SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL SECRETARIES
Upcoming election candidate for Dublin South West, Seán Crowe, has reiterated his support for school secretaries in their ‘Support Our Secretaries’ campaign for fair treatment, respect and improved working conditions. Seán Crowe of Sinn Fein said: “School secretaries are invaluable members of our schools and our communities, often working above and beyond their job requirements. “They work on the front line and are the first port
of call for parents and students. Without them, our schools would simply not function. “I want to reiterate that their industrial action and campaign for respect and fair conditions for all school secretaries has the full support of myself and my party. “At its heart, this dispute centres on the fact that the majority of school secretaries, over three thousand, earn as little as €13,000 a year with irregular, short-term contracts and no pay during summer holidays
or school breaks. “This is compounded by the inequality that persists between them and the few hundred school secretaries who are paid directly by the Department of Education with starting salaries of €24,000.” Crowe continued: “Minister Joe McHugh was made aware of their job insecurity and this two-tier pay structure in May of last year and has dragged his heels in reaching an agreement. “The Minister will claim that specific responsibility for the pay and

conditions of these workers rests with schools through the capitation grants they receive, and not his Department. “As the Government knows well, schools rely on the capitation grant to cover running costs such as heating, lighting, insurance costs, and teaching materials. “Secretaries have low pay, no holiday pay, no sick pay, no real job security, certainly no occupational pensions, and no access to public service salary scales. A Sinn Féin government will end this unfair system. “The public service should be a leader in providing fair pay and conditions for employees, but school secretaries have clearly been left far behind when it comes to pay and working conditions”.

TALLAGHT DISAPPOINTS IN IBAL 2019 LITTER RANKINGS The final litter survey for 2019 Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) has shown Tallaght has tumbled down the rankings. The past decade has brought a 13% reduction in litter levels in city centres, while litter in towns has remained constant over the same period. “We’ve seen the fruits of the greater attention given to keeping our city centres clean,” explains Conor Horgan of IBAL, “to the point where they are now almost as clean as our towns. In 2019, for the first time, all were deemed clean.” “Unfortunately, the gap in cleanliness between these neglected areas and the high-profile city centres is not closing.” An Taisce, who conduct the surveys
on behalf of IBAL, made the following comments in relation to the Tallaght area; “After making big strides over the last number of years in the League it was disappointing to see two litter blackspots and one seriously littered site take Tallaght down the rankings.
Pedestrian Access to Cheeverstown Road, from Kilmartin Drive has suffered from prolonged and serious abuse and neglect. Courthouse Square Car Park wasn’t just casually littered but a variety of items had been discarded, including pallets and bags of rubbish. However, half of the sites surveyed did get the top litter grade some worth noting were the Tallaght Luas Stop, Tallaght

2,927 DRIVERS CLAMPED AT LUAS RED COW PARK & RIDE
Investigation needed into Luas Red Cow Park and Ride with approx. 10 cars clamped per day.
John Curran T.D. has called on Transport Infrastructure Ireland to carry out an investigation into the ticket machines and payment system at Luas Red Cow Park and Ride facility. Deputy Curran was speaking after receiving figures from the TII in relation to the number of drivers that have been clamped at the facility in the space of one year, he said; “From 1 January 2019 to 3 November 2019, 2,927 drivers were clamped at the facility. 1,218 drivers appealed and 525 of these drivers were successful in their appeal. “I had received many calls to my constituency office in Clondalkin in relation
to the difficulties people were having with the ticket machines the Red Cow Luas Park & Ride and to find their cars clamped at the end of their working day causing a huge cost and inconvenience. “People have complained that the machines appear to not be allowing them to input their
correct car registration numbers but is accepting full payment.
On return to their cars however a clamp has been applied with the cost of €80 for clamp removal. “This is unfair, and people have reported to me that they have shown proof of
payment. These machines are not fit for purpose. People are paying, and it is unfair to cause this fine and inconvenience because of faulty machines. The TII and Luas must come together immediately to come up with a solution at Red Cow Park & Ride”, concluded Deputy Curran.

