ONE MILLION EXTRA HOURS FOR HOMECARE SUPPORTS Local Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Mid-West has welcomed the increase in homecare hours for 2020 announced in the Budget “I am pleased that an increase has been achieved and I hope it will go some way towards meeting the demand that is out there for homecare; said Deputy John Curran. “Fine Gael has allowed a crisis in homecare supports to escalate
over the past year, and the issue was always going to be a priority for us in Budget discussions. The service has been unable to keep pace with demand and we have seen a significant increase in the waiting lists as a result. “Allied to this is the huge rise in delayed discharges in acute hospitals; an issue that I have continued to raise. It would have
been reckless not to see action on this matter with the high numbers of people being left in hospital for over 6 months in some cases. For example 79 people have been waiting over six months to be discharged from hospital and this is unacceptable. I would have liked to have seen a bigger increase, but I am mindful of the overarching Brexit
situation country.

“Fianna Fáil has long believed that funding allocated to enable older people remain at home provides not only the best value for money but also reflects the wishes of most older people and their families. “The Home Care Package was introduced in 2006 when Fianna Fáil was in government and it remains an extremely important part of our health service. The government’s own Health Service Capacity Review anticipates an increase in demand of some 120% by 2031. This budget announcement is a modest step on the road to meeting that.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO LOCAL TIDY TOWN GROUPS
It is with great excitement South Dublin County Council would like to congratulate all the dedicated Tidy-Town Committees throughout the County on achieving great results in the 61st Annual SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition announced at the Helix, Dublin City University in Dublin on 30 September 2019.
All of our Committees increased their scores by at least eight points this year, with Rathcoole entering the competition for the first time, with a very healthy start. In addition to the increase in scores, Lucan again achieved a bronze medal for the third year in a row, and this year three
of our committees achieved Special Recognition Awards: Brittas – County Endeavour Award, Ballyboden TTSustainable Development Award and Friends of the Camac, came highly commended with a huge congratulations – taking the Overall Waters and Communities Award.
The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr. Vicki Casserly said “I would like to congratulate all Tidy Groups in South Dublin County Council who again increased their scores in the 61st National Tidy Towns Competition. I would also like to acknowledge the huge effort and commitment by all the volunteers in our County involved in their

local Tidy Towns. Thank you to you all for your fantastic contribution. A special congratulations to Lucan, who achieved a bronze medal for the third year running, to Brittas, Ballyboden and Friends of the Camac for their Special Recognition Awards, I am delighted with their hard work and commitment which has paid off and is recognised in this competition” Pat O’Sullivan from Clondalkin Tidy Towns added “Clondalkin Tidy Towns [CTT] was formed in 2012. In seven short years CTT has achieved a great deal. Our success has been earned through hard work, teamwork and the sum of its ‘parts’. Those ‘parts’ include many people of diverse backgrounds, skills, talents and a common desire to make Clondalkin a better place to live and work in. Their voluntary ethos is second to none. An integral component of our success has been the financial support of many local businesses and residents. However, it has been the
core funding by South Dublin County Council that has enabled, empowered CTT to undertake and complete many successful projects. CTT are delighted and proud to be one of the 918 National Tidy Towns groups taking part in this year’s SuperValu competition.” This year, South Dublin County Council are again honoured to work in partnership with Lucan, Clondalkin, Newcastle, Woodstown Village,
Palmerstown, Brittas and Ballyboden Committees, and newcomers Rathcoole, who worked tirelessly throughout the year to improve their environments and take pride in their communities. South Dublin County Council are committed to working in partnership with all our existing committees and are delighted to announce that we have two new committees based in Tallaght Village and Saggart who are preparing to enter
Tidy Towns 2020.
Clondalkin was announced as Regional & National winners of the Waters & Communities Awards. A brilliant achievement also in increasing their marks by 11 points from 2018 to 298. Clondalkin a beautiful village with the Camac flowing through it. Both groups Clondalkin Tidy Towns and Friends of the Camac work tirelessly to improve the local environment.

