Mayor
Ryan Palmer
takes the lead By Charlie ELIAS
VOWING to work for the community from day one, newly elected mayor of Port Stephens Ryan Palmer was true to his word on Sunday morning, out and about in Nelson Bay CBD talking and listening to the people. For the 30-year-old Nelson Bay father-of-two, it has been a fascinating last 12 months, emerging from relative obscurity to become only the second ever popularly elected mayor of Port Stephens. And what’s more, Mr Palmer performed beyond all expectations, earning enough votes to secure positions on council in East Ward for running mates Glen Dunkley and Rory Milne. “The Port Stephens Council I will lead will be one of inclusiveness and

openness,” Mr Palmer declared. “The very first thing I will do as mayor is to get all nine elected councillors together and discuss our plans for the next three years for the common good of the community. “I am not saying we will agree on everything, nor am I saying it will be easy; what I am saying is that I will work to ensure open communication and a common respect for fellow councillors, council staff and all citizens.” Mr Palmer, who has lived all his life in Port Stephens is married with two children, said hard work and a positive election campaign was the cornerstone to his emphatic victory. “Twelve months ago I decided to stand and in that time I have met with business people, volunteers,

community groups and everyday mums and dads to find out what issues most concern them. “It didn’t take too long to realise that roads, parks, garbage, infrastructure and open and honest dealings were still on top of the list.” Mr Palmer said he could not have achieved the result without the strong army of supporters, friends and family. “I have had an unbelievably strong team of supporters who have worked for drainage in Shoal Bay, this will go some way to alleviating the problem. “Council has increased drainage capacity at Bullecourt Street by installing a new set of pipes alongside existing pipes and a new storm water outlet at the foreshore,” Mr Maretich said. “Residents will notice that drainage in the immediate vicinity of Government Road and Shoal Bay Road will improve once works are complete. “These works will also relieve the hydraulic load on the entire system, meaning there will be minor drainage improvements for the entire Shoal Bay area,” he added. Council currently has $800,000 of works allocated to drainage projects in Shoal Bay, with long-term plans to further increase capacity across the network,” he said. “These planned works include upgrades to drainage at Horace and Rigney streets, where minor works have already been undertaken, as well as upgrades for drainage in Tomaree Street, which is planned for this financial year,” he added.

The works cost $900,000 in total, with $500,000 of funding allocated to the project from Council’s $6 million loan for infrastructure projects across Port Stephens. FINDING care for your children while you work can be difficult and large centres don’t always suit individual family needs. Family Day Care is an alternative to traditional child care centres. Family Day Care is a small group education and care environment, where educators operate from their own home. The model is great for educators because they can tailor their hours to suit their lifestyle. Karyn Powter, Port Stephens Council’s Family Day Care Managing Coordinator told News Of The Area, “There is a huge need for more day care providers in Port Stephens, particularly for before and after school care and for the 0-5 age group.” There is particular need for carers in Salamander Bay, Anna Bay and Medowie with people seeking placements for their children, where there are no, or limited spaces available to suit their commitments. “There are opportunities for educators in any area of Port Stephens,” she said.
Family Day Care has been operating in Port Stephens for over 25 years and supports approximately 90 educators in providing personalised, professional education and care to children aged from birth to 12 years in a safe home environment. Port Stephens Council is currently recruiting educators who are qualified or working towards their qualification to join the team. Emily Tisdell had been working in the childcare sector for two years before taking on the positive challenge of opening her own Family Day Care Centre, Em’s Wiggles and Giggles Family Day Care. Emily Tisdell told News Of The Area, “I have always wanted to be an early childhood educator.” She believes that children in Family Day care should have care equal to that provided in childcare centres. “However the bond created between the educator and the child, and the educator and the family is much closer,” she said. Anyone interested in considering a career as a Family Day Care provider should contact Port Stephens Council.

