Wakakirri Win By Rachael VAUGHAN

MEDOWIE Public School came away with two impressive awards at the recent Wakakirri Story and Dance Festival, held at the Civic Theatre Newcastle on 27 July, 2018. The staff and students worked tirelessly over ten weeks, preparing a unique and inspiring story through dance, with the assistance of Kiah Muddle from iDance Performance Co. Kiah worked with the students to develop the story, and outstanding choreography, so that Medowie Public School’s story-dance, entitled ‘Believe’, was uniquely presented. Medowie Public School’s story ‘Believe’, begins in a modern-day classroom, where students are discussing what they want to be when they grow up. A young Aboriginal woman feels as though her identity is lost and is torn between her family’s cultural beliefs and her own aspirations, and through the support of her peers, teachers and school she realises that she can be the person she wants to be and stay true to her cultural values. Students embark on an emotional journey and work together to highlight how important it is to build each other

This change in attitude has grown over the past few decades, as written about by the now former Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government (ACELG) in 2012. Rate payers commonly now expect their local Council to provide sporting grounds and facilities, cultural services, funding for not-for-profit groups, libraries, community award services, recreational facilities, as well as the traditional roads and rubbish type services.

Local councils have also increasingly been involved in political matters outside of their traditional bailiwick, as seen in recent Australia Day citizenship debates and last year’s marriage equality survey. Port Stephens Council recently released a proposal with four options for a Special Rates Variation (SRV) rates rise program to take place over the next seven years. With the recent planned but defeated council mergers still fresh in residents’ minds, the news of a rates rise proposal has caused some anxiety in the community. First term Councillor for the West Ward Mr Giacomo Arnott is leading the populist argument against any rate rise, arguing that, “Council needs to be financially responsible and live within its means.” Whereas Councillor and Deputy Mayor Mr Chris Doohan is asking residents to look at the bigger picture, telling News Of The Area,

a question related to the performance. The students selected to do this from Medowie Public School were Ellie Winter, Mindy BeerStewart and Shanay Dawson. At the end of all the performances Medowie Public School was very honoured to take home two Awards ‘Best use of minimal props’ and ‘Best individual hair and makeup’. National Awards are announced on Waka TV during September, so keep an eye out to see if Medowie is warded any further Awards at National level. Pitching for a Regional Park By Marian SAMPSON

ANNA Bay may look like it lacks a little love but residents of the area are keen to see improvements. Not the least of which is they are pitching for an ‘All Abilities’ Regional Park for Anna Bay. Coral Kearins spoke passionately at the July Council Meeting to gain support and funding for the project. The vision is clear, the Park will have passive and active play areas and will help alleviate the need for recreational space created by the manufactured home villages which are currently being developed in the area. Coral Kearins said, “This will be a Park that we will visit again and again, bringing

happiness and harmony to the community.” In her presentation, Coral shared success stories of other councils to gain significant funding for regional parks including Muswellbrook and Port Macquarie. She believes that an ‘All Abilities’ Regional Park at Anna Bay will assist in building social cohesion and that the park could be funded through the Regional Growth Fund. Councillor Doohan addressed the elephant in the room, asking the costs of the proposed park which will run somewhere between $5-6 million. Councils position on the possibility of the park was that they would need to invest significant funds in the region of $30,000 to $40,000 to make

Firies Climb By Rachael VAUGHAN

A GROUP of local volunteer firefighters are putting in the hard yards to raise money for a very worthwhile cause. Firefighters from Medowie and Raymond Terrace Rural Fire Brigades will be taking on the 1504 steps located inside the Sydney Tower Eye to raise funds for and awareness of Motor Neurone Disease on 20 October. To put the climb into perspective, the 1504 steps equates to 98 storeys or a vertical distance of 820 feet. If that doesn’t sound difficult enough, the firefighters will also be carrying an extra 24kg on their shoulders. And just to make sure each climber doesn’t change their mind halfway up, there is no turning back once you go through the fire door on the ground floor. But this is all for a great cause. Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive, terminal neurological disease that can strike anyone. At this time, there is no known cure or effective treatment with two people dying of this debilitating disease each day in Australia.