HIGGINS TO RUN IN BYE ELECTION Cllr. Emer Higgins has been announced by Fine Gael as their candidate for the upcoming Bye-Election. The move comes as no surprise given that Higgins was selected two years ago by the party to run in the General Election. But things have changed dramatically since then, and with Frances Fitzgerald now
elected to the European Parliament a vacancy now exists for Dublin Mid West in Dáil Eireann. The ByeElection to fill Frances’ seat is expected to be held at the end of November. Outgoing TD Frances Fitzgerald, MEP, nominated Cllr. Higgins saying that Fine Gael Mid West are very lucky to have someone of Emer’s
calibre, that she is an ideal candidate, extremely diligent and conscientious, especially in her community work.
She said she has huge initiative and has never waivered in the effort she has put in to the constituency. Speaking at the convention Higgins, who has been a Councillor
for eight years, said: “These bye elections come as we approach endgame in Brexit. We don’t know if in a few days time there will be a final deadline or a brief extension. The next few weeks could decide the future of our island for decades to come. This Government has secured the support of all 26 European countries to keep the border open after Brexit. We have been able to do this because the Government has a stable majority - when Fianna Fail abstains from voting. “There is a real and stark danger that these bye elections will change this. At the
most vital and pressing hour of the Brexit saga, the Irish Government could have its majority in the Dail wiped out over night by these Bye Elections, and fall at any time over any issue the opposition chooses to raise; even when Fianna Fail abstain. “How will the border remain central to the Brexit negotiations if Irish politics is in disarray? It falls on this constituency to play an important role. Keeping our seat has ramifications far beyond Dublin Mid West. Cllr. Higgins also took the opportunity to share her thoughts on gender quota’s, a controversial political
topic. “I am especially proud to stand before you tonight asking for your support to retain Frances’ seat, not because of some gender diktat, but because I am our best prospect at securing the seat for our party. There is no denying how successful gender quotas have been at increasing the number of women elected to the Dail. But, I look forward to the day they aren’t needed. I don’t feel empowered by legislation that treats female candidates like damsels in distress or by the idea that the rules need to be changed for women to succeed, I find that oppressive.”
KEEP CALM ON THE KENNELSFORT ROAD CAMPAIGN

Gardiner writes to Gardaí as part of Keep Calm on the Kennelsfort Road campaign. David Gardiner, Workers’ Party representative in PalmerstownFonthill, has written to the local Garda Superintendent concerning the existing, yet unenforced, ban on heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) weighing over 7.5t from using the Kennelsfort Road. “This has been an issue in Palmerstown for many years,” said Gardiner, “and yet we still do not see adequate action being taken on it.” He
continued, “Private companies are using our roads to make their profits without adequate consideration being given to the community here in Palmerstown. This is why I’m calling on Gardaí to set up checkpoints along the road and ensure that the ban on HGVs along the Kennelsfort Road is enforced.” The Workers’ Party will continue to escalate action until the appropriate measures are put in place for the safety of the community in Palmerstown.

PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT SELECTS CANDIDATE FOR BY-ELECTION
At a meeting of members, People Before Profit selected Kellie Sweeney as their candidate for the upcoming by election in Dublin Mid-West. She will be contesting for the seat vacated by TD Frances
Fitzgerald. Kellie Sweeney first ran as a candidate in the local election in the Lucan in May 2019.
She is a registered general nurse and a young mother of two children living in Lucan.
Sweeney said: “I want to provide an alternative to the political establishment. Fine Gael and Fianna Fail have failed to provide for ordinary people, the health care system is broken and the housing crisis is
continuing to worsen. The government pay lip service to the climate movement but in practice have no solutions to the climate emergency. “As a nurse who has worked at the frontline of our health service I have seen the eroding of our public health care system. With a million people on waiting lists we need to end the unofficial recruitment embargo. We need to implement SlainteCare and end the two-tier health service. “I have been hugely inspired by the young people involved in the Climate Strike.
As a founding member of the Plastic Free Lucan Initiative I have been campaigning to make Lucan a plastic free village. Instead of taxing ordinary people with Carbon Taxes we need to end fossil fuel exploration
HOMES WILL RECEIVE UPGRADING WORKS TO THEIR WINDOWS & DOORS
Councillor for North Clondalkin/ Palmerstown/Lucan LEA Mark Ward welcomes news that South Dublin County Council will be undertaking substantial works to upgrade their housing stock.
Over the next two years 924 homes will receive upgrading works to their windows and doors in the Clondalkin/ Lucan area. Cllr Ward said: “I welcome the news that nearly a 1000 homes
will receive upgrades to their windows and doors as part of an accelerated maintenance programme. This is the fruit of the last budget from South Dublin County Council and the work that Sinn Fein put into securing these funds” “Amongst these houses getting upgraded 284 will be a complete refurbishment involving replacement of all windows/doors at the property. As well as maintain the Council stock
this programme will improve the quality of life for Council tenants” “We in Sinn Fein are always looking to enhance our constituents lives and our input into the budgets over the last five years has proven that. We will endeavour to do that same going forward and will be pushing the controlling group in South Dublin of Fine Gael/Fianna Fail/Green Party to deliver a socially just budget”.
and stop the importation of fracked gas through the Shannon LNG. Gino Kenny TD, who supported Kellie’s nomination, commented: “I’m delighted to have Kellie Sweeney selected as the by-election candidate for People Before Profit. She is a great activist with
a real determination to change this country for the better. I have been working closely with Kellie over the past year and she continues to impress me with her enthusiasm and her care for her community.”

