Government. David Elliott is the Minister for three portfolios; Counter Terrorism, Corrections and Veterans Affairs. Three endeavours were the focus of Mr Elliott’s visit this week. In his capacity as Minister for Corrections, he first visited 27 trainees who will soon be joining the Prison Officer ranks when they complete their training at the Corrective Services NSW Tomago Academy in the Hunter. The Academy opened in 2016 to service the Hunter region and is able to accommodate up to 100 trainees. “These trainees have come from all walks of life, including former tradesmen, hairdressers and Police Officers,” Mr Elliott said. “The role of Correctional Officers can be challenging, and the Tomago Academy gives Hunter locals the opportunity to skill up without leaving their community.” Mr Elliott also visited CIA Precast, a

The charge is relating to grooming a 15-year-old boy at a Port Stephens school between 2015 and 2016, which carries a maximum penalty of 12 years in jail. The school alerted families and acted accordingly as soon as they became aware

of the situation involving the former support staff member. The charges on Ms Hays are the result of the work of Strike Force Minnamorra which was established in June last year to investigate the grooming allegations. Ms Hays will be sentenced in Newcastle Local Court on 29 August.

Bale Out The Drought - INITIATIVE By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE Port Stephens community of Medowie has benefited from the generosity of others when suffered from natural disasters in the past. Now the township is coming together to support the many drought affected farmers in NSW.

The ‘Medowie Bale Out The Drought’ fundraiser has been created by Medowie’s own Ben Niland, Rod Kerr and Chris Doohan. The Bull & Bush has already donated $5000 and are also providing the venue for a big fundraiser on Sunday 12 August. So, how did this all start? Through a casual

Friendships, Wine and Fun By Marian SAMPSON

SOMETIMES it’s the more informal gatherings that mean the most to the members of Fingal Bay Probus Club. One of the firm favourite times for members of Fingal Bay Probus Club are the wine appreciation gatherings. These are held at a members’ home, and are informal, instructive and fun. Julia Redlich of Fingal Bay Probus Club told News Of The Area, “At a recent meeting everyone sampled three different wines during the afternoon, not just a sip, about half a glass

of each, with the option of red or white.” They then gave their verdict to organiser Norman Martin, rating each wine from the lowest 1 to the well-liked 5. There was no hiding the labels on each bottle, so no need to guess the style or vineyard of origin. “Of course wine is not the only enjoyment, there were delicious nibbles provided throughout (not just to help clear the palate) and the home-going finale is the arrival of tea and coffee and homemade cake. This time these were provided by hostess Margaret Marlin,” she said.

To Be The Inspiration THE Salamander Bay Rotary Club’s Annual Changeover Dinner was one of inspiration and celebration. The Club has indeed

lived up to the Rotary theme for 2017/2018 of making a difference. Internationally this Club funds the truly inspirational

and lifesaving ‘Save the Kula Babies’ program in Papua New Guinea which provides safe birthing kits and family planning for women.

This program is inspiring not only because it is saving women’s lives but because it is doing so right on our doorstep.

q Outgoing president Darcy Geale, Mayor Ryan Palmer, Wendy Stein the Save the Kula Babies Project Manager, Incoming President Ina George and Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington at the changeover dinner. Photo by Marian Sampson.

Wendy Stein spoke passionately about the program which allows women to choose when they are ready to extend their families. The positive family planning has reduced the number of babies abandoned and left to die on jungle pathways. Wendy Stein told News Of The Area, “We really need so many things, especially underwear for children.” The Rotary Club also supported Port Stephens Koalas, Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network, The Real Futures Foundation as well as the Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre and other community groups. A change of leadership sees Ina George as incoming President and she is keen to start work on improvements to George Reserve. “I’m excited and passionate about my year ahead as President of Salamander Bay Rotary. With our International theme of ‘Be the Inspiration’.”

“I want to inspire my members, inspire them to find their passion within Rotary, to challenge themselves, be innovative and evolving, within our Club, within our community,” she said. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said, “I’m very grateful to Salamander Rotary Club and its members, for their enormous contribution to our community, I see the club members everywhere I go, working hard to raise funds which then go towards supporting important local and international initiatives.” “They go about their work quietly, making a difference in many ways.” Ms Washington believes that the Club’s newly inducted President, Ina George, will work well to this year’s Rotary theme, ‘Be the Inspiration’. “I look forward to working with Ina and the Club over the next year, to help make our community stronger,” she said.