Motor Neurone Disease is cruel in nature with a progressive loss of the use of limbs and the ability to speak, swallow and breathe, while the mind and senses usually remain intact. The Firefighters’ climb helps raise much needed funds to help find the elusive cure. Macquarie University houses Australia’s largest Motor Neurone Disease research facility that employs over 70 researchers and 12 clinicians all working towards finding this cure. The local contingent has started putting in the hours, training the house down every weekend as a team in order to be ready once climb day comes around. “It’s wonderful the support we are receiving from the community for our committed firefighters from Lower Hunter RFS including the 9 from Medowie,” Lower Hunter RFS Climbers Team Leader Louise McClelland told News Of The Area. “We’re hoping to raise all that we can to assist funding for research into a cure for this devastating disease.” Medowie Brigade member Alice Lavender told News Of The Area, “For me I’d say that

an application for funding. Some 250 submissions from the public have been obtained on what the public would like in a Regional Park at Anna Bay. Ideas as diverse as night telescopes to engage in viewing the clear night skies which are enjoyed in Port Stephens have been put forward for the Park. Councillor Sarah Smith spoke for the Park citing the positive benefits for tourism and economic development, as well as the obvious benefits for local youths. The 1.7 hectare site that the community is proposing for the park may require clarification on ownership. Council has committed to bring a plan forward to potentially undertake the development of the Park in stages.

Everything Old Is New Again EARLY in their term Council committed to taking Council meetings on the road to provide better access to the wider community to the process of local Government. The July Council meeting was the first in a series which will allow residents to access Council meetings without travelling to Raymond Terrace. While the change in venue did stop the meeting from being webcast, it was extremely well attended with the Birubi Surf Life Saving Club transformed for the occasion. Over 50 people were in attendance for the meeting, showing that residents

appreciate the effort that Council has made in taking these meetings to the community. Councillor John Nell OAM who has served on Port Stephens Council for over 30 years said, “This is a case of everything old is new again as when he was Mayor the Council Meetings were taken to the community in much the same way.” Councillor Dunkley told News Of The Area, “It is important that people can see what happens at local Government and to get a feel for what happens and share in the decision process.” He believes that the questions and answers session

Members of the public asked about the management of defunct development sites in the CBD of Anna Bay, spoke about Lot 424 at Shoal Bay being added to Halifax Park and the proposed rate rises for Port Stephens in this session. RECENTLY I figuratively, sat down with Lyndey Milan, OAM to talk about food and the upcoming Love Seafood Festival in Port Stephens. Lyndey is an Australian icon when it comes to food, having among other things co-hosted ‘Fresh’ with the Australian Women’s Weekly on Channel 9 and having been Food Director for the Australian Women’s Weekly. I approached interviewing such a seasoned media

Since the closure of BHP, Aubrey has worked tirelessly to preserve the history of an industry which was at the heart of Newcastle’s industrial base. His dedicated band of

former employees raised funds to establish ‘The Muster Point’. This structure is a memorial to the industry and the thousands of Novocastrians who were employed there. Raffles and Volunteers the Backbone of Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service

RESIDENTS of Port Stephens all know that in a medical emergency we can count on the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to be there. The Port Stephens Westpac Helicopter Support Group raises funds to ensure that the service stays in the air. They recently held a fundraising raffle at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace to support the cause. Marg Wilbow told News Of The Area, “Local businesses donated some of the raffle prizes, with gift packs from Blooms Chemist, Terrace Meats and Dan Murphy, the latter two donating gift vouchers to entice locals to buy a ticket or two.” The Members of the Support Group donated a handmade throw rug, and bohemia wine glasses and a bottle of wine as well. “It was a very successful day due to the generosity of the public with over $280 raised,” she said. To date $24,000 has been forwarded to The Westpac Helicopter Service by Port Stephens Support Group. The biggest fundraising event “The Angel Billy “golf day will be

held on 28th October at Nelson Bay Golf Club. The continued efforts of the community are needed to keep the service in the air. It costs around $40 million dollars annually to keep the helicopters and crews ready to respond when needed. The operating costs of the helicopters are approximately $1,000 per hour in fuel, $1,000 per hour to run the engine,

WHAT a breath of fresh air it was to read your page 2 edition dated the 26th July. First I read where the Council have commenced to hold meetings on the Peninsular, a promise made by Ryan Palmer prior to the last Council Election.

