Quality Trekkers Raise $90K By Sarah STOKES

CAMP Quality trekkers Carol Compton and Jodi Cooper have returned from a 16 day, 240 km trek of the Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory. Camp Quality cares for children with cancer and their families. The Tomaree locals joined 12 others, who combined raised a staggering $90k. The Newcastle office alone costs $900k a year to operate, so this is an amazing fundraising achievement. To give some idea of the money it takes to run this vital service, 30 children at mini camp costs $9,250, 30 children at junior camp is $27,800 and 30 at middle camp is $44,600. The Newcastle office is currently caring for 179 children. Carol said that the highlight for her was climbing Mount Sonder, one of the Territory’s highest mountains, to see the sunrise. Meet the Candidates Forum

THE Tomaree Ratepayers and Residents Association (TRRA Inc.) will be hosting a ‘Meet the Candidates’ Forum in the runup to the 9 September Council Election. The objective is to provide an opportunity for Mayoral and East Ward candidates to

introduce themselves to the voting public, to provide a brief statement of their priorities for the coming term of Council, and to answer questions on matters of concern to residents and ratepayers. Formal invitations will be sent to all candidates for the position of Mayor and all candidates for the East Ward. The conduct and procedure

WHILE their opponents have been highly critical, the decision by the Labor Party to stand a ticket at the September local government elections was an easy one, according to Mayoral candidate Des Maslen. After all, the ALP has traditionally had strong support in Port Stephens and the party currently holds both the state (Kate Washington) and federal (Meryl Swanson) seats. “I make no apologies for standing under the ALP banner, as a matter of fact I am proud to do so,” said Mr Maslen. “I can’t believe people are criticising us for having the courage to say this is who we are and this is what we stand for. “We want to be the community’s voice and we

Along the way Mr Maslen attended his first ever council meeting and he says it took just five minutes to convince him that he should stand for Mayor. “The meeting was a shambles to say the least,” he recalled. “I believe in giving each elected councillor the opportunity to bring their knowledge of expertise to the fore. “I have a background in engineering and marine biology, others have experience in the finance or social or community sectors

Dingle back for second tilt at mayor

q Geoff Dingle is seeking mayoral election.

STILL ON ELECTION By Charlie ELIAS HE is admired around Port Stephens for standing up to the voting block, he is truly independent and he has 13 years of major achievements on the

Council. Geoff Dingle, who went within approximately 500 votes of ousting the Port’s first popularly elected Mayor Bruce MacKenzie in 2012, is throwing all his eggs in the one basket by

nominating for just the top job. “I have decided to stand for Mayor [and not as a Councillor] because I consider myself as someone who is adequately experienced, someone who is truly Independent and I have done the hard yards as a community worker,” the 67-year-old from Medowie said. “And I am excited that we could be seeing a clearing of the decks to allow some new faces on the next Council.” Among his many achievements on council, Mr Dingle singles out the Medowie planning strategy as his most fulfilling. “It is one of the first such strategies to be established in the state and

remains a very important document in regard to the community’s needs, infrastructure, services and facilities,” he said. A critic of the leadership style of Mr MacKenzie, Mr Dingle said he would focus on consultation and communication, while improving the transparency of the Council. “I will open Council meetings, allow webcasts, improve public access and welcome more site inspections and briefings. “A Mayor’s job is to manage the meetings, not run them, and ensure that everyone is heard and there is a mutual respect between the chair, the Councillors and the public.” As for the next three

A CHAMPION of indigenous and youth issues, proud Labor Party member and Independent councillor, Peter Kafer has no misgivings about standing for Mayor against the ALP. The veteran Councillor is more interested in passing on his vast knowledge and experience to the next generation. It is for this reason he has on his Council election ticket two novices not long out of school – Tarryn Roach and Alannah Newell. “They are our tomorrow. They are fantastic young people with strong leadership qualities and have a great sense of community,” Mr Kafer said. “Their integrity,

