ndia’s handicrafts are a wonderful world of creativity, unsurpassed in any corner of the world. This creativity has developed through centuries as our civilization has progressed. In our country each district or a region has developed its own distinctive form of handicrafts. One aspect that is significant is that handicrafts-manufacturing is a labour-intensive industry; simply put, this sector generates enormous employment. Most artisans work in their own environment and it has been our effort to provide them the skills and tools needed to upgrade their manufacturing processes. In order to achieve this we have created clusters of handicrafts manufacturing units in many areas. This concept helps to provide training, keep them abreast of latest fashions and trends and more importantly inform them about government’s policies and incentives. The government is very S S Gupta, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Government keen to develop handicrafts of India, believes that the time has come when the country's handibecause it contributes to better the lot of artisans in country. crafts industry can look forward to better export opportunities. We want Indian products not only to be well known but be of a high quality and design. The next step is that these products need to reach the market, be it overseas or within the country. The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts has been proactive in promoting these products by holding periodic fairs and exhibitions in different cities in the country. In fact, this has been appreciated by overseas buyers. The EPCH has been searching for

Indian handicrafts hold a special place in the world, it faces considerable competition — mostly from other Asian countries. This is where EPCH has stepped in to conduct workshops either in clusters or at designated places where the workforce can assemble conveniently to upgrade skills and in turn create products of higher quality. new markets particularly in the emerging markets like the Latin America countries, Middle East, the Eastern European countries, etc. In fact, we are trying to find new markets in countries that have not been hit by recession. Our emphasis is on skill upgradation because we feel there is a shortage in skills in handicrafts. Today, we are trying to develop people with new skills. For that we have set up various common facilities with modern machinery. In addition, we are also setting up test labs where artisans can get test certificates for their products. Done originally on white cotton with patterns of stems and petals combined with flowers — these were excellent hand work. There are different qualities and variety of Chikankari. Today, Chikankari work is done on mulls, muslins, voiles, organza and on polyester fabrics, etc. Zari work is an embroidery with gold and silver threads. Now, these threads have been replaced by synthetic and artificial threads. However, the artistry remains the same. Kutch embroidery has been a tradition of one of the nomadic tribes of India from the Kutch region in Gujarat state and are in demand the world over. Other techniques used on textiles for a variety of purposes are block printing, Kalamkari, mirror work, appliquÊ work, patch work, crochet and lace work. EPCH's product specific shows have achieved success in the past and I am confident that this one-in-three show will add another feather to our caps. This show will bring manufacturers, producers and exporters who cannot participate in overseas shows an opportunity to reach out to international buyers.

Home furnishing products can be broadly categorised into five categories that include bedding, window dressings, bathroom textiles, cushions and covers and table linen. The leading trends come from Europe, potentially one of the most profitable markets in the world. Although, a number of countries in Europe faced the recession, the recovery

Indian home furnishings exports is Germany with France and the UK coming close. Other important markets are Italy, Spain and Belgium. The household and furnishing textiles market in the EU has experienced a non-stop, but slow growth for many years. Demand patterns vary substantially due to differences in culture, traditions and tastes. The bulk of household and furnishing textiles purchased in the EU during any particular year is basically for replacement purposes rather than constituting a primary purchase. Most household and furnishing textiles purchases are made to replace unfashionable or old products and during the recession, such purchases were deferred. One of the most important factors that exporters from India must remember is the climate of the country the products are meant for. This is especially true of bed linen, furnishing and floor covering textiles. The colder climate of northern Europe in contrast to the southern regions is a factor which strongly contributes to the high per capita demand of carpets and curtains in Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands and other major market areas like Germany, the UK and Northern France. Additionally, a mild autumn or winter has a negative influence on the demand for household and furnishing textiles, while a cold or rainy spring or summer has a positive influence. According to estimates, retailers have plans for tighter inventories and would rely more on suppliers to bear the inventory burdens. The longerterm prospects for the market are more optimistic with moderate growth forecast for 2011-2012 when the economy is expected to regain momentum.

