Welcome to Sartell, St. Stephen! A long-time river town along the Mighty Mississippi, Sartell was once a paper-mill village with only a few hundred residents. St. Stephen, just north of Sartell, was also a tiny town, barely a dot on a map. How times have changed! In just the past two decades, Sartell and St. Stephen have both grown in their own ways. Sartell has grown by leaps and bounds from that quiet, sleepy village to a dynamic city with thriving diverse businesses, a top-rated school system, rapid park development, a superb hiking-biking trail system, residentialhome growth in charming neighborhoods, new churches, green spaces everywhere, a series of malls and a thriving medical-facilities campus. The city is now home to 16,500 residents. St. Stephen has also grown, with more new residents and homes, more businesses, residential parks and a ball park. Still, it retains its small-town ambience and its rural beauty, surrounded by some of the most beautiful wooded farmland in the state. St. Stephen also shares a school district with Sartell. The growth in both cities continues, thanks

to progressive city leaders, a robust Chamber of Commerce, actively engaged residents, service organizations and scores of volunteers who are so proud of their cities and want to make them even better. Sartell suffered a serious blow three years ago when there was an explosion at its historic 100-year-old paper mill, killing an employee and forcing the plant to close forever. It was a painful setback, but the city rebounded with grit and determination. In recent years, there have been so many developments that bring economic strength and recreational-cultural enrichments to Sartell: the constant growth of the medicalfacilities campus that is a hub for central Minnesota and beyond, plans for a Town Square “downtown-type” area in south Sartell, Pinecone Central Park with is many playing fields and music-and-movies-in-the-park events, a thriving organization for senior citizens, a popular farmers’ market in all seasons, new businesses and industries, major road improvements and connections, and plans for a multi-purpose Sartell Community Center to be built as early as 2016.

Faced with so many growing pains through the years, the City of Sartell has managed to retain a robust financial stability and has earned year after year top ratings from Standard and Poor for its healthy financial practices. Sartell has become so attractive for so many reasons that many people who work in other cities choose to live in Sartell and commute. Despite its growth, Sartell retains its neighborly riverbank-city charm. St. Stephen, although not directly located next to the river, has its own unique down-home charms and recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. One of its unique qualities is that it is the largest Slovenian-populated city west of the Mississippi River, a fact its residents are proud of and work hard to keep that enriching heritage alive. We are confident visitors will quickly notice and enjoy the many charms Sartell and St. Stephen have to offer. Whether you visit briefly, for a longer period or decide to “move in,” Sartell and St. Stephen and all of their residents warmly welcome you.

This resource guide is published bi-annually by Von Meyer Publishing Inc., publishers of Sartell’s and St. Stephen’s official newspaper, the Sartell-St. Stephen Newsleader.

The Sartell High School student section at the homecoming football game Sept. 18 was a blur of pink as students and community members came out to support their team as well as raise funds for cancer research. The student council raised $4,000 with efforts from homecoming T-shirt sales and a tailgate dinner before the game. The football booster club raised an additional $883 for the Tackle Cancer effort during the evening, which was capped off with a football team win over Rocori, 28-21.
