Divorce and Finances

Stange Law Firm, PC Divorce can be tricky from a financial standpoint. The issue though is that when it is time to file for divorce, many make decisions based on emotions. While this is understandable, it is not necessarily the right thing to do from a financial perspective. In fact, just rushing through and signing off on paperwork now, can really come back to bite a person in the end. The divorce process can be quite complicated and emotionally draining. For this reason, many people walk into the process with the idea of getting everything finalized as quickly as possible. However, the truth is that -- while it may be hard to deal with -- it is better to take time with the divorce now, than regret the divorce settlement later. In terms of filing for divorce, make sure the filing is not just done as soon as possible. Rather, think about how a filing may affect things. For

example, let’s say a husband is a business owner. He plans on expanding that business a year from now. But, does he really want his wife to be able to get half of the expanded business in the divorce? To possibly avoid this, the advice would be to file for divorce right away and wait on the expansion until after the filing. Before a divorce is filed, now is also the time to think about any assets that should be separated. For example, if there is something a husband obtained in life before being married, he may want to keep it in his name and only his name. If it is in both names, while heading into divorce, it may be treated as marital property and divided up accordingly. Of course, these are just two things to consider. In our next article, we’ll look at the importance of remaining truthful in court from a financial perspective and how to deal with retirement accounts.

Economic mobility Most people are not even surprised anymore when they hear about someone who came here from Korea or Vietnam with very little money, and very little knowledge of English, who nevertheless persevered and rose in American society. Nor are we surprised when their children excel in school and go on to professional careers. Yet, in utter disregard of such plain facts, so-called “social scientists” do studies which conclude that America is no longer a land of opportunity, and that upward mobility is a “myth.” Even when these studies have lots of numbers in tables and equations that mimic the appearance of science, too often their conclusions depend on wholly arbitrary assumptions. Even people regarded as serious academic scholars often measure social mobility by how many people from families in the lower part of the income distribution end up in higher income brackets. But social mobility – the opportunity to move up – cannot be measured solely by how much movement takes place. Opportunity is just one factor in economic advancement. How well a given individual or group takes advantage of existing opportunities is another. Only by implicitly (and arbitrarily) assuming that a failure to rise must be due to society’s barriers can we say that American society no longer has opportunity for upward social mobility. The very same attitudes and behavior that landed a father in a lower income bracket can land the son in that same bracket. But someone with a different set of attitudes and behavior may rise dramatically in the same society. Sometimes even a member of the same family may rise while a sibling stagnates or falls by the wayside. Ironically, many of the very people who are promoting the idea that the “unfairness” of American society is the reason why some individuals and groups are not advancing are themselves a big part of the reason for the stagnation that occurs. The welfare state promoted by those who insist that it is society that is keeping some people down makes it unnecessary for many low-income people to exert themselves – and therefore makes it unnecessary for them to develop their own potential to the fullest. l ette r s t o t h e e d i t o r Tax dollars To the Editor: Numerous cities across our nation, including Wentzville, St. Charles, O’Fallon, Lake Saint Louis, Creve Coeur, and St. Peters have installed new internally lit LED street “name” signs. The signs look nice, are said to be visible from a further distance at night, give better guidance to motorists, and enhance a city’s image. They are said to have the same maintenance and life expectancy as the old metal reflective signs. In St. Peters they have installed 64 of these signs at 16 major intersections. The guidance and visibility arguments are mute points, because the city has installed signs, long before you could read the LED ones, telling motorists what street is at the next signal. These advance signs do more for motorist safety and guidance than the LED signs. The new signs, though efficient, do use electricity, $16 per year per light ($1,024 per year for 64; $10,240 over 10 years for 64 signs), before you consider loss of efficiency over time and any Ameren rate increases, like our recent 10 percent hike. At night if the sign goes out, as my wife and I experienced, or they lose power, you can’t read the signs at all. The people these signs might help at night are an insignificant number. According to St. Peters, 80 percent of the costs for these signs comes from grants from St. Charles County, the state of Missouri, and the federal government. Those tax dollars come from our pockets, too. Maybe this is a factor for why our governments are in financial troubles, and why MoDOT wants the Missouri legislature to pass a 10 year, 1 cent sales tax. The new signs cost $3,000 per sign. Multiply that by 64 signs for St. Peters, and the total comes to $192,000, plus the 10-year electrical cost of $10,240, for a total of $202,240. Now if the city had installed the old metal reflective signs in those same intersections, the cost would have been $250 per sign, for a total of $16,000. On all government levels, is this a wise use of our tax dollars? You decide. Then let your elected officials know. Jim Heim St. Peters

Sequestration To the Editor: The first truth about sequestration is that it was the Obama administration’s idea.

That is a fact he is now denying, but it is the truth. Jack Lew was the originator of sequestration when he was director of the office of management and budget later to become White House chief of staff. Republicans who tried to change sequestration in 2011-12 were accused by President Barack Obama of trying to derail his planned budget cuts. He said, “Already, some in Congress are trying to undo these automatic spending cuts. My message to them is simple: No. I will veto any effort to get rid of those automatic spending cuts in domestic and defense spending. There will be no easy off-ramps on this one.” The second fact that needs illumination is that sequestration does not cut the budget. It only decreases the amount of projected increases in spending. Let’s say that a federal agency’s 2012 budget was $100,000 and it was due to increase by 12 percent in 2013 to $112,000. Sequestration drops that to 8 percent or $108,000. A real budget cut would be cutting the $100,000 to $94,000. Neither news sources nor the politicians are being honest about sequestration. Is it any wonder the favorability of the media is only 6 percent. When a family cuts their budget because gasoline prices spike, they stop buying things they don’t really need and spend less than they did the previous year. Our government bureaucrats and politicians (Republican and Democrat) cannot seem to bring themselves to actually cut the baseline budget. They use gimmicks and lies to make everyone believe these cuts are draconian when they are anything but. At a recent news conference, the president repeated his oft used refrain that first responders, teachers and air traffic controllers would be fired or laid off jeopardizing all of our safety. He knows this is a lie, but repeats it as a scare tactic to instill fear in ill-informed and low-information citizens. To compound the problem, the lamestream media ignore the truth and help perpetuate the lies. Instead of bringing truth to the American people as they should, they forget about journalistic ethics in an effort to support the liberal political agenda. Every federal agency has seen monumental increases in their budgets over the past four years. The question we all need to ask the media is, “Why are you choosing to lie to America?” Jim Swann

News Br iefs St. Charles Trivia for a wall VFW Post 2866 Ladies Auxiliary will hold a trivia night at 7 p.m. on Sat., March 23, at 66 VFW Lane in St. Charles. Proceeds of the event will help fund construction of a memorial wall dedicated to fallen veterans of St. Charles County. The cost of $20 per person, which includes beer and snacks, is tax deductible. Food and snacks may be brought to the event. The event will also include a silent auction and 50/50 drawing. A cash prize will be awarded to the first place winner. Donations for the Veterans’ Wall may be sent to VFW Post 2866, 66 VFW Lane, St. Charles, MO 63303.

