Frank Future of Imagine Cruises and one of Port Stephens environmental advocates told News Of The Area that the main concern was fuel leakage.

“Dialysis is a debilitating and restrictive regime, making it almost impossible for those needing the treatment to take a holiday. On average, dialysis patients need to have treatment for up to five hours at a time,

“I understand that the Vanessa S had 4000 litres of diesel on board,” Mr Future said. “The main concern is the impact of the fuel on this very sensitive environment.” “I feel for the skipper and the crew as a fellow mariner,” he added. “The boat is now fully submerged in 14 metres of water,” a Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said.

“Fuel is dispersing in the adverse conditions of two and a half metres swell and 25 knot westerly winds.” “Roads and Maritime officers have assessed the pollution and retrieved the life raft which was still attached to the trawler.” “The site will continue to be monitored, including any environmental impacts.” A buoy marks the position of the vessel.

The bus is staffed with a dialysis nurse and a renal technician who look after up to six people each week and are managed by Royal North Shore Hospital. Advice is being issued via a Securite on VHF Channel 16 warning boaters of the danger. Roads and Maritime will issue a clean-up notice to the owner of the vessel. The vessel, which is part of the local fishing fleet, is insured and will be removed once conditions subside. Roads and Maritime will carry out an investigation into the incident.

Port’s Economy Under Microscope

By Marian SAMPSON

AN empowering new report which delivers a snapshot of the statistics which make up Port Stephens’ economic position as at 2017 has just been released. The report offers insights into the local economy which will highlight potential investment opportunities,

economic impacts and allow Council to make better use of allocated resources. The report delves into the demographics of the region and looks at employment, industry housing and tourism activities. Jane Perrin of Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “Council is very proud to release the first ever

edition of the Port Stephens Economic Profile showcasing the depth and diversity of industry across the LGA.” “This is a valuable resource to encourage investment and business to the area.” “We hope that by sharing this catalogue of available data, we can enable informed decisions that will lead

to more investment and economic opportunities for our region,” Ms Perrin said. The report would be of use to business, students, community groups and educators. While Council has the Remplan report, it is constantly updating datasets which can be accessed by the community.

Potential developers and investors who are informed about the profile of the region are more likely to deliver positive business offerings to the residents and visitors to our region. You can find the information in the report on the economic data and advice page on Council’s website.

Back to The Polls By Marian SAMPSON

PORT Stephens residents get their long overdue chance to vote for representation at Council elections, which will be held on Saturday, 9 September 2017. People who have turned 18 need to enrol to vote before 31 July, 2017. If you live in Port Stephens and are enrolled on the Commonwealth and State electoral roll, you will automatically be included on the roll for this local government election. Those who have moved to Port Stephens since the 2012 election will need to update

their enrolment to vote in the election. The dust has settled after the NSW Government’s attempt to force a merger between Port Stephens and Newcastle City which has seen the elections delayed for the region. It is expected that the position for Mayor will be hotly contended in 2017. Kate Washington Member for Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “As a result of the State government’s Council amalgamation debacle, our right to vote for our Council representatives has frustratingly been delayed 12 months. We can’t waste this

opportunity to see positive change for Port Stephens.” “The people of Port Stephens deserve a Council that is transparent, engaged and honest, I urge everyone to think carefully about who they vote for.” Kate also expressed how important it is for young people to be enrolled to vote, so they can have a say as it is their futures which will be impacted by decisions made by governments today. You can confirm your enrolment details and find out which Port Stephens Council Ward you reside in, by visiting the NSW Electoral Commission at https:// roll.elections.nsw.gov.au/ NSWLookUp/.

Activities on the day include koala friendly backyard workshops, tree giveaways, crafts and the premiere screening of ‘Journey of Steve the Koala’. Enjoy the free music and entertainment while learning more about the amazing Koala population of Port Stephens. Deborah Stretton told News Of The Area, “d’Albora Marinas Nelson Bay loves playing host to an array of community activities such as the ‘Koala Gala’ to not just help showcase the nature diversity within our local area, but by giving organisations the opportunity to communicate with the general public and provide an educational interactive experience.” At 2.30pm and 4.30pm, Port Stephens Council will host workshops in Broughtons on the Bay, providing tips and hints on how to make your backyard koala friendly, information on planting koala friendly trees plus lots of information on the unique koala population of Port Stephens. From 5pm, the premiere screening of the ‘Journey of Steve the Koala’ will take place in Broughtons on the Bay, which was designed by local artists and put together by school students from across the Tomaree Peninsula. The animation focuses on some of the obstacles our local koala population face daily. The development of this animation formed part of an education program supported by the NSW Environmental Trust, which was delivered by Port Stephens Council to over 800 school children across Port Stephens. The animation will be followed by a free screening of ‘Sing’. Koala Gala is part of the Naturefest program.

