MORE CCTV NEEDS TO BE USED TO FIGHT LITTER PROBLEM Local Councillors Shirley O’Hara and Baby Pereppadan received huge support for their joint motion calling for the use of CCTV cameras to tackle littering and illegal dumping. “Litter is becoming a bigger and bigger issue locally. We are seeing more litter in our public spaces like our parks and, unfortunately, an increase in illegal dumping and flytipping in certain areas including rural roads
where people feel they can get away with it easier. Utilising CCTV, or indeed drones, would be a huge help when it comes to deterring littering as well as identifying the culprits,” explained Cllr. Shirley O’Hara who represents Rathcoole, Saggart, Newcastle and Clondalkin on the Council.
Tallaght Councillor, Baby Pereppadan, agreed saying that, “litter is an ongoing issue in Tallaght and
we really need to look at innovative ways of tackling it. That’s why Cllr. O’Hara and I have called on Minister Eamonn Ryan to change the law around tackling litter to allow Council’s like South Dublin, use CCTV to deter and prosecute people who are littering.”
In response to their motion the Council’s Director of Environment said that The Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) is
currently auditing Local Authorities including South Dublin County Council in respect of their use of CCTV, including uses related to Law Enforcement. The DPC issued a Draft Inquiry Report to the Council setting out issues and provisional views based on their inquiries, including several related to Litter and Waste Enforcement matters. SDCC has issued a comprehensive response to the matters raised and awaits the final report.
Both Councillors Shirley O’Hara and Baby Pereppadan welcomed the report from the Council and agreed that it was great to hear that this would mean a further strengthening of the legal basis. Legislation is due before the Houses of the Oireachtas in the Autumn. In the meantime, on foot of the motion, a letter has issued to Minister Eamonn Ryan, urging for this legislation to be enacted as soon as possible.

LIA KNOW IT MAKES FINANCIAL SENSE TO CONSIDER THE SHOPFRONT IMPROVEMENT GRANT SCHEME LIA Life Insurance Association Ireland - a professional educational and development association for the financial services industry, have been awarded €1,000 in recognition of the work undertaken to transform the shopfront design of its business premises. LIA of Kimmage Road West, Dublin 12 received €1,000 from South Dublin County Council under the Council’s annual Shopfront Improvement Grant Scheme. The award of Best Designed Shopfront was in addition to a grant received to part fund the installation
of an improved shopfront design. ‘I would like to congratulate Terry McGrath on the fabulous improvement to the new shopfront at LIA’ said Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr Peter Kavanagh “The Shopfront Grant Scheme provides an opportunity for local businesses and retailers to preserve and enhance our villages. Kimmage Road West is at the edge of South Dublin County and the improvement works on this shopfront creates a good impression as one enters our county. Winning the Best Designed Shopfront award

as well as receiving the grant towards the improvement works shows that it makes sense for local businesses to apply for the Shopfront Improvement Grant Scheme. A building’s facade can make a big impact on our streetscape and how a shopfront looks matters to both the business owner and the local community. This initiative is a further example of the strong supports we are making available to retailers and businesses in our County. I would encourage local businesses to investigate the scheme and see how it can contribute to their trade.” The annual Shopfront Improvement Grant Scheme provides grants for something as simple as painting, to replacing an entire shopfront. Grants are available for a maximum of 50% of overall costs. Furthermore, a prize of €1,000 is awarded for the Best Designed Shopfront under the scheme. This is the 8th year of the scheme
in South Dublin County and, despite the current economic climate due to COVID-19, the Council has received an impressive number of queries this year. “We are delighted to win this award” said Terry McGrath of LIA who projectmanaged the upgrade. “We have been serving the Irish financial services industry from our location in Kimmage Road West since 1993. Our business is on a very busy roadway, and
over the years the front of our office had started to show its age so we thought it time to do something about it. We worked with shopfitters Crossans & Sons Joinery and decided to go with a more traditional look in keeping with the original building. We are very happy with the transformation and are grateful to the council for their support with this grant. It is a great scheme for small businesses and I would encourage other local businesses to consider
applying for it.” Under the scheme, the works at LIA included restoration of the timber shopfront, repainting, and new signage. Details of the scheme including Terms and Conditions and online form for 2021 are available on the Council’s website at www.sdcc.ie/en/services/ business. NEW LIFFEY VALLEY HEARING HEALTHCARE CLINIC The ‘hear and now’ has arrived in Clondalkin at the recently opened stateof-the-art new Hidden Hearing audiology clinic at Liffey Valley Shopping Centre. Appointments can be made on 01 620 1992 for free hearing tests with audiologist, Joseph Hobson, in the handy new clinic.