respect and energy is boundless and in three years’ time they will have the experience to stand on their own and get elected.” Mr Kafer was first elected to Newcastle Council in 1995 as a Labor Party member while residing in Stockton before moving to Raymond Terrace. He has served two terms on Port Stephens Council as an Independent, driving a number of indigenous, cultural and youth programs. A member of the Wahroonga Aboriginal Corporation, he was instrumental in bringing to the Terrace the hugely successful Nations of Origin tournament and working with local police to establish a learn-to-drive program for Aboriginal youth. “I have worked

years, Mr Dingle is not interested in making promises. He said if elected Mayor he would not spend millions on building monuments but instead spend money on maintaining existing infrastructure. “We have too many projects on the table. We need to sit back and analyse our affairs, our borrowings and formulate five and 10 year plans. “Some of the best projects are the most simple and least costing ones, such as the fenced off-leash area for dogs in Medowie, which only cost $17,500. I think every community should have one.”

closely with police on issues such as youth and public safety, and I was the first to call for a fitness trail similar to what is being developed at Boomerang Park.” Mr Kafer, who has often butted heads with Mayor Bruce MacKenzie and his supporters during Council meetings, says he wants to drive the Council into a new direction. “I am very concerned about environmental issues, particularly the flora and fauna, and I believe it is time we redressed the koala plan of management. “We want to be q Peter Kafer is a champion of indigenous and youth issues. known as a tourist destination but it should “I will lead a more there is always a common not be at the cost of our accessible Council and ground which forms the environment, the two bring back webcasting, an basis of achieving our should go hand in hand. goals without the angst we idea I have championed “If elected Mayor from day one.” currently see at Council I would lead by meetings. consensus. My husband and I take turns making each other our morning hot beverage. He is a coffee drinker and I drink tea. It takes me about 45 seconds to make a cup of tea, but five minutes to make him a coffee (he insists that I use the cappuccino maker). I think, therefore, that he should make the morning drinks four times to my one, to balance it out a bit. Dear Mrs JT,

Mrs JT, Medowie

If we are going to go into a tit-for-tat war, I think you need to go into this with a little more detail. Based on your calculations, the gain made is 300 seconds minus your 45 (255 seconds), which is a fourminute advantage (give or take 25 seconds) multiplied by 365 days, which equals 1,460 minutes or 24.33 hours. Given these (probably inaccurate) calculations, your husband is actually taking one day and night from you a year. Calculate that over the number of years your relationship lasts (I’m giving you no more than five based on your question) and that is five days and nights that he owes you. Having said all of that, I think you should actually take a bit of pride in the fact that he allows you to make his coffee at all. I once went out with a man who would not let me touch his coffee-making equipment (though he was quite happy for me to touch anything else). I thought he was a barrister, but he was actually a barista, which took me a while to work out. I only discovered the truth when I asked for help for my cousin, who had committed white collar fraud. The best this man could offer was a triple macchiato with skim milk frothed into the pattern of a maple leaf. Now, regarding your dilemma, why don’t you book yourself a five-day holiday without hubby to make up for the beverage-making time difference? Load the car with a stash of Dilmah Pot Strength tea bags and drive off into the distance. You’ll feel so much better, and I reckon your long-suffering mate will be rather thrilled as well.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

HUNTER Labor MPs have pledged to work with all stakeholders to address the recommendations of the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Change the Course: National Report on Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment at Australian Universities. The report’s survey found that 55 percent of Newcastle University respondents reported experiencing sexual harassment in any location during 2016, and 30 percent of respondents reported that sexual harassment occurred in a location associated with the University. The survey also found 8 percent of UON respondents had experienced a sexual assault at any location during 2015 and/or

2016, and 1.4 percent of respondents reported that the assault occurred at a location associated with the University. “Hunter based students have taken the courageous step of sharing their experience. It is vital that we act on their experiences and address the unacceptable levels of sexual assault on campus, both in the Hunter and across NSW,” Kate Washington MP, Shadow Minister for the Hunter said. “Lack of respect for women, for people with disabilities, for people in the LGBTI community, indigenous people, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities doesn’t just arise in university,” Jenny Aitchison MP, Shadow Minister for the Prevention of

Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, said. Labor has supported the survey by the Australian Human Rights Commission and taken a bipartisan approach to ensure that the voices of more than 30,000 Australian students who responded to the survey are clearly heard. Labor has also been calling on the Government to finalise the NSW Sexual Assault Strategy, particularly in ensuring more resourcing for sexual assault services, with victims of sexual assault having to wait too long for forensic examinations, as well as making public transport safer, encouraging higher reporting levels to police and developing appropriate responses to emerging issues such as “stealthing”.

