LOCAL women Carol Compton and Jodi Cooper will be donning their hiking boots on 17 June, for a mammoth 16-day trek to raise money for children’s cancer charity, Camp Quality. Starting in Alice Springs, it is a 240km hike following the West MacDonnell ranges in the Northern Territory. Camp Quality has been operating since 1983, providing assistance to families of children aged 0-13 diagnosed with cancer. This may be financial assistance, fun trips away, and entertainment for children in hospital, as well as education programs in schools and putting families in contact with others on the same journey. Carol became involved in the charity through a friend and has been volunteering at the charity’s local office in Warners Bay for the last 10 years. She also performs a housekeeping role at the charity’s family holiday house in Salamander Bay. A veteran trekker, this will be Carol’s third major sponsored adventure, having previously walked the Kokoda Track and the Sandakan Death March in Borneo. Between Carol and Jodi, they have raised a staggering $12,500. Jodi wishes to acknowledge Steve Harding from Bayside

Music Video Makes A Splash By Marian SAMPSON

WHEN you’re looking for the perfect place to sit by a pool or on the beach sipping cocktails, it’s hard to go past Port Stephens. Hunter band Whiskey Business, who regularly play in the Bay, chose Rockpools at One Mile Beach as the perfect venue for their new music video of the song ‘For

So Long’ which is all about needing a holiday, relaxing, sitting by a pool and sipping cocktails. Locals are seen in the music video along with the band and some certainly made a splash. Anita Tresidder who is a member of the band and wrote the song told News Of The Area that she started the band as a creative outlet

to help deal with depression and the music has stopped her from shedding tears for the past five years. “Writing this song was also an achievement as I learned to play the guitar as I

wrote the music.” The band’s EP is entitled ‘A Good Kind Of Crazy’ which is how the band sees themselves; they don’t like to take themselves too seriously,” she said.

The song and music video will feature on Itunes, Google Play and Youtube and will not only showcase the band’s work but one of the loveliest pools at a resort in the Bay. Whiskey Business plays regularly at music festivals, around the Bay and Hunter region.

Shining Light on Local Economy

THE first ever Port Stephens Economic Profile has just been released, empowering residents and businesses with insights into the local economy and what makes it tick. Council’s Economic Development Unit compiled the profile in conjunction with Remplan, using key statistics on demographics, employment, industry, housing, tourism and business activity. Jane Perrin, Council’s Economic Development Coordinator, says it’s hoped the Economic Profile will promote a better understanding of the

state of the local economy and what this means for investment opportunities, economic impacts and the allocation of resources. “By increasing access to accurate and detailed statistics about Port Stephens, we can enable people to make more informed decisions about our region,” Ms. Perrin said. “I can see this profile being an invaluable resource for business owners, not-forprofit, community groups, educators, students and the wider community.” Ms. Perrin says it’s important to note that while these statistics are up-to-date as of 2017, they represent a

snapshot in time. “Council’s Economic Development Unit keeps a keen eye on the local economy and is constantly updating its datasets, which can be accessed by contacting us. “Part of our role in the Economic Development Unit is to promote a sustainable and diversified economy in Port Stephens. “We hope that by sharing this catalogue of available data, we can enable informed decisions that will lead to more investment and economic opportunities for our region,” Ms. Perrin added.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

We have purchased two acres, and ever since, friends and family have asked if they can store their boats, caravans and other assorted items on the land. Some have even started dumping their green waste and excess furniture. Recently a relative dumped a load of concrete and suggested we bury it. An acquaintance asked if he could store some things in our shed, and ended up unloading bricks and rubble under several trees. What should we do? Mrs JF and Mr GF, Anna Bay