RIGHT TO REPLY FOR HELLFIRE CAMPAIGNERS Local Councillor Alan Edge has called for a right to reply for the Save the Hellfire campaigners after South Dublin Co Co confirmed that the additional information sought by An Bord Pleanala
in relation to the proposed Dublin Mountain Visitor Centre had now been received.
Stating his opposition to the project, Cllr Edge said,
‘It’s a fallacy to think that you need a €15 million development in order to enjoy the beauty of nature’, adding that improvements in parking facilities and other amenities could be made
Ó BROIN AND WARD WILL CONTEST TWO SEATS IN DUBLIN MID WEST The Dublin Mid West Sinn Féin election directorate has agreed that both Eoin Ó Broin TD and Mark Ward TD will contest the Dublin Mid West constituency for the part in the up-coming general election. Ó Broin topped the poll in the 2016 general election and Ward topped the poll in the November bye-election. Deputy Ó Broin said: “It has
been an honour to represent the constituency of Dublin Mid West for the last four years and to have been the party’s spokesperson on Housing, Planning and Local government in the Dáil. Retaining two seats in the constituency is a challenge but one that both Mark and I are up for. “We have been friends and colleagues for some years and will
campaign together to bring out the maximum Sinn Féin vote and do everything in our power to return two Sinn Féin TDs for Dublin Mid West. Deputy Ward said: “While I have only been a TD for just over a month it has given me the opportunity to raise important issues and pieces of legislation affecting people across North Clondalkin. “I would be honoured to have the opportunity to continue this important work and to be part of a strong and vibrant Sinn Féin team with Eoin Ó Broin TD here in Mid West and with the rest of our Oireachtas team in the Dáil.”
without resorting to such a large-scale development.
Following an oral hearing in 2018, the board found that the assessments carried out on behalf of Coillte and South Dublin County Council were inappropriate in a number of respects. Specifically, they were tasked to carry out a fuller survey of merlin, a migratory bird; to provide greater detail about the impact of increased visitor numbers on vegetation and habitats and to prepare
more detailed surveys and monitoring of biodiversity in the surrounding area.
The full contents of the new information have not yet been made available but Cllr Edge welcomed the Council’s indication that they would be published as soon as An Board Pleanala direct them to do so, hopefully by mid January. Cllr Edge praised the campaign mounted by Save the Hellfire born out of love for the landscape and its
wildlife and expressed the fervent hope that the right to reply would be given to them. ‘They have worked tirelessly and in difficult circumstances which included a gross misuse of the powers of the Standards in Public Office Commission’. He supported calls from fellow councillors from across the political spectrum for a full discussion of this issue in the Chamber and a rethink of the drastic scale of the proposal.

CASSERLY WELCOMES THE CALLING OF GENERAL ELECTION 2020 Cllr. Vicki Casserly, Mayor for South Dublin County Council, has welcomed the announcement of An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to dissolve the 32nd Dáil. The announcement makes way for the upcoming General Election. Mayor Casserly is a new, young and energetic candidate who was added to the General Election ticket for Fine Gael in the Dublin
Mid-West constituency in recent weeks.
Commenting on the announcement, Mayor Casserly said: “I am looking forward to canvassing and listening to the people of Dublin Mid-West in the days and weeks ahead. After representing the people of Lucan for the past six years on South
Dublin County Council I now want to represent the people of Dublin Mid-West in Dáil Éireann. I hope to build on my success in the local elections last year and in 2014 by running a respectful, inclusive and
energetic campaign”.
“I am a mother, carer, feminist and an advocate for disability rights. I want to be a strong voice for the people of Lucan, Clondalkin, Palmerstown, Rathcoole,
Newcastle, Saggart and Brittas on these issues. I am excited to run a vibrant and engaging campaign over the next few weeks.
I will work tirelessly to reclaim the Fine Gael
seat in Dublin Mid-West previously held by Frances Fitzgerald MEP.” Mayor Casserly looks forward to working with Cllr. Emer Higgins to secure two seats for Fine Gael in the Dublin Mid-West constituency.
HUNDREDS OF ELDERLY PATIENTS FORCED TO WAIT OVER 24 HOURS IN TALLAGHT HOSPITAL’S ED Seán Crowe T.D. has said the lack of planning for the health service throughout 2019 has consistently put the health of older patients at risk. The TD commented after figures released by the HSE showed that 467 patients over 75 years of age had to wait more than 24 hours for care in Tallaght University Hospital’s Emergency Departments between January and November 2019. Deputy Seán Crowe said: “All throughout 2019 Fine Gael have displayed disregard for all aspects of the health service and have no real plan to address the overcrowding crisis in Tallaght hospital. “Figures
released to Sinn Féin have shown that between January and November of last year 15,344 patients over the age of 75 had to wait over 24 hours for treatment in Emergency Departments around the State. “In Tallaght hospital there were a staggering 467 patients aged 75 years or older left waiting more than 24 hours on a trolley. “It is unacceptable on every level that many of our older citizens were left languishing on a trolley for two days. “Older patients are often among the most vulnerable citizens in our hospitals due to their age and the additional medical needs that can sometimes
accompany aging. Being treated urgently prevents escalation of injury and ensures safety and swift treatment.
fixed overnight, but they have had eight years to make the necessary changes and yet they have just made things worse.
“I have spoken to many staff members in Tallaght hospital and they are at boiling point. The doctors, nurses, and all the staff in Tallaght hospital do an amazing job but they are having to do more with less resources; they are treating more patients than ever before even though there is a recruitment and retention crisis across all areas of the health service.
“For over a decade now Sinn Féin have been saying the solution is more capacity and more staff for Tallaght hospital - however, the government are damaging capital projects across the State due to the children’s hospital overspend, they have effectively implemented a recruitment ban in the health service, they have consistently failed to properly implement a health service Winter Plan, and they now appear to have no interest in implementing Sláintecare.”

