Walk the Labyrinth By Marian SAMPSON

AN amazing labyrinth has been created in Iluka reserve at Boat Harbour. The painted labyrinth is in the style of Chartres Cathedral. Within the hour of the work being completed, adults and children were following the path. The labyrinth forms a walking meditation that is as ancient as Greek Mythology and the pyramids. The labyrinth adds to the charm of Iluka Reserve which has walking paths, a cairn, and a whale watching platform. The reserve also has the Solace Garden with Port Stephens Suicide Prevention seat, plinth, and a new barbecue. The creators of the labyrinth are inviting locals to explore it, either as singles or in groups. The group wants people

Aboriginal culture. Port Stephens Council is developing a Management Plan for Birubi Point, Aboriginal Place and will soon be conducting a community consultation on the plans. Steve Bernasconi of

Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “Developing the Plan of Management is a collaboration between Council and the Worimi to successfully manage the site, a process which has created an understanding

of the cultural significance and values of the Worimi.” “It will also analyse the contemporary values and the area and its demands including the surf club, car parks and amenities.” “The biggest challenge is to build an understanding which will protect the cultural values of the Worimi and Birubi Point as a contemporary recreational space,” he said. Port Stephens Councillor Sally Dover told News Of The Area, “The plan is coming together and it will include a much needed upgraded skate park, as well as improved parking for everyone to access the site.” “The plan will go on public exhibition shortly and it is hoped that after the community feedback and any amendments, it will pass through Council in December.” “It has been wonderful that we have been able to engage so far with so many stakeholders for Birubi Point,” she said. Bay Building Boom By Marian SAMPSON

BUILDING works are set to boom in Nelson Bay after Council approved a six storey residential flat building for the vacant site on the corner of Church and Donald Streets. The building will comprise of 17 apartments including, a one-bedroom apartment; nine two bedroom apartments including one accessible unit, and seven three bedroom apartments. The building plans include 30 onsite car parking spaces, including one accessible space with 26 car parking spaces in the basement level. Clever technology will be used to make the most of space with the parking incorporating a vertical double vehicle stacking arrangement for eight

parking spaces. There are two new building projects now approved for the Nelson Bay CBD seeing some long awaited positive development. The Development Application (DA) is for a building of 20.7m in height with the new residential block seen as creating a high quality building at one of the main entry points to the Nelson Bay CBD. The development is consistent with the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshores Strategy adopted in 2012, which includes a building height ‘bonus’ of two storeys for the Nelson Bay CBD if the building demonstrated design excellence and strategic public benefit can be demonstrated. Councillor Sally Dover

told News Of The Area, “This is an exciting development, the DA was approved unanimously by Council, and I see this and the other

impacting upon agriculture, commercial and recreational fisheries, regional tourism industries, and harming native fish populations and river health.” The students from St Philip’s Christian College have completed infographic posters, with the aim of highlighting the carp situation in the rivers of the Murray Darling Basin. They discovered interesting facts like about the ecology of Australia’s rivers with 80 percent of the fish in our rivers being carp, and that this noxious pest can lay up to 1.5 million eggs each year. Mandy Eggins of St Philip’s Christian College told News Of The Area, “Students were interested and concerned to hear Mr Barwick talk about the problems that the huge carp numbers are having on river water quality and native fish numbers.” “The positive message that Mr Barwick shared was that there is hope for a new control method that could reduce the carp numbers by 90 to 100 percent.” “Students were excited to hear that some of their work may be soon displayed on the (NCCP) website,” she said.

It’s A World Record Human Whale

By Marian SAMPSON

FINGAL Bay in Port Stephens was full of activity last weekend which kicked off with around one hundred runners participating in the parkrun at 8am and then became the epicentre for a world record attempt to create the world’s largest human whale. The 2017 Port Stephens human whale was a World Record with more than one thousand participants. The human whale has been taking place in Port Stephens for many years, moving to Fingal Bay to accommodate larger attendance numbers in 2017. The atmosphere was upbeat with activities and entertainment which included some great group activities including an Earthen Rhythms drumming circle, lead by Benjie. Fingal Bay Surf Life Saving were serving up sausage sandwiches raising money for their volunteer organisation. Also present were National Parks, The Department of Primary Industries and the Fishcare

volunteers, The Wilderness Society, Moonshadow TCQ Cruises, The Imagine White Whale, Fingal Bay Rural Fire Service and Nelson Bay’s Octapod Gallery. Department of Primary Industries staff were keen to educate people on bag limits, restricted seasons and size limits as well as sharing information on the Marine Park no go fishing zones. There was plenty of art and craft activities for kids. Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens, told News Of The Area, “I’m here with my extended family, and we are all excited to be a part of it.” “We have been part of the human whale for years; it’s a really important event as it brings the community together to celebrate Port Stephens and puts Port Stephens on the map.” “I really want to congratulate Frank Future and the team behind this for their energy and passion, which make the event happen,” she said. A whale of a time was had by all.