CRC FIRHOUSE DAY CENTRE WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD A local Day Centre in Firhouse run by the Central Remedial Clinic has just won the Day Centre of the Year Category in the Irish Healthcare Centre Awards at a gala award night held in the Ballsbridge Hotel on 27th September. Run for over 20 years by Manager Breda Gavagan, the Firhouse CRC Centre has been a feature of local life for a long time now, providing daily respite and activities for over 40 adults with a physical disability. The nomination for the award detailed the wide range of meaningful activities available, the quality of the staff, some of the community-based projects undertaken by the people who attend the centre and the huge positive impact the centre has had on so many lives over the last 25 years. Speaking at the gala ceremony after accepting the award, delighted centre manager Breda described how the success of the centre was a credit
to the outstanding staff team who work closely with clients attending the centre to make sure that their wishes are at the heart of how the centre is run, and thanked everyone for their contribution to the centre including the many local people who have volunteered their time over the years, making sure that the centre is firmly embedded in the local Firhouse community. At the same event the high standard of healthcare service provision in Tallaght shone out as many other local organisations won in categories of their own, including Kiltipper Woods Care Centre, several departments of Tallaght University Hospital, and the HSE and Jobstown Community, with many more local groups and organisations shortlisted as finalists in a wide variety of other categories. All told, a good night for the community of Tallaght and a great result for Firhouse CRC.

EDUCATION FEATURE
From the Courts to the Classroom Since 2013 over 3,000 transition year students have completed the Law Society’s Street Law programme.
Street Law is an initiative which places trainee solicitors studying at the Law Society in local schools to teach law in a practical way. Originally developed in Georgetown University in the United States, the Street Law programme has been run by the Law Society for the last six years. Each year, over 40 volunteer trainee solicitors participate. As part of the programme, the trainee solicitors attend an orientation weekend which prepares them to teach the Street Law course to Transition Year students at partnering DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools)
schools in the local community. This year’s Street Law orientation weekend took place from 20-22 September and was facilitated by Professor Richard Roe and Melinda Cooperman from Georgetown University. The trainee solicitors will start teaching the programme in local DEIS schools later this month.

Trainee solicitor April Rose Byrne taught at her former school, Coláiste Bríde, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 and said she was surprised at the students’ knowledge, interest and enthusiasm. “Although they were not legally old enough to vote they had so many views on past referendums, she said. “They were full of ‘what ifs’ and ‘how comes’ which was refreshing and allowed for further and more in-depth discussions.

“We covered issues such as the fragility of jury selection, prejudices, the media’s role and the restorative nature of the criminal justice system.”

