HSE DELAY ON APPOINTING PSYCHOLOGISTS IS PATHETIC

Local T.D. Seán Crowe, has described the news that less than half of assistant psychologists promised two years ago by the government are not in place as “pathetic”. Of the 114 assistant psychologist posts promised in 2017, only 55 are currently in place. The TD said it was another blatantly obvious reason why waiting lists are getting longer. Deputy Seán Crowe said: “Ireland has one of the highest rates of

mental health illness in Europe, ranking joint third out of the 36 countries surveyed in a new OECD report. Every day, we hear stories from families who are being let down by gaps in our mental health services. “In 2017 the government pledged 114 post for assistant psychologists in the Primary Care service, that would work with a suitably qualified Psychologist. To date only 55 are currently in place. “It is blatantly obvious to most people

that if you are missing key personnel, waiting lists will get longer and longer, with vulnerable patients continuing to regress. Unfortunately, this hasn’t registered with the HSE and this government.

“7,485 people were waiting for an appointment with a psychologist at the end of June 2017, with 1,784 waiting for more than a year. By August this year this had risen to 9,044 people waiting for an appointment and

2,526 of them waiting more than a year. “It is the poor, the less well off, the vulnerable, the hard pressed, the young, the aged, and those who most need the supports who are being impacted the most by these long waiting lists. “We have an understaffed, underfunded, and under resourced mental health service. Sadly, it is now seems too much to expect that if the government and the HSE agree to hire additional staff, like assistant psychologists, to deal with critical shortages in crucial health care provision, that they would then abide by this promise and hire the necessary staff to tackle dangerously long waiting lists.”

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES AND PURPLE LIGHT UP December 3rd marked the first major Irish involvement in the International Day of Persons with a Disability event and the associated Purple Light Up Day that features public buildings illuminated in purple. Started originally in 1992 when it was proclaimed by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 47/3, the event is now gaining ground in Ireland and on Tuesday the Central Remedial Clinic Day Centre in Firhouse, Dublin formally launched the CRC Purple Ribbon campaign.

Minister of State for Disability Issues Finian

McGrath spoke at the launch about the theme for the 2019 Event, ‘The Future is Accessible’, saying that a person’s disability or health should not dictate the path they take in life. The government are taking a strategic approach to disability planning through the National Disability Inclusion Strategy, he said, and that this ‘whole of government approach’ will make improving the lives of people with disabilities the responsibility of every government minister.

Behind the scenes, there is a radical programme of reconfiguration of

services underway to make this a reality, removing the barriers that impact on accessing services education and work.

CRC Firhouse centre manager Breda Gavagan was delighted to be able to host the launch and explained how the CRC became involved in the Purple Ribbon event. “Last year the people who attend the centre here designed a ribbon badge to raise awareness of adults with a physical disability”, she said, “but this year they redesigned it to tie-in with the international event and changed the colour to purple. Remember, disability touches the lives of everyone at some stage, so through events like this we can have an impact on our environment and on our shared future”. Last year’s ribbon was seen to be worn by several TDs in Dáil Eireann, and Breda hopes that this year the

campaign will gain even more publicity, spreading awareness of the issues facing persons who have a disability. The awardwinning Firhouse CRC centre recently opened a community based, fully wheelchair-accessible garden designed and built in close co-operation with South Dublin County Council. A history of this sort

of community involvement in the area meant that Councillors Alan Edge and Charlie O’Connor also attended the launch event along with representatives of local schools and businesses who turned out to support the centre.

A group of volunteer collectors from the local community helped sell

the ribbons, including 32 Transition Year students from nearby Firhouse Community College working on a school TY Initiative who took it upon themselves to sell the ribbons at The Square Shopping Centre, Tallaght. They all reported getting a warm and generous reception and everyone is looking forward to growing the event for 2020.

CUTS TO SUMMER WORKS SCHEME DETRIMENTAL TO LOCAL SCHOOLS Gino Kenny TD says “It is completely unacceptable for students and teachers to work in substandard buildings” The Government have just announced cuts of over a third to the budget that funds small and medium scale building works that improve and upgrade existing school buildings.

Local People Before Profit TD, Gino Kenny says: “This cut of €17 million to fund essential remedial and upgrade work to schools will mean the further degradation of many of our schools that are working out of buildings, which quite frankly, could have serious health and safety implications. “Scoil Áine Naofa in Lucan is one such school that is adversely affected. I have recently been in contact with school staff who have reported the urgent need for the roof to be replaced. In the past, the Summer Works project

would have funded this type of essential work. However, the school has had its application for these vital repairs refused. “The Lucan school is awaiting a comprehensive extension and refurbishment programme since 2003 but in the interim, remedial work on the roof is urgently needed. With the huge growth in housing estates in the area, the school is under huge pressure to meet the spiralling demand. It is completely unacceptable for students and teachers to work in substandard buildings. “I have submitted Parliamentary Questions to the Minister on the issue and I urge him to reverse the cuts so that schools like Scoil Áine Naofa can have essential work carried out, and children and staff can learn and work in a building that is fit for purpose,” added Deputy Kenny.