Located alongside Tesco Extra, Hidden Hearing Liffey Valley also provides hearing aid advice and sample hearing aids to try. Recent improvements to the Government’s Treatment Benefit Scheme mean two free hearing aids are now available with PRSI benefits, for
employed, self-employed, or retired people. Free aftercare services include a lifetime of free batteries and a 90-day money back guarantee. Tesco Clubcard members can also get 10% off at the new Liffey Valley Hidden Hearing outlet, until September, and specialist ear wax removal is available
at a discounted price of €50 for the summer.
Impacted wax is a common cause of hearing loss that is frustrating but easily fixed, Joseph Hobson says, cautioning against putting anything in ears. “Apart from damaging the sensitive inner ear, using cotton buds
or hairgrips just makes the wax more compacted. In fact, ear wax congestion is now common in people who regularly use earbuds for their music or phones”. The advice is to soften the wax with olive-oil based eardrops, and make an appointment with Hidden Hearing or your GP, the audiologist says. Hidden Hearing is Ireland’s longest established exclusive hearing care experts, with the latest digital technology to promptly diagnose and treat hearing problems. Safety protocols are in place at all clinics for the utmost patient care, so people can attend the new Liffey Valley outlet in safety and confidence.
Around 15% of the Irish population suffer some degree of hearing loss, with men likely to lose their hearing earlier than women. 35% of people aged over 64 have a significant hearing loss and, in the over 75s, 50% will have agerelated hearing loss. Recent research shows that many Irish people are failing to acknowledge and treat hearing loss, which could have other serious health implications. Shocking findings include the fact that 35% with hearing loss here
do not have treatment at all, and 22% wait five years or more before seeking help. Ignoring hearing loss has implications for our health and safety, and that of others, according to audiologist Joseph Hobson of Hidden Hearing. Difficulty hearing is a simple fact of aging, like worsening eyesight, the audiology expert says, explaining that modern hearing aids instantly fix the problem and are barely noticeable by anyone other than the wearer. “Not being able to hear clearly can put people in dangerous situations. They may not hear an oncoming car or work equipment starting up, or they may miss a warning call”, he says. Medical research shows that not remedying hearing loss also has knock-on effects like isolation and depression, and is associated with heart problems, diabetes and dementia. “It is difficult to be part of a conversation, especially in a group, if your hearing is impaired. Social interaction, enjoying the TV or radio, and staying in touch is hugely important for good mental health and relies on being able to hear properly, Joseph Hobson of Hidden Hearing says.
Hidden Hearing offers free tests to everyone and encourages anyone worried about their hearing to make an appointment on www.hiddenhearing.ie or call 01 620 1992.

HELLFIRE TOURISM PROJECT GIVEN GO AHEAD BY HIGH COURT The High Court has ruled against objections to the controversial Dublin Mountain Visitors Centre at the Hellfire heritage site. There has been widespread opposition to the scale of the project both by local residents and environmental campaigners. One of the issues, in relation to the protection of birds, raised by the campaigning group is being referred by the High Court to the European Court of Justice. Gino Kenny TD (People Before Profit) and Cllr Madeleine Johansson both opposed the proposal and Gino made a presentation at the An Bord Pleanala oral hearing in 2019.
Court’s ruling on this unnecessary visitors centre. I’m concerned about the impact the project will have on biodiversity in the area, and I think that the scale of this is out of proportion. I welcome that some issues are being referred to the European Court of Justice.” “The purpose of the development seems to be to bring in foreign tourists, without any regard for local residents and those living in the Dublin region who use the area for recreational purposes. In these uncertain times we need to spend our resources on the community, not on visitor centres for foreign tourists.”
Gino Kenny TD commented: “I’m very disappointed to see the High
Cllr Madeleine Johansson said: “I’m very concerned that a private operator
will be brought in to manage the facility. Once again we see our public spaces being privatised. Our natural environment and heritage sites should not be open for profiteering by private companies. I will continue to argue within South Dublin County Council that this facility be managed by a public body, not a private company. “Some works are required in the area to safeguard the heritage site and improve facilities. The money that is to be spent on the centre could instead be used to upgrade the car park and provide necessary facilities like toilets which do not impact on the natural environment.”
‘WOMEN IN POLITICS’ RESOURCE LAUNCHED A new ‘Women in Politics’ section has been launched on South Dublin County Council’s website to support women in getting involved in local government. This is just one part of efforts being made by South Dublin County Council to support women currently serving and to provide resources for women considering going for the local election in 2024. A ‘Women in Politics’ campaign is being launched across the Council’s social media channels in 2021 whilst research into gender representation in the 2019 local elections is also being carried out. Under-representation of women occurs across many professions and is not just a local or national issue in political life. According to the UN, women are under-represented in local government globally with only 36% of local elected members being female. In Ireland, the national figure is 23% so the country is well below the global average. South Dublin County
Council itself is above the national and global average with approximately 39% of current elected members being women. The ‘Women in Politics’ launch is the latest genderbased initiative from South Dublin County Council. In 2019, the Council became the first local authority in the state to provide free sanitary products in public toilets at Council offices in Tallaght and Clondalkin. In 2020, a Safety and Inclusivity Study for Public Spaces in Clondalkin research piece was completed that looked at gender-based violence in public spaces and made recommendations on improvements. South Dublin County Council is committed to encouraging women from all backgrounds to get involved in local politics and will continue to add information, resources, studies etc to help women run for election. These resources will continuously be added as they build towards the local elections in 2024.