Cruisin’ for a cause Crider Health Center has partnered with Gateway Harley-Davidson and Mungenast Motorsports to host its Cruisin’ 4 Crider Poker Run on April 20. The event is a campaign to raise awareness about the stigma that surrounds mental illness. “Just like bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts, children and adults living with mental illness face the stigma of societal labels,” said Pam Imboden, marketing and development manager at Crider Health Center. “Often

We have a dedicated police department that is among the finest in the country, and a safe city that is an outstanding place in which to live and raise a family.” To determine the rankings, the 310 cities that were considered were first divided into three main categories by population: 500,000 residents, 100,000-499,000, and 75,000-99,999. With a population of 79,000, O’Fallon ranked third safest on the “Lowest Crime Rate Ranking” for cities with a population of 75,000-99,999. O’Fallon also was the only Missouri city to be rated among the top 10 safest cities in all population categories. “The men and women of the O’Fallon Police Department take pride in O’Fallon’s continued reputation as a safe city,” said O’Fallon Police Chief Roy Joachimstaler.

FHSD teacher turned legislator waits to hear his future in teaching his FHSD tenure, deny him future benefits, and possibly prevent his return to the district when his legislative work is finished. The events leading to this point originated in Spencer winning the House seat in November. Afterward, he requested an unpaid leave of absence from his position as a special education teacher at Francis Howell North High School, which the board rejected. Spencer — who has been with the district for 22 years — has not been in the classroom since Jan. 8 and began his House responsibilities the next day. Subsequently, the school administration recommended to the board that Spencer be terminated for “excessive absenteeism,” “willful and persistent violation of district policy and state law,” and “breach of district contract,” according to Cindy Ormsby, district attorney. Ormsby said that Missouri law prevents Attorney Alexander Kourbatov (left) sits with State Rep. Bryan Spencer during hearings held Spencer from serving in two state positions — March 8. Spencer said the district’s refusal to grant him an unpaid leave of absence contradicts its actions toward other teachers who have received leaves for a variety of reasons. “So many people had gotten approval (for a leave of absence) for so many different reasons,” Spencer said. In requesting the leave Spencer left open how long he might be gone and told the board that he planned to serve again if reelected. A House member can serve a maximum of eight years because of term limits. FHSD Superintendent Pam Sloan said that that length of time in the House is another issue. As a representative he would miss many weekly, monthly, and other scheduled professional development sessions that are necessary to remain up-to-date on education trends, resources, and instruction, she said. “It would be impossible to catch up after eight years,” Sloan said. Kourbatov responded that other teachers have been in the same situation but successfully returned to the classroom after their leaves of absence. Spencer also argued that his participation on four House committees that deal with education topics will keep him current. “I’ve learned more about (education) than I would as a teacher,” Spencer said.

O’Fallon Parks and Rec to adopt new rules on smoking, dogs and metal detectors By Mary Ann O’Toole Holley The O’Fallon City Council is considering tightening its park ordinance to add new restrictions for smokers, dog walkers and those who like to scavenge using metal detectors. No decision has been made, but fine tuning of updated park rules is expected to be completed and reviewed by the City Council in the next month. Parks and Recreation Director Cindy Springer presented the proposed changes to the council at a recent meeting. The council was surprised that the city needed an update in the ordinance to enforce metal detector usage and is grappling with the issue of how close smokers should be to other areas and people at the park. “Believe it or not, we have had a lot of people come in during the past year asking where they are allowed to use these metal detectors,” Springer said. “We found a need for some sort of a guideline for this activity.” Springer said the law would restrict the types of metal detectors used and limit areas where metal detecting can be done, and would require that the site be restored to its original condition. Under the proposal metal detectors could not be used where there is irrigation equipment, near flower beds and baseball fields, among other places. The Parks Board suggested that anything found valued at over $50 be turned into the city and treated as surplus. Springer said if someone were

to find historical artifacts, it would be important for them to turn them into the city. As for smoking, that too should be limited to certain areas, Springer said. “Smoking can become a very hot topic,” Springer said. “We are not asking to ban smoking in the parks, but restrict areas where you should not be smoking.” Springer said the city has received calls complaining about smoking near playgrounds, water play areas and spectator areas. She said smoking would also be regulated at special events or perhaps provided with designated smoking areas. “We have done a lot of research. We have cities where you can’t smoke within a park at all; others specify within 50 feet,” Springer said. “When we took a look at our parks, 50 feet would seem to work.” Springer said the Parks and Recreation Board asked that areas be designated for those who smoke. “If a parent brings a child to a youth athletic game and wants to smoke, they should still have the ability to watch their child’s game,” Springer said. “The designated area would be strategically placed to not bother someone, but still provide the ability to watch their child’s game.” Councilman Jim Pepper argued that the city’s no smoking ordinance indicates that someone may smoke 3 feet from a door where no one is smoking. Councilman John Haman suggested Springer return with a new smoking proposal.

City to resolve Westhoff Skate Park complaints By Mary Ann O’Toole Holley Noise and other issues surrounding O’Fallon’s Westhoff Skate Park is on the way to being resolved. O’Fallon Parks and Recreation Director Cindy Springer made a presentation to the City Council recently saying complaints from Diamond Point residents about noise and people cutting through area yards seems to be improving. “In February, the Parks and Recreation Board agreed to implement rules,” Springer said. “We have also planted 30 cedar trees along the perimeter of the walking path to create a buffer between the sounds of the skate boards and the residents’ property.” Trees have also been planted to block the areas used as a cutthrough, and the park ranger was stationed on the pathway for two weeks redirecting kids as they try to pass, Springer said. There were just about one or two groups of kids redirected, she said. Lights in the park have been tweaked to “redirect” light glare away from homes, and they have been manually turned off when snow and ice were found on the skating surfaces. Springer said generally lights are turned off at 9 p.m. In April, the lights will begin staying on until 11 p.m. “We will continue to monitor it and see how it goes,” Springer said. “We’re working to address the complaints, and it seems like things are going better at the park in recent weeks.” The skate park opened in November near TR Hughes Boulevard and Cool Springs Industrial Drive. “The park offers skateboarders, BMX bikers and inline skaters a great place to test their skills,” said Springer. “We anticipate that the public, including spectators, will get a lot of enjoyment out of the park.”

