TOMAREE High School year 12 students showcased their professional catering skills at the launch of ‘Tastes At The Bay’ in Nelson Bay recently. The students created Hors d’oeuvre, and delectable desserts. From quiches and canapés to miniature lemon meringue pies and chocolate brownies, every morsel was tantalising on the tastebuds. The business community turned out and enjoyed the wonderful repast which was the official launch of ‘Tastes At The Bay’. Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “It is wonderful to see school students getting opportunities to contribute to community events like this, and their efforts were very much appreciated by everyone present.” Qualified Chef and Head Teacher of Hospitality at Tomaree High School Karen Shaw, told News Of The Area, “I’d like to say that this is the last time that I will be donning my Chef’s jacket for Tomaree High School.” She believes that the students have every reason to be pleased with their efforts which took all day to create. “I am really proud of the effort that the students have put in and the quality of the food that they have served tonight,” she said. The professionalism of the Tomaree High School students was truly evident in their food and service.

decisions for all local Government areas through zoning and development controls. The DCP supports the Port Stephens’ Local Environmental Plan 2013, providing detailed planning and design guidelines for how land can be used. Jeffrey Bretag, Council’s Strategic Planning Coordinator, says feedback is now being sought on how these changes may affect the

community. “When the DCP was adopted in 2015, there was a commitment to continually review the plan and this amendment addresses an array of matters that have arisen since its adoption,” Mr Bretag said. “We believe the amendments will mostly affect those who regularly submit development applications, but there are several changes we really

X-Ray Services a Reality

By Marian SAMPSON

TOMAREE residents’ wait is nearly over with X-Ray services to commence at the community hospital in February 2018. Catherine Cusack MLC said, “The community has been calling for these services for years and the Berejiklian Government is delighted to be in a position to deliver this significant improvement to local patient services.” She believes that this is

the direct result of record economic growth and infrastructure spending, however she also recognised that the additional services had been driven by the community. “A Contract will be awarded to a private sector provider in the region of $200,000 per annum plus additional fees, for call outs with urgent cases being seen within a one hour time frame,” she said. The reality of the

community action that it has taken to gain these services has not been lost on the Labour or Liberal candidates. Jeanette Antrum OAM and community campaigner for better services told News Of The Area, “The announcement that X-Ray services on site at the Tomaree Community Hospital will be a reality after February 2018, was welcomed by all the community groups who have been lobbying for this for such a long time.” “Those groups can

Scott McGuire, aged 29, was last seen about 4pm on Sunday (19 November 2017), when he went snorkelling with a friend off Birubi Point at Anna Bay. When he failed to return to shore or return home, police were notified. A search of waters between Birubi Point and Boat Harbour on Monday failed to locate Mr McGuire. Police and his family have concerns for his welfare and are appealing for anyone with information to contact Police. In particular, any fishermen who were at Birubi Point on Sunday afternoon are urged to come forward. Mr McGuire is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm185cm tall, of a slim build, and with shaved brown hair. He was last seen wearing red board shorts, black flippers, black goggles with clear snorkel and carrying a small mesh bag. Angel In The Sky

By Marian SAMPSON

LOCALS to the Bay might know Steve Ward as the guy with the cool old truck in the Australia Day Parade, or even the guy that used to fix their computers. But there’s more to Steve Ward than meets the eye, including a great sense of humanity and humour, a pilot’s’ licence and over thirty years of community volunteering in the pilot’s seat. Steve Ward told News Of The Area, “I initially got involved flying with Outback Patrol to keep my hours up, but of greater importance

is what we do for isolated communities.” As a pilot, Steve does good in the bush. As a volunteer, for both Angel flight, and Outback Patrol (OBP) Steve spends hours in the air getting sick people to care, and bringing unique experiences to isolated communities. Angel Flight Australia is a charity which coordinates non-emergency flights to assist country people to access specialist medical treatment that would otherwise be unavailable to them, due to the vast distances - cost of travel. Steve and other pilots

