Thank you for your continued support of all these people who have a vision of SHARING FOOD in the Tanana Valley and who have volunteered their time to do the work! The Fairbanks Community Food Bank receives free food and gives it away free.

The mission of the food bank is to collect local surplus food and give it to people who need it. We are primarily a volunteer agency and one-third of our volunteers are local students. In 2012 we collected and distributed over 2 million pounds of local surplus food using the labor provided by nearly 20,000 volunteer hours.

The 2013 Vision of the Board of Directors of the Food Bank:

45% of the people served in the food box program are local children.

• To have no one in the Tanana Valley die of starvation. • To have no child in the Tanana Valley go to bed hungry. • To provide food assistance to everyone who meets federal poverty guidelines.

Buy a Bowl and Help End Hunger Now! Please join us for an afternoon of art and community service.

A 15-year old girl entered counseling because her school counselor learned that she had access to a loaded gun and a rope, and had a very real intention of ending her life. Her parents were divorced; father was an alcoholic and mom was around but emotionally crippled and unable to show affection. She had a history of sexual abuse when she was young. She felt defective and unlovable. She had no friends and spent most of her time lying on her bed in the dark. During the first session she said “I just want a hug goodnight”. Our counselor worked with the girl and her mother. Two years later they were active in church, the girl was a volunteer at a shelter for abused children, at school she was on the student council and the newspaper staff. Now she is in college majoring in psychology so she can become a counselor and help others.

Samaritan Counseling Center has been in the Interior for over 15 years. All therapists are licensed. WHO WE ARE: Morning Star Ranch believes every person, regardless of physical or intellectual ability deserves the opportunity to fully participate in the community in which they reside. Morning Star exists to make sure that those with disabilities have that opportunity, thus enhancing their own lives as well as those with which they work. Morning Star also believes that by collaborating with other like-minded agencies, we strengthen one another, and become more effective in reaching our goals. Partnerships with great organizations like Camp Li-Wa, K-9 ABC Kennels and Equine, 4-H, and similar agencies make us all better at fulfilling our missions. It just makes good sense to utilize resources already available to the community. Morning Star also believes that by collaborating with other likeminded agencies, we strengthen one another, and become more effective in reaching our goals. Partnerships with great organizations like Camp Li-Wa with their modern barn, camp programs, and petting zoo; K-9 ABC Kennels and Equine and their participation with the development of the Fairbanks Dog Park; 4-H and gardening; and similar agencies make us all better at fulfilling our missions. It just makes good sense to utilize resources already available to the community. WHAT WE DO: Morning Star Ranch is a non-profit, Medicaid approved program that provides services identified by the Medicaid Waiver Service Program for persons experiencing developmental delays. Services include: Day Habilitation, Hourly and Daily Respite, Supported Living, In-Home support and Supported Employment. We endeavor to provide one-to-one service for all individual activities and commit to serve with compassion, consistency and care. We do this through educational activities, recreation, sports & leisure, individual and group activities like gardening, shopping, and meal preparation and clean up, arts & crafts, dining out, volunteerism, therapeutic animals, and a host of other indoors and outdoors activities.

WHERE WE ARE: Morning Star Ranch is conveniently located at 2757 College Road. Many readers may recognize that address as the former Dick and Jo Scott residence that hosted many local artists and musicians over the years. Many of these were youth, as this property was developed to serve as a youth camp as well and will serve the mission of Morning Star, enabling us to provide premier services to the community. Watch for our open house this spring and come join us in celebrating the good things that are happening for our special needs community.

