initiative that targets food producers from idea through to start-up and growth stages. It consists of an online platform that will help new and innovative food businesses to start-up and succeed. Supported by Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia and the Dublin Institute of Technology, the idea for the project came as a result of the strong interest among food entrepreneurs to learn about succeeding in business from key industry experts. Announcing the launch of the new platform, the Chair of the Network of Local Enterprise Offices, Oisin Geoghegan,

highlighted the importance of cultivating the food sector, saying: “We have seen a lot of innovative and excellent food start-ups emerging in Ireland over the last number of years across the country. Local Enterprise Offices are very keen to ensure that start-ups in the food sector are given every opportunity to not just survive, but to grow and scale. Setting up a new food business, of itself, can be relatively straightforward. However, growing that business to make it successful and sustainable in the long term presents a far greater and more complex series of challenges.

entrepreneurs access to sound commercial guidance and mentoring to help them get their products onto shelves, and also gives emerging food entrepreneurs and those who want to begin their food production journey, practical support to bring their idea or product to life. The model is based on an e-learning platform which contains tips, advice and

information from existing producers, all related to succeeding in the food sector. The programme is available to food businesses in the Dublin region initially, following which, it will be rolled out nationally. It will be made available free of charge to qualifying businesses that register online through http://www.digitalschooloffood.ie/

That is why we need to ensure that our food entrepreneurs are provided with the right mix of support services so that they can identify opportunities and avoid pitfalls. This e-learning platform is a clever and very practical way to help small food businesses to learn the ropes at their own pace and in their own work environment.” Representatives from the 4 Dublin Local Enterprise Offices, Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia, Food Producers

FINISHED THE LEAVING CERT – WHAT TO DO NEXT?

The CAO route is not for everyone, some people wish to do shorter courses or do a course to allow for entry into employment. The further education and training sector is very diverse. Post-Leaving Cert (PLC) courses offer a valuable, vocationally oriented qualification in colleges of further education across Ireland. Courses cover areas such as business, computers, media, accounting, arts, administration and even English as a second language. Many PLC courses can allow learners to go directly into employment but it can also be an entry route to third-level.

Even those who do go through the third-level system may return to further education to upskill, change career direction, or simply to learn for the sake of learning. Rathmines College is

a college of further education and offers a range of one and two year study options in key skill areas. Now more than ever employers are looking for highly skilled and trained graduates. The college is a studentcentred, dynamic provider constantly developing and adapting courses to suit leaner and employer needs and courses include work experience. While the courses can equip learners to go straight into the work place they also provide opportunities to progress on to Institutes of Technology or Universities in many cases with exemptions. This means students who successfully complete relevant awards can gain access to year 2 or 3 of many Degree programmes.

his positive attitude is helping him overcome every obstacle. It was fantastic to see him there, at the annual event he helped start,” said Cllr. Emer Higgins who attended the event. “Tricia O’Halloran, Neville Graver and the Community Council members and Centre staff, the RAMs in Rythm and Garda Band put on fantastic event for older people in Rathcoole, Newcastle and Saggart many of whom are clients of the Day Care Centre and Lisheen Nursing Home. One of the Gardai did an incredible rendition of Michael Bubble and it was great to see so many people up dancing and celebrating their golden years. Well done to Tricia and her team on another fantastic community event,” concluded Cllr. Emer Higgins.

O’CONNOR WELCOMES BOHERNABREENA CEMETERY CLARIFICATION

Cllr Charlie O’Connor, has welcomed clarification from South Dublin CoCo in respect of representation he made on behalf of a number of people regarding traffic movements in Bohernabreena Cemetery.

SDCC responded with the following “A system of removable bollards is in place in Bohernabreena graveyard which is intended to control access around the graveyard. In general visitors to the graveyard should park their cars in one or other of the available car parks and then make their way on foot to their family graves. The bollards in question were installed at the request of the elected members most recently following a motion of the Tallaght Area Committee in Jan 2016. The bollards were installed in an effort to combat anti-social and criminal activity in the Graveyard including illegal dumping, damage to graves by vehicles and in the interest of pedestrian safety. The bollards remain locked in

place at all times and are removed only by SDCC staff when access is required for a funeral procession, grave digger, monumental sculptor, or maintenance work. SDCC regrets having to take the decision to implement the installation of bollards; however these measures have proven to be successful. Having recently reviewed the situation, the Council is not in a position to remove the bollards on a permanent basis. However,

the Council may be in a position to facilitate access to the restricted part of the Cemetery in exceptional circumstance and by prior arrangement with the Burial Grounds Section by phoning 01 414 9234” According to Charlie O’Connor there will be people who regularly visit the Cemetery dissatisfied with the Council’s response and he has undertaken to continue to monitor the situation on their behalf.