It is a day of reflection and connection. It’s a day when our community remembers those that we have lost. James Campbell, who is part of the group organising the Boaty to Bello road trip told News Of The Area, “The road trip will help build awareness of suicide prevention initiatives and the work of groups like the Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network.”

Boaty to Bello for Suicide Awareness

By Marian SAMPSON

BOATY to Bello (Bellingen) is a road trip raising awareness to prevent suicide in our community. Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network (PSSPN) members are going on the road on the weekend of 2627 August. Bikes, cars and even a bus will participate to raise awareness about the huge cost of suicide to families and to communities. There will be a barbecue to kick things off at Iluka Reserve at Boat Harbour at 8am on 26 August after which the procession of vehicles will start on their way up the coast to Bellingen. Once the crew reach their destination, the PSSPN will present the local youth hub a special sign. The road trip will promote the annual PSSPN Walk With Us event which is held at Iluka Reserve at Boat Harbour, delivered in partnership with Lifeline (Hunter), Rotary Club Salamander and the Boat Harbour Council Parks 355c Committee.

BAYNews Of The Area STILL ON ELECTION By Charlie ELIAS FRESH is a word you will often hear when talking to the youngest of the Port Stephens mayoral candidates, Ryan Palmer, about his inaugural foray into Local Government. At just 30 years of age, the hard working president of the Tomaree Business Chamber and convenor of Nelson Bay Now is throwing all his exuberant energy, backed by a massive advertising campaign, into his candidacy. “The council needs a fresh start and I am standing for a strong, fresh, ethical future for Port Stephens,” the Independent candidate said. “If I am elected Mayor I vow to begin working for this area from day one, regardless of the

Fresh new face on the political sphere make-up of the Council and regardless of which political party they stand for. “My aim is to set a solid agenda, engage with the community at every opportunity and be more open and transparent in our dealings. That includes live streaming of all Council meetings.” A former touring tennis professional with a strong background in the financial sector, Mr Palmer has released a four-point plan for voters to consider. They include: Invest in the Port’s CBD, businesses and economic future by revitalising Nelson Bay through infrastructure investment and increased parking. Invest in the Port’s roads,

paths, parks and community facilities with new connections to schools and bus stops, while improving the area’s sporting facilities in order to attract more major events. Increase investment in social, health and youth community programs to help fight domestic violence and support the most vulnerable, the youth, the disadvantaged, and those affected by mental health issues. Finally, to retain Port Stephens as a stand alone Council. Mr Palmer, who has spent all his life in Port Stephens and is married with two children, has opened an office in Donald Street, Nelson Bay.

STEVE Tucker, who quit the Liberal Party 12 months ago because of the loss to the region of tens of thousands of jobs and the botched Council amalgamation legislation, says he could provide the steady hand to lead the Council into a new era. The 63-year-old from Tanilba Bay was first elected to Council in 2004 and says he can provide the firm hand needed to bring councillors in line. “Because of the shenanigans over the past five years, the council has not been able to achieve what it has set out to do,” Mr Tucker, a Central Ward councillor, said. “I have the expertise and the corporate knowledge to ensure every councillor is given a fair opportunity to show their abilities and play their part. “I consider myself to be a hands-on person, I like to lead by example … it is something that I have done throughout my career in IT.” With an honours degree in metallurgy and a masters in engineering, the recently retired Mr Tucker says he now has more time to devote to his Local Government duties. “I am quite proud of the list of achievements on Council, particularly the improvements to the Lemon

