ANSWERS NEEDED ON ADDITIONAL SCHOOL CLEANING COSTS
Local Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe has called for clearer answers to be given to School Principals and Schools Boards regarding the funding for additional cleaning costs for schools when they finally return following the postCOVID-19 lockdown.

“Before the pandemic situation hit, many schools were already struggling to afford the
cost of basic cleaning services and some have been put in the difficult position of asking pupil’s parents to fork out monthly contributions for cleaning costs to help plug ongoing funding gaps. “Months ago, I put in parliamentary questions to the Minister for Education Joe McHugh TD asking him what supports he would give to schools and his answer was to say that it was a matter for School Boards and Principals. That is not good enough. “Due to the pandemic situation it is clear that extra cleaning and hygiene measures will be essential for schools in order to protect the health of pupils, teachers and the wider community. “Any new government will have to ensure that sufficient additional funds are allocated for this extra cleaning, so schools can prioritise safety without having to worry about struggling to pay these additional costs.”

LOCAL YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS THRIVE IN UNCERTAIN TIMES The Youth Entrepreneur of the Year competition is a highlight of the Foróige year where the Top nine youth driven businesses in the country, who have participated in the NFTE Youth Entrepreneurship Programme, are invited to present their achievements to an expert panel of Judges. The competition took place online this year with young people taking part in both regional and semi final competitions to be selected as a finalist. The Foróige Innovator of the Year finalists included;
Catie Byrne, aged 15, from St.Dominic’s College, Ballyfermot with her business Catie’s Scrunchies. Catie’s Handmade Scrunchies, inspired by her mother’s love of upcycling and desire to be environmentally conscious, sources materials for the scrunchies from old clothing to avoid contributing to “fast fashion”. Seán Campbell, CEO Foróige said “The NFTE Programme changes the lives of young people by enabling them to develop core skills in business and enterprise, and in doing so, helping them to unlock their individual talents and potential. It puts the career path of ‘entrepreneur’ firmly in the sights of the young participants and gives them an ‘I can and I will’ attitude that is quite remarkable. This attitude has enabled these young people to persevere through the past few turbulent months, to continue with the programme and to develop
their impressive businesses. “We have been incredibly fortunate to receive Dormant Accounts funding through the Department of Education and Skills and corporate support from basis.point and JP Morgan to grow the Foróige NFTE programme. Over 4,000 young people and 120 Schools and Youth Projects right across the country took part this year and this is something that we are incredibly proud of.

HISTORIC STRUCTURES IN SAGGART AND NEWCASTLE TO BENEFIT FROM FUNDING
Funding will be allocated to the owners of historic and protected structures in Saggart and Newcastle to carry out essential repairs and maintenance. Emer Higgins TD said “South Dublin Co Co and custodians of protected sites will receive €40,000 for small-scale and labourintensive projects to repair and safeguard built heritage. My colleague,
Josepha Madigan, TD, has announced that a total of 449 heritage projects will benefit from over €4.3m under this year’s Historic Structures Fund (HSF) and Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS).”
“The funding is released as we move to phase 2 of the roadmap to reopen our economy. It will help provide employment for many small
businesses, conservation specialists and tradespeople involved in heritage-related construction activity in our area. “The schemes will play a vital role in helping communities to regenerate the areas where they live and work, and to protect our built heritage for future generations. “The supports, administered by local authorities, invest
COVID 19 RENT SUPPLEMENT PAYMENTS INCREASE BY 33% IN 3 MONTHS
Local TD for Dublin Mid West, Mark Ward has called on the government to do more to promote the availability of rent supplement for renters who may be struggling to meet rental costs. The call comes as figures show that the Covid 19 rent supplement payments have increased by 33% since March, with 6,500 claims in payment.
which if granted, would mean an increase in those claiming rent supplement during the first three months of the pandemic reached 42%. “The Department of Social Protection has been very slow to both promote the availability of rent supplement and to communicate the revised criteria for applications.
Teachta Ward said: “As of the 11th of March 2020, 15,264 households were in receipt of Rent Supplement from the Department of Social Protection. “As of the 25th of May, that figure has risen to 20,400, an increase of 33%. “There are now 6,500 Covid19 rent supplement claims in payment. “In Dublin there are 2502 currently in receipt of the Covid-19 rent supplement with a further 755 number of claims pending. “Across the State there are 1,900 claims pending
“Initial responses from the renters survey Sinn Féin launched last Friday indicated that many renters were unaware of the availability of this payment despite being worried about accumulating debt. “The government must work with all parties, and representatives of tenants and landlords to come up with a rent arrears debt resolution process post-Covid-19 that does not heap the full burden of that debt on the shoulders of struggling renters.”

Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saggart; Historic window glass conservation with funding of €15,000. And the Old Glebe, Newcastle; External joinery repair to include draught proofing with a grant of €10,000. Deputy Higgins added, “As the phased reopening of our economy continues, it is hoped it will be possible that many of the projects under the two Built Heritage Capital grant schemes can proceed without further delay. “Successful applicants will be advised that all works must be carried out in compliance with physical distancing instructions and other public health measures. “It will

GOVERNMENT REACHED JUST 26% OF ITS VACANT HOUSING TARGET TO DATE Eoin Ó Broin TD has criticised the government for failing to deliver on its vacant home’s strategy. According to information received in response to a
parliamentary question, only 1,462 homes have been delivered to date via three government schemes; Repair and Lease, Buy and Renew, and the
Housing Agency Fund. The government’s target across all three schemes was 5,600.
Responding to the figures, Deputy Ó Broin said: “The information I received in response to a parliamentary question indicates that, since the three vacant homes schemes were introduced, only 1,462 homes have been brought into use out of a target of 5,600. “Only 165 homes had been brought back into use under the Repair and Lease scheme by the end of 2019, which is dismal considering Minister Coveney set a target to deliver 3,500 homes by 2021. “550 new social homes have been delivered via Buy and Renew up to the end of 2019. Only 747 homes have been purchased out of the €70m rolling Housing Agency fund, despite 1,600 homes targeted for delivery by 2020 in Rebuilding Ireland and 1,800 homes being
offered. “This is a pathetic rate of return given the census identified 189,000 vacant homes across the country in 2016 and the Geo Directories confirmed 90,000 of this figure. “The Repair and Leasing scheme has been a failure.
Despite the 3,500-target set by Minister Coveney, three and a half years in and despite tweaks to the scheme in 2018, the government has only reached 4.7% of its target. “The Housing Agency €70m rolling fund has only acquired 747 homes as of the end of 2019. It is disappointing that despite 1,800 homes being offered and a target of 1,600 properties to be delivered by 2020, purchases have only been completed on 445 of these homes by Approved Housing Bodies. “It is clear that the government never put its full weight in terms of funding or support towards
these schemes. Greater flexibility should have been demonstrated and more support should have been given to smaller, more rural local authorities. “If Sinn Féin forms part
of the next government we would insist on an immediate, time-limited review of these schemes with a view to setting ambitious targets for the return of vacant homes back into use.”