now switch their focus to continuing lobbying for a helipad, and more resources for the provision of satisfactory palliative care services.” She believes that a helipad on site will get rid of the need for critically ill patients to be first ferried by ambulance to the nearest oval to board the waiting helicopter, saving precious minutes in lifethreatening emergencies. This Thursday emergency services were called to assist the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service land opposite Regis at Salamander Bay to airlift a patient. Jeanette also expressed her congratulations to the members of the Local Health committee and the wonderful ladies in the Hospital Auxiliary who raise thousands of dollars for equipment for the Tomaree Hospital. She hopes that the community will keep up the pressure for improved services. Port Stephens Councillor Jaimie Abbott said, “During my council election campaign I did a lot of door knocking, and this was one of the top

issues raised with me by local residents; I am proud the Berejiklian Government has been able to deliver this service which is long overdue for this community. “This will save a two-hour return trip to the John Hunter Hospital for locals and I am really proud to been a part of this announcement,” she said. Port Stephens Member Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “The X-ray service is a win for the community, but there is much more to do. “Speaking to people across the peninsular, it’s clear that there is a need for many more health services including dialysis support, chemotherapy treatment, ultrasound imaging, rehabilitation and maternal health at Tomaree Hospital. “Once operational, I believe that the X-ray service will be well-utilised. “Upgrades to the Hospital are important, but there is also a need to improve access to community health services across Port Stephens, including mental health support, drug and alcohol services and access to specialists,” she said. The X-ray services will save many patient hours in transit for services. q Steve in the cockpit.

volunteer their time and plane owners allow their planes to be used while Angel Flight raises money for the fuel, via corporate sponsorships and traditional fundraising methods. Outback Patrol meets some of the human, emotional, and spiritual needs of families who live in the most remote and isolated townships in inland Australia. Typically Steve’s OBP trips are up to nine days where he takes a clown, puppets, along with music or drama groups to perform 15 to 20 sessions at remote Schools. Volunteers with OBP meet all their own costs.

EVENTS AFTER 10 years at Gateway Church and 37 years of continuous operation, the Anna Bay Community Market is gaining a fresh new look and home at Baylife Church. The first market at Baylife Church will be on Saturday 2 December, and then on the first Saturday of every month from 8.30am to 2pm. The move comes with some fresh changes including a greater focus on ready-to-eat fresh food & produce, live music, community participation and activities for young children including a

jumping castle. The only thing better than strolling around a market on a beautiful Port Stephens morning is enjoying fresh food. The new fresh market will be focused on having a variety of different food offerings to meet different tastes. Community participation will be a big focus of the market. The regular feature of a BBQ will continue, but with different community groups operating it every month and there will be a community showcase in February. “It is our mission to reach

and positively influence our community. We see the market as an opportunity to give back to the wider Port Stephens community, and are excited to be the new custodians of this Anna Bay Institution,” said Senior Pastor Greg McEwen “At Baylife Church we love live music and we will have Carols at the first market in December and then showcase local talent in coming months.” “We are planning to have themes for every market so there will always be something new to explore.”

Simone Aurino

By Marian SAMPSON

WE’D like to introduce Simone Aurino, one of the first responders and long term carers from Port Stephens Koalas. After a childhood spent exploring Royal National Park Simone has a passion for the natural environment. A few years ago she saw an advertisement, seeking volunteers for Port Stephens Koalas and realised that the local carers lived very close to where she lived, so she applied. These days it’s not often that Simone doesn’t have a koala at her home in desperate need of care. Once Simone started caring for koalas she was hooked. Simone Aurino told News Of The Area, “It isn’t easy, sometimes we work with an animal for months only to have to euthanize it.” She believes that the way Port Stephens Koalas work as a team to determine the best care for each koala is one of the reasons they have so

The volunteers all train on the job and it never ceases to amaze me as to how much you can learn from other interested and dedicated people. “We all have different experiences, which creates a collective experience.” Simone’s family is involved in her koala caring with her husband and children having helped at rescues. It’s hard to do especially when not all the koalas

survive, but it has become my passion,” she said. The new Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary will assist Simone and the crew at Port Stephens Koalas create better outcomes for sick and injured Port Stephens Koalas. Everyone in and around Port Stephens can help our koalas. If you see a koala in need call the Koala Rescue Number 0418 628 483 24 hours a day and you might just end up speaking to Simone.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

