CLONDALKIN COMING TOGETHER DURING COVID

TD for Dublin Mid-West Mark Ward has welcomed a new local initiative that will see front line staff and vulnerable members of the community receive free meals. Deputy Ward has teamed up with local football club Collinstown FC and a local business, The Prep Master and the defence force veterans to provide meals to front line staff in Stewarts Care Centre in Palmerstown and to vulnerable people across Clondalkin.

Deputy Ward said; “These are extremely tough and challenging times for everyone but to front line health staff and vulnerable families. I wanted to see if we could assist people and

contacted the local football club Collinstown FC to get involved. “ “We had a couple of different suggestions but finally settled on providing meals to front line health staff and to the more vulnerable members of our communities. Collinstown got one of their club sponsors, The Prep Master to become involved “ “We decided to support one of our local services, Stewarts Health Care in Palmerstown and provide them with meals for their front-line staff who have been working around the clock during this emergency”

with Stewarts Health Care and we are no providing meals daily. This is our community’s way of saying thank you to the front-line staff who are modern day heroes” “Additionally, we teamed up with the local Defence Force Veterans who have been delivering prescriptions to people who are cocooning or selfisolating at this time. They agreed to separately deliver meals to some of the more vulnerablemembers of our community” “This is prime example of communities coming together during COVID”

PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT CALL FOR HAZARD PAY FOR ALL FRONTLINE COUNCIL STAFF Council staff across Local Authorities in Ireland are working tirelessly to ensure essential services keep working and that no one gets left behind during this crisis. People Before Profit Cllr Madeleine Johansson, and Gino Kenny TD, have called for hazard pay for South Dublin County Council staff on the frontline. Madeleine Johansson said: “Council workers are doing the

bravest thing any worker can do during this crisis. They should be rewarded with hazard pay for keeping essential services running when we need them most. Moreover, we in People Before Profit believe that council staff, be they cleansing, housing, refuse workers and others, should be designated as essential, even after this crisis is over, and paid a wage they deserve.’

Gino Kenny commented: “People Before Profit, both North and South, are jointly making this call to ensure frontline staff are rewarded and properly valued. “Central government must immediately financially assist local councils to cover lost revenue in order to maintain all essential services and to pay council workers real living wages.”

YOUNG GIRL CREATES POSITIVITY ROCKS IN RATHCOOLE TO SPREAD POSITIVIY, KINDNESS AND COLOUR!

Jodi, a 12 year girl from Rathcoole is spreading positivity, kindness and colour throughout the village of Rathcoole. A fantastic idea of painting rocks containing messages of kindness, positive notes and overall aim to make people smile in an uncertain time. Jodi’s Mum Emma commented “My 12 year old Jodi and I have spent the last few day painting positivity rocks for our community! We put them all around Rathcoole.

friends! They could paint a rock, leave it outside their house or in their garden, or at their wall. Share positivity, kindness & colour.” Jodi’s idea extended to “Maybe they could make one for the park, to leave outside the GPS, maybe at the hospital if your near, to give our frontliners something to smile at as they come and go from work. To share positivity, kindness & colour.” Emma

continued “We would like to invite you to get involved. To encourage you to paint your own rocks. To create your own messages of positivity, kindness & colour to brighten up our communities and the paths of these whom you love & places that bring you joy” Children have already started getting involved, they are doing rock hunts, creating rocks of their own and putting them in their communities.

The aim is to spread positivity, kindness and colour to those out doing their ‘one walk a day’. A facebook page was set up and you can follow the story with Jodi - facebook.com/ jts.positivityrocks.9 Jodi and Emma would love if this concept was used in other villages and towns across the country. “We were thinking it would be really lovely to get other kids in other communities involved. Maybe they are missing their grandparents and can’t visit them. Maybe they are missing their school

CLONDALKIN HELPING HOMELESS & THOSE IN NEED

Clondalkin Helping Homeless and those in Need (CHH) continues to deliver food to families in need at this time of crisis. Clondalkin Helping Homeless started in 2014 and has grown over the years. Currently over 100 local families are getting assistance from Clondalkin Helping Homeless.

Pandemic has increased the demand on our service by 50%. We are delighted that the South Dublin County Partnership and Quarryvale Family Resource centre have come on board with us to enable us to meet the increased needs during Covid-19. We also want to thank everyone in the community that has donated food items.

