Having a little angel around the house sure is a joy but also hard work for first-time mothers. Feeding babies is not as easy as it seems. Their stomachs are a lot more sensitive than grownups. Here are a few guidelines on feeding a baby. Feeding babies 0-4 months During the first four months, babies should not be given any solid food since they do not have any teeth. At this time, they should be given only breast milk. Formula milks are also an option. However, these must not become the primary food of babies. Just like what baby milk products always quote, "Breast milk is best for babies up to two years". Babies at age 4-6 months Teeth are now beginning to appear. A few signs that they are ready to take soft solid foods are: they sit pretty well on baby chairs, become interested in food, begin to close mouth when spoon is handed over, gain weight, and easily become hungry after breast feeds. At this time, you must give them baby cereals and pureed food. Breastfeeding must still be given. Begin with 4 to 5 teaspoons and increase the amount gradually on the next few days. Babies at age 6-8 months Babies are now ready to take even harder foods at this age. You can start giving them pureed foods like pureed vegetables, pureed meat, pureed legumes, pureed tofu, and pureed fruits. These meals must be given only twice a day with 3-9 tablespoons. Make sure to add fruits on the meal. Start with ¼ cup of fruits and turn it to ½ cup in the next days. Do not forget to breastfeed the baby. Babies at age 8-12 months Dairy products can now be given to babies such as cheese and yogurt. However, cow's milk is still not appropriate until the baby's first year. Foods to be given vary from mashed fruits, cereals, teething crackers and bananas chopped into small pieces. Protein-rich foods should also be considered like fish, tofu, and beans. Start with ¼ cup of cereals, mashed fruits, and vegetables. Proteins foods must be started with 1/8 cup only and gradually increase the amount. Breast milk should still be given to the baby. Until when should I breastfeed the baby?

Breastfeeding, as milk commercials would quote, should be given at a maximum of 2 years. Milk formulas must not become the primary milk supplement. A baby's digestive system is more delicate that's why breast milk is advised. It is digested easily so the nutrients are easily taken by the body. With a healthier body through breastfeeding, babies will have fewer allergies in the future. Also, it is said that the colostrum, a substance that comes in breast milk during the first few days after delivery carries more antibodies. However, breastfeeding still depends on the health condition, availability, lifestyle, and comfort of the mother.