however slow has not seen any lowering of quality standards in the home furnishing products. Today, Europe’s demands are competitive and sophisticated. To be successful in such a dynamic market requires a keen insight into consumer demand for design, quality, presentation and communication. Prices may have dropped due to the rise in the number of orders but the demand for exclusive and authentic high-quality home textiles that are also eco-friendly have increased. Market analysts have predicted that the EU market for household and furnishing textiles will rise in the future and though a large proportion of such textiles is already being exported from India, the quantities are expected to rise further. That will primarily be due to the rising prices of Chinese products, which will make EU customers to look for outsourcing possibilities in India. Among the countries that top the list for

for carpets. Bed, bath, table and kitchen linen are no longer considered to be just plain utility items and top of the line designers compete with each to produce and promote these textiles in a big way. While there are distinct seasonal preferences, many designers create design schemes that are in consonance with various fabrics and house decoration. While colours tend to be uniform in EU countries, design trends have become more individual. In fact, a number of distinct trends are moving ahead simultaneously to form a composite fashion flow. Home decor magazines point out that while brand awareness among consumers is limited, certain trends that influence the demand for household and furnishing textiles in the EU are noticeable. First, there is a rising interest in fashionable textiles especially by the younger age groups. Consumers in several EU member states have started aspiring and become more Western in their home interiors as household incomes rise. Added to that is the fact that there is a growing demand for natural fibres mainly cotton and blends with cotton — indeed a significant fact to be remembered by potential Indian exporters — in the household linen sector. Green consumers are on the increase with interest in products that reflect care and concern for the environment. This is particularly true in the UK, Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands and fashion designers are increasingly using eco-friendly materials like natural fibres and recycled materials. Third and perhaps no less important is the fact that consumers in Europe have become more price sensitive and more quality conscious. THE TRENDS IN NORTH AMERICA Across the Atlantic, in North America the recent 14 I JANUARY 2012
global economic slowdown has nudged consumers back to tradition and formality— a union of industrial materials and 21st century design. Consumers are looking for “useful things that last”, and comforting influences, quality classics, fine finishes and “minimal luxury”. The trends are moving away from the stark modern look to a more eclectic style that incorporates some richer and bolder muted colours, more textures, layers, and motifs from around the world. The colour palette includes muted mid—tones across the colour spectrum, mixed with taupe and black. Exporters need to keep in mind that worn, vintage accessories and frames are making a big comeback. Articles made with brass and worn metals — gilded, antiqued, rubbed — all of it, will be much in demand. Among textiles natural materials with organic textures and finishes are even more popular — like, upholstery and drapery in nature—inspired patterns and neutral colours. The movement is towards celebrating local crafts and customs, but also boldly mixing colour and pattern in new ways. Products and materials such as bronze, copper, clay, cotton, linen and hemp — which are environments friendly, contribute to healthy indoor air quality, and can be repurposed or recycled at the end of their lifespan — are be in high demand. A renewed interest in hand-made textile techniques including braiding, knotting and weaving is on the rise. Chunky knits are everywhere. Nature references, interlocking, matted and random patterns found in nature, interpreted in textiles and other products are in vogue. Using natural textures like hemp, jute, organic cotton, recycled polyester, bamboo fiber, organic wool and linen, and soy silk will help keep it simple but still green. Hand-made and experimental materials are celebrated, as a “cultural hybrid”.

specialist & A Exports is one of the top suppliers of home textiles to buyers in Europe. The company has been in the business since 1994. With more than 15 years of experience, Arvind Pugalia is well aware of the demands that his clients have. A specialist in patchwork, Pugalia has an inhouse design team that keeps track of the latest designs, motifs and colours around the world. However, A&A Exports is flexible and is always ready to accommodate the designs, colours or fabrics that its clients want. Over the years, Pugalia has noticed that the choice of colours not only vary from country-to-country but also from market-to-market: there are often subtle variations in the colours chosen by high-street stores and those in others. Added to that is the top-end quality of products created by Pugalia. “The knowledge and experience gained over the years has helped A&A Exports build a steady clientele in Europe, especially in Spain, France and Germany. Perhaps, one of the other important factors that has ensured the demand of A&A Exports’ patchwork products is the fact that they all made of 100 per cent cotton,” says Pugalia. The company has chalked out extensive plans to introduce cardboard with fabric patchwork that it plans to launch in the near future. With the help of EPCH, A&A Exports hopes that it will be able to make a bigger mark among clients around the world.

