Keeping your cool in the heat By Jo FINN

WHEN you want to know where the top spots are to cool off in heatwave conditions, the best people to ask are the locals. Fishermans Bay is a popular spot for families with young children, and also great for snorkel diving. Local divers swim out to the ‘bommies’ and dive for lobsters and sea urchins. Shoal Bay Wharf is the “place to be” for teenagers who love to jump off the wharf and capture in-flight moments with their Selfie Sticks. For surfers, One Mile Beach and Birubi Beach are fantastic options. They are also popular with families as both beaches are patrolled

and also have cafés and shower facilities. Fly Point is a great spot for snorkel divers, but there can be strong currents at times, so adult supervision is important. With its calm conditions, Boat Harbour is a good choice for families. It also has barbecue facilities and is popular with ocean swimmers, SCUBA divers and snorkel divers. Nelson Bay Foreshore has a diverse range of activities including Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) and Kayak tours. Bay News Of The Area caught up with some of the area’s local young experts

who assisted with car jacks, emergency services, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Port Stephens Local Area Command officers, John Hunter Hospital ICU staff and Hunter Valley Private Hospital staff. Darren Ogilvie said his father-in-law was “surprised that he is that important”. The second message was a humble call for assistance in the mission to ‘Bring Brian Home’. Brian’s cottage is under construction and requires “hands on deck” and expertise to complete it. “What we need is a little bit of help to get the building to a stage where he can come home

after his rehabilitation,” Darren Ogilvie said. “That’s all he wants. He doesn’t want to go to a hospice or alternative accommodation.” Simone and Anthony Bramble are members of the ‘Bring Brian Home’ coordination team. “He is separated from his family and Rex [Brian’s adored dog], and all he wants to do is get home,” Mrs Bramble said. “His cottage is not finished, nor is it suitable to accommodate his current injuries,” she said. “This is the local community’s opportunity to assist; donate some spare change or volunteer your time or expertise to help

finish the cottage.” “He would be so appreciative of people’s help,” Darren Ogilvie added. “It will restore his belief in humanity.” Donations can be made at any Newcastle Permanent via: BringBRIANHome, BSB: 650 000, Account: 525 565 901. Alligators will be in the Bay AUSTRALIA Day revellers at Nelson Bay will be treated to a truly amazing experience to help celebrate the event’s 20th anniversary on Thursday, 26 January. Along with the many and varied activities at Fly Point, this year will feature for the first time ever seen in the Bay a visit from the Australian Reptile Park. If you have never

smiled at a crocodile, well here is your opportunity. Or you can pat an alligator, feel the scales of a python and photograph a lizard. These are just some of the animals to be paraded throughout the day. Nelson Bay’s Australia Day committee member Doug Cross said the extraordinary reptile show was just one of many attractions at this year’s

anniversary celebrations. “As in previous years, the day will kick off at 9am with a parade from Nelson Bay’s Laman Street to Fly Point, where the huge range of family friendly activities will proceed,” Mr Cross said. “Throughout the day we will have entertainment and official proceedings on the stage, while the younger ones will be treated to fun times with free jumping castles, pony rides and

a paralympian and gold medal winner from the 2012 Games, will give the Australia Day address. The day’s activities will conclude at 4pm following the Robyn Yvette School of Dance grand finale. A full program of events is available from the committee and there is plenty of parking at the top end of Neill Carroll Park for a gold coin donation.

giveaways. “And of course not to be missed this year is the exclusive Reptile Show – all of which is free to the public.” In addition to his welcome address, Port Mayor Bruce MacKenzie will perform a citizenship ceremony, and following on from the success of last year’s event, locals will be invited to reaffirm their allegiance to this great nation. Port Stephens ambassador Leisl Tesch,

Creevey’s in the Bay By Jewell DRURY HARRY Potter Fans will instantly recognise the name Colin Creevey, who was a huge fan of Harry Potter at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Sam Hawkins and Jess Rama are both Harry Potter fans and currently attend The Hunter School of The Performing Arts. On the same day that Alan Rickman, who played Professor Severus Snape, died from pancreatic cancer, the pair were brainstorming for a name for their musical duo. “As we reminisced on the movie we instantly knew that there could be no other name for our duo than The Creevey’s,” Sam Hawkins told Bay News Of The Area. Sam enters Year 11 this year and Jess will begin Year 12 at the Hunter School of the Performing Arts. The duo has been performing together for more than 18 months. songs from popular hits to old favourites. “We were going to have a band but decided to stay as an acoustic duo and incorporate Sam on percussion into our sets,” Jess Rama said.