Mark Ward T.D. has called for immediate Government funding to provide a national free phone for men who are experiencing domestic abuse and coercion. Teachta Ward raised this issue on the floor of the Dail during recent statements on Action to tackle sexual, domestic and gender-based violence. Ward said “Domestic abuse is sadly all too common in our society and not enough is being done to prevent abuse and support victims. “While domestic violence is more commonly perpetrated by male abusers, it can also be committed by women. “Abuse committed by female abusers is a serious issue which must be taken as seriously as abuse committed by men. The local T.D. continued “Indeed, survivors of female abusers can often face particular stigma to the violence not fitting into society’s understanding of abuse. “Information I received from Men’s Aid ,who are a national charity that supports men
and their families experiencing Domestic Violence and coercive control tells me that there is no national free phone for men. “They also informed me that at least 1 in 7 men in Ireland will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. “1 in 16 experience ‘severe’ domestic violence. “They are currently receiving on average 27 calls a day and received 1641 calls in the first quarter of the year. Ward concluded “Less than 1% of the budget for domestic abuse goes to supports for male survivors and it “I have contacted Minister O Gorman to ask him that funding is provided for a free phone. We have a duty as a society to ensure proper support is in place for all survivors. “No survivors of domestic violence should be allowed to fall through the cracks, simply because their experience falls outside the traditional stereotypes of how abuse occurs. “Every victim deserves to be believed and supported.

led community projects in Tallaght. The Síol Foundation will also provide mentoring and financial advice to the individuals and organisations who avail of the fund. Síol are stimulating the Tallaght community to come together and co-create ideas for funding. Youth services, schools and clubs across Tallaght are encouraged to come together and develop inclusive, creative and imaginative ideas for funding. Ahead of the fund’s launch, Síol’s Director of Operations Andrea Deering said “We want the people of Tallaght to tell us what they see for the future of their community and support them to achieve it. Having an application process that is focused on their ideas of change told in video format gives anyone who ever said ‘If I had the money I would . . . ‘ an opportunity to do it. We are excited to hear the innovative ideas that will enhance the community and may even change our world.” Senator Lynn Ruane
has championed the fund, speaking ahead of the fund’s launch she called for all local services to get involved and to encourage and facilitate the ideas with the community members young and old who use their services. The fund looks to be as accessible as possible with the initial application
process for funding taking place via short video submission. A community information evening will take place via Zoom on the 29th of July. The aim of the meeting is to inform those who wish to avail of funding how to do so in a relaxed conversational setting. The fund encourages those
who have never applied for funding before to attend and learn about developing initiatives. To register for the information event, which is to be held on July 29th via email at tallaghtfund@ siolfoundation.com or register at the following link tallaghtfundinfosiolfoundation.eventbrite. ie

€105 MILLION FUNDING TO REOPEN ON-SITE THIRD LEVEL LEARNING WILL BENEFIT STUDENTS A funding package of €105 million to aid the reopening of on-site learning for third level institutions will ensure that students across Dublin can get back to lecture halls come September, Emer Higgins TD has said. Deputy Higgins said, “The past year has been exceptionally difficult for college students, in particular those who started last September and after a full year of remote learning, still haven’t set foot in a lecture hall or library. “The funding secured by Minister Harris reiterates the Government’s commitment to ensuring a return to onsite campus learning in the new academic year. While remote learning has bridged the gap during the pandemic, it is not a long-term replacement for classroom learning and we need to see students

return back to third-level campuses across Dublin. “Included in the €105 million package is funding of €21 million specifically ring-fenced for additional student supports.
This covers an extra €3 million for student mental health services, something that will be more important than ever as we deal with the aftermath of Covid-19 and lockdowns, an extra €10 million for the Student Assistance Fund which provides financial supports to students experiencing financial difficulties while in college, as well as €8 million for the Mitigating Educational Disadvantage Fund which supports and engages disadvantaged learners. “Third level education is essential, and we need to see that reflected in the return to in-person learning at the start of the new academic year. This is something that Minister Harris has prioritised for months, and I know that he is continuing to work with Dublin’s colleges and institutions who are currently engaging in detailed planning for their own buildings and campuses. “Attending college is not only a defining
experience for young people from an educational point of view, but also from a social perspective. While remote learning ensured that students continued to receive their education, so many people missed out on making friends, getting involved in clubs and societies and living away
from home. This is what we need to see resume again. “I look forward to seeing students across Dublin return to their lecture halls and libraries, meet up with their friends and get back to enjoying the normal college experience again as soon as possible,” concluded Deputy Emer Higgins.

