Fabulous Fakes on Show By Marian SAMPSON
WHEN it comes to fine art the question is often asked: “Is it genuine?” From 18 to 28 November, the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre will be proudly exhibiting their Fabulous Fakes. The artworks are copies or in the style of works that emulate works by the likes of Monet, Botticelli, da Vinci and more. Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “Our artists have thoroughly

for members of the public who are unable to attend the meetings held at the Raymond Terrace chambers. In a sign that new mayor Ryan Palmer is intent on moving Port Stephens into a new era of transparency, he and Cr John Nell moved that council general manager
Wayne Wallis “initiate the necessary processes to reinstate and reinstall the webcam system”. Cr Palmer told all in attendance at last week’s meeting, “For me it is more about the people of Port Stephens being able to freely be involved in the process.”
“I think it’s a great thing for the community but as with anything it will be open to review.” This review could be sooner rather than later with some councillors voicing their disapproval immediately during the meeting, “I don’t want to take the
risk and burden my family by getting sued,” Cr Ken Jordan said. “There’s going to be groups out there endlessly going over every word we say.” However, Cr Giacomo Arnott was one councillor who did not harbour such

Every single person I have spoken to would prefer the ridiculous amount of money this webcasting costs to be used on road repairs instead,” he said. Despite the concerns raised, the motion was passed, which means webcasting will soon be made available. Whether it continues to be available remains to be seen.
opportunity to check out the displays by Marine Rescue, DPI, Services NSW, Bay Boat Sales, and TackleWorld who provided information on fishing and using the waterways safely. Duffs Bait and Tackle provided the bait for the
kids’ fishing clinics which ran throughout the day with some good catches, including bream, whiting, tarwhine and long toms, achieved off Nelson Bay Beach at the Eastern Groyne. Chef Ben Way of Little Beach Boathouse was on hand to showcase how to cook the fish that we find locally and presented cooked and raw options including a delicious Japanese style sashimi ponzu style with a soy and citrus dressing. Ben shared hints and tips on how to prepare and serve the fish that we catch locally. Potentially the biggest hit with the kids on the day was the touch pool. Bay local Jo Drake told News Of The Area, “My kids found it amazing.” Her daughter Charlotte Drake said, “It’s not even scary to hold a Banjo Shark.” The touch pool also taught her things like Port Jackson Sharks have two spikes on them and that the Banjo Shark feels a bit rough. The event was a part of a statewide initiative which was aimed at promoting information on bag limits and fish sizes as well as providing information on the Marine Park and its regulations.

Crown commits to the Gut By Margie TIERNEY
AFTER years of lobbying, it now appears almost certain the area of the Myall River known as ‘The Gut’ in Tea Gardens will be dredged by the middle of next year. The commitment came from the Director of Infrastructure for Crown Lands, Glenn Bunny, during a special presentation hosted by the Hawks Nest/ Tea Gardens Progress Association last week “I’m 90 percent confident that we will have ‘The Gut’ dredged by the end of the financial year,” Mr Bunny told the meeting. “We will also be looking at the Shortcut.” “I’m just waiting on some outstanding sediment sampling which determines how we can dredge, the machinery and methodology.” Mr Bunny told News Of The Area, “The sampling should be completed within the next few weeks.”
Charges after leaving toddlers home alone
“I’ve got budget for the dredge set aside for this financial year.” In a surprisingly frank discussion, Mr Bunny also outlined the Government’s plans for a new way of managing the State’s massive infrastructure and assets. “We’re developing a Coastal Infrastructure Unit which is an integrated group with ourselves (Crown Lands) Roads and Maritime Services and Transport NSW, which will provide one delivery agency for all coastal infrastructure for the entire State. “At the moment we all do bits, so for an area like this (Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest/ Port Stephens) it will be delivered and planned by one single agency,” Mr Bunny said. A cabinet paper will go up for rubber stamping in March next year but Mr Bunny is extremely confident the change will go ahead. Tea Gardens, as a port, has also been targeted for
economic development. Other issues raised included the restricted access to Jimmys Beach from the caravan park due to a drainage problem. The need for Fire Hazard Reduction along Crown Lands from Bennetts Beach to Jimmys Beach, Winda Woppa’s erosion problems,
Aboriginal Land claims and the need for meaningful engagement between all groups affected. The Myall River Action Group’s Gordon Grainger said, “We found Glenn to be a welcoming voice to what has been a traditionally complex State Government Ministry.” “His position manages a

Ronald McDonald Houses are located all across Australia at both women’s and children’s

These houses enable families to stay close to their loved ones in comfortable and supportive surroundings at a very stressful time. The charity also has other arms to it. They launched a mobile unit that they provide in
conjunction with Royal Far West, which has two consulting rooms and provides a range of health services to children and their families living in remote outback Australia. The charity has also made a five year $2.25million commitment to Cord Blood Banks, helping children who require a bone marrow transplants. RMHC also offers family retreats and a range of educational services. The local Salamander staff kept kids busy with a craft corner, Lolly Bar, Lucky Dip, Face Painting and various activities with prizes.