TAX AND WELFARE SYSTEMS UNFAIRLY TREAT COHABITING COUPLES Seán Crowe T.D. has called on the Government to tackle the unfair and discriminatory treatment that unmarried cohabiting couples receive in the tax and social welfare systems. The Sinn Féin TD pointed out that if a couple are cohabiting under the current system they cannot claim certain tax credits and share their tax liabilities, however the social welfare system treats them the same as married couples. Deputy Seán Crowe said: “Our current tax system discriminates against cohabiting couples who are not married and do not want to marry, but the social welfare system treats them the same as married couples. This is an unfair system and it needs reform. “According to the Citizens Information Board, choosing to be assessed as a single person when you are married or in a civil partnership is unfavourable. It is the same for cohabiting couples, but under the

current system a couple who are not legally married or in a civil partnership have no option but to be assessed as two single people. “This means they cannot transfer unused tax credits or their standard cut-off points. They cannot claim home carers tax credits and they cannot claim tax for a partner who might be on low pay or out of work. “A married couple or those in a civil partnership can be financially better off by 20%, a substantial amount in anyone’s estimation. Such a considerable saving is important for a couple who are more than likely caught in the current rental and housing crisis, and like many others, paying a small fortune for accommodation. “If a partner in a cohabiting relationship gets ill, it falls on the other half in the relationship to nurture and financially provide without any active support or help from the State. If the partner dies and there is a shared property there is a

substantial inheritance tax burden to be carried by the surviving partner. “Their cohabiting status is however means tested and taken into full account by the current social welfare system if a partner is made redundant or in need of state supports and assistance. “If you are cohabiting and you get sick, an application for a full or doctor only medical card is means tested and your partner’s income and assets will be decisive in whether you get a medical card or not. “Our current tax system denies cohabiting couples fair treatment, while our social welfare system goes to great lengths to try monitor relationships and cohabiting status of couples. As a legislator I find this demeaning and totally wrong. “The current system needs radical reform. It is discriminatory against couples and needs a new approach from

the Government, but particularly the Ministers for Finance and for Social Protection. They need to collectively work together and come up with common

sense and practical solutions that will end this unfair system that impacts so negatively against cohabiting couples. “We should not have a system

that supports one couple and discriminates against another because they have a piece of paper that says they are married or are in a civil partnership.”

FUNDRAISER FOR DOWN SYNDROME IRELAND IN MEMORY OF LUCY DOLAN Sunday August 26th saw the Fundraising Day in memory of Lucy Dolan, take place in Leisureplex Stillorgan, with 200 guests attending on the day. The event was held in memory of Lucy Dolan. Lucy passed away from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in 2017, at the age of just 49, and was remarkably well-liked by everyone who had the pleasure of working with her. The day was open to Lucy’s work colleagues, friends and the general public, and was well supported by suppliers and contractors who worked with Lucy over the years. The fun family event was set up with the aim of raising funds for The Down Syndrome Centre, a charity organisation very close to Lucy’s heart, and family screening for Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. The party atmosphere was clear for all to see, with upbeat music, party lighting and food and drink for all as the guests enjoyed games of bowling, Quasar,

pool and even a trip into the Zoo Adventureland play area for the little ones. The day was concluded with a huge raffle, with over 30 amazing prizes given out. Some of Lucy’s family were in attendance throughout the day, and they were on hand to help pick out the prize winners. In addition to the fundraising event, a GoFundMe page was set up to aid in raising as much funds as possible for the two causes, and the generosity of those who knew and worked with Lucy was shown in abundance, with over €11,000 currently raised on the GoFundMe page alone. All-in-all, with funds raised through entry tickets to the event, raffle tickets and the GoFundMe page, the total raised for the charities has currently surpassed the €20,000 mark!

DATE FOR 4 DISTRICTS FUN DAY ANNOUNCED

Local Councillor Emer Higgins has announced details of the sixth annual 4 Districts Fun Day which takes place on Saturday 14th September in Rathcoole.