Yacaaba St, Open to The Public

IT has been a long time coming but the missing link in roads for the Nelson Bay CBD has finally arrived. Not only does the Yacaaba Street extension improve traffic flow for the township but the works provide a wonderful greenspace, linking the township to the waterfront. The delivery has taken around one year from the time the old building was demolished to the finally manicured laws and landscaped gardens being ready for community use. Port Stephens Councils General Manager for Service Development Tim Crosdale opened the formalities, with Mayor Ryan Palmer recognising the number of years that the project has been on the

books. Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “The project is part of the Nelson Bay Next Council project which is about revitalising CBDs throughout Port Stephens.” He believes it will be a great space for markets. “The project is a $1.85 million dollar investment in the town centre, creating a community space for everyone to enjoy,” he said. Mark Craven of Daracon who was contracted to deliver the extension told News Of The Area, “It has been a unique project for us, not just roads and

drains but delivering a green space facility that will last for the community for years.” The team from ‘Nelson Bay Now’ is pleased to see the street opened and the realisation of the vision which has provided an integrated solution with green space, lighting and seating. Council is currently developing the first public domain plan for Nelson Bay, which is reimagining how our beautiful seaside town will look and feel. The Yacaaba Street extension is a positive start to the revitalisation of the town centre.

Nelson Bay residents and visitors are sure to appreciate the change especially during the busy holiday season where the access should improve traffic congestion.

The signs are the result of a consultative process between Council and Port Stephens Koalas. Mayor Ryan Palmer promised road signs at a public rally at Mambo Wanda Wetlands early in his term. Ron Land of Port Stephens Koalas told News Of The Area, “Each of the 20 signs are co-funded by Port Stephens Council and Port

Stephens Koalas.” The ‘On Road’ painted signs sit alongside the mobile trailer with flashing lights funded by Newcastle Airport. Just as we use lower speeds in high pedestrian areas to minimise the risk of vehicle strike, and the injuries sustained, vehicles travelling at lower speeds in areas frequented by koalas are less likely to strike a koala, and the injuries sustained are likely to be less severe. “We have been mindful of limiting the traffic delay during installation.” Awareness is important as the Port Stephens koala population is in crisis.

The planned koala hospital is one step towards the rehabilitation of koalas that are sick or injured, reducing the risk of vehicle strike is another. “The signs are an investment in the safety of the Port’s koala population and cost $600 each. We are desperately seeking financial support and community support,” he said. Our koalas are at risk through loss of habitat, from vehicle strikes and dog attacks, all of these are things that we can prevent. Driving slower in areas populated by koalas is one way, keeping dogs in their yards and on leads is another.

How do I get started as a property buyer? BT, Raymond Terrace

Here are a few pointers to start. As a minimum, a potential purchaser should: • Organise your finance or preapproval. • Work out what your budget is, what type of property you are seeking, and the criteria the property has to have. What are the deal breakers for you? • Ask to be added to the Real Estate Agency database, along with the criteria of what type of property you are seeking. Even if you’re not 100% sure, at least give a rough guideline. • Subscribe to the Facebook and Social Media pages of your Real Estate Agencies to look out for upcoming properties. • Build a customer relationship with your preferred agent. They will remember you and you will become front of mind if they speak with you or email you on a regular basis. • When completing an inspection, especially if viewing a number of properties, take your camera, ask permission to take some relevant snaps so that you can remember which property had which features you liked or disliked. • Realise that sometimes you have to compromise. Not very often a property matches your criteria and visualisations by 100%. Hope that helps. Denise

Dear Jasminda,

Councillors unanimously in favour for Preschool Port Stephens Council votes in favour of Medowie Community Preschool