POLICE have laid charges following investigations after two children were left at home alone at a Nelson Bay home last weekend. Police were called to Government Road, Nelson Bay, about 1.45am on Sunday 15 October 2017, after passersby located a young girl walking along the road by herself. The child indicated where her home was and officers searched the unit, locating another child asleep in a cot. Officers contacted the children’s parents who returned to the unit and were spoken to by investigators. It is alleged that during a search of the woman’s handbag, officers located cannabis and white powder believed to be methylamphetamine. The female children, aged 4 and 2 were removed from their parents’ custody and a FACs notification was made. Officers have now charged the parents with abandon/expose child under 7 cause danger serious injury, and possess prohibited drug. They are expected to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 27 November 2017.

Mrs GH, Boat Harbour
Dear Mrs GH, When I read your conundrum, I actually thought you were writing about ‘adults only’ colouring-in books, which I must confess I had not heard of before. I then thought that this was a great concept and decided to quit my multiple day (and night) jobs and focus on the patent. However, during the research and development stage, I quickly realised that not only are there already ‘adults only’ colouring-in books, there’s also a series called ‘Colour me Drunk: A Drinking and Drawing Activity Book’; Colouring for Grown-Ups (with an odd graphic of a half-coloured-in man and a woman holding her blanket to her chest); ‘The Killer Weed Colouring Book: for Marijuana Lovers’; ‘Profanity: an honest colouring book for people who are mad as hell’ and one called ‘Frig Off, I’m Colouring’ (or words to that effect), for the passiveaggressive colourer. You would assume that I am just making this stuff up, Mrs GH, but I can assure you I am not. It seems that the market is pretty well saturated. That is a real shame, because I have only had about three marketable ideas in my entire lifetime. Number one was an advertisement for conserves where little jam caricatures danced around to that ‘80s hit ‘Pump up the Jam’, but instead it was ‘Plump up the Jam’, get it? The jam was full of plump fruit. The other brilliant idea was a deterrent for heroin addicts called . . . oh, forget it. I give up. Back to the drawing board, Mrs GH. Regarding your colouring-in books, I really don’t understand all that mindfulness stuff. I’m too highly strung, my dear.
Carpe diem, Jasminda
COUNCILLORS of Port Stephens Council were this week given the chance to support the council taking a stand to show their support for the drive to bring marriage equality to Australia. Councillor Giacomo Arnott, Port Stephens Council’s youngest ever councillor to serve, passionately delivered points to councillors, council staff, and the public gallery to support the Notice of Motion he personally put before Port Stephens Council. “This notice of motion is a really important one for all of us, not just the LGBTIQ community,” he said. “We lead our community as the elected representatives, and we need to show that we believe in good strong values, and support everyone within our community equally.” “Port Stephens is about fairness, inclusivity and equality, and we need to reflect that as their representatives.” “This is not a political statement, it’s about support for every person living in Port Stephens,” he said. The councillors were all outspoken in their support for fair and equal treatment for all people in
Port Stephens, but when an amendment to the Notice of Motion was put up, a close vote saw the councillors vote five to four for the amendment to stand. The successful amendment to the notice of motion will instead simply encourage everyone in Port Stephens to participate in the same sex marriage postal survey. Despite the watered down positive vote, members of the public in attendance at the council meeting were impressed with the opinions shared by other councillors. Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan was passionate in throwing his support behind the un-passed motion, stating: “This is quite simply just about fairness, because it’s the right damn thing to do!” “We don’t stop people of differing religions or colour getting married, so why sexual preference?” “We’re not painting the town rainbow, it’s just about doing the right thing and supporting everyone as equals,” he said. Mayor Ryan Palmer spoke of one of the proudest moments of his life, standing by his sister at her wedding to her wife in England in his support of this notice of motion passed before council. He also thanked Chris Baguley, who he described as a good family man, for coming along and speaking in support of the motion during public access.