TALLAGHT UILLEANN PIPER PLAYS AT GAY BYRNE’S FUNERAL Pictured Uilleann Piper Eamonn Walsh from St Maelruans Park, Tallaght playing at St Fintan’s cemetery Dublin for the late broadcaster Gay Byrne. Eamonn played as the cortege arrived at the gates of St Fintan’s cemetery and again at the graveside. Among the pieces of music Eamonn played was “The Parting Glass”, “You Raise Me Up” and after the coffin was lowered into the grave, Eamonn played “Gabriel’s Oboe” by Ennio Morricone from the Film “The Mission”. Eamonn received a round of applause after the lament and Gay Byrne’s wife Kathleen Watkins and members of the Byrne family thanked Eamonn and said they were moved by the beautiful haunting sound of the Uilleann Pipes.

LEGISLATION ON GIFT VOUCHERS TO BOOST CONSUMER RIGHTS Cllr Emer Higgins said the Bill will ensure that all gift vouchers have a minimum expiry date of 5 years bringing much needed certainty to consumers. “This is a really welcome example of good consumer legislation coming in at the right time- just before the peak Christmas shopping period. “The law will ensure that all gift vouchers have a minimum expiry date of 5 years, bringing much needed certainty to consumers. When people receive a gift voucher they might not be in a position to spend it straight away, or they might wish to save up to add to the voucher themselves. The new minimum expiry period will give them 5 years to spend it. “Too many people have lost out when their voucher expired. Often this is the result of confusion over expiry dates, with the big retailers ranging from 6 months to a couple of years. A set expiry date of 5 years will give certainty to anyone receiving a voucher

as well as giving peace of mind to the person gifting the voucher. “The new law strengthens consumer rights in other ways relating to gift vouchers. There will be a ban on shops requiring gift vouchers to be spent in one transaction, something that can be a great source of frustration for consumers currently. “There will also be a ban on the cancellation of gift vouchers, or the imposition of charges, where the recipient’s name is registered incorrectly. This situation saw people unfairly penalised through no fault of their own.” Cllr Higgins continued: “I was really pleased to hear my Fine Gael colleague, the Minister for Business and Enterprise, Heather Humphreys, confirm that this legislation will be enacted in time for the Christmas shopping period. The Bill is being dealt with in its final stages in the Seanad recently, and so it looks on course to benefit consumers when they need it most.”

AGE & OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCES GRANTS FOR 112 DUBLIN GROUPS The Go for Life National Grant Scheme recently celebrated a momentous allocation of funding for sporting activities in older age-groups. The grants scheme, a combined initiative from Age & Opportunity and Sport Ireland, will distribute €32,355 across 112 groups in Dublin. Nationwide over 1,000 groups will receive grants totalling almost €300,000. The National Grant Scheme provides an accessible and enjoyable means for older people in communities nationwide to reap the health rewards from doing physical activity. Brendan Griffin, Minister of State with responsibility for Sport, said: “I am delighted to see that almost €300,000 has been allocated by Sport Ireland to the Go for Life grants to over one thousand groups this year. This means that 33,000 older people will take part in sport and physical

activity as a direct result of this grant scheme. Over the last eighteen years the National Grant Scheme funding has supported and empowered thousands of groups of older people to get more active more often and the record number of applications this year shows the continued importance of the scheme for groups throughout the country. Go for Life is doing a wonderful job of providing opportunities for older people to enjoy all the benefits that participation can bring” Local groups receiving funding will include An Cosan CDP The Shanty Education Centre, Bohernabreena ICA, CHIME Tallaght, Clondalkin ARA, Dominic’s Active Ladies Club A.R.A, Dominics Active Men Social, Kilnamanagh ICA, Kingswood & Kilnamanagh Active Age Mens Club, Kingswood Community And Leisure Centre, Knocklyon Ladies Club, Ladies Social Group Newcastle, Lucan ARA, Lucan ICA, NCCWN

boxing, dancing, aqua aerobics and handball are just some of the activities the grant will fund.

The Grant Scheme is part of

Age & Opportunity’s ‘Go for Life’ programme, funded by Sport Ireland, and delivered nationwide with the support of Local Sports Partnerships and the HSE.

