Bay Turns Out In Force By Marian SAMPSON
THERE was a respectful hush, the trumpet sounded and the flags were lowered on the war memorial at Nelson Bay in recognition of Remembrance Day. Darby Munro who was born and bred in Nelson Bay is an ex-serviceman. He told News Of The Area, “I am wearing my father’s and my mother’s medals, as well as my own, my father served in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and my mother here in Australia, while I and my two brothers served in Vietnam.” Tom Lupton of the RSL collected dirt from Apex Park during the service which will go to the Sydney War Memorial and Museum in Hyde Park. Tom Lupton told News Of The Area, “Each sub branch from Port Stephens, including Nelson Bay, will collect soil from geo co-
ordinates which represent places where men enlisted to serve in WWI.” He believes that council will send the soil to the memorial in Sydney, which is being refurbished at present. The soil will go into tubes of which will be embedded in the walls of the memorial, sites have been selected from around the state to supply soil for the program representing the places that Australian volunteered from to fight in WWI. “We are working on getting the memorial steps in Nelson Bay repainted, they will be furnished with the emblem that most know as the rising sun, but the symbol is actually a representation of swords and bayonets defending the crown,” he said. If everything goes to plan, the work will be completed by Christmas. Kendall (Ken) Smith who

WE’D like you to meet Geoff Brown (Brownie). Geoff Brown is living the dream as a radio announcer, owning his own station, in a beautiful patch of paradise. Geoff’s radio career is one which spans states, with his voice having been heard at some very special times. In 1968 he started at Radio 2GB and one of the highlights of working within radio has to be the time he spent working with John Laws, the man with the golden microphone at 2UW. “He was the master, I learned from him every day, he showed me how to do things and he was terrific to work
for,” said Geoff. Geoff Brown told News Of The Area, “We have been broadcasting in Nelson Bay for nearly twenty years and in that time we have supported every charity and not for profit entity that has asked us for help.” For Brownie that’s part of being a part of the local community. “I’ve been at more stations that the Southern Aurora,” said Geoff. Locally Geoff has been a man who has served on many committees around the bay, as a past director and deputy chair of Port Stephens Tourism Ltd (now Destination Port Stephens), Nelson Bay and District Business Chamber (now Tomaree Business

The Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary was made possible through a $124,000 grant from the State Government Community Building Partnership which was supported by Kate Washington. Port Stephens General Manager Wayne Wallis said, “It is our job to work together with the community, to ensure the viability of Port Stephens koalas for many generations to come.” He believes the facility
when fully funded and developed has the potential not only to protect Port Stephens koalas but to create an international tourism drawcard for the region. “What is here now is only the tip of the iceberg,” he said. Tolley is just one example of the koalas, who will stay at the sanctuary which is based within Treescapes at One Mile Beach which is situated on Crown Land. President of the group, Taurie Lalor welcomed the guests and was MC for the morning. Guest speaker Melissa Histon, 2017 Newcastle Woman of the Year, was very inspiring. Melissa told of how her breast cancer diagnosis changed her life for the better leading to the formation of the Sista Code, an online community of 16,000 women who empower other women from around the globe. This year Melissa established the charity Got Your Back Sista which supports women in Newcastle area who have left violent relationships to set up their own home. Bev Apps the

The 16th In the Pink Breakfast is set down for 17 October 2018, but the year is not over for the ladies, with members of the group driving patients to Newcastle for treatment right up until Christmas time. Port Stephens Plans for Accessibility
By Marian SAMPSON
BEING accessible is important to communities, particularly those with a high level of older residents. Port Stephens Council has released its Disability Inclusion Action Plan. Emily Graham, Council’s Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator said, “The Disability Inclusion Action Plan outlines Council’s commitment to support the right of choice for people with a disability to live their lives with access to the same opportunities as all residents.” She believes that council is working hard to ensure
that residents and visitors to Port Stephens have access to facilities and services as well as social inclusion. “Everyone has the right to enjoy the benefits of living and working in Port Stephens.” The plan is designed to achieve positive change and create a more inclusive society, no matter what the individual’s background or abilities are. “Becoming a more socially inclusive, accessible and liveable place will benefit everyone in Port Stephens, particularly the more vulnerable people in our society such as young
children or our ageing population,” she said. Di Lambert, who uses a mobility scooter in the Bay, told News Of The Area, “The Nelson Bay town centre is accessible, however near St Michael’s Primary School, the footpaths are not suitable for mobility scooters.” She believes that town is quite accessible with the new Woolworths and entry to the Seabreeze Hotel being very accessible. “I find that there is a general courtesy towards older people here in the Bay,” she said.
The simple fact is you can’t ensure that it will go smoothly. When you put a group of people with the same genetic flaws in a confined space for seven hours and then you add alcoholic punch, estranged Uncle Phil, a Secret Santa where the maximum outlay is $50, Mariah Carey singing ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ and an undercooked turkey, you have a recipe for disaster. Add a faulty remote-control car, a drone that gets stuck in the jacaranda tree, bon bons that contain hazardous choking items, surly teenagers, a friendly game of table tennis that turns hostile, and granny falling into the pool after one too many shandies. How can you relax? How about we throw in a dog that urinates on the Christmas tree (and all the presents underneath), a dishwasher that groans under the pressure and dies, great grandad Maurice (who also groans under the pressure and dies), a maxed-out credit card and more landfill than anyone knows what to do with. I know a family who has this whole Christmas caper worked out. They put out an open invitation telling everyone they will be at the beach. If anyone want to come along, they simply need to turn up with their own chairs, their own grog, and a plate to share. Presents are banned. They sit around under a shady tree with zero stress, zero cost apart from the usual costs associated with a picnic, and, once lunch is over and the chicken bones are in the bin, they just loll around on inflatable toys. Smart, hey?
Carpe diem, Jasminda