Chris Battle has been a strong and public supporter of the ‘Yes’ campaign, making headlines recently by opening up his home to his neighbours for a barbecue, extending the offer to come and meet his family and expand their knowledge of what this vote means to same sex families. Councillor Ken Jordan summed up the open discussion amongst the councillors before the notice of motion was passed. He told all in attendance, “Pope Francis, whilst leading World Youth Day festivities recently, was asked for his thoughts on same sex marriage, and his answer was ‘who am I to judge?’ to those in attendance.” “If the leader of the Catholic Church says it is not for me to judge, then it isn’t for any of us to judge.” Councillor Arnott told News Of The Area, “I want all people in our community to know that despite this result, Port Stephens is a welcoming, inclusive area for all.”

Lifeguard Facility Makes Swimming Safer By Marian SAMPSON
ONE Mile Beach is home to a new state-of-the-art Life Guard Facility which has opened just in time for the busy beach season in Port Stephens. The $840,000 Port Stephens Council facility was primarily funded by a Crown Reserve Trust grant.
Brock Lamont, Port Stephens Council’s Community and Recreation Coordinator, said, “This is a massive upgrade from the previous building, designed in consultation with the local lifeguards to ensure that it meets their needs and there’s no doubt it will have a huge impact on their important work of keeping our beaches
safe.” The building has a first aid room, an elevated shark observation tower and room to store equipment. Phil Rock, the lifeguard supervisor for Australian Lifeguard Services, who contract services to Port Stephens Council, told News Of The Area “The lifeguards patrol Fingal Beach and Birubi Beach Monday to Friday and One Mile Beach seven days a week, from 9am to 5pm and

Always swim between the red and yellow flags, never swim alone, and if you do get in trouble, don’t panic; raise your hand for help. “The lifeguard service averages 20 to 30 rescues each year but the goal of having lifeguards on the beaches is really about preventing the need for swimmers to be rescued,” he said.

Tastes At The Bay By Rachael VAUGHAN
IT’S that time of year again, when the Tastes at the Bay festival hits town. The CBD and foreshore will be bustling on 3-5 November, when the festival will take over our taste buds with delectable food and drink, live music to get our toes tapping and events to interest any member of the family. The Tastes at the Bay festival came from humble beginnings around 2003-4 when Rob Murphy hosted
an evening at his restaurant ‘Rob’s on the Boardwalk’. The event was a resounding success, and Rob passed the running of the event for future years to the Chamber of Commerce to grow it to what it has become today. This year’s festival is set to be the biggest and best yet, with a wide variety of old faithful attractions, and new additions to be enjoyed by all. Peter Clough from the Tomaree Business Chamber told News Of The Area, “In Nelson Bay, we are truly in

the centre of one of the finest food, wine/beer and leisure destinations you will ever find.” “While we are now relatively well known out here for these wonderful things, we want to ensure this year’s festival takes the message even further afield.” “We are so proud of what we have here in Nelson Bay, and we want to share it with the world,” he said. This year you can get involved in a variety of activities, from cheese making and chocolate

PORT Stephens suicide prevention advocate Dave Sams has been nominated for yet another award, Lifeline’s Brass Blokes. The Brass Blokes Award recognises the amazing spirit of ‘blokes’ within our region. Lifeline put a call out for communities to recognise and nominate those who have been through adversity
yet still find the time, courage and inspiration to give back to their community. Dave Sams was nominated for his work with Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network and in other groups within the community. When News Of The Area caught up with Dave Sams he was volunteering with a local Landcare Group. He was too busy to stop work but told News Of The Area, “I’m excited to have

Stephens Community Drug Action Team (CDAT) to the Bay. Dave’s wife, Sue Sams said, “It would be lovely if he won, he’s quite humble about what he has done.” She believes that Dave’s work makes a big impact in the Port Stephens Community. “Dave is in the final three to take out the award and it would be fantastic recognition for Dave if he were to win,” she said. The Brass Blokes Award will be announced on Friday 20 October.