MORE ACTION IN TACKLING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN NEEDED Frances Fitzgerald, MEP for Dublin, has today rcently called for the European Union to take more action in tackling violence against women. Following a recent

vote on EU accession to the Istanbul Convention during the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, Mrs Fitzgerald noted; “The EU’s accession

to the Istanbul Convention cannot come quickly enough. Committing to taking action against violence against women and domestic

violence is one that all Member States and the EU as a whole should be enthusiastically committing to. Although we are currently waiting for the

YOUR MENTAL HEALTH INFORMATION LINE

The Your Mental Health information line, which commenced operating on a phased basis in October, provides signposting to mental health supports and services. Operating 24/7, the Freephone service provides information on how to access services provided by the HSE and funded partners across the country. Calls are strictly confidential; call takers do not ask callers for any personal information.

The recent launch is the culmination of significant work over the past two years resulting in a team now being in place to take calls from the public on a 24/7 basis, all under one centralised telephone number. This dedicated service will connect callers with a team member who will provide information about the supports and services available both nationally and in their area. The Your Mental Health telephone service is another great example of how we can continue to improve and simplify accessibility to mental health supports and services through technology.” HSE Mental

Health and the National Ambulance Service will work in partnership to facilitate the Your Mental Health Information Line service. The team of call takers are based in the National Ambulance Service Headquarters. The team has received the standard training for emergency call takers within the National Ambulance Service as well as additional training from HSE Mental Health and the National Office of Suicide Prevention which included information on SafeTALK, ASIST, Understanding Self-Harm, and Bereavement initiatives to assist them in delivering an effective information service and to signpost callers to appropriate services. Welcoming the announcement, Martin Dunne, Director of the National Ambulance Service, said: “We are delighted to be playing a proactive part in this important service, in partnership with our Mental Health services colleagues, working together to ensure that this initiative adds value to service users. This telephone service is a welcome addition to the

National Ambulance Services’ ability to assist the public, and we are delighted it is now live and freely available to those who need it.” National Director, Community Operations, David Walsh, emphasised the importance of the new service, saying: “This new service will complement our existing suite of mental health services, by ensuring they are as accessible as possible to the people who need them. This is part of a number of digital mental health initiatives that we’ve been developing over the past year. We have already seen a huge increase in traffic to our website; YourMentalHealth.ie since it was redeveloped last year and we have a number of other digital innovations in development including text based support and counselling online. The information line is now another way people can find out what services are available to them, particularly in their local area.” For more information YourMentalHealth.ie

European Court of Justice to hand down its opinion on the convention, this should not be a barrier to making progress in the interim, through such actions as making violence against women an EU crime, as proposed by Commission President elect Ursula von der Leyen.”

“While traditional forms of violence persist, such as physical and sexual violence and coercive control, new forms of violence against women are also emerging, such as cyber violence. To tackle all forms of violence against women, the scale of the problem must first

be understood. To that end, this week I wrote to Commissioners elect Reynders and Dalli to urge them to commission new studies on violence against women across the EU.

Only by understanding the problem can we then take effective action to tackle it.” “I urge all EU Member States to ratify the Istanbul Convention. The convention is about one thing and one thing only: tackling violence against women. All 28 EU Member States should work together towards the goal, and together eradicate violence against women in all its forms.”

BALLYMORE EUSTACE WATER UPDATE WELCOMED T.D. for Dublin Mid-West, Mark Ward has welcomed the news that Lucan and North Clondalkin are back on the Ballymore Eustace Water Supply, and has urged Irish Water to make this a permanent fixture going forward. Speaking recently Ward said “I want to welcome the news that North Clondalkin and Lucan are finally back on the Ballymore Eustace water supply. This is long overdue and long may it last. “In the aftermath of Storm Emma in March 2018, Irish Water switched the supply of water to parts of Clondalkin and Lucan from Ballymore Eustace to Leixlip water treatment plant on a temporary basis. “This decision was made after the cold snap led to burst pipes due to poor investment in water infrastructure. “These areas were then left in short supply and restricted access to water. Twenty months later and this temporary measure has finally been resolved. “Residents across Clondalkin and Lucan raised concerns about the change in quality of water. This has led to complaints in increased turbidity.

Turbidity is a measure of the total suspended solids in the water, the murkier it seems, the higher the turbidity levels. “In addition to changing how the water looks there had also been numerous reports of grit particles and a change of taste to the water, with scum like substances appearing. “The hard water from Leixlip also damaged electrical appliances such as kettles and showers. The reality is, some residents were forced to buy bottled water well before the boil water notices were even announced. “There is enough water in Ballymore Eustace which is supplied by Poulaphouca hydro station to supply the whole of South County Dublin, if seasonally adjusted. “I am calling on Irish Water and the Department of Local Government to invest in our water infrastructure to ensure that people will no longer be faced with substandard water services. “The people in Clondalkin, Lucan and Palmerstown can finally return to the quality of water that they originally enjoyed and deserve.”