Ride for Down’s Syndrome
By Charlie ELIAS
A PORT Stephens motorbike contingent will take part in this year’s Scrapheap Adventure Ride, raising much-needed funds for Down’s syndrome. A total of 15 bike riders will head to the tiny NSW country town of Tingha, near Inverell, from 29 September to 1 October. It’s a 2,000km round trip, traversing predominantly back roads and calling into small rural towns along the way. The adventure ride is a unique fundraising event which involves motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country purchasing a bike for no more than $1000 and doing it up for a ride through the Aussie outback all in the name of charity. For two of the Port riders, the annual event, now in its eighth year, is about camaraderie, fun and raising money for a worthwhile cause.
Rob Mason, from Soldiers Point, will be riding his 1978 Honda XL. “I originally got involved a few years ago through a friend,” Mason said. “It is a great concept … I have kids in the wider family with Down’s syndrome so it really struck a chord.” Tanilba Bay’s Damien O’Toole has this year upgraded from his Postie bike to a 1982 Yamaha XT 250. “I have known Perry Gilsenan, a double leg amputee who founded the ride, for many years from back when I was living in Sydney,” O’Toole said. “The event has grown quite considerably since its inception, increasing from about 20 riders in 2009 to over 200. “It has also become a major fundraiser for Down’s syndrome sufferers, heading towards the $1 million mark.” Anyone interested in donating can go to mycause. com.au.

Nick Ledingham, a retired solicitor, past president of Tomaree Probus Club, and Corlette resident, has been appointed as a director of Probus South Pacific, the governing body of Probus clubs for Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. “I joined Tomaree Probus when my wife and I

It also publishes the ‘Active Retirees’ magazine, and offers travel insurance which solves some of the problems which retirees can face when seeking travel insurance.
Dear Miss BW, I used to ask my dad what he wanted for Father’s Day and he would always say that he just wanted me to be happy. Talk about pressure! Who can live up to that unrealistic expectation? I do, however, think it’s nice to give something that can’t be bought.
Maybe try a sonnet that expresses your deeply entrenched resentment over the favouritism he shows towards the eldest child (poetry should be angsty). Or how about some slam poetry that unleashes your inner fury about his unrealistic expectations and the way he lives vicariously through his children? Listen to Eminem first to get the right level of paranoia and aggression.

Danial Thain has left the Bay
By Mandy ELLIS
MIXED emotions amongst crew and well wishers were obvious, as rescue vessel PS40 Danial Thain left Port Stephens for the last time. Danial Thain was escorted by a flotilla of vessels drawn from numerous emergency services in Port Stephens as it began its journey to Brisbane to be deployed as a training vessel with its new owners, ECA Maritime College. Danial Thain was delivered to Port Stephens in 1999 after having given service on the Scottish Coast with the Royal National Lifeboat Institute for 21 years as “Spirit of Tayside” out of the port of Broughty. Danial Thain was involved in hundreds of rescues, four of which saw her crews recognised for major National
Courage Awards including a Medal of Valour presented to Coxswain Laurie Nolan. During her time at MRPS (almost 16 years) along with other Marine Rescue Port Stephens vessels, over 2,000 rescues have been performed saving over 4,400 lives and $230m value of vessels. Unit Commander, Lee Uebergang told News Of The Area, “Only by the generosity of donors was the Port Stephens Unit able to acquire the Danial Thain in 1999 and since then it has served those offshore and inshore with distinction and played a major role in making the Port Stephens waters as safe as possible.” “The replacement in 2016 with the fast rescue vessel PS31 John Thompson allows the highly trained volunteer rescue crews to get to vessels needing assistance
at over 30 knots depending on sea conditions. The John

First and Second World Wars in the defence of Greece.” Mr Carpenter, who enlisted in 1934 and joined the 2nd AIF in 1939, said he had a great affinity with the Greek people. “My service went beyond Greece. I also served in Palestine, Crete, Libya and returned home for the defence of Darwin,” the 100-year-old said. “I have been fortunate to have lived a fulfilling life at Newcastle since my exit from the Army in 1946.” Father Nicholas Scordilis delivered the prayer while members of the Nelson Bay RSL including Tom Lupton, Russell Durrant and Norm Cason participated in the service. Also present was Bay doctor Jim Papadopoulos, Diggers club manager James Gregoratos and local Consul
Geoff Antoniades, who spoke of the close bond between the two nations. “Australia has been a destination for immigrants from Greece since colonial times, but it was our shared experience especially during the campaigns of 1941 which added a new dimension to that relationship, a bond that we see in the faces of veterans when they return to Greece and Crete, and in the lives of Greek families who have made Australia their home,” he said. “In 1941 Greece was the last country in mainland Europe holding out against the fascist invasion. Since the Italian invasion in 1940 the forces of the British Empire, including Australia, had been supporting the gallant Greek resistance. “The Australians fought their first major action in Greece at Vevi Pass from 11-13 April 1941. In near blizzard conditions, the
Dodecanese Regiment and the 21st Greek Regiment fought beside the 2/4th Battalion and the 2/8th Battalion from Victoria to hold the fort. “Since the war, Greece and Crete have become places of pilgrimage for the Australians who fought there.” He said that Australian veterans had been proud to add Greece and Crete to the unit banners they carry on Anzac Day and to the memorials in city suburbs and country towns that remember their service. “It is in honour of those memories of Greek and Australian courage, and to commemorate the hundreds of Australians who lie in the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Phaleron, on the outskirts of Athens, and beside the sparkling waters of Suda Bay, we dedicate this very special plaque.”