In particular Oakfield Trust, John Moody and his Family and Friends, the Liffey Valley Vineyard Church, Crosscare Foodbank, Local Schools food support and Tesco FoodCloud who have all been very generous in giving large donations. Hanley’s SuperValu Rowlagh have been incredibly helpful as they are the only shop that currently allows us to buy in bulk”. Cllr

Timmons commented “A huge debt of gratitude goes out to our volunteers who have been driving around at their own expense and ensuring that local families in need continue to get necessary supplies during this Pandemic. Also to members of the Clondalkin Child and Family Support Network who have not only helped our volunteers with the collection and distribution of food but have also helped us secure additional

REFLECTIONS ON RESILIENCE

Our lives have changed in hitherto unexpected ways in recent times. As a society, as families and as individuals, we have had to draw upon our own wellsprings of resilience as old certainties are tested and new challenges emerge.

At the National Museum of Ireland we have asked our team to reflect on our current shared resilience in the face of this challenge, and examined our national collection through this lens. Human resilience is as old as history itself, and in examining the theme we have

selected a range of objects and specimens – some well-known, many less so and many not on display but from our reserve collections. These objects tell their own stories of resilience, endurance and hope, and we hope they provide a moment for reflection in these challenging times. DEBENHAMS IRELAND APPROACH ‘CALLOUS AND APPALLING

Local TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has described the treatment Debenhams Ireland workers, many of whom have spent decades with the company, as “callous, unfeeling, and appalling” after the news of the company’s liquidation was announced in the media and by email to workers. Debenhams in the Square Shopping Centre in Tallaght and other Stores have closed with immediate effect Teachta Crowe said: “As we have seen with the Clerys

workers who were left in the lurch by a private equity vulture fund, Ireland is failing to protect our workers against businesses in Ireland. “Irish workers of Debenhams have served the company well. One constituent who contacted me had worked for the firm since it came to Dublin almost 25 years ago.

To say that they have been treated shabbily is an understatement. An announcement in the media and a generic email to hundreds of

employees directing them to the Citizens Information website to claim state redundancy payments is a callous, unfeeling, and appalling way to reward such long service.

“To close your doors in the midst of a pandemic is to be expected. To use it as a lame excuse to lay off hundreds of workers and to provide no redundancy or support is not. No worker should be treated this way. “Sinn Féin contacted Minister Heather Humphreys about this situation, and we have

followed up, and we’ve also been in touch with the General Secretary of Mandate Trade Union, John Douglas. “It’s imperative the government make clear if they had foresight of this

decision through the state’s stake in Bank of Ireland which makes up part of the ownership structure of Debenhams Ireland, and outline what supports they will put in place immediately for workers who have been made

THE ELF ON THE SHELF 5K

Tallaght man Stephen Martin is back fundraising for Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland (SBHI). In recent years, Stephen has organised events and fundraising initiatives and encouraged runners, families and children to get involved. In 2019 he organised a challenge dubbed ‘I Am The 1 in 10’, the challenge was a part of ‘Marathon Man to Ironman’, a fundraising initiative established by Martin as a platform to raise vital funds for charity partner, Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland (SBHI).

The fitness venture saw Martin’s annual Family Fun Run in Corkagh Park gather over 200 participants while raising €1,649 for Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland (SBHI). Day 10, the final day of the ‘I Am The 1

NATIONAL BANANA DAY Families throughout Ireland were invited to ‘go bananas’ all in the cause of healthy eating in a campaign that marked National Banana Day on April 15th according to its promoters, fruit importers Fyffes. In its fourth year, the initiative is seen by the company as a reminder to shoppers to ‘think bananas’ when it comes to choosing a natural and nutritious convenience food or meal accompaniment whilst being a creative way of relieving ‘lockdown fatigue’ by giving support to the serious purpose of encouraging wholesome eating habits, especially amongst young and growing

children. Restricted to online activities, the activities planned invited mums, dads and little ones to compete in a fun-filled series of ‘banana-bingo’ word challenges. Also featured on their facebook page was a tasty range of banana-infused recipes that stayat-home parents and children can enjoy making, including a selection of lip-licking deserts and savoury creations for which bananas are the principal ingredient. Fyffes marketing manager, Emma Hunt-Duffy said: “Besides raising awareness of the health benefits of bananas, our goal is to highlight what a fun and versatile fruit it is”.

redundant. “It’s extremely stressful and worrying to be made redundant at any stage, but now during a global pandemic makes this all the more difficult for the 1,500 directly employed and 500 concession staff across the state.”

in 10’ challenge, saw Martin battle the last lap of this extraordinary challenge in Corkagh Park. Family, friends and people of all ages and abilities travelled to the event to join Stephen in this awe-inspiring accomplishment. On the 29th of November the The Elf on the Shelf 5k will take place in Corkagh Park, Clondalkin. They’ll have medals for everyone who joins with goodie bags for all the kids and a visit from the big man. All funds raised on the day go to will go to Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland. Dumping Initiative will be ring-fenced to support efforts to tackle a reported increase in illegal dumping during the current Covid 19 crisis. Waste removal and the installation of CCTV or other monitoring and surveillance equipment will be among the activities supported. “There has been a noticeable increase in reports of illegal dumping during the Covid crisis. Providing local authorities with advance funding we will ensure that they can respond quickly and decisively” said Higgins.