The thing is, most people purchase an average-sized block, because they don’t want the hassle of mowing acres or caring for 5,000 endemic plants; they also don’t want the cost of a two-acre block. What they do want, however, is a little taste of the great outdoors, but only during their annual leave and long weekends. That’s why they buy boats, trailers, motorbikes, quads and caravans. You know, you absolutely can’t store that stuff on the grassy verge past the front fence. Triathletes, retirees, dogs, kids playing cricket and council workers get pretty miffed about obstructions on their thoroughfare. Your acres are a perfect solution. Out of mind. Out of sight. Have you costed storage sheds recently? Not cheap, you know. Have you noticed how much tip fees are? I suggest you familiarise yourself with the 30-odd page Community Services document produced by Port Stephens Council (like I just did). No wonder your land is being treated as the local dump. You need to get shrewd. Purchase a gate, a weighbridge, a fluorescent vest and an EFTPOS machine. If you are going to be treated as the waste transfer station, you may as well collect the funds that go with it. No payment and a For Sale sign gets slapped on the offending vehicle. I’m pretty sure your troubles will soon be over.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Sisters Are Doing for Themselves Nomination for a local business woman for the 2017 Telstra Business Women’s Awards on its 23rd year.

MEMBER for Port Stephens Kate Washington MP has called on businesses across Port Stephens to nominate a local business woman for the 2017 Telstra Business Women’s Awards. The 23rd annual Telstra Business Women’s Awards seeks to raise the profile of women in business by recognising and rewarding their courage, leadership and creativity. “The business women I speak to remind me of the importance of supporting and mentoring other women in business. This is a perfect opportunity to show a local business woman your support and encourage

other women to pursue their business goals,” Ms Washington said. “Please look around your workplace and think about the women who inspire you. It’s those inspiring women who ought to be nominated.” Anyone can nominate a business woman they admire, with entries open until Thursday 15 June 2017 across five Award categories: Entrepreneur Award – open to owners with a 25 per cent share or more in a business they’ve been operating for a minimum of one year. For Purpose and Social Enterprise Award – open

to owners or employees that deliver positive social/ environmental change as their core mission. Public Sector and Academia Award – open to employees of government departments, educational institutions and statutory bodies. Corporate and Private Award – open to employees in the private and corporate sectors, including leaders and owners with less than 25 per cent share in a business. Young Business Women’s Award - Entrants in any of the qualifying categories who are aged 29 years or under as at 15 June

THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding Australians to stop and think before giving their personal details or hard-earned money to scammers this tax time. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said 48,084 scams were reported to the ATO between July and October last year. “We have already seen a five-fold increase in scams from January to May this year and typically expect further increases during the tax time period,” Ms Anderson said. “Already this year, the ATO has registered over 17,067 scam reports. Of these, 113 Australians handed over $1.5 million to fraudsters with about 2,500 providing some form of personal information, including tax file numbers. “One victim lost $900,000 to scammers over the course of several months, even borrowing money from family and

friends. “The large number of people lodging their tax returns means scammers are particularly active, so it’s important to keep an eye out for anything that looks suspicious and protect your private information.” Ms Anderson said Australians are generally good at catching and reporting scams, but some scams are harder to spot than others. “Scammers locate genuine ATO numbers from our website and project these numbers in their caller ID in an attempt to legitimise their call – a form of impersonation known as ‘spoofing’. While we do make thousands of calls per week to the community, our outbound calls do not project numbers on caller ID. If one appears, it’s most likely a scam. “People should be wary of emails, phone calls and SMS during tax time that claim to be from the ATO, even if it seems legitimate. “If you’re ever unsure about whether a call, text message or email is genuine,

call us on 1800 008 540. If it’s real, we will connect you with the right area of the ATO,” Mr Anderson said. If you think you or someone you know has fallen victim to a tax related scam, call the ATO on 1800 008 540 to make a report. For more information on how to verify or report a scam, visit ato.gov.au/scams or for updates on the latest scams, visit Scamwatch. Top tips to avoid tax time traps:

$10,000 Win for Port Family Feuders

Indeed, luck and opportunity would collide once and awhile! A dream not just came through!