HOMEWORK CHALLENGES: How to Help Your Child Most children struggle with homework from time to time - but some struggle more than others. Understanding the challenges your child faces can help you defuse homework battles before they start. Here are some common homework challenges and how you can help: 1. Rushing Through Homework All children can rush or may want to get it over with so they can do something more fun but rushing can be an ongoing challenge. How you can help: Some children rush because they don’t like doing repetitive work. For these children, you may want to try mixing things up. Try having your child approach the material in a different way. For example, if your child is having a hard time with a writing assignment, talk through what’s difficult. If vocabulary words are a challenge, try using them in everyday conversation. 2. Managing Time and Staying Organised Some children struggle with keeping track of their time and they may also struggle to break down a big project into smaller chunks, or make a plan for getting all their schoolwork done. How you can help: • Create a homework schedule. • Find a time of day when your child concentrates best and when you’re available to help. • Think about creating a designated homework space or homework station. • Show your child how to “chunk” homework with breaks in between. • Use checklists – it can be very rewarding to cross a task off a checklist. • Use a homework timer to give your child a better sense of time. 3. Recalling Information Some children study for hours but still have trouble retaining information. When it comes time for the test, it may seem like they haven’t done their homework. These challenges can be caused by trouble with something called working memory. How you can help: Make sure your child is studying in a medium that’s a good fit. For example, some children have a hard time processing and understanding verbal or written information. They may be better at remembering visual information, like maps or graphs.
CDI AWARDS FIRST-EVER RESTORATIVE PRACTICE ‘CHAMPIONS’ CERTS The Tallaght based Childhood Development Initiative has awarded firstever Restorative Practices ‘Champion’ certs to 20 community leaders. Many of the recipients were Tallaght based and the awards took place at the CDI Office with veteran Restorative Practices (RP) ambassador Fr. Peter McVerry and CDI Chair Dr. Suzanne Guerin of UCD. In ten years of leading the development of Restorative Practices in Ireland, this is the first time CDI has awarded this level of expertise. It means that these experts are now qualified to ‘train RP trainers’. Presenting the Certs, Peter McVerry said he was delighted to meet so many leaders who would be champions for their communities. He said they gave him hope for the children of the country. CDI RP Programme Manager
Claire Casey said this was a milestone for Restorative Practices in Ireland, and for CDI’s commitment to the approach. “CDI has trained in excess of 3,000 adults and 300 young people in Restorative Practices over the past 10 years. The numbers are growing all the time. Having 20 experts certified to this level can only mean further progress. “CDI continues to provide an
ever-increasing number and range of courses in RP and these can be viewed and booked on the CDI website, or anyone interested can contact CDI,” she said.
Restorative Practices (RP) are a set of skills that develop and sustain strong and happy organisations and communities by actively developing good relationships, preventing the escalation of conflict and handling conflict and
wrongdoing in a creative and healthy manner. Evaluations have consistently found that those who learn RP are readily able to use the approach; that relationships in the workplace improve; and that where conflict occurs, it is resolved more quickly. CDI is based in Fettercain and delivers prevention and early intervention programmes, consultancy and training.

4. Learning Independently It’s important for children to know how to ask for help when they need it. However, they also need to learn how to become independent learners. Eventually, your child will have to do homework without your help. How you can help: Even if you’re not doing the homework, you can make sure your child is. Help your child set realistic goals and encourage “thinking out loud.” Try using a homework contract. Helping your child work through homework challenges can be tricky. But in the end, you can help your child be a more independent and confident student. Sometimes homework challenges don’t go away, despite your best efforts. In this case, consider asking for help. At Kip McGrath, we create a bespoke programme of study for your child using a multi-sensory approach & their preferred style of learning.