Twenty different industry groups were represented in the sessions which saw Year 10 students exposed to a range of career sectors, giving them the chance to explore options of interest. Emergency Services, finance, construction and nursing were all among the potential industries showcased. Victoria Pitt of Newcastle University, who spoke to students about studying nursing and midwifery, told News Of The Area, “It’s an exciting day, giving students exposure to different degrees and potentially changing their lives through undertaking future studies at university.” The defence force created strong interest with the students. Don’t be a Dummy with Deductions

q Margaret Wilkinson of Corlette Landcare at Ngioka Centre with a Coastal Rosemary Bush purchased from the Ngioka Centre.

THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers to avoid incorrect claims for workrelated expenses at tax time this year. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said the ATO is using real-time data to compare taxpayers with others in similar occupations and income brackets, to identify higher-thanexpected claims related to expenses including vehicle, travel, internet and mobile phone, and self-education. “It is important to know what you’re eligible to claim before lodging your tax return and to make sure you don’t claim more than you’re entitled to,” Ms Anderson said. “Many taxpayers don’t have a good understanding of what deductions they can claim, and believe they

Ngioka Centre Reprieve By Marian SAMPSON COMMUNITY outrage has lead to the Ngioka Centre’s operation being taken off the agenda for next Tuesday night’s Council meeting. Council officers have agreed to meet with volunteers to discuss the future of this valued community owned facility. There are many different groups that access plants from the Ngioka Centre including Tidy Towns, Landcare groups, parks committees and members of

the community. Margaret Wilkinson of the Corlette Landcare group told News Of The Area, “The Ngioka Centre will continue to operate as it has done in the past for the moment.” “Our local native endemic species supply is not under threat.” “The Ngioka Centre has lots of good strong healthy native plants available in all sizes. I urge the community to show their support for the long term running of the program, which provides endemic species to the

can claim for items which they in fact can’t. Some taxpayers even think that you can make a standard claim of $300 without having spent the money. You don’t need receipts for claims up to $300 but you must have actually spent the money, and be able to show us how you worked out your deduction if asked.” Ms Anderson said that deductions for work uniforms are also a common trap for employees at tax time. “It’s a myth that you can claim everyday clothes, for example, black pants and a plain white shirt, even if you only wear them to work, and your employer says you have to. To legitimately claim your uniform, it needs to be unique and distinctive, such as a uniform with your employer’s logo, or be specific to your occupation and not for everyday use, like chef’s pants or coloured safety vests.”

“It sounds like a small thing, but we aren’t talking about small sums of money here. There are 13 million taxpayers, so if everyone over claims even $100 that adds up to a lot.” Ms Anderson says there are three golden rules for taxpayers to remember to get it right. 1. You have to have spent the money yourself and can’t have been reimbursed. 2. The claim must be directly related to earning your income. 3. You need a record to prove it. The myDeductions tool in the ATO app can help make keeping records easier, and at tax time you can send your deductions to your tax agent or upload them directly to myTax. This year myDeductions is available to sole traders as well as individuals.

community,” she said. Dive in with confidence at Port Pools By Marian SAMPSON

SWIMMERS can dive in with confidence at Port Stephens swimming pools. Our pools are among the top performers in the state when it comes to safety, according to an audit by Royal Life Saving NSW. Tomaree Aquatic Centre came in fourth overall on 89.8 while Lakeside Leisure Centre has been ranked as the best facility in the state for safety with an impressive score of 93.6. Lakeside Leisure Centre and Tomaree Aquatic Centre were also recognised for being consistent high

performers, coming in first and third respectively. Tilligerry Aquatic Centre was 11th with a score of 86.1, which is above the state safety average of 83.99. The Aquatic Facility Safety Assessment was conducted by Royal Life Saving NSW in conjunction with Belgravia Leisure. It measured the performance of the 18 Belgravia Leisure facilities when compared with the 77 aquatic facilities assessed across NSW. Belgravia Leisure manages 100 aquatic and sport facilities across Australia, including the Ian

