Koala trees planted in Anna Bay By Charlie ELIAS

WITH the national aged care sector making the news for all the wrong reasons of late, it is refreshing to know that a Port Stephens facility is building closer community ties. Port Stephens Veterans & Citizens Aged Care Pty Ltd, trading as Harbourside Haven, currently operates aged services at three locations: Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay and Salamander Bay. Board chairman Gerry Mohan said plans to develop more self-care units at Salamander Bay were progressing well, while work continues as part of a major refurbishment of the Shoal Bay high care unit. “We are also considering a range of uses at the company’s expansive site in Anna Bay, off Trotters Road,” Mr Mohan said.

“We were recently approached by the Port Stephens Koala hospital members to use a section of this land for growing koala feed trees. “We reached a Memorandum of Understanding in regard to the number of trees, height, siting and irrigation in return for a peppercorn rent. “Last week a number of their volunteers

planted somewhere in the vicinity of 500 feed trees. We see the partnership as part of our commitment to a better environment.” Mr Mohan said that future plans for the site, zoned RU2, could include a day activity centre for Harbourside residents and staff. “The property is conveniently located between our facilities on the Tomaree and Tilligerry peninsulas. “We have outgrown our premises in Donald Street, so it makes sense

to move some of those operations to Anna Bay, as well as a proposed supervised play area. The ultimate goal is to establish a cultural area for the entire community. “This is all subject to council approval and we are currently in talks with the council planners.” Mr Mohan said an agreement had also been reached to erect an NBN tower close to the power poles near Trotters, and hoped that the existing community garden could be revitalised.

The project, which spanned two years, is

finally complete. The Brick and Block Layers Association provided a trainer, State Training Services liaised with all parties to help make the build a reality, and major sponsor business Valley Homes supplied the building materials and technical drawings needed for the build. METTA Henderson’s hats are up there with royalty. Metta participated in the international Hats for Happiness event to raise funds during Mental Awareness Week. She is honoured to have her hats sit alongside Queen Elizabeth’s milliner Phillip Treacy’s work, as well as many other notorious worldwide milliners. The milliner and fashion construction designer holds a diploma in fashion design and technology. Several mini hats and hat blocks have been created and donated to raise much needed funds. The hats are

Metta is a born and bred Bay local, having attended Anna Bay Public School as well as Nelson Bay Central, and Raymond Terrace High Schools. As an artist, Metta is interested in different mediums, so along with millinery and fabric work, you’ll find Metta in the woodwork room at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre. I recently got married and my friend bought me a beautiful set of champagne glasses. The problem is, they are the exact set that I gave her for her wedding three years ago. At first I thought it was just coincidence, but then I found the note I had written, tucked between the lining of the packaging, wishing her everlasting happiness. Mrs BS, Tea Gardens Dear Mrs BS, I can see why this would upset you, but let’s look at it from a realistic perspective. When you get married, you inevitably get two or more of the same thing. You know the drill: three rice cookers, two sets of cutlery, three irons (how rude), seven sets of dinner plates, and on it goes. It is ludicrous, but somehow more socially acceptable than those brides who have a gift registry at an upmarket store where the only thing you can afford is a gold-plated toothpick. Or how about the couples who make up catchy little jingles that say having you at the wedding is more than enough, but then the small print comes, complete with their ‘we’re going to Europe’ account number.

Covering the central region of Port Stephens: Lemon Tree Passage, Medowie, Tanilba Bay, Salt Ash, Williamtown, Oyster Cove, Ferodale to Twelve Mile Creek. Some of stories in this paper... • Medowie ladies join The Ravens • Community preschool safe for another 30 years • Tree concerns for Lemon Tree Passage woman • Medical Miracle for Anne Lake

Perhaps what you should do is invite your friend around for some friendly champers, cheese and crackers, and when you are both a bit sloshed, you can tell her just how much her message meant to you. Then read your note, in a dramatic tone, with lots of sideways glances and flamboyant arm movements, lifting and lowering the champagne glass with its beautiful hollow stem, which your friend will hopefully be astute enough to recognise as a metaphor for your friendship. If not, at least you know that the present is in good taste.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