CALL FOR LIBRARY AND TEENSPACE FOR PALMERSTOWN The Workers’ Party is currently in the process of submitting an observation on South Dublin County Council’s Draft County Development Plan 2022-28. The plan essentially sets the agenda for what work the
council will carry out in the future.
David Gardiner, Workers’ Party representative for Palmerstown-Fonthill, said: “There are parts of the plan that we have been actively campaigning on and are
glad to see included, such as the inclusion of the Silver Bridge, while there are other important things, such as building a full-time library for Palmerstown, that have been left out.” “Some of the key things that we’re supporting
include the Silver Bridge being rebuilt, an underpass being built in Palmerstown to connect the village with the rest of the area, as well as improvements and developments to Glenaulin Park/The Gaels.” “However,
we would also like to see the inclusion of a full-time library for Palmerstown, a skatepark and teenspace in Waterstown Park, as well as the ban on heavy goods vehicles on the Kennelsfort Rd weighing over 7.5t to
be reduced to 3.5t and regularly enforced.” “If you agree with us, let the council know by submitting an observation of your own online at https:// consult.sdublincoco.ie/en/ consultation/.”
OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE PLAYSPACE AT CORKAGH PARK Recently the Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Councillor Peter Kavanagh officially opened the Playspace at Corkagh Park. Speaking at the event Mayor Cllr Peter Kavanagh said; “Play is recognised as a vital activity for healthy child development. Children also need time in nature and the outdoors for their physical and mental wellbeing. Whether it is splashing in the water, running through the woodlands or sliding from the highest tower children need play experiences as part of a healthy active childhood”. Natural play has benefits for children in terms of increasing mental and physical well-being, developing imagination, and allowing children to assess risk and develop their coping abilities. The Mayor paid tribute to the local community for their support of the popular Park and Playspace at Corkagh Park and the work of the Council staff in managing the project and maintaining the playspace.

YOUNG PEOPLE SUFFER AS 11,220 NOW WAIT FOR DRIVING TESTS IN TALLAGHT
TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has criticised Minister Eamon Ryan for
the chaos his lack of action has caused for those trying to learn to drive. Figures
released to Teachta Crowe show 11,220 people are now waiting for a driving test in
LOCAL VETS IN LUCAN BUSY DURING LOCKDOWN
Local T.D. Emer Higgins popped in to MyVet.ie in Lucan village to thank CEO Liam Moriarty, Operations Manager Bernie Courtney and all the staff (including staff pet Major!) for all the long hours they put in taking care of pets in the Lucan area during lockdown. The state of the art facility recently installed a top of the range CT Scanner to help provide world-class diagnosis and treatment for pets.
the Tallaght test centre, while a further 6,113 people are on the theory test waiting list across South Dublin.
Teachta Crowe said; “Last year, I warned Minister Ryan his lack of preparation and planning for driving tests was going to cause chaos during 2021. “Unfortunately, this has now transpired, with what must be a record of 225,000 people currently waiting on a driving test or theory test. “11,220 people are now waiting for a driving test in the Tallaght test centre, while a further 6,113 people are on the theory test waiting list across South Dublin. “This time last year, we called for additional testers to be hired to help address the growing backlog, but it took months for the Minister to grant approval for the 80 extra testers the RSA themselves requested. Tallaght has the highest waiting list in the state and only got a miserly 3 additional testers. “In November, Sinn Féin asked the Minister to put the theory test online, but it took until June of this year to bring in a restricted pilot scheme. “Universities were able to immediately switch
to online exams during the pandemic, but no action was taken by Minister Ryan on this front. “It’s simply not good enough. These issues were foreseeable, but a lack of action and initiative from the Minister has allowed waiting lists escalate to a point never seen before. “The Minister seems to have been asleep at the wheel for most of the past year. “He showed no interest in what was clearly, and the latest figures back this up, an enormous problem. “It
is predominantly young people affected by these delays, which is having a massive impact on their lives. “The delays are impacting on their employment opportunities and will become an additional problem for many as they return to college in September. “We need to increase testing and theory testing capacity immediately. This should include the fast track recruitment of staff, longer opening hours, and the establishment of pop-up centres where necessary.”

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR CHILD TALKS 2021
A student from Tallaght has appeared on RTÉ 2FM to encourage children and young people to take part in Child Talks 2021. Katherine Amusan (16)
has encouraged children and young people to take part in Child Talks 2021. Now in its fourth year, the Ombudsman for Children’s Office is proud to present
Child Talks 2021; an annual event where children and young people up to age 18 are given a platform to talk about the issues that matter most to them.
