Nelson Bay Building Height Worries focus around blocking view corridors FROM Page 1

Port Stephens, Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRAA), and EcoNetwork. Over many months these Organisations with diverse aims for the township came to a consensus as to the amenity of the township,

including factors such as maintaining view corridors and building heights. The Nelson Bay Strategy which was put before Council on 12 December 2017 (prior to publication) is a radical departure from the consensus reached in 2012. TRRA believes the new plan proposes not only more than doubling the current ‘default’ building height limit throughout the entire town centre from 15 to 35 metres, but also allows developers to build even higher than the 35 metres buildings. Nigel Waters of TRRA told News Of The Area, “Height is the critical issue for the future of the Bay. They [Council]

would give away our unique advantage, with no guarantee that any high rise apartments will actually be lived in for most of the year?” Mr Waters believes that the result would be a constant ‘ratcheting up’ of heights as each developer sought to obtain views over new buildings in front of their site. TRRA is calling on the new Mayor and Councillors to honour their election promises to preserve the character of The Bay. TRRA is concerned that Council has a conflict of interest in relation to the development of sites in Nelson Bay, as it owns two

sites the Donald Street East (Multi Story Car Park and Donald Street West (Rivers Car Park). Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “In NSW under state law, clause 3.6, buildings with design qualities can be built higher anywhere. “The document is going on exhibition for community comment, and nothing is set in stone. Council is mindful that the public exhibition is not being pushed through over Christmas and the holidays, therefore it will go on exhibition in February through into March 2018. “There is a big focus on floor space ratio: it is not

about blocking views,” Mayor Palmer told News Of The Area. “The two sites which Council owns are earmarked for community interest and I don’t believe that there is a conflict of interest.” “I’m looking for the best outcome for Nelson Bay; best parking and economic return and I believe that Council is doing everything possible to create the best outcomes for Nelson Bay and infrastructure for the community.” “Salamander Bay is a prime example of giving back to the community with roads, drainage, bus shelters and the best shopping experience at Salamander Bay,” he said.

Tennis Club Celebrates 50 years

By Marian SAMPSON

BOAT Harbour Tennis Courts have been open for 50 years and the Boat Harbour Recreation Club is proud to be celebrating this milestone. The land that the courts occupy is designated as community land and was gifted to the community in 1967 by Boat Harbour resident and developer Keith

Squance in 1967. The Tennis Courts were hand built by TAFE students in 1967 and they are still serving the community with the courts being used for their designated purpose. Coral Kearins of Boat Harbour told News Of The Area, “At one stage we had a fight on our hands, Council unbeknown to the community moved a resolution to change

Rotary Recognises Community Volunteers By Marian SAMPSON THERE are always some people that come to mind when thinking about those who make a difference in our community. Recently, the Nelson Bay Rotary Club held a special night to recognise community volunteers and business leaders. Over 60 Club members, recipients and guests attended the evening, where 11 Rotary Immortal Badges were presented, three more are still to be awarded by those unable to attend. Nelson Bay Rotary Club Foundation Director, John Cropley announced the awards, he highlighted the $100 per badge awarded which recognised those who have made a difference in our local community, in a variety of different ways. The $1,400 for the

badges will be contributed to the Rotary Endowment Fund which will continue

and internationally. The Rotary Foundation is Rotary’s Charity arm.

Club President, Kathy Rimmer told News Of The Area, “Recognising those in

to provide ongoing interest enabling Rotary to carry out various projects, both locally

The recipients of the Immortals Awards were Claire Morrison, Val Morris, Mavis Shaw, Rory and Sue Milne, Lorraine Nichol, Fiona Whatham, Dr Tony Plummer and wife Vera, Sally Dover, Barbara Arathoon. Terry and Kay Fogg, and Karen Pittman were unable to attend the presentation and will be awarded their Immortals Badges at a later date.