designs loor Decor has been in the business of floor coverings since 1987 and Rajesh Mathew believes that were it not for EPCH, his company would not have done so well. “EPCH has been very helpful. It helps us market our products not only in the domestic market but also in the overseas market. This helps us gauge the market demands and as a result it lessens our day-to-day obstacles, which we may face while exporting,” says Mathew. The company has been exporting its products to countries such as Europe, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Austria, USA and Brazil. “We take great pride in our designs,” says Mathew. Besides his own design team, which is always on the lookout to give a new angle to creativity, the exporter also accepts designs from his clients. Designs and demands differ from country to country and sometimes even from client-to-client. Therefore, it is very important to create new designs keeping colour and material in mind. The company is not looking at adding new products. Its idea is to concentrate on their existing products so that it can give its clients full satisfaction and give them customised services.

aharaja Bed Cover Pvt. Limited has been in existence for three decades. Specialising in cushion covers, chair pads and bed covers, Bhisma B Devnani believes that quality and design has helped him build a strong client base in the Middle East, Germany and Australia. Using cotton for his products, Devnani's in-house team of designers rolls out products that are instant hits in the foreign markets. “Our choice of colours and designs has given Maharaja an edge over the others in the market. Every year, our design team comes out with new designs,” he says with confidence. The design team keeps track of fashion and styles in vogue — especially in the countries that Maharaja exports to — and creates products accordingly. It must be mentioned that the team is fully aware that colours preferences change from country-to-country. Even so, the company is flexible enough to accommodate designs, colours or material suggested by overseas clients. While Devnani mentions that Maharaja would not have been able to do so well were it not for the help EPCH had given, the company has over the years strengthened its product portfolio in the home textiles section. Today, although there are enough reasons for starting new product lines, Devnani would like to consolidate Maharaja's production before venturing to anything new.

opal Maheshwari knows everything there is to know about the home textiles industry. It seems inevitable after heading the company named after him, Gopalas Textile Overseas, for 20 successful years. The company specialises in manufacturing home furnishings, bed covers, table covers, and cushion covers. While supplying this delectable range of products to countries all over the world, Gopal Maheshwari has noticed some trend, “Customers in Europe and Australia have a similar taste and tend to order the same products while we have to cater to different needs for people in the Middle East and the US.” What makes this enterprise so special is its emphasis on manufacturing recycled textile products. Its in-house design team wanted to be different and bring something original to its products, and hence the idea of recycled textile products was born. The craftsmanship on the cushion covers, table covers, bed covers, and furniture is so delicate that it is impossible to tell that the products are made from recycled materials. Thus, shopping with Gopals’s is doubly satisfying.

rofile India's exclusivity is its expertise in 'Christmas decorations'. Having been in the business since 1989, Vivek Jolly is confident about the quality of his product and the exclusivity of his designs. “Maintaining quality, giving new designs and using durable fabric, which is beautiful and long lasting, is what the client is looking for,” says Jolly. Since its exports are spread across Europe, USA and Middle East, the taste and choice of products vary significantly, says Jolly and they have to be ready to meet a clientele that has varied demands at all times. Although it is not using any eco-friendly process, we have plan to add new products to its existing ones. When it has clients, which are spread out over Europe, Middle East and the USA there is always that huge array of demands which they are confidently ready to meet. This happens only when there is a dedicated team, which is ready to show off its creative skills not only in the existing products but every new product it launches.

verything around us in this modern world is digital. And so are the products from Riyash International. From designing cushion covers to bags, Hema Jain has put her signature creations in digital form. In the business from 1998, she has been able to meet the demands in the competitive market. “With changing technology comes even more challenging situations. The client is intelligent and knows exactly what he wants. And it is here that our creativity is put to test. We believe in facing these challenges and taking them up-front to please our clients,” she says. “We do make changes according to the needs and tastes of our clients. Especially since we supply to Europe and America we have to be prepared for different tastes. While the US often believes in sober taste, the demand from Europe is for classic designs,” she says. The exporters believe in using eco-friendly fabric like jute and linen and it is this which gives them that extra edge many a time. “If there is a market for new products, we shall certainly look into adding new products. We like challenges and with the help of EPCH we hope to take our exports to greater heights,” says Jain.