The Melbourne Cup of camel riding is here By Charlie ELIAS

PORT Stephens has produced a range of cultural and sporting heroes over the years – it can now add to that list Uncle Bob, Anna Bay’s newest camel racing champion. Uncle Bob is a product of the Sahara Trails stable of camels [and horses] that have been racing across NSW and Queensland in various carnivals for some five years. Last month Uncle Bob, with Gulgong-based jockey Chontelle Jannese on board, took out ‘the Melbourne Cup of camel riding’, the coveted Tara Cup in spectacular style. “It was a pretty amazing win for the team,” said the 34-year-old jockey who has

been riding for the Sahara Trails camel owners Diane Gooley and Rodney Sansom for four years. “There were six starters in the Cup final run over 600m and because Uncle Bob is a very assertive camel I let him sit in his favourite

position, on the outside rail, which allowed him to sprint home in the straight and first past the post. “It was particularly pleasing to win in front of a crowd of around 6,000 cheering fans.” Uncle Bob is one of

approximately 50 camels trained by Gooley and Sansom at their premises in both Anna Bay and Woodberry. Ms Gooley said the camel race fraternity was growing each year, with a close-knit group of trainers competing in major events at Tara,

In June, she was accepted for an internship at ABC Newcastle from a field of over 160 people. Simone will commence this internship in October. Simone was then selected by Southern Cross Austereo this month, as one of fourteen of 160 applicants to go to their media bootcamp in Newcastle. At the boot camp, participants took part in in-studio news reads, mock breakfast shows and reading advertisements on air. Simone should find out within the week if she was also successful in gaining a position with the Southern

Cross Austereo Network. Simone started interning at radio station 105.3 NewFM this week, working with the breakfast producer to produce content for their daily show, which she is hopeful will turn into a full time job. Simone told News Of The Area, “I am extremely thankful to N.O.T.A. for giving me my first opportunity to be a paid journalist at just 19 years of age.” “I’m excited for my future, and hope to do some form of content production or media law.” “I am not completely set on where I want to end up, I just want to take all of the opportunities as they come,” she said. Niland rates his chance By Charlie ELIAS

DESPITE being listed number two on the Central Ward ticket, long time Medowie resident Ben Niland rates his chances of winning a seat on Port Stephens Council when voters got to the polls on 9 September. The outspoken opponent to the Newcastle-Port Stephens merger proposal has joined aspiring mayor and incumbent councillor Steve Tucker’s team for the elections. Mr Niland, who was recognised for his service to the Medowie community in the Port Stephens Annual Awards for 2017, is expected

to take his seat on the council if Mr Tucker’s bid for popularly elected mayor is successful. A proud local and volunteer community worker, Mr Niland has a long history in Port Stephens, moving to Raymond Terrace as a nine year old in 1989. “I have owned property in Medowie since 1994 and have lived there except for a period in the mid-2000s when my work took me to regional NSW and to work with the UN in Afghanistan,” he said. “I was part of the steering committee of the Medowie Sports and Community Club which had a DA and funding approved in 2016

on

and I have also served on various council and sporting committees in Medowie.” Mr Niland holds bachelor and masters level civil engineering qualifications, and has worked in teams that have delivered about $1.5 billion of roads in Australia and abroad, including as the project manager of the Anna Bay to Bobs Farm upgrade of Nelson Bay Road. “I am supporting Steve Tucker’s bid because he is a steady hand and considers all points of view. He has some big ideas but doesn’t forget the important things for residents such as parks, footpaths, roads and rubbish.”

Doohan Keen for Second Stint

By Charlie ELIAS

CENTRAL Ward councillor Chris Doohan, fresh from his first term on Port Stephens Council, says he is better for the experience and eager for a second stint. Having ridden on the coat tails of popularly elected mayor Bruce MacKenzie in the 2012 election, Mr Doohan is relishing the opportunity to head his own Independent ticket that also includes excouncillor Shirley O’Brien and Medowie’s Peter Smith. The former RAAFie turned BAE employee says he is sick and tired of the naysayers and refuses to acknowledge those who talk of a dysfunctional council. “We may have had some dysfunctional councillors, but this council achieved great things and has a financial record to be proud of,” the 47-year-old from Medowie said. “In the past five years we have battled an unprecedented super storm, floods, bushfires and the proposed merger and emerged in good shape financially. “Having said that, there is still much to do, and it is for this reason, coupled with a

q Chris Doohan is vying for a second stint. fear of what is driving some other candidates, I am back for another shot.” Mr Doohan said some of the unfinished business included the Medowie Sports and Community Club, Medowie Rugby’s plans to overhaul Boyd Oval clubhouse, and the draft Birubi Point Aboriginal Place master plan. “During this next term I will focus on roads, paths and parks across the entire ward

from Boat Harbour/Anna Bay through the Tilligerry peninsula to Medowie. “I have been out doorknocking the area and roads and footpaths remain a priority for many residents. “Of course costings and a harmony between the three wards needs to be taken into account, but it is my intention to chip away at these core issues for the benefit of the entire community.”