Thorpe Aquatic Centre, Andrew Boy Charlton Pool and Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre, as well as the Port Stephens public swimming pools. Ian Crawford, Council’s Contract and Services Coordinator, told News Of The Area that the results are a very positive endorsement of Port Stephens Council’s and Belgravia Leisure’s partnership in the management of our aquatic facilities. “These rankings show that Port Stephens pools are some of the safest in the state which is a great achievement, highlighting not only the

quality of the facilities but the locals who staff the facilities as well.” “These ratings will only improve, after the rolling closures scheduled over the winter season for maintenance and improvements have been completed at the facilities,” he said. While the pools in Port Stephens are not new facilities, they are outperforming more modern installations which says a great deal about the management of the facilities. The pools offer a range of activities including exercise classes for all ages.

At 8.00pm on a Sunday night, my son tells me that he has to dress up as a wolf for a performance. I do not have anything in the house that resembles a wolf. What should I do? Mrs PV, Salamander Bay

Well, Mrs PV, what you should do is nothing, because that will teach your son to be more organised and selfsufficient. By doing nothing, you will hopefully be bringing up a child who turns into an adult who is not rewarded by leaving unpleasant tasks to others – right up until the very last minute on a Sunday night when you should be drinking red wine in front of an open fire or watching a movie, or soaking in a bath. But that is not what you will do, because you are a mother and you will feel judged by the drama teacher if little Sonny-Jim turns up to his performance with wolf-like facial expressions drawn onto his face with your mascara and a pair of Explorer socks that do look slightly wolfish, because they’ve been washed with the towels and are covered in loose threads. Instead you will rant and rave and then you will go door-knocking, begging your neighbours for any costume items that looks remotely like they could be turned into a wolf with a few safety pins or some double-sided tape or a nail gun. Or else you will go up to the school, like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and you will explain that your son has performance jitters and is suffering from some form of be-a-wolf-by-Monday-post-traumatic-stressdisorder and he will not be performing on Monday, but on Friday, when he is feeling better. And then, if that doesn’t work, you will just raise your face skywards and howl. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Budget Snub for Port Stephens RESIDENTS of Port Stephens have been overlooked in the NSW Budget, according to Port Stephens MP Kate Washington, with no funding allocated to Nelson Bay Road upgrades, Tomaree Hospital or new schools. Kate Washington has called out the Government for spending billions of dollars on inner city road projects while ignoring regional communities like Port Stephens. “Families across Port Stephens have every right to

be upset by the government continuing to ignore the educational needs of their children,” Ms Washington said. “Our schools are bursting at the seams, demountables have become permanent fixtures and maintenance backlogs are soaring. And yet there’s no funding for new schools or upgrades for any of Port Stephens’ schools.” The Government’s hospital projects have not extended to Tomaree.

“Residents on the Tomaree Peninsula deserve peace of mind that they have a local hospital that’s capable of meeting their urgent health needs. It’s terribly disappointing to see that Tomaree Hospital has once again been overlooked in this budget,” Ms Washington said. But Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald MLC, said, “The Liberal National Government is delivering sound economic management and record

infrastructure across the State.” “The Liberal National Government is delivering for the Hunter after a long period of neglect. It includes funding for the revitalisation of Newcastle, planning for the Lower Hunter Hospital, school upgrades, support for a Strategic case for the Lake Macquarie transport interchange, [and] another $75million for the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund,” he added.

Destination Points North for Bay Probus Club By Marian SAMPSON

NELSON Bay Men’s Probus Club members are getting set to cruise to beautiful Port Douglas.

It’s perfect timing for the members and their partners to head north and escape to the warmth of Queensland’s tropical north. The Port Douglas Cruise

follows a luncheon cruise that the group enjoyed on the Manning River last month. The Nelson Bay Men’s Probus Club is active and the gentlemen meet on the third

Thursday of the month at Nelson Bay Bowling Club. New members are welcome and Probus offers a great social outlet with a diverse range of activities

Bob Ritchie of the Nelson Bay Men’s Probus Club told The News Of The Area that being a part of Probus gives you opportunities to get out and explore the world with friends. “The sense of community which Probus offers is great for anyone who is retired,” he said. “Older people can often become isolated but when

The Nelson Bay Men’s Probus Club would like to invite other men to join them in getting the most out of life. For more information please contact Ken on 0429 494 343.