opened her first group in 1969 and over the last 50 years Slimming World has become the nation’s favourite way to lose weight, supporting almost one million slimmers. The team, who run Slimming World groups in Dublin, were delighted to get a chance to meet Alan.
Noeleen Herbage said it was the perfect end to a fantastic year for the Dublin Slimming World groups. “The members at our group make me burst with pride, not only have they seen big changes on the scales, many have improved their health and completely changed their lives too. “For many people, taking that first step into a Slimming World group takes a huge amount of courage. But they’re always certain of a warm welcome and introduction to our fabulously flexible eating plan which means you’re never hungry while you’re losing weight. And when you join a group and stay each week members support each other with motivation, tips and ideas, cheering each other
on and boosting each other to face any challenges. “Watching people grow in confidence each week and take on things that they didn’t think possible before losing weight absolutely amazes me. I feel proud of the small part I play in supporting people to achieve their dreams and to celebrate alongside them when they do, so we were honoured to represent the Dublin groups at the Slimming World Awards.
Alan was left in awe of the difference Slimming World makes to people’s lives too.” Alan, who presented comedy chat show Chatty Man on Channel 4, said it was great to be invited to the event, which was held at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre.
He said: “I met so many people who had transformed their lives and it was clear how much the support they received from their ‘Slimming World family’
meant to them. Every one of them spoke passionately about how they couldn’t have made those changes to eat more healthily and become more active without the support of their Consultants and group every week. I left the awards feeling so uplifted and positive, I wish I could’ve bottled that Slimming World feeling. For more information or to find your nearest group see www.slimmingworld.ie.

O’CONNOR CALLS FOR SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY CENTRES
Local Councillor, Charlie O’Connor, has called on the Chief Executive of the Council to ensure strong support for Community Centres in our area who are facing challenges with regard to rising insurance costs.
He raised the matter at the January meeting of the Council and stressed the concern of many who are contacting him in the matter and who are worried
about the future of their Community Centres. The CEO told Charlie O’Connor that “Community Centres in the County are managed by independent local voluntary management companies and are legal companies in their own right, independent of the Council and established as Companies Limited by Guarantee.
The management companies utilise a wide range of funding opportunities and

Boards of Management of Community Centres are also encouraged to take part and apply for funding assistance to help with the delivery of a variety of local community events.” The Council’s Community Services Department is available to advise, assist and support the management companies of all centres in the County as well as recognising the commendable efforts and volunteerism in managing community centres to support delivery of a wide range of community activities and services for local residents.” In his representations to the Council, Charlie O’Connor stressed the importance of Community Centre in the life of communities which they serve and said that local voluntary management
groups are being put under enormous pressure because of insurance costs. He said
that we must ensure that the future of our Community Centres is not jeopardised
and called on the Council to pay particular attention to the challenges faced.
IRISH WATER CRITICISED FOR FAILURE TO ACT David Gardiner (Workers’ Party) has criticised Irish Water for its “failure to act” on information it received which led to the country’s largest-scale water contamination warning. Gardiner said; “In 2014, it became apparent to Irish Water that failing filters in their Leixlip treatment facility, which serves over 600,000 people, were at risk of allowing bacteria and parasites into our water supply.” “Despite this, replacing the filters began only in July 2019 and is expected to take until this
summer to complete. This is why we had to boil our water before drinking it across a period in October and November 2019.” He continued, stating; “The neglect shown here by Irish Water to citizens is alarming. Their failure to act on what they knew five years ago could have led to people ingesting water not fit for human consumption. They refused to lift a finger until it was too late.” “Irish Water has always struggled with its public image, and this failure is just another reason why.” Gardiner concluded.

BILL TO STOP PENSION AGE INCREASE TO 67 YEARS Local Dublin Mid-West T.D. Mark Ward has said that his party’s Bill to stop upcoming pension age increases will be debated in the Dáil in the coming weeks. Deputy Ward said: “The plan to increase the pension age to 67 years in January 2021 and further to 68 years in 2028 meaning that today’s
workers and especially those approaching retirement may not access their State Pension at 66 years, as is the situation currently. These increases will see Ireland have one of the highest pension ages in the world. “At the moment those obliged by contract
ANGER AS VULTURE FUND BUYS WHOLE ESTATE IN LUCAN People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny expressed anger over the decision by Cairn Homes to sell a whole estate in Lucan to a vulture, or cuckoo, fund. It was revealed recently that a so called vulture fund is buying 229 homes in Shackleton Park in Lucan. The special purpose vehicle is owned by the Wall Street finance giant Angelo Gordon. Gino Kenny commented: “This move is yet another step in the wrong direction for the housing market in the area. The wholesale purchasing of estates by vulture funds is skewing
the market against families who are looking to buy a home in the area. The rents charged by the fund will more than likely be well above what most families can afford and those moving in will more than likely rely on HAP payments to subsidise the rent. “Rents in Lucan are well above the national average and we need the government to provide funding for social housing and real affordable homes. What we don’t need is more vulture funds charging extortionate rents and paying pittance in taxes.”

“Our Bill calling on the Government to establish a Pension Age Task Force
would look at pension age and make recommendations based on evidence rather than cost saving measures. This Bill will be debated in the Dáil in the coming weeks. “Nobody due to retire should be forced on to a jobseekers payment. I hope that all parties and none will support this Sinn Féin Bill.”

