36 years of Dance at Bay Custom-built dance facility will be built in 2017 By Jewell DRURY
THIS coming weekend will be the 36th Annual Dance Concert for Robyn Yvette’s Dance and Talent Centre. The current dance studio is located in the heart of Salamander Bay and has been providing excellence in dance tuition in a fun and happy learning environment for 36 years. The dance centre is well known for winning an extensive amount of awards at statewide eisteddfods, its overseas tours and its spectacular annual revues. Students are able to study Classical Ballet, Tap, Jazz,
Modern/Contemporary, Musical Theatre and variety groups. Tuition is available for students from the age of three to 23 years of age. Starting with only 20 students, the dance and talent centre now sees 200 students taught by five highly experienced teachers. “When I started the school 36 years ago, never in my wildest dreams did I think that it would end up where it is today,” Robyn Yvette told Bay News Of The Area. “From the very first CONTINUED Page 3

OPINION Residents Deserve Better
q Duncan Scott-Lawson with a chainsawed tree.
Dear News Of The Area, I QUESTION the Baird State Government’s use of the [Tomaree and Stockton] facilities once they turf out the disabled residents. My gut feeling is telling me that they have property developer mates waiting in the background ready to snap up these two centres once all the disabled residents have been relocated into community group homes. Growing up in Nelson Bay with my two sisters, I would not like to see property developers taking over these two prime real estate locations and I believe that the residents who are being cared for in these centres should be able to live out their lives in these centres which have become their home, and the only home that they have known over the past years.

A lot of the archaeologically significant material has been built over but there are still some identifiable sites. It is therefore culturally sacred and has been identified as an Aboriginal Place. It is still used to teach the younger generations about their ancestors and the culture of their people. In view of this, the vandalism is extremely disrespectful to the traditional owners as well as spoiling the area for everyone.

Response to Tomaree Centre letter OPINION
Dear News Of The Area, I want to address the comments made by Stuart Tomlinson (Bay News Of The Area 24/11/2016) in regards to the residents of the Tomaree and Stockton Centres. These large residential centres were built before the Second World War and are ageing. We now have
much better ways of supporting people with disabilities. The NSW Government is offering residents of the Tomaree and the Stockton Centres new homes that are purpose built to suit their support needs at locations chosen by residents and their families. They will live in these new homes with fewer people, enjoy more privacy, be supported by more staff and have more say in how they live.
Hundreds of people in Sydney and Orange have already moved into the community out of large residential centres like the Tomaree and Stockton Centre. The response from them and their families has been overwhelmingly positive. Some have experienced dramatic improvements in their health and many are participating in new activities they could only dream about previously. They are also seeing their
families more and making new friends. The Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) is committed to delivering this project because our residents have a right to live in the community to enjoy the same amenity and choices that all of us take for granted. Letter to Santa By Daniel SAHYOUN WITH just over three weeks until Christmas, Santa Claus has started making his list and checking it twice. Boys and girls can write to Santa and drop their letters off at any Australia Post Office in the Port Stephen Region for express delivery to Santa. Although Santa and the Elves are busy getting the sleigh and reindeers ready for Christmas, the bearded man in red has promised to send a reply to every child who writes to him. One of Santa’s helpers told News Of The Area
they are always kept busy in the leadup to Christmas collecting all the letters to Santa. “Letters need to be dropped into Post Offices by 16 December to make sure Santa has time to reply before Christmas.” “Make sure you put your name and address on the back of the envelope and a stamp on the front,” the helper said. Letters are delivered to Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole. Letters can be placed in the special Santa Mail Boxes at Post Offices.

THE Men’s Shed is so much more than a place for the retired to gather. Toby Walker of Salamander Bay is one of the younger regulars at the Men’s Shed, attending during his down time as a lighting designer. Toby told News Of The Area, “At the Men’s Shed, I get positive male input and guidance to learn skills I wouldn’t otherwise be able to.” Mentoring is tailored to meet the individual’s needs and matched to the most suitable volunteer. Mentoring is available to all age groups, backgrounds and experience. The door is always open for new members. Along with their own projects, which are donated to the Recycling Centre for sale, the Men’s Shed is heavily involved within the community, some of their previous undertakings have included community seating areas, private creations and council projects. The Men’s Shed encourages and welcomes community involvement, and for a reasonable cost, you can
have them make anything from a small jewellery box to, well, just about anything. One project they are currently working on is a display cabinet for a puppet, complete with glass and lighting. Working collaboratively with Salamander Bay Recycling Centre, (who support the Men’s Shed financially), the environment is community supported and based. John Weaver, Chairman of the Men’s Shed Committee said, “We are an eclectic group of people here and I feel we are stronger for it.” “We are currently revitalising our business plan for the fourth year, and will continue to engage with the community and encourage the public to utilise our service and to give us some interesting projects.” Backgrounds vary from engineering, butcher, air force and one member, Roley Manton, has recently been accepted into Tamworth Country Music Hall of Fame. occasion, enjoying fun and fellowship while patiently waiting for Santa to put in an appearance. Although Santa is a busy man at this time of year, he still made time for his favourite Probus club and came striding up the hill to much applause. Santa’s elves, Robyn and
Margaret, had prepared the gifts for everyone who was gathered in anticipation. “President Ron and the elves called each person up for their present,” Publicity Officer Ann Gibson told Bay News Of The Area. “Santa was all kissed and hugged out by the end of the evening and had to be helped