I am an only child and therefore responsible for my parents as they age and eventually pass away. My father wants to be cremated. My mother wants to be buried. I think it would be nice for them to stay together in the one spot. Any advice? Mr NB, Salt Ash Dear Mr NB, Well, this is a macabre little Jasminda problem. As if there isn’t enough sombre news at the moment with rare dugongs being caught in commercial fishing nets, Trump on the back foot after trying to put elephant trophy imports back on the agenda, and various other calamities. And now your email. As much as I don’t want to think about death while eating my afternoon tea, Mr NB, can I use this opportunity to say that the best way to dispose of the dead is in a pod. Now, I don’t know if these are legal in Australia yet, but I certainly hope, when my time comes, that my family will arrange a burial pod which will turn me into a lovely tree. Can you imagine how much more aesthetically pleasing graveyards would be if people were put into a pod, complete with seeds, that then sprouted to life (with a bit of help from the organic matter). Grey gravestone or green tree? Spooky graveyards or lush forests? The choice is pretty easy. Now, with your particular problem, if dad goes first, you can just pop him on the shelf in a little pot and then place him in the ground with your mother. If your mother is the first to go, you can always sprinkle your father’s ashes over her burial place. I really must go now, because my husband is looking over my shoulder, wondering why I am researching burial methods, when I am supposed to be helping him with the gardening.

Carpe diem, Jasminda

Quilt and Literature Supporting our troops Award Winners By Mandy ELLIS

By Geoff WALKER

“DON’T SIT DOWN!” This was the advice given to Anna Bay’s Jann Sturdy by the announcer at the 2017 quilting show. You see, Jann more or less scooped the pool with her entries, returning to the table time and again to pick up more prizes. Others to do well included Lynley Keers, Wendy Nutt, and Maureen Grealy. Some 58 quilts were entered with a further 29 on display over the weekend of November 18th and 19th at Club Lemon Tree. Wendy Nutt has also

recently won a commendation in the Australian Modern Quilt Show. The Quilt Show was also chosen as a venue to announce the winners of the Port Stephens Literature Awards 2017. The $1100 in prize money is funded by PSSC, Club Lemon Tree and entry fees. It has been running for some 15 years under the umbrella of TACE (Tilligerry Adult and Community Education), a Not-for-Profit Group connected to Port Stephens Shire Council. This year drew entries from every Australian State

with local writers from Medowie, Tea Gardens and Tanilba Bay featuring in the top 21 Awards. First prize ($500) went to Sophia Field from Victoria with her story ‘Chocolate Milk’. The same story also won the $50 Judges’ Award. Second prize ($300) was taken out by Tasmanian Freya Cox with her entry ‘A Colour of Loss.’ The News Of The Area Award ($150) was for ‘A Child Named Warrior written by Rob Viskovich from Lane Cove in Sydney.

The blank cards and envelopes are sent to where our serving men and women are, and as well as free postage, are made available free of charge. Irene, told News Of The Area, “You do not need to be a card maker to help, there is plenty of

Most of the materials will be supplied, however, donations such as, card, paper, ribbon, decorating stamps etc, and not forgetting the equipment needed to create the cards, scissors, rulers, etc, regardless of quantity, will always be welcome.