By Rachael VAUGHAN

STAFF, children and the committee at Medowie Community Preschool have finally seen the end of a long-running saga to obtain an adequate outcome to nearly five years of contract negotiations with Port Stephens Council. In 2011, Port Stephens Council introduced the Community Leasing Policy, followed by a Review of Children’s Services in 2012. These changes meant that Port Stephens Council needed the Preschool to sign a new lease that would potentially lead to it being financially unable to continue to provide the current service level. The Preschool unsuccessfully tried to resolve the issue for a number of years, before finally having success in 2017, with the assistance and support of Cr Chris Doohan. Councillor Chris Doohan spent time listening to committee concerns, facilitating meetings with Council staff and the committee, before putting forth a Notice Of Motion before Council last July, to ensure the Community Preschool could continue. This Notice Of Motion was passed unanimously, and almost twelve months to the

day, the decision has been finalised, and the Preschool’s future is safe. Last week, Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the new boundary realigning, which will allow the preschool to move to a 30-year lease, with a much more reasonable rent that reflects its low fees to families and its independance from Council. 2017 President Jacqui Hrast, told News Of The Area, “It’s fantastic to see this issue resolved.” “I’d like to particularly thank Chris for continuing to fight for this important community asset.” “A lot of work happens in the background and we are very thankful for his ongoing commitment,” she said. Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Chris Doohan, told News Of The Area, “It is heartwarming to be able to play a part in ensuring this community asset is safe, and will continue to be able to offer it’s unique services for many years to come.” “I am proud to have been an integral part of ensuring this wonderful preschool is safe, and its legacy will continue.”

I’m really happy that the Thailand soccer team boys and their coach were able to be rescued, but I don’t think they should have been sedated during the process. What do you think? Ms HQ, Medowie

Okay, let me get this straight. There were 12 Wild Boars and a coach trapped in horrendous conditions for weeks, most of them couldn’t swim and even professional cave divers indicated how dire the conditions were in that cave, but Ms HQ from Medowie thinks that sedation was taking things a step too far. Sedation is viable in a number of situations, Ms HQ. Some of us would be much nicer if we were sedated on a permanent basis. When I had my first child I was all about lavender oil and water births and doulas wearing tie-dyed shirts with a bit of whale music in the background thrown in for good measure, but that was until the contractions started. Fast forward 20 minutes and I was happy to take any prescription or non-prescription drug known to humankind. Sedation? Bring it on. If I am going on a long haul flight, I sedate myself with vodka shots, otherwise I start the self talk of being stuck in an enclosed space with complete strangers, hovering at over 30,000 feet with a vast expanse of ocean below and nothing to save us all from impending doom but that lifejacket somewhere under the seat that has a whistle not dissimilar to the ones found in Christmas Bon Bons. Oh, by the way, did you know those overhead oxygen masks only last for about 15 minutes? I’m hyperventilating just thinking about it. Sedating the boys would have made it far less traumatic and indeed much safer for the rescue team who were already battling water currents, tight spaces and vulture-like Hollywood directors without the need to throw in a few panic attacks. That’s what I think, Ms HQ. Thanks for asking. Carpe diem, Jasminda Call 02 4997 9333 |

Community Views on Special Rate Variation

Mayor Ryan Palmer says Council has been listening closely to what the community wants and is now exploring a number of funding options to deliver vital infrastructure for all to enjoy

PORT Stephens Council will begin an exhaustive community consultation process in July, seeking the views of residents regarding a Special Rate Variation (SRV). The SRV would seek to raise significant funds to be used to invest heavily in local communities, delivering rejuvenated town centres, major new infrastructure, increased services and new facilities. Mayor Ryan Palmer says Council has been listening closely to what the community wants and is now exploring a number of funding options to deliver vital infrastructure for all to enjoy: “The Port Stephens area has continued to grow, as have community’s expectations and demands.”

“Port Stephens is a place people want to live, work and play, but with that comes an increased need for Council to deliver enhanced services, infrastructure and facilities to our community.” “Council is continuing to explore funding options by applying for grant funding from all tiers of government, lobbying the NSW Government and Opposition for more funding and consulting the community on an application for a potential special rate variation.” “Tonight we agreed to take the first step in the process of seeking feedback on a potential application for what a special rate variation might look like.” “We have nearly 20 community engagement activities planned over the coming months including community meetings, information sessions and

formal feedback activities. We’re going out to the community to listen; and I strongly encourage all of the community to take part in these activities.” “This is an exciting time, we have a unique opportunity to deliver for Port Stephens on a scale that’s not been seen before – the projects we are proposing will deliver local jobs, stimulate our local economy, encourage business growth and enhance our town centres which benefit all within our community,” Mayor Palmer said. Port Stephens residents will receive direct communications in July regarding the application for a special rate variation, with community engagement activities commencing in late July.