NEW THREE-YEAR CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE’S PLAN FOR SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY
South Dublin Children and Young People’s Services Committee (CYPSC) has launched their three-year Children and Young People’s Plan. The new plan was officially launched by the Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone T.D. at an event in the Russell Centre in Tallaght.
Tallaght, in the heart of my own Constituency. “I wish to acknowledge the commitment of this CYPSC and the collaborative effort with all the local partners across the County who were involved in producing this plan.
The South Dublin CYPSC includes members from Tusla, South Dublin Country Council, An Garda Síochána, the HSE, Foróige, Jigsaw and Barnardos, amongst other local organisations. In developing this plan, South Dublin CYPSC carried out an audit of services available to children, young people and families in the South Dublin County area, and a consultation process was also undertaken with various stakeholders. The strategic three-year plan aims to improve the outcomes for children and young people.
I am very impressed with the diversity and creativity of all the work being undertaken by South Dublin CYPSC and indeed the CYPSC family around the country. “South Dublin CYPSC was one of the first CYPSC to be established in 2007 and has been working tirelessly in this community working with local organisations and partners in delivering for children and young people. “It is an excellent plan moving this CYPSC towards a more strategic approach to planning and co-ordination. It is comprehensive, coherent, detailed and well thought through and I know a huge amount of work has gone into it.
Speaking about the launch of the new plan, Katherine Zappone T.D, Minister for Children & Youth Affairs said, “I am delighted to have launched the new South Dublin CYPSC Children and Young People’s three-year plan here in
“There are emerging issues that need to be addressed as identified in the plan and I have every confidence that South Dublin CYPSC will rise to this challenge, and I fully support all involved in their efforts in implementing the plan.“ Evidence and
information was also collected from a range of sources including sociodemographic statistics and service mapping. Despite a high number of services and resources in the South Dublin area, CYPSC consultations noted a number of gaps in service provision including: addiction services for under 18s, mental health services for young people, education and employment supports for lone parents, early school leavers and minority groups, and the need to respond to the impact of homelessness on children and young people.
South Dublin County has the fourth-highest population in the country and is home to over ninety-eight thousand children and young people. The area is characterised by wide ranging contrasts of poverty and affluence. In 2016, a total of 52,946 individuals lived in Small Areas of Population classified as being ‘disadvantaged’, ‘very disadvantaged ‘or ‘extremely disadvantaged’, and this accounts for 19% of the total population of South Dublin County. 25% (or 20,549) were aged under 24 years. It is the vision of the South Dublin
O’CONNOR MAKES CALL ON OPEN SPACES Local Councillor, Charlie O’Connor, has again called on the Council to ensure that adequate resources are made available to deal with damage to Open Spaces in our Estates following the Bonfire Season. He again raised the matter at the January meeting of the County Council and initiated a discussion to which most members of the Council contributed. Charlie O’Connor was presented with the following report from the County Manager: “All available resources have been deployed to remove bonfire materials prior to this Halloween, crews have been assigned to this task as necessary during normal working hours but also at weekends and on the run up to October 31st itself. Early contact was made with the Gardai to ensure that information was exchanged between SDCC and AGS and that assistance was provided as necessary in the effort to locate and remove the threat associated with bonfires and the storage of bonfire materials. The number of bonfires
recorded in 2019 is 226, which is down from the number recorded in 2018. A total of 585 tonnes of waste has been collected this year and 237 tonnes of that was captured pre Halloween and before it was set on fire. The total cost to date stands at €102,566 and this is expected to rise to around €150,000 when all costs have been included. Reinstatement of bonfire sites will not take place until the Spring, when ground conditions will have improved.” According to Charlie O’Connor this remains an important issue in many areas and he confirmed that he continues to receive many calls in respect of the matter. He added that other colleagues had similar stories and he said that he pointed out to Council Management that the Council must find new ways of getting a positive message across to communities in respect of Bonfire Season activities. He also undertook to continue to represent these concerns being regularly brought to his attention.
CYPSC that through working together in partnership they can achieve better outcomes for children and young people in South Dublin County, with a focus on early intervention
and prevention, particularly within areas of disadvantage. In order to achieve this South Dublin CYPSC will aim to consolidate and build upon the positive work to date
and cultivate leadership through ‘joined up working’ and ‘joined up thinking’ both locally and nationally. The Plan can be viewed at www.cypsc.ie.

