Welcome to the river city with small-town ambience by Dennis Dalman Sartell Newsleader Editor

Most visitors to Sartell would probably never imagine the thriving city was a mere “village” not too many decades ago. For many years, the population hovered somewhere in the 300 range. The population is now pushing the 18,000 mark. It wasn’t until the late 1970s and early 1980s that Sartell began to grow noticeably, but when it did – boom! – it went gangbusters. What had once been farm fields and huge open tracts quickly filled with residential developments, businesses, a new city hall, an ice arena, dozens of new neighborhood parks and new city parks, a network of roads and trails, several shopping malls and a medical campus area that attracts patients from throughout central Minnesota and beyond. In just a 10-year period, in the 1980s, Sartell was transformed from a small river town into a dynamic city with scores of amenities its long-time residents would never have dreamed of in the past. What’s remarkable is Sartell managed to achieve all of the growth and resultant infrastructure while still maintaining – year after year – the lowest property-tax rate among all the cities in the

greater St. Cloud area. To this day, however, despite its metro-style growth, Sartell still preserves its river-town charms with its parks, quaint old neighborhoods, leisurely pedestrian-friendly walking-biking trails and a down-home ambience. Sartell is an example of how success begets success. As the city grew by leaps and bounds, businesses and residents from far and wide moved to Sartell for its amenities, its services, recreation options, job opportunities and – last but not least – one of the finest school districts in the state. The school district includes St. Stephen, a city northwest of Sartell, which, like Sartell, has also grown with the years and yet still retains its rural, rustic beauty with some of the most beautiful farmland and wooded areas in the state. For a very long time, the two economic giants in Sartell were its Verso paper mill and its industrial valve plant (DeZurik Co.), both of which had major customers throughout the world. Sadly, in 2012 an explosion at the paper mill, which killed an employee, caused the plant to shut down permanently after more than 100 years of steady operation. It was a terrible economic and personal loss to the residents of Sartell, many of whom had worked at that plant for generations.

But life goes on . . . And Sartell has much to look forward to, including a community center, which is now under construction in south Sartell, an area of business-residential and cultural developments dubbed “Town Square.” The center will include three gyms, an elevated indoor walking track, a community meeting room, large kitchen, a senior-citizen area, play areas for children and possibly some limited library services. That $11-million facility, long anticipated, will be paid for by regional half-cent sales-tax revenue to the city. Another exciting development, soon to be built, is a new state-of-the-art high school for Sartell, along with improvements to the existing schools: middle school, old high school, two elementary schools and pre-school programming. Residents approved those projects in a $105-millioin referendum in 2016. Those are just two of the many projects that are in the works or in the planning stages for Sartell. We encourage visitors to explore Sartell at leisure – its city hall, businesses, schools, parks, trails, shopping malls and medical facilities. It’s a city that truly has something for everybody. The staff of the Sartell-St. Stephen Newsleader newspaper want to join the city in giving visitors a warm welcome to Sartell.

This resource guide is published bi-annually by Von Meyer Publishing Inc., publishers of Sartell’s and St. Stephen’s official newspaper, the Sartell-St. Stephen Newsleader.
