By Marian SAMPSON THERE’S no doubt that no matter where you go in Australia you will find some families struggling to put food on the table. Winter is a hard time, bills increase and for pensioners, or those with large families, it can be a difficult time to make ends meet. Food Care at Salamander Bay is run by The Rock Church and offers cheap groceries and free fruit, vegetable and bread to those who need it most. All you need to show is your health care card or pension card to access the service. Janelle Foster, who coordinates the program, told

News Of The Area, “No one leaves Food Care without food.” “Volunteers and those who attend the weekly Food Care Program also gain companionship and build relationships which are important.” “Food Care is not a hand out, it’s about giving people that need it a leg up,” she said. Most single pensioners are struggling to pay for a one-bedroom unit, cover the bills and then put food on the table. Bread is donated by Woolworths and local bakeries including the Seabreeze Bakery, while fruit and vegetables are donated by Oz Harvest, and some

South Tomaree Association on urban growth

FROM Page 1

Association told News Of The Area, “We are passionate about our beautiful area and want to see it grow in a positive and sustainable way; we are not

against development but feel any developments need to take the local flora and fauna into account.” “We are currently working on a few different projects, including the completion of the cycleway between Clark Street and Boat Harbour for the safety of children riding between Anna Bay Public School and their homes; and a cycleway

from James Patterson Street to Nelson Bay Road as this is a very busy and dangerous place to walk.” “The association is also concerned about the consultation in place regarding the Birubi Point Aboriginal Place Management Plan, Master Plan,” she said. Steve Bernasconi of Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “There

will be a drop-in session at Birubi Surf Life Saving Club on Saturday 12 August from 10-2pm where members of the community can drop in, meet people, ask questions and learn about Aboriginal culture.” “Written submissions on the plan will be accepted via Council’s website,” he said. The Association would like to hear from the wider

community on these and other projects that need to be worked on. They are encouraging people to visit the Facebook page and engage with the group. The committee believes that now is the time for action, and are encouraging locals to get behind the association’s work to create better spaces in and around Anna Bay.

By Margie TIERNEY PROGRESS is being made following the recent talks between the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Community and Port Stephens Ferry Service. Malcolm Anderson, Business Advisor to Ferry Operator Adrian Thompson, met last week with MidCoast Council’s Daniel Aldridge to discuss changes to the timetable signage at the Tea Gardens Wharf. “We’re going to get the signage sorted so that anyone walking here can understand it and what we’re doing on any given day,” Malcolm Anderson told News Of The Area. Currently the sign is a mishmash of blocked out phone numbers from operators no longer servicing the Tea Gardens run. It also states that ‘Ferries depart every half hour 7 days a week’. MidCoast Council’s Daniel Aldridge says there’s no impediment to a new

sign as far as they are concerned. “Approval is already in place,” Mr Aldridge said. “Anyone who sees the sign will be able to work out how to contact us,” Mr Anderson said. “We will link that to the available technology that everyone has access to these days, Facebook, our website and mobile phone.” “We know how important the ferry is to the whole community not just the tourism industry.” Mr Anderson says the new signage is a priority and will hopefully be in place within weeks along with a new timetable. As for the ferries no longer stopping at the Hawks Nest Wharf, Mr Anderson said, “We have no way of knowing who’s going to be there, it adds to the timetable, it’s not a simple pick up.” “There are issues we are still trying to resolve around Hawks Nest.”

Cruise Ship Business Set to Boom By Marian SAMPSON

THE government investment of over 12 million dollars into the Newcastle Cruise Ship Terminal is good news for the Bay. While we will not be seeing the Queen Mary sail through between Tomaree and Yacaaba heads anytime soon, large liners will be sailing past and docking in Newcastle. With this comes the opportunity for Port Stephens to sell itself to the cruise ships’ passengers.

Royal Caribbean’s vessel Explorer of Seas will call into Newcastle’s Port in February 2019 carrying 3,900 passengers per visit. Most passengers disembark to explore the regions around the Port and that spells a big opportunity for Port Stephens and the wider Hunter. Council’s Port Stephens Economic Profile says that the cruise ship terminal will increase international visitors and day trippers by an estimated 14.5 percent, which is good news for Port Stephens tourism businesses and their employees. Janelle Gardner, Council’s Tourism and Events

Coordinator told News Of The Area that Destination Port Stephens and Port Stephens Council work closely with Cruise Hunter to leverage opportunities for day tours to Port Stephens, while individual business operators have already developed partnerships with various cruise tour providers. “As the cruise market grows, so too will the opportunities for additional businesses in Port Stephens.” “Destination Port Stephens will continue to pursue these opportunities on behalf of Port Stephens and update industry as they arise,” she said.