Since the introduction of the Anti-Dumping Initiative in 2017, funding of €6.3 million has been provided which has supported over 700 projects across all 31 local authorities and removed 10,000 tonnes of illegally dumped waste. This is in addition to the €7.4m annual enforcement grant, which supports the

ENERGY GUAGE By Brónagh Lyons

I used to feel so out of control when it came to my energy It was like my energy was fluid and once I entered a room, situation, conversation it was vulnerable for anyone to drag or pull it in any direction If I was in a great mood and I walked into a room with someone who was in a terrible mood, my energy would instantly drop, and I felt defenceless I really didn’t know what to do or how to stop it from happening and it legit scared me A couple years ago I created a tool where you list all of the activities or things that raise your vibration. This list is your energy gauge. Once you have all of your high vibe, feel good favourites down on paper, every time you are feeling low-energy or can feel your energy slipping you can use this list to top your energy up. I started using this and found I could recoup my energy so much quicker!

be strongly advocating that South Dublin County Council receives an adequate portion of this funding

to tackle illegal dumping in Lucan, Palmerstown, Clondalkin and our smaller villages” concluded Higgins

NEW APPLICATION FOR 250 BUILD-TO-RENT APARTMENTS IN PALMERSTOWN VILLAGE A new Strategic Housing Development planning application has been lodged with An Bord Pleanala for the site locally known as the Vincent Byrne site in Palmerstown Village, just beside the N4. Permission was previously refused on this site when the application was deemed to be inappropriate for the village setting. The new application by developer Randalswood Ltd consists of 250 buildto-rent 1- and 2-bed apartments with 125 parking spaces, a café, gym and cinema room. People Before Profit councillor Madeleine Johansson commented: “The new plans for this site has a reduced number of apartments but there are still major issues of concern. The scale of this development is still too big for the village setting with one of the blocks being 8 stories,

well above the limit of 3 stories which is outlined in the Development Plan. I also have concerns in relation to private outdoor space which in many units is well below the minimum guidelines.” Gino Kenny TD added: “I have serious concerns about ‘build-to-rent’ developments where developers are looking to charge extortionate rents to make big profits, without any regards for the local community. Residents will have at least 5 weeks to make submissions to the application and I would urge people to do so. I am concerned about developers using the current public health crisis to try to keep these kind of applications under the radar because communities are not able to organise themselves as they normally would.”

HEALTH OF CONSTRUCTION WORKERS MUST BE A PRIORITY WHEN SITES REOPEN Eoin Ó Broin TD has called for the government to outline what checks and protections are to be put in place to guarantee the health and safety of construction workers once sites are given the okay to reopen. Deputy Ó Broin said: “Before any building sites reopen the government must outline what protections will be introduced to protect the health and safety of construction workers. “It is Sinn Féin’s strong view that a number of measures must be put in place before these sites reopen. “A contractor must submit a written Covid19 safety statement to the Local Authority before construction work commences setting out how social distancing and other public health measures to protect workers will be ensured on site. “The safety statement details of how workers -

including sub-contractors - will travel to and from the site with due regard for Covid regulations.

to be put in place as workers return to the workplace to guarantee their health and safety.

“No construction site should reopen without an adequate supply of personal protective equipment and a confidential phone line should be provided for construction workers who want to report non-compliance with public health advice but are nervous of doing so for loss of employment “Any contractor who is found to be in breach of the HSE’s public health advice should have their site shut down by the Local Authority.

“In particular ICTU’s call that this protocol should not be voluntarily and should be mandatory has our full support. “The health and safety of workers must be a priority. Before the construction sites were shut due to the government restrictions our office received daily correspondence from workers on sites that did not adhere to social distancing and hygiene rules.

“We called for this last week when some social housing sites re-opened and we believe the same rules should apply for every site. “The trade union movement has been active on this and we support ICTUs calls for a protocol

“The government must now make it clear what its plan is in terms of the re-opening of both construction sites and the broader economy. We have yet to see what measures will be out in place to guarantee workers safety and this must be done before the restrictions are lifted.”