Irene is hoping to establish interest in both the creating of the cards, and local business support/sponsorship. Extended Testing

The Department of Defence has been working to finalise its Human Health Risk Assessment for the RAAF Base Williamtown environmental investigation in consultation with the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and the Williamtown Expert Panel. THE Australian Government will extend blood testing, water connections and participation in the epidemiological study to newly defined management areas previously not part of the Investigation Area at Williamtown. The Department of Defence has been working to finalise its Human Health Risk Assessment for the RAAF Base Williamtown environmental investigation in consultation with the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and the Williamtown Expert Panel. The information provided through the study has informed the Expert Panel and NSW EPA’s consideration of the health advisories regarding PFAS in the area around RAAF Base Williamtown. Earlier this week, the

NSW EPA announced new health advisories, consisting of the creation of management areas better reflecting the extent and concentration of PFAS identified in the Defence investigation. These management areas extend beyond the boundaries of the Investigation Area established by the NSW EPA in 2015 and are consistent with the findings from the Defence investigation. Defence intends to continue its collaboration with the Hunter Water Corporation to connect residents to the town water network. This will now be extended to residents within the newly defined management areas where it is feasible to do so. Defence will be engaging with these community members to assess their circumstances and establish an appropriate

response which minimises their exposure. The Commonwealth Department of Health has also announced it will be extending its Voluntary Blood Testing Program, the associated epidemiological study and mental health support services to those residents who were not previously in the Investigation Area. A community information session will be held at the Murrook Cultural Centre on 5 December 2017, and two community walk-in sessions will be held to present the finding of the final Environmental Site Assessment and Human Health Risk Assessment reports for Williamtown. These reports will be released prior to the walkin sessions.

Coming Up Trumps By Marian SAMPSON

TOMAREE Bridge Club recently hosted a Bridge Congress for approximately 150 people from Bridge Clubs throughout Port Stephens, the Hunter and Central Coast. The game of Bridge is mentally stimulating and fun, using strategy and teamsmanship. Members and visitors competed in a Swiss Pairs competition on the Saturday followed by a teams event on the Sunday. Over the two days the players competed fiercely but still found time to socialise

between rounds and enjoy the abundance of home cooking supplied by the host Club. Nelson Bay’s local players had some success in the Congress with the Pairs event being won by Trish Grigson and Kevin Farrell. The best local pair were Bev Cleary and Sandra Dean who finished eleventh with Lynette Fitzhenry and Kerry Wright finishing fourteenth. Wishing Tree Appeal

By Mandy ELLIS

q Rebecca Martin, Santa, Mikayla Martin.

DURING the past 29 years, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal has received more than eight million gifts, to share amongst those less fortunate. “This is a very exciting year for the Wishing Tree Appeal with new options for donating,” Rebecca Martin, Kmart Salamander Bay told News Of The Area. Rebecca is referring to the option this year to take a bauble tag off the Wishing Tree and make a donation. The bauble tags have a set amount and option for the recipient to make a personal selection. Options being $5, $7 or $10. First is for a young person to choose a book for studying, $7 would buy a basketball and the $10 would give a Senior Citizen the opportunity to purchase toiletries of their preference. Mikayla Martin, said, “The continued support from our local community is so impressive and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who is able to

participate.” Mikayla also advised that there is a gap in donations for teenage boys and urges the community to keep them in mind, “Teenage boys like toiletries too.” she said. “We would like to thank the Anna Bay Ropeburners for all their support. We also greatly appreciate the continuing support from the Salvation Army and the community for this worthy cause,” David Wright, Deputy Manager Kmart Salamander Bay, said. With more than 2.9 million Australians living in poverty, all Australian’s are encouraged to do what they can. The Salvation Army and Kmart work very closely together in supporting our community. Donations made in Port Stephens, stay in Port Stephens and any leftover gifts are given to the Salvation Army to distribute during the year to families in need to celebrate Birthdays. Supporting the Wishing Tree, means many more locals can have something at Christmas.

Yes!

By Heather SHARP

WEDNESDAY, 15 November 2017 marked a day in Australia that is sure to become one of historical

importance. The Australian Bureau of Statistics released results of the non-binding postal survey undertaken on behalf of the Federal Government. The question posed was ‘Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?’ It was answered by

newsofthearea.com.au 79.5% of citizens. In evidence that Australia has undergone a significant cultural shift in the past couple of decades, 61.6% (7 817 247) responded Yes and 38.4% (4 873 987) replied No. Of those who returned their postal votes in