LOCAL BUSINESSES STAY UP AND RUNNING DURING PANDEMIC PERIOD THROUGH EBAY IRELAND INITIATIVE
Almost 140 businesses across Ireland joined eBay’s Up and Running programme in May, an initiative developed to support small to medium sized (SMEs) Irish businesses struggling amid the COVID-19 restrictions, including two businesses in Tallaght and Knocklyon. The initiative was developed by the global e-commerce site to help local SMEs sell products at a time when many had to shut up shop due to the COVID-19 lockdown. The programme supports Irish businesses that are new to eBay by setting them up on the platform, removing all fees for the first three months, offering guidance and mentorship, and providing a direct line of communication to a dedicated eBay Ireland team.
For chocolate maker Clare Tait, the ecommerce opportunity has allowed her business, Chocolatey Clare, to continue operating and selling, despite many of
the cafés and stores she supplies, closing due to COVID-19 restrictions. The food producer, who supplies luxury, dairy-free and gluten-free chocolate bars to retail outlets like The Butler’s Pantry, believes that an online sale presence is paramount following COVID-19.
Speaking about the Up and Running Programme, Clare said: “I knew that Ireland was heading for a lockdown and I immediately started looking for online platforms to sell on in order to achieve as wide a reach as possible for my brand. I was delighted to find out about eBay’s Up and Running programme as it is an international marketplace and allows me to access a new array of customers who might not be looking on my own website. We’re only getting started but the potential is huge.” As phase two of easing lockdown restrictions begins across Ireland and stores and cafés
slowly begin to reopen, Clare is confident she will continue to sell on eBay.ie in the months ahead.
Another Dublin business that joined the Up and Running programme is Tallaghtbased Uncanny Collectibles. The business, which sells genuine collectors’ items and action figures from brands such as Marvel, DC and NECA, was one of the first to join the eBay programme after its usual means of selling was put in jeopardy due to COVID-19 government restrictions. Speaking about the Up and Running Programme, Kim Mooney, owner of Uncanny Collectibles said: “Joining eBay’s Up and Running Programme has been a very positive move for my business, I started my own website selling collectables in 2017 and know how difficult it can be to develop shipping rules, postage policies and everything else that comes with selling online. But the eBay team’s
help and guidance have been brilliant, they really helped make the process so easy so I could get selling on ebay.ie as quickly as possible.” Irish businesses, with or without an existing e-commerce presence, are invited to use the ebay. ie marketplace with the following benefits: Free listings on ebay.ie, no Final Value Fees (the commission paid to eBay based on the final value of sales) and free training that will cover eBay selling basics, how to get the most out of the platform, digital skills, search and listing optimisation and marketing. The training will be delivered through a series of webinars and mentoring programmes from eBay’s dedicated team in Ireland, helping ensure a smooth transition online for those with no or limited experience. With 174+ million buyers across the 190 markets in which eBay operates, the
Up & Running programme will give Irish retailers the opportunity to reach new customers, both at home and overseas, at a time when consumers are looking to online channels to fulfil many of their
shopping needs. Companies interested in the Up & Running initiative are invited to create a business account or for further information make contact by emailing ebayireland@ ebay.com.

GREEN-SCHOOLS GREEN FLAG AWARD 2020
The 2019/2020 academic year marks the 23rd year of the Green-Schools programme in Ireland. Despite the temporary closure of schools in March, the dedication of schools to submit their Green Flag application after a two-year effort to create sustainable environments in their schools was both poignant and exceptional.
were awarded for Energy, 18 were awarded for Water, twenty-four were awarded for Travel, ten were awarded for Biodiversity, 13 were awarded for Global Citizenship Litter and Waste, 13 were awarded for Global Citizenship Energy, six were awarded for the Marine Environment, and three were awarded for Global Citizenship Travel.
The Green-Schools staff who have been recently processing applications have been overwhelmed by the high standard and inspired by the positive actions taking place all over the country. A week of celebrations is taking place virtually from May 25-29th with Green-Schools Officers, Local Authorities, Sponsors, and communities commending the #GreenFlag2020 achievements made by schools nationwide.
Green-Schools Manager Cathy Baxter congratulated the awarded schools: “Well done to all the students and teachers all over the country who have worked so hard to achieve this award. Seeing the creativity and positivity of thousands of young people taking action to improve our environment is truly inspiring. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
During May, 750 schools nationwide were awarded the Green Flag for their work on the themes of Litter & Waste, Energy, Water, Travel, Biodiversity and Global Citizenship. Among these figures 22 Dublin schools were awarded the Green flag for the first time under the Litter and Waste theme, two
592 million litres of water, 4.4 million litres of heating oil and over 29 million units of electricity. Throughout the year students contributed to lowering traffic related emissions at the school gate by walking, cycling and scooting to school. To promote active travel, a total of 4000 students received cycle training and 1100 spaces were created for bike and scooter parking.