I was discreetly breastfeeding my baby in the food court at the local shopping centre, when I was approached by a security guard. He directed me to a room designated for nursing mothers. I asked if it was against the centre’s policy to breastfeed and he said no, but if someone complained I would have to move on. I was too embarrassed to argue. Mrs HK, Salamander Bay Dear Mrs HK, Many revolting, socially unacceptable acts occur in a food court, but breastfeeding is not one of them. First the sights: There is more exposed skin in a food court than you can poke a soggy chip at. Muffin tops rolling out of trackie-daks, breasts leaping from too-tight tank tops, bottom cracks smiling, tuckshop arms flapping . . . you name the body part and it’s there in all its shameless glory. So how a breast (hidden by a baby’s head and a strategically placed bunny-rug) can be an issue, is beyond the bounds of logic. Then there’s the sounds: Toddlers screaming into their kebabs. Uncouth individuals coughing all over your salmon and avocado sushi roll without so much as a sorry. There’s the glug-glug of people mindlessly shoving fist-sized helpings of unrecognisable food in the general direction of their mouths, gluttons with no sense of delicacy or decorum, the din of futile chatter, zippers straining against beer guts, gravy sludge slurped by an unwatched child. How can the delicate sound of a baby having her 10am feed be heard over the ruckus? It seems to me, that the natural, unsullied undertaking of giving a baby a healthy and nutritious meal straight from mother nature is perhaps just so far removed from the fusty, fetid, scraping, screeching environment of a food court, that they simply don’t know what to do with you. Or maybe the security guy was bottle fed.

Don’t be scammed at tax time

THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is urging all Australians to keep their personal information secure and to report any suspicious activity immediately this tax time. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson warns that identifying information like tax file numbers, bank account numbers or your date of birth are the keys to your identity, and can be used by scammers to break into your life if they are compromised. “We cannot stress this enough – your personal information must be treated like your bank PIN. If someone knew your PIN, they would have access to your hardearned income, and it’s the same with your personal information and tax return,” Ms Anderson said. “The ATO works really hard to maintain the highest levels of security, but if someone gets your personal information, they can use it to impersonate you and engage in fraudulent activity.” “More than one

thousand taxpayers reported their personal information had been compromised in June, up by 26 per cent from May, so we know it is a real problem at this time of year.” Ms Anderson said all reports of identity theft are taken seriously, with the ATO working directly with taxpayers when they suspect their identities have been stolen, misused or compromised. “We are committed to supporting victims of tax scams and tax crimes. If you think your tax file number has been stolen or compromised, you should contact our Client Identity Support Centre on 1800 467 033 right away,” Ms Anderson said. Ms Anderson said the best defence against scammers was keeping your information safe and knowing what to do if you are targeted. “You can’t be too careful when it comes to your personal details. If you are contacted by anyone purporting to be from the ATO and you have any doubts about whether it is legitimate, immediately hang up and get in touch with the ATO to

verify the call.” “Tell-tale signs include a caller threatening you with arrest or jail, aggressive or rude behaviour, or asking you to pay money into strange bank accounts or settle tax debts with things like gift cards or iTunes cards. We would never do this,” Ms Anderson said. “If something doesn’t sound right, you can always check your myGov account, ask your tax agent, or call us directly on 1800 008 540 to see if the contact is legitimate. Be especially wary if you’re asked to make a payment, make sure you only use one of the methods listed on our website.” For more information on scams, visit ato.gov.au/ scams For more information identity theft visit ato.gov. au/identitytheft To see a list of things the ATO may contact you about, visit ato.gov.au and search for ‘Current ATO SMS and email activities’.

Freshest Quality Seafood

Special Advertising FEATURE

and Stunning Views

By Marian SAMPSON FAMOUS for the amazing quality of its fresh seafood, the Rock Lobster Restaurant in Nelson Bay boasts a fantastic menu, wonderful views and contemporary atmosphere. The signature dish is definitely the impressive hot and cold seafood platter. On the menu you will also find a stunning king prawn and wonton stack, with crispy deep fried wontons layered generously with fresh king prawns, crispy lettuce and highlights of creamy avocado, drizzled with a dressing which makes for a perfect dish. The tasting plate offers diners a sampling of salt and pepper squid, fresh prawns, balmain bugs and smoked salmon served with a delicious Greek salad, and a selection of dipping sauces, perfect when teamed with a glass of champagne or wine. When it comes to fresh and local seafood, you simply can’t beat the selections on the menu at the Rock Lobster Restaurant. Local oysters grown in the