STILL ON ELECTION

The only female Mayoral Candidate By Charlie ELIAS HAVING served for 13 years as a Councillor, including six as Deputy Mayor, the most senior and only woman to contest the Port Stephens Mayoral race, Sally Dover, says she is ready to lead. For the 78-year-old Salamander Bay great grandmother, the Mayoral Election is more about continuing to build on the economic achievements of the previous councils. “Yes we do need more sanity in our Council meetings, and I have both the experience and compassion to ensure I lead a more cohesive Council,” Mrs Dover said. “I will not be intimidated and I will stamp out bad language during the meetings. “My mantra will be to respect and honour one another.” Mrs Dover said she felt disillusioned that some of the infighting among predominantly a couple of Councillors had overshadowed the excellent economic results

during her time on Council. “In the past two terms of Council (nine years) we have managed to turn an $11 million debt into a $1.2 million surplus,” she said. “In addition this Council since 2012 has reduced the infrastructure gap from $29 million down to $18 million. “We have fabulous Council staff and this Council has won many awards, including the Council Employer of the Year for 2016… you don’t get that by being dysfunctional.” A longtime member of Tomaree Youth Community Action, the Rock Church and the Graffiti Action team, Mrs Dover said she aimed to continue to build partnerships with community groups on improving footpaths, cycleways and parks. Her other goals include planning and funding of the Fingal Bay link road and ensuring the council’s future financial sustainability. A Liberal Party member since 2004, Mrs Dover will stand as an Independent.

Border Force By Sarah STOKES

LOCAL girl Hannah Bamford, 23, made a visit to her home town last week, in her new role as a Marine Tactical Officer for the Australian Border Force. The appropriately named Cape Class Nelson pulled into Nelson Bay on its way to the Sydney Boat Show, having started in Cairns a week before. The Australian Border Force has eight of this type of boat and they patrol the entire coast of Australia in sections. Their scope is wide and includes tackling illegal fishing, the import or export of prohibited items, unauthorised maritime arrivals, biosecurity and any piracy, terrorism or violence at sea. Their powers allow them to board and search any vessel, using their smaller yet vital ‘Interceptor’ launch boats. They were checking boats in Nelson Bay to ensure compliance with maritime laws. The powerful boat is 58m long and has a crew of 18, who are on board for 28 days in a row. Hannah has been in her role since last December, having undergone extensive training. Prior to that she was working as an earthmover. Mum of four, Prue Bamford was bursting with pride, seeing her daughter in her uniform and doing the job she had aspired to for a long time. She was waiting at 7am for the ship to come through the twin heads of Tomaree and Yacaaba. Prue told News Of The Area, “I’m so proud of Hannah and that she is part of such a great organisation that look after their staff so well. I’m grateful to the Border Force for looking after us and Australian waters.”

Hint Of Colour on Canvas

By Marian SAMPSON

WORKS featuring a hint of colour are the feature of the next Port Stephens Community Arts Centre exhibition which is being held from 26 July to 5 September. The exhibition is a series of work from several artists diverging from the black and white theme by just a touch. Small splashes of colour make these works high impact. The artists have explored a monochrome palette using shades and tones of black highlighted with a hint of colours. Also on display is the Patchwork group’s Paint Pot project featured in the gallery annex, a colourful complement to the main exhibit. Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “Our membership is made up of over 400 active artisans who participate in workshops and a variety of sessions at the centre.” “It is wonderful to extend ourselves in genres and styles which give us new skills.” “This exhibition is one which we are very proud of as it is quite different from our usual style of exhibition,” she said. The Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is a

not-for-profit organisation and entry is free. The centre’s membership welcomes visitors to browse through the gallery and enjoy the Garden Café which is open

10-2:30 pm on weekends. The gallery is located on Cultural Close, off Shoal Bay Road in Nelson Bay and is open to the public 10-4 pm daily.

Sisterhood helps women in need

By Marian SAMPSON

LADIES in Port Stephens take wearing a bra for granted. Local businesswoman Anita Marshall discovered on a trip to Vanuatu, that the islander ladies wanted bras, and so the Sisterhood of Baskets Belong Titties endeavour started. Basket Belong Titties translates to bra in the local Ni-Van language. Anita networks on social media for bra donations. Generous locals travelling to Vanuatu and Fiji fill their baggage allowance with the bras and deliver them to women in need. Bras have been sent to a Northern Territory