On completion of the Global Citizenship themes, schools tripled their knowledge about global issues such as food origin and FairTrade, and 79 % of schools increased their knowledge on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The installation of new vegetable gardens and bird feeders improved students’ knowledge of the importance of biodiversity, and 2799 native trees were planted by students. Schools around the country
Across Ireland there are over 4000 schools registered on the Green-Schools programme and with over 900,000 young people actively contributing to the Green-Schools programme for a more sustainable future.
The collective efforts made by schools across Ireland culminated to impressive environmental savings across waste, energy, water and transport, and positive impacts were made towards biodiversity, global citizenship, and the marine environment. In 2020 schools diverted 2,500 tonnes of waste from landfill, and saved an impressive
ARE YOU PLAYING LIFE BLINDLY? OR DO YOU HAVE A STRATEGY? By Brónagh Lyons
There are two types of people in the world, proactive people and reactive people. In University, if I had two months to write an essay, I would start it the night before and pull an all-nighter to hand it in just-on-time. Long deadlines never motivated me to take action, but knowing a 5,000-word essay is due in 24 hours? I’m suddenly very motivated! I had friends who would plan out their essays for the two months; prepare their research; sketch their notes. They would bring their deadline forward and hand their essays a week early... While they were preparing to prepare, I was that person always running around, arriving late to everything, forgetting commitments I’d made, pulling out of promises last minute. My life was an impending deadline - stressful! I realised that I am reactive and that those friends are proactive. Now don’t get me wrong, there are A LOT of benefits of being reactive. For example, we are very flexible and adaptable as we are used to acting on the spot and working with short deadlines. However, when I began putting plans in place and organising my day my life became easier. The key to being reactive is to be proactive about your reactivity. In turn, my proactive friends learned how to be more flexible and adaptable, to think on the spot and make quick decisions – they took their proactive skills into reactive situations and learned to thrive. How can you be proactive about your reactivity? Or be proactive in reactive situations?

TU DUBLIN PROJECT SECURES OVER €4M IN HORIZON 2020 FUNDING
Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) will coordinate an international research project which aims to enhance the spatial ability of young people and to help close the gender gap in STEM. The multi-agency project, Spatially Enhanced Learning Linked to STEM (SellSTEM), was awarded €4.12M in funding from the Marie Skłodowska Curie Innovative Training Network under Horizon 2020, an EU 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe’s global competitiveness.
Research has shown that those with high levels of spatial ability are much more likely to succeed in STEM subjects, enjoy doing them and select them for further education and careers compared to those with low spatial ability. The large gender gap in spatial ability in favour of males means women are over-represented in the low spatial ability group and more disadvantaged in STEM learning. Over four years SellSTEM, which is a consortium of ten European universities and eight non-academic partners, will recruit and
train 15 PhD students to develop innovative and practical approaches to improve spatial ability among young people in Europe, so they are better prepared for learning science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.
Speaking about the project, Dr Gavin Duffy, TU Dublin, said, “SellSTEM will train researchers to collect spatial ability data from children in Europe to measure it against academic performance and career choice and analyse the interaction by gender, region and socioeconomic status. Our researchers will also develop methods to foster spatial ability among children through online learning, tactile activities, maker-space workshops, project-based learning, and integrated with the STEM curriculum.” Continuing Dr Duffy said, “They will work with teachers and teacher educators to identify barriers and enablers to developing spatial ability so they can provide
sustainable classroom solutions to raise the spatial ability of children above existing levels. SellSTEM brings fresh thinking to promoting STEM education and careers, including addressing the gender gap in STEM enrolment, thereby enabling Europe to achieve its agenda for growth and jobs.” Members of the SellSTEM consortium, include Technological University Dublin, Technische Universiteit Delft, Bangor University, Norges TekniskNaturvitenskapelige Universitet – NTNU, Latvijas Universitāte, Universiteit Leiden, Paris-LodronUniversität Salzburg – PLUS, Universität Regensburg, Universität Koblenz-Landau and Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan - KTH, Microsoft Ireland Operations, Stichting VHTO, SAP Service and Support Centre, Ionad Oideachais Mhuineacháin, De Galan School Voor Training, Science Hub TU Delft, Marino Institue of Technology, Stichting Waag Society and VHTO, National Expert Organisation on Girls/Women and Science/ Technology, Netherlands.