East Ward ALP team takes a stand By Charlie ELIAS THE Labor Party has opted for three diverse candidates with wide experience in civic, social and community affairs to stand in East Ward at the 9 September council elections. Mining and health representative David Simm, who has resided in Corlette for seven years and joined the ALP 12 years ago, will lead the team. He will be supported by longtime Soldiers Point resident Roz Armstrong, who has a background in the disability sector, and tireless volunteer community worker Jim Morrison, of Corlette. Mr Simm said that the behaviour of the current councillors and the lack of transparency of the previous council had prompted him to take a stand. “This is the first time I have ever stood for election and it is because I want to see change,” Mr Simm said. “The people of Nelson Bay need certainty on issues such as CBD building height limits and zonings and my experience representing the people will be invaluable. “I want to see the Tomaree peninsula as a vibrant tourist hub while listening to the

needs of the residents.” For Ms Armstrong, a businesswoman who works as a support worker for people living with disabilities, it has been 34 years since she last stood for council elections. “I was number two on John Nell’s ticket in 1983. I remember the debate over the tall building study of the mid-1980s and thinking how this is just the thin edge of the wedge,” she said. “Those concerns are now

becoming a reality. I would like to see the road along the Little Salamander shops be turned into one-way and better access to the Soldiers Point boat ramp.” First timer Mr Morrison, a regular volunteer at the Tastes of the Bay and Bluewater country music festivals, said he would like to see the establishment of a performing arts centre in the Bay and better water access facilities for the disabled.

THE Wanda Beach Pharmacy has come a long way since opening its doors three decades ago – and it owes much of its success to its loyal customers. Owner and pharmacist Sandra Toth said the secret to her success in business is simple: ‘treat everyone as part of the family’. “We pride ourselves on delivering good old fashioned customer service and going out of our way to help,” Ms Toth said. “We have been able to build a strong rapport with the community through services such as pick-up and delivery, in and after hours. “These are just some of the reasons we have been able to trade successfully for 30 years in Port Stephens as an independent pharmacy.” Ms Toth said that the pharmacy, located on Soldiers Point Road in the old Salamander shopping strip, employed five staff including well-known pharmacist Kerry Schiemer, who has worked in the Bay for many years. “We offer a wide range of products and services such as the Webster pack, which makes life easier for people to manage their medicine doses and timelines. “We also stock diabetes supplies and do home medication reviews and

medicine checks.” Ms Toth said the pharmacy would again this year be participating in Stroke Awareness Week (410 September) by offering a free service targeting those people who tend to avoid trips to their doctor. “We can organise blood pressure checks free of charge with no bookings required. Even the fittest people can have high blood

pressure and be at risk of suffering a stroke.” Wanda Beach Pharmacy also has a giftware store, featuring a range of gifts all year round, as well as for important dates such as birthdays, anniversaries, Father’s and Mother’s days and of course Christmas and New Year. The pharmacy is open six days a week (closed Sunday).

To hear from residents about the real issues they experience when dealing with Council

PORT Stephens Council is calling on residents to share their experiences of dealing with Council as part of its effort to become a customer-first organisation. The feedback will be used to shape Council’s new Customer First Framework, which will see improvements made across the entire organisation. Stephen Crowe, Council’s Communication Section Manager, says Council is dedicated to raising the level of service ratepayers experience. “Council is working towards delivering significant improvements

in how we deal with customers and deliver services to our community,” Mr Crowe said. “We want to hear from residents about the real issues they experience when dealing with Council – not just our Customer Relations team, but across all the 52 business services provided by Council. “Whether it’s the worker fixing the pothole, the Children’s Services team or the Library, we want to know how the people of Port Stephens think we can improve their customer experience with Council,” he said. Mr Crowe says getting feedback from the

community is a crucial part of the process of becoming a customer-first organisation. “We’re after the truth. It’s only by confronting our shortfalls that Council will be able to make real improvements,” Mr Crowe said. “The survey will take just five minutes, but will make a valuable contribution to the future direction of Council’s Customer First Framework,” he said. Council Survey closes today

