HSE WINTER PLAN MUST INCREASE OUR ICU BED CAPACITY Local TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe TD has said that the Government’s Winter Plan for the Health Service must include a focussed investment in Intensive Care Unit beds and that these beds must be permanent, not just wheeled out until the COVID crisis passes. Teachta Crowe said: “The Government’s Winter Plan for Health proposes to invest an additional €600m in

our Health Service over the next few months. We cannot simply throw money at the problem however. Any investment must be targeted and focussed and it must increase the capacity of our ICUs. “A 2009 report commissioned by the HSE said that Ireland would need 579 ICU beds by 2020. The staff I was talking to in Tallaght Hospital have informed me that we

only have 275 across the entire health Service. We actually have less ICU beds than when the report was published. “Those same staff in Tallaght Hospital tell me that they have a plan to double their existing capacity. All they need is the support from Government to make it a reality. We should be supporting our hospitals and increasing capacity, not commissioning

endless reports that tell us the same thing. “One of the main motivations behind the stringent lockdown we faced from March this year was so that our hospitals, and particularly our ICUs, were not overwhelmed by COVID patients. Had the HSE heeded their own advice 11 years ago, perhaps that would not have been such a dire possibility. “And this is not just as a measure to fight COVID; even before the pandemic, surgeries were routinely cancelled due to the lack of space in ICUs. This only allowed waiting lists that were already out of control to grow further. “The Winter Plan and Budget 2021, which is due to be released in the next month, must include a provision for massively increasing our ICU bed capacity. If COVID is to be with us for the foreseeable future, then it both sensible and the right thing to do by our Health Service and the people who rely upon it.”

THE CARPET MAN’S BUSINESS REACHES GOLD STANDARD Des Kelly Interiors celebrates 50 years in business, marking half a century since ‘the Carpet Man’, Des Kelly Snr, opened his first store in Glasnevin in Dublin. The golden anniversary will be marked by a staff celebration later in 2020 and consumer promotions reflecting the brand’s 1970 launch. Founder Des Kelly passed away four years ago and the company is now led by his sons Greg & Gerardo and daughter Youlanda. Many members of the extended family, children and grandchildren, work across the network showrooms and the online retail business. The company has employed hundreds over the last 50

years, many of whom have been with the business for decades. On a number of occasions, three generations of one family have worked in sales or as fitters. The wholly Irish owned family run business has grown significantly, based on affordable quality and expert advice in beds, floorings and home furnishings.

average working class family at that time and was seen as an unaffordable luxury, according to son Greg. “Des changed all that and made carpets easily affordable. He revolutionised the carpet industry in Ireland and some might even say that he invented it”, Greg says of his father’s business foresight. He attributes the business success and

longevity to incredible staff loyalty, with a number of employees with them for over 40 years. Members of ‘Guaranteed Irish’, the business has 90% Irish suppliers including Navan Carpets, Ulster Carpets, Furlong Flooring, Respa Beds, Natural Sleep, Spring Air and many more, a deliberate business position

to ensure continuity of supply, competitive prices and quality. The late Des was a pioneer, a hard worker and a tremendous example to his family, according to daughter Youlanda. “Dad would be so very proud to see the business he started from nothing still thriving and growing after 50

years. His work ethic and pragmatic approach was the best education in business that any of us could ever have had”.

Des Kelly Snr was involved in volunteering for homeless charities in Dublin. The businessman had eight children with his wife Youlanda, who predeceased him.

In the 1960s, Des originally sold second-hand furniture from his back yard, later extending to carpets and vinyl or was then called ‘oil cloth’. On opening the shop at Cross Guns Bridge in 1970, people travelled from all over to deal with ‘the Carpet Man’. Carpet was way out of reach of the

WORK COMMENCES ON €20M INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADE AT ADAMSTOWN SDZ

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD joined the Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr Ed O’Brien, and South Dublin County Council (SDCC) Chief Executive

Daniel McLoughlin, as work commenced on three significant infrastructure projects at the Adamstown Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) in Dublin. The ambitious large-

scale delivery of essential infrastructure in Adamstown consists of the construction of three separate projects: Airlie Park, Tandy’s Lane Park and the Celbridge Link Road. A combined

€15 million was allocated for the three projects by the then Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government through the Local Infrastructure Housing Activation Funds (LIHAF) with SDCC providing the extra €5 million in funding.