Council Pauses Reclassifying Land By Marian SAMPSON THE future of the block of land at 109 Foreshore Drive after this week’s Port Stephens Council meeting which saw the lot no longer for sale but not having been reclassified as community land is uncertain. Nigel Dique of Econetwork Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “Unless 109 Foreshore Drive is reclassified from operational to community use there will always be a concern that it could be sold off at some time in the future. “Council needs to rid the community of this uncertainty and there are good reasons for doing so.” He believes that council has an obligation to pass on to future generations an environment equivalent to or better than that enjoyed by the current generation. “It should also be understood the land is part of a well-used corridor for the koala population of the Mambo Wanda wetlands and this population is

already under pressure from urban growth.” Mr Dique stressed the importance of green areas which bring character and charm to neighbourhoods, and in the wider context of ecosystem services are essential for our mental and physical health. “Given that the local community has always regarded this block, together with the one adjoining, as a public reserve, it needs to be reclassified for community use,” he said. Councillor Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, ‘There was a lot of community angst about the sale of this site. “I commend the Mayor for listening to

the community and withdrawing his notice of motion to sell the block of land.”

The matter will be held over for up to twelve months while Council seeks other avenues to fund the Tomaree Sports Complex which the sale of the land was earmarked to fund.

Port Foursome in Pinocchio William Ford wrote 12 pantomimes to be performed at the theatre, including the stage adaptation of the ‘Adventures of Pinocchio’ by Carlo Collodi titled Pinocchio.

By Rachael VAUGHAN

THE Young People’s Theatre (YPT) in Newcastle currently has a production running with a decent amount of Port Stephens representation in the cast, and we think you may just recognise a face or two in this talented group. YTP’s current production is Pinocchio,

which is running from now until 18 August. Three young actors from across Port Stephens scored a role, and one certain Port Stephens Council employee scored the role of Gepetto, the only adult role in the production. Tahlia Goodwin from Salamander Bay is playing Adrastus the Coachman, Aleisha Townsend from Salt

Ash and Skyla Conlon from Medowie are both playing Bonzano Children. Steve Bernasconi, a member of Port Stephens council staff, appears as Gepetto, also sharing the stage with his own son Jack, who is one of the three talented boys sharing the main role as Pinocchio. YPT is a community organisation that has been

running since 1948. YPT was founded by William and Betty Ford and still fostered their aim of ‘theatre for young people by young people.’ William Ford wrote 12 pantomimes to be performed at the theatre, including the stage adaptation of the ‘Adventures of Pinocchio’ by Carlo Collodi titled Pinocchio. Medowie young person Skyla Conlon, who is performing in this stage adaption of Pinocchio, told

News Of The Area, “I love YPT so much, and have been doing Drama classes there for 5 years now.” “I have made the most amazing friends and always have heaps of fun doing the shows.” “At YPT, I have learnt so much and I am excited for hopefully a life of drama and performing to come,” she said. NAIDOC across Port Stephens

By Rachael VAUGHAN

BECAUSE of her, we can. The theme for NAIDOC week 2018 was a strong message of courage, strength and empowerment. Port Stephens celebrated this special week with a jampacked week full of culture, family and fun. The week began with a moving march, flag raising and smoking ceremony in Raymond Terrace, in the forecourt of Port Stephens Council. Uncle John Ridgeway performed for the crowd again this year, a special tradition that many look forward to. another special event took place at the opening, with a ‘Road to Tomorrow’ agreement being signed The Road to Tomorrow Agreement, or Yabang-GuButunga Agreement in the Worimi language of Gatung, is a first for the region, and sets out the shared objectives and projects that have been identified as priorities for Port Stephens. The Agreement was

signed by Council’s Mayor Ryan Palmer and General Manager Wayne Wallis, Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council’s CEO Andrew Smith and Chair Leigh Ridgeway, and Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council’s CEO Len Roberts and Chair Fiona Manton. Many moved from the Raymond Terrace ceremony to the Awabakal fun day in Newcastle on the foreshore, where there were stalls, rides and music performers galore, including popular group ‘Justice Crew’. Wednesday morning saw another important march and ceremony at Nelson Bay. Uncle John Ridgeway performed for the crowd, and children enjoyed rides and activities while parents and community members relaxed with a coffee on large outdoor mats in the shade. The NAIDOC touch championships took place in Medowie on thursday, with the RAAF team taking out both trophies. Friday saw the culmination of a wonderful week of culture, with the