It can seem difficult to decorate a home that you are renting, but there are some style tips you can employ. Walls: If you are prepared to pay for the materials, do the work and are painting a neutral colour, maybe your landlord will agree to you giving the rooms a facelift with paint. Furniture: Use stylish pieces, either buy Ikea style furniture that you can assemble yourself or why not go to op shops for a shabby chic or industrial look. This has come about due to Council’s inaction over the past 30 years, whereby the Hotel/Marina owners have completely ignored one of the major conditions of Development Consent to remove and replace this sand in the area from west to east, via rubber-tyred trucks to the beach area at Conroy Park, named after Arthur Conroy, a previous Health Inspector with Port Stephens Council. This condition of the approval was placed on the development to counteract the loss of the western tidal and wave influences to replace sand from west to east naturally. The legacy we have now been left with is deep water where

I have a community anxiety. Recently I was given a written quote for “tinting” on my sunroom windows. I accepted the written quote and went ahead. I was suspicious at the time as the “guy” said: “I like to use my brain to work out the amount required to cover the windows”. I accepted the quote. After the job was completed, by the daughter, dad disappeared. On return dad said: “I got into trouble from the boss for not using the calculator instead of my brain.” Ho! ho! did I see him coming? He doubled the amount. How often does this happen to women? And do we need to pay a little more? Why are our local tradesmen crooks? Does it happen to men so often? SA, Fingal Bay

Dear SA, I’m going to try and merge my Netflix binging with some good advice. Recently, I’ve been watching Cosmetic Surgery Disasters (or some equally captivating title) which is hosted by the same guy who does the Embarrassing Bodies show (as an aside, who in their right mind would allow their infected anal fistula to be broadcast to the world?). Bear with me, SA. I know this appears to be an even wilder segue than I usually take, but bear with me. Let’s take the common boob job. Surgeon A says it will cost $14,000 plus the anaesthetist ($1,500) and then a couple of grand for any unforeseen issues that arise. Surgeon B says you can look like Jessica Rabbit and they’ll throw in return flights to Thailand, five-star accommodation, a round-the-clock medical team and some carafes of lime-green alcohol that you can sip, poolside, even though you’re attached to a drip and swaddled in bandages. The thing is, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. In relation to your particular issue with tradesmen, I would suggest that you always tell them that you work for the ATO. This scares the bejesus out of them. You watch how quickly their conversation moves from ‘do and charge’ to ‘verified quote’ when you start throwing in a line about Nigel from the tax department and how his current focus is on window tinting experts (following last year’s crack down on hair tinting professionals). On a more serious note, if you have a written quote, say: ‘Look Mr Tinter, I don’t want to get between you or your boss or your calculator or your brain. It’s not my fault that you can’t do basic calculations, that’s your business. I’ve accepted the quote and that’s what I’m paying.’ He doesn’t have a leg to stand on. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Jo White, Ladies’ President commented, “playing golf, especially on such a beautiful day is always fun. When the activity is linked to fund-raising, particularly cancer-related, then there is an extra incentive to participate, with opportunities for everyone to help raise the maximum funds possible. Money raised will help ease pressure on families, impacted by this cancer and treatment. Thank you to all the players and Blair for helping us raise a total in excess of $800.” Highlights of the week: Saturday, Nelson Bay hosted the Ladies 3 Club Swing event attracting players from Charlestown, Horizons, Merewether and Nelson Bay.