LIHAF is a key element of the Government’s drive to build more homes . The objective of the fund is to provide public off-site infrastructure to relieve critical infrastructure blockages. This enables the accelerated delivery of housing on key development sites in Dublin and urban areas of high demand for housing nationally. South Dublin County Council’s successful LIHAF funding bid for financial support was linked to the delivery of 2,000 new homes within the Adamstown SDZ. The delivery of these homes is currently underway with over 1,500 homes already

completed or contracted and the remaining 500 homes under construction. Within the large-scale delivery of homes, there are 300 homes at or below a cost of €300,000 and a further 500 at or below €320,000. It is expected that work on all three projects will be completed in 2022.

Minister O’Brien, said, “LIHAF funded infrastructure projects nationally are now beginning to deliver on the objective of the fund and yield the large scale housing supply. The projects in South County Dublin are at the forefront of this housing delivery. I commend South Dublin County Council for the work it has done using the LIHAF grant funding to drive the delivery of these much needed homes and providing them to families at below market price. Whilst just one element of our response to ensure we

build more homes, LIHAF will support the delivery many thousands of homes nationally. These social, affordable and private homes will help create new and sustainable communities across the country“ Cllr Ed O’Brien, Mayor of South Dublin County, said, “This Council has used LIHAF funding very effectively to unlock lands for development of homes for the residents of South Dublin. It is another indication of the Council’s commitment to meeting its housing targets and the proactive approach which it is willing to take to ensure these targets are met. The Minister’s visit also spoke well of his commitment to dealing effectively with the housing crisis and in particular the need for affordable housing in areas like South Dublin County”

CRACKDOWN ON FIREWORKS BEGINS ONE MONTH EARLIER FOR HALLOWEEN 2020 Local TD Emer Higgins welcomed the announcement that the guards have started their annual crack down on illegal bonfires and fireworks one month earlier for 2020.

hazardous. “A simple spark from a bonfire to an item of clothing can go alight in a matter of seconds causing lifelong injuries and in a lot of cases literally blow up in people’s faces

She said: “I am delighted that the Gardai have already started their annual crackdown on fireworks and bonfires, one month earlier than usual. “They have already seized a significant number of fireworks since early August. “They are now launching ‘Operation Tombola’ to further tackle this scourge. Deputy Higgins continued: “A firework display is beautiful when under safe supervision by professionals, not in gardens with children just feet from these highly flammable products. “There is a massive increase in children presenting to hospital, specifically with severe burns each Halloween.

She concluded: “Fireworks are set off in many areas weeks before Halloween

“The consequences of using these products and starting these bonfires in large open spaces are beyond

itself, literally terrorising neighbourhoods. These mindless actions absolutely petrify vulnerable people such as the elderly and people with special needs; not to mention the torment they cause to animals as they endure weeks of this as local youths just get a simple thrill”

RISING CASES OF COVID-19 IN TALLAGHT IS DEEPLY CONCERNING Cllr. Charlie O’Connor has expressed his concerns about the rising COVID-19 cases in Tallaght. Cllr O’Connor is a member of the Regional Health Forum, and says he is deeply concerned about the Covid 19 figures published for Tallaght Central and Tallaght South. “I am concerned about the rising numbers of cases of COVID-19 in Dublin and in particular the Tallaght area. I would like to remind everyone to follow the public health guidelines

currently being imposed on Dublin in a bid to reduce the growing number of cases. “This is a growing concern in Tallaght and beyond, that Tallaght University Hospital will soon be full and unable to cope. I am keeping in touch with local GPs who are deeply concerned at the situation. “I am appealing to the people of Tallaght, especially those under 45, to adhere to the guidelines and everyone must play their part in this ongoing battle,” concluded Cllr O’Connor.

€3.3 MILLION GRANT TO COUNCIL TO REFURBISH SOCIAL HOUSING

South Dublin County Council has been granted €3.3m to refurbish social housing units which will be re-let to individuals struggling with homelessness or on a housing list, local Councillor Baby Pereppadan has revealed. As part of the July Stimulus Programme, the Government announced over €40m for social housing that requires refurbishment in order to rent to families on the housing list. Welcoming the announcement, Cllr. Baby Pereppadan said; “This is the largest single amount

ever announced under this programme. “The Government is putting its money where its mouth is. “They have heard loud and clear that more housing is needed across Tallaght. Our Council area is receiving the second highest funding of any Council area in the country. This is a very clear indication that our housing difficulties are understood and being prioritised at the highest levels of Government “I am delighted that South Dublin County Council will be allocated funding of €3.3 million to refurbish and re-let 248 social housing units. This will help 248 families who are struggling with homelessness or who are on the social housing list,” continued Cllr. Baby Pereppadan.