OPENING OF THE NEW CRY CENTRE IN TALLAGHT

Minister for Health, Simon Harris, TD, celebrated the opening of CRY Ireland’s brand new cardiac screening and testing centre in Tallaght University Hospital. A significant investment development project was announced by Tallaght University Hospital in October 2018 which facilitated the re-location of the Centre for Cardiac Risk in the Young to the new facility at Tallaght Cross West. This investment project represents a unique funding collaboration between CRY Ireland, Tallaght University Hospital Board and the Department of Health. CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) is an Irish charity that facilitates free cardiac screening, testing and support to individuals and families who have lost loved ones to Sudden Cardiac Death or are affected by inherited cardiac conditions. Speaking at the opening of CRY Ireland’s new cardiac screening centre, Minister Harris said: “I am delighted to be here at the official opening of this new stateof-the-art facility that will help to save young lives. It is fantastic to see a unique public and private partnership with the Department of Health, CRY Ireland and Tallaght University Hospital for such an important and worthy cause. The opening of this new cardiac screening centre will deliver a much needed, modern facility to support families who have been affected by Sudden Cardiac Death.” Approximately two people under the age of 35 die every week in Ireland from Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD). Conditions that cause SCD cannot be cured, but if diagnosed, the risk of death can be

significantly reduced. The new CRY centre will provide expert cardiac assessment which includes screening and testing.

Tommy Fegan, Chairman of CRY Ireland, who lost his 24-year-old son Kevin from Sudden Cardiac Death in 2010, welcomed Minister Harris to the opening of the new stateof-the-art CRY Screening Centre, “I would like to thank Minister Harris and Minister O’Donovan for being with us to celebrate the opening of the CRY Centre. Minister O’Donovan has been an active supporter of CRY (Ireland), having witnessed the devastation caused by the sudden cardiac death of two young people in his home village of Monagae, Co Limerick.

are delighted to have supported them in this move. The new centre has shown how with some innovative thinking and combining of ambitions (of the HSE, Hospital Board and philanthropy) we can enhance our services for our patients who have been affected by Sudden Cardiac Death. With

the opening of the new centre we will be able to significantly improve access to this vital service. To find out more about CRY please visit www.cry.ie or contact Lucia Ebbs at ceo@ cry.ie or at 01 4142235.

We are delighted with the Government’s support which has enabled us to expand our services. CRY (Ireland) is delighted that the partnership with Government and Tallaght University Hospital will enable to provide an even more efficient, free screening and assessment programme to families affected. We also plan to extend our Family Support Programme to offer emotional support to families suddenly bereaved by the loss of a young member of the family”. Lucy Nugent, CEO of Tallaght University Hospital said, ““The CRY Centre was developed in agreement with the Hospital Board and CRY Ireland Charity over ten years ago, whereby the Hospital provided a dedicated space for the service with dedicated staff. It was clear that CRY had outgrown the space we had to offer and we

The competition, which Annie judged, saw over 2,000 children from 25 primary schools enter and the winners’ artwork was on display today at a special exhibition at The Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane. The theme of the competition was ‘What do you think Dublin Bus

wider Community Spirit Initiative which reflects the company’s commitment to playing an active role in the communities in which services operate. In 2018, as part of the Schools Education Programme, Dublin Bus Schools and Community Co-ordinators made 383 visits to schools to engage with children and young people across the Greater Dublin Area. The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Vicki Casserly said, ‘I would like to pay tribute to our wonderful entrants, for all

they have achieved and their continuous efforts to showcase our towns and villages as best places to live, work and recreate. Community participation is the heart and pride of our County’.

South Dublin County Council would like to pass on a huge thanks and congratulate all four community projects that represented the County in this year’s competition, their efforts and achievements done both their local communities and the entire County proud.

CANCER PATIENTS ARE FACING HUGE COSTS AND CRIPPLING LOSSES IN EARNINGS The Irish Cancer Society has said that cancer patients are spending an average extra cost of €756 per month, rising to over €1,000 in some cases. These costs relate to medical expenses that can’t be claimed back, costs associated with appointments, increased day to day living expenses and many other expenses that they did not have before they were diagnosed with cancer.

The Society released their second Real Cost of Cancer Report which found that cancer patients are also losing an average of €18,000 a year in income, or over €1,500 per month, as a result of their cancer diagnosis, making it even more difficult to pay for increased costs. CEO of the Irish Cancer Society Averil Power today said, “Cancer is crippling people financially. Patients in Ireland devastated by a cancer diagnosis are then going on to really struggle to make ends meet.” “At

a time where they should be focusing on their health and getting through their cancer treatment, they are worrying about bills stacking up. Most patients and often their partners are already suffering huge losses in income. This can result in people having to choose between paying hospital charges over putting the heating on. It could also mean choosing to buy medication over putting food on the table. Nobody should have to make that choice.”

