Friends for Life By Mandy ELLIS
THE Port Stephens Friendship Group held a lunch at Baroque Nelson Bay to celebrate the election of the new president and committee. It is an independent, not-for-profit social group for men and ladies, founded by local resident Bev Lee in 1995, after she recognised there were many in the community who needed to simply meet new friends. The focus of the group is solely on friendship and is supported by a hardworking committee who ensure that the members have lots of outings and activities to enjoy together such as dining out in local venues, casual barbecues on the beach, movie days, walking for pleasure, coach trips, and short holidays away together. The Friendship Group meets on the last Tuesday of the month in the corporate area of Diggers, Nelson Bay,
Outgoing president Richard Harris with vice president Noel Finch received appreciation awards.

councillor Sally Dover. Having lost her husband Garry to cancer a little over a year ago, the 78-year-old great grandmother was voted off the council she has served for 13 years at the 9 September local government elections. “I am disappointed … I love this community and I have loved serving the people of this community,” a philosophical Mrs Dover said. “It’s clear that the voters wanted some fresh new ideas on council. It’s out with the old and in with the new.” Mrs Dover said she was proud of her time on council, particularly working with council staff and the public and being part of a team that turned the council’s finances from a $13 million deficit into a $1.5 million surplus. “There have been many achievements but it’s time for others to make a positive contribution to this great town.
Richard Harris welcomed Penny Dawson as the new president.
On the Road to more Funding
AN additional $3 million will be invested in roads within Port Stephens over the next two years as part of the NSW Government’s $70 million Safer Roads Program targeting 172 safety upgrades to the state’s road network to help drive down the road toll. “Last year 254 people lost their lives in regional NSW. That’s two-thirds of our total road toll for 2016,” Mr MacDonald said. “Most of these drivers were locals and many of them died close to home. There are also thousands of people being seriously injured on our roads each year.” The five safety upgrades across Port Stephens are: $300,000 in 2017/18
for off-road cycleways at roundabouts, and widening lanes for more cycleways on a 9.5km length of MR 108 – Nelson Bay Rd from Medowie Road to approx. 1.8km east of Marsh Rd, Williamtown/ Salt Ash. $795,000 in 2017/18 for two intersections on Lemon Tree Passage Rd, Tanilba Bay. Install a one lane roundabout at the first intersection and improve sight distance and install raised concrete island at the second intersection. $1.65 million in 2017/18 to install a two lane roundabout at intersection of Raymond Terrace Rd and Seaham Rd at Nelson Plains.
$120,000 in 2018/19 to install traffic calming devices, improve road surface with increased friction and improve sight distance at intersection of Shoal Bay Road and Gowrie Avenue in Nelson Bay. $190,000 in 2018/19 to install traffic calming devices to reduce risk of crashing into roadside hazards on a 1.3km length of Foreshore Drive, Port Stephens Drive to Sandy Point Road Salamander Bay. “This important road safety program is funded through the Community Road Safety fund where all speed camera revenue is allocated,” Mr MacDonald said.
“I believe Ryan Palmer will make an excellent mayor and I can see that the makeup of the new council has a good blend of youth and experience.” Often criticised for her dedicated support of [former mayor] Bruce MacKenzie, Mrs Dover defended her actions, believing it had nothing to do with the election result. “As far as I’m concerned he [MacKenzie] got things done. I didn’t agree with everything he said or did, but he would go where others feared to tread.” Mrs Dover said she hoped to spend more time with family while continuing her work with not-for-profit and Aboriginal organisations, and supporting youth services on the Tomaree peninsula. “I thought last year was challenging. I think it’s time to sit back and reflect on what’s past. “I have had many life experiences, I have developed businesses and I have served the community to the best of my ability. “Change is always difficult but I know that God has a plan for me for the next phase of my life, and this will be revealed to me in time.”

