“I AM going to miss being there on ANZAC Day,”Corporal Sean Sullivan told News Of The Area. Sean is a RAAF Avionics Technician based at Williamtown and is currently on deployment. His wife Ren, and daughters Josie, Annie, Polly
and Mindy, will be proudly attending local ANZAC services in his honour. “We are very proud of the job that he does,” Ren said. “It is really important to show our support to all people who have served, and to the people who are currently serving.”

WEEKLY
RENEW Nelson Bay is based on a model called, “Renew Newcastle”. Renew Newcastle was established to find short and medium term uses for buildings in Newcastle’s CBD that are currently vacant, disused, or awaiting redevelopment.
CONTINUED Page 2
Founder Marcus Westbury’s aim with the project was to find artists, cultural projects and community groups to use and maintain these buildings until they become commercially viable or are redeveloped. The model has been replicated around the world with great success. “We have begun using the role model here in the Nelson Bay CBD and it is working well,” Ryan Palmer, President of Tomaree Business Chamber told Bay News of CONTINUED Page 2

The hardest of part of being in service is - missing the family FROM Page 1
Sean is away for around six months each year, which Ren said has a big impact on the family. “He can’t tell me a lot when he is in a warzone, but we certainly know that they’re going through very trying times at different points,” she said. “I just try and make sure that the girls stay in contact with their father while he is away.” Sean has missed countless birthdays and other special events including Christmas, Father’s Day, Easter and ANZAC Day throughout his 12 years of service. “We just try and find creative ways to fill in

those times, even if it is a laptop with him on it at the Christmas table,” Ren said. “We do lots of crazy things like take silly photos and make sure that there is a happy birthday message in there somewhere.” Although Ren and the girls miss Sean when he is away, they are very supportive of his service. “It is a great career for him, so though I would like him home a bit more, I think it is really important that we have serving members,” she said. “People in the community have been wonderful, they always come around and see how we’re going, they’re very supportive of both our family and what Sean does.” For Sean, the hardest part of deployment is being separated from his family. “I count down the days until I can return home and see them,” he said.

The Write Stuff By Jo FINN
SALAMANDER Bay author, editor and publisher Morgan Bell encourages writers to “get involved” in the local and online writing scene. “Join a writing group, in person or online (try facebook.com/groups/ flashfictionchallenge/) and get involved with your local writers’ centre and writers’ festivals,” she said. “If you can’t afford workshops, volunteer.” Morgan certainly embraces her suggestions. She has been a regular volunteer at the Newcastle Writers Festival since its inception and has also honed her skills by writing online reviews and blogs. She currently works as the Social Media Content Manager at Hunter Writers Centre, integrating her love of the written word with her vast social media experience. Morgan is particularly drawn to flash fiction, a genre that embraces paring back a story to its essential elements. Her debut collection is called
Sniggerless Boundulations, a title that came to her in a vivid dream. The book’s stories cover a broad spectrum of subject matter ranging from bizarre medical conditions, conniving cops, nonchalant students and a secret garden. The short story format also suits her technical writing background. “Coming from an engineering report background, I tend to not like padding. A little story is rewarding when it is both rich and spare,” she said. “I think reading and storytelling are pursuits that shouldn’t be limited to people with long attention spans,” she told News Of The Area. For new writers, Morgan recommends taking small steps. “Start small. Start with flash fiction, it is a gateway drug. And read aloud when editing,” she said. Morgan’s hardcover version of Sproutlings: A Compendium of Little Fictions is the latest success in her innovative approach to writing and publishing. The original paperback anthology was made possible through a Kickstarter

