By Rachael VAUGHAN MATES and family members of Jack Murphy joined together to create something special in his memory last week. His memory was honoured with shared stories and a few laughs. Shane Kenno from Up & Up and Jamie Brewster from The Drop In at Tanilba Bay joined with a number of Jack’s friends and family to paint a piece of art in his memory on one of the pipe walls at Medowie Skate Park.

Jack Murphy was a bright and happy 14 year old, already making a name for himself in the professional scooter world at a young age. He was a resident of Medowie, and a Year 9 student attending San Clemente High School. At just 14, Jack passed away from a heart defect on 2 June this year. Jack was described as being larger than life, and someone who would do anything for his family and his mates.

THE disabled access ramp into the water at Little Beach is undergoing an upgrade which will see a wheelchair friendly and safe fishing platform added for anglers. The wharf will feature modified railings which are designed specifically for people who are in a wheelchair so they can fish from the platform. The disabled access to the water will not be hampered by the new platform. Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “The project is being funded by the NSW Government.” The work is being completed through funding from the Recreational Fishing Trust and will represent an investment in Port Stephens of over $98,000. The Recreational Fishing Trust is the NSW Fishing Licence Fees being reinvested into infrastructure and improving fishing in New South Wales by the

Department of Primary Industries. Projects to be funded through the Trust include accessible fishing, fish restocking, education programs, schools education, increasing participation in recreational fishing. Also funded are fishing platforms, artificial reefs, cleaning facilities, safety infrastructure and research on fish and recreational fishing. Fishing licences also

fund the enforcement of fishing rules in New South Wales waters. Under a separate program DPI also funds foreshore replanting and rehabilitation projects. Upon opening the accessible fishing ramp will see those less able to access a great fishing spot where there are regular catches of leatherjacket, bream, snapper, and flathead.

Seniors Living Proposal For Colonial Ridge Site

A DA to re-develop the Colonial Ridge Resort at Fleet Street, Salamander Bay, has been lodged replacing cottages with multi-storey buildings. At a recent meeting of concerned residents, the proposal was described by Colin Howard, a spokesperson for the Salamander Bay Community Group, “as being totally out of character with this residential area.” The community accepts medium-rise developments in the Nelson Bay precinct, however the group believes that the planning proposal, will set a precedent for multi-apartment complexes all over Port Stephens. The planned multi-

storey building fronting Fleet Street exceeds the 9m height limit of the R2 zoned area. Queensland registered Mustard-seed Properties plans to provide 35 “Seniors Living” dwellings together with two levels of underground parking. Local residents are concerned that planned excavations may require continuous pumping of groundwater into the stormwater system and out into Port Stephens waterways, due to the ground water sitting at a level of 1.5 metres below the surface and depth of excavations.. They believe this may contravene aspects of State Government regulations. The amount of

stormwater impacting surrounding properties and the adjacent creek in Stoney Ridge Reserve’s rainforest of Cabbage Tree palms, which runs onto Wanda Beach, also concern residents. Other issues include the visual impact of overdevelopment, and loss of privacy in neighbouring homes and gardens, destruction of high ecological-value bushland, formerly within the Reserve, and impacts on threatened species such as koalas, Powerful Owl and orchid Corybas Dowlingii in the fire adjacent break. Residents had sought an extension with Council for public submissions, which was not granted. Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “Council

is following a process set by NSW Planning. “While there is a nominated period to respond, council will accept any feedback up until there is a determination on the DA.” He believes that the residents in surrounding properties are well aware of the proposed development given the previously withdrawn DA for the site. The DA can be viewed at Tomaree Library or online using the Council DA tracker and application number 433. Council has allowed 14 days for the public to complete and send submissions on this proposal, with the formal deadline of 5pm 27 July.

There was concern expressed over a potential risk of a sewer leak into the Bay which would impact water quality and Oyster Farmers. Councillor John Nell told News Of The Area, “There are plans in place to fence the access to the beach and have dedicated access to prevent further erosion. Cr Nell believes that growing plants with deeper roots and using dedicated accesses will minimise further damage to the beach. “The space needs simple management with volunteers and council working together to maintain it for future generations,“ he said. While the community is keen to see urgency around remediating the site, Les Sneddon of Port Stephens Council said, “We are dealing with human damage and it is a low priority due