Are things getting better?
EVERYONE knows something about domestic violence. Locals Roger and Kathy Yeo lost their daughter. Roger Yeo told News Of The Area, “I’d like to be able to tell you that things have vastly improved since Rachelle’s death in 2012; sorry, I can’t.” “There has been substantial publicity with Rosie Batty, Adam Goodes, David Morrison, Waleed Aly and Charlie Pickering, helping raise awareness, there are certainly more people talking about domestic violence but it’s not getting better,” he said. Roger believes that as neighbours and corporate entities, we have to get involved to change things now. “There are no excuses; it doesn’t matter if someone is drunk, whether they were wearing a short skirt, or perhaps that the person didn’t just leave,” he said. Roger believes that creating cultural behavioural change, is the answer, but is very difficult. He urges families to create conversations where fathers

Tomaree’s new drug action team leader
By Charlie ELIAS
A RETIRED nurse, academic and health practitioner will head the Tomaree Peninsula’s first Community Drug Action Team (CDAT). Elizabeth Schiemer, who operates the Salamander Bay Natural Health Services and is a member of the Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network (PSSPN) and secretary of Port Stephens Complementary Health Services Association Inc, knows the alcohol and drug problems facing the community, and is committed to making a difference. Since 1999, CDATs have led thousands of activities to engage at-risk youth, educate parents and the wider community through community activities and campaigns to curb alcohol-fuelled violence and drug use. The teams are supported through the Community Engagement and Action Program funded by NSW Health. Last month Ms Schiemer, a registered nurse for 50 years and clinical hypnotherapist, was elected Chair of the Port Stephens CDAT focusing on the Tomaree peninsula. “We had 14 people representing a wide crosssection of the community attend our first meeting where we were able to elect a committee,” Ms Schiemer said. “There are a couple of

After parting on compatible terms, my girlfriend and I remain friends on social media. In my feed this week, Facebook offered me to share one of their ‘you’ve been friends for three years’ collages. You know, the one that shows photos of you both and then the number of times you’ve ‘liked each other’ (1035 times). I did share it, but it has since been removed. Mr TL, Medowie Dear Mr TL, Compatible terms? What a crock. How about Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin and their ‘conscious uncoupling’. How could a man responsible for some of the coolest lyrics of all time submit to that sort of mad expression? Or call his kid Apple? Gwyneth had to be behind it. In every relationship breakup, there’s the one we naturally side with, and the one who behaves a bit like the Cable Guy. There’s the dumper and the dumpee. There’s the one who gets on with it, and the one who posts ‘we’re still friends, see, we liked each other 1035 times’. Don’t submit to your post-break-up mania, Mr TL. You want to be the quiet one. You need to play it cool. Otherwise you’ll come across as a weirdo stalker, just like you did when you shared the ‘Friends’ post. Tell me you didn’t ‘like’ her Snapchat bunny pics and then share them to your own page, post break up. That’s bad form. Or worse, tell me you didn’t use the angry emoji when she posted some girls’ night out pictures or make a comment like: ‘You look like you’re having fun. I’m just at home eating lamb shanks on my own, you know, the recipe we discovered together on our second anniversary when I took you out to an expensive restaurant, bought you flowers and opened the car door, because you’re worth it. Anyway, have a good night. Stay safe. Call if you need anything.’ Please tell me you didn’t, Mr TL. Go for a drive with a friend, play Coldplay’s The Scientist and wallow in your melancholy away from your social media feed.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.
Over two years ago I wrote to the Port Stephens Council regarding the 15 minute parking in front of Shoal Bay Pharmacy. I did not get a reply or a phone call. Now the alterations are completed and the time
limit remains, I would like to state my case again. Most of the time people park there and go to lunch or to the beach for the day. The limited parking is so handy for the aged to pop in to the chemist and obtain their needs. Could this time limit be monitored by the Council