Over $100,000 back
Nelson Bay Rotary Club should be congratulated for the total funds that have been raised
By Jewell DRURY
THE MAGIC of Rotary is that it allows ordinary people to achieve the most extraordinary things. Using the powerful synergy of one, people of Rotary unite to achieve exceptional change. Many members of Rotary have developed projects that have brought significant change whilst experiencing personal growth in an organisation that is respected worldwide for its high values and standards. At the recent Nelson Bays Rotary Club’s Awards night, Community Services Director Chris Bartlett gave members and guests a brief overview of the Club’s Community activities over
the past two months. The Nelson Bay Rotary Club has been extremely busy, which has resulted in over $100,000 being given or allocated for Community Projects. $35,000 was raised for the Port Stephens Women In Crisis Group for their building project. A payment of $36,000 through Federal and Rotary Foundation grant funds was given for mechanical Gym equipment for Stage Two of the Nelson Bay Rotary Fitness Trail. $25,000, the proceeds from the Charity Golf Day, was allocated for the completion of the Fitness Trail. $4,500 was raised for the Tomaree Special Education School for playground equipment.
The Geoff Richardson Appeal through Richo’s Rugby Day raised $1800. A $1,400 donation was made to Anna Bay Public School for Years 3 to 6 kids’ playground equipment. $1,000 was given to Nelson Bay Anglican Church for the Vanuatu School Supplies Project and to the Nelson Bay Junior Rugby team’s Vanuatu school/ hospital supplies project. $250 was given to Safari, the burns victim from Africa, who was on the television program RPA, for the Kenyan School Education Project. The Nelson Bay Rotary Club should be congratulated for the total funds that have been raised over the past two months adding up to a grand total of $105,950.

A motion was passed regarding Mambo Wanda Wetlands to be considered for nomination as a Wetland of International Significance under the Ramsar Convention. This is the first stage of what is likely to be a lengthy process, somewhere between three to five years. Due to the nature of the proposal, detailed surveys must support the application which will involve monitoring the movement of wildlife, fauna and flora during the
four seasons. Currently, there is very little documented and it was suggested that this needs to change, not only from the perspective of this proposal but for general interest. Whilst there was a good turn-out for the forum, there is a need for volunteers and those with specific experience, ecologist, botanist, tertiary education/ experience in Wetlands to serve on the committee. St Philip’s Christian College Port Stephens
From Little Things Big Things Grow ALMOST 22 years ago, a new school was built on the Tomaree Peninsula. Commencing with just 42 students, it is truly remarkable that enrolments are now approaching 800 with plans for 1200 students in the not too distant future. Today as you drive past St Philip’s Christian College Port Stephens you can’t help but notice that the place is abuzz. The College was birthed in 1995 through the vision of a
handful of praying locals who contacted Mr Graeme Irwin, the founder of St Philip’s Christian College, Waratah. Their vision was based upon the belief that the Tomaree Peninsula had a need for an independent school that would develop the whole child intellectually, socially, physically and spiritually. Mr Chris Walkling was the Founding Principal of the School with the first classes commencing February 1, 1995.
Chris was a man of great conviction, passion, integrity, love, determination, graciousness, inspiration and humility. He believed in the purity and creative beauty of children and believed implicitly in the notion of ‘from little things big things grow,’ and reinforced the creative genius and potential in all of his students. A caring community was created through these relationships that saw the
school grow through word of mouth recommendations seeing the school move into secondary education with the establishment of Year 7. “The teachers, students and parents were a unique family in those early days,” Jan Bestmann, a parent of five children who attended St Philip’s, told Bay News Of The Area. “We saw our children encouraged to step up into their dreams, to reach high and stretch themselves during their time

at the best school in the Southern Hemisphere,” Mrs Bestmann said. “Many of us have beautiful memories of the amazing teachers brought to Port Stephens for the purpose of training up our children and we are so grateful for the gems placed into their young hearts.” In 2001 the first group of School Certificate students graduated and in 2004 the first HSC students were awarded their certificates with outstanding results across a wide range of subject areas. Next week we will continue with the St Philip’s journey from 2004 to the present.