“There has been a fantastic response from local authorities to the 2020 Voids Stimulus Programme. Nationally 2,398 applications

from Local Authorities across Ireland have been approved at a cost of €39.8 million, with further applications anticipated. The Department is in a position to approve these applications and South Dublin County Council can now begin its work on making these vacant units available for individuals and families so they can start a new chapter in their lives and make a home for themselves,” explained Cllr. Pereppadan. “The Government is helping local authorities and developers to plan and build better and more houses for people to live in, particularly during the current crisis. “This includes providing social housing supports for people who cannot afford to provide a home for themselves and creating an environment that encourages builders to deliver houses for people who wish to buy their own home”, Cllr. Baby Pereppadan concluded.

INTERNATIONAL EQUAL PAY DAY HIGHLIGHTS GENDER PAY GAP

In the context of International Equal Pay Day on 18th of September, Frances Fitzgerald, MEP for Dublin and full member of the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee, said that the gender pay gap in Ireland and in Europe is still too high, and must be eradicated.

Speaking in Dublin MEP Fitzgerald commented, “Despite the right to equal

pay for equal work being enshrined in the Treaty of Rome and later in the Treaty of the Functioning of the EU, we are still not close to making it a reality in Europe.” “Currently the gender pay gap in Europe stands at 16%, meaning that for every euro a man earns, a woman earns 84 cent. This is unacceptable.

If we are to truly be a Union of Equality as outlined by

President von der Leyen in her State of the Union speech this week, the European Commission must move to bring forward its proposal on binding measures for pay transparency sooner, rather than later”. “In Ireland we are doing better than the European average, with the gender pay gap standing at 7.5%, meaning that for every euro a man earns, a woman

earns 92.5 cent. However any inequality in pay for equal work cannot stand. Ireland stands as a strong, progressive country on the world stage: equal pay for equal work must be at the heart of this vision. I was encouraged to see a commitment to legislation to require the publication of the gender pay gap in large companies outlined in the Programme for Government. I call on the

Government to deliver this legislation urgently, and to

ensure that we can truly deliver an Ireland for All”

RATHCOOLE NEEDS A 24/7 GARDA STATION TD for Dublin Mid-West Mark Ward is disappointed that there are no plans in place to open Rathcoole Garda Station as a 24 hour Station despite a 37 percent increase in crime last year. Rathcoole Garda station is currently only opened on a part time basis despite a 27.2 percent growth in population Teachta Ward said: “I am very disappointed with the response I received from the Minister for Justice that there are no plans in place to open Rathcoole Garda Station as a 24 hour Station. “ I received this disappointing news after I asked the Minister a parliamentary question on her views on the recently released Central Statistics Office national figures that revealed Rathcoole had the fourth highest increase in crime in the country and if there are the plans in place to open Rathcoole Garda station on a full-time basis. “This is also despite a huge increase in population growth in Rathcoole which has seen a 27.2 per cent rise in population since 2011.

This population is going to continue to grow over the coming years. “Rathcoole’s closest neighbour, Saggart also seen a population explosion in recent years with an increase 46 percent population rise in the same period. “I recently met residents in Rathcoole, and they also reported an increase in anti-social behaviour and intimidation. They are crying out for the opening of a full-time station in Rathcoole. At present the station is only opened from 10am to 5pm weekdays and less at the weekend. “The number of reported theft and related offences in Rathcoole jumped from 272 in 2018 to 417 in 2019 and residents report that the respond time by the Garda is affected by the majority of calls responded from Clondalkin Garda station. “I will be continuing to put pressure on the Garda Commissioner and the Minister to open a full time 24 hours a day, 7 day a weeks Garda station to serve the four districts of Rathcoole, Newcastle, Saggart and Brittas. “

MACHINERY DEALS SIGNAL ‘RETURN TO NORMALITY’ RATHCOOLE COMPANY BELIEVES Signs that the civil works and construction industry may be returning to something akin to normal, albeit tentatively, can be seen in a number of significant new deals recorded Komatsu distributors, McHale Plant Sales of Rathcoole.

