Demolition of Bay Gallery Building Looms

THE Yacaaba Street extension in Nelson Bay will improve traffic but will also see the Octapod Art Gallery close as of 31 August. The Pop up shop features the works of 10 main artists who also serve in the gallery shop. The artists have met and are hoping that another pop up space will become available. Artist Anna Webster told News Of The Area, “We are hoping that we will be able to find some space under a model similar to the ‘Renew Newcastle’ one which will see the gallery fill vacant shop space in the Nelson Bay CBD.”
“Lots of locals have come through the gallery since we opened and the response has been very positive.” “It has been wonderful to work with like-minded people, and offer a gallery which complements the Community Arts Centre,” she said. Liza Black, another artist with works featured at the gallery, said “All the artists who display their works here and volunteer have a good knowledge of all the other artists and their works.” “There are 10 key artists who contribute to the gallery and volunteer to serve as well as a couple of other artists who display their works,”
she said. Council purchased the premises many years ago with a vision of demolishing the building
the business chamber, in preparation for the demolishing of the building and the building of the Yacaaba Street extension through to the waterfront.

works are being featured between 12 July and 8 August at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre in Nelson Bay. Margaret not only paints at the centre but runs classes as well, including the Life Drawing sessions, and is constantly recruiting models for the classes. English born Margaret migrated to Australia in 1964 with her husband and small children and still has her north of England accent. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts as well as a Graduate Diploma in Art from Newcastle University. Between 1989 and 2007 Margaret won several awards and had her works included in various exhibitions. In 1993 she won first, second and third place at the Morisset Art Show and in 2003 took out the coveted Port Stephens Art Prize. “I started winning art competitions when I was 12,” Margaret told News Of

Bagnalls Beach Barbie for Probus By Marian SAMPSON
FRIENDSHIPS abound at the Probus Club of Port Stephens who, as a group, love their outings and their barbecues. The group recently met at Bagnalls Beach Reserve, a favourite spot for the club’s bimonthly barbecue . The blokes donned the mantels of master chefs and were in action delivering the usual great steaks and sausages. The events have a typical Aussie barbecue feel, with the boys standing around the snags discussing world affairs and the footy, and the ladies having a chat around the table covering everything from upcoming events to holiday plans. Anne Gibson, President of Probus Nelson Bay, told News Of The Area, “The barbecues are such a relaxing afternoon with lots of eating, chatting and
fellowship.” “It is easy to form friendships in this atmosphere, and prospective and new members are encouraged to come along for this reason.” “If you are retired or semiretired and looking to enjoy activities and make new friends, come along to a meeting on the second Thursday of the month, 9.30am at Nelson Bay Bowling Club. You are very welcome to just turn up,” she said. The group also has regular walks on the first and third Wednesday of each month where members explore the local region’s scenic areas. There’s also fun golf and croquet, bowls and other activities happening year round. For more information, either phone Penny on 0419 436 733 or visit www. probusclubofportstephens.org.

BOAT Harbour residents are doing more than usual to get the right playground for the growing number of families living in the area. The Boat Harbour Village Collective was formed in July 2014. It is a committee of mums on a mission to provide a quality playground with equipment that makes going to the Boat Harbour park something on every Port Stephens family’s agenda. The seven mums have 14 kids, all under nine, between them so they know what is needed for kids in a quality playground facility. The current playground has just three pieces of