Roley Manton, a Country Music Icon By Jewell DRURY
ROLEY Manton is an Australian country music cultural icon and we are lucky enough to be able to call him one of the Bay ‘locals’. Playing alongside Australian Country Legends including Slim Dusty at the Denman Hall, has given him notoriety in the Country Music Scene. With a career spanning several decades, Roley began his singing career at five years of age with a ukulele, which he still has as part of his treasured keepsakes. His father was a great ukulele player and guitarist and they would often perform together in shows when Roley was younger. Roley’s mother played piano and his brother a mouth organ and in a few short years Roley had progressed from playing the ukulele to playing a steel string guitar and later to playing a hillbilly or Spanish guitar. Roley’s first concert was at the Denman Hotel with Australia’s well known country singer Reg Lindsay. Another highlight of Roley’s musical career was when he played with Buddy Williams as well as performing a full show at the Aberdeen RSL with the great guitarist and singer the late, great Tim McNamara. Roley played for many years at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, singing in the ‘Hands of Fame’ park and in the Southgate shopping Centre.
“While I have the capability of playing music and singing, I will hopefully continue to till I am 100 years old,” Roley Manton told Bay News Of The Area. “ I love playing in our local area at different venues and in my spare time I love to go fishing,” Roley said. A singer songwriter, Roley Manton has recorded many of his songs including, ‘Farewell Gunsynd’ a song about Australia’s famous racehorse Gunsynd or better known as ‘The Goondiwindi Grey’. The flip side of the record was a song called ‘The Man from Barrington’ which was based on Noel Roley Everett, and had many sales earning Roley with a special award. Most of Roley Manton’s younger years involved him as a rodeo competitor winning many awards including Murrurundi NSW Championship as well as All Round Cowboy at Denman. Roley has performed every year at The Murrurundi King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge since it’s inception. Today you will find Roley Manton performing at the Nelson Bay Markets, various festivals, in clubs, at Christmas concerts as well as being asked to perform on a regular basis in various venues in the Nelson Bay area. ‘Hey Hey Nelson Bay’, a Manton original, can be often heard played over the airwaves on Port Stephens 100.9 FM.

has helped coordinate the project, liaising with a host of business and professional organisations, along with school staff and students to achieve an exceptional outcome. The brick barbecue structure was constructed by up to 12 students through three days of searing heat. The students were identified and chosen by the school’s Wellbeing teacher Scott O’Hara and construction was completed under the expert tutelage and guidance of Brick & Blocklayers Training Foundation’s (BBTF) Brendan Coyle.
Many of the students had never laid a brick or mixed cement before and yet the team was able to complete the mammoth structure, including rendering, in under four days. “It’s been a real learning curve. I have enjoyed the work and Brendan has been great to work with,”Year 9 student Cody Pool said. “It gives you a real sense of achievement.” The barbecue has only been made possible through the generous donations of a number of organisations, including the
BBTF, a $5,000 grant from Port Stephens Council, Valley Homes, who provided the bricks and mortar, Bunnings Port Stephens, and school staff, most notably Jim McColl and Ron O’Neill. The surrounding garden has also undergone a makeover, with the planting of more than $500 worth of native and edible plants (courtesy of the school P & C), painting of decking and seats and the design and laying of new pathways. The school’s Aboriginal Education Engagement Officer Lisa Martin has worked tirelessly

THE Tomaree High School Growing Together Reconciliation Garden is in the process of receiving a complete overhaul. In addition to refurbishing and upgrading the garden’s physical appearance, an impressive undercover barbecue brick structure was last week constructed through the efforts of students and teachers. with her students to ensure the area bears the true essence and representation of an indigenous meeting place. “We have spent many hours clearing fallen leaves and branches, planting natives and edibles, painting structures, building pathways and generally tidying up both the gardens and smoking pit areas,” Ms Martin said. “It is something not only the Aboriginal population, but the entire school community, can be proud of.” An official opening is expected to be performed before the end of the 2016 school year.