“I play guitar and am on vocals and Sam is on guitar, vocals, drums and percussion,” Ms Rama added. Jess writes her own songs and the pair’s sound is smooth with an acoustic

formula that is reminiscent of a cross between Mumford & Sons and Taylor Swift. The duo can be enjoyed at various venues across the Hunter and on the Nelson Bay Foreshore on Friday

Ceremony. A RAAF flyover will also feature at Riverside Park. Meanwhile at Henderson Park, Lemon Tree Passage, a free barbecue breakfast, activities, live music and other entertainment including the Australian Army Band will feature at the family friendly event. The Karuah RSL Club will once again organise and host an event which includes cooking competitions, an auction of local produce, a thong throwing competition, bowls and live music. All money raised is donated to the Rural Fire Brigades of Karuah, North Arm Cove and Limeburners Rural Fire Brigades. Fireworks in the evening will cap off the day’s events. Feature events will be at Fly Point, Nelson Bay. Commencing with a street parade from 9am on Laman Street, Nelson Bay

WITH momentum growing for Australia’s day of nationhood celebration to change, the public holiday has become increasingly controversial in recent years. However, the fact remains that it is a gazetted public holiday that in many ways marks the end of the Australian summer, with students going back to school in the week following Australia Day. Port Stephens Council has many events organised in key spots to suit a wide range of interests this Australia Day, 26 January 2017. The centres of Nelson Bay, Karuah, Raymond Terrace, and Lemon Tree Passage will also be hosting free events for the community. Furever Homes Needed By Sarah STOKES PORT Stephens Cat Rescue desperately needs people to adopt cats and kittens. Currently they are overcapacity with 65 kitties in care, down from 80. This is their busiest time of the year being breeding season and people unfortunately dumping animals post-Christmas. Crystal Brown runs the charity from her home in Salamander Bay, managing a team of foster carers from Salamander down to Newcastle. Crystal told News Of The Area, “We would love to find our rescue cats good loving homes.” All the cats and kittens come vaccinated, desexed, microchipped, wormed and receive a flea treatment. It actually works out cheaper to adopt than get a ‘free’ kitten or to buy one when you factor in all the costs involved in responsible pet ownership. Kittens cost $220 or $400 for two, from 0-6 months. Adolescents (6-12 months) are $180 and adult cats over a year old cost $100. The cost is also taxdeductible. The message is clear: adopt don’t shop!

q

“Adopt us”.

q

Izzy, 13 and Rhiannon, 7 cuddle the kittens.

“Desexing and microchipping is so important; people need to keep their details up to date with the council,” Crystal said. An average litter is four or five kittens, so without desexing, this soon explodes into a glut of cats requiring homes. Donations are always needed and include food – wet and dry, cat litter, flea and worm treatments. These can all be placed in donation bins situated at Woolworths in Salamander Bay, Medowie and Raymond Terrace North; Greencross

Vets at Tanilba Bay and Cubbins Cattery at Salt Ash. Monetary donations are needed too – direct to the charity with details on their Facebook page. If you are interested in giving these furbabies a home, please contact Crystal, preferably via the Facebook page or email: catrescueportstephens@ outlook.com. You can also call 4984 3343. This reporter has seen the kittens pictured and can assure readers that they are absolutely paw-some!

Community Awards are to be announced and presented on Australia Day, 26 January, 2017. Mr Tony Gillespie has been nominated for Port Stephens Sportsperson of the Year, which recognises outstanding individual

sporting achievements and contributions to the wider sporting community. Mr Gillespie, a Taekwondo Chief Instructor, told Bay News Of The Area, “As a leader it is my responsibility to lead from the front.”