“The 2018 4 Districts Fun Day will take place on Saturday 15th September in the Rathcoole Community Centre from 1.30pm-5pm. To mark our sixth year running the event for the communities of Rathcoole, Newcastle, Saggart and Brittas we’ve some special additions to the popular line up including a dog show, choochoo train for the kiddies and an inflatable obstacle course,” said local Councillor for the area Emer Higgins who helps organise the event. “There will be lots of entertainment on offer for the whole family with everything from a fairground carousel, music by local musicians including the RAMS in Rhythm, and local Ireland’s Got Talent finalist Affia, pop-up market stalls, magic shows, a toddlers area, a Dublin Civil Defence Fire brigade and Garda motorbike and horse,

sports competitions run by our local clubs and a shows by Dancity and the Rathcoole Twirlers,” continued Higgins, the new Leader of the Fine Gael Group on South Dublin. “As always, the attractions will all be primarily free of charge and monies raised through the raffle and BBQ will be donated to the 4 Districts Day Care Centre. We have a small organising committee who work throughout the summer to put this event together including the regulars of Neville Graver, Treasa Kelly, Christy McDonnell, Tricia O’Halloran and Anne O’Riordan who sit on that committee with me and do amazing work. The event wouldn’t be possible without the support of the staff at the Rathcoole Community Centre, South Dublin County Council, and our sponsors who make the day happen each year. Mark September 15th in your diary because this is one day you won’t want to miss,” concluded Cllr. Emer Higgins, local Councillor for Clondalkin, Newcastle and Rathcoole.

PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT SELECTS LOCAL ELECTION CANDIDATES IN DUBLIN MID WEST

People Before Profit selects local election candidates

At a meeting of members on 27th August People Before Profit Dublin Mid West selected two candidates to run in the local elections in May 2019. The sitting councillor for Clondalkin LEA Madeleine Johansson was selected to stand in the new Fonthill-Palmerstown LEA which takes in the areas of North Clondalkin, Palmerstown and South East Lucan. Clondalkin native and local activist Kevin Creagh was selected to stand in the Clondalkin LEA. Cllr Madeleine Johansson said: “I am honoured to have been selected by our members to contest the next local election. I have been representing the population of Clondalkin for the past 2 years and will continue to work very hard to represent the whole of Clondalkin, as well as the additional areas of Palmerstown and South East Lucan. We need a strong left on the council to be the voice for ordinary people and to expose the

establishment parties.”

Clondalkin local area representative Kevin Creagh commented: “I have lived in Clondalkin all my life and I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to stand for election to represent my area. There is

a great community spirit in the area but unfortunately that is not matched by adequate local services and amenities. People Before Profit is a radical party that believes in People Power as the path to change, and that’s what I want to represent.

SITE SECURED Minister FOR KNOCKLYON GAELSCOIL Zappone added: facilities. The new school

The site for a new building for Gaelscoil Knocklyon has been secured, according to local Independent Minister, Katherine Zappone. The Minister says she has received confirmation from the Department of Education that the final legal obstacles to securing the site have been cleared and the purchase complete. Minister Zappone says the move is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of local parents, teaching staff and management.

“After over two-decades we have taken another step forward to ensure that Gaelscoil Knocklyon will have a permanent building.

I have been in close contact with my colleague the Minister for Education, Richard Bruton, to bring us to this point. It is important that momentum is maintained so that the children studying in Knocklyon will have safe, comfortable and secure classrooms and other

will be built under the Department of Education ‘Design and Build’ approach, which should ensure that the project continues to advance.

This campaign has been a long-running one, but those involved have never lost hope and remained focused throughout on securing their goal. As a local Independent TD I am looking forward to the day when the ribbon will finally be cut on the new school.

ROWLAGH PRIMARY HEALTH CARE CENTRE TO COMMENCE ON SITE EARLY 2019 -After years of inaction, planning permission was finally granted in July 2018 to deliver primary health care to North Clondalkin John Curran T.D. has welcomed the HSE’s commitment to commence construction on site of the new Rowlagh Primary Health Care Centre as early as Q1 2019. Deputy Curran was commenting after receiving information from the HSE through a Parliamentary Question that construction of this Health Centre is to commence in Q1 2019 with an expected completion in Q3 2020. “After years of inaction, planning permission was finally granted in July 2018 to deliver primary health care to North Clondalkin and I have continued to follow up on this matter with the HSE so that this project is delivered in North Clondalkin in a timely manner. “It’s been 6 years since the Rowlagh Primary Care Centre was first announced under the infrastructure stimulus package with a planned completion date of late 2016. 3 Ministers