Busy Bees Nelson Bay By Mandy ELLIS
UNFORTUNATELY, for various reasons, Busy Bees, Nelson Bay will no longer be meeting at All Saints Church hall.
From October 2017 they will be residing at the Community Hall, Norburn Avenue, Nelson Bay. Their October meeting will be held on the first Tuesday, October 3.
This will be a one-off, as the hall was already booked for the second Tuesday in October. For further enquiries, contact Kerry 4981 4214.
If we continue the existing process of providing new, low density housing spreading into our rural holdings and natural bushland, the environment we cherish so much will be destroyed. We only have to observe what is happening to the koala population and its habitat to see where we are headed. I note the great work that local volunteers are doing to try and stem the destruction of our native wildlife, such as the Koala Hospital. However, we should be addressing the cause of the problem, not just the effect, that is, human encroachment into the natural environment. A recent example is the development of a housing estate in Corlette, where the bush was levelled. This is the type
of development conservationists should be protesting about, not high rise development. The other issue confronting our local area is the lack of jobs and services. Vacant shops are evident in Nelson Bay and elsewhere. The recent closure of the Commonwealth Bank branch in Nelson Bay should serve as a warning to those groups who are “anti-development”. They were conspicuous by their silence. The new Port Stephens Council should take up the challenge and address the above problems. We wish them a very much appreciated and successful term.
Development and Conservation for the Future OPINION
Dear News Of The Area,
Congratulations to the successful candidates at the recent Port Stephens Council elections. Two important problems face the local area and need to be addressed with long-term planning. Firstly, there is a need for economic development to provide jobs, especially for our young people. Secondly, the requirement to preserve our wonderful wildlife; both flora and fauna and their habitat. Both issues are interconnected and should be addressed together. In general, we can provide for a growing population by building out into new areas or building up into existing developed areas.

East Ward Councillors Probus Gets New finalised Ambassadors
By Charlie ELIAS
THE East Ward’s three elected councillors have vowed to work for the common good of the Port Stephens community. After a week of counting and distributing preferences, Glen Dunkley, Jaimie Abbott and John Nell have emerged winners in the closely contested East Ward ballot. Incumbent Sally Dover, who also stood for mayor but lost out to Ryan Palmer, was voted out. John Morello did not seek re-election. Mr Dunkley, a former president of the Fingal Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, was elected on the strength of votes achieved by No 1
ticket holder and newly popular-elected mayor, Mr Palmer. Mr Dunkley is overseas but after hearing of the election result, he tweeted: ‘Honoured and proud to be elected as an East Ward Councillor on Port Stephens Council.’ Ms Abbott, a Liberal Party member standing as an Independent, said she was very excited to be joining a council with a mixture of experienced heads and new faces. “It was pleasing to be able to claim second spot on my own and without the need for preferences,” Ms Abbott said. “This was primarily due to the hard work of my supporters, particularly my partner Matt Bailey and my dad Jack.” Ms Abbott said she had
already sought to host a mental health forum in Port Stephens, and looked forward to progressing plans for the Fingal Bay bypass road and playground for the disabled, amongst a host of other issues. Cr Nell, who has more than 30 years experience as a councillor, will resume his seat on council, saying he is far more content working with the new councillors and mayor Palmer. “The East Ward has some pressing issues such as the building heights and car parking which I believe we should move on quickly, but I want to warn residents not to expect miracles,” Cr Nell said. “I want to thank my many supporters for putting their trust in me for another three years.”