ong back in 1970, Vijay Sheel, visualised a dream and decided to shape it under the brand name of AVS International. Since then, he has not stopped or looked back. His company concentrates in the Home Textile segment and its products are well known in international markets such as Portugal, Spain, Holland, UK, Austria, Germany, France, Japan and Australia. “We follow international standards, the most current technology, backed by skilled workers coupled with stringent quality controls throughout the manufacturing process, right from the sourcing to the finishing and packaging,” says Sheel. The quality standards and the designs of the company have impressed buyers in the markets that it is presently catering to. AVS International believes in delivery as per the buyers' tastes and has an in-house team of professional designers who have the capacity to understand, visualise and create designs as per needs of the buyers. The team is quite aware of the fact that tastes of ultimate consumers varies with the change in the location in the international market. Hence the designs are created with a deep understanding of the mindset of the buyers and pulse of the market. All the raw materials used in the manufacture of the products are ecofriendly, which helps create acceptability of AVS' products in the international market. Diversification in other product lines is not on the agenda of the company at present. The management of the company feels obliged to EPCH for providing a platform for exposure in the international market.

ashmi Bansal, the personality behind the success of Daya Raj Exports, still remembers that day in the year 1993 when she took a decision to start this venture. She says: “I had all odds against me when I decided to start this venture. It was only my confidence, dedication and my family support which encouraged me to go ahead. Today, we have a very good standing in the Western Europe market.” The path was not so easy and comfortable for Daya Raj Exports in this competitive world. But Bansal's sole aim to establish this venture was on the basis of stringent quality controls and innovative designing. Here Bansal adds: “I am very finicky about my designing and can never think of compromising on the quality of my products. After an extensive market study we picked up only a few articles like cushions, bed covers and concentrated on their designing and quality standards.” Despite strong competition, Daya Raj Exports could penetrate in the international market and capture a good market share in the Western Europe market. The product line of Daya Raj Exports does not vary much for one geographical region to another. Bansal considers it a big plus point to enter new markets. To ramp up the product line, Daya Raj Exports doesn't mind using non-eco-friendly raw materials. “We look forward to penetrate into new global markets to increase our market share of these products and are not willing to add any new products in our existing product line for the time being,” concludes Bansal.

ased in the Pink City of Jaipur, Evergree Handicrafts has been in the business since 2002. Over the past decade or so, Evergree has developed into a large enterprise specialising in the manufacture and export of bed covers, bed linen, carpets and rugs, cushions and covers, durries, duvets, quilts and coverlets. Each step of the manufacturing process is carried out within the export house itself. The USP of every product that is sold is that it is individually handcrafted, without the use of any machines; a particularly commendable task in this day and age where almost everybody has mechanised the production process. Evergreen relies heavily on a dedicated design team of designers and experienced craftspersons to convert any idea, drawing or sketch of the customer into a physical product. This design team's motto is “to be fully engaged in new developments and prove our products at the most competitive prices in the fastest time to keep ahead of competition”. Creativity is the heart of Evergree and its elegant collection illustrates the difference — superior craftsmanship, exquisite design, definitive luxury, unsurpassed quality and exceptional value. In fact, the company prides in the fact that its selection of new designs easily becomes cherished family treasures. The designers develop designs that are beautiful artistically yet functional in today's home. This is what has led to a huge client base and Nitesh Jain is proud to be associated with many well-known designer houses from Europe.

Zahin's Basil Baradeiya believes “Besides maintaining quality, we also like to pamper the client with new designs. The client is always looking for something 'different' and it is here that we come in with creative ideas.” “EPCH has been a great support for us. We often get direct buyers from them and this surely is a boon. Other than that they give us support at all times,” says Baradeiya Introducing different shades of colours and material, this exporting house has been able to lend a touch of class to its products and it is this quality and class that has allowed it to export regularly. Over the few years, it has been in existence, Zahin has been able to grow by leaps and bounds Baradeiya wants to concentrate on his present product portfolio and not really add new products to its existing lot.