to Council process, we need to go through the process and prioritise issues.” Cr Nell also suggested that accessing the Council’s Environmental Projects Fund may be a way forward to seeing the site being remediated with community groups and Council working together on remediation. Locals present pointed out the success at Sunset Beach where locals had virtually adopted the beach seeing positive outcomes for the foreshore. Ina George, President of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay is also keen to see the Reserve improved seeing a need for improved facilities. The Club has applied for a Grant funding for the Reserve and is awaiting the outcome of the application. Agility Trial for Dog Club THE weekend of 28 and 29 July will see a variety of well trained dogs from across the region collect in Boomerang Park Raymond Terrace for the annual Port Stephens Dog Sports Club Agility Trial. Christine Slowiaczek from the Club said the dogs will be put through a challenging circuit of jumps, ramps, and tunnels, all competing for the championship ribbons.

“While the dogs and their owners are taking part in these energetic competitions spectators can sit back and be amazed,” she said. Hot food and good coffee are available on both days, but it would be a good idea to bring your own folding chair. Ms Slowiaczek told News Of THe Area, “The dogs competing on each day have entered for these events and it is not advised

to bring your family dog as there will be a lot of dogs on the field and all dogs need to be on leash.” Raymond Terrace Dog Park is at the Northern end of Boomerang Park near the intersection of Kangaroo and Freeth Streets. Parking is very limited but it is a lovely walk across Boomerang Park from Irrawang Street.

2018 Dolphin and Turtle Census By Marian SAMPSON

PORT Stephens annual dolphin census comes of age with this year marking the 18th annual census of the population. In 2017 73 locals participated in the census. The event will be held on Sunday 29 July between 11-12 noon. Everyone is welcome to participate, either from the shore or on the water. In 2017 the event was held in early June with a total of 67 dolphins spotted by the volunteers who gave up their time to document the activity of dolphins in Port Stephens. Pods of well known dolphins such as Smoky and his alliance of three male dolphins were spotted near Wayne’s Bar with around 14 other dolphins, including another alliance of three males known as Ben’s alliance. 20 dolphins were also spotted near Yacaaba Headland and another eight off Kingsley Beach during last year’s census.

Farewell to War Bride, Min

She was a Foundation member of the Probus Club and served as its Treasurer for 18 years, was the first cook at the local Meals on Wheels, and served office for the Tomago Ladies Bowling Club. She is also remembered as being the cook at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club for many years. Min’s grandson, Mr Tony Pereira told News Of The Area, “Nanna was a very strong woman with a dry and sharp wit.” “When confronted with the need for major surgery at the ripe age of 99, she ‘told’ the surgeon to find an anaesthetist who would assist; nothing would stand between her and that letter from the Queen.” Indeed Min did receive her letter from the Queen

RAYMOND Terrace local and volunteer of many organisations, Mrs Francis “Min” Thomas was farewelled last week. At 105 years of age, Mrs Thomas lived an interesting life. She was born 11 March, 1913 in Wallasey, England and passed away on 6 July, 2018 in Raymond Terrace, Australia. Having been born in 1913, Min was old enough to have remembered the end of World War I, live through the Great Depression, experienced World War II as an adult, and been witness to many other world events in her lifetime. Min’s list of volunteer activities is commendable.

MP.” Min lived independently at home, something she was proud of, and it was also the first and only home Min and her husband had lived in since arriving in Australia in 1952. Min had married Cecil Thomas in 1942 during the

height of World War II. The late Mr Thomas served in Africa as part of the British Armed Forces. Min is survived by her loving family: two children, two grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Vale Min.

APPLICATIONS have opened for funding to support the 2019 NSW Seniors Festival, formerly NSW Seniors Week. The annual event will run from Wednesday 13 February to Sunday 24 February 2019 and include a host of State-wide and local activities. Local groups can apply for Grants of between $1,000 to $5,000 for local events, or up to $10,000 to support regional level events. Acting Shadow Minister for Ageing Kate Washington has encouraged groups in the Hunter to apply for funding to put on local events. Senior Festival 2018 events across the Hunter included Yoga in the Park, croquet come-and-try days, film screenings, information sessions on legal issues for seniors, and social morning teas. The annual Seniors Festival also includes a free Gala Concert, with tickets