In one deal alone, Limerickbased Roadbridge – long a Komatsu owner – has purchased one dozer and fourteen new excavators of various capacities, adding to its fleet at a time when current projects include a major road project in Wales

and work on the high-speed London to Birmingham rail project. Other significant deals secured by McHale Plant Sales have seen Monaghanbased McCabe Earthworks add a 70-tonne Komatsu

excavator with hydraulic rock breaker to its fleet for work on the new Castlebar to Westport road improvement project. Also in Mayo, Harrington Concrete & Quarries of Kilkelly is being supplied with a Metso mobile rock

crusher for use at their quarry in Castlebar.

Describing sales of larger units as ‘the life blood of the market’ over recent months, McHale Plant Sales director, John O’Brien said “evidence that machines

of all sizes are out there working can be seen in the demand for service support, spare parts and utilities supplies”, a situation which he believes “points to the likelihood of a down the line increase in sales of smaller machines”.

TALLAGHT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL COULD PLAY A HUGE ROLE IN TACKLING WAITING LISTS

TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has said that the current attempts to downgrade Tallaght Children’s Hospital and leave it as little more than a bruises and bandages centre is shortsighted and neglects the very real

impact that Tallaght could have in tackling children’s waiting lists for procedures. Teachta Crowe said: “The HSE has always planned to convert Tallaght Children’s Hospital into an Urgent Care Centre upon completion

of the National Children’s Hospital. Their reasoning is that the resources from Tallaght will be required at St James’s. “However, even with the National Children’s Hospital way behind schedule, the HSE seem intent on pushing

ahead with their original timetable for downgrading Tallaght. It is impossible to get a straight answer as to when the National Children’s Hospital will be completed, but it won’t be anytime soon. “During the pandemic, waiting lists across the health service have grown even longer. There are almost

700 children waiting on Ear, Nose, and Throat procedures that could be dealt with in Tallaght if they had the support of the HSE to provide the resources and staff necessary. “This would in turn free up space for Crumlin and Temple St to deal with the over 1,600 orthopaedic

cases on their waiting lists that children desperately need in order to have the best possible quality of life. “The HSE is once again displaying their complete lack of joined up thinking by downgrading Tallaght in favour of a National Children’s Hospital that is still little more than a hole in the ground.”

LOCAL PROPERTY TAX REDUCED BY 15% DESPITE BUSINESS LOBBYING At the monthly County Council meeting of South Dublin County Council councillors voted to reduce the Local Property Tax by the maximum of 15%. This in effect means that there will be no increase of the tax next year. Cllr Madeleine Johansson commented: “It’s very welcome that the councillors agreed to keep the 15% reduction of the unfair Property Tax. Prior to the meeting I received a lobbying email from the Dublin Chamber of Commerce asking councillors NOT to reduce the tax. It’s outrageous that the business community are using the Covid-19 crisis to attempt to shift the

burden from business to ordinary people. Ordinary people already paid for the last recession, including through the Local Property Tax, they should not be asked to pay for this crisis.” “It would be utterly unacceptable if the government leaves councils high & dry without enough money to fund basic services as a result of the pandemic, therefore leaving them with no option but to raise the property tax, rates and/or rents. It is outrageous that ordinary people would now be handed the bill for COVID19. The government has repeatedly said that austerity is not the answer to the current crisis we find ourselves in.”

DUMPING AT CAR PARK ANGERS CLONDALKIN TIDY TOWNS Cllr Francis Timmons said ‘’It’s disgusting I have been down at the Steering Wheel car park after speaking to the Clondalkin Tidy Towns group earlier that day. It’s a huge kick in the teeth for

Clondalkin Tidy Towns and is not in any way good enough or acceptable. I raised the car park at the recent Clondalkin Area meeting but didn’t realise it had got this bad. I have been onto South

Dublin County Council again to get immediate action and to the litter warden. I will also keep Clondalkin Tidy Towns informed of progress. I would appeal to people not to dump items

like this and also to anyone who witnesses this to report it to SDCC.”

SDCC PARKS RECEIVE 2020 GREEN FLAG AWARDS

Local South Dublin County Council parks have received their green flag awards for 2020, the parks are Corkagh Park, Rathfarnham Castle Park, Sean Walsh Park, Tymon Park and Waterstown Park.