Nazir said, “We always strive to preserve the rich and vibrant cultural heritage of India and for that we have been nurturing the craftsmanship of our country since 1990. I always wanted to go for a creative occupation. It is most gratifying when we are able to provide the value for money to our overseas buyers.” The Cottage Arts Promotion specialises in blending modern design concepts with ancient cultural heritage. “The European countries, where most of our business is concentrated at present, are enamoured by our products and that is the true reward for our achievements” added Nazir. ashapura Overseas has been so consistent in the quality of its products that it has managed to create a ‘silver lining’ around its brand during the last fifteen years under the able guidance of Mrs. Indra Bhandari. When asked what encouraged Mrs. Bhandari to go for this products line, she said, “It was the wise choice out of many alternatives available at that time. We wanted to step into a product line which could offer a wide range of products!” This wise decision has helped Aashapura Overseas to capture a chunk of the market in major countries on the globe. The variety in the product line and stringent quality controls has always helped Aahapura Overseas to attain and maintain its position in the market. Mrs. Bhandari added: “In this competitive world everything is designed with due diligence, but few things are designed well. For me, designing is nothing but putting elements in a way as best can be accomplished to attain a particular purpose.” Aashapura Overseas is very particular about the variety of designs to meet the expectation of its buyers. With their totally eco-friendly product line, Aashapura Overseas has its hands full and is not planning any new additions at the moment.

ccessorize India is a class apart in home textiles. Started in 2000 by Praveeen Sachdeva, the company specialises in the supply of cushions and covers and decorative table covers along with gift boxes and curtain tiebacks. Over the years, Sachdeva has perfected the products he supplies to the world. Today, Accessorize India's table covers have created a loyal fan following in Europe and the US. However, Sachdeva is quick to point out that though Accessorize India's products are of the top quality — both in design and in material used — there are still many buyers who have yet to start buying from India: in fact, they prefer buying cheap products from China. Accessorize India's designs are specially created for buyers abroad. While colours and motifs change from country-to-country, the in-house design team keeps a tab on the designs that are in vogue and creates products accordingly. Sachdeva, however, is flexible. “If my clients prefer a certain shade or a design, Accessorize India is more than ready to satisfy these clients,” says Sachdeva. He does not have any eco-friendly products in his portfolio at the moment but there are plans to include some in the future. One of the products that Sachdeva is seriously looking at are ladies bags — especially the beaded ones.

Ramesh Khatri took up this challenge in the year 1989 and within a span of 22 years Khatritex has spread its wings in almost every nook and corner of the world. Today, Khatritex exports its products to every part of the world. Commented Ramesh Khatri, “There are four major aspects in exports, i.e. design, material, quality and pricing and we take care of all these aspects up to the last detail.” According to Khatri, designing is the most difficult and challenging aspect of this business. One has to be quick enough to foresee the expectations of the buyer and get along with their thoughts to read their minds and taste. The product has to be developed with best possible raw materials and as per the buyers’ prescribed quality standards, keeping in view the competitive pricing. Khatri admits that there is a huge variance in the designs and colour selection from country-to-country but then those norms have to be adhered to. Khatritex prefers to use only eco-friendly material in the manufacture of its products and depending up on buyers' demand is open to add new products in the product line.

ags are a woman's fancy. But Anita Ahuja from Conserve HRP has taken care to see that he pampers both the genders the male and the female. He has created different kinds of hand bags, computer bags and just every kind of bag to suit the mindset of people of all ages. And when you add striking creative designs to these bags, the result is a treat to the eyes and the mind. Ahuja's Conserve HRP was born out of a desire to reduce waste, improve energy efficiency while helping some of the poorest of city's slums. Conserve achieves all this by turning plastic bags into high fashion. After much experimentation, Ahuja and his team hit upon the idea of not recycling, but upcycling by washing, drying, and pressing the bags into sheets. Handmade Recycled Plastic (HRP) was born and designs for handbags came flooding in. Ahuja has been meeting the demands for bags since 2003 and his company has been exporting bags to the Netherlands, France, America and Germany. Creating bags out of different materials and adding those creative designs together with high-class quality is what the company has been able to do in the past few years. “With so much support from EPCH especially at the start-up stage, it became easier to handle exports. We would probably not have been able to handle small but important issues without the help of EPCH,” says Ahuja. The company is now looking at introducing cushion covers in its list of new products.