LAURALYNN CHILDREN’S HOSPICE THANKS DONORS AND SPONSORS Recently LauraLynn Children’s Hospice launched a campaign to thank the everyday heroes who helped Ireland’s only dedicated children’s hospice to deliver essential services to children with lifelimiting conditions and their families throughout Ireland in 2019. In 2019, over €4m of LauraLynn’s annual running costs were met via fundraised income from a huge variety of donors and supporters. The charity receives no dedicated government funding.
LauraLynn CEO, Orla O’Brien said; “It is fantastic that throughout the year so many people partake in fundraising events, from running the mini-marathon to holding cake sales and raffles, to ensure we can meet the cost of providing healthcare support and palliative care services to children with life-limiting conditions and their families. We begin this year with a fundraising target of €4.6 million which is required to provide care to even more children with life-limiting conditions and their families when they
need it the most. We know it is a huge undertaking by our LauraLynn families, supporters, donors, volunteers and employees to fundraise on our behalf every year and I want them to know that their efforts are making a real difference to many, many families throughout the country”.
donation, big or small, has made to Sam and to our lives. Some days can seem hopeless, some days can be good and then there are LauraLynn days. Then we know there is hope” For more information see www.lauralynn.ie.
Did you know you can raise funds for LauraLynn with Newsgroup? Newsgroup is delighted to support Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice with the help of our readers. We ask readers who wish to place a Novena in our newspapers, to make a donation to Laura Lynn
and have done so since 2015. In 3 simple steps, 1. Pick your novena and place your initials on the prayer. 2. Make a cheque or postal order out to LauraLynn for a minimum donation of €10 per prayer. And 3. Post your Novena and cheque / postal order to our office.
Since opening in September 2011, LauraLynn Ireland’s Children’s Hospice has provided specialised hospice care to more than 420 children and their families. LauraLynn provides holistic care to each child which enables them to make the most of every day. This care also extends to the family of each child who are often dealing with difficult emotional, physical and financial pressures. Sam is an 11 year old boy, he has a rare genetic condition causing a range of symptoms that result in him needing round the clock care. Sam is one of almost 170 children availing of LauraLynn and has attended the service for four years. Sam’s mum Therese says; “I don’t know if you will ever understand just what a difference your

EDUCATION FEATURE
Professional Development Courses At PCI College
Back in 1991 our pioneering co-founders Liam McCarthy (RIP) and Josephine Murphy, identifying a real need for supportive and inclusive training, founded the Personal Counselling Institute (now known as PCI College).
Our programmes are characterised by an integrative, person-centred, approach to counselling & psychotherapy training. Through their extensive training, students are introduced to all the main theorists, as well as being afforded the opportunity to delve into important topics such as Abnormal Psychology, Loss & Grief, and Substance Addiction, to name but a few. This expansive breadth of training, in conjunction with the provision of high quality, userfriendly teaching, is one of the key factors that each year continues to attract many students to join the growing PCI College family of qualified counsellors and psychotherapists. With over 25 years of experience, PCI College continue with our founders pioneering work by embracing the continued raising of academic standards in the context of proposed professional regulation, while still making training as accessible as possible; by continuing to set a high standard of personal development in training; by raising awareness around the huge range of issues that people still struggle
within this country - depression, anxiety, suicide, addictions, relationship difficulties, etc; and by promoting an integrative approach within our field, and with our fellow professionals.
PCI College is a leading provider of third-level educational and continuing professional development courses in the fields of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and Personal & Professional Development in mental health and wellbeing. As a college, it is committed to the provision of expert training and education in the field of mental health and wellbeing, in the private education sector, and tailor-made training to specialist groups. About Certificate in Counselling & Psychotherapy This comprehensive and rewarding course offers you both a stimulating learning experience and an enjoyable introduction to the world of counselling and psychotherapy. The four distinct course modules follow a natural progression from personal development and theoretical approaches to the skills practice and an overview of counselling and psychotherapy as a profession. You can expect a mix of traditional classroom-style and more handson experiential learning, with the opportunity to forge real and often lasting connections with your colleagues. Our classes typically include students
from a wide range of ages and backgrounds, offering opportunities for rich interpersonal sharing and learning. Indeed, in keeping with the ethos of counselling and psychotherapy, each student’s individual story is respected, and their unique talents encouraged throughout the course.
This course is for those who wish to learn more about both the inner workings of counselling and psychotherapy and themselves as individuals. It will also appeal to those who intend to pursue a career in the field and become an IACP accredited professional or who wish to incorporate counselling knowledge and skills into their current personal/ professional lives. The course aims to be both intellectually stimulating and useful. The skills and knowledge acquired may be effectively applied to any number of ‘real life’ situations and professions. These skills may include increased self-awareness and empathy, improved communication and listening abilities, and a range of counselling tools that can enhance interpersonal relationships. Students wishing to pursue a career in the field will also be provided with the essential foundational elements needed as part of enrolment for a further qualification, such as our BSc Honours Degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

BCFE FANTASTIC FURTHER EDUCATION COURSES - YOUR TIME TO CHOOSE
“NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE YOUR CAO DECISIONS” It’s fair to say that our educational system places an amount of pressure on our youth. Leaving Cert students are encouraged to make a list of courses they wish to pursue, leading them into their future career. Pending their Leaving Cert results. Imagine the pressure! Choosing your number 1 Level 7 or Level 8 course is the first tough part but my advice is to know everything about the college that you can find out by digging through their website, watching video testimonials or talking to someone studying there. Ask yourself, is this for me? Taking this decision seriously is important as you don’t want to become another statistic of people who’ve dropped out of college in the first 6 weeks because the course isn’t for you. Choose a course that plays to your skills and talents. If you can’t get enough of movies and directors choose Film and TV or media studies. In the new era of technology, artificial intelligence and data analytics Computer Science is now a popular choice. Griffith College offers a level 7 and a level 8 Computer Science degree, with work placement options and exposure to a wide range of highly qualified lecturers. The second tough part is preference. Choosing one course over another. If you’re confused here, look at the module descriptor of the course and see what modules you would enjoy studying. The third tough part is sitting the exams, but once your CAO application is completed and submitted you’ll feel more confident heading into the exams! Do you have CAO questions? Join Griffith College’s Sinead O’Callaghan and Computing student Chloe O’Loughlin on Monday 20 January at 7pm at Griffith’s Facebook and Instagram page where they will be live streaming a Q&A.