mission who put a call out for women’s clothing. The endeavour has sent several thousand bras to women who don’t have access to bras or simply can’t afford them. Over 100 people have donated to the program, mostly from Port Stephens and Newcastle. The good work saw Anita recognised in a recent edition of MPA Magazine (Mortgage Professionals Australia). Anita Marshall told News Of The Area, “I started this because I was shocked that most of the women in the South Pacific cannot afford a bra.” “For most women there the cost of a bra is around two weeks’ wages, and they have far greater priorities

than buying a bra so they go without.” “I wanted to make a difference in the lives of these wonderful women who have so little and appreciate absolutely anything you do for them.” In Australia we are very blessed and often take so much for granted, it’s nice to give back and make a difference,” she said. Anita Marshall is active in the local bay business community, and is involved in a wide range of charitable work including being fundraising coordinator for the Port Stephens Koalas. Genes for Jeans

GENES for Jeans Day was celebrated in honour of a very special little boy this week at Central Health Alliance in Williamtown. When Kaylene Staader was pregnant with her twin boys, she found out that she was a carrier for a genetic disorder X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome (XLP). She was told there was a 50 percent chance, she would pass it onto one or both of her boys. The twins were tested

at birth for the disorder, and when they were about a week old, it was discovered that one of the twins, Kobie, had XLP. A little after Kobie turned one, Kaylene and her husband discovered that the disorder had developed, and as a result he had little to no immune system. Once a week, the family go into Central Health Alliance in Williamtown, and Kobie gets his immunoglobulin transfusion through a little port in his stomach. At the age of two, Kobie

Mainly Music

By Geoff WALKER

‘WHERE Music Makes Memories’ is the catch cry of the Mainly Music people who gather at the Anglican Church Mallabula each Thursday morning at 10am. Commencing in 1990, the group provides interactive educational experiences

between carers and preschool children. It starts with a 30 minute music session followed by a ‘little lunch’ for the children and morning tea for the carers. $5 covers the cost. The children can then play together in cubby houses, tents and with child-friendly toys under supervision.

handles this all in his stride, and is mostly just excited to see his ‘favourite Paul’, Dr Paul Burford, and of course get his handful of lollies. Fortunately, there is a cure for Kobie’s disease and at some point in the coming years, he will undergo chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Kaylene told News Of The Area, “I am so overwhelmed by the love and support myself, Kobie and our family have received from Dr Burford at Central Health Alliance.” “Not only is Paul our doctor, we consider him family.” “I have learnt so much from Kobie already, he has shown me strengths I never knew I even had,” she said. The Staader family have a long journey ahead of them, but they are confident that Kobie has shown how strong and courageous he is, and that with the continued support of their family and friends, they will be able to look back and see the fight they won with pride. “We’d like to take this opportunity to highlight the need to support causes like Genes for Jeans Day,” Kaylene said “We just never know the value of what research does until you need it for your own children.” It’s just a matter of turning up on the day at the church grounds which are located in Strathmore Road, Mallabula. Supervisor Lynley Keers said that both the carers and toddlers benefited from the experience. “The vital skills of social interaction are very important,” she said. “Our small group is looking for some new faces. Why not come along?”

Positive Points for Students By Marian SAMPSON

VALUES, respect and responsibility are being rewarded on a whole of school basis at Tomaree High School under a new rewards program. VIVO is a points-based program where students can earn points based on their adherence to the school’s set values. Deputy principal at Tomaree High School, Glenn Sproule, told News Of The Area, “VIVO is a whole of school recognition system which will enable teachers to reward and recognise students when they behave how and when we want them to.” The values that the school has set focus on polite conversation, and creating a safe school environment and these values are taught across the school on a weekly basis. When students meet expectations they are rewarded VIVO points which they can exchange for goods

in an online shop. From key rings, to iPads, VIVO currency is there for students to spend. There are also in house VIVO rewards like dollars off formal tickets and even having morning tea with a deputy principal. Each staff member has a VIVO budget to spend. VIVO points offer a powerful incentive to students as they can see which teacher rewarded them and why, it’s great for students to see a positive comment from a teacher that recognises them. The program captures the ‘middle of the road’ students, not those who are academically outstanding, but those who are positive members of the school community. Glenn Sproule said, “It’s rewarding the ordinary often.” Student Zac Bonser already has 64 VIVO points and is aiming for 500 points by the end of term. Fellow student Sophie

want 199 points to buy a splat egg, because it looks fun,” Caiya Workman said. Ethan Martin has q Students Zac Bonser, Sophie Trevern, Caiya Workman and Ethan Martin have set their VIVO points goals. Photo by Marian Sampson

Trevern said, “I have around 120 points and I feel proud of what I have achieved.” “I have 80 points now and

accumulated 40 VIVO points and is thinking about some headphones from the online store.