the Federal electorate of Paterson, which encompasses the Port Stephens Local Government Area, 65.5% (60 915) voted to change the Law, higher than the national average. Ms Meryl Swanson MP, Member for Paterson told News Of The Area, “I’d like to reiterate that I have always been a firm Yes voter.” “Allowing people in our LGBTQI community equal rights will in no way threaten heterosexual marriage.” “Life’s a team sport and we are stronger and happier when we are united.” “It’s great that Australians are sending this message of acceptance and telling our young people: It’s OK to be who you are.” In acknowledging that not all constituents voted Yes, and that for some this will be a difficult result to accepts, Ms Swanson said, “To those constituents of mine who voted No, I would like to offer the assurance that they will be entitled to religious protections under Dean Smith’s private member’s bill,

which received unanimous, multi-party support.” “It is the best representation of our nation’s intentions.” Local resident, Ms Francess Zahra was overcome with emotion about the historical result. Ms Zahra, who lives in Medowie, has been impacted by the issue, like so many others, through family connections. She told News Of The Area, “When the Yes vote came through, I cried happy tears.” “Not really just for my son and his partner, but for my granddaughter Hazel.” “My son has stood bravely against the criticisms and also embraced the positives, but Hazel is a baby and deserves to be treated as any other child living in a happy family with parents who adore her, which they do.” Local Councillor Mr Giacomo Arnott, who introduced a (failed) motion to support same-sex marriage at a recent Port Stephens Council meeting

Roos On Course for Success

said, “Parliament should have got on with its job from day one and changed the marriage act to reflect what we already knew , that the majority of Australians support same-sex marriage.” “Instead, the Liberal Government wasted $122m of public funds to conduct an opinion poll.” “I hope that the Marriage Act will be changed swiftly and without obstruction in the Parliament.” “The Paterson electorate’s strong ‘yes’ vote vindicates my arguments around why I put that motion to Council.” “All levels of Government exist to provide leadership on issues, and failing to pass that motion was a failure from Council to show leadership in our community; who, as it clearly turns out, support that very issue.” State Member for Port Stephens, Ms Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “Our region is home to many loving gay couples who will soon enjoy the same right to marry.”

The quest to perfect the balance between man and beast at Nelson Bay Golf Club. Everyone (human and kangaroos) is a winner with this program.

WILDLIFE and golf courses make an interesting combination. Animals can make for welcome entertainment but can also wreak havoc on greens. The quest to perfect the balance between man and beast at Nelson Bay Golf Club has given rise to what researchers hope will be a world-class management program, plus a uniquely Australian tourism opportunity. “Everyone – human and roo – is a winner with this program,” said Meryl Swanson, MP for Paterson. “The kangaroos receive expert medical care; their population is controlled in a humane fashion; our researchers are adding to the body of information around this iconic Australian animal; and the club has created a unique opportunity for tourism and revenue.” Ms Swanson visited the club on Monday to present a $5000 Stronger Communities Grant, which will be spent towards expanding the club’s Kangaroo Encounters Tours initiative. People who take part in one of ‘Kangaroo Phil’ Murray’s Kangaroo Encounters Tours can walk or ride in a golf cart around the club’s manicured course,

ringed by native bushland, and interact with the native wildlife. The Eastern Grey Kangaroos of Nelson Bay Golf Club are one of the moststudied populations in the country, according to Mr Murray. Mr Murray’s research indicates that, since the 1980s and the suburbanisation of the Bay the kangaroo population on the course has fluctuated wildly, at times all but absent due to dog attacks, dam drownings, vehicular accidents, disease and even encounters with golf balls. Mr Murray collaborated with the University of Sydney to support research into the roos while simultaneously

implementing a management program that addressed population control. The roos are now subject to regular counts, are tagged for identification, receive medical care when required, and are given birth control as required to help the population remain at around 120 animals, not including the young in pouches. Tours are conducted most

evenings. The cost is $15 per person, and children under 16 are free. A guide-driven six-seater golf cart is available for groups of five or less for an additional $20 rental fee. All money collected is used to fund ongoing kangaroo research. For more information, ring ‘Kangaroo Phil’ on 0438 615 136.