WOMEN’S AID WINS EUROPEAN CITIZEN’S PRIZE MEP Frances Fitzgerald and her Fine Gael colleagues in the European Parliament have warmly congratulated Women’s Aid on winning the European Citizen’s Prize 2021, following a nomination by the MEPs for the charity’s “Too Into You” campaign.
“It is most appropriate that Women’s Aid are this year’s recipient of the European Citizen’s Prize given the shocking rise in domestic violence in Ireland and across Europe during the Covid-19 pandemic. Women’s Aid are most deserving of this award and our Fine Gael delegation was proud to nominate them in recognition of their frontline support and vital work. This award increases awareness at EU level of initiatives to address domestic violence in Ireland, 1 in 6 young women have suffered coercive control in Ireland and we are proud to be a leader within the EU in recognising and addressing this crime.” said Frances Fitzgerald, co-ordinator of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality in
the European Parliament.
The #TooIntoYou campaign was a National Public Information and Awareness Campaign on intimate relationship abuse among young people aged 18-25 run by Women’s Aid to reach the one in five young women who need support due to the heightened risk of intimate relationship abuse, including online abuse, during the Covid-19 pandemic. The European Citizens’ Prize is given in recognition of exceptional achievements in promoting EU values or cross-border cooperation, and will be presented to Women’s Aid at a public ceremony in the European Parliament’s Liaison Office in Dublin. The European Parliament will host a second ceremony in Brussels in November for all laureates from across the EU. This will be in conjunction with the 2020 ceremony, which was delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions.
This year’s theme is ‘My Hopes for the Future.’ Katherine took part in Child Talks 2020 and has encouraged children and young people to take part and to tell their story: “My story last year was about my hair and coming to terms with my identity. My culture is something to be proud of and I spoke last year about how I don’t need to separate my African culture from being born and raised in Ireland. Participating in Child Talks and getting to tell my story was a very liberating experience and it really grew my confidence. “I would tell anyone thinking of applying to go for it. You don’t need to have a fully fleshed out story – it can just be a thought or a spark – anything you are passionate about. You get so much help along the way. It is an amazing opportunity to get a platform you would not normally get.” Speaking on the importance of elevating children’s voices, Dr. Niall Muldoon said: “The past 18 months has highlighted
the importance of hearing children’s voices and their concerns. Child Talks gives us a real insight into the problems and issues children are facing and helps us to get a better understanding of their world. At a time where children’s voices have often been forgotten, Child Talks gives young people a unique platform to share their story, vision, and hopes for the future. “We want to hear from children from all over the country and from all backgrounds. We also want to hear from children with disabilities or those
who may need additional supports. There is no need to worry if you have never spoken in public, we will help you and work with you. The OCO is inviting children from all over Ireland to apply to take part in this year’s event. Taking place on November 19th to mark World Children’s Day, it will be a hybrid online-physical event. To take part or find out more email communications@ oco.ie, send a voicenote to 0871029039 or visit www. oco.ie. Applications close at 5pm the 11th of August.

STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF CROÍ RÓ NAOFA GAA CUB
The executive Committee of Croí Ró Naofa GAA club met last week to discuss the approval of the redevelopment plan of Killinarden Park. At the July meeting of South Dublin County Council, councillors approved the redevelopment of Killinarden Park. Whilst the club welcomes the redevelopment of Killinarden Park and the €2 million that has been allocated to redeveloped the park, the clubs executive Committee has some serious concerns with the redevelopment plan. Croí Ró Naofa GAA club Executive Committee have stated “Our executive members have been to the forefront of the redevelopment plan since day one. We have asked SDCC since the start for a
fenced in enclosed pitch. They have not delivered. As stated in a local newspaper on the 15th July, SDCC Director Ms Walsh said that ‘the council will continue to meet with Croí Ró Naofa members’. The council have not met with us in months. Politicians have not delivered. Several of our local representatives, have met us on many occasions. They said they would back our submission of a fenced in enclosed pitch, and they failed to do so.
We would like to thank Cllr. Richardson, Cllr Bailey and the Fine Gael group for supporting us. We feel that the current plan to elevate our pitch and put in a natural boundary will not work. Croí Ró Naofa GAA club have not been listened too. Currently we do not have a safe environment
for the children and adults of the Killinarden parish to play Gaelic Games. The new redevelopment plan will not provide us with a safe environment. Every Saturday morning we need to have a Garda presence at our club academy.
We have been the only tenants in the park for a number of years. The councils current redevelopment plan will hinder the clubs 10 year development plan. Since 2018, we have endured 84 burnt out cars, daily excursions of scramblers and quads, broken glass around our goalposts and drug paraphernalia. No other GAA club on the island has had to deal with the problems we have had to deal with since 2018. We have played very few games at home in the last three years, in some cases the
club has had to hire buses to bring juvenile teams to play matches away at great cost to our club. We have lost juvenile teams and mentors, to this anti-social behaviour and intimidation towards them.