Here are is what students and Parents have to say about their Experience at EKECCS:

On Mon, Mar 25, 2013 at 12:37 PM, Kris Dunlap <ravensintherafters@hotmail.com> wrote: My husband and I thought Effie would be a good way to transition our four children from the personalized home-school experience to public high school. We expected to want the wider array of options available at West Valley after their first year- but that never happened! I have never attended, heard of or experienced ANY public school that provides students what Effie Kokrine Early College Charter School offers. Every teacher in the school knows every one of my children personally, and takes personal interest in their success. For example: last year, one of my graduating son’s prior year teachers- who was neither currently instructing him, nor his advisor, contacted me TWICE during Christmas vacation to let me know that my son had certain unfulfilled requirements to get maximum advantage from the Governor’s Merit Scholarship Program. Wow. Three of my children have graduated with enough UAF credits to enter college with Sophomore standing. My two daughters are simultaneously earning Veterinary Certificates through a collaboration with the Interior Aleutians Campus. The school values family highly, so these accomplishments do not come at the expense of unbearable workloads, because credits earned for core curriculum classes at UAF also fulfill H.S. graduation requirements. For a great learning experience, you can’t choose a better school than Effie Kokrine. They competed in robotics, built (and kept) high quality computers, had wild snowshoe races, attended public meetings and interviewed elders and professionals, learned arctic survival, spent weekends at Howard Luke’s camp learning snow science, tracking, traditional games and skills, participated in FFA and Saturday Science club. The teachers and curriculum have improved from innovative to sensational in the past 6 years. The school teaches students responsibility to self, family and community. Opportunities and help are offered to each student at the level they arrive and are interested in attaining. The atmosphere is relaxed, supportive and encouraging- like a good family. My kids enjoyed high school- how many parents can say that?

21409373-nptab2013

“Two of my sons have had the amazing experience of learning in a culturally balanced and academically rigorous environment. The opportunities made available to them through Effie Kokrine are unparalleled and I highly recommend choosing this educational path for families seeking an excellent teacher-student ratio, post-high school preparation with dual credit course options as well as learning and implementation of traditional cultural practices that combined, deliver a well-rounded and positive educational experience.” Amelia Ruerup, Parent

About North Star Dance Foundation North Star Dance Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1980 to advance the art of dance in Interior Alaska. The foundation supports both dance EDUCATION through the North Star Ballet School and PERFORMANCE through the North Star Ballet Company. The foundationʼs activities depend on VOLUNTEERS and DONATIONS. The North Star Ballet School provides year-round movement education with highly qualified professional faculty to more than 200 students ages 4 and up. Offerings include an outstanding creative movement program for young students, a complete classical ballet curriculum, and classes in Pilates body conditioning. The school awards scholarships based on financial need, and a work-study program allows older students to mentor younger dancers. The North Star Ballet Company provides performance opportunities, arts enrichment, and entertainment with two major annual productions. For the holiday season, a full-length Nutcracker features roles for up to 80 local children. Nationally known guest artists frequently appear in the production, providing an opportunity for Fairbanks audiences to enjoy their singular talents. Each spring the Company produces a Spring Gala, featuring new choreography and works from repertory with a broad range of choreographic styles. With both productions, the company offers special discount performances for school audiences, reaching about 2500 children annually. The volunteers behind the scenes of North Star Balletʼs productions are second to none. Over 100 volunteers help with The Nutcracker every year. They build sets, sew costumes, move scenery, and ensure a safe and positive stage experience for all our dancers. And new volunteers are always welcome! The foundation relies on DONATIONS to maintain its programs. Ticket sales and school tuition combined cover only 50% of what it costs to provide: • A top-notch dance education for over 200 children and adults covering Creative Movement, Ballet, Pilates and more. • Quality entertainment for thousands of Fairbanks families • Professional-level performance opportunities each season for over 80 area children and ballet students • Over $160,000 in scholarships and work-study programs (since 1987). North Star has been recognized with many local awards, including the Mayorsʼ Award for Youth Arts in 2011, and an exhibit of its costumes at the Fairbanks Arts Association in January 2012. The Nutcracker was the Daily News-Miner Readersʼ Choice for Best Theatre Production in 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2012 (and runner-up in 2008 and 2010).