The competition, which is traditionally held in the Royal Academy in Dublin, was held online this year with over 90 people tuning in from across the world to support the talented young people. Out of 75 entrants from across the country, Louise was one of 10 who were chosen to deliver their speech in front of a panel of well-known expert judges. This years’ judging panel

The competition is part of ActionAid’s women’s rights programme, funded by Irish Aid. The programme works to end early girl marriage and FGM, prevent genderbased violence, gain land rights for women and help children receive an education. ActionAid Ireland uses a Behaviour Change approach to this work in Ethiopia, Kenya and Nepal; the approach has helped participating women and girls, men and boys, and traditional and cultural leaders to move away from
damaging behaviours.
The aim of the Speech Writing competition is to promote engagement and increase awareness of international aid among the Irish public. This year’s competition focused on the topical issue of ‘Women’s Rights in a Changing Climate”. The students discussed how climate change will only be solved through the inclusion and empowerment of women. All finalists demonstrated a keen interest in women’s rights and an exceptional understanding of the topics however only two could be chosen to scoop the coveted first prize - a visit to ActionAid Sweden, accompanied by their teachers. There they will learn more about ActionAid’s work addressing climate change
and inequalities across the globe. “This is the 6th year of the Speech Writing Competition and we are always humbled by the
effort that goes into every entry. This year’s finalists had an excellent knowledge and understanding of the importance of women’s role in addressing climate breakdown. The
future is surely bright. Congratulations to all our finalists for getting so far. They are fantastic young people” said Siobhán McGee, Chief Executive of ActionAid Ireland.

Audrey says: “Since opening the new centre in November I have been amazed by every child that has joined my class. Some of my students came to me because they were struggling in school, it is very rewarding to see the child develop into a more capable and confident student within just a few months.
They begin to face challenges with a better attitude and their concentration improves as they progress. 17,664 at the end April. “Similarly, orthopaedic procedures have gone from 6,134 waiting in February to 8,672 by the end of April. “Priorities procedure like endoscopy, cardiology, cardiovascular, urology, and orthopaedics have all but stopped. “This is unacceptable and is simply criminal while beds and resource lie untapped and unused in these private hospitals “The clear lack of planning for these beds demonstrates an inherent weakness in the HSE; that is unable to adapt, change and react to change and opportunities when they present themselves.”

ACCELERATION OF ROADMAP POSSIBLE THANKS TO HUGE EFFORTS OF PEOPLE IN DUBLIN Travel within Dublin and opening of retail stores came into effect from last Monday. The acceleration of the Government’s Phase 2 reopening plan has been made possible thanks in no small part to the huge efforts of the people, a Fine Gael Deputy has said. Deputy Emer Higgins said: “My colleagues in Cabinet have agreed to implement all elements of Phase 2 and to bring forward the actions in the remaining phases. “Under the reconfiguration of the Roadmap, there are now just two remaining phases instead of three, with Phase 3 starting on the 29th of June, and Phase 4 on the 20th of July. “In the meantime, as we enter Phase 2, our advice is to stay local. Avoid unnecessary travel. Please
continue to work from home if possible. We are on the right path - let’s keep taking care of each other and our communities. “The acceleration of the roadmap has been made possible thanks to the high level of compliance with social distancing and hygiene measures, and it’s vital that this continues to ensure that further progress can be made. “Further work will be carried out in the coming days and weeks to determine which actions will take place in each phase. Some measures such as bans on mass gatherings may need to remain in place well into August as will public health advice around hygiene and physical distancing. Deputy Emer Higgins continued: “The following

