Cooper Kicks On
By Marian SAMPSON
COOPER Aitchison is a player in the Nelson Bay Junior Rugby League Club. Last year he played in the under 6s team, with 11 other junior players and Cooper and his team featured in a video. Cooper’s mother Samantha ScanesKeith told News Of The Area, “Cooper loves his football, when you see him on the field you would never guess that he
was born at just 27 weeks.” It really is a case of wow look at me now. Cooper was first introduced to News Of The Area readers when he started school last year, since his rocky start in life, he has gone from strength to strength. Cooper’s mother believes that Cooper is the perfect example of a premature baby that has gone on to

ANZAC Day is nearly here, and Port Stephens is set set and ready to host another year of moving Dawn Services and parades to commemorate this very special day. Schools have already acknowledged Anzac Day early in heartfelt and respectful services across Port Stephens, as Anzac Day this year falls during the school holidays. Warrant Officer Chris Whittington attended one such service in Medowie this year, and told News Of The Area, “The Catafalque Party and I are honoured to attend these services.” “They are always so thoughtfully
organised and well received.” The Medowie sub-Branch of the RSL will be holding a Dawn Service and march on 25 April. The march will commence at the Bull and Bush hotel car park at 5.45am, and finish at the Lions Memorial Park. The service will be held at Lions Memorial Park, starting at 6am, and concluding around 7am. Lions Park is at the corner of Medowie and Ferodale Roads, just opposite the Medowie Woolworths car park. live a normal life, he is in class at school, plays football and rides a motorbike. While Cooper wears a mouth guard and head protection while playing Rugby League with the team he certainly isn’t being wrapped in cotton wool. Just one of the team, Cooper is often heard encouraging all the players calling out “come on girls and boys.” “Cooper has learnt team spirit, respect, courage and responsibility along with rules and ball skills through being a member of the team with Nelson Bay Junior Rugby League.” Cooper has scored successful tries, and in one game even scored five times. “I couldn’t be a prouder mother,” she said. Cooper is playing in the Junior Rugby League once again this year in the under 7s team for the Nelson Bay Junior Rugby League and is in year 1 at Shoal Bay Public School.

A Right Royal Occasion By Marian SAMPSON
THE Nelson Bay VIEW Club is celebrating the upcoming Royal Wedding is Style and you’re invited to be a part of it, right here in the Bay. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could never have imagined that in beautiful Nelson Bay, so far from Buckingham Palace, a Hen’s
Party is to be held to celebrate their 19 May Royal Wedding. Patricia Gibson of the Nelson Bay VIEW Club Told News Of The Area, “To honour the forthcoming nuptials, the Nelson Bay VIEW Club will be hosting a Royal Gala Concert with afternoon tea, at 2pm on Saturday, 5 May at the Community Hall in Norburn St, Nelson Bay.”
Walk for FA Awareness
By Marian SAMPSON
THE teachers and staff of St Philip’s Christian College at Salamander Bay are getting set to raise awareness of the rare genetic condition, Friedreich’s ataxia (FA). At this stage, 50 staff with over 40 walkers will tackle a 32km walk down Stockton Beach on 24 March. They will be joined by the family and friends of Charlotte, one of their primary students who has the rare genetic condition FA. Charlotte’s family were unaware that their genes could result in a child with FA. Scott Sinclair one of
Club, with ‘Gunfire Breakfast’ to follow in the Club for a gold coin donation. The Tilligerry Commemoration Service will commence with a march at 9:40am from the Avenue of the Allies in Tanilba Bay, over to
the teaching staff organising the walk told News Of The Area, “We expect the walk to take around eight hours. Practise walks of half this distance indicate that an 8 hour finishing time is very realistic.” The walk is to raise awareness and will precede a black-tie fundraiser which will be held later in the year. The aim of these events is to raise vital funds for research and clinical trials which at the moment are delivering great hope for those with FA. Tickets for the dinner will be available soon and include a meal with drinks package and entertainment on the night. The evening event is planned for Friday 18 May. One of Charlotte’s past
teachers Tiffany Cashen told News Of The Area, “There is new hope for a cure for FA. The funds raised will go towards a cure which is not a matter of if, but when.” Charlotte knows that FA is impacting her balance and coordination and has the potential to cause Cardiomyopathy. “She is a creative student and very thoughtful of others, she is a nurturer with great resilience,” she said. The group has already raised $7,000 ($8000 now) towards the cause and are hoping to raise much more to aid in research and a cure for FA.