The club has been part of the Killinarden community over the last twenty one years, bringing numerous children through the club. It was discussed last night
the club may disband after twenty one years of serving our community as we don’t have a safe environment for children and adults to take part in Gaelic Games. At the end of the day Croí Ró Naofa want the park to be the hub of the community. We want the community to use the park. But we feel that the only way we can provide a safe environment for the children and adults
of Killinarden to play Gaelic Games is a fenced in enclosed pitch. We will be seeking an urgent meeting with South Dublin County Council, Minister of Sport Catherine Martin T. D. and Minister of State of Sport Jack Chambers T. D. and all local politicians to discuss the issue and the future of Croí Ró Naofa GAA club.” concluded the Croí Ró Naofa GAA club Executive Committee.

BASKETBALL IRELAND ANNOUNCE DEPARTURE OF CEO BERNARD O’BYRNE Bernard O’Byrne is stepping down from his role as CEO and Secretary General of Basketball Ireland with immediate effect. The joint decision has been made by Mr. O’Byrne and the Basketball Ireland Board, to help the organisation move forward following a recent social media post by Mr. O’Byrne from a personal account. Basketball Ireland chairman, Paul McDevitt, said: “I am very disappointed that Bernard is retiring under these circumstances. We know that the basketball community and beyond has felt particularly let down over the last few days and we will continue to listen to and address any concerns that are raised. Basketball Ireland takes a zero tolerance stance on any form of discrimination, and diversity and inclusion are key pillars in our sport. “Bernard’s comment on social media was unacceptable. It has subsequently cast him in an unfavourable light, which is very unfortunate as over the last decade he has been a driving force within the basketball community in Ireland in addressing bullying and negative attitudes regarding gender, sexuality and race. His brief lapse in judgement does not reflect the person I know, nor Basketball Ireland as an organisation.” Mr. O’Byrne stated: “While I am hugely disappointed that this is how my decade with Basketball Ireland has ended, I understand that stepping down
is in the best interests of the sport. I am deeply apologetic over the hurt caused by my remark and I am fully cognisant of the struggles with discrimination that many people are having to deal with in day-today life. My comment was an off-the-cuff, extremely ill-judged attempt at humour based on wordplay only, that was never intended to be racially insensitive or make light of organisations which have done so much to help raise awareness of inclusion and discrimination.” Mr. O’Byrne joined Basketball Ireland in 2011. During his tenure he helped clear the organisation’s legacy debt of €1.2m. In the last five years playing membership has increased by 66% to over 30,000 in 227 clubs, while more than 800 schools now participate in the sport. In 2019 he became the first Basketball Ireland representative to be elected to the FIBA Europe Board, in recognition of his stature in European basketball. The Basketball Ireland Board thanked Mr. O’Byrne for his significant contribution to the organisation and administration of Irish basketball throughout the country and internationally. Mr. O’Byrne added, “I wish the Basketball Ireland community the very best for the future and hope they continue the impressive work and achievements that I have had the honour to assist with during the last 10 years.”
Westmanstown RFC in conjunction with Canterbury Ireland and Irish Rugby will host an 8 week programme for girls aged 11-17 to learn rugby and have fun. It will start on the 29th of July at 7pm.