Deputy Higgins continued: “A new Summer Education Programme for children with special educational needs and disadvantage, will also commence, as the indications are that it is now safe to do so. The Minister for Education and Skills, Joe Mc Hugh, will bring proposals in this regard to Government next week. “The focus of the programme will be on students and young people with complex needs – including those who live with significant behavioural, social, emotional and sensory difficulties. Children with Down Syndrome will be included as part of our plans for this summer. “Shopping centres can re-open on June 15th provided only shops open and measures are taken to ensure people do not congregate at benches, fountains or food courts. “It is hoped that in three weeks’ time we will be able to move to a more advanced Phase 3, which would include the reopening of domestic tourism in our country, and bring forward the opening of hotels, restaurants, bars that also operate as restaurants, hostels, caravan parks,
galleries and museums to the 29th of June. It is anticipated that places of worship will also be able to reopen from this point. “Social distancing measures will mean that capacity on public transport will remain very restricted, so people are encouraged to only use public transport for essential journeys, and wearing a face covering is recommended when doing so.” Deputy Emer Higgins concluded: “During this Emergency, the people of our area have suffered, lost loved ones and changed the way they work and live. But thanks to your efforts we are making progress.” An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: “As our country opens up and we start interacting more, personal responsibility becomes even more important than ever. We got into this fight against COVID-19 together, and we will only get out of it together. “So, let me end with words of hope, ‘In the end, it’s only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer.’ “Thanks to your hard-work, your choices, and your perseverance, that new day is approaching.”
SLOW PROGRESS ON SOUTH DUBLIN COCO MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME
Concern has been raised in relation to a planned maintenance programme in council housing estates in 2019. A programme of works totalling €10.75 million including Window and Doors replacement(€8.5 million), Painting (€750k), Safety works (€1m) and Balgaddy specific works (€500k) was agreed by councillors at the May 2019 County Council meeting. However, a question submitted by People Before Profit councillor Madeleine Johansson for the June county council meeting reveals that very little progress has been made on the rolling out of the programme. Cllr Johansson commented: “I’m very concerned that the progress on this important programme has been very slow. There is a long waiting list for council tenants who need windows and doors to replaced. Then there are estates
such as Balgaddy that needs serious ongoing maintenance such as painting and improvement works. Council tenants pay rent and have the right to live in decent conditions and the council has the obligation as the landlord to carry out any work needed.
“The reply received by the council to my question is wholly inadequate. I specifically asked the Chief Executive to outline how much has been spent on the programme so far but the reply contains no financial cost figures at all. Following the council meeting the Housing manager clarified some issues to me in relation to the delay. Contractors have been appointed to some of the Balgaddy works however they were delayed due to Brexit and Covid-19. ”