Circus coming to Family Arena

By Amy Armour Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! The Moolah Shrine Circus is coming to town from March 21 through March 24 at the St. Charles Family Arena. The family-oriented circus will feature many returning acts including tigers, elephants, trapeze artists and high wire performers. “(The circus will also include) the hilarious Moolah Shrine clowns, a highly popular dog act, quick change artists, and ladies on the high wire,” said Mark Rethemeyer, circus director. Two new acts will join the circus this year. Bears will entertain the crowd by riding bicycles and motorcycles. And motorcycle riders will travel up the Family Arena — on a wire. “They start on the floor and drive up a wire to the ceiling,” said Rethemeyer. Children will be entertained not only during the circus performance. “Before the show, during intermission, and after the show there will be face painting, elephant rides, pony rides, train rides, bounce house, and special photos,” Rethemeyer said. The 1 p.m. Sunday performance will include two special events. All Scouts are

The 1 p.m. performance is also a hearingimpaired performance. “In section 206, there will be sign language interpreters,” Rethemeyer said. Students on spring break can take advantage of special pricing for the 10:30 a.m. Friday performance. All tickets are reserved seats and all are just $6 each for this one performance. LSL aldermen give first reading to capital improvements sales tax By Michael R. Smith As expected the Lake Saint Louis Board of Aldermen at its March 4 meeting gave a first reading to a proposed capital improvements sales tax scheduled for voters to decide on the Aug. 7 ballot. The board was expected to give a second reading and vote on the matter at its March 18 meeting, after MRN press time. Proposition P, as the measure is being tentatively called, would add a half-cent sales tax to retail goods sold in Lake Saint Louis. The current Lake Saint Louis sales tax is 1.5-percent. The addition would bring the city’s sales tax to equal what O’Fallon and St. Peters have. The new tax would generate approximately $1.3 million a year and would be used for improving the city’s roads and parks. It would expire after 10 years unless voters

renewed decided to extend it. If approved the tax would go into effect next March, said City Administrator Paul Markworth. If approved, $900,000 a year from the tax would go toward road improvements and $400,000 would be slated for improving the city’s four parks. Markworth said city-issued bonds in 2006 that were used for road improvements “have been exhausted” and that “it would take $1.6 million to maintain the roads in the condition they are now.” “Currently the city has the ability to fund

street maintenance projects at $700,000 per year,” Markworth said. That funding level means LSL can replace its asphalt streets every 37 years, the concrete ones every 54 years. Markworth said the new funds would allow the city to replace its roads “much closer to our target maintenance cycle.” The recommended replacement period is every 15 years for asphalt roads, and every 30 years for concrete drives. When LSL had more residential building going on fees paid by developers helped maintain the city’s parks. As new home

building has decreased so have the funds for parks projects. One park project being discussed is replacement of the aging Founders Parks lights, which originally came from the old Sportsman’s Park when the Cardinals and Browns played there. “They’ve been there for a while,” Markworth said. One estimate for replacement was $500,000, but Markworth said, “We think we can get them done for less than that.” Other improvements to parks would include restroom upgrades and new trail construction.

Ambulance board candidate back on ballot By Michael R. Smith O’Fallon resident Arnie C. Dienoff is back on the April 2 ballot after St. Charles County Circuit Court Judge Ted House reversed his earlier decision keeping Dienoff from seeking a St. Charles County Ambulance District seat. Because of House’s new decision some of the April 2 ballots had to be reprinted at an additional cost to the county, said Election Authority Director Rich Chrismer. Dienoff was already a Ward 1 candidate for the O’Fallon City Council when he registered for a Ward 2 seat on the Ambulance District board. However, Chrismer interpreted state law to prohibit candidates from running for multiple positions in the same general election and removed Dienoff’s name from the Ambulance Board ballot. Dienoff disagreed and took his argument to the circuit court. On Feb. 18, House upheld Chrismer’s decision. Both the Missouri Court of Appeals and the Missouri Supreme Court refused to hear Dienoff’s case and sent it back to House who, on Feb. 25, changed his mind. House ruled that the law doesn’t apply with certain kinds of offices. Chrismer said of the judge’s reversal, “It’s very unusual. I have to abide by what the judge said.” Because Dienoff is running in the Ambulance District’s Ward 2 only those ballots had to be reprinted. Chrismer said that early estimates to reprint the approximately 28,000 ballots were about $20,000. The actual cost will be lower. “The total cost will be about $9,000,” he said. Dienoff was unavailable to comment on the judge’s reversal.

Teen turns ‘Sweet 16’ party into Children’s Miracle Network event By Amy Armour Mandy Ruhmann doesn’t want gifts for her Sweet 16 — she wants her guests to donate to the Children’s Miracle Network. “I thought of how blessed I am and that is when I started to think of all of the other kids out there that are not as fortunate as I am,” said Mandy, who is a sophomore at Fort Zumwalt West High School. “I began to think of all of the children that have cancer who do not have the opportunity to have a huge birthday party like me. I wanted to donate what would be my gifts to children in need.” Mandy’s grandparents surprised her recently with big plans for a Sweet 16 party this summer. She can invite 150 of her closest friends, and her grandparents will provide the venue, caterer and a DJ.

“I was so grateful that I got to have a night all about me with all of my family and friends there, too,” said Mandy. “Whenever I told people about the number of guests I am inviting, their response always has something to do with the amount of gifts I would receive.” So Mandy decided to turn her party into an event to benefit less fortunate children. “At first when she told me I felt surprised,” said Robin Ruhmann, Mandy’s mom. “Then I could tell how much it meant to her to turn this party into a charity event which made me feel very proud.”

Mandy and her parents researched local charities and came across the Children’s Miracle Network that supports kids in many different situations. “After talking to a Children’s Miracle Network associate we knew we made the right choice,” Mandy said. Mandy’s Sweet 16 Party is set for June 15 and will take place in Lake Saint Louis. “We are already so proud of her. She is the oldest of our five children and has always displayed a kind and generous heart,” Robin said. “She deserves to have

a party. She works hard for her family and works hard at school. I am happy that she gets to have this special day and very proud that she has turned this day - that should be about her - into a day about others.” Mandy carries a 4.2 grade-point average. Her dream is to get a Ph.D. in biology from Washington University and then go on to be a scientific researcher. In her free time, she likes to play music and write original songs. “My hope for this article is that my story will spread to inspire other teens my age to make a difference,” Mandy said.