There is so much to see and do in Rajasthan that a tourist would be at his wit's end to find out where to begin. There are forts with tons of history, havelis with exquisite paintings, bird sanctuaries, culture, cuisine and much more...
he battle cry piercing the stillness, clanging of swords, soldiers making frenetic attempts to climb the battlements, thud of cannon balls and sounds of hooves of galloping horses — that was Rajasthan of yore. There was splendour, opulent living, magnificent palaces, large forts and fierce battles. If you think there was blood and gore only, think again. The rulers were also patrons of art, unique Rajasthani culture and cuisine that flourished under rulers, small and big. The palaces were embellished, elaborate stucco work and frescoes adorned the walls, waterfalls or fountains kept the courtyards cool in native ingenuity, ubiquitous sheesh mahal, or large room adorned with mirrors, held prime spot in most of the palaces and least of all were exquisitely crafted jewellery that the rulers displayed. The history of Rajasthan is replete with valour, a few inescapable internecine wars, and

a lot of individual heroic deeds. The forts, palaces and monuments are past and on this past the foundation of present tourism has been laid. Today, Rajasthan is a hot and haute destination in the world of tourism. First-time visitors have one question: Where to start in this land of splendour and awe? Is it a “golden triangle circuit or a Jaipur-AjmerPushkar circuit? To be frank, every corner of

G&H Rajasthan is a starting point. It is often said that every sand dune in the Thar Desert has history written all over it. So have the forts and palaces. A tour of Rajasthan does not start, or end, with Jaipur, Jodhpur or Udaipur. What about Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar, Jhalrapattan or Shekhawati region that has a collection of gigantic painted mansions, now popular as Shekhawati art! Jaipur, the Pink City, is sine qua non on a Rajasthan tour. Till the beginning of the 18th Century, the royals lived inside Amber fort and subjects scattered around in hamlets. It was Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II who decided to create a new habitat and it was built under the supervision of a young architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya and completed by 1727. This city planned on a grid pattern, stands in stark contrast to the present haphazard growth, in all directions, that is called Jaipur. Within the hustle-bustle of the Pink City are several palaces, the stone observatory Jantar Mantar and picture postcard perfect Hawa Mahal, or palace of wind, a five-storey building having a faรงade of semi-octagonal and delicately carved honeycomb windows. Hawa Mahal was built for the women of the royal household to watch, without being seen, the life on the streets below or royal processions. From the bazaar one can see the hillocks to the north on which are perched massive forts of Nahargarh and Amber (pronounced Amer). The Kachchwaha dynasty that ruled this region for almost a millennium, uninterrupted, migrated from central India or present day Madhya
Pradesh. Down the centuries, as the dynasty grew, it splintered and the princes set various, but smaller, kingdoms or principalities but remained vassals to Jaipur's Maharaja. A half hour's trip takes you to Amber fort, located on a hill, a little lower than Nahargarh fort. There are three ways of going up to the fort: by foot, vehicle or on an elephant. The latter is a favourite mode for foreign tourists, perhaps to experience the royal mode of travel before experiencing the royal way of living within the ramparts. There is undoubtedly plenty to see. History buffs have plenty to savour within the fort as well as in other forts that dot the Rajasthan landscape. There is, however, another kind of history one can go through in the Shekhawati region, north of Jaipur. It is not about the mustachioed kings on their horses, but business kings. Their names ring a bell: Birla, Goenka, Jhunjhunwala, Kajaria, Poddar, Saraf and many more have their origins in this sand-swept region. They have not left any forts but massive havelis, or mansions, decorated by frescoes within and outside. In short, the havelis could best be described as open air art galleries. Start haveli-gazing from Sikar, about 115 km from Jaipur on NH 11, but be armed with a good map and preferably with a guide. Though the owners of many of these havelis left generations ago in pursuit of lucrative businesses, a number of these mansions are still intact and the frescoes on the outer walls have not faded. One guide proudly remarked that these were painted with vegetable JANUARY 2012 I 87