Sinead Kealy from Donabate was diagnosed with nonHodgkins lymphoma just months after giving birth to her first child. She said, “It took my family ten years to recover from my cancer diagnosis. I lost over €18,000 in earnings while I was in treatment and built up a credit card debt of €12,000 – all as a result of my cancer. It was like being hit by a bus. It changed my life completely. “I was just married, with a four month

old baby, I had a good job, and suddenly I was faced with cancer and all that brings with it. Besides thinking about how or if I would survive this diagnosis, things like heating costs, childcare, parking and food were a constant worry. It was daily struggle to get by and I often had to turn to the credit card. I live in fear of my cancer returning because I honestly don’t know how I would cope again financially.”

about getting better. We need the Government to stop the endless charges it levies on cancer patients. We need better access to medical cards and a greater appreciation of the huge financial strain of having cancer. The double whammy of increased costs

and loss of income needs to be taken into account when considering what cancer patients can reasonably bear.

The Irish Cancer Society will continue to push Government so that a more compassionate and

understanding approach is taken.” For the full report go to www.cancer. ie/realcostreport. Anyone concerned about cancer can contact the Irish Cancer Society Nurseline on 1800 200 700 or call into one of 13 Daffodil Centres in hospitals nationwide.

MEETING IN CHEEVERSTOWN HOUSE

David Berry, Managing Director with Kantar added, “This research clearly demonstrates the very broad range of areas in which cancer patients face new or extra financial challenges. The huge array of costs all add up to create a really significant and crippling burden on Irish cancer patients.” Averil Power concluded: “We are calling for action so that no one is more worried about bills mounting up than they are

PROGRESS ON N81 IMPROVEMENT SCHEME

Local Cllr. Charlie O’Connor, has welcomed progress on the N81 Improvement Scheme and raised the matter at the November meeting of the Tallaght Area Committee, of which he is Chairman. He pointed out to Council Management that there is widespread interest in the Scheme throughout the Tallaght area and residents were anxious to know

€25.00

the schedule now being followed in respect of the project.

Council Management told Charlie O’Connor that “A report on the Part 8 public consultation process for the N81 Landscape Improvement Scheme was presented to the meeting of South Dublin County Council on March 13, 2017. The project is spilt into a number of phases; Phase 1

is the section from M50 to Whitestown Way. Phase 2 commences at Whitestown Way and runs westwards. Phase 3 is from the Templeogue area to M50.

At the detailed design and construction stage; each above phase is broken into a number of smaller phases for operational and traffic management purposes. The initial works on Phase 1 of the N81 scheme have

recently been completed and maintenance stage is now underway. The works completed were on the section from M50 to the just west of the roundabout at Avonbeg and include: a new footpath for a section of the route on the southern section of the roadway, land shaping and forming, new planting on the central median and roadsides and re-design of the roundabout at Avonbeg. The proposed landscape works in the Phase 1 section were also extended to include an upgrade of the public lighting along a section of the N81 west of the M50, this work has been funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland. The detailed design of the next stage has been completed and will be tendered shortly; a briefing meeting is being arranged with the Tallaght ACM members in that regard. As the majority of the works on the N81 scheme are landscape planting works careful timing of

the construction phases is required.” According to Charlie O’Connor this is an important project for the

wider community and he has confirmed that he will continue to closely monitor the development of the scheme.

Kip’s Tips on Becoming A Confident Learner Increasingly at our tuition centre we are receiving calls from parents whose children lack confidence at school. We are always confident that we can help these children! Confident learners participate more, speak more, don’t necessarily make fewer mistakes, but feel confident they can learn effectively. Confidence is not exactly linked to accuracy; it’s all about attitude, which helps students get their point across, no matter how many times they stumble or make mistakes. It’s important for students to feel confident because if they don’t, they simply don’t learn as fast. Students who lack confidence often complain or say things like, “I can’t do it”; “I don’t know how to do that”. Lack of confidence could mean that a child never puts their hand up in English or maths, and consequently the teacher doesn’t get the chance to see the full potential that lies within the student. This may become a pattern which means the child may go almost unnoticed in a class of 25-30 or more. If you feel your child’s confidence needs a good boost, here are some ways to turbo charge it: • Don’t correct them too much It’s important to correct students’ mistakes but when students make too many mistakes, and you make it abundantly clear that that’s what they’re doing, their confidence starts to suffer. • Offer praise The other problem with corrections is that sometimes all we do is tell them what they did wrong and forget to tell them what they did great. • Teach in context We should always try to teach in context because it gives students a background to lean on • Give them chances to succeed • Make all learning goal-oriented I can’t emphasise enough the importance of goaloriented learning. If you set clear goals with your child at the start of the school year and even at the start of each day, they’ll have a better sense of what they’ve accomplished • Instill habits and use repetition from Day 1 Confidence at English and maths, important school subjects, tends to go hand in hand with confidence at school in general. By helping pupils improve their performance and attainment, our experienced and qualified teachers know that a child will benefit far more from the whole classroom experience. At Kip McGrath we structure the work so that our students experience success. This makes them happy and they work to achieve more of the same. Being successful can help a shy child to come out of their shell. Teachers always tend to notice when this happens. It may also result in a much more positive Parent - Teacher evening! If you feel your child needs more support with their learning, Kip McGrath Professional Tutoring can help. Call us on 01 490 8780 to discuss how we can help. PARENTS URGED NOT TO BUY QUADS OR SCRAMBLERS THIS CHRISTMAS