Numbers of International Green Flag Award Sites for the best parks and gardens to visit in Ireland have surged again this year. Only awarded for exceeding tough environmental standards in green space management, and excellence of visitor attractions – the Green Flag Award for Parks is the mark of a quality park or green space and is recognised throughout the world.84 Irish Parks and Gardens from across the Republic of Ireland are receiving their 2020 Green Flags. The Green Flag Community Award extends the Scheme to include community initiatives such as Community

Gardens, Community Parks, and Tidy Towns Projects.

By providing our community green spaces with access to Green Flag Award best practice we empower community groups to improve their local community and environment. In Ireland the coordination of the Green Flag Community Award Scheme is made possible by the support of the Department of Rural and Community Development. The Minister of State for Community Development and Charities; Joe O’Brien stated that “This year we have appreciated the importance of the public parks and gardens within our communities probably more than at any other time. They have supported us all in maintaining a significant quality of life during restrictions, uncertainty,

and upset. Without our public parks and gardens our lives would have been much further reduced and confined. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the hard work put in by park staff, and community volunteers, across the country. Not only in achieving this Green Flag Success for Ireland today, but in maintaining the many parks, gardens, and greens across the country for our mutual benefit. It is a great credit that they largely remained open and well managed at this difficult time.” The Green Flag Awards are judged every year by a peer jury of green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability, and community involvement.

EDUCATION FEATURE

7 Benefits of Going Back to School as an Adult

Whether you’re 55 or 25, going back to education as an adult is a different experience than going straight from Secondary

School, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be more difficult — it might actually be easier for you. Because of your age, you

have a base of education, experience, and knowledge that will equip you to go back to school with an advantage.

Here are 7 reasons why:

1. You have work experience: Chances are that you have had at least one job, if not several careers, so far in your life. In your class discussions, you’ll be asked to talk about how that week’s lesson relates to a situation you’ve experienced on the job. You’ll have an advantage because of your work experience. 2. There are more programs available now: With today’s multiple job fields, colleges and universities offer more programs now than ever before. There are usually multiple certification options within your job field, whether you’re earning a diploma or degree in fields such as education, business, or technology.

3. You’ll use your time wisely: As an adult, you probably don’t have a lot of extra time. Because of this, you won’t want to waste your time by procrastinating your assignments or college work. The time you do have for studying will most likely be used efficiently. 4. You’re serious about graduating & qualifying: Most students that attend college as an adult have an end goal in mind. This goal is usually graduation, since a certification can further your career and potentially give you a salary increase. This will inspire you to finish strong. 5. The education will pertain to your career: Whether you want to go back to school to switch careers or you want to excel in your current

career, the education you’ll be receiving will most likely compliment your job field. This will allow you to engage in the classes and help you succeed at work from day one of classes. 6. You’ll grow your professional network: Attending school with other working adults will give you the opportunity to learn from them and grow your network. You might be inspired by their stories, but you will also meet people that can connect you with a new company or position. 7. ACCESS TO SUPPORTS IS VITAL FOR HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS

Mark Ward TD, Sinn Féin spokesperson for Mental Health has reiterated his calls that money announced for mental health supports in higher education institutions goes to where it is needed and does not get lost in red tape and bureaucracy. His calls were prior to the recent CAO offers being announced. Teachta Ward said: “It was announced by the government recently with great fanfare that over €5 million was secured for student mental health supports in institutions of higher education nationwide. “The CAO offers were released recently and the Minister needs to ensure there is a mental health strategy in place for when students begin the next leg of their educational journey. It is vitally important that the additional funding of €3 million that was recently announced goes straight to the colleges so they can provide the much-needed mental health supports for students “And whilst any additional funding for mental health support is welcome it is worth noting that this is not new

ISSU LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE AS GAEILGE As of the18th September, the Irish Second-Level Students’ Union (ISSU) now provides its website and services in Irish as well as English. The resource has been led by ISSU Irish Language Officer and Rinn ua gCuanach resident Katie Halpin-Hill, and ISSU Communications Officer Emer Neville. Speaking at the launch, Ms. Halpin-Hill noted that “the Irish language is an imperative part of our culture, our education and our future. At the ISSU, we want to reflect that importance in our work. Over the past few months, we have been striving to become a bilingual institution to ensure that

no student is left behind.” This move comes after a reform of the ISSU website, and an explosion of engagement with the ISSU in recent months. “Following a number of events in the past few months our engagement has risen substantially which is absolutely fantastic to see. I’m hopeful that the addition of our Irish language website will further increase this rise as well as making our work and supports accessible for more students.” The ISSU’s resources and supports are now available in Irish, and English at issu.ie.