MOTORING LIFE
WITH
All-New Renault Clio – The Best, Bettered By Breda Corrigan
Those of us who are old enough to remember the TV advert for the original Renault Clio in the early 1990’s will fondly remember the iconic French girl ‘Nicole’ and her father, who was affectionately known as ‘Papa’. The advert was one of the most popular TV ads at the time, and it introduced the car-buying public to the striking replacement for the ageing – but ultra-popular – Renault 5. The Clio has enjoyed huge sales success ever since then, being consistently one of Europe’s top-selling cars since its launch, and it is largely credited with restoring Renault’s reputation, and stature, after a difficult second half of the 1980s. Seductive, Connected;
Smart
&
With the all-new Clio, Renault have brought to the market a car of three parts, so to speak. Firsly, the new 5th generation Clio is a seductive small car that you can customise to your own individual taste. Secondly, the car boasts a smart cockpit which is more intuitative than ever before, while last but not least, the new Clio is a connected car that is easy to drive. The Clio distinguishes itself from rivals by being one of the most technologically advanced models in its class. This move is part of a bid by the French car manufacturer to keep its supermini at the forefront of the sector, especially in the face of increasing competition from compact SUVs. Evolutionary Design; The exterior styling of the new Renault Clio is evolutionary, keeping elements such as rear door handles hidden in the door frames, with the overall look in line with the current Reanult Mégane. The interior, though, is where the bigger changes take place. Renault design boss Laurens van den
Acker stated that the firm “dramatically needed to improve perceived quality”, and reckons 70% of the time he spent with the new Clio was on its interior. Cabin materials in the new Clio are softer and more tactile, while build quality is exceptional. The new Clio is based on an allnew platform, which has enabled the designers to manipulate the packaging so that the car’s dimensions are actually smaller than the fourth-generation car’s, yet there is more space inside. Impressive Equipment;
Standard
Trim levels in the all-new Clio consist of Expression, Dynamique, Iconic, and RS Line, with even the entrylevel Expression model coming with such standard features as Renault Pure Vision LED headlights, LED indicators, LED daytime running lights, bodycoloured door handles and mirrors, driver seat height adjustment, COMFORT front seats with reinforced side supports, 6 airbags, Hill Start Assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, cruise control with speed limiter, airconditioning, Bluetooth, 4.2” TFT driver information display, and Renault Automatic Emergency Assist (112). Engine & Options;
Transmission
Currently, there are petrol and diesel engines available in the new Clio, with a Clio E-Tech Hybrid model set to join the range soon. Petrol engines are available with 75, 100 or 130bhp – depending on the model and gearbox chosen, while the only diesel engine available is an 85bhp (Blue dCi) unit, which comes with a sixspeed manual gearbox as
standard. The 75bhp petrol engine (badged SCe) comes with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 100bhp version (badged TCe) is available with either 5-speed manual, or Auto CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) options. The only transmission available with the 130bhp engine is an Auto EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch). Test Car;
My test car was a new Clio RS Line TCe (100), and was finished in striking Iron Blue metallic paint. Being the range-topping model in the Clio range, a comprehensive array of equipment comes as standard. Key features include a special RS Line front bumper with an Formula 1-style blade painted in Gun Metal Grey, with a bee-hive lower grille, 17” RS Line diamondcut alloy wheels, oval chrome exhaust finisher, Gun Metal Grey rear spoiler and lower door protectors, fornt LED foglights, auto lights and low beam, rear view camera, front parking sensors, Multi-Sense with ambient lighting, and an Easylink 9.3” infotainment screen with navigation and Smartphone replication, while exclusive RS Line chrome badges on the front wings and boot lid add visual impact. On The Road; On the road, the new Clio feels like a larger, m o r e mature car thanks to its soft ride and
impressive refinement. Producing 99bhp and 160Nm of torque, the 1.0-litre TCe engine is quiet and entertaining in equal measure, with the car capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 11.2-seconds. The Clio’s steering is well weighted, while the car’s involving 5-speed gearbox is precise, and intuitive to use. On a combined driving cycle, I managed to achieve fuel consumption of 6.2l/100km (46MPG), while annual road tax is just €180. The new Clio boasts excellent practicality too, with an impressive 391-litres of boot space available when
the 60:40 split-folding rear seat backs are in place. This is a figure that would shame many cars from the class above, but this spaciousness does not come at the expense of interior comfort, as the access to the rear seats is even easier than before, while overall head, leg and elbow room throughout the cabin is good. Verdict & Pricing; Competitors to the new Renault
Clio inlcude the Ford Fiesta, VW Polo, SEAT Ibiza, and the newly-launched Opel Corsa and Peugeot 208. However, with the new Clio offering so much in terms of standard equipment, practicality, refinement, affordable running costs, and more, it can certainly hold its head high amongst such talented rivals. With prices starting at just €17,195 (ex-works), the new Clio offers terrific value too. All Renault passenger cars come with a 5-Year/200,000km warranty for total peace-of-mind motoring.