BUILDING ON A FAMILY TRADITION
For over 100 years the Cunningham family have been funeral directors, serving the community of west Dublin, Meath and Kildare. Their first funeral home, located in Clonsilla, was their only funeral home until 1984 when the third generation of Cunninghams built Dublin’s first purpose built funeral home in Lucan. Over the last three months, the Cunninghams have invested heavily in the modernisation and refurbishment of their Lucan funeral home and are now ready to reopen the doors. Located opposite
St. Mary’s Church on Chapel Hill Lucan, the new funeral home is not just beautiful, elegant and tranquil but presents a modern décor and feeling. The refurbished building also modernises it’s facilities, functionality and environmental credentials. “We wanted to design a new funeral home interior that improved the serene and peaceful atmosphere of the original building but would also provide all modern comforts and facilities that families need at a time of loss” explained Ian Cunningham. The interior of the building has been
totally reconfigured by RMC Developments, headed up by Rory McCarthy. The new layout facilitates larger funeral services and will provides a new private family space for smaller gatherings.
All facilities have been fully upgraded to the most modern environmentally efficient standards. The newly refurbished funeral home in Lucan features new audio-visual facilities, a new modern office, extended service space, new air conditioning, heating, windows, doors, bathrooms and beautiful tranquil landscaping. Ian is the eldest of the four Cunningham brothers who
are the third generation of the family to run the business. He and his brothers Robin, Michael and Andrew took over the family business from their parents and their uncle Oliver. They are proud to have been joined by the next generation Eadaoin, Zoe and Robert who continue the tradition of serving the people of Dublin, Meath and Kildare. Robin Cunningham concluded “As a family business, we place great emphasis on taking personal care of our clients. We constantly reinvest in our funeral homes to ensure that they are a place of comfort at a difficult time. The redevelopment of our Lucan Funeral Home is an important step in ensuring that we continue to provide the best quality in service and facilities to all.” On 22nd October the Cunningham family and their team will host a re-dedication service with music, prayers and reflections to officially reopen their Lucan Funeral Home.
COMMUNITY CENTRE TO DWELLINGS DEEMED INAPPROPRIATE
Local T.D. Gino Kenny, has submitted an objection to the change of use of the existing building at 32 Ballynakelly Edge in Newcastle from a community centre to residential.
The submission is in relation to Strategic Housing Application 305343 for 406 residential units at Newcastle South and Ballynakelly, in Newcastle, Co. Dublin. Deputy Kenny said: “The application to change the use of a muchneeded community centre from the purpose for which it was built to residential is completely inappropriate. “There is a lack of community facilities in Newcastle already and with another proposed 406 residential units, this need will increase dramatically. There is a particularly pressing need for community spaces for young people in Newcastle so the
area desperately needs to retain the premises as a community resource. “South Dublin County Council has acknowledged the need for community space and have stated publicly that they are currently looking for a community space in the area. It therefore makes no sense whatsoever to abandon an already constructed community centre. “The Local Area Plan first published in 2012 mentions community facilities and specifically refers to youth facilities near St Finian’s Community Centre. However, due to the lack of development along the main street these facilities have not yet materialised. It would be more appropriate to use the existing community building at Ballynakelly for this purpose,” added Deputy Kenny.