75% OF IRISH PEOPLE SUPPORT EU TRADE DEALS, POINTING THE WAY TO RECOVERY

MEP for Dublin, Barry Andrews, has welcomed the findings of the annual European Movement survey on sentiment in Ireland. MEP Andrews said that any attempt to nationalise supply chains and particularly the manufacture of medical components and pharmaceutical supplies will result in additional unnecessary costs. “I am strongly of the view that trade will help in the recovery particularly for an open trading economy like Ireland but that we have a unique opportunity to craft new sustainable trade rules that fit with the Green Deal priorities.” “Undoubtedly, the fall in support for membership should be a wake-up call for the EU Council in formulating a

comprehensive Recovery and Reconstruction plan and an ambitious Multi-annual Financial Framework. “However, we need to fight against protectionist measures which are popular at home but ultimately self-defeating. Today’s survey results will provide encouragement for future ambitious trade deals. The WTO’s worst case scenario suggests a 32% drop in international trade.” “Trade entered the crisis in a weakened state because of US policy, challenges to the WTO and challenges to globalisation. The impact of falling trade together with falling commodity prices and falling remittances will be even greater for emerging economies,” concluded MEP Andrews.

CHILDREN MORE INTERESTED IN TAKING PHYSICAL EXERCISE THAN MANY COVID 19 CLEANING ADULTS MIGHT THINK’ DOOR HANDLES Surprising as it may be to some, it would appear that children of primary school age and older have a significantly deeper interest in taking physical exercise than many adults might realise.

That is a belief shared by banana importers Fyffes who, because of Covid-19 school closure regulations, have taken their ‘Fit Squad’ programme of school fitness

visits off-road and moved it online so those of schoolgoing age can maintain an exercise regime – especially at the present time.

Within the first week of ‘going live’ online, on Fyffes Facebook.com/ FyffesIreland, YouTube @ FreddyFyffesIreland and Instagram @fyffes_ireland channels, viewer statistics show that more than 73,000 people have tuned in to

take part in the various exercise routines.

Hosted by Irish fitness expert Tom Dalton, programmes are presented in a series of short interactive videos that can also be viewed on a dedicated website created for the programme (www. fyffesfitsquad.ie) – included also are the chances for viewers to win daily spot prizes. Conceived as a means of introducing young

people to the importance of physical exercise, the programme has the additional aim of combating the risk of overweight and obesity by emphasising the importance of healthy eating.

Said by Fyffes marketing manager, Emma HuntDuffy to be ‘an energetic and enjoyable antidote to lockdown fatigue’, the positive response it has received, live and online, “proves that its message is one being enjoyed by parents and children alike”. Before going on-line, the ‘Fit Squad’ programme – which has attracted a number of awards – had been enjoyed by over 17,000 children participating in the interactive sessions during 345 individual school visits held across 29 counties, north and south, since its inception in 2018. “With all indications pointing to the fact that ‘Fit Squad’ is achieving its goal, and with hundreds of applications in the pipeline from schools awaiting individual visits, it is clear that – when current restrictions are lifted – the programme will have a very worthwhile future, in both live and on-line mediums,” Ms. Hunt-Duffy added.

WRONG DIRECTIONS CAUSING FEAR AND CONFUSION AT A CLONDALKIN COVID CENTRE

Google maps is directing people accessing an assessment centre for COVID 19 at Steeple House in Clondalkin through a residential estate instead of directly to the centre.

This is causing confusion for the clients accessing the centre andhealth concerns for residents in nearby Thornfield Square. Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Mid-West Mark Ward has called on the HSE and the Minister for Health to immediately resolve this problem Deputy Ward said; “Steeple House in Clondalkin is being used as an assessment centre for clients who have been diagnosed with COVID 19. The idea is that this facility will take some of the burden of the hospital services.” “Whilst I welcome

this initiative by the HSE, I have received a number of calls from residents of nearby Thornfield Square last week who had concerns about clients of the COVID 19 assessment centre at Steeple House going through their estate. I have received reports of clients of the test centre being lost in the estateand calling into people’s homes asking for directions” “This is unacceptable for the residents and also for the clients themselves” “Residents also report that one client of the centre became very ill and an ambulance had to be called to Thornfield Square, This estate is made up of a lot of young families, some of who have contacted me stating that they have under lying health issues

This is causing confusion and added stress to people who have already being diagnosed with COVID 19 and creating fear amongst the residents of Thornfield Square” “The residents I spoke with have no objection to Steeple House being used as an assessment centre.