TWO Port Stephens Council-owned holiday parks, Thou Walla Sunset Retreat and Fingal Bay Holiday Park, have been announced as finalists in the 2017 NSW Tourism Awards. The awards recognise tourism businesses that demonstrate outstanding achievement throughout the year. Thou Walla Sunset Retreat in Soldiers Point is nominated in the 'Unique Accommodation' category for its sunset camping tents, which take 'glamping' to a new level with king size bed, full ensuite and flat screen TV. It's one of three finalists in the category, which also includes Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Fingal Bay Holiday Park is one of six finalists nominated in the 'Caravan and Holiday Parks' category, reflecting the excellent accommodation and tourism experience it has to offer. Kim Latham, Port Stephens Council's Holiday Parks Operations Manager, says she's incredibly proud of both of the holiday parks. "For not one, but two, of our Council-owned holiday parks to be finalists in this year's NSW Tourism Awards is a resounding endorsement of the quality of our accommodation and the unique experience we offer here in Port Stephens," Ms Latham said. "While both Thou Walla Sunset Retreat and Fingal Bay Holiday Park are up against strong competition, just being recognised as a finalist in these prestigious awards is an amazing achievement," she added. Ms Latham said it was encouraging to see several Port Stephens businesses also being recognised as finalists. "It's wonderful to see local tourist attractions like Oakvale Farm and Fauna World and Sand Dune Adventures nominated as finalists for these awards, as these businesses play a huge role in attracting visitors to the Port Stephens region," she added. The 2017 NSW Tourism Awards winners will be announced Thursday 16 November at the International Convention Centre in Sydney.

THERE is a dramatic flair in the air with four local students performing in the Young People’s Theatre’s current production of Cinderella. Cinderella is certainly no meek pushover in this revised Rodgers and Hammerstein musical which deviates from D i s n e y ’ s traditional version and includes the much-loved classic songs. Mambo Warning
Dear News Of The Area,
The Mambo Wetlands issue is just another example of where low density housing (in this case a dual occupancy) is allowed to encroach into native wildlife habitat. Port Stephens Council has the responsibility to ensure that this development does not go ahead. The current owner was well aware that the land purchased was environmentally sensitive. This should be reserved for the protection of the Koalas’ habitat. The Council should take responsibility to purchase the property and ensure that the owner is compensated for all costs involved. In turn, the NSW State Government should reimburse Port Stephens Council for their expenses in correcting the State Government’s “mistake”. More importantly, this should be a wake-up call for residents that we need to overhaul our zoning laws to protect what’s left of our natural environment. Areas of natural bush should be protected from any development. Rural holdings should be designated as areas for restoration or reserved for future housing, if already well developed. Existing developed urban areas should allow for higher density development. Let’s act while we have a natural environment worth protecting. Paul Attard, Nelson Bay

Agency get their Pink on
By Marian SAMPSON
PINK your town is on again. As a way to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, the McGrath Foundation is calling on local communities to ‘Pink Up Your Town’ to help fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses throughout the country and to increase breast awareness in young people. The team from PRD at Shoal Bay has heard the call and staff are getting in the pink. PRD Agency principal Brian Gair told News Of The Area, “We are working with lots of businesses in the Bay, we are decorating our offices and we have secured donations for events that will raise funds for the McGrath Foundation throughout the Pink Your Town event.”
Fundraising activities include a sausage sizzle which is being held at the PRD offices on 20 October, which has been supported by local businesses Salamander Bay Village Butchers, Anna Bay Butchers and Sea Breeze Bakery. PRD Shoal Bay held a golf day last year as a part of the program and raised $16,000 for the McGrath Foundation. “We have been encouraging other businesses to join with us to help raise awareness in the community,” he said. The sausage sizzle will start at noon on Friday 20 October and continue until sold out, however the team will be raising funds for this cause for the entire month. You can get behind the campaign by visiting the PRD Shoal Bay Go Fund Me Page to make a donation.

Surfarama at One Mile
By Marian SAMPSON
KAOS Surf presented Surfarama at One Mile Beach over the weekend. The event offers young amateur surfers a chance to win large amounts of prize money in each division, with over 100 surfers taking part in the event, which showcased some of Australia’s best young
surfers who battled it out for the $5000 in prize money as they surfed towards their dreams of a surfing career. One Mile Beach pumped with a festival vibe with DJs performing live art and there were plenty of fun beach activities. The Kaos Surf Surfarama is the fourth in a series of six events in the series which
consists of a point score that will be kept at each event. This puts surfers in the running to win another lot of prize money if they have the highest point score at the end of the series. Tony Bainbridge of Kaos Surf is the local sponsor for this leg of the Surfarama series. He told News Of The Area, “We bought this