It’s a YES for Australia

AUSTRALIA has officially become the twenty sixth country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. On a historical day on Thursday last week, the House of Representatives passed the bill that has enabled same-sex couples to marry in Australia. The first legal same-sex marriages will take place in Australia from 9 January 2018 after AttorneyGeneral George Brandis stated that couples had to give one month’s notice of their intention to marry. However, after Governor-General Peter Cosgrove signed the bill into law on Friday, all existing marriages performed overseas will be recognised at midnight on Friday night. In a day full of drama, the lower house officially voted on the bill that had come about through the successful “yes” vote in the recent plebiscite where 61.6% of those who

completed the survey, voted in favour of allowing samesex marriage in Australia. The federal seat of Paterson, which encompasses most of the News of the Area’s geographical reach, had a stronger “yes” vote than the national rate with 65.5% and this was supported by federal member Meryl Swanson in the official vote in parliament on Thursday. In an unusually strong show of united support in the House of Representatives, only four members officially voted “no” while ten members, including exPrime Minister Tony Abbott, abstained from voting. In the end, the final vote was an emphatic result. In scenes unseen before, the public gallery celebrated the historic moment by singing the chorus of The Seekers timeless classic “I Am Australian”. Simon Tarrant, a Paterson born and raised man, told News Of The Area, “This

By Rachael VAUGHAN has been the toughest few months of my life and has taken an immeasurable toll on not only me, but my community.” “I was so happy when the survey results were announced and then again when the legislation went through, but the main feeling was relief and exhaustion.”

“I couldn’t match the energy of a lot of my community simply because of how much this has affected me.” “I’m looking forward to moving on in a more equal and just Australia where we can all enjoy a level playing field,” he said.

Cusack’s preferred option for Mambo Wetlands is what?

AROUND THE REGION

Dear News Of The Area, RECENTLY you quoted the opinions of Catherine Cusack MLC concerning the sale ‘by mistake’ of part of the Mambo wetlands. She nominated options for reversing her government’s ‘mistake’. Her first option is that the developer should ‘hope for Labor to be elected in 2019 delivering a windfall profit to the developer’. What does that mean? Is she referring to a buyback of the land, either by negotiation or compulsory acquisition, by a future Labor government? If so, she should be aware that the determination of compensation following

the compulsory acquisition of land in NSW is governed by the Land Acquisition (Just Terms Compensation) Act 1991. It doesn’t matter which political Party is in government, the heads of claim for the determination of compensation are the same for all NSW governments (and Local Government). So how is this ‘windfall’ supposed to happen? I can only assume that Catherine Cusack either hasn’t read the Land Acquisition Act or doesn’t understand it. Or was her statement nothing more than a cheap attempt to undermine the efforts of the Member

for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, to return the land to public ownership? This is what Kate has been advocating since September 2016 and can be achieved by the compulsory acquisition of the land as a ‘Nature Reserve’. Catherine Cusack’s preferred option is to pass the the buck onto Port Stephens Council. Typical. If she genuinely cared about this issue, why didn’t her government act on the pleas of residents and not go ahead with the sale in the first place? Grant Kennett Corlette

Opposing view on Fingal Bay Bypass

Covering: Port Stephens - EAST WARD. The Tomaree Peninsula.

Dear News Of The Area, IT is apparent that Paul Attard, (Opinion in Bay News Of The Area 7 December 2017) is light on facts and heavy on paranoia that some expenditure in our area might not advantage him. In dealing with the facts, Mr Attard has apparently not researched where the expenditure for the projects he mentions comes from. Firstly, the Fingal Link Road that he opposes is a Port Stephens Council Project and as such is funded by Council Funds and grants. The upgrading of Nelson Bay Road and the Light Rail come under State Government administration. This being the case, how could the construction of the Link Road hinder the introduction of Attards proposals.

In relation to his concerns regarding the destruction of wildlife habitat, he has obviously not walked the proposed route of the Link Road as the majority of the route is over an already widely cleared fire trail and fringes on the Nelson Bay Golf Course, the Water Conservation area and a number domestic housing areas and would do little to obstruct passage of wildlife. In regard to Attard`s comments, “The Link Road, saving a few people several minutes of their shopping time” Once again he is light on facts. I suggest he visit the area and inspect the traffic flow. The residential population, the caravan park population, the surf club, the retirement village and the number of residents who reside in it, combined with the related essential

services and employment. The fact that the majority of residents and patients are not originally from Fingal Bay and may advantage many Shire families at some stage. Many of the local bus routes terminate at Fingal Bay. The proposed link road would also be utilised by many Shoal Bay residents to access the Salamander and Taylors Beach shopping precincts. Mr Attard might acquaint himself with more accurate facts before attempting to mislead his readers, who in many instances have assumed much of his submissions are based on facts as opposed to inaccuracies. o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