NEW MERCEDES-BENZ GLB ARRIVES WITH 7-SEAT OPTION
With their second SUV launch in as many months, Mercedes-Benz has introduced further choice to their compact SUV model offering with the arrival here of their much heralded new GLB. Ranked as the first Mercedes-Benz in its class to offer a 7-seat option, models with this feature come with a third row of seats concealed beneath the luggage floor that can be raised to expand capacity to a seven seat layout as required. Fully retractable, the two extra seats are said by Mercedes-Benz to provide ‘comfortable seating for passengers up to a height of 1.68m’. Within this layout, second row seats also split 40.20.40. Raising their SUV range to what their sales manager Ciaran Allen calls ‘an entirely new level of desirability’, the new GLB joins other SUV derivatives within a family of Mercedes-Benz compact cars of which some seven million have been delivered since
A-Class was first introduced over two decades ago. Aside from its passenger capacity, the new GLB is said by Ciaran Allen to ‘redefine the definition of a compact car’ by delivering what he terms ‘exceptional levels of spaciousness’ with plenty of room in all dimensions’. At 2,829mm, it has the longest wheelbase of Mercedes-Benz’s current compact generation. Front headroom is 1,069mm with rear legroom in the five-seat version said to be ‘especially comfortable’ at 967mm. Powerful in its proportions and imposing in its appearance, it has a distinctive exterior true to the off-road focus of its design. This is evident in its upright stature, bold frontal appearance, striking headlamps, railed roofline, short front and back overhangs, and in its elegant yet decisive rear end. Optional is 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a special off-road light
which helps the driver to detect obstacles at low speeds. Available in two design and equipment lines – Progressive and AMG – its numerous options include a ‘night package’ in which black highgloss body highlights give it a distinctive look. Coming later will be a special order Edition 1 model with exclusive boldly coloured bodywork. Inside, it has a high-quality attractiveness in which its offroad design influences are echoed in its instrumentation and controls elements, steering column, spirallook dashboard, doors and centre console highlights. Fitted with the acclaimed MBUX user experience and ‘Hey Mercedes’ command system, its other interior elements include two 7-inch instrument cluster and media displays with touch screen facility, a sports steering wheel with touch control. Aside from a wide range of standard items, an extensive
menu of optional choices includes comfort elements such as feelgood lighting, musical moods and seat massages features. Also included in the mix of optional driver assistance systems is a camera and radar system that can scan the road up to 500 metres ahead and, in semi-automated mode, can adjust speed when coming to bends, junctions or roundabouts. To enhance the experience when driving off-road and on rough terrain, optional lighting and adaptive main beam features can be introduced. Powering the new GLB are updated 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, all characterised by increased power, improved efficiency and reduced emissions. Petrol models – all with 7G/8G automatic transmission – are: GLB 200 (1332cc/Nm 250 torque/), GLB 250 (1991cc/Nm 350) and GLB35 4MATIC AMG (1991cc/Nm
400). Diesel models – all 1950cc with 8G automatic transmission – are: GLB 180d (Nm 280 torque), GLB 200d and GLB 200d 4MATIC (both Nm 320) and GLB 220d 4MATIC (Nm 400), each certified to Euro 6d and geared to meet Real Driving Emissions (RDE) Stage 2 requirements. Equipped with comfort suspension with steel springs as standard, an adaptive damping system is optionally available. The new GLB arrives against a backdrop whereby every third vehicle produced by MercedesBenz is an SUV and every fourth a compact car. Launched with what Ciaran Allen calls ‘the most competitive package possible tagging affordable prices to highlevel specifications’, the focus in Ireland will fall on the following models initially – the GLB Progressive 180 Automatic from €42,350 and the GLB Progressive 180d Automatic from €43,190.

each of our clients needs. From timber gates to steel gates we have such a wide selection that it really needs to be seen.
Front gates are the first thing people see when they come to your home. Well chosen gates give the impression that the house is well cared for and the owner takes great pride in their home. We can install any size gates from small side entrance gates to large entrance gates that enhance the overall look to your home. Not only have gates an aesthetic role to play. Another major role of gates in your home business is also security. Gates are of paramount importance when it comes to the security of your home. A side entrance gate can prevent burglars from accessing the rear of your home. This will prevent them from entering your
home through the rear of the house which the is primary route of home burglaries. Large secure front gates also play a massive part in increasing the overall security of your home or business. Front gates can make the difference between your home and vehicle being
stolen or not. Secure, strong front gates can be enough of a deterrent for a potential burglar for them to move on past your home. For a free consultation contact Colour Trend Sheds on www.colourtrendsheds. ie or phone Colm on 014670131.