for Health later and finally the project has planning permission and a commitment from the HSE to begin construction early next year. I am urging the Health Service Executive to continue with its progress on the much needed Rowlagh Primary Care Centre. “The provision of primary care and multi-disciplinary services in a community setting plays a crucial role in ensuring that those who do not need to be in acute care are removed from a hospital setting. “Despite repeated promises there have been no primary care services in our area, which has a population of over 45,000 people, for quite some time. “The delivery of Primary Care Centres in the greater Clondalkin and Lucan area has faced alarming delays to date but thankfully we are now seeing some slight movement. “The proposed development

in Rowlagh when operational will be a significant and substantial health service facility in our community; this is something that I have been campaigning for a long time now. “The centre will employ 36 staff and provide a substantial range of primary care services including a GP Clinic, a Nurse managed Clinic, suites for speech & language therapy, occupational and physiotherapy therapy, a dental Clinic, a paediatrics suite and a Mental Health

Suite from 9am-6pm every weekday and some out of hour GP services. “Every effort must be made now to ensure that the HSE fulfil its commitment to this centre and allow the people of North Clondalkin access to essential Health Care. “I am looking forward to the construction of this project but I will persist in highlighting the need for this centre to be completed and operational as soon as possible and that they encounter no unnecessary delays,” he concluded.

LUCAN’S VERY OWN TEAM JAMES RUN FOR BARRETSTOWN

Newsgroup recently spoke with Vicki Casserly, Mum of James. James Casserly is a wonderful 12 year old who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was two which affects his core and lower limbs mostly. This leads him to have difficulty with independent walking and balance. When he was 6, he had a selective dorsal rhizotomy April 2012, a

type of neurosurgery which eliminates the spasticity in his body which is a result of his Cerebral Palsy. James endured intensive physiotherapy as part of his recovery where he had to relearn to move and walk again. More recently he was diagnosed with idiopathic polyarticular juvenile

arthritis, affecting most of his joints as well as Osteoporosis. As a result of this, he suffers from pain and lethargy most days. However James has a very can do attitude and a massive smile. He likes to put the ability into disability and show everyone he is just like any other twelve year old, but in Vicki’s eyes an exceptional one. After

he was diagnosed with JIA, Crumlin Hospital referred him for a week of Fun in Barretstown. In March 2015, the family went to Barretstown for a weekend of the famous #serious fun and James loved it. James was then invited down for a week of fun on his own in July as part of their summer camp. Vicki added “This was James first time away from home without family. He came home oozing of confidence, with a smile that could light a room, revived and excited. All sickness forgotten about. Barretstown instantly became extremely special to James”. As part of the treatment for JIA, treatments involve chemotherapy and biologic treatments. Unfortunately due to the nature of James condition, the medication was not fully effective. Before Christmas James became a little down, as you would knowing things still were not under control. At this point, Vicki met Mark, of insanity fitzone. Vicki added “We explained to Mark, what was ongoing

with James, introduced them and they instantly hit it off. Mark kindly offered to help James get back on his feet. Movement is so important for anyone suffering from JIA, although painful, in the long term, it will help. Going to the gym gave James another burst of energy.”

As both James and Mark like a challenge, they came up with an idea of running a race, which escalated to the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon which is 26.2miles. When asked what charity James would like to do it for, without thought he declared Barretstown as it is so special to him and he would like lots of children to share in the smiles and fun of his time spent there. Vicki said “Not one to miss an opportunity, James set a goal of raising minimum of € 10,000 for Barretstown, which to date, we have exceeded to in excess of € 85,000”. With Marks help, James was set to become the youngest person to ever complete the Dublin marathon in a wheelchair. And he did. He has since

completed his second Dublin Marathon with Mark. Team James has grown and evolved. Daddy, Dan Naughton, took up running and completed Limerick Marathon with James, Dan is currently competing in the race series and will this year complete Dublin City Marathon with his son. James is very excited to have the opportunity to do this alongside his Dad. This September 16th, as part of South Dublin County Council’s Health and Well Being Week, sponsored by SDCC, Team James have taken on the task, and aspiration of James, to host their own 5km and 2km race ‘Team James Run for Barretstown’. The Inaugural Event is set to be held in Corkagh Park, Clondalkin, where they are setting out to have #seriousfun all in aid of Barretstown. James, along with help of family and friends are hoping for an epic event and inclusive event for all. You can register at: https://www.popupraces. ie/events/team-james-runfor-barretstown/