Tough Challenge for Championships Nelson Bay Golf Club By David BIRSS THE final round of the Men’s Club Championships was played on Sunday 20 November. Players were competing within their Grades for Winner and Runner-up placings in both Scratch and Net score formats. In conjunction with the Grade placings, some players had qualified to compete for Senior Champion and others for Junior Champion. In total there were 14 categories of awards within the Championship
event. In the final round of the A Grade group, two players emerged through the middle section as the likely contenders for the Winner and Runner-up placings. Adding to the tension was the fact that one of the two players, Connor Benjamin, was in the Junior category. Over the final three holes the eventual Winner, Peter Gibson, drew ahead to take that Grade. In the B Grade group, one player had made his mark with
a four shot lead going into the final round. Chris Mawson, a player from the morning round who realised he had a very good score, decided to stay at the Clubhouse in the event that he could be in a ‘play-off’. His patience paid-off. The play-off format was over three holes, with the winner, Eric Kidd, winning by two shots over Chris. In the C Grade group, one player had a handy six shot lead going into the final round. After nine holes that lead was
still intact. Despite a slight hiccup on the 15th hole, Sam Cockburn maintained his lead and concluded as the winner over Doug Dohnt. The Men’s Club Championships is the final event of the competition season at the Golf Club. All details of the final positions within each of the categories can be found in this edition of Bay News Of The Area.

Ronald Bergan, Liz Bergan and Dave Kilroy proudly displayed their haul of medals from their recent success at Pan Pacific Masters Games at Jupiter’s on the Gold Coast. Dave Kilroy, 65 of Nelson Bay, brought home 7 medals consisting of 3 gold and 4 silver. Mr Kilroy told News of the Area, “I started this style of martial arts three-and-a-half years ago, before that I was doing ITF style for six years.” “Wanting to keep fit, learn self-defence and remain

Mr Bergan would like to thank their sponsors, Village Grind, Novus Auto Glass and Wear Kids Play for their continued support. Mr Bergan said, “People need to know it is a sport and not ‘just’ martial art.” The team at Him-Do Tae Kwon Do are currently organising the Third Port Stephens Taekwondo Championship taking place in March 2017. AS reported last week, the Fingal Bay Sports Club have had some huge regional success whereby their two teams went right to the finals, against each other, to compete for the top prize. Never before in the 3x3s Men’s competition, within Newcastle District Bowls Association, have two teams from the same club made it right through to play off for the winning position. It was a historic and momentous occasion for the Final Bay Club.
In a grueling match the Final Bay Team 2 defeated Team 1 by a mere 7 points 66/59. Number 2 [team] were number one winners. It didn’t all go Team 2’s way. It was a tough game and Team 1 were not only were hard to shake on the green, but even afterwards they managed to get their photo in the local press as the winners of the event. In error. Nice try boys! The Team 2 victors were made up of Des Roberts, Michael Hoban, Arthur Nowland, Graham Weekes, Dave (Willy) Williams, Jim
Partridge, John Gilligan, Ron Cowie and Dale Watterson. Team Manager Des Roberts told News Of The Area, “The No2 team exceeded their expectations of winning.” Dale Watterson, greenkeeper, said, “They [The Number 2 team] were exuberant to win the Newcastle District 3x3s Final over the Number 1 team.” News Of The Area had great fun covering this story and look forward to more exciting news and results from the Club.

Most Elite Savers THE toughest, most elite lifesavers in the world faced each other for Round 3 of Summer of Surf at Fingal Bay on Sunday. The Summer of Surf is televised nationally on Australia’s premier sports network Fox Sports. Capturing all of the action on the water and sand, the stars of the sport are featured like they have never been seen before. The Summer of Surf showcases the Surf Ironman Qualifying Series, Australian Surf Ski Series, First National Board Series, Australian Surf Swim Series, Australian Taplin Series and Australian Beach Flags Series. The end of Round 3 found Newport ironman Kendrick Louis as winner of the Ironman Event. Kendrick had plenty to prove at Fingal Bay after a disappointing performance at his home beach in the last round of the Summer of Surf. He was forced to dig deep, beating James Lacey in a run up the beach. Kurrawa’s Rebecca Creedy was the winner of the Ironwoman Event.
Nothing was more motivational for the former Commonwealth Games Swimmer than losing a race she felt she should have won a fortnight ago. Creedy was victorious in the winner’s circle in the third round of Summers of Surf Series at Fingal Bay, after holding off Sydney surf lifesaver Lizzie Welborn for the win. “This was a great day and a very well run, efficient event with great competitors,” Samantha Faragher, a volunteer official for the event, told Bay News Of The Area. “Fingal Bay Surf Club should be congratulated on a great job hosting this event,” Ms Faragher said. Other results on the day included First National Real Estate Female Board Race winner Amy Nurthen and the First National Real Estate Male Board Race winner Max Brooks. The Run Swim Run event was won by Kendrick Louis. Aussiebodies Male Taplin was won by BMD Northcliffe and the Open Male Swim winner was Matt Poole. White Ribbon Australia’s Ski Race was won by Riley Fitzz.