Nominated for Port Stephens Community Awards By Heather SHARP PORT Stephens residents nominated to receive an award in the annual Port Stephens Council

“So I do my absolute best for my team and my family of martial artists.” Mr Gillespie, who also runs Imugi Fit and was nominated by members of the fitness, support, and motivation group said, “Improved self-esteem and confidence in everyday life, the ability for them to function in life better is what’s most important to me.” Port Stephens Council established the awards to provide an opportunity to formally recognise the efforts and achievements of residents. A Young Citizen of the Year nominee, Miss Carissa Maher was nominated for the award for her academic and community

achievements while studying for the HSC and at the same living with the debilitating chronic illness Crohn Disease. Miss Maher told Bay News Of The Area, “This past year has been one of the most rewarding and successful times of my life and I am grateful that I was able to experience everything I have.” “It has really given me the chance, with the help of mentors, teachers, and family members, to use the skills that I have learned to help more people than I could ever imagine.” “It is important to me to not only achieve my own goals but to give to my local community and where possible be a voice to the

youth of today and for women.” Miss Maher has achieved so much, including first in all her HSC subjects, Medowie Christian School Dux, receiving the ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award, and participating as a Regional Minister in the prestigious YMCA’s Youth Parliament. There are five award categories including: Freeman of Port Stephens, Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Port Stephens Medal, and Sportsperson of the Year. Bay News Of The Area wishes all nominees the best of luck for the Community Awards.

Thriving Therapy By Jo FINN JUST up from Little Beach is a thriving oasis of endemic plants housed in a community facility called the Ngioka Horticulture Therapy Centre. Ngioka specialises in local and other native plants suitable for the Port Stephens area. “We grow native species which are then made available

to a range of groups including LandCare, government departments, developers, the Worimi people and, of course, the general public,” coordinator Steve Crooks said. Ngioka is a purposebuilt centre for people with disabilities. The plants are propagated and nurtured through Ngioka’s Horticulture

Therapy program which provides a supportive space for people with disabilities to learn skills under the guidance of experienced staff. People participating in the program are referred via a range of organisations and Mr Crooks described it as a “neutral service” open to any groups within the disability framework. Mr Rumble said he enjoyed taking part in the different programs on offer. “I like everything. I like the planting,” he said. Program Supervisor Jenny Megson has worked at the Horticultural Therapy Centre for almost nine years. She coordinates the

horticultural program as well as a range of other programs including the monthly disco, arts and crafts, cooking and musical activities. “I have a horticultural background, so the job is very rewarding,” she said. “But most of all I love seeing the guys enjoying themselves and developing new skills as well as socialising with other members of the community.” The Ngioka Horticulture Therapy Centre is reliant on funding and local residents

can assist in a number of ways. “Members of the public can buy our stock, which then helps to support and continue our programs,” Mr Crooks said. “Volunteers do not require any specific skill set and can get involved in maintenance and propagation activities.” For more information, call Ngioka on 4984 3487 or email ngioka@portstephens. nsw.gov.au.

Testing Time for Pensioners

By Heather SHARP

A NEW year and a new change to the Asset Test for Pensioners. Amidst the controversies of politicians claiming travel entitlements for personal business, and the Centrelink debt debacle, pensioners are being financially impacted by the Federal Government’s decision to change the Asset Test. Pensions that are affected include: Age Pension, Carer Payment, Disability Support Pension, Widow B Pension, and Wife Pension. The changes have been met with anger by some pensioners who say they are not fair and will make

their lives more financially difficult; while others say that the pension is a safety net and the assets test is fair and will support those in the community who are most vulnerable. In a reprieve for homeowners, the family home remains exempt from the assets test. Local resident Ms Jan Noake told News Of the Area, “Pensioners have worked hard during their adult life and paid taxes accordingly, yet now we are being made to feel as though we are bleeding the system dry.” “I worked for more than 50 years, paying taxes, and have budgeted for my retirement carefully, using my Super as far as it can be stretched, but am being

punished in a way for the reality that I may one day reply on the pension.” C o m p u l s o r y superannuation was introduced in Australia in 1992, so many Australians currently rely on a combination of superannuation and the pension. Ms Noake added, “To be told that my future pension will decrease because of a change in the assets test feels very unfair; it’s like the rules are being changed halfway through the game, but it’s too late for me to do anything about it.” If you need more information about your pension, contact Centrelink on 13 23 00.

State of The Art Golf By Jewell DRURY IN the early hours of Father’s Day 6 September, 2015 a fire swept through the Nelson Bay Golf Club and the adjoining restaurant, completely destroying it. Relocating into a temporary clubhouse and office in December 2015, the building of the new club commenced soon after. A “State of the Art” Clubhouse costing close to 10 million dollars is set to be completed as early as June

this year. The new Nelson Bay Golf Club is completely purpose built and will stand out as a Premier Club on the Tomaree Peninsula. The grand main entrance includes a Porte Cochere, a covered canopy where patrons can alight under cover, protected from the weather. The Functions Area has huge windows with beautiful views of the Tomaree and Yacaaba headlands. The function area will

have its own entry, bar and amenities as well as a landscaped courtyard, and an outdoor undercover area. Seating for more than 180 for a dinner function and 230 for a cocktail party, the area includes a dance floor and a stage. The Club will also house a sports lounge, an alfresco gaming area, a second gaming area, a bar area, a second lounge looking over the terrace and dining room as well as a kids indoor play area.