q Mayor Ryan Palmer
First day at Council MAYOR Ryan Palmer, spent his first day in the office today after being officially declared Mayor of Port Stephens on Saturday 16 September 2017. Councillor Palmer has said it is an honour to have been elected to lead Port Stephens Council for the next three years. "It's very humbling to have received such a strong endorsement from the Port Stephens community," he said. "I ran on a platform of building relationships with key people in order to deliver the best possible outcome for the community of Port Stephens and that's what I aim to do.
"Through my roles as Business Chamber President and Convenor of Nelson Bay NOW, I've built strong partnerships with politicians of all persuasions and at all levels, business groups and community leaders. I have great faith that we can all pull together under a Council I lead for the next term." "I'll ensure we consult widely with residents to understand their concerns and deliver the things that they truly value," he added. "As a first time Councillor, I'm very much looking forward to working with my fellow Councillors and learning on the job as Mayor. "Whilst I'm not daunted
by the job, I certainly don't underestimate how big my task is, but I'm bouyed by what I know already of the excellent staff at Council", Mayor Palmer said. Counting was finalised on Sunday for the rest of the Council, with Giacamo Arrnott joining returning councillors Ken Jordan and Paul Le Motte in the West Ward, Sarah Smith completing Central Ward along with councillors Steve Tucker and Chris Doohan, and returning councillor John Nell being joined by Glen Dunkley and Jaimie Abbott in the East Ward. Mayor Palmer and the new Council will be sworn in at the first meeting of Council next Tuesday 26 September 2017.
serving in many positions. Fran will work with Probus South Pacific Ltd and the Rotary District Probus Chairman, Ray Davies at the local level, to identify and develop strategies to enhance opportunities to grow and strengthen the Probus membership base within the community. Fran Wathen, Probus Ambassador told News Of The Area, “Probus is about getting out there and participating.” She believes that the Port Stephens Probus Club’s activities like fishing,
caravanning, walking groups and social bowls connect people with their community. “Probus is for everyone, singles or couples that are semi retired or retired and want to engage with others in fun fellowship and friendships,” she said. Hikers Share Their Secret
By Mandy ELLIS
WITH so many social groups and social activities within the Port Stephens area, there really is no need to be alone; there are groups to suit almost everyone. Port Stephens Hikers wish to share their best kept secret. “Walking in the great outdoors is not only enjoyable, it also comes with fringe benefits,” Jenny
Warman told News Of The Area. “We all know that walking is good exercise but there are other bonuses too that cannot be overlooked. “These include the opportunity to make new friends while experiencing the wonder of the natural environment which we are so fortunate to call home”. The group is always amazed by the beautiful places that they visit, many in
our prized National Parks. “Imagine walking through a rainforest or witnessing the beauty of many of our native orchids or wildflowers when they are in bloom,” Jenny said. “This is just a sample of those magic moments that we all cherish when hiking in the great outdoors.” If you are reasonably fit and interested in joining the group on Wednesdays, please contact Jenny on 0438254065.
“We run many classes at TPT: pre-kindergym, kindergym and gymnastics for all ages and abilities. “There are classes for special needs children, as well as aerial silk, fine and gross motor programs and the popular holiday gymfun during the school holidays. “And what’s more we try to help in the development of coordination, confidence and skills in a fun and safe environment.” Ms Lemcke said that the TPT kindygymers and advanced kindygymers had reached outstanding milestones, and were doing wonderfully well at various carnivals.
“In the last few months, we have seen our Levels 3 and 4 gymnasts compete in the Hunter Region, some for the first time and some as young as seven. “The children also competed at the country championships for the first time ever, competing against Clubs from as far afield as Wollongong, Orange, Bathurst, Dubbo, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth, Taree, and at least 10 other regions. “They also recently competed and performed to their best ability at the Hunter championships.” Anyone interested in gymnastics with a difference can contact Tanya on 0418643188.

Instructor Tanya Lemcke has been operating the business in Port Stephens since 1991 with an emphasis on teaching children life and health skills. “We are very proud of all our children, competitive or not,” Ms Lemcke said. “I think they are all achieving and learning life lessons, as well as sport and health skills.

High Hopes for New Era
THE election of Ryan Palmer and other fresh faces to Port Stephens Council could be a real game-changer according to Tomaree Ratepayers and Residents Association’s (TRRA) president Geoff Washington. “The new mayor, Ryan Palmer, could lead Port Stephens Council into a new era of cooperative and constructive governance,” he said. Early reactions are encouraging, with even the re-elected councillors appearing willing to
rally behind Ryan’s new leadership. “All the newcomers and Cr Paul Le Mottee have expressed support for the reintroduction of webcasting, and changes to Council processes to allow for greater community consultation also seem likely,” Mr Washington said. “We look forward to a much greater opportunity for residents and ratepayers to have their say and influence the planning and other outcomes.” “Webcasting of meetings alone will dramatically increase accessibility

and accountability,” he said. TRRA also hopes for a rational ‘big-picture’ approach to finances and planning. “The new Council should take more seriously advice from its own staff and State agencies, and should also take a stronger approach to compliance and enforcement,” Geoff Washington said. “We hope that the long years of ‘playing favourites’ and projects queue-jumping are over.”