By Marian SAMPSON

THE Pleym family has won $10,000 on the popular television show Family Feud. Claire Pleym has been watching Family Feud with her grandmother for as long as she can remember. When the show came back on air she kept her eye out for the opportunity to be on the show. It took around two years from applying to get to the audition and the producers contacted Claire while she was travelling in Europe asking for the family to

Explosive Local Larrikin’s Biography Launched By Marian SAMPSON

’GELIGNITE’ Jack, the larrikin best known for the antic of throwing gelignite out of his car window during the Redex Trials, is the colourful subject of a just released biography written by his son, Port Stephens local Phil Murray. Jack won the Redex Round Australia Reliability Trial without the loss of a single point in 1954. Phil wanted to explore the story of his father and in doing so uncovered the amazing larger-than-life story of Jack Murray. The Redex Trials were just one of Jack’s sporting outlets. He won 13 NSW Wrestling Championships,

and is considered by some to be the father of waterskiing in Australia as the founder of the iconic Bridge to Bridge ski race which is held annually to this day on the Hawkesbury. Local resident and former Port Stephens Mayor Bob Westbury water-skied with Jack in the early days of the Bridge to Bridge and remembers him fondly. Author of ‘Gelignite’ Jack Murray, Phil Murray, told the News Of The Area that writing the book was a personal journey where he found the facts and sorted them from the legend that was ‘Gelignite’ Jack’s colourful life. “The book also exposes the cultural changes from Jack’s days when it was considered a bit of a hoot to

throw gelignite and create small explosions in the main streets of towns, to how this behaviour would be treated in this day and age.” “Dick Smith wrote the Foreword for the book about ‘Gelignite’ Jack’s life, as it is a real honour to Jack’s memory,” he said. Dick Smith said, “This is one of the best books I’ve read in years.” A small granite monument sits on the foreshore of Shoal Bay noting the impact that ‘Gelignite’ Jack had on the community of the bay. Copies of the book ‘Gelignite’ Jack Murray, An Aussie Larrikin Legend, can be found at New Holland Publishers and Booktopia. com.au.

Thriving Winter Oysters

WITH an unusually warm water temperature (up as much as three degrees this autumn) local farmers are seeing their oysters thriving. It is common for Sydney rock oysters to lose condition during winter but according to local grower Paul North,

Of The Area that “Grant Denyer was lovely, genuine and funny, he worked hard to get you to relax and talked with contestants on and off camera.” “I love the show so much and have always loved playing along at home with my Grandma.” “I recommend anyone who gets a chance to be a part of something like Family Feud should go for it,” she said. Claire’s Family loved being on Family Feud and the absolute highlight was winning the $10,000.

appear on the show. A week after they flew back into the country, they were in Melbourne recording Family Feud. Claire, husband Daniel, brother-in-law Benjamin, and her brother, Alex, appeared on the show for five consecutive nights. Claire’s grandmother watched the show from her home in Salamander Bay, watching the first episode, which she had recorded, four times before the family appeared for the second time. this year they are holding up well. “We can sell as many as we can harvest,” he said. “Supply problems in other states have created a shortage and demand is strong with upward pressure on prices.” “The other good news is that spat is catching very well and the juvenile oysters

are also putting on condition. This means that our stocks for the coming years will be greater than in the past,” he added. “We need some good news,” he said. “The wild weather a while back played havoc with the leases and the threat of an oyster virus had us worried but the way ahead now looks clear.” A taste test by News Of The Area found that all of Paul’s claims stacked up. Our reporter opened a dozen and found the oysters plump and tasty. Currently the shellfish sell for $3.50 each in local restaurants. At this price, it seems that somebody along the line is doing very well out of them. It’s not the humble growers. They get around $10 a dozen for them bagged at the markets.

King of the Box Expect bigger than ever surfing contest in August 2017!

By Mandy ELLIS AUSTRALIA’S best surfers will be hitting Port Stephens in August for the 2017 King of the Box surfing contest. This year will be bigger than ever thanks to some

amazing support from the local community. “Last year’s event was awesome and we were blown away by how many locals came down to spectate and support the event,” Teza Mckenna told News Of The

Area. “It’s really established itself as one of the best boutique events on the Australian circuit, and the wedging nature of the wave draws in surfers from around the country.”
