FROM Page 1 the “Party Hole” at the par 3 14th. A spirited group of men dressed in pastel shades or frocks and adorned with gorgeous pink and yellow bouquets, greeted each group of ladies as they reached the tee. For a gold coin donation, the ladies were offered sparkling wine and cupcakes, plus a tee shot hit by some of the club’s best male players. An impressive giant pink stiletto was provided courtesy of the craftsmen at Salamander Men’s Shed. The ladies also got right into the theme, with clothes, faces and even carts all resplendent in shades of pink. Winners of the golf event were Peri Kennedy, Judy Schulz, Fran Giudes and Beth MacDuff. Participation was outstanding with 140 ladies

CORLETTE Parks Reserves and Landcare Group has a general working bee planned at the Lorikeet Reserve, Spinnaker Way Corlette at 9am Monday 3 April. This reserve is used regularly by locals walking or biking through, family gatherings and to exercise dogs. With continued maintenance this area will eventually form part of a wildlife corridor to link Kingfisher Reserve and Mambo Wetlands to Lorikeet Reserve and Corlette Hill. The Corlette Parks Reserves and Landcare Group is made up of local volunteers who help look after various parks, reserves and bushland areas in Corlette. The main focus of the group is to improve the presentation of parks and reserves, and to undertake bush regeneration and habitat improvement projects. As volunteers of Port Stephens Council, they are supported with equipment, advice, training and insurance. The group’s goal on April 3 is to tidy and improve the area which has been planted
with the enthusiastic help from our local community over the past two years. A total of 2400 native trees and grasses have been planted in this area since November 2015 and all are coming along well. The group invite any volunteers to come and work in the area regularly to tidy and keep the weeds down until the native plants are fully established. “We hope we are able to encourage locals to join our friendly group of volunteers who are a 355c Committee operated under the Port Stephens Council,” Barb Stack, Publicity and New Membership Officer told Bay News Of The Area. “Interested helpers can meet us at 9am at the main entrance to Lorikeet Reserve on Spinnaker Way (adjacent to Windward Close), Corlette,” Ms Stack said. “Tools are supplied, solid shoes are necessary with protective clothing and a hat,” Barb Stack added. Morning tea will be provided afterwards on the lovely sandstone rocks put in by Urban Growth when the reserve was first established. Contact the Works Co-ordinator Margaret Wilkinson on 4981 2881 or Barbara Stack, New Membership Officer on 4919 1415 for more information.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
My husband is a fisherman. Good Friday is coming up and, like every other year, all our friends expect free seafood. Half of them aren’t even religious. This is his job, not just a hobby. How do we politely let them know that we can’t afford to offer this service? Mrs BW Tea Gardens
Dear BW, I can see where you’re coming from. It’s a bit like being at a dinner party and cornering the local GP to discuss your advanced case of ringworm. Is he supposed to pause, Oyster Kilpatrick juice dripping from his chin, to give you a quick consult? Your issue stems from people regarding fishing as a hobby and not an occupation. They probably think your husband enjoys braving gale force winds and putting his life at risk, just so he can ‘Vac-Pac’ a few opaque fillets for a heathen at Easter. It’s similar to when people ask me to write their job applications in my spare time because I can string a sentence together. Do I look like an employment consultant? I can assure you, BW, that I do not. What’s required is a bit of reverse psychology. Call your plumber friend at midnight to come over and fix your blocked toilet because he has a way with plungers. Ask your farmer mate if you can carve the leg off one of his lambs because you feel like a baked dinner. Deliver Fido the poodle to your veterinarian buddy before you go away for two weeks because he clearly loves dogs. They’ll get the message. And if they don’t, maybe you need to acquaint yourself with some new, more astute, friends. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
WITH Easter rapidly approaching and the stores all filled with chocolate, it is a really great time to discuss just how toxic some foods are to dogs, and other animals. Ilona Hudson from Noah’s Ark Vets spoke to News Of The Area, asking owners to do some research and choose yummy treats that don’t pose a risk to our furry and feathered friends. “They are cute, but don’t be fooled into giving them treats that might be bad just because they have a sad face.” “Chocolate is never appropriate for dogs.” All types of chocolate contain a toxin that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, heart problems, seizures and even death. Xylitol is one most people may not have heard of, simply because it is an additive in
OPINION
Dear News Of The Area, A SINCERE thank you to your newspaper for the great article and photo publicising
common foods, rather than an instantly recognisable product like chocolate. It is a common sweetener found in gum, lollies, baked goods and a lot of diet foods which can cause vomiting, lethargy, coordination problems and liver failure. Avocado is primarily a problem for birds, rabbits, donkeys, horses, sheep and goats, with the biggest concern being cardiovascular damage and death in birds. Alcohol in any form can be harmful for pets, even in the smallest amounts. Onion and garlic in the smallest quantities can cause weakness, vomiting and breathing problems. Make sure to keep an eye out for those on even the simplest foods, like takeaway pizza and Chinese. Caffeine can be fatal, including the caffeine found in tea and chocolate. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure. Milk and other dairy can cause digestive problems.
Macadamia nuts can be toxic, cause weakness, vomiting and muscle tremor. The nuts can also cause a blockage, and if the nuts are chocolate coated, that is even worse. Fat trimmed off meat is very hard for dogs to digest, and can cause upsets, including pancreatitis. Bones, both cooked and uncooked, can cause blockages, choking and digestive upsets. Seeds from fruits, such as peaches and plums, can cause blockages.
Raw eggs can be contaminated with salmonella or E. coli. Raw meat and fish need to be prepared with extreme care. Salty and sugary foods, yeast dough and human medicines should also be avoided. Ilona Hudson said,“Our pets are important members of our family, and we need to make sure we take care of them as best we can, and make appropriate choices for their diets.”

