‘Shark Boy’ photo takes world stage By Sarah STOKES LOCAL lad Eden Hasson made a big splash last week after a close encounter with a great white shark along with world media headlines. Eden, 10, from Salamander Bay, was surfing at Samurai Beach in Port Stephens with his sister Olivia and brother Archie. It was the last surf of the day and Eden’s father, Chris Hasson, was taking photos from the rocks. In Eden’s words, “I caught a very good left hander, I dropped down the wave and as I went up for a re-entry I saw a dark shadow. I wasn’t sure what it was so I forgot about it.” Meanwhile, Eden’s dad had spotted the dark shape lurking beneath the

WHERE TO GET YOUR PAPER
‘Shark Boy’ Eden Hasson FROM Page 1 surface in one of the photos. He had a quick look at the photo and realised it looked like a shark.
Chris shouted to his son, telling him to get back to the shore. He said he was shocked but didn’t want to scare his son, in case he came off the board. The shark was about 50 metres out and estimated to be a juvenile of about 2.5 metres.
Various shark experts have looked at the photograph and agree it is almost certainly a Great White Shark, including Peter McCabe, a well respected Newcastle surfer. Mr Hasson said that there had been a large group of stingrays in the ocean, which the younger sharks
find a real delicacy. He told News Of The Area, “I’m surprised it went international. It’s a positive story about an amazing photo.” The Hassons, who are keen surfers, have not let it put them off surfing. Eden went straight back in the water the next day.
Chris likened it to driving your car: “You put your seatbelt on and you don’t worry about having an accident.” “Everyone high-fived me and started calling me Shark Boy,” Eden Hasson said.

A Rough Landing By Jo FINN THE Australia Day boating conditions were not ideal for regular Bay spearfishing enthusiast Laurie Seddon, but things got a whole lot rougher on Mr Seddon’s trip home. Mr Seddon was driving back from Nelson Bay, his crew in separate cars, when a “wayward young driver” fishtailed across the road and impacted the side of Mr Seddon’s boat with the front of his vehicle. “I managed to get out to the shelf and back and then I got cleaned up on my way home,” Mr Seddon said. Mr Seddon told News Of The Area he saw “some real crazy [stuff] in the rear mirror and then the boat skidding down the road before hitting the grass and rolling over”. “After I checked the other driver, I went back and surveyed
the damage,” he said. “A lot of people had stopped to help, so we managed to get the boat back on the trailer, gathered up all my debris and limped for home.” Following a career that has involved many stressful encounters, Mr Seddon’s main concern was for the other driver who was a P-plater and “very traumatised” by the accident. His secondary concern was for his boat, affectionately known as “the Battered Sav”, which is now split from transom to front and “probably a writeoff”. The trailer was also described as “critical” along with some other colourful words that this paper is unfortunately unable to print. The spearfishing fraternity were quick to offer their condolences on social media, with friends saying they were
“sorry for his loss” but also keen to find out whether he had caught anything. For the record, “no Marlin were sighted” 55km out to sea, but the crew did spot one on the surface on their return home. When asked how he was

THE Probus Club of Port Stephens celebrated Australia Day 2017 with their annual Family Picnic at Sunset Beach. The very welcome and much-needed rain scared off a few members but it cleared up just in time for a very pleasant 4pm start. The Australia day afternoon saw a lot of fun, frivolity and fellowship with colourful outfits of varying degrees. “David Wilson was a standout in his yellow suit and green shirt, which was very Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi with a little bit of competition from Geoff and Jim,” Ann Gibson, Publicity Officer, told Bay News Of The Area.