out’, ‘Nurture your Mind’; and then created illustrations to represent each of these concepts visually. First year students Susan Sweeney won the highly prestigious Future Illustrator 2019, a partnership between OFFSET, The Irish Examiner and Chemistry to give budding illustrators a chance to get their work seen at OFFSET and published in a national newspaper. Entrants had to develop an illustration which could be used as part of an editorial feature in the Irish Examiner. The feature was about Brexit.
For students who have just received their Leaving Certificate results and for adults thinking about returning to education BCFE offers a real choice – fantastic courses which lead directly to work or which are the foundation for further study and creative development in BCFE or in another college. Choose graphic design, animation, music, work with children or television Begin your journey in BCFE.
A great job this time next year Level 5 courses can lead to an interesting and fulfilling job in just one year. BCFE’s Early Childhood Care and Education course has an outstanding record of success. Students regularly go straight into employment at the end of course. According to Bernadette Keegan, Head of Childcare in BCFE, “the course is ideal for anyone who is interested in working with children. It is a good mix of theory and practice. Students learn about child development, well-being and the importance of play. The sector is growing and becoming increasingly professionalized. The level 5 course is the entry level for work in the sector and it is also the foundation for further study and professional development in the future.”
Art and Design – creative, technological and award-winning If Art is your choice BCFE invites you to a place of creativity, hard-work, fun, ideas, design and artmaking where you can explore your creativity. The art department has excellent resources: art studios, a darkroom and state-ofthe-art Mac Room. Most importantly, as Brian Walsh, Head of Art, Design and Three Dimensional Studies explains, “Art in BCFE offers all the challenges and excitement of Art College in a supportive learning environment with small classes. We are committed to nurturing the creative and artistic development of our students. Students have the opportunity to develop strong dynamic portfolios based on their personal interests.” Graphic Design is a two year professionally-focussed course which enables students to develop industry-standard portfolios across a range of design specialisms. This highly regarded courses regularly produces award-winning students and graduates. Recent award winners include second year students, Helen O’Higgins and Chiara Tallarini, who won the Childline Campaign category in the ‘New Now’ YCN design competition 2019. Helen and Chiara produced a series of illustrations whose aim was to brighten up the mood of teenagers. They came up with a series of positive tag lines such as ‘Be Active’, ‘Reach
Other course in Social Care, such as Care of the Person with Special Needs leads to a dual qualification and work as a Health Care Assistant or a Special Needs Assistant and the Community and Health Services course similarly lead to employment or to further study. Business and Travel and Tourism are also excellent career choices. According to Diane McGill, Business Coordinator, “Business is a great area to study. Our two year course is an excellent foundation for further study and many of our students progress to Business degree programmes in IT Tallaght. The course, as a general Business course, opens up avenues within all areas of business. Graduates of business from BCFE can start careers in accounts, HR, sales and marketing and management.” Students from the Business and Travel & Tourism travel abroad for work experience in Finland, Malta and Portugal supported by Erasmus+. Music: Contemporary & Traditional, Performance, Production & Management Long establishing pioneering courses, Contemporary
Music Performance (Rock School) and Traditional Music (Ceoltóir) continue to provide cutting-edge creative education providing an environment where musicians and singers can develop their composition and performance skills. Ceoltóir introduced a new Instrument Making strand in 2018 in response to the skills shortage within the traditional music community in terms of instrument making. Performance is at the heart of both courses and students regularly perform in college and city centre venues. Music Production is a high level technical course involving the operation of modern sound equipment and music technology. Successful students can expect to find employment in the media, entertainment and music industries as sound engineers, music producers, editors, midi production programmers, technicians, and proaudio sales. Management students specialize in the business side, learning all aspects of staging events, managing artists, negotiating with venues and promoters. Students from all courses collaborate to produce BCFEST, a day long music festival in BCFE in December, a highlight of the first term for all students. Media, Film, Animation, Computer Games & More BCFE has great courses in Media, Film, Television, Radio, Animation, Social Care, Business, Media and Television departments. All courses are open to Leaving Certificate students and to mature applicants. Cecilia Munro, principal of BCFE, says “BCFE has an excellent reputation of providing quality first choice courses which prepare students for employment or further or higher education progression within their chosen career area. Students are educated and trained by highly qualified staff who have relevant industry experience. Class sizes are small and students are supported through their educational journey in BCFE with specific guidance, learning, pastrol care and ICT supports. Graduates of BCFE are highly sought after by employers both nationally and internationally. Students attending BCFE can uniquely avail of courses from level 4 to level 8 all of which are fully quality assured and recognised on the National Framework of Qualifications.” See www.bcfe.ie for more information