In this edition of the paper, Romaine Scally, Principal in the Firm of Romaine Scally and Co, Solicitors, deals with various legal matters. As always please send your queries to Romaine Scally, Solicitors, Main Street, Tallaght Village, Dublin 24. Telephone 4599506, Email – legal@scally.ie Question – I am in the process of applying to purchase my local authority house. I believe that I am eligible to apply and want to know where is the best place to borrow from? I wonder if you could give some guidance in this matter. Answer– You may be eligible to borrow from the local authority itself and if so, you should check their rates. Given some of the competitive rates available for purchasers, especially first time purchasers now from the lending institutions, their rates may not be any more favourable. You should most certainly shop around. There are a number of attractive options and indeed incentives to first time buyers. Just recently, the Minister for Housing has announced a number of initiatives including a Government backed Mortgage Scheme for first time buyers struggling to obtain finance. Under the Scheme, a person or couple can borrow up to 90% of the value of a new, second hand or self-build home to a maximum of €320,000.00 in the greater Dublin area, Cork and Galway, and up to €250,000.00 for the rest of the country. Borrowers will pay a fixed interest rate of 2% to 2.25% for 25 – 30 years. Income cannot exceed €50,000.00 for a single person or €75,000.00 for a couple. The idea is to take the risk out of mortgage loans for first time buyers because the rate will be fixed for the duration of the loan and first time buyers will have the certainty of knowing what their outlays are every month without the worry of huge fluctuations. Now, many people who might have been refused loans from the regular Banks or Building Societies because of the fluctuations in interest rates, will now be eligible to get loans. These are good rates of interest and some €200 million has been set aside for the first part of the Scheme. The Scheme is due to come into play on February 1st and is designed exclusively for first time buyers. You will need to apply through your local authority who are overseeing the Scheme. Obviously you will have to qualify but on the basis that you do qualify under the Scheme then, you may be eligible for a subsidised loan at an interest rate which is secured for the duration of the mortgage.

We hope that this has been helpful and we wish you the very best of luck.

It will come as no surprise that the new Peugeot 5008 shares many features with the French manufacturer’s latest 3008 (Irish Car of the Year 2018), with the obvious difference being that the larger 5008 has a third row of seats in the back. These can be folded down to free up extra boot space when the need arises, with an impressive 952-litres of space available when in 5-seater mode. However, fold the middle row seats and this cargo-capacity increases to a huge 2,150-litres, making it one of the roomiest cars in its class. Thanks to a wheelbase of 2,840mm, there is ample room in the front and middle rows for tall occupants, with the rear-most seats being ideally suited to the smaller members of the family (as is the norm in this market segment). At 4,641mm long, the new Peugeot 5008 is a big car and strikes a dashing pose thanks to its distinctive design. The long bonnet, upright grille and sharplooking lights are the exterior highlights, but the inside has seen dramatic changes too. High-quality materials are used all around and this helps the cabin feel very upmarket. Build quality is top class too – so much so that the cabin of the new 5008 is a serene place to be, even at speed. The new 5008’s engine range is carried over from the 3008, which uses the same

platform. Petrol power comes courtesy of a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, PureTech engine with 130 bhp and a 1.6-litre THP turbocharged engine with 165bhp. A 1.6-litre turbo-diesel (BlueHDi) engine is available with either 100bhp or 120bhp depending on the model chosen, while a 2.0-litre BlueHDi engine comes with either 150bhp or 180bhp. Opt for the BlueHDi engine with 100bhp and it will be fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox. All other engines are mated to a 6-speed manual, while a slick-shifting 6-speed automatic gearbox is available with the 130bhp petrol engine and the 120bhp and 180bhp diesel engines. There are 5 specification levels available in the new Peugeot 5008 – Access, Active, Allure, GT-Line and GT. Every model comes with Peugeot’s new ‘i-Cockpit’ which features a configurable 12.3-inch headup digital instrument display, as well as a separate touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, a compact multi-function leather steering wheel, LED daytimerunning lights, rear LED lights featuring Peugeot’s signature ‘claw-effect’, Lane Departure Warning (LDW), speed limit recognition, stop & start function, semiautomatic air-conditioning with touch sensitive controls and an electronic parking brake, along with a host of other comfort, safety and security features. My test car was a new Peugeot 5008 Allure 1.2-litre PureTech 130bhp 6-speed manual finished in attractive Cumulus Grey metallic paint. With 230Nm of torque on tap, this engine provides plenty of forward motion and covers the 0-100km/h sprint in just 10.9-seconds, while consuming as little as 4.5-litres of petrol for every 100km driven on an extra-urban driving cycle. Annual road tax is just €200 thanks to low emissions of 124g/km – helped in no small part by the standard stop & start system. This 1.2-litre engine is so good that it has – for the third year running – been awarded the hugely impressive