Members sang a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem with the help of the Gibson grandchildren. “There was a fine rendition of ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ by the usual girly suspects and as all good fun, you just had to be there to appreciate the sentiment and the talent,” Ms Gibson said. The next meeting is on the second Thursday of the month, 9.30am at Nelson Bay Bowling Club and everybody is welcome. SIX Port Stephens residents and groups have been honoured with Port Stephens Annual Awards at this year’s Australia Day celebrations in Port Stephens. Acknowledged for their ongoing contribution to the community, nominees and Award recipients were recognised in a ceremony at Riverside Park, Raymond Terrace, as well as Fly Point Nelson Bay. The Citizen of the Year award was taken out by Hazel Grey, who has given over 60 years’ service across a wide variety of organisations, including the Red Cross, RSL, CWA and Raymond Terrace Baptist Church. Medowie Christian School alum and Youth Parliament Representative Carissa Maher was the deserving recipient of Young Citizen of the Year. Living with a chronic illness, Carissa has used the opportunity provided through the Youth Parliament to speak about the struggles of daily life with people living with invisible disabilities. Beginning his martial arts journey at the age of seven, Tony Gillespie has taken out Sportsperson of the Year, having brought Taekwondo and fitness to over 100 students. At the beginning of 2016, Tony also started teaching martial art to people with a disability. Peter Murray accepted a Port Stephens Medal on behalf of Boat Harbour Parks and Reserves Committee, and Tomaree Accommodation Services Inc. also received a Port Stephens Medal and was represented by Pamela Raeburn. A third Port Stephens Medal was received by David Sams.
Mayor of Port Stephens Bruce MacKenzie said the Annual Awards are a great opportunity to come together and thank those who do so much for our area. “Australia Day is a time for us to celebrate what’s great about our community and the people who positively contribute to our region every day,” he said. “This year’s nominees have worked in a range

It was great to see that Port Stephens Council provided free Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags as well as ice blocks and chips for children. Free pony rides were a great hit with a giant slide and jumping castles for children. The RAAF honoured the day with a Flypast. The Alpaca & sheep shearing demonstrations with Dean Shearman from Shearman Livestock and Contracting, with his baby animals, kept not only the children focused but mums and dads too. All day markets saw more than 90 stalls, and a beautiful display from Port Stephens Classic Automobile Association of vintage and classic cars brought a little bit of Top Gear to Nelson Bay. JD’s World of Magic and the Australian Reptile Park Shows and educational talks all proved popular with the children. It was great to see Displays by the Rural Fire Service, NSW Fire Brigade, the Spinners and Weavers and the RAAF Cadets who, all freshly ironed and spit polished, looking like the Airmen of tomorrow. Starshine face painting were kept busy and Airbrush tattoos saw most children with their own unique tattoo at the end of the day. Eminent Residents Award n the O Couch Ceremony By Jewell DRURY

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis.Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.
Dear Jasminda,
My little girl started school this week and I’m at a loose end. It’s the first time my house has been kiddie-free since she was born. Help! Mrs VT, Pindimar Dear VT, I CAN remember the exact moment when I realised I needed to stop being a stay-at-home mum and go back to work. It was when the storyline of Bear in the Big Blue House became important to me. I was gaining one plot, but losing another. Those first weeks, armed with a briefcase and a breast pump, were hard. Being separated from your offspring is no walk in the park, whether it is because you are returning to work or study and they have to be put into childcare, or they are starting school and the nest is suddenly empty. A lot of this comes down to that unfortunate condition known as ‘mother guilt’. We are guilty when we go to work and we are guilty when we don’t. We are particularly guilty if, like you, we feel as though we have some free time on our hands. Don’t you worry, VT. In no time at all you’ll be whipping up 24 choc-chip cookies, teaching voluntary ethics classes and driving to three different inter-school activities in one day, because schools love parental involvement and if you’ve got a void, trust me, they’ll fill it. Having your little cherub at school can initially involve a period of grief. But then, one day, you’ll say, “I’ll miss you, sweetheart”, and you’ll try not to let her see that little skip in your step as you hotfoot it home. And then you’ll put on a load of washing, clean the house in one hour instead of the usual five, and dance around in your husband’s Y-fronts, singing into a candelabra like you’re Tom Cruise in Risky Business. And that, VT, is when you know you’ve reached the ‘acceptance’ stage of the grieving process. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

BAY News Of The Area was invited to the 8th Annual Eminent Residents Awards at Harbourside Haven on Australia Day and there were more than 70 residents in attendance. The Award Ceremony was a part of the Australia Day festivities to honour those eminent residents who volunteer tirelessly, adding to the other residents’ happiness and comfort whilst living at Harbourside Haven. “The Eminent resident awards are by election from other residents and are kept secret until the day of the ceremony,” Cath Gridland, the event’s organiser told Bay News Of The Area. The tradition has been going for 10 years and the winners have their names placed in gold lettering on the honours board in the foyer of the Recreation Hall. Harbourside has residents who have recently hit the 100 year mark as well as many in their mid to late 90s, all of whom engage in the various activities, including croquet at the centre. Two Awards were presented by the Chairman