“A dedicated wedding ceremony site on the golf course will sit up high overlooking the entire course, incorporating champagne ceremonies with the Bridal Party being escorted around the Golf Course for wedding photos,” Ms Kelly said. Another focus of the new club is in the development of Kangaroo Tours and Golf Tours to international visitors as well as offering corporate ‘Stay & Play’ packages. “These packages will see us collaborating with local businesses including Moonshadow Cruises, Landmark, Mantra Aqua and

Port Stephens 4WD Tours and will be a great way of everyone pooling their resources to attract visitors to our area,” General Manager Trevor Harrison said. Membership is available and an announcement of a car giveaway will take place at the opening of the new club. The website is currently under reconstruction and the Club’s temporary facilities are operating and include a bar, full gaming area and restaurant open for lunch daily and dinner Friday and Saturday nights.

Peace Performance By Jewell DRURY

ANGELS were in our midst on Friday night and many were unaware of it.

An impartation of Peace was given to the people on the Tomaree Peninsula through a series of “Sacred Dances” given by two illuminated

angels who gracefully danced on the foreshore of Nelson Bay. The Peace Angels, a part of the Shanti Mission, are a

q “Kalikayama” and “Kalibolo” two ‘Peace Angels’ visited Nelson Bay on Friday night.

newsofthearea.com.au group of people of all ages and backgrounds, dedicated to anchoring and celebrating peace throughout the world. This is done through the mediums of performance, prayer and transformation. The Peace Angels offer products and services that support both local and international communities through education, creativity and service programs. Antoinette Sampson who is the Former Artistic Director of ATYP (Australian Theatre for Young People) as well as an acting teacher at NIDA is currently the Creative Director of Peace Angels. An annual performance at Pitt Street Mall at Christmas time and regular hospital visiting programs are all part

of the imparting of peace and creating an awareness that even though sometimes unseen, there are truly Angels in our midst. The Peace Angels programs are designed to bring a simple yet eloquent reminder of the power of peace – in the individual, the home, the family, the workplace, the community and the world. Sharon, known as her Angel name “Kalikayama”, and Joanne known as “Kalibolo”, were met with curiosity and smiles as small children and families were drawn to them for photo opportunities. “I have had lots of trauma in my life and I have finally come to a place of peace and forgiveness and it has

changed my life,” Joanne (Kalibolo) told Bay News Of The Area. “As well as imparting peace, we want everyone to know that we are not alone in this life, that we have unseen angels with us throughout our entire lives,” Kalibolo said. The Angelic duo believe that as they walked and danced, embodying peace, they were gifting back peace to the people of Nelson Bay. The Peace Angels can be seen every Friday night during the month of January at the Sacred Tree Markets on the Nelson Bay Foreshore. For further information go to www.peaceangels.com. au.

By Jewell DRURY RED Neds Gourmet Pies owner Barry Kelly is about to retire, at the age of 82, after serving Nelson Bay and beyond for the last 20 years. The iconic pie shop is synonymous with Australia’s most infamous Bushranger Ned Kelly. The lifesize statue of Ned Kelly out the front of the shop has become a favourite photographic opportunity for international tourists when they visit the Bay. Barry Kelly, the master pie maker, came up with the name “Red Neds” after seeing the connection that was born from his own last name being Kelly, and a combination of Ned Kelly and Ned’s father’s name being “Red.” Over the years the gourmet pie shop has proven extremely popular with locals and tourists alike and has gained a reputation as one of the best gourmet pie shops in Australia. Barry Kelly learned

his craft in the 5 star International Hotel the Park Plaza Hotel in Toronto Canada working firstly as a Food Cost Controller and later working alongside International executive Chef Fred Stahali from Switzerland. Red Neds Pies has a range of more than 52 pies, from a variety of beef pies including Beef Stroganoff with Sour Cream to Smoked Chicken with Camembert cheese as well as an amazing variety of fruit pies. Receiving more than 100 awards from Australia’s top baking competitions has given Mr Kelly the title of one of Australia’s leading pie makers. Bay News Of The Area met Mr Kelly during last week’s heat wave to discuss what the next season would look like for Mr Kelly after he retires. We found Mr Kelly in his kitchen, passionately making his next batch of amazing pies while everyone else was laying low, barely