Courtroom Victory over Water Pollution
BUILDERS in Port Stephens are being reminded of their responsibility to protect the environment after a company was fined $18,000 for water pollution offences at Seaside Estate, Fern Bay. The matter was heard by Newcastle Local Court on Monday 28 August, where the building company was found guilty of multiple pollution offences, fined and ordered to pay Council’s legal costs. Nicholas Jones, Council’s Acting Coordinator Environmental Health and Compliance, says it’s a good
result for ratepayers. “Council fined the building company for not having adequate sediment controls in place, which allowed sand and soils to enter the stormwater pits on multiple sites at Seaside Estate, Fern Bay,” Mr Jones said. “This result sends the message to all builders that they have a responsibility to protect our precious natural environment here in Port Stephens,” he added. Mr Jones said builders need to make sure they uphold their responsibilities
throughout the construction period. “This particular builder took the time to install sediment controls, but failed to make sure they were maintained for the life of the construction,” Mr Jones said. “Council takes environmental breaches like this extremely seriously. If builders are unsure about their responsibilities under the environmental legislation, they can contact us here at Council,” he added.

When art is not art
By Marian SAMPSON
WHILE there has been an increase in aerosol artworks in public spaces in the area, there is one group which volunteers to keep Port Stephens graffiti free. The Port Stephens Graffiti Action Team (PSGAT) has expressed serious concern in relation to the desirability of aerosol art on buildings, attributing it to encouraging graffiti. The team and members of the community felt that the graffiti that was in evidence in 2009 left the area looking downtrodden, lawless and threatening. Graffiti at the time was costing Council and businesses huge sums to remove. The team started work in 2009 to eradicate a breakout of graffiti that had pervaded the area for some time. A spokesperson of the PSGAT who asked to remain unnamed for security reasons, told News Of The Area, “Since 2009, our team has been out early in the morning every week to remove tags and other graffiti as soon as they are applied.” The PSGAT believes that street aerosol art has to be of
a particularly high standard and applied by a very skilled artist to be of universal appeal. PSGAT believe that more often than not aerosol art can be threatening in subject, and cartoon-like application, that detracts rather than contributes to the ambience of an area. “It also deteriorates rapidly over time, and requires repainting after a short period, which seldom happens and the community is left with an unattractive worn out or peeling wall,” the
spokesperson said. PSGAT has found that where they have removed graffiti, it discourages further graffiti at the same site. The group encourages artists with talent to apply their skills to art canvasses and display them in exhibitions and the interiors of buildings which are prepared to buy them. The group does not want to see a resurgence of graffiti on public and private property, nor the cost of this to the community.

Mr MacDonald said that under the NSW Government’s Saving our Species Program, this funding will go towards the ‘Port Stephens Koala Project’ in partnership with Port Stephens Council. “With today being National Threatened Species Day it’s great to able to mark it by securing this funding for our iconic koala,” Mr MacDonald said. “The NSW Government is also developing a whole-of-government koala strategy on the Chief Scientist and Engineer’s recommendation to help us to increase our knowledge about koalas, including their habitat, population trends and the threats to their survival.” The Port Stephens Koala Project will develop a fire management plan for koalas and their habitat in the Port Stephens area and to continue to engage the broader Port Stephens community in koala awareness programs. Wayne Wallis, Port Stephens Council General Manager, said “Koalas are undoubtedly one of Port Stephens’ most iconic and important natural assets and the threats to koala habitat and populations are very real and concerning. “This funding from the NSW State Government will support Council’s efforts toward engaging the community on awareness of koalas, their habitats and the challenges they face.” “This grant demonstrates the Government’s support of Council’s commitment to preserving koala habitat and protecting this treasured natural asset,” Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said this project is one of 19 across the state being funded this year to help secure the survival of this iconic species. “The NSW Government is committed to coordinating efforts to stabilise and ultimately increase the numbers of koalas across NSW. A whole-ofgovernment koala strategy is being developed to achieve this,” Ms Upton said. More than $1.8 million has already been invested in koala conservation across NSW through the Saving our Species program since 2012–13 with another $800,000 allocated for the 2017–18 budget.