Dublin South West TD, Seán Crowe, has called on parents to “wise up” and not buy their children quads and scramblers as presents this Christmas. The Sinn Féin TD was speaking after visiting pitches in Killinarden Park, Tymon North, Kilnamanagh, Springfield, and Dodder Valley Park recently. Deputy Crowe said: “Despite recent successes by An Garda Síochána in seizing quads and scramblers in recent months, their illegal use remains a constant danger and anti-social nuisance to the community.

“I was asked to visit a number of parks last weekend by residents and clubs that use the football pitches in Killinarden Park, Tymon North, Kilnamanagh,

Springfield, and Dodder Valley Park. “Evidence of tyre and gouge marks in the turf is obvious and evident to anyone visiting the parks. Parks and play areas should be inclusive spaces, but unfortunately this increasingly is not the case.

“I am urging parents and all responsible individuals to consider the effects the illegal use of such vehicles have on their neighbours and their community. Parents need to wise up to the dangers of young people illegally using them on public roads and parks, often without helmets or even the most basic safety equipment.” Crowe continued: “We know that a number of young people have died

or have been seriously injured riding quads and scramblers. Innocent passers-by have also been injured by the reckless driving of scramblers and quads on roads, footpaths, on green spaces, and in public parks. “In some estates and parks the scramblers and quads are out every single day with many people, especially the elderly, not feeling safe walking the streets or walking children in the park. “For many, there is no break for this activity. The noise pollution from the vehicles can run from early in the morning to very late into the night. “I am asking parents to wise up and think again before buying these vehicles this Christmas.”

An advanced chassis, powerful engines and a choice of driving modes put the driver at the centre of an engaging driving experience. Inside, Scandinavian craftsmanship combines with smart technology to create a place where enjoyable time will be spent. Inside and out, the new S60 exhibits the quality and sense of purpose that define the best Scandinavian design. For more than 60 years Volvo have been driven by a vision to create cars that enrich people’s lives. The new Volvo S60 is Volvo’s vision made real.

levels is hugely impressive, with a multifunction & leather-bound 3-spoke steering wheel, cruise control, keyless start, LED headlights with Active High Beam and daytime-running lights, rear park assist, 17” alloy wheels, tyre pressure monitoring system, electronic climate control, 12.3” Active TFT crystal driver’s information display, leather upholstery, Volvo OnCall, DAB radio, Bluetooth, ‘Sensus’ Navigation with European mapping, traffic information and lifetime annual map updates coming as standard, along with an unrivalled array of safety and security features.

New Standard of Safety;

Test Car;

The new S60 is one of the safest cars ever made, and is fully loaded with new technology. The S60 introduces a new standard to the mid-size premium saloon segment, with a luxurious interior, increased levels of space, advanced connectivity, plus Volvo Cars’ latest driver support systems, and other safety technology. The City Safety with autobrake technology uses automatic braking and detection systems to assist the driver in avoiding potential collisions, and is the only system on the market to recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. In a world first, City Safety now also engages auto-braking to mitigate oncoming collisions.

My test car was a new Volvo S60 T5 R-Design automatic, and was finished in stunning Fusion Red metallic paint with Charcoal leather interior for maximum impact. R-Design specification includes a comprehensive list of standard features, amongst which are Contour Sports Seats with Nappa Leather/Textile Upholstery, Black Headlining, Front Seat Cushion Extensions, Leather Sports Steering Wheel with Gearshift Paddles, High Gloss Black Steering Wheel, Remote Infotainment Controls, Sports Leather Gear-knob, Metal Mesh Inlays, Sports Pedals, Front LED Fog-lights with Cornering Function (n/a T8 Twin Engine), R-Design Tread Plates, Dual Integrated Exhaust Pipes with High Gloss Black Surround, High Gloss Black Mesh Front Grille with Silk Metal Surround, High Gloss Black Door Mirrors and Window Surround, Multi-directional Lumbar Support, Auto-dimming Interior Mirror, Multi-Colour Theatre Lighting and Puddle Lights, Ambient Door Lighting, Keyless Drive (Includes Keyless Entry and Keyless Start) with Remote Tag, Dark Tinted Rear Windows, Head-up Display in Windscreen, Headlight Cleaning System, Active Bending Headlights with Adaptive Shadow Technology, and 18” 5 Double Spoke (Diamond Cut/Matt Black) Alloy Wheels with 235/45 Tyres. The ‘T5’