The Reverend conducts several hundred veteran home and hospital visits each year. Reverend Duffy told News Of The Area, when he was told about the OAM he was in two minds as to whether he should take it, or not, as he was being recognised simply for doing what he does. “It’s important to our veterans that there is someone there; that someone simply cares enough to come.” “All Saints has an extensive pastoral care program supporting the wider community, plus the

Op-Shop in Yacaaba Street, from which 100 percent of the proceeds go into local community programs,” he said. Reverend Duffy is a fourth generation service man, and was in the National Service as a young man. His unit was on-call ready to go to Malaysia to stop the surge of communism through Asia when he was a young man. Service through the armed forces is not the only way that Reverend Duffy’s family have helped in Australia as Rev. Duffy’s sister Jeanette Antrum, who is also a resident of Port Stephens, has also been honoured with an OAM for her services to the community.

of AMPcontrol, talk about managing through the mining boom and the lessons learnt in the crash. Rod gave a candid account of how this Company has used innovation and communication to create a sustainable future. While AMPcontrol was not alone in failing to foresee the market crash,

subsequently shedding staff across their operations and liquidating operations in South Africa. They now have a sustainable, diversified business model across four key sectors: coal, hard rock mining, tunnelling and renewable energy. With a core business of providing safe electrics

infrastructure, Tomago’s AMPcontrol is currently working on major infrastructure projects like Westconnex in Sydney. Taking on input from the floor, using a bottom up and top down approach has seen the organisation evolve into one which is now stronger, robust, focusing on what they are good at, smarter cheaper and better than the competition.

Rod Henderson told News Of The Area, “There is a real need for first class training, this year the business plans to take on eight apprentices, three to four trainees and three to four university graduates.” “In many ways it is good that young people leave the area and gain broader experience and then return bringing a new level of experience and expertise into

our workforce.” “AMPcontrol employs around 200 staff at our Tomago facility alone,” he said. Port Stephens Council’s General Manager Wayne Wallis said, “We are incredibly well positioned for business in Port Stephens; we are on the doorstep to two Ports and we have the ability to deliver on a world class level.”

Port Stephens Businesses Snake appearance at Probus meeting Network with Government By Marian SAMPSON

WORD ON THE STREET

q Port Stephens Councillor and Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan.

q Port Stephens Women In Business Pres. Kylie Smilie.

Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan “It is good for Council to put together opportunities where business can tap into economic development opportunities.” “Improving our economic development is critical ultimately to create jobs and for the future of the area,” he said.

Kylie Smilie President of Port Stephens Women in Business “The best thing about events like this is it creates the opportunity to meet people you might not normally get to meet and it is helping us to raise the profile of Port Stephens Women in Business.”

SNAKES made a surprise visit to the Probus Club of Fingal Bay’s July meeting. Guest presenter Teresa Purnell brought one of the snakes on which she based her PhD project at the University of Newcastle. Teresa said, “So often when people realise snakes are involved, half the audience seems to make straight for the door!” “They miss out on information and ideas about how to react when a snake appears, in our homes or while we are walking in the bush,” she said. Not all reptiles are killers, and they are protected by law, so it is wise to call for help. The Hunter Wildlife Rescue staff can advise on immediate action and help with removal. Teresa has been a volunteer at Hunter Wildlife Rescue for nine years and says it is surprising how many “help me” calls are received each week.

During the informative presentation, Teresa showed illustrations to assist in recognising various species, and gave advice on safety procedures. These included, standing still as snakes are usually more anxious to get away from you than you are from them. It’s also a good idea to take a photo if possible, to help with identification. You can contact Hunter Wildlife Rescue on 0418 628 483. The club’s Joint Vice President Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “It was a fascinating meeting, with some rather unexpected reactions.” “The club has had a variety of guest speakers and this was definitely one of the more unusual presentations,” she said. The Probus Club of Fingal Bay meets on the second Monday of every month at 9.30am at The Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club.