My mum has gone crazy with homemade Christmas decorations. Our house looks like something out of the Blair Witch Project. Help! Miss KN, Raymond Terrace Dear Miss KN,

I BLAME this pressing problem on the DIY generation. Everything changed when reality TV came into our lives. Suddenly we are all experts in trades that should take many years of on-the-job training and accredited qualifications. Now, men and women of the suburbs reckon they can build a state-of-the-art cubby house in two hours with three pallets, a roll of hessian and a staple gun. It gets worse, of course. Every Jack and Jill from the Terrace to Bulahdelah thinks they can buy a run-down shack and ‘flip it’ in five weeks in order to gain a cool $200,00. Women are getting their hair cut into stylish bobs and they are feigning Canadian accents saying things like, “That paint really makes the room pop!” In the grand scheme of things, your mum’s foray into homemade Christmas decorations is pretty tame, though I do know how embarrassing it is when the guy at Bunnings asks your mum to produce identification because she’s buying up all the gold and silver spray cans like a cross between one of the local ‘boys in da hood’ and Glenda the good witch. The only other positive I can see is that the money she saves will be usefully redirected towards your Christmas gifts. Aaaargh . . . I just had a terrible thought. Maybe she is making those as well. Just imagine when you open your gifts this year. You’ll receive a crocheted IPhone case (how cool), a pair of bedazzled denim shorts (fashion disasters always return if you wait long enough), and maybe you’ll even score a fancy new piece of contemporary art constructed from melted down forks, welded coathangers and pieces of silver-sprayed fishing line (what’s not to love?). I hope you survive the festive season, Miss KN. I’ll be thinking of you while I pop a few rum balls. Carpe diem, Jasminda

The program was funded by the NSW State Government and the students who participated were congratulated by the management team at WesTrac as well as Scot MacDonald Parliamentary Secretary for Planning Central Coast and Hunter and Member of the Legislative Council. Scot MacDonald said, “The funding is a demonstration of the NSW Liberal National Government’s commitment to supporting youth employment opportunities in the Hunter, “I was particularly pleased to hear how the $73 billion infrastructure investment by the Government is underpinning economic activity and jobs in

the region. “High school students of Port Stephens who are keen on a career in the heavy vehicle and electronics industries are well placed by this excellent program and I thank WesTrac, State Training Services and the surrounding High Schools for their successful collaboration and involvement in the project,” he said. Craig Baumann the Foundation’s Chairman told News Of The Area, “For me, it is heartening to see these young men come out of a program with real skills, a demonstration of being able to work in a safe manner and proof that they are committed to learning for their future

careers. “Outcomes like these don’t just happen, they are driven by the commitment of the team behind the program, the collaboration of many parties, including the government funding which made it possible, and most importantly, the participants reaching up and taking advantage of the opportunity presented to them,” he said. The Foundation hopes to be able to make this program available to students again in 2018 allowing students to gain real life hands on experience and qualifications which will give them a competitive edge in the workplace.

Get on with the Bypass Dear News Of The Area,

which gives preference to traffic on Shoal Bay Avenue. IT is very obvious Paul Attard (Opinion in 7 December, Bay News Of The Area) does not live in Fingal Bay. In peak periods it can take us from 20 to 30 minutes to get from Fingal Bay to Nelson Bay, and personally I don’t think the traffic lights will make much difference, especially on the current sequence,

virtually an hourly bus service to the Newcastle, but very few use it to go to the Airport - certainly not enough to warrant the expense of a Light Rail, and in any case it would be useless unless it went all the way to Newcastle. Come on Mr Mayor. Live up to your election promise and get on with the Bypass.

The Fedz rock the Spinner

By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE Spinning Wheel Hotel in Raymond Terrace has Live Music on the weekends, usually solo artists.