released closer to the event. Ms Washington said, “Whether it is local morning teas, or the State-wide Gala Concert, the annual Seniors Festival is a celebration of life for older Australians.” “The Seniors Festival also includes important information sessions and workshops for older people on legal issues, healthy living, staying safe in your home,” she said. Medowie Probus turns 15 MEDOWIE Probus members celebrated the Club’s fifteenth birthday last week with a very enjoyable lunch at Nelson Bay Golf Club. The lunch was attended by 49 members. Current Club President, Paul Murrant congratulated the members on this achievement with a special compliment to the few Foundation members who were there. Since its formation in 2003 the Club membership has varied and at one stage exceeded 100. It currently stands at 63. ONE of the most important issues facing men, women, young people, and their families in Australia is that of suicide and awareness on ways to help someone who may be in need. Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre will host a free seminar ‘LivingWorks safeTALK suicide prevention presentation’ that promises to be an important event that all should attend if able.

LivingWorks safeTALK is a half day presentation to increase suicide awareness. The program alerts community members to signs that a person may be considering suicide. It acknowledges that while most people at risk of suicide signal their distress and invite help, these intervention opportunities are often overlooked. safeTALK participants learn to recognise when someone may have thoughts of suicide, and to respond in ways that link them with further suicide intervention

The team wants to build a strong Saturday crew to cater to Medowie residents even more, combined with their current Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm opening hours. Karuah RSL Bowls Club By Trevor DAVIES SPORTSPEOPLE often look different after a game than they do at the start. The picture below shows two very gallant sportsmen, albeit a bit ragged and in failing light, but know this, they had just battled out an epic 4 hour game that was only decided right at the very death! Every end was close all the way. Quality skills and sportsmanship all the way. Changes in the lead, elation, disappointment and comebacks right to the very end. The Karuah Men’s Major Singles Championship had it all and in the end Tom Mulley won out in the clubs annual Champaign event beating the clubs most consistent player this year Dennis Ashbridge. In a game format where first to reach 31 shots wins, every end saw lead changes. Dennis wrested the early and mid game ascendency to lead 25 / 14. Then the unthinkable happened and Tom took 14 unanswered shots by simply brilliant bowling to take the lead 28 / 25! Dennis fought back first to 28 all, then to take the lead back at 29 / 28. Tom rallied to get first to 30 / 29, then, on the last end, picked up the shot to take the position of reigning Club men’s singles champion for 2018, winning 31 / 29. It was a

I referred earlier to Dennis as one of the Club’s most consistent players. Do I need a ‘For Sale’ sign? R Matthews

I AM usually asked this question when home sellers don’t want their neighbours to know that they have listed their property for sale. Although everyone is entitled to make this decision for themselves & are also entitled to their privacy, I would say that in most cases the answer is “yes you do.” Most buyer enquiry initiates from online real estate search sites but why not embrace every chance you can to advertise your property. Tourists, Sunday drivers, neighbours & locals are all good candidates for making enquiry from a for sale sign. If not for them, it may be for family & friends who wish to move to the area. Location can make the answer a little bit more flexible, for example if you live down the end of a no through road, where people rarely drive. But for the most part, if your reasoning for not having one is indeed that you don’t wish your neighbours to find out, then I can tell you now that unless they don’t have the internet and have no friends & family, then they are going to find out regardless. 30 years of fundraising

A WELL known charity group in Nelson Bay, the Busy B’s will be celebrating 30 years in the fundraising business, on Tuesday 14th August 2018. An amazing feat. No less than 40 members meet every second Tuesday at the Community Hall is Norburn Avenue. President of the group Kerry Sprigg said there is always a genuine feeling of generosity and friendship amongst the members who are all willing to donate jams, pickles, good quality second-hand goods and clothing, as well as craft. “The ladies happily shop,

showing off the bargains they have purchased that were all donated,” Ms Sprigg said. “The raffles are always popular, the prizes again donated by the ladies. Everyone brings along a plate of food to contribute to lunch, which is always tasty,and a social affair.” The Patron of Busy B’s is Margaret McNaughton, who is known to many locals. Margaret sings and plays the piano, accordion encouraging everyone to join in. “Margaret will be our birthday entertainer. It is the custom to give her, on this annual

visit, teddies for the children and food and toiletries to their parents, which she hands out at Ronald McDonald House, at the John Hunter Hospital,” Ms Sprigg told News Of The Area. Donations of monies raised are given to Ronald McDonald House and various schools in and around the area that cater for Special Needs children, as well as the makers of specific furniture for these schools. News Of The Area are sure that there will be many more ‘years of fund-raising’ from these wonderful ladies. Happy birthday to one and all.