Specifications and Engines; There are two trim levels in the new Volvo S60 – R-Design (sporty looks with dynamic driving ability) and Inscription (beautifully crafted, modern Swedish luxury). In Ireland, the new S60 is only available with a choice of three 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines for now – a ‘T4’ with 190bhp, a ‘T5’ with 250bhp, and a twinengine Hybrid (T8) with 390bhp, while a slick 8-speed automatic gearbox comes as standard across the engine and trim range. Standard specification across both trim

engine in my test car produces 250bhp and a hefty 350Nm of torque for effortless acceleration. The 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in just 6.5-seconds, with a top-speed of 220km/h possible (where permitted). Volvo claims fuel consumption as low as 6.6l/100km is possible on a combined driving cycle under strict new WLTP fuel consumption testing procedures. On The Road; On the road, the new S60 handles with poise and precision thanks to the cars direct steering and excellent driving dynamics, while the car soaks up uneven road surfaces with ease. The inside of the car is a quiet place to be, with minimal amounts of road and wind noise audible within the cabin, while the smooth four-cylinder petrol engine is one of the quietest around. Distinctive Volvo Trademark; The new S60 is a very handsome car, very similar in fact to the bigger S90 in terms of proportion but 180mm shorter and with enough detail differences to avoid any confusion on the road. The now familiar ‘Thor’s Hammer’ front LED lights and wraparound tail-lights are a pure Volvo trademark and are very well integrated into the design of the new S60. Beneath that refined, handsome exterior sits the same Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) that underpins all of Volvo’s larger models. Interior & Boot Space; As with other recent Volvo models, the

interior takes a refreshingly different approach to rivals. The quality of the materials used is exceptionally good, while the design is all about Scandinavian tranquility and serenity. Cabin ergonomics are superb, with many of the car’s functions controlled via the large touchscreen in the centre of the dash. The new S60’s useful 442-litre boot is a fairly standard size for this type of car, and is easily accessible by way of a wide opening. In-Car Technology; Technology is a strong point of the new S60. As well as the standard 9.3-inch portrait touchscreen that dominates the centre of the dash, there’s a digital instrument display, all the latest smartphone integration, a raft of impressive safety kit, and Volvo’s useful Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system – updated for the new S60. Verdict & Pricing; The new Volvo S60 is the sport sedan that rewrites the driving story. Effortless performance meets intuitive technology, while a sophisticated chassis balances comfort and control. A choice of driving modes puts the driver at the centre of a dynamic experience. The interior is tailored around occupants needs – a place where connected, easy-to-use technology combines with the wellbeing that only human-centric innovation and elegant Scandinavian design can provide. Prices for the new S60 R-Design start at €46,495 (exworks), with the Inscription model priced from €47,495 (ex-works).

MERCEDES GLB BRINGS 7-SEAT OPTION TO COMPACT SUV

With the launch of their new GLB – which arrives on the market here early next year- Mercedes-Benz has raised its SUV range offering to an entirely new level of desirability. One of 22 newcomers from the luxury carmaker that are set to arrive here in 2020, its appeal has been made even greater with the availability of a 7-seater version that is likely to prove attractive to families with children to transport.

Whilst remaining within the current eight-strong Mercedes-Benz compact car family – alongside the A-Class, A-Class Saloon, B-Class, CLA Coupé, CLA Shooting Brake and GLA – the new GLB blows open the definition of a compact car by offering exceptional levels of spaciousness and passenger capacity not naturally associated with its category. The first Mercedes-Benz in its class to offer a third row, 7-seat option, the additional two bucket seats, both fully retractable, provide comfortable seating for passengers up to a height

of 1.68m. Second row seats split 40:60. In the same spaciousness vein, the GLB has plenty of room in all dimensions. At 2,829 millimetres, it has the longest wheelbase of Mercedes-Benz’s current compact generation. Front headroom is 1,069mm. At 967mm, rear legroom in the five-seat version is said to be ‘especially comfortable’. Powerful proportions distinctive exterior design. Poised to become a potent contender in its segment, the new GLB is helped by its many unique and attractive characteristics – not least a pedigree that has energised the sales of Mercedes-Benz generally and led to some seven million vehicles in its class being delivered since the A-Class was introduced twenty-two years ago.

