Sartell – the city with something for everyone by Dennis Dalman Sartell-St. Stephen Newsleader Editor

What had been for so many decades a small, quiet, sleepy riverside village known as Sartell suddenly awakened and began to grow by leaps and bounds. From a population averaging about 300 people, the thriving city is now home to nearly 18,000. The spurts of growth began in the late 1970s and early 80s, and it’s been going gangbusters ever since, with business and neighborhood developments springing up right and left and everywhere in between. The area now known as Sartell was once a border between Native American tribes – the Anishinaabe to the north and the Dakotas to the south. In 1846, the Native American Ho-Chunk people came to the area, for a brief time, but eventually all native peoples in the area moved elsewhere or were placed on reservation lands. When European settlers arrived in the area in the 1800s, the site became the ideal place for a lumber company and a paper mill. Joseph B. Sartell arrived in the area in 1854 and later started the Sartell Brothers Lumber Co., along with his sons. Sartell was incorporated officially in 1907. Through the decades, lumber and paper were the economic bulwarks of Sartell, providing employ-

ment for people throughout the greater Sartell and St. Cloud area. The mill went through many ownership and name changes throughout its 100-year-plus history – from Watab Pulp & Paper to its last incarnation as the Verso paper mill. Tragedy and shock struck in 2012 when a fire and explosion at Verso killed an employee and crippled the plant, forcing its owners to close the mill forever, bringing to a close a long and revered Sartell tradition. Another economic bedrock, which is still thriving, is DeZurik Water Controls, a manufacturer of industrial valves. During the Sartell “boom” of the past couple of decades, what was once a village became a dynamic city: rapid business growth, dozens of neighborhood developments and multi-unit housing, arts and recreation, one of the finest school systems in the state, more than 30 neighborhood and public parks, an extensive hike-bike trail network, a thriving senior-citizen club, an ice arena, two golf courses, a vast medical complex with clinics and specialized services that serve people from a wide area, and much more. The latest amenity is an $11-million Sartell Community Center on the south side of the city that boasts three gyms, an elevated walking track, publicuse rooms, a senior-citizen center, kitchen facilities,

a kids’ play area, a pick-up-drop-off library service and more. The center will be paid for by half-cent regional sales-tax revenue. A soon-to-be massive development will be a new Sartell High School, as well as alterations and improvements to its two elementary schools, its middle school and the former high school. It was all made possible when voters approved a school-building bond of more than $100 million. All of the rapid growth came with challenges, including extensive and expensive infrastructure projects – water, sewer, utilities, roads and ongoing improvements. And yet, despite the expensive projects, Sartell remains the lowest for property-tax rates in the greater St. Cloud area. The city also has a topnotch bond rating of AA from the Standard and Poor’s bond-rating agency. Sartell residents are very proud of their city. Despite its rapid growth and endless growing pains, it still retains an old-time river-town ambience thanks to the mighty river, the many parks and athletic fields, the green spaces, a farmers’ market, arts-andcrafts events and the leisurely walking-biking trails. Visitors often remark about how impressed they are by such user-friendly amenities. We, the staff of the Sartell-St. Stephen Newsleader, want to join the city in giving a warm welcome to visitors and new residents.

This resource guide is published bi-annually by Von Meyer Publishing Inc., publishers of Sartell’s and St. Stephen’s official newspaper, the Sartell-St. Stephen Newsleader.