They just want to maintain social distancing and keep themselves and their families safe during these challenging times”

I am calling on the HSE and the Minister to work together and resolve this problem and that common

sense prevails so that clients who have tested positive with COVID 19 are directed to the service they need and not sent through a residential estate”

“I have also raised concerns about the car parking facilities at Steeple House. It is my understanding that clients are being asked to park outside the INTREO offices but there are two yellow lines on this road and whilst Car parking was discussed with the Clondalkin Community Garda Sergeant who advised that patients should park/ wait in the set-down area outside the main entrance or on the road inside the main gate this will only add to the confusion.” “I am also disappointed that the Health Service Executive is not permitted to use the car park owned by South Dublin County Council as this would alleviate the problem” “I have also contacted Minister Simon Harris and to date have not

€10 MILLION FUND FOR TECHNOLOGY FOR DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS

A €10 million fund has been set up to provide technology and devices for disadvantaged students at primary and secondary level, a Fine Gael deputy has said.

a priority on Leaving Certificate students. Combined with an emphasis on wellbeing, this funding will help to give students the tools they need to succeed.”

Deputy Emer Higgins said the funding will be a huge help to both students and teachers as part of our response to Covid-19. Deputy Emer Higgins said: “Schools in our area know their students best. So they are being empowered to support those who most need access to technology, with the right equipment.

The measures are part of a number of initiatives taken by the Department to support our children and young people who are at risk of educational disadvantage during the period of school closures. They include: Guidance being issued to all schools to support the ongoing learning of children with special educational needs and children who are at risk of disadvantage.

The Department of Education and Skills is also working with the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment and telecoms companies through industry body Ibec to make a number of relevant websites “zero rated”. This would allow students to access these sites with no data costs. Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh, added: “I believe the tech grants now being issued to schools can help harness the hard work, innovation and creativity being shown by our schools and their students to the greatest extent possible.

“Schools are being asked to prioritise exam classes, and then to look at where else access to technology is most needed. I am confident this will make a real difference to thousands of students and provide the technology they need to be able to access online supports. “At this time it is imperative we go further as a society to support more vulnerable young people. EXPANSION OF TRADING ONLINE VOUCHER SCHEME Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD, has announced a major expansion of supports for businesses impacted by COVID-19, including an expansion of the Trading Online Voucher Scheme and a reduction in the interest rate for Microfinance Ireland loans. Minister Humphreys announced the expansion of the €2,500 Trading Online Voucher Scheme through Local Enterprise Offices, for businesses employing up to 10 people. In agreement with the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment, Richard Bruton TD, an additional €3.3m is being provided to the scheme bringing the total available nationally to €5.6m. Local businesses in South Dublin that previously benefitted from the Trading Online Voucher Scheme can, from today, apply for a second voucher of up to €2,500, with cofunding of 10%. The voucher can be used to help add payment or booking systems to websites, along with subscriptions to low-cost online retailing platform solutions. A substantial reduction in interest rates on Microfinance Ireland loans was also announced, bringing the rate down to 4.5%, where applications are made through Local Enterprise Office South Dublin. COVID-19 Business Loans of up to €50,000 are

secure the lowest available rate and you will get valuable assistance in the application process and free one-to-one mentoring along the way.”

Commenting on the Trading Online Voucher Scheme, Minister Bruton said: “Trading Online Vouchers are a key government grant to help small and micro enterprises get online. The changes which we are announcing today will help companies, working with their Local Enterprise Office, to get online during this difficult period. This is particularly important when so many small businesses are closed. However, the value of the Trading Online Voucher will stand to your company for years to come, will boost your revenue, and will help you sustain and create jobs in the future.”

Meanwhile, The Business Continuity Voucher, worth up to €2,500 in third party consultancy support, is another new measure available for businesses through Local Enterprise Offices. It is designed for businesses across every sector that employs up to 50 people and can be used by companies and sole traders to develop short-term and long-term strategies. The goal is to help companies make informed decisions about what immediate measures and remedial actions should be taken, to protect staff and sales.

Welcoming the expansion of business supports, Tom Rooney with Local Enterprise Office South Dublin in South Dublin County Council said: “For many local businesses, the options for trading are very limited as a result of COVID-19. However, there are a lot of opportunities in online selling and by accessing this Trading Online Voucher scheme, small businesses can develop a sustainable strategy for increasing sales. He added: “If your business needs access to finance, applying for microfinance loans through Local Enterprise Office South Dublin will