Senior committee ‘going on the road’ By Mary Ann O’Toole Holley Councilman Bob Howell, the O’Fallon City Council’s liaison to the Senior Advisory Commission, said the Senior Advisory Commission is “going on the road.” Members of the Commission thought it was important to let senior residents know of the facilities, amenities and activities provided by the O’Fallon Senior Center, Howell said. In the coming months, Senior Advisory Commission members will be visiting area senior communities to discuss the benefits of the O’Fallon Senior Center. “We thought it was a great idea,” Howell said. “This is their first travel group, and we’re not going to call it an official Senior Advisory meeting, but want all interested seniors to learn what the city has to offer.” The first Senior Advisory road show will be at Park Place Senior Living Community, 2002 Boardwalk Place Drive, with more to follow. “These folks do a great job and we appreciate all the work they put into it,” Howell said. “As always, anyone who has any interest, please join. It’s a great organization with great people.” The O’Fallon Senior Center is located at 106 North Main St. and is open to residents age 60 or older they can socialize over crafts, billiards, dice, card games and other activities. Computer and fitness classes are also available, with hot lunch served for a donation of $3.25 per meal. Reservations must be made by calling the day before. The O’Fallon Senior Center is operated by the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging (MEAAA) and is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The menu and activities change daily. For more information or to reserve lunch, call the Senior Center at 272-4180.

‘A marriage is for life’: St. Charles couple celebrates 70th anniversary By Amy Armour A St. Charles couple credits “faith in God” for keeping them together for the last seven decades. Andy and Rosalie Schneider celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Feb. 27. “We prayed for a long life together, and we treated each other with love and respect. We worked together as a team in business and in our family life. Our faith in God kept us together for 70 years,” said Rosalie Schneider, 90, of St. Charles. The couple met at a dance in Dardenne Prairie in 1940 — and it was love at first sight. Seventy-three years later, the pair has been married for 70 years, had eight children, 17 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. “We couldn’t be more proud and thankful for our parents who have loved us all immensely and instilled the importance of faith, family, honesty and hard work into the Schneider family,” said Keith Schneider, one of their eight adult children on behalf of his siblings. “Their 70th anniversary is a wonderful moment for our whole family and an example and inspiration to others.” The Schneiders were married in 1943 at St. Peter Catholic Church, where they have been members since 1939. They have renewed their vows there four times throughout the years. Rosalie was born in Portage Des Sioux. Growing up, she earned $6 a week doing housework for local dignitaries. She attended Jefferson School at night to learn blueprint reading, aircraft assembly and sheet metal riveting which made it possible

for her to get a job as a riveter at Curtis and Wright Aircraft Company. She was often referred to as “Rosie the Riveter.” Andy and his family moved to St. Charles from Iowa when he was 11. Although he had been struck with polio as a child, he ignored his disability and worked as a farmhand as a teen, earning wages as low as 75 cents a day. Polio prevented Andy from being drafted during World War II, so he went to work for the highway department and then as a mechanic at Travis Motor Company. Eventually he was hired for the assembly line by Curtis Wright Aircraft Corporation and was promoted to shop foreman at age 23. Andy worked in sales for companies that included Meredith Publishing Company, The Kirby Company, West End Realty, Frontier Life Insurance and Missouri General Life. The couple has partnered not only in marriage, but also in business. The couple opened and ran the Gambles Store at 320 North Main St. in St. Charles in 1958. Both Andy and Rosalie earned real estate broker’s licenses and began investing in residential property in 1965. Many of their children have followed in their footsteps in the real estate business. A true partnership in all aspects of life has bonded the Schneiders for decades. The couple’s advice to newlyweds is to plan for forever. “Don’t take each other for granted. Get married with the intention of staying together forever – as marriage is for life,” said Andy Schneider, 90.

Francis Howell School District names Teacher of the Year April Burton has been named the 2013 District Teacher of the Year for the Francis Howell School District. Burton has been a member of the Francis Howell community for the past 11 years and is currently a French teacher at Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School. Burton was also selected as the 2013 FHC Teacher of the Year. Burton has embraced 21st Century Learning, core competencies such as collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving skills that students need to thrive in today’s world. One way Burton is incorporating 21st Century Learning in her class is through the use of Edmodo, an online collaboration tool. Utilizing Edmodo allows her students to practice their French language skills by posting messages in French for their partner class in Lille, France. Through this online collaboration, they have learned firsthand what life is like for a French high school student. To help her students practice their vocabulary, they created videos to show their partner class “friends” what American high school is like.

“There is great satisfaction when I see the sense of pride when a student has worked hard to earn a higher grade than before.” – April Burton For the past year, Burton has also successfully pioneered the flipped classroom in FHSD, a teaching model that inverts traditional teaching methods, delivering instruction online outside of class and moving “homework” into the classroom. As she has incorporated more collaborative learning activities into daily routines, her students are participating in activities that foster critical thinking, as well as creating artifacts that involve higher-level problem solving. Through the flipped classroom model she has seen improvements in her classroom, including a decrease in D’s and F’s and increased assessment scores. She has also observed that the classroom environment is more positive, which motivates students to be more engaged in the learning process. “I see no behavior issues. There is no boredom. Instead, students participate in meaningful activity,” Burton said. “When administrators visit my classroom, they see students who are holding each other accountable for learning. It isn’t a quiet classroom, but it is a class where students are sharing

opinions, learning to work with peers and participating in higher-level activities.” Through professional development opportunities, she has helped teachers in FHSD and across the country learn more about and implement the flipped classroom. Burton said she feels rewarded when she sees enthusiasm for learning and her students succeed. “There is great satisfaction when I see the sense of pride when a student has worked hard to earn a higher grade than

before,” Burton said. “There is such fulfillment in seeing the diligence involved with new teaching techniques pay off through improved assessment scores. But nothing is more powerful than when I receive an email or a visit from a former student, and he/she explains that I have made a difference for him or her.” In addition to her work with the flipped classroom, Burton has received numerous professional recognitions, attended countless professional development sessions

and is engaged in many aspects of the Francis Howell Learning Community. She has served as a Professional Development Committee Leader, as well as a member of the FHSD and FHC Technology committees. She is also a member of the Spartan Roundtable and FHC Greek Squad. Burton will be honored, along with all building Teachers of the Year, Howell of Fame Award winners, and District retirees at the annual Howell of Fame Awards Ceremony to be held May 6.