Powerful in its proportions, the GLB comes with a distinctive exterior that points to the off-road focus of its design. This is evident in its upright front section, striking headlamps, and short front and rear overhangs. Optional is

4MATIC all-wheel drive and a special off-road light which helps detect obstacles in front of the vehicle at low speeds. Available in three design and equipment lines, Style, Progressive and AMG, the various GLB model options also include a Night Package in which highgloss black highlights are applied give it a distinctive allure. An exclusive boldly coloured Edition 1 model is also available in the first year after market launch. Inside, GLB will have a distinctly high-quality interior whose offroad design influences are reflected in its instrumentation and controls elements, steering column, aluminium-look dashboard, doors and centre console highlights. Fitted with the acclaimed MBUX user experience system, its various other features include two 7-inch instrument cluster and media displays with touch screen facility; a sports steering wheel with touch control buttons, and a USB port and Bluetooth connection for telephone

and audio. Optional feelgood comfort elements include lighting, musical moods and seat massages features. Driver assistance systems include camera and radar systems that can scan the road up to 500 metres ahead and drive in semiautomated mode whereby, in certain situations, speed can adjust ahead of bends, junctions or roundabouts aided by map, navigation and distance information data. Optional lighting and adaptive main beam features enhance the offering, especially in offroad and rough terrain driving. Range and Price; Because of the time-distance to its arrival here, GLB models and prices likely to form the range offering in Ireland will be announced closer to the arrival date. However, according to Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars: “with every third Mercedes-Benz now an SUV, and every fourth a compact car, our intention will be to launch GLB with the

most competitive package possible, tagging affordable prices to high-level specifications in a way that will appeal to families”. Two suspension variants; The GLB is equipped with comfort suspension with steel springs as standard. Optionally available is Adaptive Damping whereby a valve in each of the four shock absorbers can be electronically actuated to control oil flow and enable the driver to choose the preferred damping characteristics. Engines; The new GLB is powered by updated four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines,

all characterised by increased power, improved efficiency and reduced emissions. Petrol models – all with 7G/8G automatic transmission – are: GLB 200 (1332cc/Nm 250 torque/), GLB 250 (1991cc/Nm 350) and GLB35 4MATIC AMG (1991cc/Nm 400). Diesel models – all 1950cc with 8G automatic transmission – are: GLB 180d (Nm 280 torque), GLB 200d (Nm 320), GLB 220d 4MATIC (Nm 320) and GLB 220d 4MATIC (Nm 400), all certified to Euro 6d and geared to meet RDE (Real Driving Emissions) Stage 2 requirements.

A HOME FOR WHITECHURCH BOXING CLUB CALLED FOR Dr Katherine Zappone TD has pledged her support for a permanent home for Whitechurch Boxing Club. Standing in the ring among a parade of young boxers, Minister Zappone was met

with cheers as she told the crowd of her personal love of the sport inherited from her father and her determination to help the club achieve its potential ‘just as it helps its members

to be their best selves’. Minister Zappone attended together with Independent Cllr Alan Edge and was speaking at the start of an event recently to mark the club’s tenth anniversary.

The clubs achievements, she added, are all the more remarkable given that they have never had a home of their own, with 13 national titles, 7 All-Ireland finalists, 18 Dublin titles and 19 Dublin League Titles to their name. She congratulated

personally Gabrielle

Mongan on her European bronze medal and was encouraged by the many successes of the club in regard to girls boxing.

She paid tribute to the dedication of the club’s coaches, including Tony, Andrew and Derek Delaney, Philip Hollowed and Vikki Whelan as well as the many

parents who get involved. Cllr Edge added that the club has a wonderfully diverse membership which includes members of both the settled and travelling communities in the area and is a really positive force in terms of bringing people together through sport. A permanent home is the least they deserve.

COUNCILLORS VOTE AGAINST CARBON TAX Councillors in South Dublin County Council have condemned the carbon tax as a “regressive tax” following the passing of a motion at the November Council meeting. The motion was proposed by People Before Profit Councillor Madeleine Johansson and also called on increased investment in renewable energy, public transport and an immediate stop to the issuing of fossil fuel exploration licences. Cllr Madeleine Johansson commented: “The passing of the motion sends a clear message to the government that there is no support for a carbon tax which will hit the most vulnerable people in society.” Kellie Sweeney, People Before

Profit candidate for the Dublin Mid-West by-election said: “The hypocrisy of the government on climate is exposed on climate when we look at this issue of the carbon tax. The government have not done the due diligence on the rate of fuel poverty in this country and yet they propose slapping ordinary people, who have no alternative to carbon heating or transport, with a regressive carbons tax. This is all while they propose to increase carbon emissions from agriculture in the climate action plan. People in communities that are barely getting by at the moment cannot afford to pay a levy for an inelastic product like home heating. People will either get poorer or colder.”