COPSY is actively pursuing possible easier to access locations and complementary transport options suggested by the review group. The focus of the meeting was on an early support centre with on-site counselling service available and this to be complemented with a series of intervention and preventative workshops, seminars, and forums in schools and community settings rather than possible promotion and awareness initiatives. The centre would be a place that young people would know about and be able to access service through. There are already many groups reducing the stigma of mental health but the services are not there to back them up.

Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) convened an expert steering group last week to consider what it should focus on to improve mental health services for youth in Port Stephens. Geoffrey Basser, who sits on the COPSY executive committee, told News Of The Area, “It is imperative that we act now to assist Port Stephens youth in relation to mental health issues.” It was agreed that COPSY would focus on high school youth because they are most at risk. Hey Sista By: Marian SAMPSON

SISTA Code founder Melissa Histon is a woman on a mission to make a real difference to the lives of women. Melissa founded the Sista Code in 2014 after experiencing a number of lifealtering events. Her dream was to see women empowered, happy and connected. Melissa is the 2017 Newcastle Woman of the Year. The Sista Code has grown into an online community of 16,000 women from around the globe: a community of women that empowers other women. In January this year, the Sista Code established the charity Got Your Back Sista, which helps women who have escaped domestic violence to start their lives again. Whether it’s building a house for the homeless in Nepal, interviewing inspiring women from around the globe, or creating events and campaigns to support women escaping domestic violence, Melissa knows that true change can only happen when we all stand together and boost each other. Bev Apps of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Service told News Of the Area, “We are excited to have Melissa as the guest speaker for the 15th annual Pink Breakfast which

PS, We Love Seafood By Marian SAMPSON

MOUTH watering fresh seafood is the focus of the Port Stephens Love Seafood festival this month. Local produce is the feature and there are plenty of opportunities to get into the gastronomy of the local seafood offerings. Saturday 12 August is the Farmers of the Sea event on d’Albora Marinas at Nelson Bay. Find out all about the local oysters, enjoy the shucking competition, taste some plump oysters, and find out about the local oyster growers’ trail around Port Stephens.

There’s a gala dinner on at Broughtons at the Bay on 25 August where the courses will be paired with selected wines and the menu will be delivered by local chefs Ludovic Poyer of Poyers, Ben Way of Little Beach Boathouse and Matt Keyes of the Little Nel. There are signature Trawler to Table lunches throughout the month as well as specials at a range of local restaurants and eateries. Fish and Fun is on 27 August at d’Albora Marinas at Nelson Bay with cooking demonstrations, seafood tastings, a kids’ fun zone and touch tanks. If you’d like to try your

hand at cooking something special, take some advice from some of the locals, like Bob and Narelle Monin who have been in the seafood business for over 30 years. Narelle Monin told News Of The Area, “I’d cook this snapper by putting some scores in the flesh so it cooks evenly, just put it straight on the barbecue, seasoned with salt and olive oil and served up with a light salad, chips or even baked potatoes and greens,” she said. Professional fishing charter operator Brad Horn of Pacific Blue Charters told News Of The Area, “There are plenty of snapper, trag and kingfish out there at the

Volunteers Create Pristine Parks

By Marian SAMPSON

THE state of the parks in Fingal Bay is no accident. Once again Port Stephens residents are the willing volunteers that have made Barry Park a place of beauty for all to enjoy. Over the years the Council Parks Committee volunteers have cleared the overgrown lantana and other weeds. They have also installed pathways and boardwalks and even the concrete stairs, making it safer for fishermen to get to the best rock fishing spots. A toilet block and barbecue are also at Barry Park thanks to the volunteers. The whale watching platform is a great spot to enjoy the thousands of whales that migrate up and down the coast from May to November each year. Barry Park is now so lovely with stunning vistas that it has become a popular spot for weddings.