Bay are featured alongside fresh fish straight from the pristine waters of Port Stephens and its surrounds. Also on the menu are succulent steaks, tender chicken and a delicious vegetarian mushroom risotto as well as gluten-free options for diners with specific dietary requirements. An extensive wine list boasts boutique wines from the Cricket Pitch and Audrey Wilkinson ranges as well as favourites from Tyrrell’s Wines and a range of premium beers. Sit back and relax, take your time, enjoy your meal and the stunning views, watch the pelicans, or you may see dolphins frolicking as you enjoy one of the best seafood meals available anywhere in the Bay. Situated on the upper level of d’Albora Marinas at Nelson Bay, the Rock Lobster Restaurant is great for intimate dinners, casual lunches, celebrations and special occasions. Listen to the live music on the marina on the weekends and enjoy a crisp beer or wine selected to complement

the beautifully presented and delicious meals. The vibe in the Rock Lobster Restaurant is upbeat; you will enjoy the atmosphere of the freshly refurbished modern venue featuring a stunning photograph of the sunset that you can enjoy from the restaurant in the evenings. The friendly staff will be happy to assist you, nothing seems to be too much trouble. The restaurant has been under new ownership for two years and the owners, Megan and Graeme, have been making positive changes to the menu and decor since they took on the iconic business. Bay local Megan told News Of The Area, “We look forward to welcoming locals and visitors to Rock Lobster Restaurant, and hope that they enjoy our food.” “Diners have been telling us that they are really enjoying the quality of the food, the atmosphere, and the friendliness of our team.” “We give our chefs free range to be creative and this has added vibrancy to the menu and the specials board.”

Rotary Stamping Out Polio By Marian SAMPSON ROTARY Club of Salamander Bay, along with Rotarians from around the world, are on a mission to eradicate polio. It started in 1978 as a Rotary initiative and Rotary has been on the front foot in eradicating polio ever since, Rotary has been providing financial contributions, advocacy governments, the World Health Organisation,

UNICEF and the Gates Foundation. Polio cases are down 99.9 percent globally from 350,000 cases registered in 1988 to eight cases to date in 2017. However the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay’s Geoffrey Basser told News Of The Area, “Polio anywhere in the world is a risk everywhere in the world.” “Only the global

eradication of polio will ensure that no child ever again suffers its devastating effects,” he said. Rotary Clubs like Salamander Bay are part of the movement that is committed globally to reach every child by contributing $50 million per year over the next two years to see the end of polio,” he said. Three lifesaving drops of serum at 60 cents is all it

takes. Action is being taken locally by the Rotary Clubs of Port Stephens, who are raising funds to eradicate polio. The World’s Greatest Meal, a red- and gold-themed event, will be conducted at the Soldiers Point Bowling Club on 30 August.

Keynote speaker Susanne Rea of Cairns Sunrise Rotary will be there. With the help of Rotarians globally she has inspired and influenced the raising of US $8.5M over the last four to five years. Susanne now travels worldwide, speaking on the

need to support total polio eradication by 2018. Salamander Bay Rotary and its co-hosts will be delighted to have members of the community attend this event. Phone Geoffrey Basser on 0409820567 to find out more.

Area, “I remember un-pulling old jumpers which people had given to me so I could use the wool; now everyone knows what I do, I have plenty of wool to keep me going for a long time.” June is an amazing 99-year-old lady, who still holds a full, unrestricted driving license, got her first dental filling a few years ago, and, although she is starting to slow down with her crocheting, she has no intention of stopping any time soon. “Crochet has given me so much, it gives me a purpose each day,” she said. Initially starting with

Wrap With Love 18 years ago, knitting blankets for charity, June now enjoys crochet from home at Fingal Haven. Margaret McMillan, June’s friend and neighbour said, “June’s beanies have been sent to Scotland, Canada and New Zealand, she is also an accomplished potter, artist, and only gave up golf in her early 90s.” June’s crochet is available for sale at Shoal Bay Pharmacy with all proceeds going to RFS Fingal Bay. June would like to express her gratitude for the support, goodwill and fellowship of everyone at Fingal Haven.