Bu llet i n Boa rd Francis Howell School grants student’s wish Students, faculty, staff and the entire Hollenbeck Middle School community came together to grant the wish of Jaci Griffin, a sixth-grade Hollenbeck student who is currently battling a brain tumor. Hollenbeck raised $11,270.35 to make Jaci’s wish of going to Disneyland come true, sponsored by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Hollenbeck set a new fundraising record by raising more money than any school in the state of Missouri for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. To raise money for the cause, wish bracelets and beads were sold, along with Jaci T-shirts, raffle tickets for a Hollenbeck embroidered hooded sweatshirt/T-shirt and doughnuts. The school hosted a facultystudent basketball game in February. Additionally, students had the opportunity to participate in a marshmallow toss during lunch periods in which students donated $1 to throw three whipped-cream covered marshmallows at a teacher. A student dodge ball tournament was held along with the activity “Manicures for Jaci,” in which students came to have their nails painted. On March 6 Hollenbeck hosted a schoolwide assembly to celebrate the school’s accomplishment with Make-A-Wish in honor of Jaci. St. Louis Cardinals mascot Fredbird and St. Louis Blues mascot Louie made an appearance to congratulate students on their hard work to raise funds for their fellow classmates wish and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Senior scientists Three students in the Francis Howell School District were honored at the annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Recognition Breakfast held March 8. Matthew Bries, a senior at Francis Howell North High School; Alexander Drury, a senior at Francis Howell Central High School; and Alexander Gambill, a senior at Francis Howell High School, were recognized for their achievements in science, tech-

nology, engineering and math. Bries, Drury and Gambill were nominated by educators for their extraordinary work in the science, technology, engineering and math fields.

Downs named principal The Francis Howell School District Board of Education recently approved Andy Downs as principal of Francis Howell North High School. Downs will begin his duties on July 1. He will replace Darlene Jones, who is retiring at the end of this school year. Downs has been an assistant principal at Francis Howell North for the past four years. Prior to that, he served as dean of students at Francis Howell Central High School. Downs began his career as an educator as an English teacher at McCluer High School in the Ferguson-Florissant School District, and came to the Francis Howell School District in 2005 as an English teacher at Francis Howell High School. Downs holds an undergraduate degree in English from Truman State University, a master’s of arts degree in educational administration from Lindenwood University, and an educational specialist degree in educational administration from Missouri Baptist University.

Student named state journalist Kelci Davis, a senior at Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School, was recently announced as the Missouri State Journalist of the Year with a surprise ceremony during her second-hour class on Feb. 25. Davis is the first student in FHC history to win the award conferred by the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA). According to Student Journalist of the Year judge, Rod Howe, Davis will be a great addition to the professional world of journalism. “Kelci Davis will be a welcome addition to the world of professional journalism because she is not afraid to show compassion for the subjects of her stories, whether they be insightful features, columns or photo essays. We already have enough cold, dispassionate journalists in the media wolf pack. Kelci’s portfolio

displays an impressive breadth of journalistic skills in photojournalism, design and writing,” Howe said. “Her words, visuals and photographs -- the heart-tugging images from a funeral ceremony come to mind - provide readers and viewers with messages they need to read and see to have a better understanding of and compassion for the unprivileged, and the victims of discrimination, bullying or war. Kelci is a fitting representative of all the excellence in Missouri scholastic journalism.” The Student Journalist of the Year Award is a highly competitive competition amongst the best student journalists from around the state. Davis will be presented with a plaque and given a chance to address the MIPA members at Scholastic Journalism Day on April 10. She will also be the Missouri representative to the JEA National Student Journalist of the Year competition, the winner of which will be announced on April 27 in San Francisco.

members, and shared the following letter: “In a day and age when our news is not much more than a daily highlight reel of the latest crime, disaster, or something done or gone wrong, I’d like to acknowledge and express my sincere gratitude to the faculty and the Holt High School administrators for showing this community what kindness and service is all about. Three weeks ago, understanding that a devoted mother to one of “their” special ed. senior students was about to lose her battle with cancer and would very likely miss graduation ceremonies at the end of the school year, they took it upon themselves to prepare and present, at our home, by her bedside, a private graduation ceremony complete with photos and graduation cake. It was a very special moment for us. I’m forever thankful to them for their kindness.”

Wentzville Graduation gift Graduation came home to Chloe Sherman, who attended Holt High School last year. After finding out that Chloe’s mother, Marilyn, had terminal cancer and would likely not make it to the graduation in May, Holt High School staff and teachers brought the graduation to her. Principal John Waters, assistant principal Amanda Shelmire, and teachers Stephanie Aubuchon and Eleyth Rowan-Domico decided that if Chloe’s mom couldn’t make it to graduation, they would take the graduation to her. “During a very difficult time for the family, we were all happy to help fulfill a parent’s wish and make a lasting memory for Chloe,” Shelmire said. The Holt staff brought cake, balloons, and a cap and gown for the in-home graduation ceremony. Less than two weeks after the visit, Marilyn passed away. “It was a tough thing, but I think that’s what schools need to do. We need to be personable and do things for our parents as well as our students,” said Waters. “It was tough, but it was beautiful at the same time.” Wade Sherman, Chloe’s dad, was very appreciative of the efforts of the Holt staff

A Trivia Night fundraiser will be held at 7 p.m. on Sat., March 23, at the Professional Firefighters of Eastern Missouri Banquet Center located 115 McMenamy in St. Peters. Proceeds will benefit Grad Night for Fort Zumwalt East High School. The cost is $160 for a table of eight and includes soft drinks and adult beverages. A cash bar is available, but no outside beverages are allowed. For more information, call Judy Prier at 485-0215.

Lindenwood Tuition increases Room, board, tuition and fees for traditional undergraduate resident students at Lindenwood University will increase 3.4 percent in the fall of 2013 to $22,940 per year from its 2012 level of $22,180 per year. Lindenwood’s Board of Directors approved the increase at its meeting last month. Lindenwood President James D. Evans said the increase is prompted by rising operating costs, some of which, the university absorbs. Students in Lindenwood’s accelerated evening program, LCIE, will see a 4.1 percent tuition increase in undergraduate tuition and a 3.9 percent increase in graduate tuition.