MOTORING LIFE WITH
New DS7 CROSSBACK SUV – A ‘Different Spirit’ By Breda Corrigan The recently launched DS7 CROSSBACK is the first true DS product in its own right, and sits on the PSA Group’s EMP2 platform which is shared with the PEUGEOT 5008 and Citroën C5 Aircross SUV’s. Boasting a clean, crisp and thoroughly modern look, the new DS7 CROSSBACK certainly has a premium, upmarket appearance, while the car’s wellappointed and classy interior features eyecatching materials, buttons, switches and controls to complete the upmarket feel. Attention To Detail; To stand out from its talented competitors, the DS7 has suspension that ‘reads’ the road ahead plus other technology like night vision and a head-up display on some models. Available on some models, the Active Scan Suspension uses a camera that scans the road ahead and if it spots a pot hole or bump, it tweaks the suspension accordingly. It’s the type of technology normally found on high-end cars like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. DS has worked on the finer details to make the DS7 uniquely desirable - the LED lights, for instance, glow purple when you approach the car and the individual LED elements swivel around when the car is unlocked. The rear lights feature a distinctive diamond design pattern (the diamond design is repeated throughout the car), while inside some models have a clock on the dashboard made by up-market French watchmakers B.R.M. – press the start/stop button and the clock rotates into view out of the dash. So confident is the PSA Group in DS Automobiles, it will be the first brand in the PSA Group to get plug-in hybrid technology. DS’s involvement with the Formula E championship will finally be realised in the production car range with the DS7 CROSSBACK E-Tense. Launching late in 2019, it will be the performance option in the line-up and will use a 200bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 110bhp electric motor on each axle, making it the only four-wheel drive DS7. Engine &
Transmission Options; Engine options in the new DS7 CROSSBACK consist of a 1.2-litre, and a 1.6-litre, PureTech petrol engine with 130bhp and 180bhp respectively, while diesel powered options include 1.5-litre, and 2.0-litre, BlueHDi turbo-diesel units. The 1.2-litre PureTech engine produces 230Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, while the larger petrol engine produces 250Nm, and is available only with an 8-speed (EAT8) automatic transmission. With the BlueHDi units, the 1.5-litre engine is available with either manual or automatic gearbox options, while the 2.0-litre comes with the EAT8 gearbox as standard. Producing 300Nm and 400Nm of torque respectively, the BlueHDi engines offer terrific pulling power and outright performance, while returning exceptionally good fuel economy too. Trim Levels; The new DS7 CROSSBACK is available in four trim levels – entry-level Elegance, Performance Line (the sporty choice), Prestige (the posh choice) and Ultra Prestige (the extra-posh choice). All models are well equipped with even the Elegance getting 18-inch alloy wheels, LED front foglights with a cornering function, an eight-inch touchscreen, rear parking sensors, and a leather-covered steering wheel and gearknob, along with a host of safety features. Test Car; My test car was a DS7 CROSSBACK ‘Performance Line’ BlueHDi 180 EAT8 and was finished in elegant Perla Nera Black metallic paint for a truly executive look. Performance Line specification – befitting of its sporty status – comes with key features such as gloss black exterior trim, and the interior features Alcantara on
the seats, door panels and dashboard. Also included are heated front seats, a 12-inch HD touchscreen, digital dials, DS Connected Nav satellite navigation, LED headlights with DS Active LED Vision, 3D LED rear lights, dynamic indicators front & rear, 19” ‘Beijing’ Black Onyx diamond-cut alloys, tinted glass, and an AGR-certified ergonomic driver seat, while the amazing Active Scan Suspension comes as standard equipment only with the BlueHDi 180bhp engine. Regarding the interior of the car much like a good tailor - the DS 7 CROSSBACK will let you find the style that suits you most with four inspirations to choose from. Clearly differentiated, these inspirations incorporate the noblest of materials, used generously to provide a unique interior with a premium custom feel. The car’s tall, rounded roof means that headroom is good for all occupants, with excellent levels of leg and elbow-room also available for all five occupants.
the mix.
Boot space is equally impressive, with 555-litres available with the rear seats in place, and up to 1,752-litres on offer when the rear seats are folded flat – all of which can be easily accessed via a wide and low opening. When viewed from the front, I found that my test car somewhat resembled an Audi Q5 with its large hexagonal grille, while the horizontal LED daytime-runninglights placed into the car’s front apron look fantastic, and provide the car with a distinctive design flair. At the rear, the car’s signature 3D LED tail-lights are a real attention grabber, while chunky black cladding injects a degree of ruggedness to
Overall, the new DS7 CROSSBACK is a superstylish, practical, versatile, refined, and very spacious SUV, with a luxurious, highquality interior, and is powered by a range of modern, and fuel-efficient engines. Created by DS to tackle its German, Swedish, and British rivals head-on, the new DS7 CROSSBACK is a welcome entrant into the crowded mid-size luxury SUV market, and brings with it a ‘Different Spirit’ that harks back to the wonderful Citroën DS of 1955. Priced from €36,000 (ex-works), the new DS7 CROSSBACK comes with the reassurance of a 5-Year, unlimited mileage warranty as standard.
On The Road; On the road, my DS7 CROSSBACK test car made great use of the 180bhp and whopping 400Nm of torque available, by providing swift forward motion with even the slightest push of the accelerator pedal. Body control in corners is well composed, with the car steering with great precision, and strong brakes providing quick and accurate deceleration when called upon. Capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 9.4-seconds, the refined and punchy 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine can reach a top speed of 214km/h (where permitted), and is capable of returning fuel economy of up to 57.6mpg on a combined driving cycle, while costing just €270 for an annual road tax disc. BUDGET 2020 NEGLECTS LOCAL & REGIONAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL TASK FORCES