A Musical Farewell OPINION Dear News Of The Area, AS past Musical Director and inaugural President, on my retirement from conducting the SeaSide Singers Community Choir, I wish to thank the people of Port Stephens for their love, cooperation and support you have shown me personally and the choir since our inception in 2009. At our various concerts you have faithfully turned up to hear our latest jazz numbers, classical opera, peace days songs and Aussie favourites. As founder, with my husband Ron and some dedicated music lovers turned singers, we are grateful that you have stayed with us, as audiences and as businesses or clubs booking us for gigs. Thanks also to the people and organisations that have helped keep this choir afloat - the Port Stephens Council, Radio 100.9, News Of The Area newspapers and the Soldiers Point Bowling Club. Thank you for all your good wishes. I have had a ball and I hope to see you at our next event!

Kutcha Moment Captured OPINION Dear News Of The Area, IN last week’s Bay News Of The Area (page 12) you gave the golf results of the local clubs. The paper refers to the Nelson Bay Veterans group’s annual Kutcha award. This cup was presented by Dr Stan Kutcha of Salamander Medical Practice. Affectionately known as the “Dad’s Army Trophy” it was won this year by Richard Thompson. He looked so chuffed with himself that I grabbed him on my phone camera.

The Port’s New Rocktioneer By Jo FINN

q Rocktioneer: Craig ‘Rosie’ Rosevear.

MARCHING to the beat of his own drum (and gavel), Craig ‘Rosie’ Rosevear is adding auctioneer to his list of talents. The former Screaming Jets drummer and director of Rosie’s School of Rock recently won the local heat of the Real Estate of NSW Novice Auctioneer Competition and is keen to pursue his new career in Port Stephens. Craig told News Of The Area that the leap from rock drummer to auctioneer isn’t as broad as people may first think. “Being an auctioneer is very similar to being a musician; you are there to engage the people and create

excitement.” “These days I use a gavel instead of a set of sticks,” he said. Craig or ‘Rosie’ as he is known to many in the music industry, is undoubtedly experienced at drawing a crowd and he is keen to transfer those skills to the real estate industry. “I am a naturally friendly and outgoing person; this is a great attribute to have as an auctioneer,” he said. “For many buyers and sellers, the auction will be the biggest financial transaction of their lives; it’s important for them to feel relaxed and not intimidated by the process.” Port Stephens was an obvious choice for Craig.

“Port Stephens is a fantastic place to raise a family, with a healthy lifestyle surrounded by beautiful beaches,” he said. “There are great schools and lots of sporting options any day of the week; this makes the region very appealing to live.” “The diversity of properties available for sale within a relatively small geographical area makes it very interesting as an auctioneer, from first home buyers, to investment properties to multi-milliondollar waterfront mansions – this place has it all.” Despite the exciting career change, Rosie’s School of Rock will continue. Let’s raise our gavels to that.

Naturefest six weeks of Port’s natural wonders

By Marian SAMPSON

NATUREFEST has had a huge impact on Port Stephens, with the event spanning six weeks celebrating the natural assets of our region. Just some of the highlights of the event have been Koala Gala where hundreds gathered to see the animation depicting the need for koalas to migrate due to dwindling habitat which was developed using art from the primary schools on Tomaree Peninsula. Hundreds of people have gotten their Whale On and spotted lots of whales as they migrate north to warmer waters. We have seen spooky tours of the Tomaree Headland gun emplacements, rambles through the rock pools at Boat Harbour and an amazing human koala at Tilligerry Habitat. The human koala was created by Mark McDougall of local business Northpoint Surveys who created the original festival human koala and whale designs and survey. Locals alongside Australian and international tourists have stood on headlands watching whales go by.

Hundreds of photos have been taken for the Shutterfest competition and thousands more are on cameras, phones and social media. Free music performances and education have all played a part in the festival which has created a huge awareness of the unique environment of Port Stephens for locals and our visitors. Danny Eather of Destination Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “Naturefest has proven to be another great success with many local businesses and community groups coming together to deliver a strong program of events.” “The aim of Naturefest has always been to celebrate and promote the region as one of NSW’s premier nature destinations not only to local residents but importantly to our many visitors that choose to enjoy a short break in Port Stephens during the lowseason.” “It is important that events like Naturefest happen each year in order to showcase that we are truly an all year round destination, not just a summer destination, and I feel that we have delivered upon this with great success,” he said.