PORT Stephens will get its first playground for children with a disability if East Ward candidates Jaimie Abbott and Ryan Palmer get their way. Salamander Bay mum Michelle Bokodi, whose fouryear-old son Isaac suffers from multiple physical and intellectual disabilities, including autism, approached the pair in the hope of raising awareness of the plight of disabled children. Ms Bokodi said the area was in desperate need of an all-inclusive playground, similar to the outdoors areas at Speers Point and Mt Isa, and that she had the support of other mums on the Tomaree peninsula. “Isaac enjoys visiting playgrounds, but unfortunately there is nothing in Port Stephens that caters for children with disabilities,” Ms Bodoki said. “The area needs a playground that is fenced off, that is easily accessible by wheelchair and is safe.

“I would also like to see a visual board for those children who have delayed language abilities.” Candidate Ms Abbott said it was high time Port Stephens looked seriously at providing a communitybased playground with access to all children including the disabled. “A lot of children with disabilities have no concept of danger and, like Isaac, they abscond with great speed and no warning so a fenced area is needed,” Ms Abbott said. “I would like to see a park suitable for all abilities and ages, featuring shade, seating and undercover areas, as well as disability play equipment that is wheelchair friendly and inclusive.” Mr Palmer said that Corlette Playground in Corlette Point Road would be an ideal location. He estimated a cost of between $80,000 and $100,000, “a small cost to pay for a much-needed community facility”.

PORT STEPHENS Eight cash prizes totalling $1100. $10 fee for first entry & $5 for other entries. 2000 word limit on any subject. No entry form needed.

Entries to be typed and double spaced. Closing date 30 Sept. 2017

High Tea Raises Needed Funds By Heather SHARP

DIGNITY was the theme of a recent high tea held at Soldier’s Point. Over 50 people attended the charity event, raising money for Share The Dignity, a group that aims to ensure that every woman in Australia has access to sanitary products. Ms Keely Cotter, from

the Williamtown RAAF base, organised the high tea, raising an impressive $1805 on the day from a combination of raffle tickets and entry price. In addition, in excess of 160 packages of sanitary products were donated, going towards the aim of ensuring that women who are not in a financially strong position do not have to have the added burden of not using hygienic products.

Share The Dignity is an organisation that has gained an increased profile in recent years, and many workplaces offer drop off points to receive regular donations. Ms Cotter has collection points at the RAAF Base and Anytime Fitness Salamander Bay until the end of August. When asked what it was like to see so many people supporting the high tea, Ms Cotter told News Of The

afternoon event were from the Williamtown RAAF Base, keen to support a fellow member’s fundraising efforts. Ms Lia Ross from Petit Fours High Tea provided the catering for the event. Ms Cotter said she was motivated to hold the charity event after hearing about Share the Dignity through her sister-in-law’s post on Facebook.

She said, “I was shocked to read about women and young girls who were forced to use paper towels or toilet paper when they had their period.” “There were even stories of young girls having to miss school when they had their period because their mum couldn’t afford sanitary products.”

15th Longriders family fun day By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Longriders CMC charity bike show and family fun day is rolling back into town. In its 15th year, the family fun day will take place at the Tomago Bowling and Sports Club on 9 September. With a growing number of Medowie and Tilligerry members, the Longriders motorcycle club are well known around Port Stephens for their annual family fun day, where they

fund raise for a new charity each year. This year, the Longriders have chosen a worthy cause to support: Rush Youth Mentoring. Rush Mentoring supports local high schools by placing a significant role model in a young person’s life. The volunteer mentor supports the young person with social, emotional and in some cases academic support so that they can achieve their full potential, through weekly sessions. The mentors are dedicated men and women aged over 18 years old, from all walks of life. They are willing to build

a relationship of trust and will encourage young people to achieve their personal best while providing support to negotiate life’s challenges. Rush Mentoring does not receive government assistance or funding to run their program, so subsequently rely on the kindness of community groups to help them to continue the wonderful job they do for young people. The day will commence at 11am and run through until around 4pm. A family friendly atmosphere is promised, with plenty of activities for the kids as well as the older kids.

Elvis the mechanical bull will be there, with prizes up for grabs, as well as face painting, jumping castles, a petting zoo and pony rides. Budge, from Longriders CMC told News Of The Area, “We are looking forward to another fantastic year, with something for everyone, and raising lots of funds for a really worthy cause.” “We have 13 bike show categories for the bikes this year, raising it from 10 last year, with a people’s choice for the cars.” “Everybody is welcome to come along and spend the day catching up with old friends you might not see from year to year, and all for a great cause,” he said.