Arthur Heiler, who is a long standing member of the committee, told News Of The Area, “Now the work is all about maintaining the site, weeding and dealing with issues like erosion.” “Around 500-600 volunteer man hours are donated by members of our community to the Fingal Bay Parks Committee making our parks in Fingal Bay wonderful places to enjoy.” “Volunteering to work in the parks committee is a great way to connect with the environment, and others in the local community while enjoying some physical activity and making a positive impact on the environment,” he said. There are several parks committees around Port Stephens and all welcome volunteers. To find out more about volunteering in Port Stephens parks you can visit www.portstephens. nsw.gov.au.

Humans Of The Area: Frank Future By Marian SAMPSON

FRANK Future is best known for his work in conservation, protection of whales, and the promotion of Port Stephens. Frank arrived in Port Stephens expecting to take on the role of caretaker of the outer lighthouse. Unfortunately during a managerial hiatus, the lighthouse was vandalised with fire destroying the historic lighthouse. After the fire, Frank was standing in the ruins on Fingal Island contemplating his future when two whales breached. At the time whale numbers were low and this was a rare and wonderful

sighting. Ultimately it was this sighting of the whales that lead Frank to build Imagine and become a force in international circles working to protect whales. Frank, a shipwright, built Imagine in 1995 with the help of a group of stakeholders. Frank Future told News Of The Area, “Imagine was one of the first businesses to offer whale watching in NSW.” “It was in mid June 1996 when cruising on Imagine that Migaloo was sighted, and footage of the whale was shown on NBN.” “It was a catalyst for people to start coming to the Bay for whale watching,” he said.

Support for Rescue Services By Mandy ELLIS

A CEREMONY on Wednesday evening saw Marine Rescue Port Stephens presented with valuable grants under the Clubs NSW Community Grant Scheme. A total of $30,000 was provided by continuing supporters, Wests Nelson Bay. $25,000 is being dedicated to finance part of the cost

to provide a pontoon-based facility at Nelson Bay Marina to support the rescue activities of the two high speed rescue vessels PS31 John Thompson and PS30 Codi K II. The current dock facility provides no shelter, storage, power, toilet facilities or phone and internet services. The Unit will look to other donors to meet the rest of the costs.

Unit Commander Lee Uebergang told News Of The Area, “These grants will allow Marine Rescue’s volunteers to have proper facilities when manning our rescue vessels 24 hours per day year-round.” “Whilst the financial support of Marine Rescue NSW is appreciated, it contributes less than 20 percent of annual running costs, leaving $160,000 for the Unit to raise

itself.” “Grants and donations are essential to keep Marine Rescue Port Stephens providing its lifesaving services.” The remaining $5,000 will be used to provide backup phone and internet services at the Nelson Head 24-hour Communications Centre, which not only protects vessels in and off Port Stephens, but acts as the Emergency

international Whaling Commission Meetings with the goal of making whale watching the only legitimate industry for whales. Frank actively lobbied the Japanese commission to stop whaling in Australian waters.

Communications Radio facility after hours for RFS Lower Hunter Firecom covering Port Stephens, Maitland, Cessnock and Dungog, and RFS Hunter Valley Firecom covering Singleton and Muswellbrook council areas. “I am encouraged by the way local clubs in Port Stephens are prepared to support our almost 250 volunteers in protecting our community and tourist visitors,” Lee Uebergang said. “Without their support and that of our generous community we simply couldn’t provide this safety umbrella around the clock.”