THIS week, this News Of The Area reporter turned left and went West, spending time in Coonamble, New South Wales. I had the pleasure of meeting with a like-minded reporter, and relatively new editor of the Historical Coonamble Times, Lee O’Connor. Lee recently purchased the Coonamble Times, which has been operating in Coonamble since 1885, 100 years longer than Myall Coast NOTA. Lee runs the paper by herself, with only two casual staff, who all do a combination of roles. Lee remarked that only one of them had prior newspaper experience when she took over the paper, and it wasn’t her. Like our three News Of The Area publications, the Coonamble Times publishes weekly on a Wednesday. NOTA comes out on Thursdays. However, whilst our population reach may be similar, the geographical reach of the Coonamble Times is much larger, distributing to a massive country area in comparison, around 20,000 square kilometres. This area contains six communities ranging in size
from a couple of dozen people up to around 3700. Many of their readers are scattered around on farms, some of them over an hour’s drive away from the nearest newsagent. Lee told News Of The Area, “Believe it or not, we usually have more news and community happenings than will fit in the paper.” “We are supported by a local group of business and community advertisers, volunteer contributors and generous photographers, making it a real community effort,” she said. Coonamble Times operates from a small historic shop front in the main street of Coonamble. It was a wonderful experience learning about the Coonamble Times, and sharing in our enjoyment of the special part we play within our own respective communities. Lee said, “I am pleased to report that, from conversations with locals around why they read the Coonamble Times and what they want to see, the ‘care factor’ for this local rag is off the charts.” “Our stories matter, and I am quickly learning that it takes a whole community to run a newspaper.”

interesting insight on planned improvements to Nelson Bay,” Margaret Wilkinson, Nelson Bay View Club’s publicity officer told Bay News Of The Area. Next month the Club is privileged to have as their guest speaker for the 4 May luncheon, Linda Emery, researcher and historian for the popular television series “Who Do you Think You Are?” The cost is $25 and the function begins at 11am at Soldiers Point Bowling Club. The Club has arranged an exciting Cavalcade of Exquisite Craft afternoon featuring the works of Olive O’Kane and other talented presenters to be held on Saturday 13 May, at 2pm

in the Community Hall at Norburn Avenue, Nelson Bay. A limited number of tickets are available at a cost of $20 from Black Pepper at Salamander or any VIEW Club member and includes a delicious afternoon tea. The funds raised from this function will go towards sponsorship of 10 Learning for Life students to assist with their education. “This is one event on the calendar not to be missed by anyone with a love of craft,” Ms Wilkinson said. Auction Hauls in Crowd By Jo FINN
EASTER holiday tourists and locals were treated to a live auction with a difference on Nelson Bay foreshore on the long weekend. The booming voices and tactics of Joe Martindale and Patrick Mullins rivalled those of seasoned property auctioneers, but eager members of the bidding crowd were not bargaining for prime waterfront real estate.
Instead they were haggling over seafood caught by competitors in the Australian Pacific Coast Championships. The two-day auction hosted by the Newcastle Neptunes is an annual Easter event that draws huge crowds to the foreshore. Traditionally, the Easter weekend brings overcast weather and rough seas, so the perfect autumn conditions drew even greater numbers than usual.
Located near d’albora Marina, the charity auction gave visitors to Nelson Bay a prime opportunity to bid for fish fresh from the ocean. Competitors weighed in their species and then loaded them straight onto an iceddown display table ready for auction. The bidding amounts rose rapidly in $10 increments, with auctioneers Joe and Patrick joking with the enthusiastic crowd and egging on rival bidders.
“Are you scratching your ear or is that another $10?” Joe quipped to the audience, inciting laughter. Some of the amounts pledged were astonishing, with one man paying $80 for four bream. With the funds raised to support the Westpac Helicopter Service, all offers were on the table and

the money was gratefully received. Families left with bags full of fish, and the smorgasbord of species was impressive. Luderick, bream, flathead, trevally, bonito and kingfish were popular choices and a firm indication that fish species are abundant at this time of year.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
I have fallen for my rather hunky neighbour, but he doesn’t seem to notice me. What should I do? Ms ES, Anna Bay Dear Ms ES, TALL and tan and young and handsome, the boy from Anna Bay goes walking and when he passes, Ms ES goes ‘ah’. You know that song just doesn’t have the same sultry vibe when you replace Ipanema with Anna Bay, Ms ES, but it was worth a shot. There are certain logistical advantages to your fantasy. If it all goes well, you could put in a shared boundary access gate to save time, or knock down both houses and commence a townhouse development, subject to council approval (good luck with that one). But what if it all goes pear shaped? You don’t want to have to move suburbs due to unrequited love. You know, Jasminda once had a fatal attraction to her neighbour. It was based on his assortment of paisley ties hanging from the washing line and the way he could ride up the 75 degree shared driveway on his Malvern Star. It didn’t take much to get Jasminda’s heart pumping back in the day. But alas, like your man, he just didn’t notice the lovestruck 12-year-old gazing out her bedroom window. Or, if he did, he kept his eyes averted. Just as well, in hindsight, given the age gap. Why don’t you ask your neighbour over for a homecooked meal one night? If he says no and he lives on his own, then you have your answer. No single male will reject a free meal within 50 metres of their front door. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