funding. “€2 million of this funding is old money. The money was already promised to institutions by Minister Harris’ predecessors in 2019. “It is vitally important that the additional funding of €3m that was recently announced goes straight to the colleges so they can provide the muchneeded mental health supports for students.” “Student Counselling Services (SCS) are doing a good job but are highly stretched and under-resourced. These services are highly valued by students but access to these services can be a challenge. “Waiting 9 weeks for an appointment to see a counsellor is not good enough. Early intervention is the key in preventing more acute mental health issues from manifesting. “Higher Education like many other institutions will find it hard to operate when online or blended learning is the only option. “This is devastating to students not just in an

academic sense but learning online requires a high degree of independent study that many will find hard. I know from personal experience as someone who entered 3rd level education as an adult learner that I would have struggled without the peer and lecturer support. “Losing out on the overall college experience could have a detrimental impact on students wellbeing and their ability to finish their education. While the qualification is the goal for students the journey in achieving the qualification is just as important to the personal development of the student. The friends that you make with your peers are lifelong friendships. The solidarity of meeting deadlines and cramming for exams are important and so are the student night outs. Access to Mental Health supports are not just needed for the class of 2020 but for all students in Higher Education” concluded the local TD.

ESKER BEAT FRANCIS INBRUISING FIRST GAME By Aron Hegarty Esker Celtic 2 St Francis 0 Esker Celtic’s recent U15 DDSL Premier 1 side battled to a hard-fought win in their opening league game against St Francis FC. A bullet header from Jamie Morris just past the half hour mark put the hosts ahead before Romeo Nweke swept home the decisive second goal on 52 minutes to put the result beyond doubt. The victory came at the end of a fiesty encounter in Hermitage Park between two equally-committed teams as the tackles flew in throughout. Ultimately the better opportunities fell Esker’s way, two of which they

converted, as Francis were unable to turn their potent counter-attacking play into chances.

Following a rusty start from Esker, Nweke twice went close to scoring prior to the opening goal from Morris in the 31st minute. Francis’ best effort of the match came minutes after the interval from a Luke Feighery free-kick, which sailed just wide of the post. But Esker, aided by a strong breeze, pressed the visitors high up the pitch and played long balls forward from defence to catch them out. This approach eventually paid off when a ball down the line was picked up by substitute Ilya Bednakons, who crossed for Nweke to score from close range and secure the three points.

FRONTLINE WORKERS DESERVE A MEDAL Cllr William Carey has called for a service award/medal to be established for frontline workers who have risked their personal safety in battling Covid 19 pandemic At a meeting of South Dublin County Council on the 14th Sept councillors unanimously passed a motion calling for the establishment of such an award. The motion also called for a compensation package to be established for the families of any worker who loses their life as a result of contracting this disease whilst

engaged in their work. Speaking after the council meeting Cllr Carey said, “it’s important that we as a nation should recognise the sacrifice that these workers have made during the battle against this disease”. Cllr Carey added, frontline workers have faced into the unknown but did not shirk their duty when battling this disease. We constantly recognise the service of our military and the Gardai for their service and bravery and I think we should do the same for those on the frontline of this battle.”

MOTORING LIFE

WITH

Audi Q3 Sportback - Stylish Affluence By Breda Corrigan

The Audi Q3 is a stylish small SUV that combines the high tech features of a premium car and a cabin that provides a huge amount of space. The second-generation Audi Q3 competes in a market place that is worlds apart from the original Audi Q3 in 2011. Since the first Q3 launched, the whole compact premium crossover class has become populated with some very talented rivals. Not only does the new Audi Q3 compete against a plethora of rivals like the Volvo XC40, Range Rover Evoque, Jaguar E-Pace, BMW X1 and Mercedes Benz GLA, but also its own baby SUV sibling the Audi Q2, which was launched in 2016, and which replaces the Q3 as the brands entry-level SUV.

respect. The lastest version of the Q3 is built on the VW Group’s versatile MQB platform, consists of a fiveseat cabin arrangment, and is available in either a regular SUV bodystyle, or a Sportback bodystyle, with a fusion of coupé and SUV styling. There’s a new front grille with octagonal edges, new headlamps and the car’s profile is taller, which emphasises its SUV credentials. The Audi Q3 Sportback model brings added style in the form of steeply raked roofline, which gives a couplelike appearance over the standard Q3, and because the Sportback model is 16mm longer than the standard Q3, the sloped roofline doesn’t effect practicality.