ACCESS to fast broadband is just around the corner as construction of the NBN access network begins in parts of Medowie and Williamtown. NBN Co is commencing construction work to help ensure that more than 3500 homes and businesses in parts of Medowie and Williamtown can connect to a service delivered over the NBN access network by around April 2019. The rollout of the NBN access network continues to gather momentum in the Port Stephens Council area with nearly 21,500 residents and businesses already able to connect to a plan over the NBN access network.

Head of NBN Local NSW, Amber Dornbusch said, “The construction of Australia’s new broadband access network in Medowie and Williamtown is exciting news for the community as the benefits of access to fast broadband is only a few months away.” “Over the coming months, you can expect to see NBN Co contractors performing construction work in the community to build the infrastructure that will deliver broadband services over the NBN access network.” “We’re working hard to roll the network out as quickly as we can with as little

disruption as possible, and we appreciate your patience while construction is underway, “he told News Of The Area. Mr Dornbusch said, “Once complete, you’ll be able to order a plan through your preferred phone and internet provider. Dear Mrs BP, The thing is, I’m thinking that your son is probably a vegan too. Not one of those lean, six-pack bearing vegans on Instagram, but a weedy little kid who tries his best, he really does, Mrs BP, but his iron levels are so low that he not only fails to get any ball time, but he’s actually a huge hindrance to the team. They’ve taken him on because that is the AFL charter. You have to accept everyone and hope for the best. You know, you could just swap with the dad doing oranges. I’m sure he’d rather be on the end of a pair of tongs. Or how about you stand in for the goalie referee? All you have to do in that situation is wave around a white flag, or two white flags, I’m not sure of the finer details, but you’ll know you’ve done the wrong thing when some six-foot tall monster with a man bun and hairy thighs comes charging at you, full of vengeance. How about instead of the usual snags and bacon, you cook up some haloumi, capsicum and tomato skewers? I can just imagine the parents who are spending their entire weekend driving to and from the Myall Coast to Terrigal turning up for their usual caffeine fix and snag sandwich, and instead getting some kale juice and a vegie kebab. Yep, they’re just going to love you, Mrs BP. Look, I really don’t know what else to suggest, so I’m going to tell you what the coach tells the kids when they start whining about petty things on the field: ‘Suck it up, princess. Marlins and Power represent in rep Challenge By Rachael VAUGHAN

MEDOWIE’S Ferodale Park played host last weekend to the inaugural Black Diamond WAFL Representative Challenge. The best of the Black Diamond competition came together to represent their local areas and compete in a round robin tournament. The Black Diamond competition encompasses a vast area and the quality of player is increasing all the time, making it one of the best women’s sporting competitions in regional New South Wales. The Representative challenge consisted of a team from Newcastle, Central Coast and the Hunter which included players from the local Port Stephens Power and Nelson Bay Marlins clubs. In fact, Nelson Bay Marlins half-back Kate Holland

captained our Hunter team but she wasn’t alone with Madeline Norton, Kaitlyn Douglass, Annalise Norton, Molly Simpson, Sophie Balcombe and Natasha Flint all representing the Marlins. Port Stephens Power were represented by Amanda Lewis, Tia Davidson and Cheyenne Neu with other players coming from Muswellbrook, Singleton and Maitland. The tournament didn’t begin well for the Hunter team, finding themselves down by twelve points after the first 25-minute half against the Central Coast. The second half was a different story with the Central Coast unable to trouble the scorer in the second stanza but also unable to stop the local team from running riot and scoring an unanswered 16 points to go on and win the game. q The Nations of Origin league tournament was a crowd favourite again this year.

NATIONS of Origin wound up another successful tournament this year, with a record number of sports being contested across Port Stephens and Newcastle venues. Joining the returning sports of Rugby League, Netball and Football Fives, Boxing and Basketball were contested for the first time this year. In a wonderful display of culture, sportsmanship and identity, a plethora of Indigenous nations took out titles this year in recognition of their tournament efforts. Without fail each and every year, the Nations Rugby League Tournament draws the biggest crowd of the week. The results of the League tournament were: Gumbaynggir as plate male winner, Awabakal B as Plate male runners-up, Awabakal A as plate female winner, and Wiradjuri Ochres as plate female runners-up. Wiradjuri South were the trophy male winners, Darug West were the trophy male runners-up, Awabakal B were the trophy female winners, and Wonnarua Cessnock were the female runners-up.