COUNCIL’S Planners have recommended that a DA for an 8-storey block, rising 29-32 metres, be approved for 11-13 Church Street, Nelson Bay. This is more than double the existing allowable height under the current LEP. The recommendation is made despite the fact that Council has just received submissions on its Discussion Paper for the revision of the 2012 Nelson Bay Town and Foreshore Strategy. A key issue in this Paper was the policy on building heights in the town centre.
Proposals to lift heights across the entire town attracted much community concern in a recent TRRA public meeting attended by 200 residents, in community organisations and in the local media. TRRA had called for the Council to hold off a decision on the Ascent apartments until the results of the discussion paper are determined later this year. TRRA was encouraged by Council’s referral of the plans to an independent design review panel, Newcastle’s Urban Design Consultative Group (UDCG). UDCG’s report is included in the 11 April Agenda papers for all Councillors to read.
UDCG’s report on the proposal was highly critical, concluding that “[The Group] could not support the proposal even if it complied with the 17.5 metre height limit…” and “... the application cannot be supported”. The report expressly states that “...it cannot be agreed that the overall design achieves “design excellence”. It also states the “the height and bulk are both excessive” and that “the lack of daylight and ventilation to the internal corridors ... is a further fundamental shortcoming, which cannot be overcome without major re-design”. The 2012 Strategy included a provision to grant
a bonus of an two extra storeys on certain high potential sites but only if a proposal achieved outstanding design excellence and made a significant contribution to strategic public benefits such as improvements in the public domain. It is very difficult to see how the planners could recommend approval which would pre-empt the outcome of the Strategy Review and in face of the damning independent review of the design. TRRA will be very disappointed if Councillors also jump the gun on this approval. Geoff Washington President TRRA.
By Jewell DRURY IN a coup for local real estate professionals Bonnie Roosendaal and Debra O’Neill have purchased Raine & Horne Nelson Bay. The dynamic female duo have acquired Raine & Horne Nelson Bay, which launched in 1992, from outgoing principal, Ray Noonan, and his wife, Heather. “Ray has done a wonderful job making Raine & Horne Nelson Bay a leading real estate brand in the region, and we are proud to have him stay on,” Ms Roosendaal told Bay News Of The Area. Raised in the Bay, Ms Roosendaal began her real estate career in 1986 in Sydney’s St George and Sutherland Shire region, before returning to Nelson Bay in 2006. She is highly regarded as a sales agent and has led sales teams in other notable Nelson Bay real estate businesses. Mrs O’Neill started her property career in Newcastle in 1992 with an independent real estate firm. In 2006, she was tasked with launching its office in Nelson Bay.

O’Neill believe two of the key factors that will drive the success of Raine & Horne Nelson Bay are their complementary skill sets and also the benefit of having two female principals at the helm. Mr Noonan, who started with Raine & Horne Nelson
Bay in 1993, will remain as a sales agent. Mrs Noonan, who led the firm’s holiday rental business, has recently retired. Mrs O’Neill and Ms Roosendaal look forward to working with their team to grow the business.

asking local schools what outreach onsite programmes on mental health they are currently sourcing. There are several organisations that do such programs, some of which are budget constrained, which is where COPSY may be able to help. COPSY Inc. is a registered charity, not a service provider, and its aim is to facilitate and help fund best practice mental health promotion and awareness in school programs, as well as considering other initiatives including the promotion of online resources and early intervention models. “We are pleased to announce that there are a couple of exciting events coming up that will help promote improved youth