Photo by Jewell Drury of the Board, Gerry Mohan, and the winners were Lillian Townsend and Joy Hart. Joy Hart began life in Mascot and moved to Harbourside five years ago. Ms Hart loves joining in everything and took on the huge job to organise the library and is now a full-time volunteer librarian. Asked what Joy likes best about village life, Joy told Bay News Of The Area, “I love having no worries, I have good neighbours and friends in the village and Shoal Bay is a beautiful place to live.” The second recipient was
Lillian Townsend. Ms Townsend was born in Weston and moved to Harbourside 10 years ago and began teaching art to the Harbourside residents. Lillian also volunteers at the Hospital as a Pink Lady taking the afternoon teas. She also volunteers at most functions and loves her life at Harbourside Haven. “Where do you get such wonderful staff from? I have never heard a snarl or an unkind word from one of them,” Lillian told Chairman, Gerry Mohan. “What makes Harbourside

The morning after the camp set-up, activities commenced in full swing, bright and early. Over the course of the camp, Scouts participated in water safety lessons, canoeing, archery, camel riding, horizontal bungee, scouting activities on survival, free time swimming in the river and using a giant water slide. One night, the Scouts were treated to a movie on the big screen under the stars. Another night, all scouts
and their leaders slept out in a dairy paddock among the cow paddies under their self-made hutchies consisting of a tarp and pole, demonstrating great skill and technique in doing so. During the closing parade, one Scout was presented with an Australian Scout medallion. The award is the highest level badge work achievable for the Scout section, and therefore a very special moment as not many Scouts achieve this level Medallion. The closing parade was a colourful night, with a display of fireworks and a disco that the local cows enjoyed. This year’s Corroboree was the first for the new

EVERY year the Hunter and Coastal region holds a five day Scout camp. This year it was located at Lostock Scout Camp on the Paterson River, in the farm lands near the Barrington Tops. The Corroboree, as it is known, began on the 18 January with a fun-filled camp set up. The camp is based on the patrol system, with Troops camping Jamboree style. Harbourside Haven is certainly a place where the residents feel a sense of safety, love and friendships within their community. Catering on the day was by the residents and their families revealing more of the bonds of this inclusive community. District Scout Leader for Port Stephens, Dennis Conroy. Dennis told News Of The Area, “This camp was a great way for the youth to get out and learn new life skills and enjoy the activities along with meeting new youths from other districts who will become lifelong friends. “It was certainly way better than sitting at home in front of a television, playing video games.” “Life is about getting out of your comfort zone and learning new things, and the youths that attended this camp did just that,” he said. Dear News Of The Area,
I’M on holidays from Sydney and read the Meg Drury comments regarding what Australia Day means to her (“What Does Aussie Day Mean to You?” News Of The Area 26 January 2017). I must say I’m pretty sick and tired of these types of comments being put out there. Thank God these people are always in the overwhelming vast minority. You can’t change the past. Wouldn’t it be more productive to accept the “now” and “embrace the future” of this great nation and its people. Mark Stagg Sydney

Transition to Work TRANSITION to Work, a branch of Workskil Youth, is a great service designed to support young people aged 15-21 years on their journey to employment. The service has a strong focus on practical intervention and work experience to build a young person’s skills, confidence and readiness to engage in employment. Young People can be referred to Transition to Work services through different pathways, reflecting the differing circumstances of each individual. One pathway is by being referred by a local Transition to Work provider through the Department of Human Services when income support is first claimed.
Another pathway to Transition to Work is when the young person registers directly with a provider and the third way is by being referred by a job-active provider. This is a Commonwealth Government funded service and Nadine Potter, The Transition to Work Manager from the Nelson Bay Office, services the Tomaree Peninsula, Raymond Terrace, Singleton and Muswellbrook. “Part of my job is to provide help for the young person through education courses to complete Year 12 or gain a qualification above, as well as giving them access to training programs, education support and employment opportunities,” Nadine Potter told Bay News Of The Area. Ms Potter has worked