This weekend however, they have booked a band to play, and it is definitely one to check out. The Fedz is an exciting three-piece covers band

playing all your favourite songs from the seventies, eighties, nineties, and through to the present day. The Fedz have had a lot of experience playing in the

live music scene in Newcastle and Port Stephens over the past twelve years and are guaranteed to put on a toetapping show. The Fedz consist of three experienced musicians, James Body, Lead Vocal and bass guitar, David Rudder lead vocal and guitar, and John Shelton on drums and backing vocals. James Body started his musical career in the Australian Army playing all over the country as a piper in the Australian Army Pipes Band. On leaving the Army he took up the bass guitar. During the show he will be playing bass guitar, bagpipes, acoustic guitar and singing lead vocal. James is looking forward to the challenges of playing as a three-piece band. David Rudder has been playing and performing music in the Newcastle Music scene on and off since about the age of 20 and is an experienced

and powerful guitar player. David will be playing rhythm and lead guitar, bass guitar and singing lead vocal and backing vocals. John Shelton just loves his music and is an extremely talented drummer, who was a founding member of the

Covers Band 24 Hours before joining The Fedz. The Fedz are looking forward to playing the Spinning Wheel Hotel on Friday 15 December, get down and support the Spinning Wheel Hotel and their love for live music.

q The Fedz are sure to impress this Friday night at The Spinning Wheel Hotel.

Sheer Grit Returns

By Geoff WALKER

THE popularity of Arthur Murdoch’s classic book ‘Sheer Grit’ was such that original copies sell for around $200. Even the second edition, hardcover copies, go for well over $100. But, dear reader, we are getting ahead of ourselves so it’s perhaps best to wind back the clock to the Great Depression years of the 1930s to begin our tale. Arthur Murdock was a working class man who decided to carve out a living by mining shell grit from the shoreline and holes around the Island at Fingal Bay. In those times, people kept poultry in the backyard. They [the chooks] needed shell grit in their diet to help grind up the food and to provide calcium for the eggshells. Hardware and produce merchants sold it by the bag and Arthur supplied them. Arthur’s story is a marvel of descriptive prose for a person of scant education. His narrative could very well rival that of A B Facey’s blockbuster ‘A

Fortunate Life’ which ended up as a school textbook and a film. Murdoch paints a broad picture of life in those times. He describes the village of Nelson Bay, the fisherman, how he constructed his hut and jetty and rowed and towed his grit up Tilligerry Creek. The lonely lighthouse keepers get a mention as do the swarms of mosquitoes and the dangerous shifting

sands of the spit which joined the Island to the mainland. The second edition of ‘Sheer Grit’ (2000 copies) was published by Blue Cow Press in Nelson Bay and sold out. It is now back in print in soft cover and is available for a mere $20 at Tanilba Newsagency (that NOTA know of) and no doubt other outlets in Port Stephens.

CHRISTMAS is a time for giving, charity and goodwill. Many charities enjoy the public’s generosity at this time of year, and for many families, this is extremely helpful. But what about our disadvantaged animals? Or the animals that were a good idea for a present at the time, but didn’t turn out to be a good idea at all? Well, Nelson Bay residents Rachael Roberts and Neville McDermott are coming to their rescue. Rachael told News of the Area, “We are seeking any donations suitable for dogs of all sizes, cats, kittens, goats, pigs, horses and rabbits including toys, treats, beds, food, grooming supplies or anything that helps the shelter out, but mainly makes the animals time in the shelter a bit more special and exciting for them over the Christmas period.” The shelter that Rachael is referring to is the RSPCA’s Rutherford shelter. “We are doing it as both of us are huge animal lovers and we don’t have a big enough property or home to be able to adopt any of them

ourselves,” she said. “It breaks our hearts thinking of them all in there without a forever home and families to spend Christmas with, so we wanted to do something to help in whatever way we can and this is what we thought of,” Rachael added. Rachael and Neville have always taken a bag of toys to the Rutherford shelter each Christmas, but wanted to try and do that little bit more this year by involving the local community.

“We have been buying items ourselves over the last few months but would love the public’s help to step it up and make a bigger impact for these gorgeous animals,” Rachael said. Caring for animals has come as second nature for Rachael and Neville. Not only has Rachael previously worked as a vet assistant, but both have helped run a wildlife and kangaroo refuge previously in Wagga Wagga. If you would like to donate items or make a financial donation to the appeal, please contact Rachael on 0431120959 or rachael646@ hotmail.com

Scholarships for Women

By Marian SAMPSON

PORT Stephens Council are introducing three scholarships for women, aged over 16, of $1000 each as a part of Port Stephen’s International Women’s Day celebrations. The scholarships are

designed to assist women in areas such as education, sport and culture with a link back to benefiting the community of Port Stephens. Port Stephens Councillor Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “These scholarships would not

have been possible without the efforts of past councillor Sally Dover who has always been a champion of women.” The scholarships can be used by Port Stephens women to cover some of the out of pocket expenses that they may face in reaching their career goals.