MOTORING LIFE
WITH
NEW RANGE ROVER EVOQUE – ABOVE & BEYOND By Breda Corrigan The Range Rover Evoque transformed the Land Rover range when it first launched in 2011, and now the dynamic SUV has undergone a breathtaking redesign to include a refreshed exterior, and superior levels of capability. The stylish Evoque has won the hearts of drivers across the world thanks to its unique blend of luxurious design and off-road capability. Careful to retain its distinctive character, the New Range Rover Evoque holds its eye-catching shape and proportions, but sees the introduction of a striking reductive design language embodied by a more streamlined silhouette and attractive clean lines along the body, for a more contemporary and premium feel.
with up to 1,383-litres available when the 40:20:40 rear seat backs are folded. The new architecture has been developed for electrification, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid available now, and a plug-in hybrid model due in 2020. The mild-hybrid powertrain is a first for Land Rover, and works by harvesting energy normally lost during deceleration and storing it in the underfloor battery. At speeds below 17km/h, the engine will shut off while the driver applies the brakes. When pulling away, the stored energy is redeployed to assist the engine under acceleration, thereby reducing fuel consumption in the process.
Sophisticated Evolution;
The new Range Rover Evoque’s dramatic, confident and sophisticated design is in complete harmony with the simplicity of its intuitive technologies, and supreme levels of functionality. Sophistication and space are abundantly apparent in its beautifully appointed interior. Taking inspiration from larger models in the Range Rover line-up, the new Evoque’s cabin majors on quality materials, clean design, and modern infotainment. Overall interior quality has taken a welcome step forward, and is a sumptuous place in which to spend time, while a suite of interior personalisation options allow for supreme individualisation.
Having pioneered the luxury compact SUV market (now with more than 217 international awards), the new Range Rover Evoque is a sophisticated evolution of the original. Combining unrivalled Range Rover heritage with cutting-edge technology, and with prices starting from €42,845, it meets the needs of today’s SUV buyers. Rivals to the new Range Rover Evoque include the Audi Q3, Volvo XC40, Jaguar E-Pace, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and the Lexus NX. More Spacious Than Ever; The new Range Rover Evoque is built on Land Rover’s new ‘Premium Transverse Architecture’, which allows for more interior space than before. A longer wheelbase yields 20mm extra rear kneeroom, while the larger glove box and centre cubby can now fit tablets, handbags and bottles with ease. The luggage space is 10% larger (now 591-litres with the rear seats in place), as well as much wider,
Sumptuous Interior;
Choice of ‘Ingenium’ Engines; From power and sheer driving pleasure, to fuel economy and refinement, there is a range of Ingenium engines available for the new Range Rover Evoque, and each has been optimised for specific attributes to cater for all needs. All engines are equipped with Stop/Start technology and smart regenerative charging for ultimate
fuel economy. A 2.0-litre petrol engine is available in three states of tune – 200, 250 or 300bhp (badged P200, P250 and P300 respectively), with All-WheelDrive (AWD) and a nine-speed automatic gearbox coming as standard. Diesel options consist of a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine with power outputs of 150, 180 or 240bhp (badged D150, D180 and D240 respectively), with AWD and a nine-speed automatic gearbox across the engine range. A six-speed manual gearbox is exclusively available with the D150 model for drivers who prefer a manual transmission. Specification Levels; There are three generously equipped trim levels to choose from – S, SE and rangetopping HSE, with all levels available in standard Range Rover Evoque, or Range Rover Evoque R-Dynamic guises – leading to a choice of 6 models in total. R-Dynamic models bring a sportier look, adding black and burnished copper detailing, plus a body-coloured front bumper. Standard features across the range include stylish split-spoke alloy wheels (from 18” to 20” depending on the model chosen), LED headlamps with auto function, automatic wipers, perforated grained leather seats, 10-way electric front seats, 10” Touch Pro infotainment system with satellite navigation, Android Auto™ & Apple CarPlay™, traffic sign recognition with adaptive speed limiter, approach illuminations, 2-zone climate control with rear air vents, twin sliding front armrests, push button start, reverse camera, front & rear parking aid, lane keep assist, and a driver condition monitor, along with a whole host of additional comfort, convenience, and safety features.
Test Car; My test car was a new Range Rover Evoque D150 ‘S’ AWD Automatic, which was finished in striking Kaikoura Stone metallic paint for maximum impact. The award-winning 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine produces 150bhp, and a healthy 380Nm of torque for swift acceleration. The 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in 11.2-seconds (10.5-seconds in manual guise), and can reach a top speed of 196km/h where legally permitted. Fule consumption as low as 5.6l/100km is possible on a combined driving cycle (NEDC rating), enabling up to 1,160km’s from a full tank (65-litres) of diesel. With closely spaced ratios, the Evoque’s technologically-advanced 9-speed automatic gearbox provides seamless gearchanging ability, while a shift schedule intelligently adapts to the driving style of the driver. On the road, the new Evoque is impressively refined and tackles road imperfections with ease, while its driving dynamics ensure that every journey is testament to the great lengths that Land Rover engineers have gone to in order to ensure supreme driving pleasure. With an approach angle, departure angle, and ramp angle of 22.2, 30.6, and 20.7-degrees respectively, the new Evoque is now more capable than ever off-road too. Verdict; Overall, the new Range Rover Evoque possesses terrific levels of luxury, style, technology, refinement and capability. In 2011, the original Range Rover Evoque set a precedent in the niche compact luxury SUV market, and the new Evoque has certainly gone ‘above and beyond’ in every way.