at the Bay
By Charlie ELIAS
NELSON Bay is the holiday capital of Port Stephens, with an array of tourist attractions and destinations the whole family can enjoy. There is plenty of accommodation, from B&Bs to holiday parks and five star hotels and resorts, cafes, restaurants and gift stores lined across the CBD. In addition to the bustling business district is the d’Alboras Marina, which offers 200 wet berths, and access to dockmaster assistance and fuel. The marina also features a great selection of retail outlets offering gifts, clothing, jewellery and accessories in addition to the foreshore eateries. Nelson Bay is located approximately 60km north of Newcastle and
200km from Sydney – an easy two-and-a-half hours drive for day-trippers. Locals have the best of both worlds by being able to live, work and shop in what was once an old fishing town that has maintained its seaside village atmosphere. The Bay features a number of waterways, comprising breathtaking dive spots to excellent fishing areas and some of the best surf beaches on the east coast. There are also safe, calm waterways ideal for families and small children. There are a variety of shops ranging from the quirky to the essential and two years ago a giant Woolworths supermarket opened its doors to shoppers. For many years residents have complained about the distinct separation between the CBD and marina – this issue is being addressed with Port Stephens expected to begin work on a new one-way
link road between Magnus Street and Victoria Parade. This is expected to provide easy pedestrian access from the foreshore to the business district, in addition to solving some of the heavy traffic congestion problems during the peak summer tourism periods. The Bay is wellknown for its koalas and bottlenose dolphins that live inside the port. Whale season is also a major attraction during the months of June-July and again in OctoberNovember. Some of the Port’s biggest festivals are centred in and around Nelson Bay, including the Bluewater Country Music Festival on the long weekend in June; the seafood festival in August and the Tastes at the Bay on the first weekend every November.

THE weather turned on a much finer show for this year’s Longriders Christian Motorcycle Club charity bike show and family fun day. This special event, held annually in September at Tomago, was once again a huge success. Crowds flowed through the gates, with plenty of families joining in for the family-friendly event. The jumping castles, pony rides and petting zoo were kept busy and the food tent served people all day. There was over 150 bikes with around 20 show cars.

Sienna’s find a new home in the Bay
By Charlie ELIAS
AFTER more than a decade of serving up a little piece of Italy to Port Stephens diners, the Lauricella family has settled on its final and permanent location. Mum Anna Lauricella and her three children – son Andrea, a qualified chef, plus daughters Marcella Hill and Angelica – have opened a revitalised version of Sienna’s in Magnus Street [at the site of the former Depz Restaurant]. “My parents came to Australia in the 1960s, settled in Horsham (Victoria) and opened a pizza shop,” the family matriarch said. “We moved to Port Stephens in 2000 and decided to open Sienna’s seven years ago, first at the Bay Breeze, and now in Magnus Street. “We have only been in this
location a month and we love it. This is our final stop.” The restaurant and café is open seven days for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Chef Andrea said that fresh ingredients were a feature of the Mediterraneanbased menu where homemade pasta ruled. “The veal boscaiola is a specialty with diners often coming from miles away to get a taste,” he said. “Other popular meals include the pasta marinara with crab, mussels, calamari and prawns; Sienna’s chicken made in a creamy white wine sauce; Arancini (rice balls) and of course the pizzas.” When asked what made them so special, sister Marcella is quick to respond:
“Because they are made with love and passion the Italian way”. The coffee comes from Victoria and a large portion of the cakes are home made. The family originates from seven little islands off the southern coast of Sicily called the Aeolian Islands, where the fine food is only matched by the hospitality and good old fashioned service. It’s Anna’s job to keep clients entertained with her happy disposition and service with a smile. Diners are welcome to eat indoors or out and the restaurant will do takeaways. For bookings telephone 4984 4900.