Parks Depot at Medowie. “Some 3,000 plants will be provided to the groups each year for free based on operational cost savings from the change in service delivery.” Mayor MacKenzie said that the $100,000 per year in savings would mean that ratepayers’ funds could be put back into parks and gardens maintenance. The Ngioka Centre offers off-street parking, wheelchair access, external undercover work areas, kitchen facilities, activity rooms, casual hire, and plant sales.

THE Ngioka Centre in Nelson Bay, a purpose built nursery for people with disabilities, has been given a reprieve. The centre, which according to mayor Bruce MacKenzie was losing an estimated $100,000 a year, will continue to operate under the services of the NDIS. “Council has decided to change the way disability services and native plant propagation are delivered from the Ngioka Centre,” Mayor MacKenzie said. “The changes were necessary to stop the financial

losses.” He said that Endeavour Group, who have been operating from the centre for a number of years and are an NDIS registered disability service provider, would coordinate all disability activities as from September 2017. This is a huge win for people with disabilities as it ensure a high-level of care and opportunities for clients delivered from the centre. “Council’s parks and gardens team and volunteers will coordinate the growing of native plants for the Tidy Town, Landcare and Parks and Reserves groups and the

Chef Ben Way of Little Beach Boathouse said, “The decision to have their fish farm here in Port Stephens is very exciting for me as a chef and business owner and also a credit to the region.” “After receiving initial samples direct from the first release of produce I can firmly say this product is first class.” “Sustainable aquaculture is imperative to the future of the fishing industry and Huon are one of the leaders in this field,” he said.

David Whyte of Huon Aquaculture told News Of The Area, “We currently have two pens in the lease and are able to increase this to 12 pens.” “An additional two pens will be installed in the next two months.” “The pens are secured by 53 two tonne anchors and can be moved within the lease site so that they don’t sit over any one part of the seabed for an extended period of time,” he said.

THE Department of Fisheries and Huon Aquaculture enterprise in Providence Bay harvested the first Yellowtail Kingfish from the enterprise coinciding with the Port Stephens Love Seafood festival. Locals may have noticed the Huon Aquaculture work boat Omaha at Nelson Bay Marina. The Omaha has capacity to lift the sea pen mooring grid for inspection and maintenance, including removal of natural fouling on grid lines. This maintenance is likely to assist with buoyancy of the grid buoys meaning that they will sit higher and be more visible on the surface. Marine fauna monitoring is constant, with dolphins being the predominant fauna recorded in the last four months. Community Celebrates Golf Club By David BIRSS

CELEBRATIONS at Nelson Bay Golf Club over the past week marked the official opening of the new clubhouse. Following the catastrophic fire that destroyed the previous facilities, the club has operated from demountables. The new clubhouse has exceeded everyone’s expectations with “worth the wait”, “iconic”, “stunning” and “brilliant” being some of the comments expressed by members and visitors. The week saw a series of events to acknowledge the support of all stakeholders over the past 24 months. Monday, Tuesday

and Wednesday recognised the different categories of playing members. On Thursday, the club’s directors hosted lunch for the patrons, foundation plus life members who had held 40 plus years continuous membership. Friday’s lunch was to acknowledge and thank the business partners for their continuing support together with representatives from community organisations that are supported by the club. Sunday’s event, a Family Fun Day, and open to all, was dedicated to the social members and members of the community. Children’s entertainment, kangaroo encounter tours, barbecue and golf clinics were among the activities.

The dinner on Saturday evening was the cornerstone of the week’s activities. The ABC’s sports commentator, Gerry Collins, was the MC for the evening. The guest speakers were Paterson MP Meryl Swanson, Port Stephens MP Kate Washington, and councillor Steve Tucker, representing Bruce MacKenzie. The opening ceremony, cutting the ribbon, was performed by life members Brian Diemar and Margaret Sproule. Then the wait was over. The speeches acknowledged that the clubhouse with its “wow” factor was not just a new home for the members, but a major asset to the community, acting as a social hub for years to come.