pigments and followed with a tongue in cheek remark, before British Raj came up with synthetic paints! Art connoisseurs would be delighted to see the gradual transformation of traditional themes of gods, heroes, epics and legends to contemporary trains and cars, figures of sahibs and memsahibs holding parasols with dogs on leash. It is an indicator that as decades passed by and interaction and association with the British followed, the themes changed with changing times. Look around: these massive mansions and the frescoes flourished despite inhospitable, semi-arid surroundings. If you travel in northern and western Rajasthan, to a more formidable desert region, it would amaze you. In fact, a kingdom flourished in the midst of the desert: Jaisalmer. This magnificent fort only comes into view when one is at the foot of the hillock on which it is perched. One is awed by its towering presence and as a traveller exclaimed, “Jaisalmer is a place that should exist only in the imagination ‌ The vision of Jaisalmer's 88 I JANUARY 2012
massive fort thrusting heavenwards out of the barren landscape is unforgettable, and the magic doesn't diminish as you approach its walls and bastions. This is a living fort, unlike many others that have become monuments in the true sense. Present residents inside the fort claim descent from forebears who arrived here in the 12th or 13th Centuries, after the fort was completed in 1156 A.D. The wealth of rulers came from the toll collected from camel caravans carrying merchandise that crisscrossed the Thar desert. Opulent palaces and havelis are a manifestation of that wealth. Old palaces are within the fort while havelis are located in the old township. Do not miss Nathmalji ki haveli, Patwon ki haveli and Salim Singh ki haveli. It will not be an exaggeration to describe them as symphonies in stone. Intricate carvings and exquisite filigreed work all over are indeed breathtaking. Both for adventure seekers and laidback leisure travellers a few kilometres beyond Jaisalmer, Sam is the destination point. After an hour's drive to Sam, one would be staring at the Sahara-like desert. The villagers

G&H of Sam have suddenly realised the power of tourism and many have turned into professional safari cameleers. Even a half-a-day safari into the vast, open, monochrome sand dunes is an evocative way to sample the desert ambience. Chittaurgarh is one of the largest forts in Rajasthan. In fact, inside the fort one can drive through to visit many monuments. Though some of the palaces within the fort are in a dilapidated condition, the other monuments are still in good shape. Do climb Vijay Stambh, a 37m tall and nine storeys high tower that offers a splendid view of the fort as well as the town below. Forts, forts and more forts! Is there any thing to see beyond forts? Plenty. Visit the world famous and now a World Heritage site called Keoldeo Ghana National Park or Pushkar, famously known for camel and cattle fair. Once a sleepy pilgrimage village with a rare Brahma temple and the pious visiting it during Karthik Poornima, it has blossomed into an international destination during this period. It
is not so much the religious sentiments that bring in tourists but the camel fair and the fanfare associated with it. Apart from camel or camel cart rides, tourists truly experience and enjoy rustic ambience. Siberian cranes, a rare and vanishing species, make a long haul all the way to Bharatpur's bird sanctuary, Keoldeo Ghana National Park. Winter is the season. There is an artificial water body created to attract ducks so that sahibs of the Raj era could indulge in duck shoots. That intention aside, today, it has become unwittingly a World Heritage site! While in Bharatpur a visit to Lohagarh, or iron fort, is a rewarding experience, although it does not match the grandeur of the other forts of Rajasthan. Forts were protective ramparts that rulers had in turbulent times in the past. There is plenty of art to be seen within these forts. The culture and cuisine evolves through centuries and Rajasthan has plenty to offer. A visit to Rajasthan is never mundane and always exhilarating. — Compilation and Photos: Nandu Manjeshwar JANUARY 2012 I 89