John Curran TD has said the Government’s poor attitude towards delivering much needed funding to the Local and Regional Task forces in Budget 2020 means they are letting down those most in need of support for problem drug and alcohol use. Deputy Curran noted the important that Local and Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Forces play
in communities across the country by providing a targeted response to emerging trends in drug and alcohol use.
“It is very disappointing that in today’s budget speech by the Finance Minister that the serious issue of problem drug and alcohol use was not mentioned. It simply did not feature on this Government’s funding
agenda for 2020. “During a time when problem drug and alcohol use is on the rise, particularly among our young people, the Government need to be properly investing in community-based services, yet this Fine Gael government continues to neglect this serious problem.”
several local and regional drugs task forces were set up in the 1990’s to reduce the demand for drugs and continue today to provide a targeted response to emerging trends. “As it stands, those working with a task force are
unable to kick-start priority projects out of fear that they will be left without funding beyond the initial payment provided. They therefore cannot plan ahead and they are not in the position to expand or deliver comprehensive services in
prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. “If the Government is serious about gaining some grasp of Ireland’s drug crisis it will move to restore consistent funding to Local and Regional Task Forces,” concluded Deputy Curran.
Deputy Curran said that
TALLAGHT DRUG AND ALCOHOL TASKFORCE UPDATE OCTOBER 2019 The media has been flooded recently with stories and articles about the medical benefits of Cannabis. The stories not seen in the media are the ones where young people and their families are being destroyed by weed. While we know that there are most definitely cases where medically supervised treatment with derivatives of the cannabis plant are having a positive impact on some diseases such as rare forms of epilepsy, these exceptional instances are certainly not referring to the street bought ‘weed’ that is being smoked by people in our communities. This is all causing confusion. It is confusing for parents, professionals and young people themselves. TDATF decided to organise a conference to help alleviate some of the confusion and to offer both scientific information and professional advice to the people who may be in a position to influence our young people. Speakers at the conference included; Grainne Kearney Young Persons Keyworker,
CARP, Killinarden, Suzanne Lindsay, Drug Prevention & Education, Foroige, Professor Mary Cannon, RCSI Psychiatry, Dr. Bobby Smyth PhD MRCPsych, Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, YODA, Dr. Colin Doherty, Consultant Neurologist, St. James Hospital. The conference was hosted by the Tallaght Drug and Alcohol Task Force and was attended by 180 people. The attendees included; Gardai, youth workers, addiction service providers, home school liaison officers, college lecturers, college students and members of the general public. The response from the audience was very positive. The panel Q&A at the end highlighted that most people working with children and young people are concerned about this issue and the normalization of cannabis use in society. CLLR. MOYNIHAN TO CONTEST DUBLIN MID-WEST BYE ELECTION
Fianna Fáil Councillor Shane Moynihan has been selected to contest the upcoming Dublin Mid-West Dáil byeelection. Cllr. Moynihan currently serves the people of the Palmerstown-Fonthill Local Electoral Area on South Dublin County Council. Following his addition to the ticket, Cllr Moynihan said: “I am very proud to represent Fianna Fáil in the upcoming byeelections in November. Dublin Mid-West is my home - it’s been home my entire life - and it’s where I’m raising my family. I think it’s important to send someone who can deliver for Dublin Mid-West to Leinster House. Cllr Moynihan said: “I am very proud to have been selected to represent Fianna Fáil in this November’s byeelection. I have been a proud member of the Party for almost 20 years and I believe we are now at a point in time where the country is in need of great political change. I believe Fianna Fáil is the Party to deliver the leadership that is required to supply that change.” “I
grew up in this constituency and I am extremely honoured to have been given the opportunity to contest this bye-election with a view to representing my community in Dáil Éireann.
I think it’s important to send a voice that represents local families to Leinster House. I am a proud member of Lucan Sarsfield GAA club which is at the heart of our local community and have been actively involved for many years.” “Childcare, public transport, housing, health and crime are areas of great concern to constituents. Raising a young family in the constituency gives me a unique insight into the everyday challenges faced by other families in Lucan, Clondalkin, Palmerstown and Fonthill. I will run a vigorous campaign which will demand improvements that enhance our environment and the delivery of public services in Dublin Mid West.” Cllr. Moynihan holds a PHD in Politics from Trinity
College Dublin and currently works for LinkedIn. “This is a really important period in our Nation’s history,
with obvious implications for Dublin Mid-West. I am looking forward to the campaign and carrying the
Fianna Fáil message to every corner of the constituency. I am looking forward to working with John Curran
TD and Cllrs Trevor Gilligan and Ed O’Brien in the coming months.” concluded Cllr. Moynihan
SAVE CLONDALKIN CONVENT CAMPAIGN CONTINUES So far, thousands of people have signed the Save Clondalkin Convent Campaign’s petitions against the proposals for the convent in the heart of old Clondalkin.
comprising a 14-bedroom retirement home for Presentation Sisters and at least 155-bedroomed private nursing home for the general population.
These would be erected on disputed land beside the convent in Clondalkin. The convent interior would be converted to accommodate more than
140 permanent staff. For more information see their facebook page ‘Save Clondalkin Convent Campaign’. Pic Credit: Alain Menez
The Bartra/Presentation Order proposals are with An Bord Pleanala whose decision is due on or before 21st October. An increasing number of local people have shown strong support for the campaign against the plans for this iconic 1857 Neo-Gothic convent and the surrounding land. They are angry, frustrated and sad that neither the Presentation Sisters nor the Archdiocese have so far answered SDCC’s many letters requesting a meeting. Bartra and the Presentation Order intend to build an enormous 4-storey retirement/nursing home