Ultimate Frisbee By Marian SAMPSON WE have all thrown a frisbee and had plenty of fun with family and friends, however, this pastime has now grown into the competitive sport of Ultimate. Ultimate is regarded as the fastest growing team sport in the world. The game is full of quick passes, AFL-style marks and spectacular diving catches. The frisbee moves from one end of the field to the other using netball-style passes and a catch in the end zone scores points for the teams. NSW Ultimate is hosting the 2017 Mixed Championship at Nelson Bay 20-22 October.
Hannah Monty, Development Officer of NSW Ultimate told News Of The Area, “There are around 460 players coming to the tournament at Nelson Bay in October.” She believes that the fast growth of the sport is due to the friendly spirit of the game, and how much fun it is to play and watch. The game is popular at university level and the peak body for the sport is working on juniors, youth and school programs. “Spectators will see frisbees thrown in ways that they have never seen before during the tournament, with exciting grabs and overhead passes,” she said. event to the local area to give the junior divisions a representative aspect of contest surfing, giving them the experience of pitting themselves against like minded young surfers from outside the region.” He believes that this allows them to build up their experience going into the future. “We became involved so we could take the opportunity to create local for locals
which is really important to us at Kaos surf,” he said. Local Bay Board Rider, Jasmine Sampson took out the Under 16 girls’ title, with Mike Clayton-Brown coming second in the under 14 boys’ event. The $1000 prize in the open men’s was taken out by Jamie Skillin. Surfarama plans to come back to the Bay in 2018.

Surf’s Up PORT Stephens has secured one of the biggest women’s surfing events in Australia, the World Qualifying Series finale, which is expected to boost the local economy by $910,000 over two years. The Port Stephens Toyota NSW Pro will be held at Birubi Beach from 2-5 November and will be the last opportunity for competitors to make the cut for the 2018 elite Championship Tour. Mayor of Port Stephens Ryan Palmer says he’s beyond excited for Port Stephens Council to host the final event of the season and to welcome surfers and visitors from around the world. “We all know that Port Stephens has world-class beaches, but this is an amazing opportunity to showcase our natural assets to a global audience,” Mayor Palmer said. “It’s also a rare opportunity for our local surfers to compete in home waters and test their ability against the best in the world. “Hosting a major surfing competition like the women’s World Qualifying Series is a great endorsement of Port Stephens from the World Surfing League and Surfing NSW, and we look forward to working together to make this competition a success,” he added. Port Stephens Council’s Tourism and Events Coordinator Janelle Gardner says the competition will be great for local businesses, hotels, restaurants and tourism operators. “This event is going to be huge! We’re expecting more than 1,000 surfers and visitors to converge on Port Stephens, injecting $910,000 into the local economy over the next two years,” Ms Gardner said. “We’re extremely excited to promote Port Stephens, our beautiful beaches, National Parks and the amazing Worimi Conservation Lands to surfers and surfing fans from around the world,” she added. The 2017 Port Stephens Toyota Pro will run from 2 to 5 November and will include the women’s QS6000, a men’s QS1000 event and a junior competition.

This is Lil’s Legacy By Marian SAMPSON LIL Preston was born in New Zealand and arrived in Australia in the 1980s. It was at this time that her passion became voluntary work. Lil had a dream to open an Op Shop and met Frank Carr who was coordinating the opening of the first Vinnies in Anna Bay. This was Lil’s opportunity to be involved in her dream role and she went on to help run Vinnies at Anna Bay successfully for many years. Fellow Vinnies Anna Bay volunteer Anya Stewart told
News Of The Area, “I first met Lil after retiring to the quaint little village in 2006, when I popped into Vinnies to lend a hand.” She believes that Lil had a passion, a special interest in the concerns of people who needed her most. It was this passion that helped those people who are less fortunate in the community. As it is today, every donation that came into Vinnies was a treasure to Lil, and everything had a purpose. Lil couldn’t waste a thing. She was a wonderful

After-all The Battle was about to begin. The Battle of the Sexes was played-out last Sunday over 18 holes. The inaugural event was held in 2012, which the ladies won. Since then the men have won every event. With 26 ladies and 22 men in this year’s field, reputations, but more importantly, pride was at stake. Hong Kong Gymnastics Connection By Marian SAMPSON
q Amelie Gibson from the Hong Kong Gymnastic Team at a training session with the Bay’s Amya Buyst.
ELEVEN-year-old Hong Kong Level 6 gymnast, Amelie Gibson spent her holidays in Nelson Bay and trained with local nine-year-old Amya Buyst of Shoal Bay who is currently a Level 4 gymnast.