Shoal Bay vounteers repairing fencing at Cassilis
By Jewell DRURY
q Former farmer Arthur Burns gets ready to repair fences.
FIVE Shoal Bay retirees have just spent a week in the Cassilis area as volunteers constructing fences destroyed by the Sir Ivan bushfire that tore through western NSW in February. The five (average age over 70), regularly volunteer their time doing beach and bush regeneration and
Jags Prowled and Growled Concours sports car restorations take a piece of ‘scrap’ (valued around $60,000) and restore it to its former glory, resulting in the vehicle’s value around $200,000.
By Mandy ELLIS
A ONCE in a lifetime event at Fly Point on Saturday brought together car enthusiasts, stall holders at Coventry Corner Market, local community groups, Port Stephens Koalas, Marine Rescue Port Stephens, Rotary and local
radio station PSFM 100.9. Concours sports car restorations take a piece of ‘scrap’ (valued around $60,000) and restore it to its former glory, resulting in the vehicle’s value around $200,000. Shannons insurance is one of the biggest supporters of the event, and specialise in
insurance for elite vehicles. There were two competitions, Concours d’Elegance, which judged a vehicle on every single aspect of authenticity, even down to the last nut and bolt. There was a 1948 Jaguar 3.5 ltr saloon, later renamed Mark 4, which had a complete set of original tools in its boot. The other aspect of the competition was the Concours d’Etat which was for cleanliness and condition of the vehicle. On display were vehicles from the earliest Jaguars to the very latest worth around
Mindframe and Suicide prevention By Jewell DRURY
PORT Stephens Suicide and Prevention Network will be sponsoring a presentation by Mindframe on reporting and communicating about suicide and mental illness. Mindframe is an organisation which provides access to up to date, evidence based information to support reporting, portrayal and communication about suicide and mental illness. Funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Health under the National Suicide Prevention Program, the Mindframe Education and Training program is managed by the Hunter Institute of Mental Health. Program activities include national leadership, resource development and national dissemination, and ongoing contribution to the evidence base in this area. The program objectives

include building a collaborative relationship with Australian print, radio, television, and online news through the development of evidencebased resources and sector engagement enabling a more accurate and sensitive portrayal of suicide and mental illness. Another objective is to influence tertiary curriculum so that graduates in journalism and public relations will be aware of and able to respond to issues relating to suicide and mental illness. The organisation seeks to support sectors that work with the media such as the mental health sector, the suicide prevention sector and the police to facilitate better understanding about issues to consider when working with the media around mental illness and suicide. Providing practical advice and information to support the work of scriptwriters
and others involved in the development of Australian film, television and theatre, is another way the organisation works and to help inform truthful and authentic portrayals of mental illness and suicide. The Community is invited to come along with the presentation being held at All Saints Church, 25 Church St, Nelson Bay on Monday April 3 from 1-4pm. “It is so important when communicating about suicide and mental illnesses to use the correct terminology and to keep in mind that what you are saying could impact highly on those who have been affected by a particular tragic event,” Mr Bernie Fitzsimons, President of the Port Stephens Suicide and Prevention Network, told Bay News Of the Area. Afternoon tea will be provided at the event.
improvement as members of the Shoal Bay Beach Preservation Committee. This time they responded to a call from Blaze Aid seeking volunteers to help rebuild burnt out fences. The fire ravaged 82,000 ha of land across the top of the range, burnt down 35 homes in Uarbry and destroyed 6,000 km of fencing. Blaze Aid is a volunteer-
based organization that works with families and individuals in rural Australia suffering loss after natural disasters such as fires and floods. The Shoal Bay team comprised Terry Wall, Chairman of the Shoal Bay Beach Preservation Committee and team-mates, two former farmers Arthur Burns (who took the call) and David Clark, and long-term Shoal Bay resident Mike Shaw and Russel Williams. Mr Wall said, “We all had some experience in fencing and since we work together on the foreshore at home, it seemed natural to put our hands up to replace fences lost in the fires.
“We joined six other teams in Cassilis, each comprising 5-6 volunteers per team who liaised with property owners constructing fences. We were up at 6.00am and worked from 8.00am until 3.30pm over five days. All told 114 volunteers put in 532 volunteer days covering 39 properties. “We were accommodated in a local hall and other volunteers prepared meals – 565 to be exact – over the five days. “It was physically demanding but rewarding to know our work was highly valued.” Cassilis is in the Upper Hunter, 270 km north-west of Shoal Bay.
q Wandy McIntyre-Leake with her beloved XJC. Photo by Square Shoe Photography $300,000. The atmosphere was summed up nicely by Paddy Twohill, President of PSFM, “This has been a great day, very sophisticated, relaxed and unhurried, it has been a pleasure providing music for this event.” Wandy McIntyre-Leake from Bundalong brought her beautiful 41-year-old XJC with only 75,000 kms on the
clock. She told News Of The Area, “This is the first time the car has been in the rain, and we travelled 120 kms through torrential rain to get here.” PS Koalas, Marine Rescue PS and PS Classic Automobile Association said it was a fantastic event. Enquiries, support and interest exceeded any
expectation. All local volunteer groups insisted that News Of The Area extend a hearty thank you to the organisers for such an amazing event and to the community for their genuine interest, support and concern. Port Stephens locals thank the 48th Jaguar National Rally for a truly magnificent event.