surviving in the 42 degree heat. “One of the best parts of my job and something that I will miss most is hearing the compliments from people as they share with me that it’s the best pie they have ever tasted,” Mr Barry said. “I am looking forward to training the new owner of Red Neds as I share my recipes for each of the gourmet pies I have created over the years,” he added. On retirement, Mr Kelly plans to relax in his Anna Bay home with partner Margaret, reading books, some gardening and hopes to do a little travelling too. “Life is as long as a piece of string and I am on the tail end of that string; it’s time to do some of the things I’ve always wanted to do,” Mr Kelly said. o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Dear Jasminda, q

Sandra Ferguson first observed the weed.

PORT Stephens Council has replied to the the issue regarding seaweed which has continued to wash ashore at Birubi Beach over the holiday period. Council’s Community and Recreation Coordinator, Brock Lamont reiterated previous public statements in clarifying that the beached seaweed is a natural process, as is its eventual return to the ocean. “Seaweed which has dislodged and washed ashore is not unique to Port

Stephens. Nor is the way which we have dealt with the situation,” he said “Our ability to remove any beached seaweed is extremely limited. With this in mind, our approach has always been to be let nature take its course.” Also speaking today, the Department of Primary industry (DPI) Fisheries Program Leader, Marcus Riches, said the department had visited the site in recent days in light of the feedback from residents.

“DPI Fisheries officers have inspected seaweed washed ashore at the Northern end of Birubi beach and concluded it is most likely to have been deposited by natural processes, as often happens with a South-Easterly swell,” he said. “Seaweed can be dislodged from the sea floor during storm events and turbulent sea conditions, and can be transported over long distances before washing ashore.” “Dislodged seaweed which is washed ashore provides food for

invertebrates such as pipis, sand worms and crabs, which are important in maintaining healthy fish populations. The decomposing weed also delivers nutrients back to coastal ecosystems and as such it plays an important role in sustaining a natural and healthy marine environment.” “In this particular case, this includes the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park and Stockton Beach area, and is best left to be washed naturally back into the sea by the tide.”

Washington: Must Explain

Dear News Of The Area,

PORT Stephens Council must explain to residents how a diesel leak was able to enter a public park and then the Hunter River before it was noticed. There are stringent regulations around the storage of diesel. It's clear that there's been a failure of systems, a lack of care and lack of oversight in

order for this pollution event to have occurred. It's disappointing to see Port Stephens Council receiving yet another slip on the wrist for its poor environmental management. Our community is fed up. Boomerang Park is the oldest park in the Hunter. Port Stephens Council has already

OPINION

FROM your storying ‘Who Let The Dog’s Out’ Bay News Of The Area 12 January 2017. Dogs bark....it’s how they communicate. Some people just need to deal with it, it’s not that bad. Rachel Dee IF you lived next to a barking dog when you’re trying to sleep every night woken at 5am every morning then when the owners go to work I think you would think differently. We have put up with it for years not to mention having approached the owners on numerous occasions. No it’s bloody not fair. allowed significant development on site, it's been carved up ready to be sold off, now it's polluted the historic park. Council ought to be caring for the much-loved park, not treating it with contempt. Kate Washington State Member for Port Stephens

I am eight-years-old. I’m having a party soon and my dad suggested I write to you to see if you had any ideas on what we could do? Miss SL, Salt Ash OH, to be eight again. What a delightful stage of life. I’m trying to recall my own party at that age. It was definitely a backyard affair with a homemade cake and the obligatory game of Pass the Parcel. That’s what we did back in the day and from what I can remember we had a rollicking good time. But things have changed, and may I suggest not for the better. I can pinpoint it to a specific event. It was at a party with a child who looked remarkably like a young Donald Trump. The kid kept throwing himself on the ground and kicking and screaming when things didn’t go his way. He screamed when he didn’t win the Egg and Spoon race and made a complete jackass of himself during Pin the Tail on the Donkey (excuse my Americanism there, Miss SL, your dad will understand the pun). Instead of the parent saying, “You naughty little psychopath; go to your room”, they gave him a prize for being a jerk. That was the beginning of the age of entitlement, when parents started rewarding mediocrity and bad behaviour. At first it was just a Freddo Frog in every layer of the Pass the Parcel so no one missed out, and now we have event-managed parties for children. There are marquees and inflatable jumping castles, canapés and hired entertainment. There are personal assistants pandering to kids wearing tiaras. Sweet Miss SL, the world has gone a little bit mad. Buck the trend, little one. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with fairy bread and several games of Non-musical Statues. Your daddy will thank me.