New Mazda 3 Gets The ‘X’ Factor

WITH

By Breda Corrigan

A powerful statement in design, the allnew Mazda 3 is confident, invigorated and energised in equal measure, while also creating a sense of vitality. Additionally, no detail or consideration has been overlooked in terms of interior quality, and ambience, with a driver-informed cabin taking pride of place. The stunning new Mazda 3 hatchback is now available with the groundbreaking SKYACTIV-X engine. With a performance boost, it’s now even more enjoyable to drive, with added fuel efficiency and environmental performance, without compromise. Class-Leading Technology; The technological highlight of the All-New Mazda3 is the innovative SKYACTIV-X engine: The first commercial gasoline engine with Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) combines the best of two worlds - the advantages of gasoline and diesel technology in a new and unique engine. It offers powerful torque with outstanding fuel consumption, while low CO2 emission values translate to annual road tax of just €190. Work of Art; The new Mazda 3 is one of those cars that stirs every one of your senses, even before you drive, as it strikes you with its powerful, seductive presence and strong, sporty appeal. It is designed to make you feel like you are looking at a work of art – not just a car. The way light plays on it’s flowing lines gives the impression that it is moving, even when standing still. There is no denying that this is a handsome car, with similarity to the striking Alfa Romeo Giulietta in its proportions. It is a design language that works extremely well, and is sure to turn heads everywhere it goes. The cabin of the new Mazda 3 is very impressive, with soft-touch materials in all the important areas, leading to a high standard of finish

throughout, while the seats in my test car were supportive and comfortable in equal measure. Importantly, the car benefits from a new infotainment system, and brings the new Mazda 3 right up-to-date in terms of cutting-edge technology. Six Trim Levels; There are six trim levels available in the new Mazda 3 Hatchback – GS, GS-Sport, GS-L, GS-L Sport, GT, and range-topping GT Sport, all of which are extremely well specified. Standard equipment across the entire range includes key features, such as LED headlights with high beam control, Mazda radar cruise control, Bluetooth™ with Mazda MZD Connect, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Driver Attention Alert, rear parking sensors, alarm & immobiliser, 8.8” colour centre console display & multimedia commander, 7” TFT digital dashboard, Apple CarPlay™ & Android Auto™, multiple airbags, ISOFIX brackets, auto wipers, engine start/stop button, traffic sign recognition, Ecall with GPS, Smart City Brake Support with pedestrian recognition, and many more quality features. Engine Options; In total, there are three engines available in the new Mazda 3 - a 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G 120bhp petrol (naturally aspirated, as opposed to the turbo trend) a 1.8-litre SKYACTIV-D 116bhp diesel with a variable geometry turbo, and the new, highlyacclaimed, SKYACTIV-X 180bhp petrol engine. All engines have a mild hybrid system that runs the electrics from brake regeneration, and is a system that works seamlessly in practice. Transmission options include a slick sixspeed manual gearbox, or a conventional automatic, with all models coming in frontwheel-drive format.

Test Car; My test car was a Mazda 3 Hatchback 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-X model in GS-L Sport specification, and was finished in striking ‘Soul Red’ metallic paint for maximum impact. Upgrade features in this trim level include a rear digital camera, auto-dimming outer driver mirror, smart keyless entry, front seat heaters, dual-zone automatic airconditioning, front parking sensors, and a CD player. Producing 180bhp and 224Nm of torque, the refined petrol engine in my test car is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 8.3-seconds, can achieve a top speed of 216km/h (where permitted), and can consume as little as 5.5-litres of petrol for every 100km’s driven on a combined driving cycle. On the road, the new Mazda 3 proves itself to be a terrific car to drive. The instinctive firmness of the car’s platform ensures that the car can be driven briskly with total confidence, while remaining superbly composed, and retaining excellent ride quality. The six-speed manual gearbox is a pleasure to use, with a short, accurate throw, while the car’s fantastic steering setup provides great feedback to the driver at all times. Height and telescopic adjustment

of the multi-function steering wheel, along with excellent adjustment options on the driver seat ensures that a comfortable driving position is readily available. Superior Safety; In terms of safety, Mazda’s ethos is that avoiding an accident in the first place is always the safest route. With the available i-Activeness suite of safety features, sophisticated safety innovations alert the driver to hazards to help avoid collisionsor lessen their impact. Features such as Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert help improve your visibility and awareness of the road, and are amazingly effective. Pricing; The sporty & seductive new Mazda 3 range is priced from just €28,300 (ex-works), with my test car specification priced at €33,120 (ex-works). All Mazda passenger cars come with a 3-year/100,000km warranty, a 3-year paintwork warranty, and a 12-year corrosion warranty for total peace of mind motoring.