Worimi Story told at Classical Concert Series By Marian SAMPSON
JACOB Ridgeway will be performing as a part of a signature series of twilight musical dialogues simply called “Australia” which
celebrates his local heritage. Jacob is of Worimi/ Kamilaroi descent. Sally Walker’s Twilight Musical Dialogues takes listeners on a musical exploration of the uncharted
heart of Australia. It brings together great Australian musical talent, from the Indigenous to the Multi-Cultural, in celebration of the dramatic landscape, and great cultural diversity

that gives structure to the intricate musical tapestry of our great Southern Land. Ridgeway’s work draws on a rich, local heritage to acknowledge the original custodians of the land. He will open with his original song, “Bullyman”; a musical storytelling inspired by an elder from The Stolen Generation. Jacob Ridgeway told News Of The Area, “I am really excited to be performing in front of a classical audience.” Jacob will be performing simply with his vocals and guitar to tell the story of his family’s experience as a part of The Stolen Generation. “Bullyman also delivers a response to the way in which Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders have been depicted in the media in Australia since the 1950s.” The character-driven piece delves into the life of a child stolen from her family, and her awakening to the wrongs in her life and what she had missed. “I would love to see Bullyman transformed into a
short film and I am currently working on building a monologue which will tell the story in a different medium,” he said.
Ridgeway will perform Bullyman at the Twilight Musical Dialogue on Friday 15 September 2017 at 6pm at Adamstown Uniting Church.

Goals Set and Achieved By Mandy ELLIS
TWO remarkable, dedicated and inspirational ladies competed at the PCA Australian Open in Newcastle on Saturday. Heidi Rhodes of Corlette competed in the Bikini category and Rebecca Humphries of Taree competed in the Ladies Figure category. Heidi, a busy mum of three, had to rethink her schedule and figure out how and where she could fit her training into family life, so whilst most of us are snuggled up in bed at 4.20am, Heidi is off to the gym for her daily
workout. Heidi said, “I wanted to be the best version of myself and the first change had to come from within, which involved my way of thinking and finding a way to put me first, being a mum, this was a tough change to make, I was determined to show not just myself, but my children that if you really want to achieve something, you find a way.” When asked about motivation, Heidi told News Of The Area, “My three boys, I want to set a good example for them to have selfdiscipline and respect, to set goals and to go get them.”
Rebecca Humphries, has regular coaching with personal trainer Joy Flint either via skype or at PT Fitness. At the age of 39 (six years ago), Rebecca was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and although not a stranger to competing, decided she would challenge herself to see if she could again make it to stage. Rebecca told News Of The Area, “As well as wanting to remain in good health, it has been proven that leading an active lifestyle slows the progression of Parkinson’s; I know myself if I get sick or
ease off regular exercise my symptoms get worse.” Rebecca and Heidi share the following sentiments regarding change, “For those
step in the right direction, moving more and making healthier food choices that can change your life”.
about to embark on a lifestyle change our advice is, don’t let anything hold you back, don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Its starts with just one

Knights Life Membership By Charlie ELIAS
AT the Newcastle Knights Old Boys day held last week, a club stalwart from Nelson Bay was bestowed the honour of Life Membership. Allan Bell is relatively unknown outside the inner sanctum of rugby league royalty, but his legacy of mentoring young players and coaches still lives on today at the sprightly age of 74. Typically, it is difficult for these people to boast about their behind-thescenes contributions, but it is nevertheless worthy of celebrating. The Johns brothers, Harragon, Robbie O, Muir, MacDougall, Gidley, Kimmorley, Butterfield, Glanville, Albert, Crowe, Peden, Marquet and Craigie