HSC Help for Regional Students

FOR over 28,000 Year 12 students living in regional NSW, access to quality subject-specific resources for their HSC is often very difficult. HSC in the Holidays aims to assist with the resource gap by conducting live events at a range of campuses including the University of Newcastle (UON) during holiday periods. The program has operated for the past 11 years and includes a range of subject-specific lectures across 18 different subjects. For the first time, HSC

Help is being offered to students in regional NSW to gain access to these lectures during the July holidays via a live streaming service. Year 11 and 12 students can view high definition video that is broadcast live during these lectures. As part of the program, a free lecture titled ACE the HSC will also be streamed live on HSC in the Holiday’s Facebook page on Monday 3rd July (10am-12pm). Program director Shane Hardcastle told News Of The Area, “Each lecture is designed specifically to increase student knowledge

and skills prior to the HSC Trial Exams in Term 3.” Each two-hour session is presented by highly experienced HSC teachers/ markers and will addresses important information including key content from core topics and strategies to maximise marks The sessions also provide insights into what HSC markers are looking for within responses and how to respond to a range of HSC questions including the provision of worked answers. Former program participant Michael Laden participated in an English

Free School Holiday Fun By Marian SAMPSON

SCHOOL holiday activities in cooler weather that don’t break the bank are always a dilemma for parents. Fortunately there are some great options for kids these school holidays. It’s not too hard to find a great park to check out, and there are some wonderful options with the new equipment at Fingal Bay and the skate parks at Anna Bay and Nelson Bay. d’Albora Marinas at Nelson Bay has free fish feeding daily and a giant chess board to entertain. It gets a bit trickier on days when the weather is cool or it rains. Fortunately there are some free activities and suggestions to keep parents sane and children happy.. Salamander Bay Shopping Centre has some activities nearly every day of the school

pools at Boat Harbour, the walk to the top of Tomaree Head or consider the walk along the foreshore and around Wanda Wanda Head which can be accessed from Wanda Beach. Perhaps take a drive to the Tilligerry Habitat which is open from 9am-3pm daily

with free entry. Charlie Bell, who is a committee member of Tilligerry Habitat, told News Of The Area, “It’s a great place to bring children where they can enjoy a 2km walk in picturesque bushland and you may even see a koala in the wild.”

10am,11am and 12pm daily. There are also a range of craft activities 8-14 July where kids can create everything from bug catchers to wind chimes.

Naturefest has some interesting options. The program is online at www. destinationportstephens. org.au and of course you can always check out the rock

the largest Aboriginal youth events in NSW. The event celebrates Reconciliation, Education, Cultural Identity and Sport. All participants are required to have 80 percent school attendance to

participate. Each team represents an Aboriginal Nation and wears the Nation’s totem. Phillip Ross of the PCYC told News Of The Area, “The PCYC sees attendance at school as extremely

important. We understand and value the impact of education for young people in laying the foundations for their future.” “Teams representing the Worimi Nation will be represented across a range of

Port’s Sporty Kids Get Rebate

12 BAY NEWS OF THE AREA

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

By Marian SAMPSON FAMILIES of sporty kids are set to gain a small win from the State Government’s budget. Parents of kids that participate in sport will be eligible for a $100 rebate per child annually under the new budget initiative which starts next year. While $100 may not even cover the costs of team registrations and uniforms, it is a small win for family budgets. The initiative is aiming towards a five percent reduction in childhood obesity in the state. Cathryn Churchill from Nelson Bay Hockey Club told News Of The Area, “The rebate is a welcome incentive for parents to encourage their kids to be more involved in sport.” “Most families have all their children involved in playing different sports, which can be a burden on budgets, when each sport has registration, plus expenses such as uniform, equipment and travel.” “Any assistance from the government will be not only helpful to parents but will encourage greater participation for all the family in sport,” she said. Port Stephens has a great array of sports that kids can be involved in and each sport has its own supportive community.