Belinda Johnson of Anna Bay Micro Greens is one Port Stephens woman who is planning to apply for the scholarship, “If successful with the application I would use the money to build my website which would educate people about the health benefits of

From Austin’s to Volkswagens, and Vintage to Veteran there are plenty of cars that the members of this club are proud to own. The Club held its Annual General Meeting recently and they were proud to announce that members had enjoyed 96 events in the year including a fun run to Nundle. With 110 members the club is growing with members joining along with their Jags, Mercs, old Holden Utes, Ford Capri’s and even Vintage “Woody” trucks are on the membership role. Charles Dobson told News Of The Area, “I have a 1971 Capri and a 50 Austin A40.” While Laurie Toscano said, “I started work as a mechanic and I have a VW Roadster, I am a VW man at heart,” he said. Both Laurie and Charles were foundation members of the association and are still actively involved in the events and activities of the association. You can find out more about the Port Stephens Classic Automobile Association at www.pscaa. org.au. there, and make whatever you care about your career.” “These scholarships are one way that Council is helping women to realise their dreams,” she said. Future For Port in Collaboration

By Marian SAMPSON

THE business community came together last week for a Business Leaders Lunch to hear from Dr Sarah Parsons the Pro Vice Chancellor and Project Leader of the IF project at Newcastle University. Dr Parsons challenged businesses to collaborate, innovate and use a model where together Port Stephens can create a hub of shared learning which will create a greater competitive advantage for the region. She challenged the community to assist young people to build their businesses here in Port Stephens, start them locally and grow them globally. Dr Parsons said, “All the pieces of the puzzle are

here, we just need to be more attractive.” She believes that connected collaboration is the way of the future, and we now need to create a future for Port Stephens. Ms Parsons said, “Communities everywhere are doing it and those that do it well will create talent pipelines for youth and use their local universities as an engine room for regional growth.” The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects are experiencing a 75% increase in jobs and yet on 16% of our youth are studying STEM. The model which Dr Parsons believes will work for our region centres on leadership, collaboration and connectivity with the key

factors of ideas, culture and infrastructure, market access, talent, financial capital and crowd support being a strong framework to work from. Port Stephens Councillor Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “It was fascinating to learn about how cities such as Canberra have revamped themselves through smart marketing campaigns. “It really got many of us thinking about some of the future possibilities for Port Stephens when it comes to innovation and technology. “It was thought provoking,” she said. “So many business representatives who were there told me they too, were inspired to think about the role they can play in future processes to progress Port Stephens,” Cr Abbott said.

Scouts site a popular location By Geoff WALKER

TILLIGERRY Scouts backyard is gaining in popularity as a camping venue. Some time back it became something of a ‘Tent City’ as scouting groups merged there for a weekend of outdoor activities. It came alive again recently as Lake Macquarie Ramblers rocked into town with their motor homes for a weekend. “Why the scouts’ site?” This is what we asked the group as it relaxed in the newly constructed outdoor shed. The group was of the general opinion that they

preferred non commercial venues such as caravan parks as they could cluster together and not be limited by endless regulations. President Steve Basey puts it this way, “We have been going for some 30 years and our reputation is everything to us.” “We are completely self contained and take away everything we bring.” “In fact, we make a point of leaving each venue we visit better than when we arrived. “At Tanilba we raked up leaves and branches and picked up anything left around the property,” he said.

“On top of this, local businesses do very well out of us. The ‘Op’ shops are popular with the ladies and we eat out at local clubs and restaurants. I estimate that we would spend well over $1000 on our weekend in Tilligerry,” he added. The ‘Ramblers’ keep their destination points limited to about a 50km radius from their home base and are affiliated with a broader motor home group if individual members wish to spread their wings. Recent destinations have been Dooralong and Broke.