Retirement Advice for Sea & Tree Changers By Marian SAMPSON

q Rachel Lane, author, finance expert and government advisor will speak on retirement.

newsofthearea.com.au

FINDING out about the options for pensioners and retirees can be difficult, and being either a self-funded retiree or pensioner doesn’t mean you have to live life less. It can be hard to decide whether to stay in the family home, or unlock some of the equity. There is a free seminar on Thursday 10 August from 10am to 12 noon at Nelson Bay Golf Club. The guest speaker is author, finance expert and government advisor Rachel Lane who will share tips and vital information for people considering downsizing, to unlock some of the equity

which they hold in the family home. Martin Checketts, partner at Mills Oakley law firm will advise on the legal implications of the contracts that you sign up for with retirement villages and aged care providers. The seminar features different ownership models that you can choose from and how your decisions will impact your pension. Author Rachel Lane told News Of The Area, “Now is an opportune time for seniors to re-evaluate their finances and think about what lifestyle changes could better prepare them for the future.” “The benefits of the seminar will inform

downsizers on how they can access some equity and increase their cash reserves; we will cover what the new pension asset tests are and how they may affect your entitlements.” “We’ll also look at the innovative new lifestylefocused seniors living model, called land lease communities, where you own the home and lease the land, offering a number of financial benefits. And we will be looking at how the land lease ownership model compares with the traditional retirement village option.” Those who attend the seminar will be armed with up-to-date information and can also enjoy a High Tea in the new Nelson Bay Golf Club.

The Hunter region, the largest in NSW with more than 55 affiliated clubs, will provide the logistical support for the championships. Hornets technical director Karen Davies said it was their job to ensure the games continued to tick over in a timely manner. “We look after the fixtures, the referees, the scheduling, the catering and the results,” she said. “It is a massive weekend and the more volunteers we get the easier it becomes for us to manage.” Nelson Bay had to beat off five other regions that tendered for the Peter Wilson Memorial, with the winning tender ensuring the tournament stays in the Bay until February 2020. “In addition to having the finest facilities here at Tomaree, Nelson Bay has the added attraction of accommodation,, infrastructure and sightseeing,” Ms Davies said. Port councillors John Nell and Steve Tucker, who attended the announcement last Thursday, said they were proud of the high standard of sporting facilities locally and the economic benefits the gathering of thousands of tourists of all ages would bring to the area.

Wild Dog Control 1080 Baiting The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) and MidCoast Council (MCC) in cooperation with local neighbours, NSW Forestry Corp and the Hunter Local Land Services will be undertaking 1080 ground baiting for wild dog control within Myall Lakes National Park, Ghin-doo-ee National Park, Bulahdelah Plain Wetland Council Reserve (Lot 601 DP1171576 Pacific Highway, Bulahdelah) and 334-ha of private conservation lands on Myall River Road and Burdekins Road, Bulahdelah. Baiting will commence on Monday 14 August 2017 and cease by Friday 29 September 2017. This baiting program is being carried out as part of a broader control program coordinated by the Hunter Local Land Services to mitigate the impacts of wild dogs on stock and wildlife. Domestic pets are not permitted in Nature Reserves, National Parks or State Conservation Areas. Neighbours and reserve users are reminded that 1080 baits are lethal to domestic pets. We suggest that pets and working dogs be restrained to ensure that they do not enter the baiting location during poisoning operations or to muzzle dogs if they are required to work the baiting location during and after poisoning. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance. No baits will be placed within 150 metres of residences. All areas will have 1080 baiting signs erected at access points to where baiting is being undertaken. For further information please contact NPWS Great Lakes Area office on (02) 6591 0300, Mid Coast Council on (02) 6591 7222 or the Hunter Local Land Services on 1300 795 299. c

A Touch of class comes to the Bay

q Nelson Bay touch players training for the February tournament.

By Charlie ELIAS FOR many years now Port Stephens has been the envy of other councils when it comes to sporting facilities, with the Tomaree touch fields laying testament to that claim. It was no surprise then that the Nelson Bay Touch Football club was last Thursday handed the highly popular Peter Wilson memorial championships for the next three years running. In terms of numbers the tournament is the biggest on the Tomaree peninsula, attracting in excess of 130 teams, 2,000-plus participants, 800 officials and volunteers plus a staggering 7,000 spectators. “It just keeps getting bigger every year, starting with around 70 teams in 2007,” Nelson Bay Touch president Nev Gear said. “This is a massive win not only for the regional touch fraternity but for the Port Stephens economy as a whole.” The tournament is to be played over the weekend of 3-4 February, 2018, with representatives from five regions in the under 14, 16 and 18 years age groups.