Season preview

By TIM WEBER The St. Louis Cardinals entered 2012 having endured a painful offseason that included the loss of a future Hall of Fame first baseman, manager and pitching coach – and they responded by coming within one win of a second consecutive World Series appearance. By contrast this offseason seemed relatively quiet, up until about a month ago when some key injuries to veterans threatened to derail the best laid plans of Redbird management. By most accounts, the Cardinals organization boasts one of the premier farm systems in baseball and 2013 may be the season when those long-term assets become near-term necessities. The Cincinnati Reds remain the strongest competition in the National League Central, with the Cubs and Brewers still rebuilding. The Houston Astros have transitioned to the American League, so 10 guaranteed wins a season have to be scratched off the Cardinals schedule as well. Overall, the Cardinals are poised to contend for a division title again and seem to be a lock on paper for a wild card berth at least. They may have the most formidable offense in the National League, but are going to have to rely on some young guns to continue their streak of going deep into the postseason. New Arrivals The Cardinals were so confident in their roster and farm system strength that their only significant free agent acquisition was left-handed reliever Randy Choate. While certainly not a flashy acquisition, Choate shored up the only glaring weakness the Cardinals had that they did not have an internal solution for. Choate is a quality

lefty specialist, and his real impact is that he instantly makes incumbent lefty Mark Rzepczynski more effective. Other additions include journeymen infielders Ty Wigginton and Ronny Cedeno. Wigginton is a bit of head scratcher as it seems his best days are behind him. He does add a bit of right-handed power off the bench and is a serviceable corner infielder. Cedeno is a decent glove in the middle infield, but has never hit very much at all. He was signed as an insurance policy and given the recent Rafael Furcal news, the Cardinals are going to need to cash in that policy.

of his potential at the end of 2012. Carp never recovered from the nerve damage that plagued him last season and is mulling retirement. The effect of this injury is two-fold. First, it opens up a spot for one of the Cardinals’ young pitchers in the rotation. Second, and of more concern, is that it places increased importance on the return of Jaime Garcia to the rotation. Garcia has great stuff, but some question his durability and mental makeup.

seems to be perennially underappreciated by Redbird nation, but every year puts up strong, consistent numbers. Carlos Beltran needs to stay healthy and would benefit from being less streaky than he was last year. For the pitching staff, Adam Wainwright assumes the role of staff ace following the injury to Chris Carpenter. Wainwright got stronger as the year progressed last year and is poised to resume total dominance in 2013. Jason Motte did an outstanding job in his first full season as the Redbirds closer, but has had a shaky spring thus far. Jake Westbrook is a consistent middle rotation starter who needs to continue to eat up a bunch of innings this year.

Holt wins Wickenheiser Cup By Jonathan Duncan The Wentzville Holt Indians reached the Promised Land in Mid-States hockey on March 4. However, that championship goal painfully eluded the Fort Zumwalt South and West girls basketball teams in their respective playoff runs. Courtesy of a clutch goal by leading scorer Corbin Foppe, the Indians secured their second Wickenheiser Cup trophy with a

heart-stopping 4-3 victory over Duchesne in the 14th annual Wickenheiser Cup Championship game at Scottrade Center. Foppe’s second goal of the night with 49 seconds left in regulation gave the Indians their second title in three years. Holt (18-84) defeated Rockwood Summit in 2011 for its other championship. “We knew at the start of the playoffs that we could possibly do this but we knew our work would be cut out for us,” Holt coach

Larry Sadowski said. “Once we got by the No. 1 seed Eureka in the quarterfinals, we felt like we had a great chance and the kids really buckled down after and did a great job getting us there.” In a wild first period that featured five goals scored Holt managed to grab the lead late in the first period as Austin Mossengren scored his second goal of the game with just 13 seconds left in the period to put the Indians up 3-2. That lead was short lived for Holt as the Pioneers had an answer in the second period. Just 1:15 into the second period, Joseph Rupp fired in a goal to knot the game at 3 for Duchesne (20-8-3). Then it was up to the Indians goaltending duo of Zach Burnett and Jacob Stewart to keep close and in striking distance. Burnett started the game and was steady but was replaced by Stewart in the second period. Stewart kept the Pioneers from getting any big scoring runs during the final 22 minutes of play. “I had told them they were going to share time if we got to the championship,” Sadowski said. “They shared time equally and both of them played really great.” In the final minute of regulation, Foppe did his thing. Foppe took a long lead pass from Mossengren and flipped in a shot under Duchesne goalie Ted Bunton to send the Holt fans into an unbridled frenzy. Foppe, who scored the Indians first goal late in the first period, finished the season with 41 points, 21 goals and 10 assists. Mossengren had two assists to go along with two goals. “Corbin and Austin really carried us this

Girls basketball While there was plenty of celebration for the Holt hockey team there was just disappointment left for the Fort Zumwalt South and Fort Zumwalt West girls basketball teams that week in state playoff action. Zumwalt South fell to Hazelwood Central 49-39 March 6 at UM-St. Louis in a Class 5 Sectional. The Bulldogs were down 21-15 at the halftime break and still had a chance into the fourth quarter but poor rebounding did in Zumwalt South as Hazelwood Central out rebounded the Bulldogs 41-25. Maddy German led Zumwalt South with 15 points. Fort Zumwalt South finished the season at 15-13. Zumwalt West had an even more heartbreaking finish to their playoff appearance as the Jaguars lost their Class 5 Sectional to Cor Jesu 55-50 in overtime at Lindenwood University on March 6. The Jaguars trailed just 33-32 after three quarters but outscored the Chargers 15-14 in the final quarter to force overtime with a 47-47 deadlock. In the overtime, however, Zumwalt West (16-13) went cold from the floor as Cor Jesu outscored them 8-3 to deny the Jaguars a second consecutive trip to Columbia. Zumwalt West was led by Lexie Moe with 17 points. Lianne Marquez scored 12 points and Jada Poland had 11 points.

New research suggests that a lifelong diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can inhibit the growth of breast cancer tumors by 30 percent.