King of the Box By Marian SAMPSON

THE King of the Box is a unique surfing contest that attracted more than 80 of Australia’s best to beautiful Box Beach at Shoal Bay. King of The Box has hosted some of Australia’s best surfers including Jackson Baker, Ryan Callinan and Jesse Adam (Merewether), Chris Michalak (Port Stephens) and Jamie Skillin (Central Coast).

1

Surfers travelled from Ulladulla and the Gold Coast to be a part of King of the Box 2017. There were plenty of contenders taking on the waves on the short breaks to see if 2017 was their year to be King of the Box. A huge crowd braved the cold to witness the best semis and finals ever seen in the history of the event. Nic Squires and Mitch

Dawkings went blow for blow with Squires squeaking past Mitch to claim the title. “I have a long history with the wave,” Squires said. Mitch Dawkings wooed the crowd with his positioning and deep tube rides, but Squires’ ballistic backhand was too strong in the end. The junior finals was taken out by local surfer Josh Stretton.

3

Brent “Red Dawg” Symes won the Legends expression session. Contest director Teza McKenna told News Of The Area, “Box Beach is one of the most unique wedges in the world because the waves

break very close to the shore.” “We have perfect waves with good swell for the competition.” “The natural amphitheatre creates a punchy left-hand wedge that is suited to deep tubes and huge airs, which is

exactly what we had for King of the Box, with Box Beach protected from the gale force winds,” he added. The 2017 King of the Box was another resounding success; organisers are talking about a bigger and better event in 2018.

Staff and Students Steal the Show SOLDIERS Point Public School is overflowing with creativity, from its teachers, through to its student body. A trio of talented teachers this year wrote their own play for the school to turn into a production to showcase this wonderful creativity. Rachel Wagland, Assistant Principal, was one of these creative brains, and told News Of The Area, “Jenny Dobbie, Jeff Gibson and I put our heads together to write our play ‘Game of Crowns’, in an effort to create something unique for our school to present.” “Writing our own play gave us not only the added bonus of not having the high cost of royalties with an existing play, but it gave us the freedom to include things that were relevant to our school and community, and things happening in our world at this time.” The show’s story focused on the Pointer Family Circus, and the adventure to find their stolen icon, a Crown. Detectives, clowns, dancing bears, a fearless leading lady and comical characters galore made for a wonderful collection of student personalities coming together to create vibrant characters. The entire school body contributed to the show in some way, with over 40 cast members, six backstage

crew, more than 50 in the choir and dance group, and many more providing artistic contributions for props and sets. Ms Wagland, who also directed the show, said, “The

highlight of directing was witnessing the growth in confidence in the children, as they discovered their talent, and we helped them to nurture this talent to get to the child’s full potential.”

q Beau Hill and Gus Adnam.

“We did not know that one of the children could sing like she could, and lots of people thought she was miming, she was so good.” “Not even her parents knew she could sing like this, so it was exciting to witness these discoveries, as well as working with the children out of the classroom context,” she said. Hunter Jones, who played one of the lead roles as Detective Roger Dodgerson, told News Of The Area, “I really enjoyed the acting and being on stage.” “We spent a long time rehearsing and learning our lines; we were nervous, but we relaxed and really enjoyed it.” Ms Wagland said, “To see the effect it has on the kids, the smiles and pride their family feel and the joy our community got from the show makes it all worth it.” “We are extremely proud.”

Ready to ride q Emma Stritch is taking the challenge.

By Rachael VAUGHAN EMMA Stritch is a woman on a mission. In October, Emma will be taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids’ cancer. Right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in Australia, with 600 children diagnosed with cancer every year. Sadly, statistically three die every week. Emma told News Of The Area that she is motivated to do the challenge for two reasons. “Firstly, I’ve done a few charity rides and runs over the last few years and it’s an amazing feeling knowing you’re doing a little bit to help raise money for the cause, which in this case is cancer research for kids.” “Every bit counts.” “Secondly, I’m doing this for me too, because it is a personal challenge for me,” she said. Emma loves cycling and says that she has made some

wonderful friends since she started. Emma rides with a dedicated group of female cyclers, aptly name the ‘Pushy Ladies’. They mostly ride for fun, encourage each other to have fun and improve themselves. Emma told News Of The Area, “Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.” “So doing this challenge, riding and raising funds to support the Children’s Medical Research Institute, will help them to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer.” “If you have a spare few dollars, please consider supporting my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve,” she said. “Together, we can save little lives.” Emma’s challenge page can be found at https:// greatcyclechallenge.com.au/ Riders/EmmaStritch.