More Than A House
By Marian SAMPSON
THE bright yellow weatherboard in Nelson Bay is more than just a house. It is a safe haven for women escaping from domestic violence. The facility is managed by the Yacaaba Centre and is funded by The Rotary Club of Nelson Bay, Soldiers Point Marina and State Government funding obtained through the Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington. The units have been designed by Daniel Reitsma, who won a Westpac design award for the small dwelling units. When the two new units are open the site will house five women with another unit planned for the future. Lynn Vatner of the Yacaaba Centre told News
Of The Area, “The housing offers homes for women who have been living in a domestic violence situation.” She believes it is particularly difficult for older women to start all over again. “Staying in the house offers a safe haven where the women don’t have to worry about money, the aim is for these women to move into a situation where they are independent after they have recovered from trauma,” she said. Darrell Barnett of Soldiers Point Marina said, “We are very proud to be able to assist in funding this project which helping people in a time of great need in their lives.” He believes that the space and time that staying in the facility provides is critical in providing relief and support to women escaping from
domestic violence. “Soldiers Point Marina believes that as a part of the community we live and work in, it is our responsibility wherever possible to help those most in need,” he said. Kathyrn Rimmer President of the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay said, “Our Club has been assisting various community organisations for the past 63 years. “We’ve raised over $36,000 for this project which is another example of the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay making a difference in our local community,” she said. It is hoped that the two new small dwelling homes will be opened in January with Yacaaba Centre hoping for donations from the community to provide various homewares.
Duffy The Sea Turtle
By Sarah STOKES
SHOAL Bay locals, Ellie Jackson (Author) and Liz Oldmeadow (Illustrator) have something to be proud of with the release of their charitable book, ‘Duffy’s Lucky Escape’. Ellie is an ex-Geography teacher and Environmental Sciences graduate whereas Liz is a multi-award winning illustrator and photographer as well as a graduate in Natural History Illustration.
The idea was born when Ellie and her family moved to Magnetic Island in Queensland for a year when her children were small. Whilst living in this idyllic location, they took part in a turtle release which was the springboard for the book. A trip to the Turtle Hospital on the mainland educated them about why turtles are in need of our help with one of the main reasons being their consumption of too much plastic.
q Ellie Jackson with a copy of the book Photo by Ian Jackson
Ellie found she was amazed when her children began picking up plastic on the beach and by how readily they had understood the message. The book’s content is delivered in a fun and friendly way that inspires children to make changes to their own and their families’ lives. The book is available by going to www. duffytheseaturtle.com at a cost of $14 plus $10 postage. Negotiations are in hand to also sell the book through Take3fortheSea an Australian organisation dedicated to marine plastic reduction. Any interested stockists are urged to make contact through the website. The book is raising money for UK, Australian and international marine charities. Having been read at Shoal Bay Public School to the Year 2/3 students, teacher Jacqui Perry, told Ellie, “The children loved it. It’s beautiful and fitted really well with our Geography topic on sustainability.” Other schools and preschools in the area also have copies they are using with the children. Ellie told News Of The Area, “I am so excited to see the children’s reaction to the message in my book.”

Must-Try Outdoor Activities
PORT Stephens Council is encouraging visitors and residents to take advantage of the warmer weather and get active outside with boot camps, kayaking and even a splash park on offer this summer. A range of businesses will operate on Council managed land across Port Stephens this season, offering both tourists and locals the opportunity to get healthy and have fun in the outdoors. Ian Crawford, Council’s Contract and Services Coordinator, says he’s excited for the new and interesting activities on offer. “One of the main attractions this summer is the addition of the Splash water park at Nelson Bay, which is essentially a giant inflatable obstacle course floating on the water!” Mr Crawford said. “We’ve also got see-
through kayaks, water bikes, paddlesports, surfing, mountain bikes, soccer and fitness operators across the LGA, so there’s really something for everyone to enjoy. “Jump on our website to
see all the fun activities on offer, or head to our Visitor Information Centre to find out more and make a booking,” he added. Mr Crawford says commercial operators play an important role in Port Stephens.

The Brown Bull
By Rachael VAUGHAN
SATURDAY 18 November at Tea Gardens Country Club, you will see the band The Brown Bull, at 7:30pm. The Brown Bull are Dave Bull on Vocals/Guitar and
Chris Buchanan on Vocals/ Guitar. The guys belt out pub rock classics and their on stage antics and humour are set to win punters over and have them singing with the boys all night long.
David and Chris have years of experience playing in covers and originals bands in Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney and are ready to rock your venue, party, wedding or corporate function.

q The Brown Bull are ready to rock. Their big sound comes from great vocals and vocal harmonies, extraordinary guitar playing and big bottom end foot stomp beats. Their repertoire includes: The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Traveling Wilburys, INXS, The
Screaming Jets, Tonic, Foo Fighters, Mental as Anything, Dragon, Stevie Wonder, Aussie Crawl and many more classic favourites from the 60s to now. Dave told News Of The Area, “We’re looking forward to our gig at the Tea Gardens
Country Club, and hope to see some familiar faces, but lots of new ones too!” “Plan a night out with friends, come on down to the country club and get ready for a night of toe tapping tunes.”