Rethinking medical tests and procedures Medical specialty societies representing more than 350,000 physicians have released lists identifying commonly ordered tests, procedures or medication therapies they say are not always necessary and could cause undue harm. The lists were released last month as part of “Choosing Wisely,” a project led by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation that aims to promote patient-doctor conversations about the value vs. risk of various medical tests and procedures. The first list was released last April and included recommendations from

nine medical societies; 17 societies are represented on the new listing. Each society participating in the initiative identified five tests or procedures commonly performed within their area of specialty that should be questioned. For example, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advised against routine annual Pap tests in women aged 30-65, because in average-risk women, the annual tests offer no advantage over screenings at three-year intervals. “Twenty-five of the nation’s leading medical specialty societies have now spoken up and shown leadership by identifying what tests and treatments are common to their profession, but not always beneficial,” Christine K. Cassel, M.D., president and CEO of the ABIM Foundation, said in a news release. “Millions of Americans are increasingly realizing that when it comes to healthcare, more is not necessarily better.” The lists can be found online at choosingwisely.org. Another benefit of omega-3s Studies have associated omega-3 fatty acids with improved cardiovascular health, lower levels of depression, lower triglyceride levels, improved prenatal health and reduced inflammation associated with asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Omega-3s have been linked also with protecting against Alzheim-

er’s disease and dementia and with reducing symptoms of ADHD in some children. According to new research, a lifelong diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish oil and certain plant and nut oils, can inhibit the growth of breast cancer tumors. In a genetically engineered study, researchers at the University of Guelph in Ontario conducted a study comparing mice that produced omega-3 fatty acids and developed aggressive mammary tumors with mice that were genetically engineered to develop the same tumors, but not to produce omega3s. Compared to the mice not producing omega-3s, the omega-3-producing animals developed two-thirds as many tumors, and those tumors were 30-percent smaller. Professor David Ma, one of the study’s authors, attributed the difference solely to the presence of omega-3s and called the findings “significant.” Cooking up a stroke Research presented last month at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference suggests that a steady diet of Southern cooking is linked to a higher risk of stroke. Suzanne Judd, a nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Alabama Birmingham, shared results of a study comparing dietary habits of more than 20,000 adults aged 45 and older. Study participants resided in 48 states and answered telephone questionnaires about what kinds of foods they ate. According to the American Heart Association, researchers found:

• Stroke frequency was directly proportional to how much Southern food participants ate. • People who ate Southern foods about six times a week had a 41 percent higher stroke risk than those who ate it about once a month. • People whose diets were highest in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains (eaten about five times a week) had a 29 percent lower stroke risk than those who ate those foods about three times a week. FDA warns about codeine for kids The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning about giving codeine to children after they have had their tonsils or adenoids removed. According to the FDA, a survey identified 10 deaths and three overdoses associated with codeine use in children from 1969-May 2012, and many of the children were recovering from tonsil or adenoid surgery. As a result, the FDA will add to the drug label of codeine-containing products a new, boxed warning – its strongest warning – about the risk of codeine to manage pain in children after a tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy. Codeine is a narcotic that is converted to morphine in the liver by an enzyme, and some people have genetic variations that make that enzyme over-active, causing codeine to be converted to morphine faster and more completely than in other people. Such individuals are more likely to have higher than normal amounts of morphine in their blood after taking codeine, and high levels of morphine can result in breathing difficulty, which may be fatal, according to the FDA.

DO YOU WANT YOUR LIFE BACK? MAGGIE’S STORY Women should feel healthy, vibrant and strong throughout their adult lives. If you have been told “it’s in your mind” or “live with it”, read on. Maggie is a 43 year-old woman who presented to The Wellness Connection with a seven-year history of depression and fatigue, which developed after giving birth to her second child. She has a lifelong history of cold hands and feet and sensitivity to cold. She was experiencing significant hair loss, was constipated and had severe muscle aching. Even after sleep, Maggie never felt rested. Maggie had experienced recurrent sinus infections and headaches over the past seven years, for which she had taken antibiotics. She also complained of recurrent abdominal cramping and bloating associated with the ingestion of sugar and bread products which she craved. Since her last pregnancy, Maggie’s menstrual cycles had been irregular. She had gained 30 pounds over the past seven years and had difficulty losing weight. She had lost all sexual desire, and felt that she was in a “brain fog”. Maggie had sought the care of numerous physicians. They told her that she was “depressed” and prescribed her antidepressants. A friend of hers, who was a patient at The Wellness Connection, told her that there was a natural alternative treatment for her problems, so Maggie presented to us for an evaluation. Maggie’s name could be easily erased from her chart and replaced with the names of thousands of other women in midlife whom we have evaluated. The problems experienced by these women in midlife often stem from hormonal changes, especially a condition known as “estrogen dominance”. Estrogen Dominance: First let’s understand some basic facts. A woman’s ovaries produce three natural estrogen hormones and progesterone. The production of hormones slows over time so that by the age of 35, a woman’s hormonal production has dropped considerably. This decline can occur at any time, at puberty, after childbirth, birth control pills, or a hysterectomy. Progesterone, the “feel good” hormone, is the first hormone to decline and drops 120 times more rapidly that estrogen. Estrogen dominance does not mean that there are high levels of estrogen in a woman’s body; rather, it means that there is a progesterone deficiency, so that the estrogen hormones are not balanced. As progesterone declines and estrogen becomes dominant, symptoms such as breast swelling, uterine fibroids, fibrocystic breast disease, and migraine headaches occur. At menopause, the decline in estrogen leads to vaginal dryness, hot flashes, night sweats, as well as mood swings. The Effects of Hormones: The female hormones affect every cell in the body, including the brain. It is the female hormones which stimulate the brain to produce serotonin, dopamine, and neurohormones that elevate our moods. When estrogen and progesterone are out of balance, women often experience premenstrual symptoms, such as mild to severe mood swings, breast tenderness, fluid retention, headaches, irregular periods and breakthrough bleeding. When this occurs it is important to restore hormonal balance by reducing inflammation and toxicity, diet and lifestyle changes and biological hormone replacement therapy. In order to experience long term effects, proper organ function is necessary. Biologically identical hormones are identical in structure to those created by our bodies. On the other hand, drug company counterfeit hormones, such as Premarin, Provera and PremPro, are not identical and often lead to numerous side effects. If they were identical, then they could not be patented and therefore would prove less profitable. The Women’s Health Initiative Study demonstrated that counterfeit hormones cause serious side effects. Estrogen Dominance & Hypothyroidism: Thyroid hormones enable our cells to produce energy. estrogen dominance causes the liver to produce high levels of a protein, thyroid binding globulin (TBG) which binds natural thyroid hormone in the blood, preventing it from being used properly by the cells. This is often overlooked since routine thyroid blood tests taken by most physicians do not detect functional hypothyroidism. Some common symptoms and signs of low thyroid include fatigue, cold hands and feet, dry skin, decreased mental sharpness, depression, hair loss, sluggish bowel function and elevated cholesterol. Women frequently mention that their metabolism changed after their pregnancy, when they began taking birth control pills or when supplementing with counterfeit hormones. Hypothyroidism is often the culprit. Our goal is to enable our guests to enjoy a better quality of life by helping them obtain and maintain health and wellness naturally. This cannot be achieved by using antidepressants, because low blood level of Prozac, Effexor, Zoloft, or any other drug is not the problem. Good physical and emotional health requires hormonal balance. This can often be accomplished by replenishing the body with the identical female hormones that it had to begin with, not drug company counterfeits.