Fusion of SUV and Coupé Styling;

Trim, Engine & Drivetrain Options;

The second-generation Audi Q3 is heavily inspired by the new flagship Audi Q8 SUV, meaning that the new Q3 body has grown in length, is better proportioned and a lot roomer that before. The Audi’s Q3 wheelbase has also grown by 78mm, while other major changes to the car relate to technology and driver assistance systems, bringing the Q3 right up-to-date in every

The new Audi Q3 Sportback is available in two specifications – SE and S line, with engine options consisting of a 1.5-litre 150bhp petrol or a 2.0-litre 150bhp turbo-diesel (badged 35TFSI and 35TDI respectively), while an ‘S tronic’ 7-speed automatic transmission comes as standard no matter what trim level or engine is chosen. The Q3 is available

with a front wheel drive format as standard, but a four wheel drive (Quattro) is available when specified with the 35TDI engine with a six-speed manual gearbox. Test Car; My test car was an Audi Q3 Sportback 35TFSI S line S tronic, which looked very elegant in its Dew Sliver metalic paintwork and optional 20” 5x twin-spoke alloy wheels. An impressive array of standard features adorn the S line, with key equipment such as front & rear parking sensors, rear spoiler, Audi PreSense front, Audi Smartphone interface, anti-theft wheel bolts with loose wheel detection, Audi side assist, Audi eCall, aluminium optic interior, hill hold with descent contol, progressive steering, electric tailgate, aluminium roof rails, high gloss package, S line exterior finish, S line sports pack, full LED headlights with dynamic rear indicators, LED interior pack, Audi Drive Select, cruise control with speed limiter, part leather seating, electronic parking brake, tyre pressure monitoring system, dual zone climate control, ISOFIX (front passenger and outer rear seats), front centre armrest, 10.1” MMI display,

Audi Virtual Cockpit, lane departure warning, and a tyre repair kit. Outstanding build quality is evident throughout the cabin of the new Q3 Sportback, while impressive seating comfort and roominess add to the luxurious and airy feel within the car. The Q3 Sportback’s raised driving position provides a good view of the road ahead, while rear seat passengers will also benefit from their elevated seating position.

Excellent Driving Dynamics; The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine in my test car performed admirably in all situations, and on a wide variety of road surfaces. With 150bhp and a hefty 340Nm of torque available, a top speed of 205km/h is achievable (where permitted), while the 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in as little as 9.3-seconds. A fuel consumption figure as low as 5.9l/100km (47.9mpg) was achieved when tested under strict new WLTP real-world fuel consumption testing proceedures, meaning that the Q3’s standard 60-litre fuel tank is capable of up to 1,000km’s between fills, while annual road tax is just €270. Audi’s slick-shifting seven speed automatic (S tronic) transmission is faultless, and can be placed in normal drive (D) mode, or in sport (S) mode for times when you want to turn the Q3 into something more like a sports car. As a result of a well balanced suspension set-up and terrific chassis control, the new Q3 possesses

excellent driving dynamics which keen drivers will truly enjoy. A standard sounddeadening windscreen eliminates excessive wind and tyre noise when on the move, while light steering proves very useful when maneuvering in and out of tight parking spaces. Verdict & Pricing; Overall, the new Audi Q3 Sportback (like its regular Q3 sibling) is a compelling choice among luxury subcompact SUVs. It’s a well-rounded vehicle, combining an elegant, feature-rich interior with a comfortable ride and spirited handling. An extensive list of standard safety features that include emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist provides ultimate reassurance on the road. With a youthful flair, the handsome and robust new Audi Q3 Sportback epitomises stylish affluence. Pricing starts at €41,400 and represents a €1,000 premium over the regular Q3 SUV, while Audi’s 3-year/100,000km warranty comes as standard.