SEAT CONCLUDES A RECORD 2019 2019 proved to be another exceptional year for the SEAT brand in Ireland. In a market that faced many challenges, SEAT managed to return remarkable performance, with a record market share of 3.5%, up from 2.9% the previous year. SEAT sold 4,120 cars in 2019, and this was an 11.4% increase on 2018. Surpassing 4,000 units is the first time in 19 years this has been achieved and reaching 3.5% is the highest market share in the brands history in Ireland. A significant reason for the excellent
sales success of the brand is down to the ever-growing SEAT SUV range, which grew in 2019 with the arrival of the Tarraco that was recently awarded Irish Large SUV of the Year 2020 at the Continental Irish Car of the Year Awards.
The SUV range accounts for just over 60% of SEAT’s sales in Ireland, and the Arona is now SEAT’s number one car, accounting for 28% of total sales. And while 2020 will see further news on SEAT’s electrification, 2019 remained a year of Diesel and Petrol, with demand
for both split pretty even. Through Volkswagen Financial Services, of all new SEAT cars now purchased on finance, 80% of these finance cases were purchased on PCP, guaranteeing extremely low competitive rates and a minimum future value. In addition, with the increase in the brands product portfolio, there has been a significant increase in the number of fleet and corporate customers seeing the impressive product and value offered by SEAT.
Commenting on the 2019 results, SEAT Ireland Brand Director Niall Phillips said; “We are delighted with the brand’s results in 2019 in what was a challenging year, and it is a credit to our retailers and to our team that we achieved so many milestones last year. And the early signs for 2020 are positive based on current demand with the total market expected to be stronger than 2019. I’d like to thank our customers and retailers for
their custom and business in 2019 and we welcome even more customers to the brand in 2020. The
SEAT retailer network increased in 2019 with the appointment of Aherns SEAT in Kerry and Connolly’s SEAT
in Sligo and these strong appointments will make sure that 2020 remains a strong year for the brand.
The car market is always abuzz at this time of year and the showrooms at Airton Ford on Airton Road in Tallaght reflect that this week as they host their 201 Test Drive event. There are deals across the range but foremost among the offers is the 2020 Fiesta Trend Connected.

An astonishing 20,000 Votes were cast across Ireland throughout the month of December following a call by the Bank for the public to get involved. Jack & Jill Foundation emerged as the
Dublin partner and one of five winners. Announcing the five winners, Courtnee Kyle, Corporate Social Responsibility & Communications Manager, Permanent TSB, said, “20,000 votes is an incredible number and far exceeded our expectations. I would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote from every corner of
the Country. The Permanent TSB Community Fund will support local communities by providing funding to community organisations that are having a positive and meaningful impact on the ground and who are working hard to make a difference. It will operate in each of our five regions across Ireland and provide €100,000 in funding to five local charities. As
part of Permanent TSB’s commitment to Responsible Business, we are focused on supporting our communities by having a positive and meaningful impact. The Permanent TSB Community Fund will play a key role in the delivery of that ambition.” Ms Kyle continued, “The

NEW CLONDALKIN COUNCILLOR APPOINTED
Sinn Féin have co-opted Lisa Colman into the vacant council seat of by-election winner Mark Ward TD. Speaking at her first council meeting with South Dublin CoCo, Cllr Colman said; “I am hugely honoured and humbled to be selected to be co-opted as a Sinn Fein County Councillor for the North Clondalkin/Palmerstown/Lucan LEA.
“Taking on this role will be extremely challenging, considering this particular Sinn Féin seat has been held by both Deputies Mark Ward and Eoin Ó Broin in the past. It is no coincidence that they both are now TDs as they were the hardest working Councillors in the Clondalkin/Lucan area. “Replacing Mark will be difficult. He topped the poll in the local elections and then was a poll topper in the recent byelection. All the spin in the world by other candidates cannot replace on the ground
hard work for communities. “Housing is hugely important to me. I am the vice chair of co-operative housing Ireland’s South County board. I work tirelessly to keep rents at an affordable price for all member tenants. “For the people who are not lucky enough to have a home, I set up the Clondalkin Weekend Soup Run almost a year and a half ago. In that time, I have been out every single weekend and bank holiday Mondays bringing people essentials they may need. “I, along with my Sinn Féin colleagues, will work to give families and workers a break. We will continue to be the voice of opposition to the ruling group of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Green Party and some independents. “I am up for this challenge and look forward to working alongside my Sinn Fein Comrades on South Dublin County Council.”