MERCEDES-BENZ LAUNCHES NEW MORE SPACIOUS GLA SUV Now and again a car comes along equipped with the good looks and choice of features likely to make it a winner in its sector. Such is the case with the new Mercedes-Benz GLA, a compact class SUV which is currently arriving into dealer showrooms across Ireland. Boasting added character, added spaciousness and added safety amongst its key features, the new GLA is the latest in a line of models first introduced six years ago, and later updated in a face-lifted variant launched in 2017. Described by Mercedes-Benz as ‘a sporty, lifestyle-oriented’ partner to the GLB, and a companion to the GLC and GLE within their wider family of SUV models, the GLA will be available here in a choice of two design lines – Progressive and a highperformance AMG version. Against a sales backdrop of more than 6.5milllion units worldwide, the luxury SUV segment is increasingly valuable to Mercedes-Benz – a fact underlined by the steps that have been taken to improve the GLA’s sporty appeal and interior spaciousness in a manner likely to make it a more compelling proposition for SUV fans. Made more than 100mm taller (despite being 15mm shorter) designers have given it added interior headroom for driver and front passenger and considerably greater rear legroom for back seat passengers. Dimensions-wise, track width has been increased by four centimetres while ground clearance has been raised, albeit marginally. Boot volume has been increased, helped by rear seats that can slide by up to 140mm. Other design features include details carried over from the larger 7-seat GLB and the GLC. Engines; In the new GLA, Mercedes-Benz

places its trust in the four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that were completely modernised for their new edition compact model series. Engines available at launch, all turbo charged, consist of four petrol and three diesel versions. Petrol models are a 1.3-litre, 163hp GLA 200, a 2-litre, 224hp GLA 250 and GLA 250 4MATIC. The AMG GLA 35 and AMG GLA 45 will also be available to order at the launch date. Diesel versions, all 1.9-litres, are a 150hp GLA 200d, GLA 200d 4-MATIC and a 190hp GLA 220d and GLA 220d 4MATIC. In the pipeline is a 180d 1.5-litre diesel and a plug-in petrol electric variant.

Commenting, Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in Ireland said: “the arrival of the new GLA is being supported with attractive price and purchase finance arrangements pitched competitively against those of its main rivals and broadly in harmony with those of its predecessor”.

that frames the view almost from doorto-door. Standard is the now familiar MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system and voice activated ‘Hey Mercedes’ driver assistance system, and touch-control pads mounted on the steering wheel. Extra spaciousness is key with more headroom, rear legroom and more boot space. More typical of an SUV, the seating position for driver and front passenger is higher and more upright while all-round visibility has also been improved. Ventilation outlets and air guidance vanes have a high-quality turbine look. Utility value being a design priority, rear seats come with 40:20:40 split. Standard is a height-adjustable load floor that, when set in the correct position with rear seat

backrests folded down, can be transformed into an almost flat loading area extending to the front seats. Safety; A host of safety and driver assistance systems are provided in a comprehensive Driver Assistance Package that includes automatic inputs to assist drivers with routine and accident avoidance emergency braking, distance control, parking, steering, lane keeping, blind spot observation, speed limit keeping, driver fatigue alerts, and more. One intriguing feature is a car wash function whereby, with a single command, exterior mirrors fold inwards, side windows and sliding roof close, rain sensor is suppressed and other settings disabled – all of which can be automatically deactivated when the driver exits the carwash.

Appearance; In appearance, the new GLA has a self-assured and dynamic exterior with short overhangs front and rear. As in their other SUVs, its single louvre radiator grille and central positioned star give it an unmistakable Mercedes-Benz appearance. Side and rear views are characterised by its powerful shoulders, contoured coupélike side profile, and doors that reach over the sills to give occupants ease of access and improved impact protection. Front and rear under guards and all-round protective cladding emphasise its off-road character. Inside, it has a contemporary, highquality look. Arguably, its most visually striking feature is a free-standing driver instrumentation and infotainment display

ALL-NEW SECOND-GENERATION OPEL MOKKA BEGINS ROAD TESTING Opel has confirmed the allnew, second-generation of its best-selling Mokka crossover has commenced a road-testing phase with Opel engineers. The allnew Mokka is set to enter production in the final quarter of this year, with its arrival in showrooms expected in early 2021. The

vehicle will be available from launch with an electric powertrain, ahead of petrol and diesel engines, a testament to Opel’s commitment to electrifying its entire range by 2024. Opel enthusiasts will observe that the new model has shed the “X” in its

name, a nod to the much celebrated original Mokka, that debuted in 2012. The bold new model is compact and robust like its popular predecessor, but promises to deliver German engineering excellence, in an even more stylish, efficient and technologically advanced

package. Covered in striking green camouflage, images of the muscular allnew Mokka test cars feature a large, yellow K across the rear doors and roofline and tease viewers as to what is behind the camouflage. Although the more intricate details of the design are not

completely visible yet, the muscular new Mokka has been designed to impress and already shows crisp proportions with short front and rear overhangs and a fully digitised cabin, hinting at a clear, new Opel exterior and interior design philosophy.

to do, but I’m looking forward to presenting the new Mokka soon.” James Brooks, Managing Director at Leeson Motors, Opel Importer in Ireland, said: “We are excited to give a sneak preview of what is to come with the all-new second-generation Mokka.