New Group to Tackle Drugs and Alcohol
By Marian SAMPSON
THE Port Stephens Community Drug Action Team wants to hear from people who would like to make a difference.
Community Drug Action Teams (CDATs) are groups of people who are working together in NSW to prevent harm from drugs and alcohol. Alcohol is a major factor in domestic and public violence and well being.
The 2013 National Drug Strategy Household Survey found that more than onethird of people’s drinking habits had placed them at risk of an alcohol-related injury in the past year. Alcohol and Drug
Foundation’s Senior Community Development Officer, Beau Newell said, “There are a range of opportunities available to get involved and help prevent alcohol and drug harm.” “We’re looking for locals in all areas of Port Stephens to contribute their skills or to help other CDAT members, to run local community events throughout the year.” “CDAT is led by the community, for the community. The more people who get involved the more we
equipment, that don’t encourage play or stimulate learning. With the influx of young, growing families moving into the area, the current facilities fail to fulfill the needs of children. Nature-based play is great for imagination and learning, and the Collective wants children to connect to the local environment through play. Naomi Farrelly of the Boat Harbour Village Collective told News Of The Area, “We didn’t want a playground that looked like we had flicked through a catalogue, we wanted something that made the playground somewhere unique and different to the other playgrounds in the region.” “The $66,000 worth of
can work together to tackle drug and alcohol problems in the greater Port Stephens area,” he said. To find out more about CDAT contact Beau Newell on 0498 55 20 20, or attend Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Service, 5 Phillip Street Raymond Terrace, on Tuesday 18 July, at 11:00am. Elizabeth Schiemer told News Of The Area, “I am hoping to find enough people from the Bay to form a group here.”
work which has been funded through fundraising in the community and grants through the Community Building Partnership Program 2015, and Port Stephens Council, started this week after a series of delays in getting the works organised through Council.” “We have a fort with ropes and nature-based play equipment being installed and hope to build on the playground with a second stage of development after this stage is completed,” she said. The Collective’s key objective is to ensure that the play space is sympathetic to the natural environment, and enhances what is already there, blends in, and provides a quality experience for children.
“To have a better lifestyle we need to think global, act local,” she said. “The Bay is geographically distant from Raymond Terrace and The Australian Drug Foundation could provide support with a Community Drug Action Team to establish positive programs in our own locality.” You can contact Elizabeth at Salamander Bay Natural Health Services via www. healthportstephens.com.au.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
My Internet keeps dropping out and I work from home. I am having murderous thoughts towards my Internet Service Provider. Do you have any words of wisdom? Ms HJ, Boat Harbour
Dear Ms HJ, I hear you loud and clear. Remember the good old days before we did everything online? The good old days when we worked in workplaces. I yearn for those days, Ms HJ, because we were not controlled by some Internet-Cloud-Modem-NBN-Cable-thingy that was prone to failure at random moments tied to deadlines. I have this very same problem at my place. I’m sure I’m on a most-wanted list with my ISP, due to the many thinly-veiled threats I make to go on a long-haul flight and track them down, with their lousy service and ‘please hold for a survey’ rubbish, even though I’ve been waiting for two hours for an as-yet unresolved issue. My most recent Internet dilemma was nothing to do with my provider, apparently, but an ant nest in the fuse box. These were not your run-of-the-mill ants. No, they were suicide bombers, hell-bent on blowing up my fuse box by electrocuting themselves. The answer for you is to go to a free Wi-Fi venue, but of course they close at hours not commensurate with late night writing. You also have to get out of your pyjamas and maybe attend to some basic personal hygiene matters. And you have to keep ordering food, which seriously diminishes your earnings, particularly when you go to a swanky café with ocean views. I can only empathise and suggest that there are some great views to be had at Wi-Fi-friendly eateries in the Bay. You may not get much work done, but you may see a whale breach or a camel plod across the sand dunes, and your blood pressure should be temporarily lowered. That is until a gang of grotty children decide to sit next to you and their table manners are so appalling that you end up with bits of their guacamole into your keyboard. Try working under those conditions. Carpe diem, Jasminda

THE inaugural Port Stephens Koala Gala was held on 2 July providing an opportunity to celebrate our unique koala population and learn how to protect Port Stephens koalas. Hosted at d’Albora Marinas Nelson Bay, the Koala Gala formed part of the annual Port Stephens Naturefest program and featured educational workshops, environmental stalls, tree giveaways, activities, and free entertainment. The event is part of an education program funded by the NSW Environmental Trust organised by Port Stephens Council. Les Seddon, Council’s Natural Resources Coordinator said, “Port Stephens is one of the few places koalas call home and they are a critical part of our
local identity.” “Koalas are also a fantastic tourism draw card and an indicator species of ecosystem health, so we want to make sure they are around for many future generations to come,” he said. One of the highlights of the Gala was the premiere screening of ‘Journey of Steve the Koala’ an animation designed by local artists and put together with the help of primary school children from across the Tomaree Peninsula. You can watch the animation at https://youtu. be/DMxdaLJRiSs. Community groups participated in the event alongside Council staff who handed out badges and stickers to kids on the day. Carmel Northwood of Port Stephens Koalas told News Of The Area, “Our Organisation
cares for and rehabilitates injured, orphaned and sick koalas.” “We are encouraging people to adopt a koala to help preserve our local koala population,” she said. The Nelson Bay Probus
Club turned out this week to plant koala feed trees at Lorikeet Reserve in Corlette, showing that there are plenty of ways community groups and individuals can participate in helping to keep our koala population strong.

types of plastic that could be recycled. Latest figures show only three percent of plastic shopping bags used in Australia are being recycled, with plastics taking 5001000 years to break down. This group was spotted in the company of approximately 14 other dolphins, including Ben’s alliance (another older group of three males) and Debby, a female who was also seen during the 2015 and 2016 census. The largest pod encounter was a group of 20 dolphins. An ongoing population study by the Marine Parks Association using photo identification has observed 275 individual dolphins in the Bay, which is known as the dolphin capital of Australia. Rockpool rambles, Koala Gala and spooky tours have also been highlights on the Naturefest calendar.

