TURNING sweet 16, the ladies of the Purple Feathers of Anna Bay celebrated in style at Fingal Bay Surf Club overlooking the beautiful coastal waters of Fingal. Founding member, Queen Helen Young, came across the Red Hat Society whilst on holiday and thought it would be wonderful to create something locally. The Red Hat Society Inc, describes it as ‘a playgroup for women, created to connect like-minded women, make new friends and enrich lives through the power of fun and friendship’. Creating much attention from onlookers, the ladies gather monthly, proudly displaying their red hats and purple outfits,. Tracy Sammut said, “We build lovely friendships

When the group first started out, they would buy their hats from Vinnies and paint and decorate them, “It’s part of the fun,” said Helen. The ladies travel to meet other Groups both locally and further afield, they are limitless in their opportunities and zest for fun and adventure. With ages ranging from 59 to 90, Helen said, “We pride ourselves on getting old disgracefully.” Part of the reason the Red Hats are so popular is because they welcome new women to the area, where they can have an immediate Group of ladies they can rely on for fun, frivolity, food, friendship and flexible friends. The ladies are keen to meet other ladies who would like to enjoy a day of getting dressed up and having fun. For more information contact Helen on 0468 774 417.
“Many of us may take our Australian citizenship for granted, but we should never underestimate what a defining and life-changing choice it can be,” she said. the tutelage of the Robyn Yvette Dance Centre and that the Bay certainly has great talent and ability to train competitive dancers with wonderful technical merit. Lance Woods for Robyn Yvette Dance Centre told the News Of The Area, “We are so proud of Josie and her

achievement at the Royal Academy of Dance Awards, and of course our other dancers who also competed on the same weekend at the
Ooh La La Dance Eisteddfod at Salamander Bay.” He believes that the achievements from the Eisteddfod were simply excellent. “The local Bay dancers took out 1st Place in the 14/ Under Jazz, Variety, Modern and Classical Groups; 1st Place in the 12/Under Variety, Modern, Classical groups; 1st Place in the 10/ Under Classical and Jazz groups; and a second place in the 12/Under jazz groups,” he said. YOUTH week is coming, but the youth of Port Stephens is constantly on the minds of several Organisations based in the Bay, all of which operate all year round to support local youth. Recently the youth focused Charities and support Groups held a joint meeting to ensure that shared knowledge and resources would serve our local youth well. In attendance were Caring For Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) who are developing programs and support in the area of mental health outcomes for youth; CDAT the Port Stephens Community Drug Action Team; Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network (PSSPN); Tomaree Youth Community Action Group (TYCA); Ability Links; The Dara Van that provides food to the homeless or those who are finding it hard to manage financially; and the
Real Futures Foundation which support local youth at risk of disengagement with education while creating positive career pathways. John de Ridder, of COPSY, told News Of The Area, “High on the agenda for COPSY is to engage a youth focused Clinical Psychologist, the goal is to find a passionate individual with experience working with young adolescents.” COPSY is aiming to provide an accessible, available and affordable youth mental health service. He and others within the community believe this is a high priority for our local youth as distance and transport often sees them disconnected from services when they need them most. “The services will be available quickly rather than young people being placed on long waiting lists and they will be free to high school students. “This initiative will see services available within the community with youth no longer

Pennant For Point Bowlers
By Marian SAMPSON
SOLDIERS Point Women’s Bowls Team has taken out a
district pennant and will proceed to the regional finals at Aberdeen. Throughout NSW
each year Pennant Teams comprising of 2 teams of 4 players, contest four Pennant Flags.
Soldiers Point Bowling Clubs No. 4 Pennant Winners for the Newcastle District will compete at the same
tournament as the Fingal Bay Women’s Bowling Team however they will not compete against each other.
Please support the advertisers within the Bay News Of The Area as they are bringing you your local news each week.
Soldiers Point Women’s Bowling Club have won at Newcastle District level two No. 1 Flags, two No. 2 Flags, one No. 3 Flag and now a No. 4 since 2000. Lorraine Cloke of the Soldiers Point Bowling Club told News Of The Area, “So far none of those teams have progressed past the Regionals. “Hopefully this year will be different.” Lorraine believes that there is a misconception that Lawn Bowls is a Seniors Sport. She feels that it is also a young person’s sport which older people can play very successfully. In the No. 4 team the players ages range from 60’s through to 80’s. “I personally, over my 38 years of bowling have made many great friends as well as enjoying the great game of Bowls which is a lot more complex than it appears,” she said. Bowls is a sport that is not only competitive, it is great exercise and is a very social activity. The Soldiers Point Women’s Bowling Club also support many charities, including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, The Mater Oncology, and breast cancer and the prostate charities.