Opel CEO, Michael Lohscheller, said: “I have followed the development of the new Mokka very closely for two and a half years and I am very proud of this new Opel, which will be electric from the very beginning! I can promise that the new Mokka will be one of the most exciting cars in our long history!

The all-new Mokka will denote an important next step in Opel’s new design philosophy. Launching the car with a fully electric engine builds on our strategy to give our customers the freedom to choose the model and powertrain to suit their lifestyle or needs.”

This second generation shows everything Opel stands for today, and in the future and it will change the perception of our brand. Our engineers still have important work

The Mokka EV will join a quickly expanding range of electrified Opel models, including the Corsa-e and the Grandland Hybrid 4, just launched, and the new Vivaro-e, due to arrive before the end of this year.

SUPPORTS NEEDED FOR STRUGGLING PRINT MEDIA SECTOR Fianna Fáíl Spokesperson on Communications, Jack Chambers has called on the government to introduce a series of new measures to support print journalism. Deputy Chambers has written to both the Minister for Communications and Minister for Business on the need to introduce a forum through the BAI to provide

guidance during this crisis and to develop direct financial supports. Deputy Chambers said: “It is deeply concerning that we have yet to see an announcement on a targeted approach to keeping our papers publishing during the pandemic. At a time when the transmission of public health information

and quality publish service journalism has never been more important, advertising revenues for some papers have more than halved. Government support must be provided, and a joinedup approach established. “Ireland is now an outlier amongst our EU peers in failing to provide a joinedup response to the crisis in

the sector. For example, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Sweden have all announced supports amounting to €18.5 million or more. “While additional advertising has been provided, there appears to be no overarching approach designed to support those publications most at risk of

SUSI GRANT ELIGIBILITY MUST BE CLARIFIED Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe has said that the Minister for Education Joe McHugh needs to clarify the eligibility criteria for SUSI grant applications for those whose incomes have been drastically reduced as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Teachta Crowe made his remarks as the SUSI grant application process opened on 23rd April. Teachta Crowe said: “Hundreds of thousands of workers have

had their incomes reduced through no fault of their own as a result of the impact of Covid-19. “We all hope that the impact of this crisis will be short lived. However, for these workers and families, many will struggle with the financial burden of sending children to third-level in a few short months.

“However, it appears that the Department of Education has made no provision for these families as the SUSI grant application process

opens up and it appears that the Department will make a determination on grant applications based on incomes earned in 2019, ignoring the new reality for thousands of families. “The SUSI application process only allows for a change of circumstances to be taken into account where the change is ‘permanent, or for the foreseeable future’. Unfortunately, we know that many workers will not be returning to work

this pandemic employers and will not be in a reopen.

“I am calling on the Minister to clarify what arrangements are in place to support students from families that have seen a significant drop in income to meet the costs of thirdlevel education for the new academic year. “It is clear that the criteria applied in previous years is not fit for purpose and the Minister must take account of these new realities to ensure that those families and students who require financial support can access it.”

closure and job losses. “An Post’s newspaper delivery service is an excellent initiative, but some free papers may not be able to access it in the same way as other papers. Specific issues for the sector during the crisis including supply lines could also be addressed through this forum. “At the time of the BAI’s establishment, print media did not need financial

support in order to survive. As a result, many of the mechanisms which are available to journalists through other mediums don’t apply. This needs to be addressed through the establishment of a print media unit to coordinate the government response and to maintain local media during this period,” concluded Deputy Chambers.

THE PROCLAMATION EASTER MONDAY 2020

Tallaght based group, the Committee for Commemoration of Irish Famine Victims (C.C.I.F.V) asked people to do the following recently. “For the Proclamation to be read by Irishmen and Irishwomen and the generations of exiles next Easter Monday 13th April at 12 noon, in homes, home and abroad, at the threshold of the front door or apartment balcony. In commemoration of our 1916 patriot dead, and to honour our front-line workers who sacrifice themselves daily in the cause of the common good and health of the people of Ireland. It costs nothing to participate in reading the people’s proclamation, only a thought and a show of gratitude for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice 104 years ago and those who are living heroes today.” commented Michael Blanch of CCIFV.