Worimi family fun day at King Park Raymond Terrace. The overwhelming success of the event and support in such great numbers saw the event moved for the first time this year from the Murrook Culture in Williamtown. Community enjoyed rides, food, live music and activities for the children, as well as a large number of local service providers with information and giveaways. Proud Wiradjuri woman Michelle Bovill told News Of The Area, “NAIDOC week is a time to celebrate our culture and community.” “This year with the theme ‘Because of her we can’, we have gone beyond our normal celebrations and reflected on our elders past and present, without who we wouldn’t be here, reflecting back to our traditional roots that honoured women and their integral role in our survival.” “I have reflected; Because of her I am, because of her I can, because of her I will,” she said.

NAIDOC Touch Championships

By Rachael VAUGHAN

Stephens Kate Washington MP opened the day, along with a moving smoking ceremony by Worimi community members, and then, it was on for young and old. With matches played over twenty minute duration, minus a halftime break, it was clear that the fitness levels of all concerned were going to be tested throughout the day. In the mixed competition, the Port Stephens Council team looking to be the front runners with the RAAF close behind. However, when the pressure was on during the

THE fourth annual NAIDOC touch championship was held last week at Medowie’s Boyd Oval, as part of Port Stephens NAIDOC celebrations. Five teams participated during the day in both a Men’s and Mixed competition including Port Stephens/ Hunter District Police, Port Stephens Council, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), representatives of the Department Of Education, and of course, the Aboriginal Community of the Port Stephens area. State member for Port

final, the men and women of our Air Force did enough to hold off the Council to win the Mixed Competition Plate. In the Men’s competition, there was only ever going to be one winner with the RAAF steamrolling all comers, overcoming a brave contingent from the Department of Education in the final, easily taking out the Men’s Competition Cup 7 to 3, making it a double RAAF win. Kate Washington MP also had the pleasure of presenting the Cup and Plate trophies to their respective winners.

THERE were tears of joy and relief, and plenty of celebration, when the final siren rang on Saturday, as the Port Stephens Power women’s team won their first ever game, defeating Wallsend West Newcastle by 16 points. It was the Senior teams first ever victory played under competitive conditions, who applauded Wallsend for the courage they showed, playing with limited numbers and still providing a fierce contest. It wasn’t until the last quarter that Port Power were able to break away and have control of the game, primarily due to the efforts of Hunter Rep Player Tia Davidson, who was best on ground with 21 disposals, 3 tackles and 3

In the end, the day was enjoyed by all, with some enjoying their own sense of success. “It was a great experience and to make things even better our Police team ended up even winning a game for the first time, so we’re thrilled and just want to make sure everyone remembers we won a game!” Chief Inspector Tony Townsend told News Of The Area. Another win in terms of community involvement was to see our esteemed mayor Ryan Palmer taking to the field as part of the council team, something many spectators took great notice of.

goals. Great games also from Meg MacAuslan 26 disposals, Chey Neu and Amana Lewis both with 17 disposals each. The Port Power women began training in October last year, bringing together a mix of middle aged mums, young high school students and many defence personnel, especially from the nearby Williamtown RAAF base. The women have worked so hard on and off the field, learning the fundamentals and skills of this game. As the injuries kept mounting, 13 losses in a row, and with the realisation that they may not win a game, moral has been hard to maintain. But to the girls credit, and to the ones that have stuck it

out through the hard times, they now have a boost in self confidence for the journey ahead. They now know that there will be many more wins to come, maybe not again this season, but definitely in the exciting years ahead. The community is encouraged to put Saturday 21 July in your diaries, for a taste of representative football at Ferodale Oval, Medowie. Port Stephens Power welcome you to come down and watch the best players in the GE Women’s competition play. With sides from the Hunter, Central Coast and Newcastle playing each other in a round robin format, games start from 11am.