MOTORING LIFE
MAZDA MX-30 – ALL NEW, ALL ELECTRIC
WITH
By Breda Corrigan Described by Mazda as being the EV (Electric Vehicle) for people “who don’t want to sacrifice driving pleasure” when choosing an electric car, the all-new Mazda MX-30 certainly has carried this philosophy through to production. The MX-30 is Mazda’s first allelectric production vehicle, and in keeping with current market trends, is predictably a Crossover. It’s been conceived and created with Mazda’s well-renowned focus on distinctive styling, innovative technology, driver focused dynamics and class-leading interior quality. Aerodynamically Efficient; The striking MX-30 is based on the handsome Mazda CX-30 Compact SUV and magnificent Mazda3 family car, but it is lower and sleeker to improve aerodynamic efficiency. A unique design feature of the MX-30 is the inclusion of ‘freestyle doors’ – essentially rear doors which open in an opposite fashion to traditional rear doors – a feature which graced the wonderful rotary-engined Mazda RX-8 coupé from 2003-2012. The front doors open to an angle of 82-degrees, while the rear doors open backwards to an angle of 80-degrees, thereby allowing easy access to the rear of the car. The ‘freestyle doors’ made sense on the RX-8 coupé and they make even more sense on the tall, frontwheel drive crossover body of the MX-30. Inviting Interior Space; The impressive interior of the new Mazda MX-30 is finished with the highest levels of comfort in mind. By using a range of exquisitely crafted, eco-friendly materials, the interior is an inviting space,
that invigorates and stimulates the driver each time they get behind the wheel. Mazda developed materials such as recycled PET with natural textures for the door trims. Real leather is mostly replaced with a vegan alternative, while for the centre console Mazda has used environmentally-sourced cork. The result is an interior which makes occupants feel warm and welcome every second they spend inside the all-new Mazda MX-30. Easy Charging Options; The Mazda MX-30 is equipped with a light battery (with a capacity of 35.5kWh) which has a cruising range of 200km, or up to 262km in an urban environment, while a charging time up to 80% with a 50kWh quick charger is 30-40 minutes. Mazda’s justification for using a relatively small battery in the MX-30 is that most users don’t actually need a bigger battery, and making those big batteries involves a lot of raw materials and energy. The new MX-30 premieres Mazda’s ingenious zero-emission SKYACTIV-e powerplant. Staying true to the ‘Jinbai Ittai - car and driver as one’ ethos - found across Mazda’s combustion engine range, the MX-30 has been engineered to drive more dynamically than any other car in its segment. The new MX-30 is equipped with both a ‘Type 2 mode 2’ charge cable for 3-pin plug charging, and a ‘Type 2 mode 3’ charge cable for AC charging via home or public charge points. MyMazda Services;
App
&
Connected
The all-electric Mazda MX-30 is the first in the range to benefit from the
latest MyMazda app. It introduces Connected Services across Europe with advanced functionality that removes the barriers between the car and driver to create a seamless ownership experience. Functions include notifications if a driver forgets to plug in the charging cable, the ability to control charging using a timer, monitoring charging progress, and a range indicator. In addition to the latest upgrades, the MyMazda app gives MX-30 drivers real-time information on charging point availability and location, allows them to view key information such as plug types and opening hours, plus send the destination directly to the navigation system within seconds. Other convenient functions of the upgraded app include being able to control the air-conditioning settings remotely. As no engine is required, users can define the cabin temperature, turn on/off windscreen ventilation and adjust the rear screen heating before entering the vehicle. The ability to pre-warm, or pre-cool the car while it is plugged in reduces demand on the battery once driving. Extensive Specification; Trim levels in the new MX-30 consist of GS-L, GT, GT Sport (bright or dark trim options), and a limited-run First Edition (bright or dark) model, all of which offer exceptional value considering the extensive specification on offer.
Even entry-level GS-L specification includes 18” Silver Metallic alloy wheels, 8 speaker sound system, Blind Spot Monitoring, burglar alarm with intruder sensor and siren, front & rear parking sensors, LED headlights with daytime running lights, satellite navigation, Radar Cruise Control, rear camera and Smart Brake Support, along with many more comfort, convenience and safety features. Test Car; My test car was a Mazda MX-30 ‘First-Edition’, which looked ultrastylish in Ceramic Metallic 3 Tone paintwork. The electric motor in the MX-30 produces 145PS (143bhp) and 271Nm of torque for brisk acceleration. When called upon, the car can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 9.7-seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 140km/h. The MX30 inherits the fun factor from its Mazda3 and CX-30 siblings, with sporty handling, supple ride quality and solid body control through corners. The car’s rigid body structure was made possible by a bracing ring positioned around the low-placed Panasonic battery pack, while Mazda’s Electric G-Vectoring Control Plus system enhances chassis performance by using motor torque to optimise the front-to-rear load shift for improved stability. Mazda has engineered the torque delivery in the MX-30 to be more linear than most EV rivals, which makes the
car easier to adjust to for drivers from a combustion-engine background. Mazda has provided steering wheel paddles to enable driver adjustment of the brake regeneration, while the car also offers an artificial sound to indicate either acceleration or deceleration. Standard upgrade features in the limited-run First Edition Mazda MX-30 include an auto-dimming frameless inner mirror, front seat heaters, 18” Bright Metallic Alloy Wheels, mirror and head-up display memory, driving position memory, dark cloth and leatheralternative seating, power driver seat (8-way and lumbar), adaptive LED headlights, front and rear LED signature lights, rear privacy glass, piona black window garnish, cork inner door grip, and a satin plated D-pillar finish. Pricing; The all-new, all-electric Mazda MX-30 is a genuinely appealing EV which promises to be easy to live with, and easy on the pocket too. Pricing for the all-new Mazda MX-30 starts at just €30,975, and if you are quick enough, the limited-run First-Edition represent terrific value at just €31,795. Prices quoted are inclusive of an SEAI grant of up to €5,000 for private customers and a VRT rebate (T’s & C’s apply).