Magical Mystery Tour By Marian SAMPSON

FIFTY-FOUR members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens set off on a ‘Christmas in July’ Mystery Bus Trip. Most were dressed for Christmas and there were lots of guesses about where they were all headed. First stop was Kurri Kurri Park for morning tea in the warm sunshine with the Big Kookaburra. Lots of photos were snapped with this impressive big bird. The journey continued through the always beautiful Hunter Valley to Drayton’s historic winery where the wine tasting was enthusiastically embraced while being entertained by cellar doorman, Daniel. Some very tasty drops and quite a few brown bags were carried back to the bus by members. Lunch was also enjoyed at Draytons and Steve persuaded Gwen Smith to lead the happy crew in singing some Christmas songs. It was then back on the coach and off to the Hunter Valley Gardens to stroll around the shops and have an ice cream and coffee. Last stop was at De Bortelli Winery for more tasting and purchasing. By now, some were ready for a little nap on the way

Rocking Kindness NSW Rocks is a new phenomenon sweeping the state and particularly popular with schoolkids and their parents. It began in the United States as an idea by one woman to spread some kindness and the craze is now gradually sweeping the globe. In Australia, it began in WA and has now caught on in the eastern states too. The idea is to paint small rocks, acrylics or permanent markers work best, and to safely hide them in parks or other outdoor locations. NSW Rocks operates via Facebook (called NSW Rocks), which explains the rules and what to do. It’s important to write the group name on the reverse, so people know which group the rock came from. When you have made your rock drop, you list it on the page so that others can then go hunting for them. Similarly, when you find some, you post them on the page so that the artist knows they have been found. You can choose to either keep them or hide them again. It’s a similar concept to Geocaching, which is also a worldwide trend. The idea behind the painted rocks is to foster a sense of kindness and of

Massive re-vamp for Pet Shop

BAYNews Of The Area

By Charlie ELIAS

THERE’S some exciting news for local pet owners and lovers – Port Stephens Pet Warehouse has undertaken a massive revamp, breaking new ground in quality and service. The one-stop pet store, which has been owned and operated by local businessman Brian Blake for more than 10 years, offers everything a pet owner needs. The massive warehouse stocks leading brands in a range of pet accessories, food, clothing, toys, bedding, collars and leads. There is also an array of birds (many hand-raised), reptiles and fish available, and in groundbreaking news the local business can now also offer a dog wash, in addition to pet grooming and styling. Mr Blake said he was excited to have Petz Palace open its doors adjacent to the Pet Warehouse in Shearwater Drive, Taylors Beach. “We are fortunate to have experienced pet groomer Maura Bandi available five days a week,” Mr Blake said. “The grooming business will complement our newly installed, do-it-yourself dog wash facility. “In addition to the warehouse revamp, this will provide the Port’s many pet owners some of the

What has not changed, however, is the excellent customer service that has become synonymous with Pet Warehouse. Mr Blake paid tribute to staff members Kate John, Lisa Steane and Maura, who have

more than 100 combined years of experience working with pets. “The staff are very knowledgeable and caring and are happy to provide customers with the best advice on products for their

Restaurant reopens at Golfie

By Charlie ELIAS

TWO years after fire swept through the Nelson Bay Golf Club and restaurant, the popular Bluewater Grill will reopen its doors this week. It has been a tough couple of years for Bluewater owners Will and Tanya Semmens, but they can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. “Working out of the makeshift clubhouse has been difficult, particularly the last 12 months … we had to sell our home,” Mr Semmens said. “But we can now move forward with confidence. We are looking forward to starting again. “We see the reopening in a brand new building as a great opportunity to build on the close relationship we have with our loyal customers and hope to attract a host of new ones. “We are extremely grateful to the local members who have stuck by us through these difficult times.” Diners will notice lots of changes with the décor and seating capacity, which has doubled from the current 60 to more than 120. The menu will feature modern Australian cuisine

and retains chef Tanya’s signature salt and pepper squid, along with family favourites such as beef cheeks and lambs fry. “There will also be a bigger emphasis on the café section with coffees and freshly homemade cakes,” Mr Semmens said. “In fact all our meals are made to order, using only fresh local produce.” The Bluewater will also cater for weddings, parties and conferences, along with golf groups, fundraisers and the like. Families will be made most welcome with the inclusion of a children’s play area strategically placed adjacent to the restaurant. Mr Semmens said that the restaurant employed up to 20 staff including chefs, waiters and kitchen hands, and that customer service remained a priority. The Bluewater Grill is open every day from 10am to 9pm and bookings are essential. The restaurant is situated in the newly built Nelson Bay Golf Club, in Dowling Street. In 2017, Dave was awarded the Port Stephens Medal for his work in the community which includes Waste as Art, Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network, Tomaree Youth Community Action and the Solace Garden. Dave is also a recipient of a Keep Australia Beautiful Award having been nominated by two different Tidy Towns Committees. Dave volunteers with the Port Stephens Suicide