accolade of ‘International Engine of the Year’ for the 1.0-litre to 1.4-litre category with a panel of 65 industry experts from 31 countries coming to the unanimous decision. This PureTech engine is a revelation in terms of refinement, performance and efficiency, boasting optimum power and low consumption. The 5008 does drive and handle exceptionally well for a big seven-seat SUV, feeling much more agile than many of its rivals. The driving position and steering wheel adjustment are excellent, allowing the driver to see the dials over the top of

the steering wheel. Rivals to the new Peugeot 5008 include the Skoda Kodiaq, Nissan X-Trail, Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, Ford S-Max and Renault Grand Scenic. If you are in the market for a sophisticated, practical and stylish 7-seater that combines efficiency with high levels of safety and technological equipment, then the stunning new Peugeot 5008 is well worth consideration. Prices start at just €29,345 (ex works) and all new 5008’s come with Peugeot’s 5-year warranty (T’s & C’s apply).

WEIGHT LOSS WONDER WOMAN CLARE CONWAY

Clare Conway, mother of four, struggled for years with her weight and tried numerous different weight loss plans. Clare, now 42 recalls seeing photographs of herself after a Christmas work party. “I felt disgusted at what I saw in the photos in the photos,” admits Clare. “I was having fun and laughing on the outside, but on the inside I was miserable; I knew something had to change.” In the new year a work colleague told Clare that she had joined a local Slimming World group. “I had tried Slimming World before,” explains Clare. “But that time I wasn’t ready to give it one hundred percent. I heard that this group was so friendly I decided to join the very next week, but I wasn’t content to wait… I went out and got my groceries and started there and then.” On January 13th, 2016, Clare joined Sandra’s Slimming World group in St. Mark’s GAA club in Springfield with her friend. “I was apprehensive,” Clare remembers. “Would I be the biggest in the room? Would I be able to stick to the plan this time?” When Clare entered the room she instantly felt like she was not alone. She felt that everyone in that group had the same goal in mind… to lose weight. “I sat down for the new member talk,” remembers Clare. “And my consultant Sandra made me feel so welcome and reassured. She made me feel like nothing was impossible.”

Clare weighed 19 stone and 2 and a half pound on that first day. Clare remembers crying having seen those figures on the scales. “My biggest fear,” explains Clare. “Was not being around for my children and two grandchildren. I was a heart attack waiting to happen and was taking tablets for high blood pressure. I felt exhausted and emotionally drained all of the time.” Clare explains that her youngest son is on the autistic spectrum. “He can sometimes be a danger to himself, and I needed to be able to react quickly should he begin to hurt himself or others, but at 19 stone it was difficult.” Clare was determined to make this work for her family and for herself. Clare remembers how on that first week how much food was available to her through food optimising with Slimming World. “Even the kids were enjoying all of the freshly cooked meals I was making. Who would’ve thought you could eat chips, eggs & beans and still lose weight,” Clare smiles. Clare lost 5 pounds that first week with Slimming World. She remembers how motivated she felt when she stepped off the scales. “Now I knew I could do this,” says Clare. “I knew this was for me.” Clare talks about how, as the weight continued to fall off, she regained her confidence. “I began to buy clothes again! Chores about the house became easier to manage. I started to feel like myself again.” Clare never missed group and as time went on, she began to help out on the group’s social team.

“The group is so supportive,” says Clare. “They cheered me along on my good weeks and picked me up on my bad weeks.” Clare reached her target weight by December 2017 having lost a fantastic 8 stone and 7 pounds. During that period, Clare won the group’s Woman of the Year, Miss Slinky and Greatest Loser each two years consecutively. Her dress size also dropped from a size 26 to a size 10. Clare advises anyone who’s thinking of joining Slimming World to just do it. “And stay to group,” Clare recommends. “I could not have done it without the support of my consultant and my group.” “I started my journey for my family,” recalls Clare. “But I gradually realised that I wanted this for myself – and that it’s okay to want to be happy for yourself. We’re all entitled to be happy!”

Clare lost her weight with Sandra who runs groups on Wednesday mornings 9.30am in St Mark’s GAA Club Springfield and Friday mornings 9.30am & 11.30am in The Maldron Hotel Tallaght. You can contact Sandra on 0851484669.