Motorfest Donations By Margie TIERNEY ORGANISERS of the recent Motorfest weekend are still on a high after their most successful event ever. Motor Clubs from Port Stephens and Newcastle joined the 45 clubs which converged on the Yamba Street Oval in Hawks Nest. “The people came from South East Queensland through to Melbourne, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Gunnedah and Port Stephens, it was the best ever in terms of the range and diversity of vehicles,” Phil Hoare, Secretary of the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest Motor Club said. Last Sunday the Motor Club members gathered at the Rural Fire Station in Tea Gardens for a barbecue lunch and a presentation ceremony for the local beneficiaries. This year the Motor
club had $9,000 in cheques to share between the local Surf Club, the Tea Gardens/ Pindimar Rural Fire Brigade and the Community Bus. “The response from local businesses that provide us with sponsorship was remarkable,” Motor Club Secretary Phil Hoare told News Of The Area. “We only donate to local beneficiaries who don’t get money from the government,” Club President Juergen Seil said. As for Treasurer Graham Kelly, he’s already looking to next year. “We had 355 entries this year and there was still room on the oval, so maybe 400 is in sight.” “We had 70 sponsors who gave us cash cheques and gift donations.” As you’d expect the Surf Club, Community Bus and
Rural Fire Brigade were thrilled with their donations. “We’d like an automatic reel on the truck, so you only need one person not three,” the Brigade’s Ranald Mackay
investment, then you come to me and I will help you,” Serge Boussuge said. Serge came to Australia from Paris with his wife Andree and their first child Veronique. Their second child Valerie was later born in Australia. Four years ago Mr Boussuge lost his beautiful wife to cancer and at the young age of 84, feels it is the right time to share his love of art with the wider community again. Mr Boussuge ran various Art Galleries throughout his life and travelled the world with the full exhibition from Australian Aboriginal Artist, Biggibilla. Boussuge opened the
famous “Galerie Des Arts”, his own private gallery in Montague St, Balmain. During the twelve years of ownership, the gallery was the “place to be seen” if you were a high flying Sydney socialite. Serge will conduct his exhibition as professionally as he did with the ones he exhibited all over the world. “Young people see art with different eyes, I love asking them what do you see, are you looking at the colour or the line and then I go on to explain the history of each painting as I watch their faces light up,” Serge added. You can call Serge Boussuge for more information on 0451 040 500.

Motorfest has given out $105,000 to local not for profit organisations. “From the feedback we received, everyone had a great time,” Juergen said.
International Art Exhibition For Sale
By Jewell DRURY CORLETTE resident and inspirational Frenchman Serge Boussuge has been an Art dealer and Connoisseur since 1976. He has held exhibitions with Australian Art all over the world including France, Belgium, USA, Canada and Japan. His current Art Collection contains works of many well known artists including Norman Lindsay, Jules Michel, Biggibilla, Judith White, Eva Hannah and Helene Lee. Friday night March 31 at 7.30pm will see the private collection available for purchase at the Chris Walkling Theatre, St Philip’s Christian College, Salamander Bay. Living in Paris, 27-yearsold Serge’s love of art led him to an Art Auction House where one of the largest art collections in the world was housed. The owner of a local Art Gallery noticed Serge’s keen eye for art and asked him to be a buyer for his gallery. “People ask me what is the best buy and I tell them you buy what you love most,” Mr Boussuge told Bay News Of The Area. “If you want to buy for an

Online Court Bookings SOLDIERS Point Tennis Club has become the first in NSW to install an online court booking system, with access granted by a pin code at the gate. After some trial installations in Victoria, Soldiers Point put up its hand to install the system as soon as it was ready. Tennis Australia
approved and subsidised the installation, in order to give club members and visitors easier access to the courts. During holiday times especially, visitors were previously limited in getting keys to times when the nearby holiday park was open, but now they can gain access any day between 7am and 10pm, with lights being
turned on and off by the system as necessary. Club President Paul McQuarrie said, “This is a great innovation, both to our members and visitors.” “They can now go online any day, night or weekend, book and pay online and come down for some healthy family fun. We even have loan racquets and balls there that
are free to use,” Mr McQuarrie said. Club members can use the courts for free in daytime, with only a small fee for lights at night. To book a tennis court at Soldiers Point, go to tennis. com.au/soldierspoint.