Scouts complete Leadership course
q Enthusiastic and hard-working Youth Leaders attended the Scout Leadership Course. Please support the advertisers within the Bay News Of The Area
By Rachael VAUGHAN LAST weekend saw the District Scout Leader for Port Stephens run another highly successful Scout Leadership Course at the 1st Tilligerry Scout Hall. A total of 11 young people were in attendance. They represented various Scout Troops within the district. The Scout Leadership Course is an Award Scheme course designed for Scouts who have completed their Pioneer Badge. It has content suitable for 12 and 13-year-old Scouts who are keen to develop their leadership skills. The course has a practical ‘hands-on’ approach and is organised around the Patrol System. The weekend puts all attending youth in situations they have never had to deal with before as leaders. They put their skills to the test, and are forced to think outside the box to be able to complete tasks, and work together as a patrol that depends on each other.
One such activity required the young people to work together as a team and put up a four person tent, whilst blindfolded. The District Scout Leader of Port Stephens, Dennis Conroy, told News Of The Area, “We had a campfire with singing, skits and a ‘Scouts Own’ run by the youth, which is a fantastic time of reflection.” “During the day, a challenge required all attendees to eat an orange with a spoon, scooping it out so as not to damage the peel so we could use the orange skin to cook a chocolate cake within it on the hot fire and coals that night.” “Nothing better than a warm chocolate and orange flavoured cake for supper,” he said. The course follows the Scouts Australia National Award Scheme Scout Leadership Course requirements. As such, it is the course that is recognised to gain the Scout Leadership Course badge, a requirement of the Australian Scout Medallion.

The Tough Dog Tuff Truck Challenge (TTC) is a 4WD competition event, that’s about as hard as they come for events in this field. It is gruelling and enduring, and provides a real test for competing teams as they push themselves and their vehicles to the absolute limit. Teams compete in a series of events and in extreme terrains. Each team has two people, and their vehicle. They must complete 12 stages over three days, consisting of one static stage, 10 driving sections and a
verification stage where compliance of vehicles and regulations are checked. The trucks must navigate boulders, rocks, mud, giant tyres, and deep holes and ruts to take out the honours and come home victorious. From humble beginnings with only 33 competitors, to the event restricted 75 team limit event that took place this year, the Tuff Truck Challenge has become one of the biggest and most widely attended events on the Australian 4WD event calendar. Driver Tim Scutt told News Of The Area, ‘We are

TEAM Redzook, consisting of driver Tim Scutt and navigator Luke Schmahl, this week took out second place in the fiercely contested ‘Tuff Truck Australia’ event. This national event was held at Milbrodale, NSW over three days in April, and saw 67 teams compete for the highly sought after titles. Team Redzook, Port Stephens locals, worked hard to place second, and only 24 points behind first place. They also won two of the stages: Engineering and Jawbreaker.

proud to have come away with such a good result in such a tough competition.” “We want to thank all the people who helped us make this happen, our friends, family, followers and our great sponsors.” “The Zuk worked really well over the weekend, with our only issue being a bolt coming loose, with no prep work on the car before the event, it really is a testament to the strength and reliability of the car,” he said. The Redzook team would also like to acknowledge their sponsors: Glenwood Rural Buildings Pty Ltd, JMW Engineering, Steeline Hunter, Academy Sheetmetal Pty Ltd and Low Range Off-Road.

AUSTRALIAN Masters Figure Champion, personal trainer and exceptional role model to those who know her, Joy Flint, of Corlette, has just received her ranking after her attendance at The Arnold’s in Melbourne recently. Setting her sights on being in the top ten, coming in ninth, she missed out on joint seventh/ eighth position by two points in a very strong line-up.
However, Joy battles with anxiety daily, even more so to get onto stage, and yet to watch her perform, she looked relaxed, graceful and happy. Joy said, “We all have something we struggle with, something we have to overcome, I compete with myself not the others on stage with me.” “This year I received feedback from a judge who remembered me from last

year, when he told me how much better I was this year, that was the biggest compliment.” For Joy, it is not about the actual placing within the competition, it is about how far she has come. “I strive each day to be a better me than I was last year, last week or yesterday,” Joy told News Of The Area. “After giving myself a break from training, I am back with my coach and working towards the next event.” Joy explained that having a coach is essential as it makes her accountable and
sees the cost as an investment in her health rather than a luxury or expense. “To get the most out of your relationship with your coach, you must have trust, honesty and follow the plan created personally for you,” Joy said. “As a personal trainer and co-owner of PT Fitness, it is important and of benefit to our members that I continue to learn the science behind good nutrition for both weight loss and muscle building which is why I am constantly learning.”