Disability Services: Have Your Say PORT Stephens Council is seeking community input in the process of developing a Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP). The Disability Inclusion Action Plan will aim to help guide Port Stephens Council to improve access and inclusion for people with a disability. Council’s Strategic Planning Coordinator Jeff Bretag said the participation of the Port Stephens community is invaluable. “We are seeking

feedback from people with a disability, their families and their carers about what improvements can be made to ensure people have equal access to buildings, activities, facilities, services and information,” Mr Bretag said. “The survey should take only five minutes to complete, but community input is invaluable to future planning for Port Stephens.” Council is committed to creating an environment that improves the quality of experiences for people living with a disability. Probus Celebrates Centenarian By Jewell DRURY THE Probus Club of Port Stephens is back on deck for 2017. The first meeting of the year was a very special one. Longtime member Fred Burton, former gun snooker player and a past President, is turning 100 years old this month. Fred’s fellow Probus friends helped him celebrate this great milestone with a huge birthday cake. “Fred is still a regular attendee at meetings and was also presented with a “Bradman’s Knock” Certificate (100 not out) by President

q

Ron Gibson,” Publicity Officer Ann Gibson told Bay News Of The Area. Fred was accompanied by his daughter Jenny and they enjoyed the fellowship of members at the extended morning tea and then joined the group for lunch upstairs at Nelson Bay Bowling Club. What a stayer! “Fred proudly showed the congratulatory letters he received for his 100th Birthday from everyone including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth,” Ms Gibson said. The Club is straight back into their activities with Mixed Bowls, Snooker, Walking, Australia Day Family Picnic,

Movie Night and Barbecue, all happening over the next few weeks. There is a wide age demographic in this mixed gender club and local residents are more than welcome to come along to the Probus Club to see what is on offer. Meetings are the second Thursday of the month at Nelson Bay Bowling Club, 9.30am. Enquires should be made to Pam on 4981 0273 or log into their website at www. probusclubofportstephens. org.

including team building, board paddling and other lifesaving skills development. Guest speakers from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, SLSNSW, Australian SLS Champions and past Junior Lifesavers of the Year also shared experiences and knowledge with the participants. A major focus of the camp this year was the planning of some innovative ideas, by these young participants, in mixed club groupings. These were then jointly presented by the youth members to the Hunter CEO Rhonda Scuton, the Director of Member Services Steve Knight and the Director of Education Debbie Booth, who provided feedback on each plan’s feasibility.

Ideas included a communication app, sister club activities, Inclusive Nippers (for kids with disabilities), a youth skills and development program and a club exchange program. The quality of the presentations certainly impressed the panel so much that these ideas will now be presented to the thirteen Hunter club presidents at their next Branch meeting in February. A big thank you also to club stalwart and support operations member Tony Logue, who took the RWC (jetski) across to Birubi and provided the cadet members with first-hand experience on this vital piece of rescue equipment, as well as lots of fun!

New World Champ BLAKE Signal who lives in Nelson Bay and works at Nelson Bay Bowling Club has captured GOLD in the recent Bowls World Championships for New Zealand. Signal played three in the NZ Four that dominated their opposition in both the Semi Final defeating Scotland 20-3 and the Final defeating Australia 23-4. Blake also took out a Bronze medal in the Triples in the World Championships. He then went on to win GOLD in the NZ National Championships Fours with another Nelson Bay Bowling Club Staff member Richard Girvan, also winning SILVER in the Singles of the NZ National Championships. After leading 20-14 he went

www.newsofthearea.com.au

down with a very close 21-20 defeat. He was also won Player of the Tournament. Due to his exceptional form he was selected to play in the Black Jack team in the Bowls Premier League 05 which is an Australian Tournament televised on FOX. Six out of the 10 Black Jack team members all live, work and play Bowls in Australia as the level of Bowls in Australia is much higher and helps in assisting their form. On the encouragement of Nelson Bay Bowling Club’s Bowls Manager, Richard Girvan, Blake moved to Australia early 2016 to improve his Bowls and ultimately make the 2018 NZ Commonwealth Team.