MAGGIE’S TREATMENT. Maggie had been made to feel by her doctor that she was a hypochondriac and emotionally inadequate. We explained to her that her symptoms were very common to women in her age group and were easily treated. She had an imbalance in her female hormones that adversely affected her body’s ability to use thyroid hormones. It was the change in her hormones that triggered her allergy disorder, which in turn led to recurrent sinus infections. The antibiotics which she had taken for her infections also killed normal bacteria in her body and allowed yeast overgrowth to occur. Maggie was prescribed bio-identical hormones based on the levels her test results indicated, natural thyroid and adrenal supplementation, and was treated for allergies with acupuncture and diet changes. Because our approach looked at the cause of the organ malfunction and imbalance, within two months, Maggie’s depression and fatigue had disappeared. She was able to discontinue her antidepressants. She told us, “I have not felt this good in years. Thank you for giving my life back.”

Young homebuyers are driving recovery Kevin Weaks

St. Louis home prices in 2012 rose for the first time in three years and posted their biggest annual gain since 2003. The Federal Housing Finance Agency's purchase-only index shows that house prices climbed 6.77 percent last year in the St. Louis metropolitan area, compared with a national gain of 5.5 percent. In the fourth quarter, prices climbed 2.51 percent in metro St. Louis and just 1.4 percent nationally. “Over the last few years, many young adults stayed on the sidelines while waiting for the overall economy and the housing market to stabilize,” noted Sue Crutchfield, senior vice president-loan administration for Meramec Valley Bank. Here’s what else is new in new homes: Select “Employee pricing” at Bridgewater’s Mill Crossing For a limited time, Tim Miller, president of Bridgewater Communities, wants to acknowledge police, firefighters, paramedics, health professionals and teachers by offering “employee pricing” for the purchase of a brand new condominium at Mill Crossing in Creve Coeur. Mill Crossing is conveniently located in Creve Coeur, just off Olive Boulevard. Prices start from the low $200’s for the two-bedroom, two-bath condominiums that range from 1,400 to 1,500 square feet and include 9-foot ceilings, hardwood flooring, granite countertops, marble whirlpool bath, gas fireplace, private laundry rooms and either a deck or patio. First responders, health professionals and teachers can receive additional information about the offer and take a tour of Mill Crossing by contacting sales manager Jane Peacock at (636) 299-8444. Payne Family Homes opens Willow Walk Estates Entered from Diehr Road, approximately a half-mile from Hwy. DD, Willow Walk’s O’Fallon home settings are arranged around two culs-de-sac, just a short drive from I-64/Hwy. 40. The majority of Payne’s 24 sites have daylight basements and back to common ground or woods. Stephanie Russo has been named sales manager for the community, which she describes as “perfect for homebuyers who want a quiet, country setting with all of the day-to-day conveniences close by.” Payne Family’s portfolio of fashionable home designs, priced from the low $200’s,

range from 1,700 to over 2,600 square feet. The plans were specifically chosen to capitalize on Willow Walk’s beautiful landscape. Special incentives are available during the grand opening of Willow Walk Estates. Call (314) 724-6226 for additional information. Directions to the community and more details are posted on the company website, PayneFamilyHomes.com. Griffey building inventory homes as Penny Lane closes out Griffey Homes is down to the last few homesites at Penny Lane, its community of attached and detached villas on Spencer Road between Mexico and Willott roads. Nearing completion is a new Windsor inventory home, priced at $242,000; breaking ground is a three-bedroom Nottingham attached villa, priced at $240,000; and in final close-out is Penny Lane. “We are at final closeout phase at Penny Lane with two detached villa homesites that will accommodate a three-car garage, one homesite that will take a two-car garage, and there are two free-standing homesites, then we’re finished here,” said sales manager Kim Valerio. At The Charleston at Heritage condominiums Griffey has two third-floor units with vaulted ceilings priced at $139,900 and one remaining garage left to purchase for an additional $15,000. “Our inventory home at Fieldstone Farms in O’Fallon is also nearing completion,” Valerio said. For information call (636) 936-1923 or email Kim at kim@griffeyhomes.com. Visit griffeyhomes.com for details. Ultimate options extended at Thomas & Suit’s Wyndgate Forest Spring is in bloom in a big way at Thomas & Suit’s Wyndgate Forest and so are the savings with the Ultimate Building Package extended through April 30. “We already are known for the many standard features that we include in our bases prices,” said Community Sales Manager Larry Nordlof. With the Ultimate Building Package, very home automatically will include a three-car garage, granite countertops, a wood-burning fireplace, 9-foot ceilings on the main level and hardwood floors in the foyer, kitchen and breakfast room. Good food and fun await at Krieger’s Sports Bar and Grill in Chesterfield By BETSY ZATKULAK Those who were disappointed with the closing of Krieger’s Sports Bar & Grill restaurants in St. Charles County can take heart, because just 15 minutes away in Chesterfield, the original Krieger’s is up and running with fantastic, fresh-made food and good times for all. “With the other locations closed around the St. Charles area, we want people to know you still have the opportunity to enjoy Krieger’s,” said Matteo Terzo, who in 2008 re-opened the original restaurant with co-owner Josephine Chirco. Growing up as childhood friends in West County, Terzo and Chirco have known each other most of their lives. They know the ins and outs of running a successful restaurant, too; Terzo owns Gianfabio’s Italian Cafe in Chesterfield also, and for 28 years, the Chircos owned and operated Chirco’s in Chesterfield. The owners take pride in what they do, never serving cookie-cutter, pre-made frozen food. “We’ve made great improvements since we took over because we went back to the basics, making everything homemade from the best products,” Chirco said. “We cut

It features an 8-ounce fresh chicken breast that rests for 24 hours in a house-made marinade before hitting the grill. Other classics include the signature French fries sprinkled with Chirco’s secret seasoning and her house dressing, which many customers buy by the bottle. Besides great food, Krieger’s has a reputation for great service, which comes in part from treating the staff like family. “I learned from my dad if you treat your employees like family, they’ll treat your guests like family,” Chirco Krieger’s offers fresh-made food in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. said. “By having employees that are here for a long period of time, they get to know the customers really “It’s a place where you can get a great quality meal before well. There are happy hour specials from 2-6 p.m., “There are restaurants that open and close left and right,” plus a late night happy hour seven days a week.