Because both Ms Markle and Prince Harry are renown for their support of various charities, they will be delighted to learn that proceeds from this Hen’s Party will go towards supporting disadvantaged children with their education ( through The Smith Family ‘Learning for Life’ initiative). The club has chosen to celebrate the wedding as they see the couples support of charities as in line with the VIEW Clubs charitable work which supports 10 students through the Smith Family ‘Learning For Life” program, funds raised from the event will go towards this initiative. Teatime Get Together By Marian SAMPSON
TEATIME can be a great time for a good old fashioned gossip and that’s exactly what some of the ladies from the Fingal Bay Probus Club get up to when they have an afternoon tea gathering. Julia Redlich of the Fingal Bay Probus Club told News Of The Area, “These gatherings are held in a member’s home and it is one of the nicest ways for new members, and visitors to
make friends in a slightly quieter ambience than the cheerful crowded general meetings.” She believes that sitting comfortably with a cuppa and delicious nibbles in front of the people, it doesn’t take long for an exchange of views, family news and quite often this is when “six degrees of separation” are discovered. “No wonder fellowship, fun and friendship flourish!,” she said. A new member, Dulcie Ridley, was a recent hostess, and these gathering are held regularly for

Marriah Band at the Tea Gardens Hotel By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE owners of the Tea Gardens Hotel, Ben and Emily Hanson, have already made a good impression on the community in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, after only a year of owning the Hotel, and making some great changes. This weekend, if you’ve never been to Tea Gardens, this is the weekend to plan a trip up North to try it out. Friday night there is a kids disco at the Hotel, with party food, fun games and tunes for the kids to have a ball while the adults kick back in the restaurant and bar and enjoy a meal.
Tea Gardens Hotel are becoming well known for their top quality, fresh cooked foods. You can enjoy a variety of meals, from their fish cones and great steaks, to pizzas and gourmet pies. On saturday night, come along and enjoy ‘Marriah Band’ as they cover all the classics. Marriah’s high energy riff driven rock echoes influences from Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Cold Chisel, Divinyls and the Gunner’s, plus many more favourites from the 70’s and 80’s as the foundation of their repertoire. Annie Cee, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist from Marriah Band, said, “Possessing an
extensive and varied rock pedigree, we came together four years ago and have been gigging country/city and up and down the coast ever since.” “We deliver a high energy packed show, and will have you rockin’ out with our infectious sounds for a night to remember.” Marriah Band is Annie Cee on lead vocalist and rhythm guitar, Scott Grice on lead guitar and back up vocals, Paul Job on drums and percussion, and Wayne McCrae on bass guitar, vocals and on stage sound. Marriah have a diverse repertoire that is guaranteed to make for a great night out.

Women Who Sail
By Marian SAMPSON
THE third annual Women Who Sail event was held at Broughtons at the Bay 6-8 April 2018 in the lead up to Sail Port Stephens. Women sailors from
around Australia, New Zealand and the United States attended the gathering that was open to all women interested in boating. Guest speakers this year included solo Antarctic circumnavigator and world
record holder Lisa Blair; wellknown sailing bloggers Viki Moore (NZ) and Amy Alton (USA) and sailing personality Nic Douglass. The founder of Women Who Sail, Charlotte Kaufman from the United States discussed her family’s
dramatic rescue at sea, which caused an international media firestorm about sailing and parenting. The event had interesting sessions including yoga for yachties, diesel maintenance, coastal navigation, marine debris, splicing, a South
Seas forum, provisioning, marine insurance, weather, and the launch of SisterShip Magazine for women on the water. The presentations and workshops were for women only, but Marine Rescue Port Stephens also ran a training

and refresher day male partners. Paul and Frances TudorStack from Eyeglass Assist were the guest speakers at the dinner function where they shared their experience of sailing with a purpose, including voyages to Indonesia and the South China Sea, and their latest project for Eyeglass Assist to the Solomon Islands this year. Optional events included sailing lessons at Soldiers Point Marina, a day long sea safety and survival course, and a sunset dinner cruise. Many of the women attending the event are staying on in Port Stephens to take part in the Sail Port Stephens regatta. Carmen Holden of Soldiers Point Marina who were event sponsors told News Of The Area, “Women Who Sail Australia events are open to all women who sail or are interested in sailing, it’s a great opportunity for women to engage with others who participate in the same sport.” For more information about Women Who Sail email womenwhosailaustralia@ gmail.com