OOSH places falling short By Rachael VAUGHAN
q MP and Shadow Minister for Early Education Kate Washington meets with Mother Emma Gordon at one of the few OOSH centres in Port Stephens.
WORKING parents face an extra hurdle in Port Stephens when trying to make their working schedules fit in with school aged children requiring before and after school care. Across the whole of Port Stephens area, over 6,000 children compete for just 396 OOSH (out of school hours) places. In the Tomaree Peninsula region specifically, around 1,800 students compete for 143 approved before and after school care places. This is approximately one OOSH place for every 12 students requiring care. As the new school year begins, parents who have been unable to obtain care for their children are faced with the struggle of juggling
Raising Dust and Dollars
work commitments whilst ensuring their children are safe before and after school. With OOSH places in such high demand, and the fallout numbers of students who have missed out being so extreme, parents are being forced to reduce work hours, losing much needed income for their families. Alternatively, parents are also seeking out alternative informal arrangements that are often unregulated and inherently risky. In 2015, Mike Baird and the NSW Government promised 45,000 new before and after school places by 2019, but the NSW Auditor General recently found a mere 5,993 new places have been created. News Of The Area met with Shadow Minister for Early Education Kate
Washington who said, “The grants offered by the Government to create additional OOSH places have been a complete failure, and the [former] Baird Government has failed to deliver on their commitment.” “Parents are being unfairly affected in all this, they are dealing with extra stresses over the safety and care of their children.” Emma Gordon, mother of a 2017 Kindergarten student, told News Of The Area, “There are just not adequate spaces available in Port Stephens for families.” “I have managed to rally around friends to help me with care for my son on the days I missed out on a place, but I worry for the families who don’t have that support network.”
IN 2016, Mick MacGregor and Melanie Clune, won the 4WD class in the Super Endeavour Rally, an 18-day event through Central Australia.
By Jewell DRURY
IN 2016, Mick MacGregor and Melanie Clune, owners of the Central Motel Nelson Bay, won the 4WD class in the Super Endeavour Rally, an 18-day event through Central Australia. This year sees the pair take on the Coral Coast Adventure in their Car 12 ‘Sooby Doo’. The first time Mick MacGregor heard about the Endeavour Foundation was while watching a documentary on The Great Endeavour Rally Fundraiser. Mick told his partner Melanie Clune about what he had seen and coincidently Melanie shared how she had previously worked with The Endeavour Foundation in a travel business that supported people with disabilities. “As soon as I saw the
documentary, I knew that this was a wonderful organisation that I wanted to support,” Mick MacGregor told Bay News Of The Area. Mick and Melanie registered for the 2016 Rally titled, ‘The Super Endeavour Rally’, and took out the 4WD Class Award, bringing home the title for Port Stephens. Together the formidable team raised $4500 to give the charity a final figure of $305,000 from the proceeds of last year’s rally. The Endeavour Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organisation that was established in Queensland in 1951. Today, The Endeavour Foundation is a community organisation working with people with a disability so that they have real possibilities to live life to the full, whether that means moving into a new
home, gaining qualifications that help fulfil individual aspirations or finding a job. Each year funds raised from the Great Endeavour Rally have benefited individuals and regional communities, improved support options, and achieved better outcomes so that people with a disability have greater opportunities for independence, choice, control, and inclusion. This year’s rally begins in Yeppoon, travelling to Hervey Bay via Cooktown with local communities becoming involved as the Rally passes each small town. The small communities come together providing meals and support for the Rally participants. “We had such a great time last year and can’t wait to do it all again this year,” Melanie Clune said.
week. We are still having scores in the 40s, with Danny Petith and Paul Wheatley both winning their respective competitions with 43 points. Ron Gabb could consider himself unlucky in that he scored 43 points but was still beaten on a count-back.

Local By Mandy ELLIS IT’S that time of year again where registrations are being taken for various sporting groups around the area. Ronald Bergan, Master Instructor, is looking forward to yet another successful year for his students at Him-Do Tae Kwon Do at Salamander Bay. “People come to train for many reasons, the main ones are increase confidence, selfdefence and for the younger students to improve their co-ordination,” Ronald told News Of The Area. “Being an indoor sport, we are unaffected by the weather and importantly, we train on rubber mats which helps to reduce impact on leg joints, there is no need to compete against anyone but yourself.” Adrian Hill, student at Him-Do said, “I like the fact I can see I am progressing as we are graded every three months, this inspires me to keep going and improving, I have lost weight and it is a very supportive group, I wish I had started earlier.” As well as the regular

tournaments being held in 2017, Ron is organising the third Port Stephens Taekwondo Championships being held at Tomaree High School on 11 and 12 March. The event is open to the public and with competitors from other States and overseas, it makes for a very entertaining weekend. It is important to note this is a not-for-profit event with all proceeds going to promote the sport. Sponsors and dignitaries attend the Opening Ceremony and will also be handing out medals during the event. “We really need a dedicated sports venue large enough to hold national titles,” Ron said. “I don’t want to take the event to Newcastle, ideally, I would like to keep it here so the local community can benefit.” Community support has been fantastic in the previous two years and Ron is expecting the same again in this year’s tournament. For more information on this tournament call Ron on 0438 45 0835.