Changemaker in World Hunger By Marian SAMPSON

ALICIA Cameron has been successful in her application to participate in The Hunger Project and Business Chicks 2018 Senegal Immersion Trip. This trip will see Alicia and other passionate business women help the women of Senegal rise above poverty. Alicia applied to participate knowing that she would meet amazing people and have to push herself outside her comfort zone. Alicia told News Of The Area, “I was so excited when they called to say I was accepted.” “I knew it was going to be hard work to raise the $10,000 in donations; these funds all go to the Hunger Project,” she said. “I pay my own way, so every cent raised will be making a real difference.” There will be 20 inspiring women on the trip and all of us will be working hard to support the work of the Hunger Project. A global not-for-profit organisation, The Hunger Project believes that the hungry themselves are the resource in ending hunger and poverty. They build leaders, in

Alicia will be selling wine packages with the help of First Creek Winery, holding an event at Little Beach Boathouse Bar on 22

September offering some mentoring sessions. The fundraising deadline is 15 December. All funds raised for the

makeshift sanitary pads. Port Stephens women are beneficiaries of the sanitary items collected by Share The Dignity. Scott Elsegood of Terry White Chemmart in Nelson Bay told News Of The Area, “This is a really important campaign; it’s a good thing,” he said. Rochelle Courtney was “appalled” and decided that “someone should do something – and that someone is me”. Every item collected is registered, sorted and sent to services that directly

support women and girls in need. From a handful of volunteers, there are now over 1000 volunteers throughout Australia, collecting from over 2,000 collection points across the country. Share the Dignity Founder Rochelle Courtenay said, “Access to sanitary items has been declared a human right by the United Nations, yet we know that in Australia there are thousands of women and girls who don’t have access to pads, tampons, menstrual

cups or period-proof underwear.” “Machine locations have been carefully considered with installations underway in low socioeconomic areas throughout Australia,” she said. “Placement in schools is a priority as research has shown that pupils are skipping school because they can’t afford or access basic sanitary products.” “Discreet placement of the vending machines will help remove the stigma and embarrassment of having to ask for sanitary

Drive to Support Women’s Dignity By Marian SAMPSON

SHARE the Dignity’s sanitary drive will run throughout August. Share the Dignity was founded in 2015 by Rochelle Courtenay after she discovered that thousands of Australian women cannot access sanitary products when they need them. Homeless women, women in domestic violence shelters and women and girls in dire poverty, have to improvise using paper towels, newspapers, socks, even dried leaves to create

products, thereby assisting girls to attend school when menstruating,” she said. Bay drop off points for sanitary items throughout August are Joblink Plus, Terry White Chemmart, Australian Hearing and White Lady funerals. Just head to the website and find your local collection points at https://www. sharethedignity.com.au/ collection-points.html.

Stu Makes 100

By Geoff WALKER

‘FRUSTRATION’ seems to be the buzzword at the Mallabula Panthers recently as narrow losses have kept them lower on

the league ladder than their performances would warrant. They still believe, however, that they will make the semi finals. On a more positive note,

27/07:

Ladies Par: Div 1 Winner Robyn Butler +2; Div 2: Winner Ruth Buchanan +1. Men’s Vets 9 hole Stableford: Overall Winner Robert Schiebel 23, Overall Runnerup Ian McFarlane 22. 28/07: Ladies Stableford: Div 1: Winner Kathy Edmunds 34; Div 2: Winner Margaret Ball 36. Men’s Stableford: A Grade: Winner Peter Mentis 35, Runner-Up David Rann 34; B Grade: George Marchesi (vis) 36 c/b, Runner-up Keith Bryars 36; C Grade: Winner John Stanton 36, Runner-up Ken Scamell 35.

Stuart King ran on for his 100th game at the Vince Woodman Oval Mallabula week. After playing in two premiership winning sides and being captain for two years, he remains a key player for the side. Club President Bryan Thompson invites all supporters to an ‘Old Boys and Sponsors’ game on 12 August. “This game is played against arch rival Shortland and is a great chance for the current players and locals to catch up with legends of yesteryear,” he said. Meanwhile, in its first season, the open women’s team is performing well and in line for a shot at the semifinals. All four of the competitive junior sides look like making the semis with the under 14s the best prospect for a grand final berth. There are six other noncompetitive sides.

29/07:

C1: Men’s Stableford: A Grade: Winner Peter Sutton 40, Runner-up Alan Mundey 38; B Grade: Winner Neil Goudge 41, Runner-up Greg Durie 38; C Grade: Winner Brian Diemar 39, Runnerup Graeme Murray 37. C2: Men’s Stableford: A Grade: Winner Max Pride 35 c/b, Runner-up David Rann 35; B Grade: Winner Ray Moore 39, Runner-up Neil Russell 38; C Grade: Winner Lee Barrett 38, Runner-up David Hansor 37.