HAVE you noticed the red bins at Woolworths in Nelson Bay and Salamander Bay? Or the long bin at the back of the checkouts at Coles in Salamander Bay for various types of recycling? These are part of an initiative known as Redcycling which aims to recycle most soft plastics and not just the grey shopping bags. All manner of household plastics can be recycled, including
cereal packet inserts, biscuit wrappers, cling film and frozen vegetable bags. The rule of thumb is that if you can scrunch it up into a ball, then it can be recycled. Local group OCCI (Ocean and Coastal Care Initiatives), have recently run its own campaign on plastics recycling, led by member Diana Latona, who has a special interest in the area. Diana had a stall in the Salamander Bay Centre and was showing people the

This is a World Record attempt and there will be plenty to see and do on the day. Organisers are encouraging everyone to come along. Throughout Naturefest, there have been plenty of people whale watching at headlands around Boat Harbour and Birubi Point. The dolphin census results are in and the population at the Bay is very healthy indeed. The Marine Parks Association has reported that 67 dolphins were sighted

Test Of Faith
By John SAHYOUN LIKE most regions in Australia, the 2016 Census revealed a sharp rise in the number of residents with no religious affiliation. Myall Coast Catholic Parish Pastoral Coordinator, Sister Libbey Byrne, said there are a broad range of reasons for the increase. “Australia is a deeply spiritual place, you’ll hear people saying I’m spiritual but not religious,” she said. “People sometimes equate religion with going to church and believing a certain set of doctrines, they don’t see that religion is about a relationship with God.” In Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest, the number of people who ticked ‘No Religion’ jumped from 14.7 percent in 2011 to 22.2 percent last year. The figures, recently released from the Australian
Bureau of Statistics, show similar trends in the rest of the region, with a five percent increase in those selecting ‘No Religion’ in Karuah and a seven percent rise in Bulahdelah. For the first time, the 2016 Census had ‘No Religion’ listed as the lead option on the questionnaire, raising concerns that the ‘donkey vote’ could have inflated results. Sr Byrne said others who “equate religion as going to church” may have selected ‘No Religion’ simply because they do not attend services. “Some people are religious but don’t understand they are, it is about relationships, rather than just organised religion,” she said. Historical Census data shows around one percent of the Australian population marked the ‘No Religion’ box
in 1966. Last year’s data revealed the number has now swelled to 29.6 percent, which is nearly double the 15.5 percent recorded in 2001. Sr Byrne told News Of The Area, the Census figures show “the church has a lot of work to do”. “I think the sexual abuse crisis has let people down badly, we present one front but then there are those who don’t practise what they preach,” she said. “I think that’s part of why people have become disillusioned and don’t want to identify with those groups.” Sr Byrne said, “Christian churches need to take a good look at people and see what their real needs are and how we can help.” “We need to look outwards and not inwards,” she said.

Christi baked 98 cupcakes, then left it up to the children to use their imaginations when it came to the decorating. “The children coloured the icing and did the piping and made their little eyes for the Cookie Monsters and little Elmos,” Christi said. The morning was a hit with everyone.

Worimi Culture Strong By Rachael VAUGHAN
WORIMI NAIDOC week across Port Stephens was a phenomenal success, with all events organised by the Land Council attended in large numbers. The week kicked off with a traditional opening at the Port Stephens Council Chambers on Monday. Uncle John Ridgeway OAM, Worimi elder, played an important role in the opening, as did Andrew Smith, CEO of Worimi Land Council.
Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan spoke to the crowd gathered on the chilly morning. “I encourage everyone to learn as much as they can about the Worimi culture, whether you are Indigenous or not.” “NAIDOC is one week, but we can use what we learn this week to help us to promote a community free of discrimination, [that] works towards reconciliation, pride in culture and an even better tomorrow,” he said.

q A crowd over over 3000 turned out to celebrate at Murrook. Wednesday saw a march, special ceremony and community barbecue in Nelson Bay. Thursday was the Port Stephens NAIDOC Touch Football Championship, which resulted in a hard fought final for the second year taking place between Worimi and RAAF. RAAF were the winners on the day, taking out The Cup, with runner up Worimi taking home the Plate. The culmination of a wonderful week of culture, was the outstanding community day put on at Murrook Cultural Centre. Young children were treated to jumping castles, rides, bracelet weaving, rock painting and more. Local businesses and
relevant stakeholders were on hand with education and knowledge sharing of their services available to the community. A barbecue, fresh fruit stall and freshly cooked damper filled everyone’s bellies, and the crowds were entertained by deadly performers. Jacob Ridgeway, Worimi man, and his partner Kat Waria, a proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander woman, played beautifully for the crowds with a passionate performance. Last Kinection, a Newcastle formed local Hip Hop group got the crowd going again with a special performance. Dr Joel Wenitong from Last Kinection told the crowd
how special it was to see so many people proud of their culture, out celebrating the day. “We’ve got so many black and deadly faces, caramel and golden too.” “It’s so amazing to see us all together, proud of our culture.” he said. Last Kinection brought a star struck young fan, four year old Louie Bovill, onto the stage to sing his favourite song ‘Black and Deadly’ with his idols. Louie’s Mother, proud Wiradjuri Woman Michelle
Bovill, told News Of The Area, “NAIDOC week is a time to celebrate our culture, community and kin while reflecting on the strength, resilience and determination of our ancestors and elders.” “Worimi NAIDOC event is always a special one, but this year our Land Council took the event to new heights.” “I am so grateful to raise my children in this community, with so many amazing role models to look up to and feel proud to be Aboriginal,” she said.