TOP DUBLIN MOTOR DEALER BACKS NEW NATIONAL AUCTION PLATFORM
Dublin’s Annesley Willliams are among some of Ireland’s top motor dealers who have signed up to a new selling platform that could change the way that second-hand cars are sold from forecourts nationwide. Autoauction.
ie will hold monthly live auctions to designed make the purchasing of cars from dealers around Ireland quicker and easier, to the benefit of both the buyer and the garage. Dealers such as Annesley Williams, Frank Hogan in Limerick and Finbarr Galvin in Cork are already on board. The first auction was held on the 12th of July. Autoauction.ie is being launched by the team behind successful national property auction site youbid.ie, which has brought a new
dimension to that market in its impressive first year. “There is a shortage of top-quality second-hand vehicles on the market at the moment, and we aim to be a one-stop shop for buyers and dealers,” said Michael O’Connor, Managing Director of autoauction.ie. “Our industry-leading auction technology makes it makes it seamless for garages to sell vehicles to private and trade purchasers with transparency and security throughout the process. “Buyers will find the most comprehensive and secure auction software on the market, easy to navigate, with smooth transactions from start to finish. “We are skilled auctioneers and negotiators with over 30 years’ experience, and
our process has proved to be a massive success for both buyers and sellers.” In advance of monthly auctions, garages will list their available cars on the site, and buyers can browse listed vehicles with the option to perform a vehicle background check. They can then contact the relevant garages through the platform to arrange viewings. “The benefits to garages are huge – we are exposed to a nationwide audience of motivated buyers who know the cars they want and trust the dealers that are selling them,” said John Fitzgerald, General Manager, Frank Hogan Limerick. “Most importantly, the vehicles don’t need to leave our forecourt, so we can use
Ron Hogan, Director, Frank Hogan Limerick, with Michael O’Connor, Managing Director of autoauction.ie. Pic: Paul Morrissey
Auto Auction as a platform in conjunction with our other sales methods.” Each vehicle is given a reserve, and if these are not met, dealers will be
contacted about potential negotiations. Potential purchasers register with the site in advance, lodging a refundable deposit of €500, and have 24 hours postauction to pay the balance
of the purchase price to autoauction.ie. The vehicle must then be collected by close of business three days after the auction. For more information see autoauction.ie
SSE AIRTRICITY AND VOLKSWAGEN IRELAND ACCELERATE THE TRANSITION TO NET ZERO-EMISSION MOTORING SSE Airtricity has teamed up with Volkswagen Ireland to bring more customers closer to net zero emissions by providing a green end-to-end solution for motorists switching to electric vehicles (BEV). The new partnership aims to encourage and educate drivers on the seamless transition to electric vehicles and how this will help offset carbon emissions. In return for transitioning to a 100% green energy solution, customers will save up to €1,000 on their annual energy bill. Volkswagen customers who register a new ID.3 or ID.4 model and switch to 100% green energy with SSE Airtricity will receive €675† as a credit towards their energy costs. They will also be able to choose an additional add-on from SSE which could include a further €320 credit, saving customers just under €1,000 on their annual energy bill. Both organisations are at the forefront in their respective sectors regarding targeting
zero emissions, Volkswagen is the leading brand for electric vehicle sales* with its all-new range of ID. models, while SSE Airtricity is Ireland’s largest supplier of 100% green energy.
Ireland’s Climate Bill calls for achieving net zero by 2050 and highlights transport as a key area for transforming and reducing emissions. Both Volkswagen and SSE Airtricity are committed to achieving net zero and, by providing road users with an attractive and seamless way to switch away from fossil fuels powering their homes and cars, the companies are accelerating the change needed to achieve zero carbon emissions. Rodolfo Calixto, Volkswagen Brand Director for Ireland said: “Volkswagen is the first manufacturer to produce and deliver electric vehicles to Irish consumers with a certified net carbonneutral balance** with our ID.3 and ID.4 models. SSE Airtricity has been a leader in renewable energy
solutions in Ireland for many years. This strongly aligned partnership not only allows our customers to charge their vehicles with 100% green energy but also gives them an incredible financial offer to make the switch to green mobility and energy even easier.” Klair Neenan, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity
said:
“SSE Airtricity is delighted to be working with Volkswagen to help share in their vision for a net zero world. SSE Airtricity has a long history of providing green solutions for customers and we know how important the decarbonization of transport will be for Ireland to achieve its climate
targets. “This partnership provides customers with a simple green solution for buying and fueling a new car. Volkswagen have done amazing work in producing these fully electric vehicles and by powering them with energy directly from renewable sources such as SSE’s Galway Wind Park, drivers can hit the roads this summer knowing they have
cut their carbon emissions and their costs with a deal that is good for their energy bills and the environment.” To find out more about this green mobility and energy partnership, visit volkswagen.ie/sseairtricity or contact your preferred Volkswagen retailer to test drive the all-electric Volkswagen ID.3 or ID.4.
